Could you run a marathon? The Running Man Dan Lawson ran eight in a row without stopping and in his own laid back way he tells presenter Guy Lloyd: “That didn’t involve sleep.” Dan is on our Brighton Lights studio sofa with rock band Kovak in our new episode of Brighton Lights. Teenager Melissa Collidge was diagnosed with cancer last summer and her story is continued in Jay Legate’s film Melissa’s World. “It’s nice, people knowing what it’s like to go through it” she says, and this is reality TV as it should be IMHO. Meanwhile, Jenni Davidson reports on The Waste House – yes a house made completely out of rubbish, and no that’s not Guy Lloyd’s student home! Caroline Lucas lays the first stone and Guy’s guests discuss how clean or wasted their houses are. Brighton Lights is at thelatest.tv. Watch this and other shows now including Bmusic’s Noise Reel.

BRAND NEW Exciting new developments from Hillreed Homes

I

f you are looking for a brand new home in a country location with easy access to the sea, then you are in luck. Currently there are two exclusive new developments from Hillreed Homes coming onto the market but you will have to be quick, the property market is showing signs of quickening its pace. According to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the amount of houses sold in the UK reached its highest level in over two and a half years in the three months to February 2013. “Whilst it is interesting to note a general trend across the UK, often sales and market up turns are in ‘pockets’,” says Jo Richards, Head of Sales and Marketing at Hillreed Homes.“Central London is a prime example but the lure of living in a village within easy reach of the sea and good commuting facilities always has a special appeal and a definite ‘desirability factor’.” Hassocks is a charming village in the heart of West Sussex with spectacular views of the South Downs National Park. Brighton is just 11 minutes by train and London mainline stations can be reached in 56 minutes. The A273 links with the A23/M23 and A270 which runs along the South Coast offering access to a choice of resorts. Eastergate in West Sussex, is a picturesque village minutes from the South Downs National Park and Chichester Marina is an easy drive offering a plethora of water sports and activities. Commuting too is good with Portsmouth Harbour being 37 mins by train, Chichester seven minutes, Brighton 42 minutes and London Victoria one hour, 25 minutes.

What’s on offer? The Courts, Hassocks: Named because of its proximity to established tennis courts at South Bank, Keymer Road, The Courts development is in a quiet location within walking distance of open fields and the commuter rail station. There are three brand new bungalows being built, a rare commodity, so interest is expected to be high for one-level living. In addition, there are six houses. Plots 1 & 2 – Linked detached bungalow: The property has a 17’ appox lounge, beautifully presented kitchen/breakfast room, master bedroom with en-suite facilities plus second bedroom, family bathroom and single attached garage. Bungalows: Plot 1 £289,950. Plot 2 £294,950 Plot 3 £349,950. Two bedroom houses from £279,995 and four bedroom houses from £454,950. For further information contact Hillreed Homes direct on 01403 264210 or call selling agents Clifford Dann on 01273 83349. Eastergate: At Rectory Gardens, Old Rectory Drive, Eastergate, there are just four detached houses being built making this a most pleasant, boutique-style development. Set in the peaceful grounds of the old rectory and surrounded by established trees offering quiet seclusion, each of the family homes has been built to an exceptional standard. A ‘Bramley’ house type: Detached, five bedroom executive style home. Four reception rooms plus kitchen/breakfast room, utlity and double garage. Prices from £682,950 to £735,950. For further information call Hillreed Homes on 01403 264210 or Henry Adams New Homes of Chichester on 01243 5333377. www.hillreed.co.uk

Kemp Town Row Mishon Mackay launches a small but stunning new development

M

ishon Mackay New Homes is delighted to announce that Kemp Town Row is ready for viewing, and is selling now. This is an eagerly awaited, small-scale development of just five 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom town houses in an area of Brighton which has been the focus of several new developments in recent years. Convenient for the local hospital, just two blocks from the stylish Kemp Town seafront and just a stroll

to the popular bars, restaurants and eclectic boutiques of Kemp Town village, Kemp Town Row offers a bohemian local ambiance combined with outstanding quality of finish. Located just behind the spectacular and historic Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent, Kemp Town Row is in peaceful Bristol Gardens. Unusually for Brighton, where the majority of properties face east/west, Kemp Town Row has a desirable north/south alignment, Images: Fiona Walker-Arnott

INTO AFRICA

Agents Austin Rees aid a charity mission Austin Rees is delighted to be involved with an exciting trip to Tanzania. Paige, 19, and Georgia, 20, set off for Africa earlier this month. Their journey will take them some 300 miles into the bush of Iringa, where they are volunteering to help in orphanages and schools for children aged between three and twelve years old. These are the children that can’t afford the ‘free’ state schools because of the compulsory contribution added by the government towards the uniform, equipment and food. This fee prevents many of the poorest children attending.

and the outside spaces are southfacing, bringing fantastic sun and sea light into the properties. The ground floor has an open-plan kitchen/living/dining space, with Velfac sliding patio doors leading to the courtyard and patio garden. The kitchen is fully fitted with integrated Smeg appliances. There is a generous cloakroom, with space and plumbing for a washer/drier, making good use of the space. The first floor has two guest rooms, both with built-in wardrobes, plus a fully-tiled family bathroom – with a south-facing window. The second floor is entirely devoted to the master bedroom suite, with well-planned space for wardrobe/dressing area, and a beautifully fitted ensuite wet

room/shower room. This sumptuous retreat has sliding glass doors to a south-facing roof terrace/balcony, with sea views across the rooftops, ideal for morning coffee or a nightcap, watching the lights of Brighton. Flooring is included throughout – wide plank engineered oak for the ground floor, and high quality neutral grey carpet to bedrooms, stairs and landings. Built by a wellregarded local developer, each house comes with a full NHBC warranty, and currently there is no queue in this zone for a residents’ street parking permit. Prices £375,000. For full details and an appointment to view call the sole agents Mishon Mackay New Homes on 01273 829300.

Left to right, Katie Piper, Paige, Georgia and Laura Barling of Austin Rees

Their trip will include working in a school on a Monday to Friday basis where they will assist teachers as well as teaching their own classes. Their spare time will be spent in the orphanages where young children are living with AIDS and HIV. Iringa has one of the highest HIV infection rates in Tanzania. In becoming involved Austin Rees has helped organise the trip and more importantly this has meant that they can provide these children with workbooks, stationary and storybooks.

Richard Hearn finds a star on a fossil-hunt e went to the Jurassic coast, but no, we didn’t find any fossils. (Let’s dissipate any narrative tension straightaway.) Still, there was much to enjoy on our recent holiday, including a guest celebrity. I last went there to Lyme Regis 23 years ago; it was one of two aimedfor places on a hitchhiking tour round the country with a mate, the other destination being the Isle of Arran. (And yes, we did make it there “to be honest, he’s too). I had just read The contented enough in French Lieutenant’s Woman, and there’s a famous a gravel driveway” scene set on the Cobb. Looking for fossils involved staring at your feet while walking along the beach and picking up random pebbles. As this is already a hobby of Youngest™ – to be honest, he’s contented enough in a gravel driveway – and The Boy is really into dinosaurs, this wasn’t a hard sell. I so wanted to find an ammonite. But no. The gift shop, with ammonites at £2.50, made me think we would surely find one. As well as Lyme, we combed the beach at Charmouth and Lulworth Cove. Still no. In other news, we didn’t take Inception to our cottage (a recent holiday tradition), we took The Trip, with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. We’d already seen it, but fantastic to watch again. Three evenings, two episodes a night, done. (I know how boring that makes me sound, but I didn’t do the maths in advance.) Then, the next day’s lunchtime, we went into a cafe and there -–wait for it, drumroll please – was Rob Brydon. I wish I’d spoken to him. (I’ve dissipated that tension again, haven’t I? Sorry). But he was with his family, about to leave, and we were trying to shoehorn our way in to a table, while I wanted to ensure I didn’t choose the wrong pie. I wanted to say I love his work. I wanted to quote that bit about “we rise at – what time’s the battle, about 12... 2 to 3 hours to get there... we rise at 7 – 730 ish.” Later I remembered how much I loved Director’s Commentary. “He was technically a dwarf” etc) I felt too nervous. Instead I took my time over ordering the correct pie. If I’d gone up and expressed how me and the wife had watched two episodes a night for three nights, and expressed this in a cramped cafe, I would have appeared like a stalker. Goddammit, even I would have called the police. To tidily wrap this column up, we didn’t find a fossil except for the one in the shop. However, we did find a real Rob Brydon in a cafe. Funnier and more unique than an ammonite. He can put that quote on his posters.

he first time I discovered the Kent countryside was Trevor McDonald on the News At Ten muddling up the vowels on those two words. (I didn’t understand why my parents were laughing so hard...). The second time I came across Kent was visiting Chatham to meet a former boyfriend’s parents. The mother who was a 6ft prison guard had just had a boob job... I was 25 and my boyfriends mother had prouder boobs than me. This is not right. Neither was the illuminated neon pink flamingo and huge framed posters from Athena adorning every wall. (Including that one where the tennis player is scratching her bum). I admired the way she kept her sink clean. It was sparkling. I wondered if she had dry cleaned her kitchen cloths and scourers especially for my visit. Everything was spotless. I hankered to be that mum (albeit the fake chest) how do you keep a kitchen sink that sparkling? These are mum secrets. If one of my grannies had lived past me being seven, I would probably know the answers to these mum skills. They had a conservatory! I’d always wanted a conservatory. A conservatory says safe; safe time to relax in the sun without wasps. Paradise. My poor mother, a devout hippie... Sorry mother, I also like double glazing and gravel lawns... There I’ve said it. All I can say is: I’m sorry. I do still like The Beatles though and second hand clothes, don’t disown me! “The mother who was a The sparkling Kent matriarch later left her 6ft prison guard had just family for a truck driver, the dad went missing for had a boob job...” three days only to be found staying in Bluewater on a massive break-up shopping spree. I never got to find out how she kept her scrubbing brushes so new. They probably were just brand new, like her 38GGs... Third introduction to Kent was last weekend for a wedding. A night away from motherhood and a night in ‘Cooling’. Cooling is not cool, it’s a tiny village with a pub. We booked their twin room with ‘WC’ down the hall, for people who like to get fully dressed to go to the toilet in the middle of the night. With a key. You had to take a key with you! The taxi driver asked us if we wanted to go “off meter” realising he was trying it on, we went on meter, and saved a fiver. He was almost worth the extra fiver though as a tour guide, his Birmingham accent pointing at a field: “that’s where they filmed advert with that Gary Linekar for dem Golden Wonder cripps.” Then a few fields later. “Oh, actually it was that field.” Then pointing to yet another field: “dead woman was found in a suitcase there.” Ahh, the glorious garden of England; the Kent countryside. Got on the train missing the organic hula hoopers but wondering how I could build a conservatory onto my 3rd floor flat...

Building Opinions

The Landlady The Landlady has freehold ambitions

N

ow that Katy and I have decided to sell our Hastings flat, I have all kinds of wild plans of where to invest the money. One of my mad schemes is to buy a piece of land in Africa, the legal complexities of which seem to be fairly mind-boggling. As if English property law isn’t enough to be dealing with... We have now been trying to purchase the freehold of our Hastings property for five years. Completion was almost achieved five years ago, but one of the lessees pulled out at the last minute, leaving us back at square one. The fact that Katy and I are now planning to sell our flat means that the purchase of the freehold is even more pertinent, as our lease is approaching 70 years and either we’ll have to purchase the freehold, or renew the lease. Frankly, I’m not bothered which we do, as the cost and the result – for us at least – will be the same. I’m merely being kind and thinking of the other lessees and the future of the property. I thought that the main problem would be trying to get the other lessees to agree to the freehold purchase, but it transpires that they are the least of my problems, even though only one out of six of them ever replies to my emails. Over six weeks ago, I wrote to the freeholder asking for a current freehold price. Four weeks later, they wrote back blathering on about notifying their client, or words to that effect. I have just returned from Africa again and was pleased “Our lease is approaching to see a letter from our freeholder amongst 70 years and we’ll either the pile of letters on have to purchase the the hall table. Could I finally have a reply to my question? After all, freehold or renew the lease” it can’t be that hard to answer the question ‘how much is it?’ Or can it? It appears that they are either stupid, stalling, or both, because the envelope contained a two-lined letter asking me to ‘re-submit the prescribed notices’. What the hell is that supposed to mean? I am too embarrassed to phone them up and ask them and too mean to employ a solicitor to help me. I think I will have to ask the only other lessee who answers my emails, who is a policeman, so at least might be in possession of some legal knowledge. Meanwhile, Katy and I are still planning to go ahead and put our flat on the market at the beginning of April. By this time, we are banking on it being warm enough for any potential purchasers not to notice that the heating is fairly ineffectual and the boiler is over the hill. Do wish us luck. At least by then I might have got round to re-submitting the prescribed notices, if I ever work out what they are.

Robert Nemeth is giddy at Seven Dials

A

s the Small Batch Coffee empire stretches out across Brighton & Hove, I keep finding myself unable to write columns quickly enough. It was not long ago that two new outlets of this local enterprise opened on Wilbury Road and Jubilee Street in quick succession. A branch on the Seven Dials roundabout has just opened and an extension to the Goldstone Villas roastery is hot on its heels. The new Seven Dials outlet is situated in a building that was once home to Barclays Bank, but recently vacated by a bar. The building actually consists of what was originally a fairly standard Victorian end-of-terrace house and its large Edwardian ground floor extension of 1902. The extension features an open-topped pediment, fluted Ionic pilasters and egg-anddart ornamentation. The Black Spread Eagle of Barclays has been etched onto the glass of each of the two main entrance doors. The ground floor, “The extension features an basement and much of open-topped pediment, the exterior have been given a thorough makeover by my friend fluted Ionic pilasters and Paul Nicholson of Chalk egg-and-dart ornamentation” Architecture. A Corten steel worktop is perhaps the centre-piece of the airy main area. This is surrounded by a scattering of Chalk’s bespoke coffee shop range of solid oak stools, and custommade tables and counters. A new addition is a matching chair which, like the others, features the coffee shop’s logo. The walls are lined with lots of reclaimed oak and a number of ‘antique’ mirrors (which have been aged with old teabags). The oak has been deliberately charred black in places. Paul says that is an allusion to the way in which timber was once treated on barns around Sussex. I think that he just likes burning stuff. Regular readers know that I am a huge fan of the subterranean which explains why much of my visit was spent in the basement or, more precisely, the old vault. A long corridor in the basement leads to an incredibly thick steel door which guards a large room with thick concrete walls, floor and ceiling. In turn, this leads, via another thick door, into a smaller room where the cash was once kept by Barclays. Each has been given the Chalk treatment and will soon be used as training areas. I do happen to like the coffee here but, if I didn’t, I would certainly go for the architecture. robert@buildingopinions.com, www.buildingopinions.com

15 COCOON PROPERTY

Making a house your home Property expert Dominic Arnold on saving time, money and stress while moving home

“T

here’s been discussion in some of our recent articles about avoiding having to move home by maximising space in the property you live in: converting the loft, excavating the basement or having an eco-friendly office space installed in your garden. These measure will save you a fortune in moving costs and will ensure a few more years can be squeezed out of your house. But at some point, we all have to face it: moving house is the eventual inevitability. Selling a property is more straightforward than is often thought. You’ll need to do a few things to ensure maximum appeal. Number one priority: discard. There is stuff in your home you don’t need, haven’t used for years and will cost you money if you try to hold onto it. Rule of thumb: moving home should generate a cull of about 30 per cent of all the stuff you own. There will be things that are too small for the new pad; there will be stuff that won’t suit where you’re moving to; and there will be things that “Cull 30 per cent you haven’t picked up in years and, if they accompany you to of what you own the new place they will cost you money to move. If you can cull 30 before you move” per cent of what you own before the removal man quotes the price to shift your gear then it’ll save you 30 per cent of those costs. Does getting rid of the excess generate cost? Well, maybe. But if you plan ahead you can probably avoid that too by arranging a house contents’ sale. Some people like nothing more than poking around other people’s homes and snapping up bargains. My wife and I had a sale in our driveway years ago and we were astounded at what got bought: kids toys, broken sports equipment, old cutlery, snapped up. Admittedly, there were some things that didn’t fetch what I’d hoped for; 50p for an old Beatles CD I’d previously downloaded to my hard drive was a bit upsetting but that and a hundred other CDs made a load of space available for bigger speakers so, mission accomplished. Naturally, anything of real value will probably need to be sold separately. Auction houses are extremely approachable and helpful (Gorringes of Lewes, or Inmans of Hove). They do monthly auctions and welcome anyone with an interest in antiques. Remember to arrange a meeting to evaluate things in time so that the items you want to sell are removed from your home before even the first prospective buyers come over. Potential purchasers are able to see themselves living in your house if the space is cleared for them to do so. While there is an argument that selling your own lifestyle as part of the home can make a house more attractive there is no way you’ll be offered the best price if it’s filled with so much clutter that the buyer can’t imagine any of their own furniture in the property. Present the illusion of no storage problems by removing everything that overhangs on a shelf, or causes drawers or cabinet doors to not close properly. This will ensure your home seems spacious and will do wonders in enabling viewers to consider themselves owning your home. So... cull, discard, de-clutter and move on!”

LEGAL ADVICE

Surrogacy Catherine Taylor of Healys LLP on the legal issues surrounding surrogacy

W

e were recently approached by a client, asking for information in respect of a proposed surrogacy. An increasing number of same sex couples in the UK are choosing to have children via surrogate mothers and the legal issues can be complex. In Britain, although surrogacy is not illegal, surrogate mothers cannot be paid. Indeed, it is a criminal offence to pay a surrogate mother any more than reasonable expenses. It is also illegal for a surrogate mother to advertise, or for prospective parents to advertise for the fact that they are seeking a surrogate mother. For this reason, a number of British couples have travelled abroad in order to use a professional surrogacy agency. Why do couples choose surrogacy? Well, it is an option for gay fathers who wish to have a child

and do not wish to have the mother involved in the child’s life. In respect of heterosexual couples they only tend to resort to surrogacy where there are infertility issues and they have had, for example, a number of miscarriages, or the woman is born without a womb and is unable to produce eggs.

“The legal issues can be complex” There are two types of surrogacy, “straight surrogacy”, which is when the surrogate mother uses the intended father’s semen to become pregnant through artificial insemination, and “host surrogacy”, which is where IVF is used either with the eggs of the intended mother or with donor eggs, as the surrogate mother does not use her own eggs. For it to qualify as a surrogate pregnancy, the genetic material from one of the intended parents must be used to create the embryo and the Court may require DNA evidence of this.

The surrogate mother is the legal mother of the child they carry and they need to sign a Parental Order, after giving birth, transferring their intended right to either or both of the prospective parents. Unfortunately, often the intended parents must wait up to nine months after the surrogate mother has given birth before the Parental Order is finalised and they are named on the child’s Birth Certificate, although the original application for the Parental Order must be made to the Court within six months of the date of birth of the child. The child must be living with the applicants at the time of the application and indeed, at the time that the Parental Order is made. It is certainly advisable for a couple to seek legal advice prior to either signing the final surrogacy agreement, or applying to the Court for a Parental Order. There is an argument that surrogacy should be regulated in the UK and that, by being legalised, surrogacy would safeguard the welfare of the children, particularly in the period of time before a Parental Order is made. If you would like any further advice in respect of this issue please feel free to contact us on 01273 685888 or by email: Catherine Taylor: catherine.taylor@healys.com Kathryn Sawyer: kathryn.sawyer@healys.com

Home sweet home T

here are many reasons for us wanting to move house during our life time. Change of location is often tempting for those who fancy a move to the peaceful countryside or want to feel the excitement of a buzzing new city. Family can factor into your decision, whether you are thinking of starting one or welcoming another addition to your clan. You may not be that far forward in your relationship but keen to join assets and enjoy the company of each other in your brand new place together. Whatever reason you may have for moving home; with great eagerness comes great responsibility. Renting and buying come with their own individual sets of things to think about. Renting a new place can give you security, knowing that it is looked after and there is always someone on hand if anything goes wrong. Whereas you may like the wider choice of options owning your own home may give you. However many pros and cons you battle with, there are still plenty of professional people out there to help you with whatever you need once you have decided. If you are starting with the interior of the house, there are plenty of local plumbers and electricians who can help put your mind at ease about the initial layout of your building. They can also help you with any cosmetic improvements that might come to you when making it your own, like adding light sockets, attaching gorgeous light fittings or installing brand new fixtures. You may find you fancy enlisting the help of landscape gardeners or other skilled experts to jazz up the exterior of your property. From basic jobs to the little decorative things, there is always the best person for that job to be found when you need them. Words: Holly Cozens
