andrew kay dines out BRIGHTON & HOVE FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL CLOSES ast year was a good year in many ways and it saw a lot of excellent cooking here in Brighton & Hove. But it was a sad year too for me as after 15 years of fun and games I was party to the closing down of the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival. Yes, it’s all over and here is why. The Festival has been at the very heart of the city’s growth as a leading global gastronomic destination for some years now. It started fifteen years ago as the brain child of chairman Roger Marlowe and the original intention was to promote the city as a quality destination for food lovers. It was a vision that has remained at the heart of everything that we have done. Year on year our events have drawn huge crowds and have been major contributors to the city’s economic growth. Our large format events, that we kept free, have drawn huge crowds of visitors and exhibitors, not only locals but from across the UK and often further afield. It soon became clear that the festival was not just about local restaurants, chefs and hotels but equally important it became about local producers and here in Sussex there have been so many who have joined with us in securing the county’s status as a food lovers’s destination, from fine wines, live stock, dairy and arable farming to the wide range of people who take those raw ingredients to produce fine foods. Our programme of international chef exchange events then took the very best of these things and introduced them to the world at large, from central

that the directors of the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival, after much thought and debate, have decided that our work is done. With larger organisations fuelled by major sponsors, now able to stage large scale food events across the country it has become logistically and financially difficult for us to compete effectively. In the last year we have

L

Europe and to Canada and the Caribbean. The result was international acclaim not just here in Brighton but on a global scale. We created events that were not only delicious but often educational and certainly entertaining –from the outrageous fun of Make Your Case to the revealing science of Super Tasters. And our special efforts to offer events for the young have always been both popular and successful. Our gastronomic vintage bus tours criss-crossed the county exploring the best on offer and our food markets brought the best to the city centre. Across the years we are also proud of the large sums of charitable money that we have been able to raise for a variety of causes, in particular Rockinghorse and Fareshare. We are proud of what we have been a part of, that growth of a passion for the county’s rich harvest of local and seasonal food and drink and local culinary talent. There is little doubt that the city can be proud of what has been achieved collectively. But times have changed, farmers markets and food festivals have sprung up everywhere, the major food stores boast displays of local produce and it’s hard to find a menu that does not claim to use “local sourced” produce. So much so

LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

scaled down and sadly cut our major public events. We have therefore decided that it is time to step down. We feel confident that the amazing network of excellent producers, chefs and restaurateurs that now exist are more than capable of continuing what we started and wish you all the very best as you continue to grow that reputation around the world.

JODIE! JODIE! JODIE!

Stars are not made, they are born & in the eyes of our theatre editor Andrew Kay none was born more starry than Jodie Prenger

J

odie Prenger – I’m a huge fan. he first came to my attention when she appeared on and won the BBC TV series I’d Do Anything, a Saturday night talent fest in which young actrresses vied for the enviable role of Nancy in a new West End production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! At first she came across as being something of an outsider, she was big and bold and spoke with a broad Lancashire accent – hardly the epitome of your usual West End triple threat. But she clearly had talent, a heart of gold and a huge voice. The public loved her and she sailed into the West End on a wave of praise, she was born to play Nancy. I met her soon after in a small office in Soho. The PR told me I had 20 minutes for my interview and after 18 minutes she came in and started miming that it was time for me to wind up. What she didn’t realise was that we had bonded and Jodie sent her packing, we were having a ball. The next time I met her was here in Brighton where I interviewed her with Todd Carty prior to them arriving for a touring production of Spamalot, The Monty Python Musical penned by Eric Idle. In the West End original the part of the Lady of the Lake had been played by Hannah Waddingham to huge acclaim, huge shoes to fill – but Prenger filled them and more with a full on belter of a performance. It was clear that she was a talent to be watched, but was it only in musical comedy that she could make her mark? Our next encounter was again here in Brighton and she agreed to

be my guest on my Latest TV series AK Soufflé. Once again we hit it off, it’s partly genetic, we’re both from Lancashire and the way we think and our senses of humour totally align. But this time she was here to play a far more serious role, the epically demanding one woman show Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine. It’s a bitter sweet comedy that demands a sensitivity to balance brash scally humour. Of course Jodie nailed it, making the role her own. Now she’s back in town and this time in another iconic piece of British theatre Abigail’s Party. Mike Leigh wrote it in 1977 for Hampstead Theatre and the BBC later filmed an abridged version for TV. It was an immense hit, packed with memorable one liners and performances that are so enmeshed with the play that it is hard to imaging anyone else in those roles. But if anyone can pull this off I believe that Jodie Prenger can. IN my most recent interview with her she talked freely about the pressure of undertaking a role made so famous by someone else. She also spoke of the intense rehearsal format, improvisational in part, not unlike the way Mike Leigh had originally created the work. This week you can see the play at Theatre Royal Brighton, but why not catch all of my interviews over the years with my favourote actress – the totally beautiful Jodie Prenger, my idea of a real star. 10 - 19 January, Theatre Royal Brighton, New Road atgtickets.com Watch my interviews on thelatest.co.uk

latest bill – ungagged! THE CHARGE OF THE RIGHT BRIGADE

Even our uniform is the wrong colour Theresa!

THE DEATH OF THE TORY PARTY

S

o in the reams written about Brexit, one thing has not been said until now. It is this. Brexit will inexorably lead to the death of the Conservative Party. The only question is whether it will be slow or quick. If we have no deal death will be fast. MPs like Dominic Grieve, Justine Greening, Ken Clarke, Sarah Wollaston, Anna Soubry, Nicky Morgan, Heidi Allen and dozens more will leave or cause such a split that the party will lose their majority. And note that these MPs are the younger element of the party. The government could totter on in office but not in power but it will be just a stay of execution. An early election might also just keep the party alive, like a badly injured accident victim on an oxygen machine. But the Conservative government will be over. But here’s the clincher. Every financial report on the effects of no deal say catastrophe for incomes. The government admit this but say to control our borders ( immigration they mean ) our laws and our money ( they don’t say very diminished money ) it is worth it. The public haven’t said yet what they think but history knows! Business organisations say we will as a country be cataclysmically worse off. Every family won’t just be poorer, they will see the worst drop in household income ever! So how will the public vote in those circumstances in an election a year or two down the line after no deal. Voting for the Conservative Party then will be like turkeys voting for Christmas! History knows. The public always have and always will vote on their own personal economic situation and would vote for anyone rather than the Conservative Party. Yes, literally anyone! They would vote for Atilla the Hun ( yes even though he might have a German name! ) No amount of criticism of the opposition - even if it were Corbyn - in the largely supportive press and broadcast media will work. The Conservative Party will get the blame forever for the most catastrophic decision in 21st century politics and the popular vote will never forgive them. And the party will be over. In every sense. So those Conservatives on the right clamouring for their ideal no deal ... more like 60 than 600 actually - are boldly leading their colleagues in their Conservative Party into the valley of death. The charge of the right brigade while all the world wondered at their madness. They ride their cause like religious martyrs, so valiantly and they do really think they will be retaking their glorious party to their greatest success but they fail to see that in the very moment of their triumph they have created their own demise. What was it that Yeats said. - “the best lack all conviction while the worst are full of passionate intensity.” Of course they will say that everyone else is wrong. Experts and their financial forecasts will be dismissed with the usual arrogance of people who are so certain they alone are right. The Conservative Party of old has had it. It is old and is on life support courtesy of the DUP. And sometimes old age brings wisdom but sometimes old age means angry and crotchety and mean and envious and out of touch

“ The Conservative Party is dead. Long live the Conservative Party ”

LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

with the new generation who will soon have the strength and power they had. Young people ( except of course the nationalist extremists ) largely want to spend time in Europe., whether visiting or studying or living there. Many see themselves as European as I do. They increasingly recognise that food is better from local sources. And Brighton is good, Brest pretty good, Berlin ok but Baltimore or Beijing not so good. All those clever things they use to freeze the food to travel here are not good and the young know that. The young also have a live and let live moral ethos. They largely don’t have a homophobic bone in their bodies. They don’t even notice colour, race, gender, it’s no big deal. The young are outgoing, modern, local and global whereas the old right of the Conservative Party are out of touch with the zeitgeist and getting more out of touch with every passing day. In one word “old.” Don’t worry I’m ok as in Julie Burchill’s memorable phrase “ In Brighton you’re either young or you’re dead .” But there is hope for the party as there are young people who still believe in those age old beliefs, love of family and entrepreneurial endeavour which has created much of the wealth of the UK and there are still many who prefer individualism to state control. You can see that in so many start ups. If it is to be saved the Conservative Party needs to do a few things. Ditch no deal. That as I’ve described will be the end of the party full stop. Ironic that Rees Mogg and Boris Johnson at the time of their greatest triumph will seal the death of their beloved party. I still think that Boris may see the light. He is more pragmatic than principled and it is his only hope to be the Churchill he aspires to be. The party will also need to appeal to the young. This will again only work if no deal is ditched. There are plenty of people out there who don’t want the centralised state promised by Corbyn and McDonnell. Frankly Conservatives need a defence of neo liberalism !!! But the policies needed to win the popular vote mean people have to be made richer and that could easily be achieved with an investment programme across the UK like Roosevelt’s New Deal. So the Conservative Party is dead. Long live the Conservative Party. Now is the time for the new king or queen to take over with as soft a Brexit as possible and a radical - yes radical - plan to increase the wealth of every single family in the UK. Now I know who in the Conservative Party can do this but do they! Death from the charge of the right brigade. Or glorious revival. Bill Smith aka Latest Bill 13

BOTTOMS UP!

Brighon’s naked cyclists went up in the air on the iconic i360 and all was captured by The Brighon and Hove Calendar’s Nick Swallow, here is his story Nick Swallow

HOW IT HAPPENED – WE REVEAL ALL! articipants in The Brighton Bike Ride were offered a free ride up the i360 in June and Nick Sayers (Naked Bike Organiser) was being served by Nigel Swallow (the calendar curator) in Waikikamookau as he organised the event from his laptop. Nigel asked Nick if he could pop along to take a shot of participants up the pod. The result went on the back side of this years calendar. That's event organiser Nick Sayers with the wry grin and silver cycle helmet on. Nigel Swallow says "the event was a lot of fun with great friendly vibes and plenty of smiles - obviously this is the calendar friendly version of the shots taken" but it clearly fits in with the calendar ethos; Creativity Diversity Community Nick Sayers said "I was thrilled that Brighton Naked Bike Ride participants were treated to a clothes-free flight in the city's iconic British Airways i360 in June, and we were proud to appear as the back side of the Brighton & Hove Calendar". Participant Yvo Luna said "The first time I went on the i360, it took my breath

away. The next time it took my clothes too. Yes, it’s that good. Though I’m a little apprehensive about what might happen next time"and Tristan Roddis said "One of the most fantastically surreal experiences of my life." Hannah Doherty added "I've never done a naked event before but I really enjoyed the flight and felt it promoted body positivity. The photos have given me a fresh look at my own body and have helped me to see myself as I actually am. My friends and I all felt better about ourselves afterwards." Brighton Naked Bike Ride Next event June 9th 2019 TBC The Naked Bike Ride’s mission is To celebrate cycling and the human body * To protest against oil dependency and car culture * To demonstrate the vulnerability of cyclists * To have an incredibly fun time!
