ooh, what a stench. I’ve just had my senses assaulted in the street by someone wearing the all pervading pachouli. My god, how it stinks. It made my eyes water and a lady with a dark hair problem on her upper lip had it instantly bleached away. Okay, I’m exaggerating as usual, but really, it didn’t half niff. I like to smell nice and my current favourite is Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. My friend Mr L wears something called French Lover but he pronounces it with a cod French accent worthy of Kenneth Williams and it comes out as French Liver. Not so nice an idea, whatever next? L’Escargot by Lanvin, Chanel No 5 – with side order of fried rice? My father favoured Old Spice when I was growing up but only because there was no alternative given that he was too sophisticated for Hai Karate. And the packaging is equally attractive, the bottles designed to look like the dual coloured therapy products that they sell. The perfumes have been made to exacting standards and with the highest levels of integrity and the results are a delight. Now I must go out and seek pachouli man and steer him to Aloka in East Street where he will find these magical new fragrances that could change his life, well the way he smells at least. follow me on twitter

Wedded bliss With all the excitement of their wedding this week I bet Prince William and brideto-be Kate, sorry, Katherine, have given little thought to the possiblilty of a holiday home here in Brighton, the seaside city so loved by great great great... grandpa George IV. We did originally think that a foothold in Buckingham Place had a certain ring to it but decided that it was an ‘A’ short of ideal. Not to worry though, here at Latest Homes we have spotted the perfect pied a terre for the happy couple: a cosy terrace close to the sea and the shops. The Landlady The Landlady on the chaos caused by clocks

J

ust lately, I’ve acquired a new boyfriend who is a very bad influence on me. Neither of us wears a watch and both of us refuse to go home until we’ve wrung the final drops of joy from the evening, which does not bode well if you are also trying to lead a fairly normal life. I have discovered that he is best avoided if I have to work the next day or do anything which requires the use of even half a brain cell. It is quite simple really. If I don’t start, then I don’t have to force myself to stop. My children seem to have inherited my inability to stop once they’ve started, apart from the youngest who is, as yet of course, an unknown quantity as far as this is concerned. On the weekend when the clocks went forward, I had to work for four days on the trot. I managed to execute this without too much difficulty by going to work and going straight to bed afterwards, without even thinking about going out. On the Sunday, I worked at The Supermarket from eight until three. As I was leaving work at 3pm, I saw The Big Son looking rather peaky, queuing at the checkouts, desperately clutching a pack of hash browns. He claimed that he was about to make breakfast at his girlfriend’s and that the meal would not be complete without hash browns. I tutted and in a kettle-calling-teapot-black kind of remark, claimed that it was an utterly ridiculous time to be having breakfast. When I got home, I had to prepare myself quickly to go out as a friend of mine – Mr PG – was cooking Sunday dinner for myself and The Small Daughter in return for my mending his toilet. In spite of my plumbing qualifications, I do not usually go round mending people’s toilets willynilly, but the promise of someone else cooking dinner for me is just about all I need to get my spanners primed and ready for action. I was “I wondered if both just about to leave Landlady Towers of my older children at 4pm, when I received a text from The Big Daughter – apparently still were so thrown by languishing in bed upstairs – asking how much she’d have to pay me in the clocks going order for me to make breakfast for her. I wondered if both of my older forward that they’d children were so thrown by the actually gone mad” clocks going forwards that they’d actually gone mad, but found the text so funny that I did make breakfast for The Big Daughter before going to mend the toilet. Unsurprisingly on the following Sunday – which was Mother’s Day – I didn’t see any of my offspring at all, although they did manage to take me out for dinner on the following Monday. This can only lead me to believe that my family must all be very forward in going backwards...

find urban gardens so much more special than their suburban and rural counterparts. What they lack in size, town centre gardens more than make up for in the way that they surprise and delight. Urban gardens have enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence in Brighton and Hove over the past few years and, for the time being at least, Brunswick Town stands out to me as the area making the greatest contribution locally. The City in Bloom competition, run by Brighton & Hove City Council, has certainly provided residents with the impetus to get together and make the best use of outside areas. Last year, Brunswick residents picked up prizes in a number of categories including Most Attractive Urban Area, which went to Farman Street. This year, City in “The various Bloom focuses on community efforts and the closing date for hanging baskets, entries is 30 June. In the past, I have visited the window boxes and Waterloo Street Community Garden pots are a real treat” which lies to the east of Brunswick Town and, of course, the garden of Brunswick Square in the centre. On this occasion, therefore, it made sense to focus on the Lansdowne area to the west. Lansdowne Square is a short cul-de-sac just off Lansdowne Place consisting of nine houses without front gardens. As a self-contained minicommunity, it lends itself well to community planting. I have no idea who, if anyone, co-ordinates efforts but the various hanging baskets, window boxes and pots are a real treat. Just around the corner on Lansdowne Place itself, the residents of two neighbouring townhouses have taken different approaches to creating wonderful front gardens. The first is a ‘cottage garden’ with a nucleus of shrubs interspersed with yellow wallflowers, artemisia, purple heather, forgetme-nots and white tulips. The second is equally striking but requires less maintenance. The Mediterranean-style garden includes a hydrangea, a lancewood, a laurel and bamboo. Last year, Brunswick residents got together as ‘Brunswick Town in Bloom’ to enter the South and South East in Bloom competition and won a Silver Gilt Prize in the Best Urban Area category. The group includes members of various residents’ associations including Friends of Adelaide and Palmeira Association, Friends of Brunswick Square and Terrace, Lansdowne Area Residents' Association, East Brunswick Residents' Association, Brunswick Street West/Dudley Mews Residents, and Brunswick Place Residents' Association. Many examples of fine urban gardens exist in Brunswick Town. I’m sure that the area will do bloomin’ great in the two competitions. In this high-spec eco renovation, the owner’s objective was to make his house more efficient and reduce his energy bills significantly. He also wanted more space via an extra room in the roof. However, to avoid planning restrictions, every modification had to be designed with space limitations in mind. After an in-depth consultation with ARCH-angels Architects, the owner agreed to a series of alterations, which included: • External wall insulation • Internal sheep’s wool and Warmcel insulation for ceilings and floors • New high-spec double glazed timber windows and doors • A green roof • Solar water heating, and • A wood burning stove Following this work, the owner’s energy usage for heating decreased by over 50%, which translated into an annual saving of £300 on gas alone. Also, the house now loses considerably less heat via the walls than its neighbours, as shown in the thermal image above. Thanks to all these changes, the house now achieves a high energy efficiency rating of B, having previously only managed E.
