Proposed extensi on for a two storey countrysi de house. The cli ent requested a new garden f aci ng f ami l y room,a bri ght and warm space where the f ami l y could have the feeli ng of bei ng surrounded by the nature.Connected to thi s new room, i t has been asked for a musi c room, wi th an i ndependent entrance and placed as f ar as possi ble from the mai n house to reduce the noi se. Modern i n shape and desi gn,thi sextensi on took some materi als from the exi sti ng bui ldi ng and the surroundi ng context mi xi ng wi th i nnovati ve ones. The choi ce of a garden roof helped to li mi t the vi sual i mpact of the extensi on and,at the same ti me,to connect the house wi th the nature around. Thefeeli ng ofan outsi de space has been ampli fi ed by the use of a floor to cei li ng glass wi ndow.

Theproposalwas forthedemoli ti on of the exi sti ng si ngle storey di ni ng room and partofexi sti ng bui ldi ng and thei r replacementwi th a new two storey si de extensi on and a new si nglestorey rear extensi on. Hori zontaland li nearforms, wi thaseri esofflatroofsi ncorporati ng green roof technology have been selected. The proposal used a morecontemporaryapproach to the aestheti c, ai mi ng at completi ng the exi sti ng part rather than tryi ng to compete wi th them.A new ti mber claddi ng helped to cloakthe very obvi ous and somewhat ugly bri ckwork present i n the exi sti ng two storey ex tensi on at the rear of the property and gave a vi sual li nk to the new extensi on. New rendered walls have been used to bri ng a more contemporary feel, creati ng a contrast wi th the extent of the ori gi nal house. The front of the property retai ned as exi sti ng thi s means that the ori gi nal house remai ns the domi nant feature, thusretai ni ngandenhanci ng thecharacter ofthearea.

The cli ent requested a ki tchen extensi on,a new pool house,a new garage and an i nternal reconfi gurati on. A number of structures associ ated wi th the hallare Grade IILi sted although thehalli tselfi snotali sted bui ldi ng. The aestheti c of the new extensi ons has been selected to be contemporary, assumi ng thati twas i nappropri ate i n thi s case to i mi tate the style oftheexi sti ngbui ldi ngs.Thi sallowed as well for the exi sti ng bui ldi ngs to retai n thei r promi nenceand character.Thenew ki tchen has been desi gned wi th the ai m of gi vi ng the possi bi li ty to enjoy the vi ew ofthe garden through a fullglazed wall, put i n place of the exi sti ng bri ck screen one. Forthepoolhouse, a new si de extensi on has been proposed. The key concept was to make the new secti on appear as to befloati ng,exploi ti ng the support for the bui ldi ng set back at low level to gi ve thi s effect.Doi ngso,i thasbeenpossi ble to reduce the apparent mass of the new bui ldi ng. The new garagebui ldi ng has been i nstead seated i n the back courtyard,i nordertoreducei tsvi si bi li ty from the mai n road and from thefrontgarden.

The property was part of a block offlatlocated i n the old ci ty centre. The landlord wanted to explore the possi bi li ty of spli tti ngtheflati nto two parts,i n orderto refurbi sh i t. The two desi gned uni ts were i ntended to have di fferent purposes: the fi rst one was i ntended to beused bythesole landlord, the second one to be rented as a medi cal practi ceor a smallapartment.I n oneoftheproposals the possi bi li ty to have two di fferent entrances i n the bui ldi ng common stai rs has been proposed. Thi s requi red the acknowledgement of the other flats owners beforeto proceed.
