Festival producer & website director Cathy Smith

A Political Festival PETER TATCHELL

with

PETER TATCHELL’S POLITICAL ACTIVISM & HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLDWIDE GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT Directed by Bill Smith & Andrew Kay Towards the end of 2018 Peter Tatchell agreed to a long and in depth interview on camera. Using this frank footage and a wide range of archival film and stills from Peter’s own collection Tatchell Activist is an amazing and thorough look at the life of a man who has selflessly dedicated himself to campaigning, protest and activism, often at risk of his health, physical harm and prosecution. Whilst he has been seen mainly as a campaigner for LGBTQ+ rights his work has been far broader in its humanitarian aims, a fact often ignored or hidden by the media. This brand new documentary seeks to show the balance of this extraordinary man’s work and the impact of his tireless campaigning and dogged determination to create real equalities on a global scale, and it tells his own story in his own words.

WE ARE HONOURED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE SCREENING WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A LIVE Q&A WITH PETER TATCHELL The event will start with two short films directed by Alf Le Flohic:

Brighton Pride 94: a home movie

A couple of queer mates take a VHS camera to Brighton Pride for a laugh and capture the 500-strong march on its way from Hove peace statue to The Level. See Brighton Pride as you may never have seen it before, in some of the earliest known footage.

Let’s Talk About Sydney

Narrated by Val Miles, we meet her uncle Sydney (born in 1921 in Brixton) and hear about his life in the army, his boyfriend Nick and the Campaign for Homosexual Equality in London. Val discovered Sydney’s photograph collection after he died in Sussex and this film is made up almost entirely of those pictures.

OKLAHOMA! A

and Hammerstein musicals; I remember when I first heard the orchestra play The King and I in rehearsals, I just burst into tears because the sound of those songs are just so wonderful. I get it again when the first bars of Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’ begin. ‘I like that our director, Jeremy Sams, wants Aunt Eller to have some real chutzpah. She’s the respected head of this community and a lady you don’t mess with. ‘It was my birthday in the first week of rehearsals,’ Josie adds. ‘I turned 60, and to be playing Aunt Eller with all these very energetic, young, wonderful actors around me in this brilliant place, is a wonderful position to be in my career. I’m looking forward to it so much.’

ward-winning performer Josie Lawrence is making her debut at Chichester Festival Theatre in the spectacular summer musical, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! With its glorious score and spirit of exuberant optimism, it’s the American musical by which all others are judged. Among the unforgettable songs are Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top and the show-stopper Oklahoma. Handsome cowboy Curly McLain is head over spurs for local farm owner Laurey Williams. But lonely ranch-hand Jud Fry has his sinister sights set on her too.

“With its glorious score and spirit of exuberant optimism, it’s the American musical by which all others are judged” And Laurey’s not the only girl with cowboy problems. Ado Annie’s beau Will Parker is back from chasing steers in Kansas City, where he won the fifty dollars her father insists Will must have to marry her. But this irrepressible farm girl won’t be bought quite so easily. Luckily for this love-struck crew of spirited ranchers and bronco busters, wise Aunt Eller is riding ahead of the herd. Hailed for her comedy improvisations on TV’s Whose Line Is It Anyway? – as well as innumerable appearances on series such as EastEnders and Humans – Josie Lawrence is a dizzyingly versatile performer whose stage work ranges from Shakespeare to classic and contemporary dramas at the RSC, National Theatre and West End. But she had no hesitation about accepting the role of Aunt Eller in Oklahoma!. ‘Years ago I took over from Elaine Paige in The King and I at the Palladium’, she explains. ‘There’s something special about Rodgers

DODO PIZZA Dodo Pizza is the future of innovative takeaways

D

odo Pizza is an international brand that has chosen our beloved city of Brighton as the first site for its innovative store in the UK. Last year, Dodo Pizza made it onto Stagwegs’ list of 50 awesome pizza places in the UK. To Dodo’s this didn’t come as a surprise: unlike many other pizza joints, they only use fresh - never frozen - dough and always fresh ingredients. Dodo is a digital-first pizza company, this doesn’t mean that robots are making your food. It means that thanks to a webcam in the kitchen, you can watch the cooking process from home whilst you wait for your delivery, as well as using the tracking system. The webcam was introduced due to Dodo’s commitment to transparency, which helps the team maintain very high sanitation standards. Anybody can see their spotless kitchen and they are proud to show it off. The live stream is available right on their website, which is user friendly and accessible on your desktop or mobile - as you might expect from a digital-first brand. It’s the open kitchen trend coming right to your screen. So now you can check out your pizza being prepared without leaving the blankets. The system is online 24/7, there are no secrets between Dodo and their clients. Dodo first made it onto the international media scene in 2014 when it performed the world’s first commercial delivery by drone - quite an achievement for a brand born only in 2011. Now, Dodo is one of the fastest growing pizza chains in the world. It operates around 500

units in 12 countries in Eastern Europe, the US and even China and now is beginning its journey in Great Britain. Whether you’re on the go and want to pick up a slice or you’re having a night in with some comfort food, Dodo is definitely your joint. There is always a slice available for grab-andgo and you can be sure it’s fresh thanks to a countdown clock on the screen below. This countdown shows how many minutes have passed since the pizza was made. After 45 minutes, the slices on the counter are sold with a 50% discount. After 60 minutes they are written off and a new pizza takes their place. It's a quick snack that you are looking for? They have a good range of sides that are freshly made everyday. The Dodster, a huge success in other countries, was introduced a month ago and it's already a bestseller. It consists of a tortilla wrap with grilled chicken, fresh cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and a garlic Dodo sauce that - if you are really curious you can check it being made every morning before the store opens on the webcam. If you’re in Brighton and fancy some delicious food for a reasonable price then make sure you pop in to Dodo Pizza! easy tiger I had left our dinner for Kanthi to select and as ever he came up trumps. Poppadoms came with three great chutneys, a herb one, mango with mint and a lovely earthy beetroot one – all of which went down really well. As did the divinely light roti, a bread that is too seldom seen on menus. KFC, that’s K for Kerala, is a dish of crisp spicy chicken served with a dip ringing with lime pickle, a proper wow, and the spicy whitebait, one of the specials, had us fighting for the last little fishy. Punjabi samosa were robust crisp parcels of potato and pea, a hit of heat for sure but not aggressively so and balanced by a zingy tamarind sauce. Mr T knows that my favourite Indian treat is vada and these perfect lentil “donuts” came with a divine sambal packed with vegetables. Gobi Manchurian is crisp fried cauliflower tossed in a soy, ginger, garlic, green chilli and spring onion sauce, a sticky sweet treat to balance some of the heat. And Tellicherry Pepper Lamb Curry is a rich and spicy slow cooked lamb curry flavoured with a special blend of Telicherry pepper and aromatic spice mix and then balanced with coconut milk, with excellent

recent guest on my TV show Look Out! was chef Kanthi Thamma, an Indian chef with an exceptional pedigree that has seen him cook his delicious food on an international scale. After a period focusing on pop ups and the like he has found a new home in the pub once known as The Hampton now under the name Easy Tiger.

“Tellicherry Pepper Lamb Curry reminded us how beautiful British lamb can be when cooked this well.” rice and raita it reminded us all of how beautiful British lamb can be when cooked this well. If I had to choose one dish I simply couldn’t, and I would heartily recomend going in a group and ordering the lot to share, and there are more delights for me to return for next time. Easy Tiger is already proving popular so it is certainly worth booking. Easy Tiger @ The Hampton, 57 Upper North Street, BN1 3FH 01273 731347 easytigerbrighton.com Food Mon-Thu 5pm-9pm / Fri & Sat 12pm-9pm / Sun 12pm6pm

Now I am a big fan of his cooking, he knows his classics but he is also an inventive kitchen talent. So along with my friends Ms T and Mr L we went along for an early dinner. Let’s start with the pub, nicely appointed and certainly more pleasant than on a former visit, it boasts a great range of interesting ales and lagers and a good selection of spirits and wine too. The menu is not huge but includes weekly specials and plenty of seasonal dishes and it is not bound by the idea of eating three courses, it is far more geared to the idea of dipping in an out at your leisure and with very sensible prices choosing a few dishes with your beers could come in at almost the same price as a round of crisp and peanuts – better for you too.

jilliana’s salonista alert

stage A

nyone who hasn’t recognised or indeed embraced the fact that Brighton & Hove is the true home of the creative, the vibrant and yes the eccentric is clearly not living in Brighton & Hove. The city is, and has always been awash with the most exotic of creatures; the flamboyant and the outspoken have room to flourish here and no matter how much “austerity” successive governments throw at us the spirit lives and thrives here on the south coast. One such thriving force of nature is the extraordinary Jilliana RanicarBreese. Jilliana is a woman of “a certain age”. I don’t think she would be offended at being labelled as such, quite frankly she would not have been able to cram so much into her life were it not so. And cram it in she certainly has, from archivist of the exotic and erotic to world traveller, she now combines those travels with writing, video blogging and a regular radio presence with co-creative Susie Oddball on Brighton & Hove Community Radio. Jilliana has now created a regular spoken word salon in Hove and already has seven events tucked firmly into one of her brightly coloured belts. She has pulling power too, and has already hosted some extraordinary talents including local writer Aiden Bex amongst them. The next outing, an appropriate choice of word in this case, will be a special post Pride event at her regular venue Fudgies Bar and Bistro in Hove

“One such thriving force of nature is the extraordinary Jilliana Ranicair-Breese” Actually. It promises as always to be a fun evening of poetry, storytelling and monologue with Andrew Farr, the award-winning creator of ‘Piaf Live at Nimegue’ and Pauline Weir who has a lot to say! Joining the evening will also be Latest’s very own Andrew Kay, creative director, TV maker, journalist, novelist, food critic and playwrite, and he will be talking about coming out as well as his new play Morning Glory! which opens at the Edinburgh Fringe a week later. The evenings start at 8pm with a networking entr’acte from 9-9.30 and the evening ends at 10.45 with one of Jilliana’s own ‘Vignettes’. It promises to be a fun and no doubt
