was reading the new Peter James novel, Not Dead Yet, and it made me realise just how lucky I have been. Lucky, of course, that I am not dead at the hands of one of his murderous characters; lucky that I am not, for the most part, held in the same disdain as his journalist Spinella too. Parts of the new book take his villain and his hero into the major dome of the Royal Pavilion. It’s a space that is now closed to visitors, but one that I was lucky enough to be taken to a few years ago. A spooky place, neglected but with an eerie history. The walls are covered in the names of hospitalised soldiers from the time when the Pavilion was seconded as a military hospital. Perhaps their ghosts walk the corridors late at night. This job certainly has its privileges, “A splendid idea to and I have been behind the scenes in fill the dark month” many places that the general public are not allowed to go. Including the dark recesses behind the opulent proscenium arch of the Theatre Royal Brighton. Now the Theatre Royal has come up with a splendid idea to fill the dark month when they do their annual updates and running repairs. There have been three events that take you, the public, backstage so far but there is still time to catch the final one. The theatre does have its own famous ghost, the Lady in Grey. By all accounts she is a placid creature, not a scary one, and some think that she may be the ghost of Sarah Bernhardt, the great French actress who appeared at the theatre back in 1894, but it is more likely that it is the ghost of the theatre’s most famous manager, Mrs Nye Chart, the legendary woman who ran the theatre from 1876 to 1892. There are other ghosts too, a man and two children, spooky stuff and all the more so when staged in the darkened theatre. Apparitions (Friday 17 and Saturday 18 August) promises to be this – an empty theatre, out of hours and after dark, full of dark shadows, unexpected noises, and fleeting glimpses of theatre ghosts – or is that just your imagination? umber 33a Brunswick Square is a whole hidden house, not a flat as the letter in its name suggests. It is situated in the north-west corner of the square, tucked out-of-view to the side of No. 33. I first saw No. 33a when my friend, the late Mike Robins, lived there. When I have written about it before, it has been in the context of both its unique position and also its sheer size. I’ve always been intrigued as to how such an incredible house, with a hidden front door but no front windows, could come into existence. A great pile of historic documents that were recently shown to me by resident Neale Thibaut offered some clues. When building a large square, in this case in the Regency style, a decision must be taken on how to treat the corner buildings (there is a similar conundrum “There was a school when it comes to ordering kitchen units). A diagonal façade serves in one or both of the No. 33 whilst a secret door within houses from the 1830s that building’s porch serves No. 33a behind. No. 33a was certainly not original to the square but I do until the 1890s” wonder whether it was built on or split from No. 33. There was certainly a school in one or both of the houses from the 1830s until the 1890s. The fee was 100 guineas per year (with an extra 6 guineas for laundry). The use had certainly changed by 1898, at which point a complaint was made about a hotel being in operation. Again, it is hard to tell if this applied to one or both. The strange thing is that the deeds suggest that the current No. 33 is smaller and a different shape, and that nothing existed on the spot where No. 33a currently sits. It is strange because street directories of the day give the names of No. 33a’s residents. John Bacon, a local property developer who bought No. 33a in 2004, remembers it well. He purchased it as four large flats that had each been divided into bedsits from the resident landlady who had owned the building since before the Second World War. After much restoration work, it ended up as seven selfcontained flats with three new quite special houses (61-65 Brunswick Street West) in the large garden behind. Despite Neale’s great efforts in reading the deeds and visiting Brighton Museum’s Local History Centre, we just have more unanswered questions – so our research continues. follow me on twitter

hen I came back from Cuba four weeks ago, the dishwasher was broken. I had left The Big Son in charge of the house (and, more importantly given him a rent reduction in order to do so) and he had promised that it would be immaculate when I returned from my holiday. On my return, I was less than delighted to discover a kitchen that could have featured in an episode of the programme following the grime police around Britain. There were piles of filthy dishes everywhere and a dishwasher full of even more filth plus about three inches of stagnant, stinking water. The Big Son was of course nowhere to be seen. Even before I went to bed after my 10-hour flight, I felt compelled to clear the kitchen surfaces of dirty dishes. I had not yet worked out that the dishwasher was completely broken, figuring the problem was more likely to be one of human error. Later, having switched said machine on to do a full cycle, during which it appeared to do nothing beyond making a terrible grinding noise and produce even more filthy water, I realised I would have to call out ‘the man’ to have a look at it. With a heavy heart and only two hours sleep, I emptied the dishwasher and hand washed all the dishes that had been sitting there for – looking at the clumps of flourishing bacteria – probably about a week. Still, The Big Son was nowhere to be found and the anger that I was hoping to direct at him was waning somewhat. A week later, ‘the man’ came out to look at the machine, claiming it would need a new pump. Whenever any piece of household machinery needs repairing at Landlady Towers, “I was a little alarmed, it is always totally normal for the requisite part to cost more yet not entirely surprised, than the machine itself and this is exactly what happened when he asked where with the dishwasher. At £250, the dishwasher was” the new pump would be only £30 cheaper than buying a brand new dishwasher. The dishwasher man declared the machine not worth fixing and took it away, leaving a sad gap in the kitchen units. I decided to buy a new dishwasher in the end and, after a month of washing up after three children and at least four lodgers, I have finally ordered it and hopefully, it will be arriving next week. The Big Son and I bumped into each other in the kitchen earlier this week and he was carrying piles of filthy crockery which, presumably he’d been storing in his room for the past month. I was a little alarmed, yet not entirely surprised, when he asked where the dishwasher was. Full marks for observation then. That’s the last time I give him a rent reduction to look after things when I go away...

here aren’t many places in our house I haven’t stood in since before becoming a dad but we are replacing the shelves in the alcove which were built a month before The Boy was born. The Boy, now almost eight, stood in the alcove while I unscrewed batons of two by one. I felt that I was in some sort of Alcove Pre-Parenthood Time Machine™. (I’m registering this one. It’s gold dust.) My pencil scribbles on each baton and choice of rawlplugs had a sense of history. Even if they merely said ‘this way up’ or were a red/yellow choice respectively, they hinted at an earlier, more innocent, time. I stared at my own handwriting waiting for a time-shift spark, just as, in museums, I become fascinated by a letter written by Charles I before his execution or a postcard home by a First World War soldier. Yes, my comparisons are facetious and I apologise now. My dad had helped me construct the shelving then, and he accompanied me “I felt that I was in to IKEA to bring back its replacement some sort of Alcove this time. He is the Go-To Man for that particular alcove. Perhaps, if it really is Pre-Parenthood an Alcove Pre-Parenthood Time Machine; when he steps into it, I don’t Time Machine” exist. This column might disappear in a puff of smoke. Where (and when) was I? Having been to IKEA – the air filled with the smell of anticipation and chipboard – I am later alone with the boxes which depict a man looking sad carrying the item I’ve just bought. I think of it as a warning. Then I notice a picture of two men looking a lot happier. This seems to be about friendship. It’s nice of IKEA to get in on the act of social cohesion. Oh, hang on, it needs two people. There were slight hiccups in its construction. Midway through the construction, I had to stop because of other emergencies, and Youngest™ and The Boy decided the exposed dowling could serve as pegs in a pretend shop. Bits snapped. Ironically, we therefore had to visit a real shop to get replacement dowling. Later – and I think this is why two fit, strong people are so happy on the side of the box – there was lifting to be done. My wife and I did manage this, eventually, and I feel we both deserve at least an honorary bronze in weightlifting. Once in place and fastened to the wall, the technical DIY phrase that kept coming to mind was: “That’s not going anywhere.” In any space or time. Which is good for safety, but I’m not sure it’s going to be my Alcove Time Machine after all.

finally made it to Arundel. The land of dreams! Well, mainly the land of castles, lidos and cream teas. We went for the castle but discovered 1957. It was like going happily back in time. There was a butchers, a bakers (and no candlestick makers) but loads of cake shops and most importantly a shop that sells teapots made in the shape of toilet cisterns. There was a pub closed till 5pm, a pub that didn’t take card payments, and a pub that only sells ready salted crisps... 1957 was awesome. It’s nice to think there are still places that aren’t open 24 hours, have their own butchers and the most addictive thing sold on its street corners is cream cakes. The castle is huge. Of course a castle is huge! What was I thinking...? It took hours to view, up steep hills and up thin staircases (that I’m sure some of the tourists could not fit up). I was knackered after the first mount from the ticket office to the castle gate. I don’t know how those 11th century types did it. I was tired just holding my five year old’s hand up a hill, never mind racing up pinging arrows at knights in turrets. I felt sick at one point and had to leave the five year old and my boyfriend to find a seat. They went up the Castle Keep to the flag and later found me sitting in a room of buffalo heads. Me on a bench with a line of elderly people. The elderly people looked at me like I hadn’t earned the seat. I almost pointed at my hair: “It’s the humidity! Look, my “I was knackered after frizzy hair is weighing me down!” I saw a young lad having to sit the first mount. Most of the seats had rope over them (so you wouldn’t sit in the old chairs), so anything not roped off I sat on it. The five year old loved the day trip. It was a surprise! When she asked where we were going on the train, we jokingly told her we going to visit a sewer. Well, that backfired as she didn't think this weird, after all, five year olds talk about poo constantly! So I’m not sure if going to see a castle rather than a sewer was better or worse. But number one summer day trip: done. Good parent points: 10. Next trip: sewer? Not on a hot day though...

When it comes to children’s bedrooms, from small babies to older teenagers, Latest Interiors shows you how to use space wisely


nyone with children can tell you that, from the minute they’re born, teeny tiny babies require an awful lot of stuff. And the amount of stuff grows disproportionately alongside the child – wooden trains, Puffles, Lego, Moshi Monsters – you might think that this improves when they reach teenage years, but no. And this proliferation of things needs space and a place to live so that Junior has room to play with whatever takes their fancy that day, or simply to be able to trot into bed (if only) without impaling their tiny feet on the edge of toys. What do kids need from a bedroom? This week, Latest Interiors takes a deep breath and ventures into the children’s room...

Go to sleep

Small babies, up until the ages of around one (or when they start walking, whichever comes first) don’t need very much in terms of accommodation. A peaceful space to sleep is the one essential – though this can be a cot or Moses basket in Mum and Dad’s room to begin with. Cots with adjustable mattress levels are useful as you keep the mattress high (for easy access) when baby is little, and move it down as they get older to prevent climbing out. If you want something that will last, then a cot bed – which converts to a junior bed later – might be the perfect solution. Look out for models with under-unit storage. A pre-walking infant’s storage needs will mostly be for feeding, clothing and nappy paraphernalia – as well as somewhere to keep the buggy (this can be where good understairs storage comes into its own). Other things to consider include a good, comfy chair (for those late-night feeds), and black-out curtains or blinds (well, you never know).

And storage. Again. Toy storage is absolutely essential – as soon as Junior starts moving around, bits of wood and plastic will invade every corner of your home. Start off with simple baskets and boxes if you like (toddlers love to unpack them), but as things progress a goodsized toy box can be a godsend. Modular, multi-level units with pull-out boxes are brilliant for putting it all away (don’t expect it to stay there).

Teenage bedrooms are the biggest challenge. As well as accommodating toys and treasures from early childhood (you may never get to throw that dog-eared teddy away...), the teenage bedroom needs clothes storage, grooming space (including a good-sized mirror), audio-visual storage, and then some. Teen rooms are all about the teen. Information technology is an essential component of teenage life – include desk space and take the need to house and manage any hardware into account (even if they use a laptop from their bed). Provide a comfortable sleeping area, thick curtains, plenty of wall-space and Blu-Tack. And, if you want to splash out, consider soundproofing. Well, don’t say we didn’t warn you...

From toddler to tweenager Rooms for older kids need a little bit more thought. Sleeping areas need to be quiet, comfortable, and relaxing – forget bedroom TVs, and think instead of making a space that’s practical, safe and clean, as well as appealing and personal to your child. Bunkstyle beds, with a lower storage, work or play area, are brilliant if space is tight. Central lights can be colourful, but don’t forget a night light (or a string of fairy lights) for those little souls that worry about the dark.

Consultation on collective redundancies The Government is in active consultation about reforming the laws on collective consultation. The main changes being proposed are: • Reduce the 90 day minimum period for collective consultation on redundancies which involve 20 (or more) employees to 30 or 45 days • Issue a new, non-statutory, Code of Practice which will address a number of key issues affecting consultations • Improve guidance for employers and employees on the support on offer from Government. The closing date for giving your view on the consultation is 19 Sept. Enterprise & Regulatory Reform Bill The Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill is currently being debated in the Commons and may be amended by MPs before it receives Royal Assent.

The Bill contains measures which could have a radical effect on employment tribunal process: • Prospective claimants to be obliged to contact the ACAS before they can commence employment tribunal proceedings • A new discretionary power for an employment tribunal to impose a financial penalty of between £1,000 and £5,000 on an employer who is found to have breached an individual’s rights to encourage compliance with employment obligations • Powers for the Secretary of State to lift the cap on the compensatory award for unfair dismissal claims (currently standing at £72,300 max) and multiply it by between 1–3 times depending on average pay and the description of the employer • Changing the wording in the Employment Rights Act 1996 so

Red Tape Challenge The Government has issued an update on their Red Tape Challenge. The key elements they have highlighted: • Consultation is in process on dismissal processes, on introducing compensated no fault dismissal for firms with fewer than 10 employees and on the effectiveness of the TUPE Regulations • Seeking views on reducing the 90 day consultation period for collective redundancies • Creating a universally portable CRB check that employers can view instantly online, from early 2013 • Merging the current body of National Minimum Wage regulations into a single set of consolidated regulation by March 2013.
