MESSAGE FROM LAUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S PRESIDENT

We, at LAU, are so proud of what we have achieved during the past fiscal year, and we owe our success to the generosity of our alumni and friends who, through their philanthropic initiatives, enable us to fulfill our mission and maintain our promise of academic excellence. Through 1,533 donations, LAU received gifts totaling over $18.9 million during Fiscal Year 2018. Such generosity during those tough economic times is nothing but the reflection of the solid trust our friends, alumni, faculty, staff, and trustees have in us. We are proud to be partnering with you on this journey, and we are committed to always delivering results worthy of your trust. Those gifts go towards the continuous development of effective teaching and learning methods at LAU, and are translated into robust academic programs, high-tech facilities across our two campuses, growing research efforts, and necessary financial aid programs, making education at LAU accessible for all, all while maintaining a high-standard world-class quality. In fact, financial aid remains at the top of our fundraising priorities. It is thanks to you, our loyal supporters, that we were able to provide 4,276 deserving students just over $31.7 million in scholarships and financial aid in Fiscal Year 2018, an outstanding 6% increase in funding from 2017, much of which came from generous donors who contribute to annual scholarships. Investing in our young men and women is a guarantee for a better future for the country and for the region. At LAU, our graduates learn the values of leadership, ambition, service, and excellence, and continue to make an impact in their fields years and years after their graduation. When you invest in education, you are investing in a better future not only for our students, but also for the community as a whole. Philanthropy has no limits, and we are grateful for each and every one of your contributions. Any contribution in any form is a push towards fulfilling our vision and mission. STUDENT PROFILE TALA LAKISS

Major: Education Graduation: Spring 2020

Unlike many students who are unsure of their plans after graduation, Tala Lakiss, a second year Education student at LAU, knows exactly where she wants to be in the next few years. “In five years, I will be writing my master’s thesis, and in parallel, preparing my classroom decorations for Halloween to make sure it is a safe place for children,” says Lakiss with unwavering determination. “In 10 years, I will be standing on an Ivy League’s auditorium, my heart bursting with joy, because I made it: I will finally be a PhD graduate! It will be the best day of my life,” she confidently adds.

“ My ultimate goal is to give back to LAU as a professor. ”

More noteworthy is Lakiss’ long-term goal: to teach at LAU. “My ultimate goal is to give back to LAU as a professor. After getting my PhD in Education, researching and exploring my field, I will be ready to use my knowledge to help my community and contribute to the development of my country and of LAU in the field of education,” she explains. Lakiss has chosen to pursue a career in education because of her passion to empower people through mentorship and education, which she says will help students reach their true full potential. While she has been at LAU only a short time, she is certain that it is taking her closer to her career goals. Speaking about the life skills LAU has instilled in her, Lakiss says, “It has been only a year, and I have already learned so much — understanding people and controlling my emotions, financing myself, managing my time, setting goals and achieving them and many more.” Her coursework and extracurricular activities have also helped with her self-development, including public speaking skills, and preparing her for her journey ahead in academia. Lakiss says she is fortunate to have learned so many life lessons early on in life that will stay with her indefinitely. She attributes them to the well-rounded experience she enjoys at LAU, which includes rich student activities on- and off-campus, including Model United Nation and Model Arab League, as well as community volunteer programs. “LAU and all my community involvement have taught me many values that are now a part of me, and essential to my identity. To name a few, I have learned the importance of integrity, patience, teamwork, and to be responsible for my actions and my words, among so many others,” says Lakiss. Her path towards becoming an educator would not be possible without her fully funded educational experience at LAU. Lakiss is an award recipient of the USAID-funded University Scholarship Program (USP), which aims to give public school students an opportunity to access a university education. She has worked hard for the award — starting in middle school, when she set her sights on securing the scholarship.

VOLUNTEER GROUPS

Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Circle The President Circleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (PC) was formed in 2012 with an aim of promoting LAU in ways outside the formal academic channels. Initiatives carried out by the PC include cultural and social events of public interest. During Fiscal Year 2018, which spans from September 1, 2017 to August 31, 2018, PC members and volunteers engaged with the community through various events including hosting a holiday party for underprivileged youth, awarding a financial prize to a deserving LAU nursing student, organizing a community lecture on organ donations, and coordinating a fundraising lunch, among many others.

PHONATHON 2018

Since 2014, the university has conducted a student-led Phonathon that involves calling between 800 to 1,000 alumni worldwide per year to secure pledges. The initiative runs for five weeks in the spring and gives alumni a way to give back and play an important role in the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future. STUDENT PROFILE ANTONIO BAKHOS

Major: Baking and Finance, minoring in Economics Graduation: Spring 2020

“ Diversity, leadership, teamwork, equality, competition, professionalism, time efficiency… all those are values I have learned here at LAU, and will proudly integrate them in my future career. ”

Antonio Bakhos is a second-year student majoring in Baking and Finance, all while pursuing a minor in Economics at LAU. Passionate about economics and finance, Bakhos plans to pursue his graduate studies in the field, to later invest his knowledge in helping startups build solid financial foundations and help them undertake profitable investments that will maximize their profits. “In five years I see myself having finished my master’s degree and working in a financial institution,” said Bakhos. “One of my long-term goals, maybe 15 to 20 years from now, is to open my own consulting and training company, to offer the students and young adults of my community an opportunity to grow their knowledge through a series of soft skills and interpersonal workshops and trainings.” Bakhos is excelling in his academic journey, utilizing all the resources and tools provided by LAU to equip him for a successful journey ahead. He so far has been placed twice on the Dean’s list for high distinction students. During his journey at LAU, he joined the Astronomy, Animals Rights, Music and Book Clubs. He is also a volunteer in the Donner Sang Compter organization. He is keen on attending and participating in numerous workshops pertaining to his major on campus, and he is hoping to undertake more opportunities in his remaining three semesters at LAU. “Acceptance is one of LAU’s most amazing values, you can be in a class of 20 and none of them have the same background but they all respect each other,” said Bakhos. “Diversity, leadership, teamwork, equality, competition, professionalism, time efficiency… all these are values I learned here at LAU and will proudly integrate them in my future career.” Antonio’s education would have not been possible without the generosity of our donors. He is the receiver of the USP scholarship, and is grateful for the support he has received and continues to get at LAU. “Being part of LAU USP is a blessing, it really smoothed my life at LAU, both from the financial support and guidance that I got. My scholarship covers 100 percent of my tuition, my accommodation, a laptop, a monthly stipend as well as some book allowance. I am forever grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

LAU ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA DINNER 2017

In 2012, LAU began holding its annual Fundraising Gala Dinner in Beirut. Each year the event draws together the university’s most important supporters, friends, and alumni to celebrate LAU’s accomplishments, made possible by its generous donors. The inaugural gala raised an impressive $7.5 million, and the successive events have had excellent results in support of the Gala Dinner Endowed Scholarship Fund. Entitled “Leading with Innovation,” the 2017 gala focused on LAU’s unique capabilities and strategic plans to help ensure students are equipped to become the region’s next inventors, entrepreneurs, and innovators. The 2017 gala was also special thanks to a $1.5 million gift from Talal Shair, chairman and CEO of Dar Al-Handasah, to support the School of Engineering’s new six-floor Engineering Laboratories and Research Center, where a floor was named “The Talal and Maha Shair Engineering Floor.” 32

IMPACTFUL COLLABORATIONS LAU’s legacy is deep-rooted in knowledge and progressive thinking, and remembering our alumna, Lamia Sabbah Ali-Ahmed, was nothing but a testimony to that. Late alumna Ali-Ahmed produced a thesis in 1959 for a degree in psychology from Beirut College for Women (BCW), now LAU, in which she tackled seven issues that are surprisingly now the same concerns of today’s youth. These seven issues are about health, vocation or future career, family relations, social life, emotional turmoil, school issues, and religious beliefs, revealing groundbreaking results about the youth of that age in urban and rural settings. The passing of Ali-Ahmed in 2018 spurred her children to create a scholarship in her honor. The Lamia Sabbah Ali-Ahmed Designated Scholarship was established in the summer of 2018 and is giving one student – Zeina Makki – the opportunity to follow the legacy of the late alumna. Her thesis is now republished in a book under the title of “Coming of Age in Lebanon.” Ali Ahmad is remembered for her humility and modesty, but also for her forward thinking and her drive to advocate for the rights of children and women. Collaborations as such allow LAU to ensure the continuity of its legacy, and at the same time allow our alumni and friends to reflect on the rich history made within the walls of this historic university.

STUDENT PROFILE CHRISTELLE BARAKAT

Distinguished List student Christelle Barakat is not your typical high achiever. In her third year at LAU pursuing a BA in political science/international affairs, she has managed to not only maintain stellar grades, but also be passionately involved in a number of activities, clubs and initiatives that take up a massive slice of her already hectic schedule. From founding and running LAU’s Book Club and serving as treasurer of the International Affairs Club, to training middle school students participating in the Model Arab League and playing active roles in the Model UN, Barakat is no stranger to burning the midnight oil.

“ It’s always about giving back to the society that has believed in me — to friends, to family, to LAU for its support. ”

“I have 24 hours in a day. So it’s a matter of maximizing those 24 hours,” she says. However, her efficiency is the result of more than just time management, she explains. “It’s always about giving back to the society that has believed in me — to friends, to family, to LAU for its support.” “It’s not about time; it’s about passion and willingness to work hard and good management of that time,” says Barakat, who is energetic and cheerful on a busy spring day during final exams period, showing no signs of exhaustion despite her rigorous schedule. That is because she truly enjoys giving back, and even plans to make that part of her career. “I would like to work at an embassy, serve my country as a diplomat, or be a staff member at the United Nations, with the ultimate goal of being able to make a change no matter where I end up,” says Barakat, who also has her eye on getting a master’s degree and a PhD. If her work ethic is any indication of her future, she is off to a great start with her long-term goals, which she attributes to the life lessons she has learned at LAU. She also believes her LAU education and civic engagement has helped her secure prestigious opportunities such as a training trip to Portugal for an Erasmus+ program, and a five-week academic exchange program through the US Department of State’s Study of the United States Institute for Student Leaders – Religious Pluralism program. Barakat’s impressive achievements largely stem from LAU’s emphasis on shaping well-rounded leaders, but she also thanks her access to the university environment, which was initially outside her reach. “Scholarships and financial aid were the reason I was able to consider attending LAU in the first place,” explains Barakat, who values these opportunities, and especially the work-study dimension of financial aid, which she says is positioning her for success in her future career.

NAMING FACILITIES

Naming opportunities are a unique way to make an impact at LAU because they give supporters a chance to name tangible entities such as buildings and public spaces, individual rooms and suites, and more. There are also opportunities to name intangible entities such as schools, chairs, programs, positions, scholarships, and endowments. Gifts towards naming an intangible entity can vary widely, however, contributions towards naming a facility ranges from $2,000 to $2,500 per square meter, which is determined by the spaceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s functionality, visibility, and technological components. ENDOWMENTS

Endowments, whether money or financial assets, are donated with the intent of being invested to grow the principal and provide additional income for future investing and expenditures. For universities around the world — including LAU — endowments are vitally important as they provide permanent, self-sustaining sources of funding that create stability, flexibility, and opportunity for the long-term. More specifically, through endowments, LAU is able to create a safety net for any unforeseen circumstances as well as extra resources to help support critical areas such as scholarships and financial aid, campus expansion needs, and any unexpected operational expenses. LAU’s endowment is divided into three different funds: general, schools, and financial aid. With the growing economic challenges faced by students and their families, financial aid is the biggest endowment that requires the most support. By giving to this fund, and/or any of the others, donors can make sure their contributions make a lasting impact for many years to come and touch countless lives. At the close of Fiscal Year 2018, LAU’s investment portfolio — which encompasses endowments — closed at approximately $536.1 million, a gain of 8.9% from the previous year. To ensure a financially sound future for the university, the Office of Development continues to seek endowment gifts while the investment committee, finance and investment offices, and investment consultants focus their attention on winning strategies while monitoring diligently the endowment portfolio, assessing market conditions, and building a strategic asset allocation mix and robust manager selection processes.

LAU ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS The following funds were established to provide ongoing financial aid to deserving, yet economically disadvantaged students. ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Gifts towards LAUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s various annual scholarship funds provide the university with the resources needed to maintain its promise of making a university education a reality for countless deserving students. These gifts are disbursed during the year in which they are donated, and help to sustain and expand scholarships so that as many possible financially challenged students have the opportunity to experience the greatness of an LAU education.

During Fiscal Year 2018, LAU provided just over $31.7 million in scholarships and financial aid to 4,276 deserving students much of which came from generous donors who contribute towards annual scholarships. Essentially, annual scholarship gifts have a vital and immediate impact on students who might otherwise not be able to afford a university education. In turn, LAUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to provide generous scholarship and financial aid packages ensures the institution attracts the best and brightest youth.

Gifts of any amount towards scholarships and endowments are greatly appreciated, especially given that the number of need-based applicants far exceeds the recipients. To this end, supporters can donate any amount they wish, but they also have the unique opportunity to name an annual scholarships grant to memorialize a loved one or honor a family name. These named annual scholarship grants can be established with a minimum gift of $1,000.
