Hi, I’m Jackie – the new Executive Director of the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce. As a resident of our region for over 30 years, I’m incredibly excited to have this opportunity to share my passion with all of you. By the way … did you know that we now have scheduled daily air service directly into the Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport through American Airlines? Just remember destination IFP – International Fun Place! The Colorado River region is a very special place, and those who live here are blessed with almost perfect year-round weather and more recreational opportunities than we have time for. Our resorts are fantastic escapes from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, whether you’re looking for a fabulous meal, a day at the spa, or a fun-filled time on the gaming floor. The resort pools are also a perfect get-away, and some of them offer pool-side food and beverages as well as cabana rentals for your pleasure. Other entertainment options include concerts and other live performances, stand-up comedy, cocktail lounges, dance clubs, dinner cruises, shopping, movie theatres, arcades, bingo parlors, a classic car museum, wine, coffee and food cafes, a bowling alley, food and music festivals, and so much more. As an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast, I have come to love exploring the back roads in our area, as well as experiencing the ride through diverse routes leading to so many nearby destinations in the southwest. The break from reality as I ride through the beautiful desert landscapes never ceases to leave me with a sense of overwhelming peace and tranquility mixed with exhilarating joy. I’m always amazed when people say there’s nothing to do here; for me, there aren’t enough hours in the day or week! S E N S AT I O N A L S C E N I C DAY T R I P S When you’re ready to explore, we have many must-see locations that are perfect for day trips. Most people are surprised at the stunning beauty they find when exploring the outer areas of our region.
Lake Mead/Lake Mohave National Recreation Area Two powerful forces molded this hospitable landscape - nature and technology - one over millions of years, the other in the last few decades. Lake Mead National Recreation Area provides spectacular scenic vistas of the lakes and rugged
and isolated backcountry. Striking and dramatic physical features include deep canyons, dry washes, sheer cliffs, distant mountain ranges, the lakes, colorful soils and rock formations and mosaics of different vegetation. A network of backcountry roads has been developed to provide access to the lakeshore and other areas of interest in the backcountry. Approved roads are signed with yellow arrows.

GRAPEVINE CANYON For centuries, Native American tribal shamans have visited Grapevine Canyon to receive and renew their powers. The site represents the largest concentration of petroglyphs in southern Nevada and contains rock art many believe to be more than 1,000 years old. A result of hundreds of years of ceremonies, many of the markings are covered over. Geometric shapes, human figures and animals can be deciphered in the many markings. After a short 1/2 mile hike from the trail head, thousands of petroglyphs come into view, beginning at eye level and extending up the canyon wall, but there’s more to this desert canyon than culture. Wild grapevines cover large sections of the canyon wall and during rainy seasons, three separate, spectacular waterfalls cascade from the walls. If you visit Grapevine canyon please remember this is a holy site for the Aha Macav people. Leave no trace.

HUALAPAI MOUNTAINS The Hualapai Mountains, located near Kingman, are where area locals go to escape the heat. Encompassing more than 2,300 acres with elevations ranging from 4,984 to 8,417 feet, visitors can easily experience the cool and clear beauty of pine country. Hualapai Mountain Park was first developed during the early 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and is now maintained by the Mohave County Parks Department. The roads, trails, picnic and camping areas, along with the stone cabins and pavilions, are still much as they were 50 years ago, helping to give the park its own unique character. The name “Hualapai” means “pine tree folk,” and is derived from the name of the Indian tribe that once called these mountains home until they were relocated by the military in the 1870s. There are plenty of hiking trails, picnic areas, camp sites, horseback riding trails, ATV trails, group recreation areas, scenic look-out areas, wildlife viewing and more. BLACK CANYON Not only can you find rivers and lakes near Laughlin, desert springs abound. The springs found in Black Canyon, with water temperatures ranging from about 55 to 136 degrees, come in many forms — large seeps with wet rock faces up to 100 feet long, spring fed brooks that discharge into the Colorado River and those that discharge water from the Black Canyon walls directly. A few of these features, such as Nevada Hot Springs and Arizona Hot Springs, can be reached by hiking. Others such as the springs in Boy Scout Canyon, can only be reached by boat. Nevada Hot Springs, accessed via a trail head located off Highway 93 on the Nevada side of Hoover Dam, is located within Goldstrike Canyon. This spring (actually series of springs, located on Bureau of Reclamation land) produces a number of picturesque pools of varying temperatures, as well as lovely waterfalls. Arizona Hot Springs, located about 4 miles south of Hoover Dam, can be accessed via a scenic hiking trail located off Highway 93 on the Arizona side of the Colorado River. It produces fairly constant 111 degree water that drops through several small pools.
LAKE HAVASU NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Protecting more than 30 river miles and 300 miles of shoreline, the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1941, is home to thousands of birds and animals who rely on the life-giving waters. A great river in a dry, hot land that attracts wildlife and people like a powerful magnet. Today, many thousands of visitors annually flock to the refuge to boat through the spectacular Topock Gorge, watch waterbirds, or hike the Havasu Wilderness Area. A favorite for many visitors is the 4,000-acre Topock Marsh, created from a historical river meander in 1966 when the South Dike outlet structure was constructed. Presently, the marsh represents over 40 percent of the remaining backwaters of the Colorado River and serves as a critical resting place for migratory waterfowl and a home to resident songbirds, waterbirds, and other wildlife. This area is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Kayakers and canoers enjoy the solitude of the marsh and the limited availability to motorized boats.

FRESH WATER RECREATION Laughlin may be situated in the middle of the Mojave Desert, but it is surrounded by water recreation opportunities. With the Colorado River flowing by and Lake Mohave only minutes away, the hard part is deciding between fishing, boating, jet skiing, scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing or tubing.

Boating, jet skiing, skiing...
Those who already own their toys need only registered vehicles and a place to dock. Those looking to rent a little fun for the weekend or a couple of hours have plenty of options. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which includes Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, offers concessions supplying houseboats, ski boats, jet skis and float trips. Boating of all kinds is allowed in Lake Mohave, so long as safety laws and regulations are followed.
Canoeing and kayaking...
River guides are available to launch and pick up canoes and kayaks along the Colorado River and Lake Mohave. Popular trips include Davis Dam to Rotary Park in Bullhead City, Topock Gorge, Black Canyon from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach and still water tours of Lake Mohave. With cool water temperatures year round, kayaking and canoeing can be had 12 months a year.

FISHERMAN'S ACCESS PARK
Fisherman's Access Park in Laughlin, in between the Laughlin Bridge and the Riverside Resort has been redesigned with several cosmetic improvements and upgrades to better serve more people at a cost of $5 million. The remodeling project for Fisherman's Access Park was a joint public-private venture between Laughlin founder Don Laughlin and the Nevada Department of Wildlife. In addition to new asphalt, improvements include reducing water use for grass; making the park more ADA compliant; reconstructing the launch ramp, providing a dedicated law enforcement and new public-use dock; picnic ramadas, a redesign of the Flag Plaza in conjunction with the Laughlin American Legion; providing additional parking spaces for vehicles with boat trailers, and providing an area for people to fish from the bank.
Scuba diving...
Explore the emerald world of Lake Mohave or the moving waters of the Colorado River with an airtank and scuba equipment. Whether an experienced diver or a novice hoping to get their fins, Lake Mohave offers several diving scenarios. Buses, boats and other underwater adventures await. Scour the bed of the Colorado and see evidence of a bygone steamboat era. Or stumble upon modern pirate booty — lost keys, jewelry and sunglasses.
DAVIS CAMP
Cottonwood Cove Resort and Marina on Lake Mohave is one of Nevada’s best kept secrets conveniently located on the Colorado River, just a short drive from Laughlin, NV and Bullhead City. This pristine desert lake is part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, administered by the National Park Service and is approximately 67 miles long backed up by Davis Dam on the Colorado River. Cottonwood Cove Resort offers friendly lakeside accomodations, a full-service RV park and nearby campground facilities.
No matter whether you're looking to put a boat in the water, a campsite with amenities so you're not quite "roughing it," a place for the kids to burn off some energy splashing around or you'd simply like to find a quiet spot under a tree to enjoy a juicy novel, Davis Camp is that place. Nestled in between the Laughlin Bridge and Davis Dam on the Arizona side of the Colorado River, Davis Camp is the place to relax for a few days or enjoy an action-packed weekend on the river. Maintained by the Mohave County Parks Department, they offer vacation homes for rent, spaces with full hookups for trailers or RVs and they have plenty of campsites along the palm-tree lined beach for campers and tent spots. There is a sanitary disposal (dump station) for park guests, along with shower buildings and laundry facilities. Day use is permitted in the picnic areas, along with swim beaches, fishing along the shores and a boat launch.

Fishing...
Largemouth bass, striped bass, channel catfish, crappie, and bluegill are found in both Lakes Mead and Mohave, as well as the Colorado River. Rainbow trout can be found in Lake Mohave and record breaking specimens are often caught at Willow Beach. Cottonwood Cove, Davis Camp and Katherine Landing offer great bass and trout fishing.

H E R I TAG E TRAILS C O L O R A D O R I V E R H E R I TAG E G R E E N WAY PA R K A N D T R A I L S The newest enhancement for the pleasure of outdoor enthusiasts is the Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trails system, aka the Heritage Trails. Enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including walking along the riverfront trail adjacent to the Colorado River, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, fishing, picnicking, bird watching, kayaking, a kids’ play area including a splash pad, restrooms, and more! This combination of 13-miles of paved and dirt looped trails offers a combination of adventures for everyone. Visit the Heritage Trail and learn about Davis Dam from the interpretive panels through-out

the recreation area and the original “Contractor’s Camp” where the workers and their families lived.

Pyramid Canyon Loop Trail The half-mile trail in the Pyramid Canyon day-use area leads to picnic areas, a splash pad, three fishing piers, and 1.5 miles of shoreline access. Located just below Davis Dam, it’s a great spot for family outings. Riverwalk Exploration Trail This two-mile trail provides access to picnicking and shade shelters, fishing, and the Colorado River. This trail is great for bird watching, biking, and a leisurely walk.
Horseshoe Trail An equestrian 2.75 mile trail that allows cyclists and hikers a more challenging adventure. This trail features scenic vistas of the Colorado River, Davis Dam, Lake Mohave, Laughlin, and the surrounding areas. The Desert Trail This compacted dirt trail offers approximately 6 miles of the natural desert experience with the High Desert and Laughlin High School trail off-shoots. Starting at the Desert Trailhead and continuing through the desert under SR 163 to the Equestrian Trailhead, you can enjoy the view of Lake Mohave at the top of the hill. The Contractor Camp Trail Wandering through this half-mile loop of the actual road layout, you can read the interpretive panels about the camp workers and their families who lived there and built the dam, and see the existing foundations of their homes, stores, etc. Davis Dam Trail Take a one-mile walk or bicycle ride from the Pyramid Canyon day-use area up and over Davis Dam and enjoy the beautiful view! Pyramid Canyon Day Use Area and Picnic Sites Group and individual shade shelters can be reserved through the Clark County Parks and Recreation Department (702)298-3413. Special Events Permits are required for special events along the Riverwalk Exploration Trail corridor and the Pyramid Canyon day use area.
HOW IT BEGAN
Development of the project concept started in 2000. Nevada’s Clark County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution supporting increased recreation opportunities at Davis Dam in Laughlin, Nevada in August 2001. Clark County and Bureau of Reclamation signed a Reclamation Recreation Purpose Lease on December 16, 2009, for 1,191 acres of land for a regional park, special events area, golf complex, and other facilities. Clark County and the National Park Service signed a similar land use agreement on May 18, 2010.

AMERICA’S GREAT OUTDOORS (AGO) INITIATIVE
The Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trails was designated an AGO project in November 2001, and an AGO River Initiative Project in February 2012. The AGO recognition was awarded again in 2013. The AGO mission is to foster a 21st century approach to conservation that is designed by and accomplished with partners for the benefit of the American people. One of AGO’s objectives is to engage, educate, and employ young people. Another is to reconnect Americans with their outdoor heritage and recreation opportunities on public lands.

REGIONAL WILDLIFE & V E G E TAT I O N A diverse group of cactus, trees, flowers and animals call the Mojave Desert home. Copious amounts of water in the desert environment lend to a diverse population of furry, prickly, hardy and abundant wildlife. Birdwatchers from across the globe flock to the Tri-state to observe the numerous species who call the vibrant river valley home, including bald eagles, thrashers, black tailed gnatcatchers, roadrunners, ospreys and falcons. Many only winter in the desert but several remain year round. Birds aren’t the only winged creatures calling the Tri-state home. Laughlin hosts 17 of the region’s 28 bat species, including the myotis brown bat, spotted bat and Townsend’s Big-eared bat. While in Laughlin also look for desert tortoise, beaver, big horn sheep, mountain lion, jack rabbit, badger, raccoon, fox, skunk, wild horse, wild burro, bobcat, gila monster, chuckwalla, sidewinder, Mojave rattlesnake, western diamondback, scorpion, tarantula and horned lizard. NEARBY ATTRACTIONS ROUTE 66 With the longest continuous stretch of Route 66 just minutes from Laughlin, it would be a shame to pass up this preserved piece of American history. OATMAN One of Arizona’s most charismatic Old West towns, Oatman was once a thriving mining metropolis. Men grew rich from the fertile mines of the Black Mountains and the town flourished under their largess. The Oatman Hotel is still standing and is said to house the ghosts of the two lovebirds. Big bend state park Big Bend of the Colorado River includes about two miles of sandy shoreline. Because the park is downstream from Davis Dam, the river is clear and cool year-round. Popular activities are camping, pic-nicking, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and bird watching. Walking Box Ranch Seven miles west of Searchlight, Nevada, is the Walking Box Ranch. The ranch was purchased in 1931 as a 400,000 acre working ranch by 1920’s movie stars Rex Bell and Clara Bow. Walking Box was named as such because it appeared to look like a box camera on tripod used in the old days of Hollywood. The “Nellie E. Saloon” (Desert Bar) is located in the Buckskin Mountains of Parker, Arizona on land that was previously an old mining camp. The inside of the saloon is unique in many ways, it has windows made from old glass refrigerator doors, a brass bar top, and ceiling made of stamped tin from a factory in Missouri. The property has grown over the years with the addition of a covered walk bridge and even a church. The Desert Bar is located 5 miles off the Cienega Springs Rd. exit on Highway 95 approximately 5 miles north of Parker, Arizona and is open October through April, Saturdays and Sunday only from noon to 6 p.m.

HISTORY
Along the banks of the Colorado River and nestled between surrounding majestic mountains, emerges the picturesque expanse named for gaming pioneer Don Laughlin. Nearly 5 million annual visitors retreat to this desert oasis renowned for an expansive list of activities –including fishing, boating, water skiing, golf, camping and hiking. An average high temperature of 87 degrees Fahrenheit makes a perfect climate for enjoying all the outdoor activities available in Laughlin. In 1966, the Riverside Resort opened and offered all-you-can-eat chicken dinners for 98 cents, 12 slot machines, two gaming tables, and accommodations that included a stay in one of the four rooms – the Laughlin family occupied the other four rooms. Tri State eventually became the town of Laughlin, named for its visionary Don Laughlin. The casino owner’s surname was bestowed on the town when a U.S. Postal Service inspector insisted he give it a name in order to obtain mail. “I followed his advice,” Don Laughlin says with a laugh. “He suggested ‘Laughlin’ because it was a good Irish name. His name was O’Neill.” A once barren desert terrain has become a modern boomtown ignited by the imagination of one man from a small farm near Owatonna, Minnesota. Despite his success, Don still maintains a personal connection to his customers and can often be seen talking to guests around the property. Recipient of the first Laughlin Chamber of Commerce Community Lifetime Achievement Award for his visionary talents and the 1991 Gaming Hall of Fame inductee has made it clear in many ways that Laughlin, Nevada, is his home.
