ollection days are not changing this Christmas, so please put out your recycling and refuse on your usual day. The council will be collecting on all weekdays over Christmas and New Year, including Monday 26 December, Tuesday 27 December and Monday 2 January.

If we miss you, leave your collection out and we’ll pick it up as soon as we can. Recycling Plastic bottles can go straight into your recycling box or bin, but remember to give them a quick rinse and remove any plastic tops or lids. Drinks cans, food tins and glass bottles and jars can also go in your recycling box or bin along with egg boxes, cardboard sleeves for food packaging and all tin biscuit boxes. Remember to keep your glass in a separate recycling box or bag so it doesn’t contaminate the other materials. Please only recycle wrapping paper foil or paper and cards covered in glitter can’t be recycled. Flatten any cardboard boxes and paper bags to make space in your recycling bins and boxes. You can also visit a community recycling point or one of the city's two recycling centres. he Brighton Centre is delighted to announce that Curve’s all new production of the hit musical comedy Sister Act, directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, will be appearing at the venue from Wednesday 11th to Saturday 14th January 2017 as part of the show’s UK tour. Starring Alexandra Burke and based on the smash hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith, Sister Act tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier (Burke), a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. Under protective custody she is hidden in the one place she won’t be found – a Convent! Disguised as a nun and under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Alexandra Burke originally rose to fame after winning the fifth series of The X Factor. Her debut number one single Hallelujah sold over one million copies in the UK, a first for a British female soloist. Burke’s first album, Overcome saw the release of her subsequent number one singles Bad Boys and Start Without You. In 2011 she embarked on her first solo tour and was invited by Beyoncé to support her I Am... Tour. Her second album, Heartbreak on Hold, was released in June 2012. She has since gone on to perform in the both the West End and UK tour of The Bodyguard before starting her role as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act. lex Michael will be raising the roof of Komedia with a comedy night to help support the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) life saving research and Raleigh International’s work with young people across local communities. The Christmas Comedy Cracker will take place on Tuesday 20th December and will see nine spectacular comedians including Live at the Apollo star, Simon Evans and stars of Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Craig Campbell and Sean Collins, come together for a standup comedy extravaganza.

“ The money raised will help the BHF fund even more life saving research ” The two charities were chosen by Alex, who has tirelessly fundraised for both organisations over the past few years. Alex is supporting the BHF as her family has a long history of heart disease. Her father, who appeared alongside her on the Channel 4 programme, has suffered from angina attacks and had a stent fitted to widen a narrowed artery in 2007. Her grandfather also sadly died of dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle which means it’s unable to pump blood around the body properly, in 1993 when Alex was just two years old. Alex has previously fundraised and volunteered for Raleigh International by completing an 11week project to improve access to safe water and sanitation in rural communities in India. Speaking ahead of the event, Alex said: “It’s been wonderful organising the Christmas Comedy Cracker and I’m really looking forward to seeing everything come together on the night. I’m so grateful to the comedians who are performing to help fill the Komedia with laughter! “The money raised will help the BHF fund even more life saving research into heart and circulatory disease and Raleigh International continue its vital work bringing communities together across the worl Christmas Comedy Cracker, Komedia, Tuesday 20 December, £10, www.komedia.co.uk/christmascomedycracker

erry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone – even the people who have narc’ed me off this year. It’s alright, we’ll start afresh. 2017 can be our clean page, a new slate, all of those things that mean ‘You better not do that again otherwise I’ll REALLY get you but you’re alright now’. But what else will 2017 hold? After the loss and upheaval of 2016, there seems to be an awful lot of people saying that 2017 had better be a heck of a lot better. I’ve said this kind of thing myself in the past, and then collapsed in a heap when the first thing went wrong in January. “Oh no!” I’d declare. “It’s not any different at all, and it’s all going to be crap, and that change in the last part of the date on my phone has made no difference whatsoever despite all of the expectation I put onto it! How can this have happened?” And then I’d eat chocolate and sulk.

“ There seems to be an awful lot of

people saying that 2017 had better be a heck of a lot better ” I think maybe I might try and avoid that this time around. I know it’s a bit late in the day for me to be realising this, but nothing changes unless you change it. I know – revolutionary! So if I want 2017 to be a kinder year, maybe I could try and be kinder in the world. Or at least not pay it forward when someone really gets on my wick by not being kind. It’s appalling the amount of cuts to vital services and benefits these ‘austerity measures’ have made. I’m not sure what I can do about it – except maybe write to my MP, volunteer at a local charity, see if my finances this year will let me give a regular donation to a national charity or movement trying to do the things I complain about not being done. I’ve never been one to embrace New Year’s Resolutions. I’m not quite sure how they work apart from giving you a date to mark how long you’ve given up smoking/drinking/Facebookstalking your ex when you want to show off. It is a good time to take stock though. Rather than rush into giving something bad up or taking something better up, hastily picked as midnight approaches so you don’t get left out – maybe wait until you have a clear head and work out what you want 2017 to be, and how you can make it that way. You never know, you might make all the difference. LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

@latestandrew

hat a year, I mean WHAT a year! It would be hard to remember within my three score years a time of such change, such monumentally challenging differences to the way so many of us live or would at least like to live. Who would have ever thought that the major power in the world would be led by Donald Trump or put another way, who would have believed that the American people would come out and vote him into power? As yet he is only President Elect but already the repercussions of this extraordinary election are being felt as he uses social media to launch his somewhat crackpot ideas into the world. And there lies another strange anomaly, he uses the worldwide web to launch this ideas and yet at the same time he announces that he wants to shut the internet down so that Isis cannot radicalise American youth. He's going to call his mate Bill Gates to turn the web off! Well that's going to happen isn't it? I think not given that Mr Gates probably earns most of his millions for the internet! Here in the UK we voted to leave Europe. Why? Well I think the majority, and that is what it was, voted for something that had been cloaked in misinformation. Far be it for me to say that we were told lies about the total implications of Brexit, but I suspect that we were never told the whole truth. And given the subsequent legal challenges to Brexit that have emerged I suspect that a lot of decision makers and policy posers were unaware too. What a mess, what a seething mess of stupidity. The year was also filled with sadness as so many much loved people passed away. It seemed to start with the shocking news that David Bowie had passed away, his illness kept as a tightly guarded secret from the world. From then on celebrities seem to have been passing away on an almost weekly basis, especially from the world of music. There are too many to list here and I would like to pose another argument for not listing them all. This is it. For every star that died in 2016 countless other people passed away. Not stars perhaps but in the context of their own lives equally loved and equally important to their friends and their families. There are also those people that didn't just die but were killed. Killed in wars, conflict, acts of terrorism, natural disasters and unnatural disasters too. Innocent lives and not so innocent lives. And children, unfulfilled lives, their potential swept away far too soon. Do we read or see all of these in the news. No, deaths of this kind are too often censored. Let's mourn them all.

“ What a mess ”

> AK looks back on a year of culinary highs

2016

has been an exciting year in the city's culinary life. I remember when I first moved to Brighton some 30 years ago. I lived here but worked in London and I confess that if I wanted to dine out I would do so in the capital. There were a few places worthy of attention back then, some of them still with us too and still doing a good job. But if you wanted excitement you had to travel. Not any more, in Brighton and Hove, and many places across the county, we have restaurants that are achieving great things and receiving accolades on not only a local and national basis but also internationally.

“ Some highlights of my culinary year ” There are plenty of awards around for food and drink. I am involved in some and respect many of the others too, but I thought I would use my column this week to highlight some of the culinary high points of my year – so here goes. Firstly, but in no particular order as they say on Strictly, Jeremy's At Borde Hill. I've known Jeremy since I was introduced to him by best selling author Peter James back in the day when I designed his book covers. Jeremy and head chef Jimmy create some of the most exciting food I have had the pleasure of eating in what has to be the most beautiful restaurant setting in Sussex. It's innovative food but grounded in classic techniques and, unlike so many places, it is served in appetitesatisfying portions. I like small plate dining, but too many places have adopted the portion sizes and applied them to classic dining. I want to eat and not to be teased! Small plates though are an amazing trend when you embrace the idea and have lots of them, and where better than the incredible 64 Degrees. Here Michael Bremner and his excellent team have created a style of cooking that has impressed not only the nation, with his appearance in Great British Menu but internationally as he is one of the stars in my own series International Chef Exchange LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

which you can now watch on Amazon Prime. Semone Bonner and his team are also great exponents of small plate dining at The Set. I recently ate there and had the most marvellous carrot dish, yes carrot, the vegetable that Fruit de Mer at The Jetty so often disappoints me. I also love the way Bonner tackles puddings, with a gleeful and childlike joy. Over in Hove, Market surfaced and created a style of dining that is a hybrid of small plate and tapas, but very British and very impressive. I liked it a lot and wish I lived closer so that I could enjoy it more. The same applies to Fourth and Church where fine wine is matched by fine deli style dining and the best gravadlax and pickles I have ever eaten, including the salmon that I ate in Scandinavia. Talking international cuisine Curry Leaf Cafe go from strength to strength and their new Kemp Town kitchen will open very soon. The same goes for award winning Chilli Pickle, a firm and constant favourite whether dining in or using their takeaway service. Best coffee this year I think goes to Brewed in Lewes Road, great drinks but also brilliant food, savoury cheese and leek muffins, pancakes with bacon and banana and first class smoked salmon, all very keenly priced and well worth a visit. In 2017 this rich firmament of culinary stars is added to by Master Chef the Professionals winner Stephen Edwards who will finally open Etch in Hove, and look out for my Latest TV documentary about him in the new year. Great British Menu star and Michelin starred chef Matt Gillan also opens his new restaurant Pike and Pine in the new year, a new concept for him and an exciting one too. I must not forget Isaac @ in the North Laine where young chef Isaac is creating some of the most exciting food around in his tiny but beautifully conceived restaurant. The same also for my old favourite Terre á Terre which I reviewed only last week and found as impressive as ever. Newcomer to watch is The Jetty at the Harbour Hotel already good and showing great promise. Brighton should almost definitely strengthen its role as the gastronomic capital of the south if not the UK with international travellers visiting the region simply to dine well. For now though, if you didn’t see it on Latest TV then catch my series International Chef Exchange on Amazon Prime and from me, seasoned greetings and a very happy new year! LATEST 7 | 11

STRICTLY REVEL HORWOOD I

n late November on a Saturday morning I have an appointment to call one of the busiest people in the world of entertainment and especially at that time of year. Most of us know him for one thing only and that is in his role as the toughest judge on the BBC's hugely successful celebrity competition Strictly Come Dancing, but Craig Revel Horwood is far bigger and far busier than just that. In a career that spans performing in West End musicals and choreographing shows he is now a much sought after director, not only in the UK but internationally where he not only tackles musical theatre but is also respected for his work in the field of opera. Behind the spiky comments and glances he is a consummate professional and a very busy one. My call finds him travelling to the BBC studios to record that week’s Strictly episode. I apologise for taking up his precious time but he immediately puts me at ease – "That's alright darling." Wasting no time I get immediately on to the subject of Sister Act which he has directed and comes to The Brighton Centre in the new year. "I'm very excited about it and in particular working with Alexandra Burke." She is clearly a very different kind of actor to the star of the film Whoopi Goldberg who whilst being very funny plays the character as a sort of grotesque caricature. "Whoopi was of course brilliant in the role but Alexandra brings

> There’s far more to Craig as Latest 7 found out

“ Alexandra is a very witty performer

with a great deal of comedic skill and talent, plus that amazing voice ” something very special to this, and it was originally written as a very beautiful female role." But can Alexandra bring to it the necessary comedy that certainly drives the story along. "Oh yes, she is a very witty performer with a great deal of comedic skill and talent, plus that amazing voice." This production follows a format that you have employed before, that of using actor musicians to play all of the roles and all of the music live on stage. "Yes I did that with my production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard which went into the West End and was very well

received. I have cast brilliant actors who are also brilliant musicians and dancers too when that is required." So we get nuns playing instruments, I love that, a nun in any show or film always puts a smile on my face! Craig laughs, in fact he laughs a lot, even though the telephone signal is weak and breaks up from time to time, but the impression I get is that he is a rather jolly guy and not at all like the waspish character that we see on our screens in Strictly. I ask him how he manages to cram so much work into his year, he is after all appearing over Christmas, not only on

our TVs but also in pantomime, this time as Captain Hook in Peter Pan at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley. I tell him that I saw his wicked queen in Crawley a few years ago and again he laughs. "I love doing pantomime and it is part of the way I divide my year. For three quarters of each year I work on my theatre and opera projects, on Strictly and the strictly tour and on pantomime, and the remaining 3 months I holiday." I return to Sister Act, but it's hard to focus because the man is so entertaining to chat to. I ask how well will the production sit in the large space of The Brighton Centre which has defeated some productions. "It will work brilliantly, it has been devised and directed to work in a huge variety of spaces, that's my job and the job of the production team that I work with." I don't doubt him for a minute and I suspect that I will leave the venue as excited as I did when I saw his brilliant Sunset Boulevard in the West End. Sister Act is a great live show, by no means a pale imitation of the film, and it is packed with great soulful music, comedy and spectacle. Alexandra Burke will no doubt deliver that music with real style, and I trust Mr Revel Horwood when he says she can deliver the comedy too. BRIGHTON LIGHTS WHAT TO DO IN THE CITY > MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT WITH JOE FULLER

1

Stream the thick, sludgy, enveloping, Black Sabbathaping Talisman from Boris’ ‘Pink’ album to get a taste for this gig. They’ll be performing the whole brilliant album in fact (I’m looking forward to the spacious opener Farewell myself) and it should be a thrilling rock concert. The Haunt, 20 December, 7pm

2

Martha sound like a janglier Neutral Milk Hotel with a poppunk edge to my ears, and a wintry early year concert often has a good comeoutofthe houseafteryourholiday’s atmosphere about it, so the portents look very good for this one. Generous support from Radiator Hospital, Onsind and Just Blankets round off a great bill. The Hope & Ruin, 6 January, 7.30pm

3

If panto isn’t your kind of thing then this alternative Aladdin could be for you. The Magic Lamp is a shadow play told using light, paper and oil, and using a Middle Eastern version of the text should put a unique visual and narrative spin on the tale. A bum friendly 50 minute running time is also welcome.

The Old Market, 28 Dec to 2 Jan

4

From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads (a solo show about a David Bowie obsessive) dissects the life of a pop fan with a head filled with sound and vision and features the voice of comedian Rob Newman. The show was recently updated so should be a poignant celebration of Bowie’s stunning oeuvre. The Old Market, 8 January

> COMEDY WITH VICTORIA NANGLE

5

The night before Christmas Eve, go nuts at this fantastic fundraiser for the Brighton Housing Trust. Sean McLoughlin’s Christmas Charity Comedy Spunktacular is jam and starpacked, with turns from Angela Barnes, Brian Gittins, Adam Hess, Colin Hoult, Phil Jerrod and Flange Krammer. Awesome. Caroline Of Brunswick, Fri 23 December, 7.45pm, £8 SOLD OUT

6

It’s the one to mark in your calendar. Comic Boom is here to tide you over between Christmas and New Year’s. Headlined by local comedy music maestro David Jordan, with handpicked up and coming comics supporting, this is always the best Christmas party to attend. Komedia, Thu 29 December, 8pm, £9/7

What do you mean you’ve still got pressies to buy? No stress. There are still a few days to pick up something truly unique – and support local artists at the same time. So take a look at glassinfusion.co.uk, and admire the glowing glass designs of Stephanie Else. She adds metals, foils and lustres to produce a stunning range of work.

Over in Arundel you’ve got until 24 December to view the Christmas Mixed Exhibition at Zimmer Stewart gallery. Including paintings, prints, ceramics, sculpture and hand woven tapestries – curated with love and flair by James Stewart in this bright and welcoming art space. www.artymagazines.com

THURSDAY 29

WEDNESDAY 28 Live At The Apollo BBC2, 10pm It’s a Christmas Special at the landmark comedy venue, with Crawley’s own son Romesh Ranganathan hosting the celebrations. Joining him is Brighton’s Seann Walsh – nice haircut, dude! – as well as Kerry Godliman and the surreal comedian Spencer Jones. Plenty more ho, ho ho’s here.

Jonathan Creek BBC1, 9pm Sometimes a place is just plain spooky. It doesn’t need to have stories of a 19th century sorcerer playing with the powers of Hell and telekinesis, the very idea of a 1970s schlock horror filmmaker taking up residence there is the cherry on the cake of scariness. But it all adds up to a fine JC case.

FRIDAY 30 Charlie Brooker’s 2016 Wipe BBC2, 9pm You may think this whole year has done nothing but lend itself to satire, but perhaps some perspective – with extra satire – can put it all into some kind of sensical order. Charlie Brooker, with some help from the ever-probing Philomena Cunk, turns his attention to all that has occurred in the last twelve months. Bless him.

8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown New Year Special Channel 4, 9pm It’s our favourite spelling and numbers games, where comedians are befuddled by maths and Joe Wilkinson shows genius in providing extra anarchy in an already pretty loose comedy zone. Join Jimmy, Sean, Jon and others.

QI BBC2, 10pm Sandi Toksvig hosts more slightly clever people being asked even cleverer questions in the hope that one of them will spark a claxon of obviousness, with lots of funnies as well as learning stuff. Ross Noble, Cariad Lloyd, David Baddiel and Alan Davies examine nature and nurture.
