From Launton School - reporting on recent events in the school

Today we have some Year 6 children sharing their recent experiences of three events at school: SATs, Little Gardens and a football match.

SATs

Our teacher Mrs Terry helped us to prepare for the SATs tests. She gave us some previous papers to practise on and a SATs workbook. We could complete the papers in the workbook and with Mrs Terry’s help we were able to mark our own work. Mrs Terry also gave us some advice before we took the tests; to relax, get enough sleep, and try our best. We took the tests in the school hall, we had to be spaced out, so two people sat at either end of a big table that we normally use for lunch. We took tests in SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar), reading, arithmetic and reasoning. Reasoning is when you read a maths problem in word form and pull out the information to create a mathematical sum. We think we tried our hardest and feel confident that we have done well. Some of us found SPaG the easiest, but some thought that arithmetic was the easiest. We should find out our results in late July.

Little Gardens

As part of our D T lesson, we had to get into groups of four and plan a little garden in a large plant pot. We had a list of plants to choose from and we had to think about which plants would work well being grown in the same pot, how much space each plant would need and where in the pot the plant should be, for example, strawberries can be grown around the edge of a pot so the plant can trail over the edge. We knew that we couldn’t grow strawberries and onions in the same pot, but garlic and carrots would work well. We planted the garlic in the middle, as it grows quite tall, and put the carrots around the edge, so they can grow in the soil. It took quite a long time to fill the plant pots with soil, but we enjoyed planting the gardens. Now we have to keep an eye on the pots and the weather, and make sure they have enough water and sunshine. If it’s going to rain a lot we move the pots under some shelter, so they don’t get overwatered. We’ve got some strawberries on the plants, but they’re green at the moment, when they are ripe they will turn red. We are looking forward to eating them.

Football

Our school football team recently played a Bicester School League quarter final match against Chesterton Primary School. It took place on the playing fields behind the school. At half time we were winning 8-0, and the match finished 11-4. Dylan was the captain and he assisted on two goals. Clarence scored two goals and assisted on one. Chloe is normally a defender but she played in goal this time. Some of our classmates came to support us, they were chanting ‘Come on you reds!’ which really helped motivate us. They also helped us to warm up before the match by doing some passing drills with us. At the end of the match, we shook hands with the opposition and each team picked their Player of the Match. Chesterton picked Elliott from our team. We are now in the semi-final of the Bicester School League, and will be playing Eynsham in June.
