CIRCO

T

he food scene is victim of fashion as is the rest of the world. Fads come and they go. One minute it’s this and then that – who remembers the day when you couldn’t read a menu without being offered moules or sharing plates. It would seem that the only thing that stays is pizza and burgers! Tapas and fusion food come and go but when the two collide it can be genius or disaster. At Circo it is quite clearly the former. Mr L and I went along post festival exploits for an early dinner. He’s the kind of friend who you can share dishes with and it’s that kind of food. Firstly we started with some wine and my word that all Spanish list holds some absolute gems.

themselves. The addition of slices of red chilli lifted the whole to another level. Seared mackerel came next, again finely prepared and cooked and served with salmonejo (a delicious, fresh Andalusian sauce of tomato, garlic, bread and olive oil) and blistered padron peppers. Prawns came next on skewers draped in savoury vermicelli, four succulent beasts that we fell on as if we had never eaten and then a mound of first class squid, crisp, salty and tender as can be. Each dish was delightfully presented but also generously presented, there was always enough for two, always enough sauce to share and go back to unlike so many modern plates where the dots of stuff are parsimonious to the point of irrelevance. We finished with sweet dumplings in a sticky sauce that put huge grins on our greedy faces. At the end I totted up what our dishes had cost and it rounded out, without the wine, at £25 each. In all honesty, the same dishes and quantities of food in a fashionable place could have been served as a tasting menu for £75 a head. Now that’s a delight and a bargain! Service is charming and the tiny three person team work like a well oiled machine in the tiny kitchen. 9 Preston Rd, Brighton BN1 4QE 01273 567832 circo-senorbuddha.co.uk

“The same dishes & quantities of food in a fashionable place could have been served as a tasting menu for £75 a head” The menu is short, some vegetable dishes, then fish and finally meat. We started with aubergine, slow braised with soy and beetroot. It was utterly delicious and generous too plenty to share without feeling shame at taking the last morsel. Our next choice was lamb, two beautifully cooked French trimmed cutlets on a mound of perfectly cooked herb rich Valencian rice. The meat was tender, the fat sweet and properly rendered and again enough to not have to argue over. Pork ribs next, slowly cooked in an intensely Asian flavoured stock to the point that all vestige of fat had disappeared and the bones almost got up and walked away by

Directed by Cal McCrystal, the comedy genius behind National Theatre’s ‘One Man Two Guvnors’, the production unites the original creative team and performers with new collaborators in this celebratory remount of their longest-running show, first created in 2001, and set in the heart of darkest Northumberlandshirehampton. Performing Cooped for the first time in the UK since 2013, Spymonkey fans and first-time audiences alike will enjoy the laugh-out-loud humour of Cooped, with new bits especially created for this anniversary tour, alongside some slightly older bits - Cooped notably contains

possibly the most hilariously badly positioned fig-leaves since Adam and Eve danced their first pas-de-deux! Based in Brighton, internationally-acclaimed Spymonkey are firm Brighton Festival favourites, so it is fitting that the tour opens at Pavilion Theatre, Worthing, as part of the festival in May, before heading off to Liverpool and Blackpool in June and then an extended off Broadway run [in Florida!] for autumn 2019. Programmed by Worthing Theatres in partnership with Brighton Festival, Cooped will be performed at the Pavilion Theatre, Worthing from Wednesday 22 May to Sunday 26 May 2019. Tickets for Spymonkey’s Cooped are priced from £12.50 - £25 and are available from the Worthing Theatres box office on 01903 206 206 and online at worthingtheatres.co.uk

f you have never seen Spymonkey then now is the moment as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cooped their longest running show. To mark their 20th Anniversary year, they are remounting their seminal production which made them an international comedy sensation from Just For Laughs Montreal to Sydney Opera House. Described as Hitchcock’s Rebecca meets The Pink Panther, Spymonkey’s deliciously demented take on the pulp gothic romance overflows with brilliant characters, rip-roaring farce and virtuoso physical comedy.
