Area students in grades 9-12 were invited to submit a work of original, short fiction. In keeping with the community theme of “Saratoga150” this fiction envisioned Saratoga Springs 150 years in the future, in the year 2163.

The submitted stories were judged by local awardwinning authors and literary experts. The top three submissions will receive prizes, and be honored at an awards ceremony and reception, hosted by SaratogaArtsFest at Zankel Music Center, Skidmore College on June 5th from 5:30 p.m.–6:15 p.m. The first prize story will be published in Saratoga Living.

Pacilio, Moshgan Rozania, and Takeyce Walter. ++ Heidi Lanino Bilezikian was born in New York and is the recipient of a four-year full scholarship to Pratt Institute’s School of Art and Design. After receiving her BFA in Fine Arts, she studied drawing and painting nationally and internationally, including excursions to Italy, Germany, and France. Thematically, her artwork is focused on the horse, which to her represents movement, freedom and the transformation of spirit. Her work on ceramics incorporates women and nature with a free flowing, decorative approach to surface design. Canvas and works on paper. Abstract and lyrical. ++ Jack Metzger uses found objects, bits and pieces of items of daily life, to create sculptural assemblages and give new life and meaning to elements that had previously been discarded. These combinations of disparate items that would not typically be connected with each other provide both an interesting aesthetic as well as new messages to be considered. ++ L.P. Pacilio believes there is an ebb and flow to the way time passes through a location. By paying close attention, one can begin to find a pathway and move within them in an effort (close to thoughtless and more by intuition) to locate oneself within the scene to points where windows exist and are open wide. What you will see in these walls are bits of time so stumbled upon in Rome, Italy, in May of 2010. As to whether this constant creative act, pictures coming together and falling apart in slivers of a second, is the result of chaos or design, the artist doesn’t know. This he leaves to the theologians, philosophers, and cosmologists. He is a photographer. ++ Moshgan Rozania is an artist fascinated with the world of nature in all of its myriad manifestations. She considers nature to be her greatest teacher, with an interest to find beauty and truth in everyday objects that most people would overlook, whether the subject is landscape, figure, or still-life. Rozania’s still-life arrangements represent much more than a group of objects— the essence of the arrangement as a composite of color, shape, line, tone, and texture begins to take on a personality of its own, quite apart from the individual elements. ++ Takeyce Walter is a veteran artist of SaratogaArtsFest featured exhibitions. Her work this year focuses on the intimate. Her smaller pastel and oil on canvas landscapes showcase the beauty of our area. Walter’s use of color and attention to detail create an exciting energy that is multiplied when viewed at this smaller scale.
