rnold Daghani: When we were rounded up for deportation the guard noticed my paintbrushes. "Take those with you, they might save your life." At the slave labour camp Mikhailovka I started portraits of the officers and was soon known as "The Artist." "Hey Artist are you hungry?" "Yes" "Then paint yourself a loaf of bread." Nearly 500 people were killed at our camp. Only two escaped, my wife Nanino and myself because we were away from the camp – I was commissioned by an officer to paint flowers on parchment for a lampshade in Gaissin for a girl he knew. At Gaissin, Nanino and I were helped to flee across the river Bug.

So now I paint every face I can remember and I write the names of those I can't. That's my roll call. I paint everyone who couldn't paint themselves a way out. I remember them so I tell you. It's the least I can do. What a nice world! Guard: Shut up, we don't need to hear the names of any more dead Jews. Arnold Daghani: Remember Mikhailovka! The above is from the people's opera written by Angi Mariani and myself, see lifeanddeath.org for more. Arnold Daghani came to live in Brighton where he died in 1985. Most of his work is stored at The Keep in Brighton. People know after Guernica that Picasso was a documentary artist and was also a guest at the Sussex home of the great photography documentary artist Lee Miller. Arnold Daghani is in my view, right up there as one of the greatest documentary artist/writers of all time. Samira Teuteberg, archivist from The Keep and myself will tell Daghani's incredible life story and discuss his legacy. Do come – it's 5.30pm on Wed 25 Jan at The Keep. Holocaust Memorial Day is 27 January. You can hear Bill on Sarah Gorrell's BBC Sussex radio show every Monday around 4.20pm picking the best TV! www.bit.ly/2iNOkhk

RENT BOOK TALES NOW & THEN Andy Garth The Landlady > BIG mistakes

> From neon to free coffee

I

t’s a happy new year for some, but not for me as The Cuban Boyfriend is in Cuba without me. We are going together for a fortnight in February, but that’s not soon enough for my liking. I am lucky enough to have many options in order to cheer myself up, so the first thing I did was book a flight to Dubai for this month. It was very cheap, as I used airmiles to pay for some of it. Besides, I’m staying with my good friend M and mainly hanging out on his boat for the five days I’ll be there.

“ Sell a flat of high value and buy two of lower value ” Another thing I’ve decided to do to cheer myself up – and keep myself occupied – is invest in property again. Like many people, I have decided that it would be a good idea to sell a flat of high value and buy two of lower value, one to rent and one to do up and sell. The renter would be in Brighton and the doerupper in Hastings, meaning I wouldn’t have to get a mortgage, cutting out a lot of stressful nonsense. At any rate, last time I tried to get a mortgage, I was point blank refused as many lenders don’t allow rental income to be classed as part of your income. When confronted with rubbish like this, I tend to dig my heels in and work out another way of doing things, hence my current quest. My initial property search didn’t go too well, which was probably my fault as I turned up at an Estate Agents’ with holey leggings on a battered old bicycle. The girl at the desk clearly thought I was some lunatic who was all about wasting her time and immediately made me feel like Oprah Winfrey in the Louis Vuitton shop (where, judging her by her appearance, the sales assistant assumed she couldn’t afford anything), practically sneering at me when I asked how much a studio flat was. Fortunately, over the road in another estate agent, they were charm personified and I’m already thinking of putting an offer in on one of their properties. I am thinking of going back to the first estate agent, dressed like a millionaire and wafting my portfolio in front of the sales lady saying “remember me? Biiiiig mistake.”

I

n the 1930s the cinema was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in Britain and lots of new buildings were purpose built for the industry who wanted their cinema to attract and appeal to the viewing public. The Curzon in Western Road Brighton was no exception with American style neon lights blazing all down the side and the front in 1937 showing the Deanna Durbin film 100 Men And A Girl. I'm sure this building could have probably been seen from space as the approximate 10 metre drop from the roof to the ground floor had a total of eight full length tubes shining like a beacon to draw in the punters (don't rate their EPC rating though!).

“ This building could have probably been seen from space ” The next view of the same cinema from the late 1960s/early 1970s shows that cinemas didn't need the same pizazz as it was now called the Classic and was showing movies that I had to Google, including Divorce American Style with Dick Van Dyke... yep I’ve never heard of it either! And The Cactus Flower which I searched and discovered that it was Goldie Hawn's first major big screen role for which she won an Oscar! A present day photo would of course now show you good old free coffee giving Waitrose who have actually been on the same site for nearly 50 years and during that time grown and expanded to the store it is today. Any questions or for more photos and stuff pop in the shop at 28 Western Road, Hove, BN3 1AF

CAN LANDLORDS

EVER ESCAPE THE LEGISLATIVE

BURDEN? It never seems to stop

H

ardly a month goes by when landlords don’t hear of plans for – or the arrival of – new legislation that demands they jump through more administrative hoops to prove they are providing safe and compliant homes for their tenants. Red tape, certificates, assessments and reports There is only one thing constant about the legislative landscape and that’s the certainty that more of it is on the way. Many landlords feel it is becoming harder to keep up with than ever before – and you can’t help but agree. This is shocking Increasingly landlords are failing to keep up with even the basics. A recent survey by Direct Line for Business found that 10% of landlords have no formal tenancy agreement in place at all. What’s more, where contracts are used, many landlords are unwittingly using legal forms that are far from legally compliant. Direct Line also discovered that of the landlords not using a letting agent, 58% rely on tenancy agreements that are unlikely to provide the legal cover they need. Many have adapted outdated contracts and a growing number are placing their blind faith in tenancy agreements they have downloaded for free on the internet. This is worrying It’s easy to see why landlords are taking shortcuts: it’s hard to keep up with all the demands out there. But, at the same time, would you take such chances with other financial sources of income – like a job contract or a loan agreement? A heavy burden The sad fact is that at the moment, landlords have to adhere to over 140 government statutes and regulations in order to provide a safe and compliant home. That’s a lot to keep track of. Unfortunately the consequences of not being compliant will place you at greater risk of tenant problems and significant fines. It will also, of course, place your tenants in potentially lifethreatening living conditions. This is where I can help On top of the legal compliance issues there are no end of added hassles that eat slowly but surely into your time (and profits). • Day to day maintenance of the property • Finding tenants • Checking tenants • Dealing with tenants • Handling rent arrears • Covering void periods And the list goes on. What if you could forget all these and never have to worry about the ins and outs of letting a property? What if you could just let it and forget it? Well, you can. 20 | LATEST HOMES
