All Australia Awards students must retain a copy of the Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook, as it is their key reference document in relation to the administration of Australia Awards. The Handbook is updated annually in January and can be downloaded from: aid.dfat.gov.au/Publications/Pages/ scholar-handbook.aspx
CHILD CARE Australia Awards students may be eligible to access government support such as the Childcare Benefit and Childcare Rebate. New Australia Awards students can contact the Department of Human Services about support available and how to access these services. T 131 272 (Monday to Friday, 8.30 am – 4.45 pm) or 131 107 (Automated Child Support Information Service) humanservices.gov.au/customer/ themes/families Students may also use a government online service to search for suitable childcare options (see page 17). For further information on students with children and their schooling please also see page 18.
After your arrival La Trobe’s Australia Awards Student Contact Officers are the first port of call for all of your queries. They also refer you to a range of on‑campus and off‑campus support and services. Student Contact Officers (see details below left) are also responsible for monitoring and reporting on Australia Awards students’ progress, and provide ongoing advice about accessing the range of available scholarship entitlements. Australia Awards students are encouraged to utilise all available academic support to enhance their studies, both within their college, the Student Learning unit, and through the Supplementary Academic Support funds available as part of their scholarship.

Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students on an Australia Awards scholarship are encouraged to register for the Postgraduate Essentials program at the beginning of their candidature, to assist with their transition to research at La Trobe. HDR students are also encouraged to access the full range of activities and resources offered by the University’s Student Contact Officers (see left), and Research Education and Development (RED) Unit.
