As the wildflowers raise their petals to the sun, the residents of Darling crawl out of their winter hibernation, shake out their spring feathers, and turn their quaint village into a vibrant hive of activity.

rom August to October, the fertile soil of the Darling district gives birth to the wildflowers. But Darling is also a cultural hub all year round. It’s here where you will find Evita Bezuidenhout’s Perron. Tannie Evita, as she is fondly known to South Africans, is our most renowned political satirist and cabaret artist. Her home and surrounds contain two theatres, a restaurant and a museum, or as Evita calls it, ‘Nauseum’, which holds a vast collection of apartheid era pictures, posters and letters.

There is also a Boerassic Park filled with life-size statues which reflect the ridiculous side of the South African political world. The most memorable cement statue in the garden is that of the beleaguered extreme left leader, Eugene Terreblanche, falling of his horse during a parade. Once you’re done with reflection and laughter, you can sit down to a wholesome plate of food at Evita’s restaurant. If you enjoy something a little different, you should be in Darling for the annual Voorkamerfest, from 31 August to 2 September 2012.

The Voorkamerfest, which means ‘front room festival’ in Afrikaans, is a collaboration of performance artists and musicians which takes place in residents’ homes. What sets this festival apart is that you book a theatre route in advance. The venues and performers remain a surprise until everyone arrives at the various destinations. Evita’s Perron is the main hub of this arts fest. The six routes consist of three Voorkamerfest stops each, with a 25-minute performance in every front room, which range from small township houses to grand Victorian
dwellings. Once you’ve had your cultural fill, head to Duckitt Nurseries which has an open day on the first Saturday of the month, from May to November. This is the only time the Cymbidium orchids are on view to the public. This nursery has been in existence since 1979 and is situated approximately 3km south of Darling. If you prefer your flowers out in the wild, then Burgherspost Wine Estate should be on your itinerary. Here, right at the foot of the picturesque Dassenberg Granite

The ultimate floral extravaganza that cannot be missed is the 95th Darling Wildflower Show (14-16 September).

Hill, you can enjoy a guided flower and game drive. Along the route you will encounter a variety of African mammals (including Bontebok, Eland, Red Hartebeest and Zebra), and a variety of bird species. Next door to Burgherspost is Cloof Wine Estate. Cloof has a delectable selection of wines including their Daisy Darling white wines that are tasty and easy on the pocket. Together, the two farms produce top quality grapes for the wine market. If money is not an issue then don’t forget to stop at Groote Post wine farm to stock up for your wine collection. The winery is set in a lovely green valley that has the Klawer River running through it. The ultimate floral extravaganza
that cannot be missed is the 95th Darling Wildflower Show (14-16 Sept). Every imaginable species of indigenous flora will be on display, with experts available to offer information. The show also has a green footprint. Most of the income from the show goes towards conservation initiatives like the Darling Flora Project. Food and refreshment stalls serve tasty home-made treats and drinks. This year, the price of your entrance ticket includes a lazy tractor ride to a private vlei, a marsh of sorts, which is otherwise inaccessible to the public, where you will be able to view some of the most spectacular wildflowers in bloom.

is snugly nestled between the Groot Drakenstein, Wemmershoek and Franschhoek mountain ranges. Here you will find undulating hills covered in vineyards laden with grapes. The orange groves are plentiful and bursting with juicy fruit. Less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town, this village is fondly referred to as the gourmet capital of South Africa. Celebrity chefs such as Reuben Riffel and Margot Janse draw diners from across the country with their delicious food. Numerous restaurants line the streets. More than 50 wine farms, some dating back to the 16th century, are scattered along the green lung of the valley. It’s also an art lover’s paradise. Huguenot, the main road, has more than 20 galleries and a string of international and local clothing and specialty shops. I find myself at one of the many cosy sidewalk cafés with the smell of freshly baked baguettes and roasted coffee drifting out onto the cobblestone courtyards. I have already stopped at my favourite shop, Huguenot Fine Chocolates, and spent way too much money, as always, on myself and gifts for the people in my life. Here you will find decadent Belgian chocolate blended with South African audacity and homegrown ingredients. On my lap is a map of the local vineyards and galleries that I received from the helpful lady at the tourist information kiosk. I have one day to quench my thirst for provocative art and world-class wines. Of course it is impossible to visit all the galleries and vineyards in a day. Don’t despair. Many vineyards have added visual art to their beautiful assault on our sense of taste and smell. What’s better than sipping on a luscious wine whilst discussing art in a breathtakingly beautiful setting?

Franschhoek’s art offering is an eclectic mix of heritage meets modern drama. Founded in 1688 by the French Huguenots, the village has roots crawling under the ocean from Europe to Africa. Modern galleries such as JustRock and African Art Gallery feature exquisitely crafted, abstract, rock art from Zimbabwean and South African artists. Close by you will find Artefact which houses a contemporary collection of art created by a variety of artists from Franschhoek. Many of the artists on display deliver hilarious, and often scathing, social and political commentary. After the morning’s fix of main street art, I amble to the edge of the village to sample Haute Cabrière’s Methode Cap Classique. The winery is situated on a hill just to the side of the Huguenot monument and it has spectacular views of the valley below. It is a gorgeous sunny day and under ancient trees lining an extensive terrace, I enjoy oysters, delicious tapas, and freshly baked ciabatta. Haute Cabrière Restaurant has recently undergone a makeover, including an interior redesign, and a menu update. Dressed in crisp white linens and featuring a series of colourful artworks, many of them by cellar master and Haute Cabrière founder, Achim von Arnim, the restaurant is a stylish version of its former self. After lunch it is time to browse through the bookshops before more wine tasting and art. Treasure House Books has thousands of new, second hand, rare and collectable books. They also stock a selection of original art and vinyl LP’s. The Franschhoek food, wine and gallery route map comes in handy. The map indicates whether there is an art gallery connected to a wine farm, and of course, where you
can find it. From there I plan the rest of my afternoon. I slowly meander through the galleries tasting the lovely local wines, chatting to winemakers, gallery owners, and even designers. One very interesting couple is designer Mark Bain and his wife Mary-Anne. They own the Sofa Studio. Mary Anne shows me the old school drafting table that her husband uses to design the most provocative and unusual sofas and chairs. After they have planned out the design, she selects richly coloured and decadent fabrics that make you want to sink into the nearest sofa. More than 15 wine farms have galleries on the premises and La Motte has to be one of the finest examples of what happens when good wine and great art meet in a picturesque setting. Here you will find the La Motte museum that features a history of the wine farm and Cape Dutch architecture. A large room is dedicated to one of South Africa’s giants of art, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, and a selection of work by contemporary artists. The sun starts to sink behind the mountains, bathing the valley in a golden glow. My final stop is Rupert and Rothschild. This is where the vigneron creates my favourite wine. The breathtaking location of the farm, the small selection of superior wine, and the excellent service definitely makes this one of the classiest experiences in Franschhoek. I usually stock up on my own wine collection and select a few good bottles for friends and family. They’re not cheap, but they have incredible style and good taste. Too soon it is time to go back to Cape Town. There are still many circles on my map marking galleries and wine farms to be visited, next time.

“Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone”, is how W.H. Auden begins one of his most celebrated poems. Reminiscing about my unforgettable week of sailing around the Seychelles, I’d continue by saying, “leave your worries at home with your shoes, and forget your internet addiction. You’ve reached paradise on earth. ” Consisting of more than a hundred granite islands, this piece of heaven is the result of tectonic movement which happened millions of years ago when India drifted away from Africa and Madagascar, leaving behind crumbs of granite in its wake. Since then, thanks to its geographic isolation, these small green gems in the middle of the Indian Ocean, have remained as the pristine islands that are well known today as some of the most sought after holiday destinations. Considering its location, it is easy to understand why taking a boat is the best way to hop around the Seychelles islands. We, my husband and my two children aged eight and four, had seven days to explore seven different islands. We were soon to discover the unique charm of each island one. We decided to head to Praslin on the morning of our arrival in Mahe, the main island where the International airport is situated. Firstly, we popped in at the daily market in Victoria to take on board enough fresh food for the next few days, as the other islands are not always well-stocked. We sailed for about four hours before arriving at the bay where we planned to spend the night. There were just two more boats so the only sounds we could hear were the twittering of birds and the crashing of waves onto the rocks and a pearly white beach. Beside the dreamlike scenery we were left gob-smacked by our first dinner on board. I still cannot believe what our skipper Maurice had managed to create out of the Barbie sized kitchenette on our catamaran. We started with the freshest tuna Carpaccio, which was prepared from the catch of the day, caught only three hours earlier. We tucked into grilled red snapper fillets marinated in a traditional Creole sauce accompanied by scrumptious vegetables. To top it all, we even had a home-made, or rather boat-made, dessert consisting of banana loaf.

What makes a boating holiday priceless is that you can forget about your usual, and often annoying, morning routine back home. All you need is your bathing suit for an early jump in the sea. The view of the underwater aquarium with its vast number of fish species and colourful corals will have you smiling for at least half a day. Once you realise that you daily work-out is done, you will smile for the rest of the day. Very close to Praslin is Curieuse Island, a Marine National Park managed by the government. Many islands in the Seychelles are protected by local authorities and you have to pay a visitors fee. Unfortunately they don’t accept Rands, so be sure to take enough Dollars or Euros. Adults pay about $23 each, per island, and kids go free. After riding and feeding the giant tortoises that make up a big percentage of the island population - the only other residents are the rangers- we shared the barbeque spot on the beach with a few other tourists and locals. The exotic lunch was a good opportunity to break the privacy of our holiday somewhat and to enjoy more delicious fresh food. The next day we changed scenery and headed to La Digue, the island that truly stole my heart. This time we were welcomed in the harbour by a heavy tropical rain burst and loud reggae music which plunged us

right into the island mood. Exploring La Digue gave us a chance to stretch our legs after the limited space on the boat. One great way to discover the island is to rent a bike, Seychelles Rupee (SCR) 150 each for the day, and to follow the paths that take you to the remote places. If you are in need of pampering, visit the Spa at the Le Domaine de l’Orangerie, the luxury hotel set next to the harbour. Personally I dubbed La Digue as the Jamaica of the Indian Ocean, and fortunately for us, the island has less crime than its Caribbean sister island. We left this heavenly island after two fun-filled days and with a promise to soon return. We set sail for the Grand Soeur, a privately managed island with an incredible marine life. I’m not joking by saying that I haven’t seen such a well-preserved underwater environment since watching the movie Finding Nemo. We had the unique opportunity to swim and play with a hawksbill turtle among an infinite number of other marine species, such as surgeonfish, angelfish, parrotfish and manta rays. The fact that we are still able to visit one of the last paradises on earth is only possible due to a great conservation program by the Seychelles Government. The message for sustainable tourism is clear, ‘Don’t leave anything behind and bring home nothing else but memories and photographs’.

HE GORGEOUS SOUTH AFRICAN ACTRESS, CHARLIZE THERON, WILL CELEBRATE NEARLY 10 YEARS OF UNPRECEDENTED SILVER SCREEN SUCCESS WHEN SHE TURNS 37 IN AUGUST.
2012 is certainly her year as she stars in no less than 3 different movies. She plays a writer afflicted with an existential crisis in Young Adult. She is the wicked witch in Snow White and the Huntsman which is the action fantasy version of the Brothers Grimm’s fairytale. In the science-fiction film Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott and set in a spaceship, Charlize is a business woman on a dangerous mission to find an ancient creature from a remote planet. Perhaps the film hints at an Alien prequel? Regardless of the film that she appears in or the role she plays, Charlize glows with her own inner light, and she remains a consummate professional. However, if you ask her what she considers her biggest success to date, her reply is surprisingly humble, “The fact that I no longer have to steal bread from restaurant tables. Seriously, when I decided to become an actress I prayed not to have to do other jobs to survive. Being able to provide for myself only by acting is for me my biggest success.” Although she moved to Los Angeles when she was 19 and became an American in 2007, Charlize remains very close to South Africa, her country of origin. I met her in New York for the launch of Young Adult, shortly before she had to fly to London for the presentation of Snow White. She lives alone in an ocean-front villa in Malibu. She is happily single after being in a long-term relationship with the English actor Stuart Townsend. In Young Adult she appears quite humble. In Snow White and the Huntsman she enjoys playing the role of the evil stepmother. It is however in Prometheus that she appears again in all her glory; a stylish ambassador for many luxury fashion and beauty brands. She’s also committed to a number of fundraising initiatives, especially those fighting the abuse of African women. It is no surprise that she has targeted womens’ rights. At the tender age of 15, she watched her mother kill her violent and alcoholic father. Her mother was later declared innocent because the court found that she acted in self-defence. Q. In most of your roles, it seems that you are trying to minimise your beauty. Shouldn’t being gorgeous make your life easier? A. I often get this type of question, ‘You are so beautiful you should have had an easy life!’ Not at all. You don’t know anything about me then. My life has never been easy, rather the opposite. I needed to add a few layers to protect myself in order to be able to get what I want from show biz. Q. So how much of you is in the character of the bad witch in Snow White? A. Come on! Nothing obviously. It is just an acting game. I don’t consider myself terribly vain. I always like to meet people and play roles that I have very little in common with. Although, according to Carl Jung, we are all subconsciously linked to each other. Right? Q. What do you need to be happy? A. I think happiness is overestimated. I don’t understand why people expect to be constantly happy. In other words, I don’t think this is possible. If someone is always happy, he cannot really appreciate it. I have been miserable for most of my life, so I can give the right value to those moments in which I felt happy, enjoying them in small sips as you do a fine glass of wine. Just like the ones we produce in South Africa, by the way. Any opportunity to promote my country!
Q. Do you consider yourself lucky? A. Of course. I can’t say otherwise. From a certain moment onwards I had shameless fortune. But you also need to be able to seduce it. I’m not totally insane, so I do recognise my good luck, and everyday I’m grateful for all the opportunities I received in my life, and to be a successful actress. Q. How do you feel about being single, without a permanent partner? A. Good! I had two long relationships in the last 15 years. Since becoming an adult, this is the first time I’m on my own. And I feel well. I’m not afraid of being alone. My mother is close to me and I also have many friends. I work a lot, and I’m at peace with myself. Q. Like Mavis in Young Adult, do you also dream about recovering a past love? A. No, not at all! I look forward. I’m not someone who retraces her steps, like Thumbelina, or many other women I know, constantly unhappy. I still feel affection for Stuart (Townsend) with whom I enjoyed eight years in an intense and tender relationship. But I don’t go back to anyone and to anywhere. I’m South African but I got my U.S. passport four years ago. I know where I come from and where I am now, but I don’t want to know where I will be. I like surprises and I don’t like delving into the past.
Q. Can you tell us about your commitment to the plight of African women and families? A. My commitment started on a personal level, and it has slowly increased to something much more organised, up to involving the United Nations. My goal is to raise public awareness about the endemic violence that women in Africa suffer by the hands of their own partners. But my country is not only about disgrace and poverty. I would rather say the opposite. South Africa is going through a huge economic development thanks to Mandela and the anti-apartheid movement. Cape Town is a beautiful city, not too big, hospitable, stylish and cosmopolitan. Cape Town is a melting pot of many different cultures. I often go back to my home town, Benoni. I was born and raised on a farm with all kinds of animals, and my rustic side is still with me. One of my targets for South Africa is to try and assist the farmers working their fertile land and helping them develop a local economy.

Playing the Moldovans at Tennis
Although Bryson is American, his writing is steeped in that wonderfully dry English humour. In Neither Here nor There, Bryson retraces his youthful backpacking journey through Europe - in the early seventies - in search of enlightenment, beer, and women. The result is a hilarious pilgrimage which takes you from the tundra of Scandinavia to the chaotic tumult of Istanbul. In-between hopping from one European city to the next, Bryson laments his youth and explores how time, knowledge, and new responsibilities have altered his perceptions. It’s not a definitive guide to European travel. However, it is a great introductory read if you are planning on undertaking a journey to that part of the world.
British comedian and writer Tony Hawks’ latest book is not your typical travel story. In this best-seller, from which a movie has been produced, Hawks makes an inebriated bet with his buddy stating that he can beat the Moldova national football team at tennis. Why? Well, just because he thinks he can and his buddy thinks he can’t. What follows in Playing the Moldovans is a very funny quest that has very little to do with tennis or football. Through the seemingly pointless act of playing the entire team he inadvertently discovers the heart and soul of Moldova in a way that will certainly have you laughing out loud from start to finish.

Rooms will have a weight bench, a coat rack strong enough to be used as a pull-up bar, and an exercise mat. The new hotel chain will also focus on healthy food and beverage options. Even if one of the above destinations is not included in your itinerary travel shouldn’t be a reason to break your healthy routine. Pack a few fitness items with an exercise DVD and keep in shape!

CHICKEN BALLOTINE OF BONE
MARROW, MOREL MUSHROOMS, JAPANESE TRUFFLE POMME DUCHESSE, CARROT AND CARDAMOM PUREE SERVED WITH PORT JUS
2 free range Elgin chicken breasts 4 beef marrow bones 50g chopped fresh thyme 2 large carrots 2 large potatoes 2 cardamom seeds 5g Japanese truffles OR 2mls truffle essence 200ml beef stock 100ml port ¼ onion 50ml cream 1 clove of garlic 8 fresh or dried morel mushrooms
Slice the chicken breast down the centre about 2cm deep, working outwards flatten, the breast till flat and even. Season the breast and sprinkle thyme over the entire surface, then place on top of a buttered piece of heavy duty tinfoil. (30cm by 30cm). Next push the raw marrow out of the bones and lie 2 pieces (dependant on length) along the centre of the breast. Roll the breast over the marrow then fold the foil around the breast and roll tightly to form a sausage-like shape, twist the foil opposite directions on either end and fold tips in to secure…set aside. Reduce the port by half then add the stock and reduce again till a good “spooning” consistency is achieved…set aside. Make a basic mash with the potatoes then grate in truffles or add truffle essence, season accordingly then place in a piping bag with a large star nozzle. Pipe the mixture onto a buttered baking tray in small round “hive like” shapes then lightly egg wash. Grill these just before serving till golden brown. 4-8 minutes depending on grill temperature. Peel and chop up the carrots, dice the onion and lightly sweat in a small pot along with the cardamom pods. Add the carrots and garlic then just cover in cold water (chicken stock would be ideal here but water is fine). Cook till soft, remove the pods, add the cream then blend using a stick blender or kitchen processor till a smooth fine puree is achieved…keep aside then reheat to serve. Place the foil wrapped breasts in simmering water and cook for 8-10 minutes , depending on size, remove from the water and foil then pan fry till golden. Put the dried morels in the same water for 45 seconds then lightly pan fry in butter and thyme. Slice the ballotine into 3 equal pieces. Plate the duchesse potato alternating with the chicken then spoon or pipe the puree on either side of the plate. Garnish with morel mushrooms and chervil.
