Spartanburg is a city for people who like to get things done. When something doesn’t exist, we make it. When there’s an opportunity, we take it. When there’s fun, we have it. In our historic downtown, you can start the day with a cup of locally roasted coffee and end it next door with a pint of award-winning locally brewed beer. You can literally walk in the footsteps of legendary musicians on the Hub City Music Trail and then duck into one of several art galleries, museums, or the Showroom, a frequent host for musicians that are regulars on stages from Nashville to Austin. This is Spartanburg. Always Doing.

Wellford

Wellford is the oldest town of the Wellford-Duncan-Lyman trio. Fishing in Lake Cooley is a delight, as is relaxing in the nearby park and picnic area. Or pack up your family and head to the Hollywild Animal Park featuring an outback safari ride, feeding areas, and picnic areas for you and your own herd. Be sure to visit during the holidays for the awardwinning Holiday Lights Safari Benefit.

Woodruff

Most of the early settlers came to Woodruff from Virginia and North Carolina. They were primarily veterans of the Revolution and their families. Visitors interested in life during these times may explore the Thomas Price House. Built in 1795, The Price House is now a house museum with an authentic slave cabin. Historic Areas & Districts Spartanburg In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Spartanburg’s rolling landscape has been a meeting place and transportation hub for millennia. Prior to European colonization, Native Americans, primarily Cherokee, inhabited this land. After a 1755 treaty, settlers, especially conflict-hardened Scots-Irish, quickly moved to the cheap, fertile land. By the time of the Revolutionary War, the South Carolina backcountry was an early “Wild West” of opportunistic bandits and Cherokee raiding parties. The patriot cause gained support and local militia units, including the Spartan Regiment for which the county was named, rallied to the fight. Several notable battles occurred in the area, most famously the Battle of Cowpens. After independence was won, Spartanburg County was created and the courthouse village was laid out around a public square in the approximate center of the county. Public sales and farmers markets soon led to permanent taverns and merchants’ shops. Early civic achievements included the creation of schools and the 1859 connection to the railroad which later revolutionized the local economy. As the area survived the Civil War and Reconstruction, leaders capitalized on the area’s tiny but profitable textile industry and by the 1880s, Spartanburg was becoming a national economic engine by attracting workers and money. National events also shaped Spartanburg’s development. In 1917, the U.S. Army established Camp Wadsworth, a training camp for over 100,000 men. For World War II, Camp Croft trained over 200,000 soldiers. Together, these camps secured Spartanburg’s place in national affairs throughout the country. Culturally, Spartanburg was also advancing. With the growth of Wofford and Converse Colleges and the influx of textile money and easy transportation, Spartanburg gained a cosmopolitan air. As decades passed, cultural options flourished in the city, and the arts, especially music, achieved a new place in Spartanburg’s development. Today, the many art and music venues in the city continue that heritage. By the 1980s, the collapse of the textile industry, declining agriculture, and lingering racial tensions left Spartanburg with a struggling economy and an ailing downtown. Over the following decades, a series of efforts began to renew downtown and today a new generation brings life back into the old city. A focus on local businesses, the arts, active living, historic preservation, and a beautiful landscape make downtown a successful urban center once again.

What is your favorite hidden gem in Spartanburg?

Hatcher Garden, the only botanical garden in the city. It’s open every day and it’s free. – JOE MULLINAX, Principal at MoreView Media

Converse Heights converseheights.org The Converse Heights neighborhood, located near downtown, was one of Spartanburg’s first suburbs with most of the houses being built between 1905 and 1950. A mix of modest bungalows and grand mansions, the area includes Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, and Craftsman architecture. Most lots are laid out in a dense grid with narrow but deep yards shaded by 100-year old oak and pecan trees. Broad boulevards and avenues with sidewalks throughout and a central pocket park, Happy Hollow, make Converse Heights an active living paradise. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, Converse Heights real estate has held its value because of the charm of the place and the pride of homeowners in maintaining the intergrity of this fine old family neighborhood. Glendale glendalesc.com Glendale is a historic textile town on the waters of Lawson’s Fork Creek, five miles southeast of downtown Spartanburg. The site of an early iron works, Revolutionary War skirmish, and early textile community, the historical layers here are deep. Recent village revitalization has an outdoor and environmental focus. Additions include the Palmetto Conservation Foundation’s Glendale Outdoor Leadership School (GOLS) and Wofford College’s restoration of the Victorian mill office into the Goodall Environmental Studies Center. The Spartanburg Area Conservancy (SPACE) has made the beautiful acreage along the creek open to the public. The shoals at Glendale also begin a popular paddling trail for eight miles of whitewater to the Town of Pacolet Pacolet & Pacolet Historic Mill District townofpacolet.com With a history that ranges from the prehistoric soapstone quarries that line the river through the vibrant textiles that came from the village mill, the Pacolet community rightfully prides itself on a distinctive heritage. The founders of Pacolet envisioned it as a model community of “cultural, Display at the Pacolet spiritual, recreational, educational and Area Museum employment opportunities.” Within the historic district there are over 250 arts and craft style homes, the largest concentration of this architecture in SC. Recent revitalization efforts continue to enhance this community, despite the loss of the textile industry here. Glenn Springs Historic District Known through the 1800s as a popular summer destination for Low Country South Carolinians, Glenn Springs was once a thriving resort community. Unfortunately, the large hotel that anchored this community was destroyed by fire, but many points of interest survive, including the Glenn Springs Academy, Episcopal and Presbyterian Churches, and the historic homes built by John C. Zimmerman, Charles W. Zimmerman, Dr. Maurice Moore (Cedar Grove), and Dr. John Winsmith (Camp Hill).

Hampton Heights Neighborhood hamptonheights.org The Hampton Heights Historic District is a significant collection of 340 residences in the central city that retains its historic and architectural integrity from the early twentieth century. Developed between 1890 and 1930, it was the home of many noteworthy Spartanburg citizens including two South Carolina governors. Architectural styles represented in the neighborhood include Queen Anne, Bungalow, Craftsman, Four-Square, and Neo-Classical. Listed on national and local historic registers, the neighborhood has been revitalized by proactive homeowners and a strong neighborhood association. Its close proximity to downtown allows residents to walk or bike to many destinations. Historic Downtown Greer cityofgreer.org The Greer Downtown Historic District is significant for its high concentration of intact early twentieth-century commercial architecture. Established along the Air Line Railroad in the 1870s, Greer has transitioned from a small agricultural marketplace Doctor’s buggy from the 1890s to a manufacturing center positioned in a key area of growth between Greenville and Spartanburg. A new wave of civic pride has also benefited downtown Greer and the city hosts many events and recreational opportunities. Morgan Square, Spartanburg Historic District Spartanburg’s original public square dates from 1787, when this location was designated as the seat of the Spartan District, later Spartanburg County. After the establishment of the first courthouse and jail, businesses and taverns were built in lots bordering the square. Before long, Morgan Square was the thriving commercial and cultural hub of the community. Today’s downtown retains many of the historic features present over a century ago, including the original town clock and the 1881 Daniel Morgan monument from which the square derives its name. Many of the storefronts on the south side of the square date to the 1880’s and the lush public park hosts gatherings throughout the year.

Historic Sites Cowpens Depot 120 Palmetto St, Cowpens | 864-463-3201 mycowpensgov.com/depot The Cowpens railroad depot was built in the 1870s for the Southern Railway. Local citizens saved the depot from destruction and moved it to its current location to serve as a community center and museum. An excellent example of a medium-sized depot from the golden age of American railroads, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Displayed items include clothing, photos, medals, and personal letters of former USS Cowpens crewmen.

Several historic re-enactments occur throughout the year in Spartanburg. Cowpens National Battlefield 4001 Chesnee Hwy, Gaffney | 864-431-2828 nps.gov/cowp At Hannah’s Cowpens, on January 17, 1781, a force of Continentals and militia from Virginia, Georgia and the Carolinas commanded by Gen. Daniel Morgan won a decisive Revolutionary War victory over British Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton. It was after this battle that British Gen. Cornwallis abandoned South Carolina to the Patriots and marched north to his eventual surrender at Yorktown, VA. This battle is considered a tactical masterpiece, frequently studied in military academies around the world. Troop movements around the battlefield are easy to understand and well interpreted by park rangers and signage. There are several special events every year, including an anniversary observance featuring re-enactors in January. (The battlefield is located just across the county line in Cherokee County.) Duncan Park Memorial Duncan Park, Union St, Spartanburg | 864-253-0376 This memorial lists the names of more than 600 young men from Spartanburg County who died in service to their country. In addition to the granite tablets of names, the memorial includes an American flag, a Prisoner of War flag, and service flags from the five military services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard). Benches are available for resting and contemplation. An annual memorial service is held on site on Memorial Day Sunday. Musgrove Mill State Historic Site 398 State Park Rd, Clinton | 864-938-0100 southcarolinaparks.com The park’s visitor center is filled with interpretive exhibits which focus on the Battle of Musgrove Mill and detail South Carolina’s pivotal role in the Revolutionary War. The park’s nature trail highlights the Enoree River, Cedar Shoals Creek, and Horseshoe Falls, where legend has it Mary Musgrove, the mill owner’s daughter, hid a Patriot soldier from the British. The park also offers picnicking and a popular fishing pond.

Nazareth Presbyterian Church 680 Nazereth Church Rd, Moore | 864-576-8034 nazarethpresbyterian.org Nazareth Church was established by the “Tyger River Colony” of ScotsIrish immigrants, the first Europeans to settle west of the Broad River after the Cherokee War in 1760. Many of the graves in the cemetery (on the National Register of Historic Places) date from that time. Portions of the present building date from 1832 and visitors will see a nice collection of congregational memorabilia. Pacolet River Flood Sculpture 3061 US 29, Spartanburg Nearly one hundred people died in floodwaters that swept through the Pacolet River valley on the morning of June 6, 1903. The flood wiped out dozens of homes, destroyed four textile mills and heavily damaged two others. Almost all of those who died were mill workers. This small park of remembrance was dedicated to flood victims in November 2011. Price House Bedroom at the Price House 1200 Oak View Farms Rd, Woodruff | 864-576-6546 spartanburghistory.org Thomas & Ann Price built their house around 1795. Price ran a general store, post office, tavern and inn. Enslaved African-Americans performed much of the work for his businesses and labored in the fields of his 2,000-acre farm. Visitors may tour the brick home, a slave cabin, and hike a nature trail to discover how free and enslaved residents changed the Upcountry from a frontier to an antebellum society through improved roads and communications, more nonfarm businesses, and an explosion in cotton farming and slave labor. These residents caused social, economic, and environmental changes that still impact the region today.

49

Seay House 106 Darby Rd, Spartanburg | 864-596-3501 spartanburghistory.org Built as early as the 1790s, the Seay House is believed to be the oldest homestead standing in the City of Spartanburg. Interpretation by the Spartanburg County Historical Association focuses on the lives of women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as three unmarried daughters of Kinsman Seay - Ruthy, Patsy, and Sarah - lived a simple farm life in this house. The oldest portion of this dwelling is a typical Scots-Irish, 1-1/2 story log house. The logs are hand hewn and the pipestem fieldstone chimney is a style commonly found in Virginia but unusual for Upstate South Carolina. Spartanburg Cemeteries: Magnolia Cemetery was established on land donated to the city by Jesse Cleveland in the 1830s. Notables buried in the cemetery include William “Singing Billy” Walker, whose Southern Harmony and Christian Harmony shape-note hymnals sold half a million copies during his lifetime. Among the popular hymns in these books is the traditional Magnolia Cemetery Southern arrangement of “Amazing Grace.” Other graves include those of several high-ranking Confederate soldiers and political leaders, as well as James H. Carlisle, the distinguished president of Wofford College from 1875-1902. The Old City Cemetery, near South Church Street, began with a number of African-American graves displaced by a downtown railroad expansion in 1910. It is maintained as a memorial to the leaders of the AfricanAmerican community in the early years of freedom. Oakwood Cemetery, located on beautiful rolling hills just east of Converse College, began in the late 1800s as a replacement for Magnolia Cemetery. Magnificent landscaping and impressive monuments make this cemetery well worth a leisurely stroll. Spartanburg County Heritage Geotrail spartanburgparks.org/geocaching.htm The Heritage Geotrail is a series of geocaches that takes participants on a historic tour of Spartanburg County. Participants visit locations significant to the heritage of the county. Walnut Grove Plantation 1200 Otts Shoals Rd, Roebuck | 864-576-6546 spartanburghistory.org Charles & Mary Moore established Walnut Grove Plantation when they settled in South Carolina around 1765. The Scots-Irish immigrants raised ten children in the house they built and lived in for 40 years. Mr. Moore relied on a dozen enslaved African Americans and his own large family to work his sizable farm. During the American Revolution, the Moore family, including eldest daughter Kate Moore Barry, actively supported the Patriot cause and the militia mustered at Walnut Grove. Loyalist William “Bloody Bill” Cunningham killed 3 Patriot soldiers sheltered at the plantation. A historic site operated by the Spartanburg County Historical Association and offering tours of the centuries-old home, Walnut Grove Plantation tells the stories of the free and enslaved people who settled South Carolina and the rest of Britain’s American colonies, who fought for independence, and who, in the end, built a new nation.

City of

SPARTANBURG south carolina

Spartanburg Isn’t Fun ...said no one. Sure, there is probably somebody out there who wouldn’t enjoy live music at city venues nearly every night, offerings from a visual and performance arts community nourished by the $40 million Chapman Cultural Center, two liberal arts colleges, a number of thriving arts organizations, fabulous neighborhood parks and trails, outdoor festivals and events year-round, two of the Southeast’s best cycling events each spring or a chance to get face to face with pro football stars every summer. Yes, there probably is somebody out there who wouldn’t enjoy any of those things – but what fun is that?

Sweet Tea We swear by it and drink it by the gallon. It’s even our state’s official hospitality beverage! You can’t go wrong with this sweet drink to cool you off on a hot southern day. Early settlers in Spartanburg had to camp in tents, but Spartanburg now boasts over 3,500 rooms throughout the county. We have delightfully cozy bed and breakfasts, as well as the major chains you know and trust. And if you still want to camp, we have some great campgrounds, too!

Steeped in southern hospitality, enjoy a stay at the Walnut Lane Inn.
