Eubank boxes clever

L

ove him or hate him, the wonderful Christopher Livingstone Eubank certainly added character to our fabulous city. There were moments when we might have cursed the presence of his huge American truck blocking our tiny streets but somehow, without it, the city isn’t quite as mad as it once was. After being declared bankrupt in 2005 with tax debts of £1.3 million, Eubank paid it off only one year later. Sadly, however, that debt was the tip of the iceberg of the feisty fighter’s troubles and as well as losing his fortune he also lost his lovely wife, Karron, who moved herself and their four children out while he was at his friend Lennox Lewis's wedding in Jamaica. But what we should not forget is that the one-time Lord of the Manor of Brighton has always added an eccentric something to the city. Who could forget his attempt to buy the West Pier – and build a home at the end of it? And, given the tragedy it now is, who doesn’t regret he was denied permission to do that? Eubank was twice voted the Best Dressed Man in Britain and now designs a line of dapper togs for Saville Row bespoke tailors Cad & The Dandy that include clothing inspired by his ubiquitous jodhpurs and frock coats look. We suspect the monocle will never make a return but after £35,000 of dental surgery nor will that lisp. For a while Eubank lived in Brighton’s chic MyHotel in Jubilee Street and could often be found in its fashionable Merkaba, even though he does not drink. Despite being an easy scapegoat, we should not forget that Eubank beat Nigel Benn to take the WBC International Middleweight title in March 1990, and made two successful defences. He then won the WBO Super Middleweight title in 1991 after an ill-fated fight against Michael Watson, and defended the title 14 times before losing for the first time to Steve Collins in 1995. Oh yes, and for a year he wrote a column for Latest Magazines that was often as eccentric as he is himself.

I

urrah! Two days after the old tenant moved out of the upstairs flat in Hastings, my letting agent appears to have almost immediately let it to a new one. I received an email about the good news, with the agent adding a somewhat cautionary note that the prospective tenant seemed “a little young”. Having spent the past year and a half going to court to get rid of a psychotic, spliff-smoking pensioner, I have nothing against leaping to the other end of the scale in terms of age. As long as the new tenant doesn’t have a propensity for flooding the flat and a bag full of Eagles cassettes, I’m willing to give him a go. He’s from Tunbrige Wells, which sounds posh, and clearly hasn’t yet realised there is no gas central heating in the flat, which is a bonus. Meanwhile, back at Landlady Towers, The French Girl’s room is to be re-let to a 16-year-old drummer, who will be moving in two weeks before I go to Havana. We also have a couple of guests at Landlady Towers who didn’t ring the doorbell to get in. The first has been resident for at least six months and is a mouse. The creature is not a traditional-looking mouse and looks more like a field mouse. I suspected the rather violent cat downstairs had brought the mouse in and it managed to escape. It certainly looks pretty pleased with itself whenever I see it, which is probably due to the variety of cuisine available in The Big Son’s bedroom on the plethora of abandoned dinner plates and breakfast bowls in there. The Big Daughter who, because of the late hours she keeps is more familiar with the mouse than most, was angry a few days ago when she was in the living room with the mouse and it managed to scurry to the upstairs toilet before she did, and sat there waiting for her. The other unwanted guest, which I discovered on my bedroom curtain recently, was a cockroach big enough to merit its own name badge. After admiring its mere girth, The Small Daughter and I left it on the curtain and went to school. I hope none of my tenants are reading this...

introduced my recent column on 12 Richmond Terrace as the former residence of the owners of “one of Brighton’s best homes”. The home in question was the French Reformed Church, just off the seafront on Queensbury Mews between the Hilton Brighton Metropole and Regency Square. It was completed in 1887, three years before the Metropole. Haydn Hughes and his partner bought the building in May 2009. I’ve been aware of their meticulous renovation work on it for some time, but I only recently found out about the building’s time capsule. About a month ago, three crumbling Portland stone tablets lined the west side of the building, their inscriptions unclear. Chris “While listed status Pellett, of Albourne Stone, was responsible for their restoration, brings with it hassle, which involved carefully slicing off and replacing the first 3in of stone it is also something on the three tablets, each of which to be proud of” turned out to be 12in thick! The middle tablet encompassed the time capsule, which was unearthed during the works. It turned out to be a glass jar containing a number of items, including the congregation’s 1886 annual report, some headed notepaper, a publicity leaflet, a silver shilling from 1887 and a copy of the Sussex Daily News. Hughes replaced the time capsule in its rightful spot after adding a few new photographs for whoever next uncovers it. The stone tablets now clearly mention five individuals who played a part in the construction of the church, including Mrs E Hayes, who raised funds for the building work, and JG Gibbins, who was the architect. The French Reformed Church can trace its origins back to Deryck Carver, a French-speaking Flemish man who sought refuge in Brighton in 1548. He was burnt at the stake in 1555 for his Calvinist beliefs. The church was originally bordered by Mr Clark’s stable and Mr Mocatto’s stable, but it is now completely detached, with a whole block to itself. It is special for many other reasons, though, including its unique history, excellent condition and enviable location. English Heritage seems to share that view and is in the process of assessing the building for listing. Grade II status seems the most likely outcome. While listed status does bring with it hassle in the form of more forms to fill out, it also is something to be proud of. And proud of their work the owners of this fine structure should be. our daughter, (this is your 37-year-old single daughter), who is a mother of one, and talented and witty, (although women aren’t funny according to Jim Davidson but “I admire them for trying”) is asked out on a lunch date with a man, and even though she is still post break up, considers it, and asks if you would you mind babysitting, what would your very first reaction be? Would it be: “I’m so pleased that you’re beginning to move on, darling!” or would the very first words to leave your mouth be: “But what about me?!” That’s what my “This is the mum mum’s reaction was: “What about me?!” No, of course it wouldn’t be who booked the same your first reaction, because you’re holiday as me and not that self-centred, are you? You’re a mother, a grandmother, my then boyfriend” and you’d be excited for your poor daughter (who could do with some romantic/help/luck/miracle). You’d be crossing your fingers, sending her off on the date waving at the window, then happily unleashing the felt tips to draw dragons and monkeys for a few hours with the granddaughter, just glad to be spending quality time with the child, surely? Not my mother. My mother huffed and puffed and sulked. I tried to cancel but my date replied: “Why not bring your mum?” Yes, so that’s exactly what happened. We all went. My four year old, my mum and me. Is my life some sort of sitcom? If I weren’t living this ridiculous life, I would swear it was all made up! Who has to go on dates with their mum? Oh, me. This is the same mum who, earlier this year, booked the same holiday as me and my then boyfriend. Funnily enough, by the time the holiday came around, we had split up... I’m not saying it was the reason we spilt up, but going on holiday with his mother-in-law couldn’t have been the glamorous, romantic, sexy Ibiza holiday he’d looked forward to. We’d only been together months; what was she thinking?! After a few years, maybe its okay to holiday with your parents, but not after months... surely there’s some romantic holiday etiquette here? Where’s ‘The Modern Romance Handbook?’ There must be a chapter on the ‘30-something-single-mother versus the widow-grandmother in the universal battle of love and attention?’ Yes, there is! Chapter 14 – I knew it! Quote: “Mothers must allow their offspring to holiday with their new partners alone for at least the first year to allow correct bonding or a nest will not be made.” And chapter 21 clearly states: “Even grieving widows must help their daughters find their own mates/partners and do all that supports them in doing so. Definitely not inviting themselves along on dates etc. Grandmothers will reap the benefits in the long run.” There you go. All written clearly in the book I haven’t written yet. I can only thank my mother for giving me something to write about. Who wants a settled boring life with kids and a husband that loves you? Ahem!

his time last year, I met up with three university mates and we went up Kinder Scout. It’s turning into a regular thing and last weekend eight of us went for a 10-mile walk in the Peak District. Organised by JP, he pretty well got everything right – planning the route, booking accommodation that wasn’t a cold hard floor in a windy pitch-black barn, for instance – although I was allocated a double bed with a 40-year old Irishman. It wasn’t prejudice that I accepted the later offer of a rare bed to myself without any small children waking me up. I’ll return the favour next year. It was a weekend off from being a dad in all sorts of ways. The train trip was a pleasure: some sleep; a chance to read a novel; I completed this column, and I made headway on a radio play I’ve been writing. I also stared happily out the window and had a chance to read a newspaper without thinking I should be sterilising bottles or discussing Lego. Last year, I hadn’t pulled my weight in terms of snacks. This time round I packed breakfast bars, raisins, chocolate, and bananas, only to be immediately tempted by BH who produced some Millionaire’s Shortbread. DB, who recently climbed Mont Blanc, attempted to teach me how to use a compass. He was a patient teacher. DW showed me an intriguing thing called ‘geocaching’, a kind of sat nav treasure hunt. It explained why him and MP were scrabbling around rocks looking for Tupperware. It might sound nerdy, but I loved the concept and nerd is the new cool. That’s what I keep telling myself. It was a great weekend: exercise, scenery and catching up with mates, plus private jokes aplenty. I’ve tried to limit them here, except I will say the day ended with the sudden unexpected appearance of an omelette.

Begin at the top of the house and move downwards (or bedrooms first, in flats). Wrap items individually, but keep items and boxes from specific rooms together to save time later. Pack key items – important documents, cleaning products and equipments, kitchen essentials – so that you can find them quickly when you move. Make sure everyone moving has an ‘overnight’ bag for the first night, and pack a ‘first night’ box of essentials for breakfast, bedding and so on. Finally, load boxes with items you use least into your van or car first, saving the most important things for last – where you can reach them quickly.

But don’t panic: you might not be able to change the impact that estate agents, solicitors, vendors and buyers have on your life, however careful planning can help the move itself go smoothly. Planning Careful planning will make all the difference. If you’re moving yourself, hire the right size van – too small, and you’ll be making several trips. If you’re using a company, get at least three quotes, and book the successful company three to four weeks in advance of M-day. Many companies offer a range of services, and you can usually choose to have everything done for you, or pack it up yourself but leave the lifting and moving to the experts. Remember to make a list of your possessions, ensure the company you

use is a member of the British Association of Removers, and check their – and your – insurance details. Moving on Still worrying? Then make a list. Stick to the plan, and by the big day you’ll be packed, sorted and ready to go. Use our list as a starting point: Six weeks before the move: • Confirm the moving date (if you can) • Start investigating removal companies or van rentals • Sort through your stuff, and get rid of things you don’t need • Notify utility companies, landlords or leaseholders (if they don’t know already) Two-weeks before the move: • Arrange for your post to be re-directed • Change dentist and doctor registrations (if applicable) • Start packing non-essential items • Send out change of address cards • Notify your bank, insurance companies, DVLA, and any other organisation you deal with of your new address • Finalise details with the removal company • Arrange for children or pets to be looked after when you move and... • Cancel the milk To find homes professionals, turn to our services section starting on page 87

For the past decade we have created and sustained our magazines in an ever-changing marketplace. At the same time we have developed two popular internet presences, both thelatest.co.uk, which profiles our editorial content and acts as a valuable resource for the people of Brighton and Hove, and also our searchable property portal, latesthomes.co.uk, which currently lists more properties for sale and to let in the city than any other property website. Much of our success is down to the continued support we have been given by Brighton and Hove businesses and, in particular, the property market. Despite the impact of the recession the majority of agents still see Latest Homes as the place to advertise their properties. We have also spent a great deal of time joining initiatives as media partners and sponsors. These projects and similar, for which we can offer services and support to organisations in the city, have always been and always will be an essential part of what we do, working in a mutually beneficial way to develop and generate new business. Another arm of our company runs the Latest Musicbar in Manchester Street. Jeff Hemmings, long-time music editor here at Latest 7, is involved in running this popular venue. The Latest Musicbar (LMB) is a two-floor venue in the heart of Brighton, hosting top-quality music, cabaret and comedy as well as being the venue of choice for parties and celebrations of all kinds. As befitting its association with Latest 7 and Latest Homes, LMB has opened its doors to culturally significant events including Brighton Live, The Great Escape, Pride, Artists Open Houses and the forthcoming White Night Festival. LMB strives to form positive relationships with such events, offering reduced hire rates (sometimes free), free rehearsal space for musicians and theatre groups, and associated editorial support in Latest 7. Google has released developer tools for WebP, its new open-source image format. Google said files compressed with the new format would be as much as 39% smaller than those compressed in the current JPEG photo format, while maintaining the image quality. According to Google product manager Richard Rabbat, the open-source format is an attempt to cut the size of “lossy” compressed images, reducing file sizes and data traffic loads for networks with slower connection speeds such as mobile broadband platforms.

Rumour has it that Skype and Facebook are close to signing an integration deal. The partnership will include the integration of SMS, voice chat and Facebook Connect into Skype to make Facebook a central communications and messaging platform for its users. The rumour could be seen as another blow to those in the industry who thought Cisco may be getting ready to buy Skype.

Gmail unthreaded Gmail has been updated now allowing users the ability to switch between conversation view and the traditional message-based unthreaded view. Conversation view was, in my opinion, difficult to manage so the ability to have an unthreaded view is a blessing. When a user switches to unthreaded view, messages are no longer grouped together into a conversation, with each message shown as a separate entry in the inbox. The inbox is still sorted in reverse chronological order. Editions supported are Standard, Premier, Education, Partner Edition and Google Apps for Government.

Windows Phone 7 Microsoft has confirmed it will release its much-anticipated Windows Phone 7 operating system at launch events in London

and New York on October 11. Samsung is the latest vendor to confirm it will produce Windows Phone 7 handsets, with Dell and Asus expected to follow. One unit to watch will be HTC’s Mozart, which has a 3.7in 800 x 480px TFT display, giving it a screen size advantage over the iPhone 4 but only a fraction of Apple’s 640 x 960 resolution. The device will also be chunkier, measuring 119 x 60.5 x 11.9mm, with an 8mpx camera. Powered by a 1,300mAh battery, the HTC Mozart will have wireless connections, including 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and assisted GPS. Other news includes info that music service provider Spotify will release a version of its mobile software for Windows Mobile 6.x and Windows Phone 7 handsets. 

Internet crime Europe is increasingly popular as a source for cybercrime operations, according to a report from Trend Micro. During the first half of 2010, Europe surpassed both Asia and the Americas as the top region for producing web-based threats. The company said the rise came after China experienced increased pressure on internet service providers to curb illegal activities, forcing those responsible to Eastern Europe. The report also found a trend towards localisation in online attacks, with infections and phishing attacks tailored to target local banks.
