fter almost 20 years of reporting on the new fall season shows, we are happy to say that the 2010 primetime line-up elevates Latino characters to new heights, characters in never before seen roles and positive images. NBC breaks grounds with two such roles: the first Latino U.S. President and First Lady (Lisa Vidal) in The Event; and Outlaw where Jimmy Smits plays a renegade Supreme Court Justice. The list continues as you will find in the pages to follow. When Latin Heat first started in 1992, Latinos were mostly cast in parts that called for series regulars that were maids, gardeners, gang members or illegal aliens. Those roles still exist, but we are glad to have the more positive roles be the focus of this year’s shows. Another welcome development is the growing list of the Latino producers. In addition to the highlighted executive producers on page 10, producers of some of the top shows include: Wayne Carmona (HBO’s Entourage); Miguel Arteta (who also directs on HBO’s Enlightened); and James Roday who is both star and producer on his show Psych. In the reality realm producers include: Cris Abrejo, who’s been called the C-list Steven Spielberg with a long list of credits, and who is currently producing La La’s Big Court Wedding and the Untitled Mario Lopez Baby Series; Kevin Lopez (Taking The Stage; Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County); and Rick Tellez (America’s Worst Drivers, The Surreal Live)...but I get ahead of myself that deserves its own spotlight in a future issue. Take a “look-see” at some of the featured shows and talent. We are excited to bring it to you in our new digital magazine. Kudos to our talented art director Angela Ortíz for a terrific job with our new look!

Latin Heat

The 2010-11 primetime TV season is launched. By season’s their careers in May than they were in Septembe Paz de la Huerta Why She Is Hot: This fall she makes her big-time TV debut in one of the most talked-

about mini-series of the season, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. She has Hollywood buzzing already and the show hasn’t even premiered! New York City-based actress/model Paz de la Huerta has been orbiting around the fringe circles of stardom since she landed a role in Cider House Rules at age 12. That will soon end. Paz is about to be launched into full-fledged celebrity status with her breakout as role as Lucy Danziger, a 1920s Ziegfeld Follies chorine and mistress to Atlantic City kingpin Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi). Paz’s Lucy exudes more than sensuality. She is an unrelenting sexual animal whose every waking moment is dedicated to keeping Nucky wedged firmly between her thighs. Born María de la Paz Elizabeth Sofía Adriana de la Huerta in 1984 to United Nations women’s issues attorney Judith Bruce and Spanish Duke Iñigo de la Huerta, Paz has worked almost non-stop since age four, modeling in campaigns for Alberta Ferreti, Uniqlo and Wolford, racking up over 30 film and TV credits while managing to be linked romantically to such celebs as Jack Nicholson, Orlando Bloom and rocker Scott Weiland. In an interview, Judith Bruce described her daughter as, “Genghis Khan meets Marie Antoinette.” Paz also starred in the 2009 big screen release Enter the Void, directed by Gasper Noe. LH

Lea Michele Why She Is Hot: In addition to her talent and her beauty, she was recently nominated for an Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Glee, and although she didn’t win this year, the show and its actors did take home four Emmys in 2010. Lea Michele, who portrays the brilliantly talented but angst-ridden Rachel on the ragingly successful FOX series, knows she has fallen into a role of a lifetime. “I think what’s so great about Rachel is that she knows what she wants and she knows what she loves, and that’s exactly how I was,” Michele affirms. “When I was eight years old, I fell in love with singing, and ever since then it’s been my passion. And Rachel is the exact same way.” Obviously, TV critics and fans are in accord, elevating Michele to 2010 Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Actress–Comedy or Musical. 2010 TIME Magazine named her as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Born in The Bronx of a Catholic Italian-American mother and a father of SpanishSephardic Jewish ancestry, Michele decided on a whim, at age eight, to try out for a musical in New York. Two weeks later she was starring on Broadway, making her debut in 1995 as a replacement in the role of Young Cosette in the original New York production of Les Misérables, followed by the role of Tateh’s daughter in the 1998 original Broadway cast of Ragtime, and the role of Chava in the 2004 Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Currently, Michele is recording the voice of Dorothy for the muchanticipated $30 million animated feature, Dorothy of Oz, a sequel to The Wizard of Oz, due out in 2012. LH

Hot List

s end, who will be on “The Hot List,” even further along in er? Here are some worthy Latin Heat candidates. Sofia Vergara Why She Is Hot: Just look at her! But aside from that it’s her comedic timing and act-

ing skills in Modern Family that led to her Emmy nomination, while giving Latinas a good name by playing a strong, smart Latina…accent and all. In 2005, when Colombia-born Sofia Vergara was introduced to the television press as a series regular on the ABC series Hot Properties, there was skepticism that this bombshell of a Latin beauty would have the requisite acting skills and comedic timing to make it on a primetime television sitcom. The show didn’t stick around long enough for Vergera to prove herself one way or another. Today, all questions about her acting and comedy talents have been put to rest as Vergera has flowed effortlessly into the persona of Gloria Delgado-Pritchet in the hit ABC series, Modern Family, along the way earning a 2010 Primetime Emmy Award Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Born in 1972 in Barranquilla, Colombia,Vergera is the only Hispanic actress who started in a U.S. Hispanic network (co-hosting the Univision show, A que no te atreves (“I Dare You”) and successfully made the move to the general market. Her first notable acting job in English was in the 2003 movie Chasing Papi. “When I first entered show business, I believed it was only going to be temporary until I graduated from dental school,” she reveals. “I was two semesters shy of graduating when I took a deep breath and decided to make the move from Bogata to Miami to really give this business a try.” Further exhibitng her impressive performance range, Vergara recently enjoyed a five-week stint on Broadway as “Mama” Morton in the revival of Chicago. LH

Rico Rodriguez Why He Is Hot: He’s a scene-stealer as Manny in the Emmy-winning Modern Family.

At only 12 years of age, he is a consummate actor and one of TV’s most impressive child stars to come our way in a long time. This is a talent with a long career in Hollywood ahead of him. Many television viewers feel that Rico Rodriguez is Manny Delgado, the overweight, but relentlessly optimistic teen heartthrob wannabe. “No, I am not Manny,” he says. “And I’ve never had that type of part before. I think he is a great character to play. Manny has a lot of passion.” Actually, Rodriguez can be pretty passionate himself. Born in College Station, Texas in 1999, Rodriguez made the move from Texas to Los Angeles with his mom and sister to support his sister’s dream of becoming an actress. Soon he was enrolled in acting classes, determined to make a name for himself. Before the role of Manny came along, Rodriguez had already stacked up a list of impressive credits. He booked his first role in the video How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Next came the role of Chanchito in the film Epic Movie (2007). His television credits include co-starring as Young Guillermo in Jimmy Kimmel Live, Cory in the House, ER, ‘Til Death, iCarly, Nip/Tuck, Surviving Suburbia and NCIS. He has also has been seen in commercials for Roundtable Pizza, Time Warner Cable, Dodge, Wal-Mart, Blue Cross, Chrysler and AT&T. Rodriguez promises, “I have some fun stuff coming up. I play the kid janitor in the soon-to-be-released Opposite Day, and another great part in the upcoming The No-Sit List. LH

Jimmy Smits

Turns Outlaw By Julio Martinez

J

immy Smits may not have been able to play out the life of Matt Santos, the idealistic Texas Congressmen who came out of retirement to be elected the first Latino U.S. President in NBC’s former long-running series, West Wing (2004-06). However, he is back in D.C. in the pilot episode of his new NBC drama, Outlaw (series airs Fridays, 10 p.m.). He is introduced as Cyrus Garza, an ultra-conservative Latino U.S. Supreme Court Justice who upholds the Constitution, putting his own moral beliefs aside. Socially, Cyrus Garza has some notable character flaws. Then what does Garza do? He gives it all up to go into private practice, taking on today’s biggest and most controversial legal cases. Garza may be conservative in his judicial philosophies but his psyche is still imbued with the civil rights struggles of his recently deceased father who marched with Cesar Chavez—whose memory now haunts him. Executive producer David Kissinger recalls how the show was conceived, “The idea came to me last summer (2009) when the Sotomayor confirmation hearings were going on, and there was a lot of writing about her life and the dues she had to pay to get to that point. So it struck me that someone who has worked that hard and achieved that incredible position–what would it take to bring that person to the point that they give it all up? And what would they give it up for? It seemed like a very dynamic starting place for a show about the law. And of course, in Jimmy Smits we felt we had the perfect actor to make it all work on the screen.” Smits’ commitment to the show has him signed on as co-executive producer in addition to star. “I think it is an opportunity to deal with legal matters and hot-button issues that are substantive in terms of a legal show, yet have a character that is outside the box in a lot of different ways. Since we’re at a point where this country’s log-jammed in terms of the political right and left, the fact that this jurist has made such a radical switch does give an opportunity for us to tackle these hot-button issues in a new and kind of fresh way.” Smits’ description of Garza as being ‘outside the box’ is an understatement. U.S. Supreme Court Justices are notoriously private; they usually go out of their way to avoid attention, but Smits’ Garza is nothing like that. In the pilot episode of Outlaw, Garza proves to be a footFALL 2010

loose ladies man, joyously gambling in a casino and even going into serious debt to a bookie. This is a far cry from the emotionally restrained and introspective attorney Smits played on L.A. Law from 1986 to ‘91 or the dedicated but troubled Bobby Simone of NYPD Blue. And it’s equally distant from the corrupt, power-hungry and ultimately murderous politician Miguel Prado that he played for twelve episodes in a 2008 arc on Showtime’s Dexter. Clearly Smits enjoys changing it up, and Garza is another surprise in a continually surprising career. Show creator and executive producer John Eisendrath relishes that surprise. The infamous Dexter arc aside, he says, Smits has a body of work that the public feels is virtuous and liberal, and “now he’s going to play a character filled with vices who is conservative. So I feel like we will have a great deal of leeway to lean into the vices, to let Garza do and say things and be certain ways that we might not otherwise be able to do without Jimmy’s persona playing Garza.” Smits smiles, “No pressure there. I think John’s created a really fascinating character that’s a challenge. It’s a wonderful meal for an actor to play. It’s something different than what I’ve done before. And in this kind of instance, I’m going to be able, as an actor, to tackle, again, stuff that’s very substantive, yet play a character that’s much more loose and comfortable than I’ve had a chance to play in the past. I can’t wait.’ Is Outlaw’s premise too “out of the box” to be believable? Jimmy Smits plays a flawed multi-dimensional character in Cyrus Garza—no one is without flaws. The only difference is, Cyrus Garza’s upbringing on the sidelines of the Cesar Chavez era, in the end, was a strong enough foundation to have one of the highest-ranking legal justices in the nation, come back down to his roots. With the strong lead-in of America’s Got Talent, the September 15th special premiere preview of Outlaw won the 10pm hour with a 6.8/12 Nielsen rating and a strong 10.897 million viewers. Outlaw now moves into its regular slot on Fridays at 10/9c, and hopes its audience follows. Outlaw is a Universal Media Studios Production with Conan O’Brien’s Conaco Productions. Series regulars include David Ramsey, Carly Pope, Jesse Bradford and Ellen Woglom. Taking note of the Latinos involved, they include: Marcos Siega (co-executive producer, series director), Jorge Zamacona (writer/producer) and Roberto Patino (writer). LH

FALL 2010

Latinos have a long and proud history in America. But we are now under attack. The vitriol in the immigration debate, and measures like Arizona’s SB 1070 are creating an environment where Latinos can be treated as second-class citizens. And the rhetoric and tone of this campaign season have crossed the line. We have an opportunity to stop the wave of intolerance. This November 2, stand up and vote for respect.

Shows That Changed the

TV Landscape for Latinos

3

By Elia Esparza CHICO

AND THE

MAN

(NBC, 1974-’78) Premise: Cantankerous old and lonely auto mechanic Ed Brown hires fast-talking, upbeat twentysomething Chicano Chico Rodriguez to work in his shop. Chico also happens to live there, too. Memorable Episode: “Chumps Ain’t Champs” (Jan. ’77, Season 3, Episode 14). Chico decides to become a boxer in order to improve himself and get out of the barrio. One of the last episodes taped by Freddie Prinze. The episode aired January 28, 1977 and Prinze killed himself on January 29. The Impact: When standup comic Freddie Prinze exploded onto the national scene in Chico and the Man, he created what is today the Latino comedy scene. All of our Latino comics of today have this show, and Freddie, to thank. The pairing of Jack Albertson with Freddie Prinze is considered by TV experts to be one of the all-time great duos, in the same league as Lucy and Ricky, Fred and Ginger, and George and Gracie.

RESURRECTION BLVD. (Showtime Networks, 2000-’02) Premise: The trials and tribulations of the Santiago clan, a Mexican-American family with three generations of boxers living and loving in East Los Angeles. The Impact: The first and longest-running Latino-themed drama in the history of U.S. American English-language television. It created more jobs for English-speaking Latinos (in front of and behind the camera) than any other production at that time in history. Over three seasons, Resurrection Boulevard (RB) did more to depict Latinos in a positive light than any other show. RB showcased a host of Latino stars on a consistent basis to mainstream television audiences, including Tony Plana, Marisol Nichols, Michael DeLorenzo, Elizabeth Peña, and Daniel Zacapa. It also introduced several Latinos who launched their careers–Nicholas Gonzalez, Ruth Livier and Mauricio Mendoza. Finally, RB jump-started the careers of many Latino writers, producers, directors and various other Latino crew members.

GEORGE LOPEZ (ABC, 2002-’07) Premise: Comedian George Lopez stars as the manager of a Los Angeles manufacturing plant and the father of a wacky family, including two crazy kids and an even nuttier mother. The Impact: George Lopez is the first and only Latino-themed comedy to run for six years and go into syndication. The show originally aired on ABC from March 27, 2002, to May 8, 2007 and entered syndication one month after ABC cancelled the show. It currently airs on Nick At Nite, on independent stations, and on affiliates of Fox, The CW and MyNetworkTV, as well as The CW Plus stations in the United States and on Telelatino in Canada. Since going into syndication, George Lopez continues to be Nick At Nite’s highest rated series and one of the most popular sitcoms on cable TV. LH FALL 2010

Underwood and Vidal:

An Untypical Latino Couple

B

The Event: Groundbreaking Roles for Latino Characters lair Underwood, an African American from Seattle, and Lisa Vidal, the daughter of Puerto Rican parents who settled in Manhattan, play U.S. President Elias Martinez and First Lady Christina Martinez in NBC’s The Event. These are groundbreaking roles in U.S. television for Latinos. Perhaps NBC’s decision to put Latinos in the White House had something to do with what is becoming an increasingly well-known fact: Latinos are watching English-language television in a big way. Early this September Nielsen released a study that found that “40% of new U.S. TV Homes this season will be U.S. Latino households.” So, in their private moments, do Elias and Christina ever speak Spanish to one another? “We’re working on it,” says Vidal. “In looking over the scripts, we have found moments that it would be natural for them to incorporate Spanish into the text.” “She’s my coach,” adds Underwood. “The bottom line is: what works the best in projecting the believability of the characters and the storyline? The story always comes first.” “You know, the part of Elias was originally offered to a very prominent Latino actor,” Underwood explained to Latin Heat Features Editor Julio Martinez in a recent interview. (Read the full interview online at www.latinheat.com). The Event premiered on September 20 and continues Mondays at 9 pm on NBC. —BH
