Fabric Features

Fabrics have natural characteristics which should be carefully considered. To select the right fabric for you please refer to the fabric glossary (right). Consider:

For Upholstery, Upholstered Bed Frames, Headboards and Scatter Cushions Selected fabrics also available by the metre

• Delicate fabrics such as velvets and chenilles have a raised pile and exhibit shading variations, crushing, lines and bruising, which create unique features. To avoid flattening the pile, protective coatings cannot be applied and care with liquids should be taken.

WOVEN PLAIN

• Linen has a natural tendency to crease which enhances its textural appearance, creases will soften as the fabric relaxes in use. Pilling can occasionally occur in early stages of use, which is a feature of such fabrics.

Dalton

Woven on a dobby loom which produces a regularly spaced woven design or plain fabric. Woven dobby. 65% viscose, 18% cotton, 15% linen, 2% silk.

• Fabrics with a linen and/or cotton content can pill and have fine threads visible. Some may display slub characteristic effects and may include occasional seeds and husks.

Dalton Metallic

• Fabrics selected for upholstered products may adopt a slightly different texture and appearance from those purchased by the metre due to fire resistant processing. They are natural or normal characteristics which do not affect product quality. The occasional odour from this will dissipate once the product is in use for a period of time.

Durability

All upholstery fabric meets the requirement for general domestic furniture. Furniture is designed and developed for domestic use in the home, for non-domestic/commercial use it is your responsibility to check requirements. For product use responsibility see pg 333. Consider how much use your product will receive and select a fabric suitable for your needs. Take extra care with sharp objects, such as studs and belt buckles as these can snag even the toughest of fabrics.

Using Your Own Upholsterer

• Fabric suitability should be checked carefully for defects before cutting and upholstering as we are unable to take responsibility for third party costs once upholstered. • Most fabrics have a maximum length of 15m so for lengths greater than this check colour compatibility carefully. • For upholstering, all fabrics require a fire retardant barrier interliner, compliant with schedule 3 of the safety regulations; use a reputable upholsterer and seek advice.

The Upholstery Fabric Collection

Key to Symbols: Upholstery fabrics

All of our fabrics shown here are suitable for upholstery, scatter cushions, upholstered bedframes and headboards unless otherwise stated. These fabrics are not available to buy by the metre and are only available on Laura Ashley upholstered products. Not suitable for loose covers 6

To avoid undesirable technical characteristics such as flattening, these fabrics do not have a protective coating applied, and care with liquids should be taken. Fabrics suitable for curtains, blinds and upholstery see pg 296.

CARE AND CLEANING

All upholstery products should be professionally cleaned in situ unless otherwise stated. For additional information and cleaning instructions for loose covers please refer to the care guide supplied and the label sewn into your upholstered product. We recommend using a reputable upholstery care professional and requesting a colour fastness test is performed and is satisfactory on an inconspicuous area before cleaning commences.

PATTERN MATCHING

Upholstery fabrics are not matched at the seams unless marked by when they are partially matched across the pieces, eg. stripes may match vertically, however piping and hidden seams may not.
