with Victoria Nangle he concept of Spring cleaning, to my mind, has always been a bit of a myth. An excuse to only do some jobs on a seasonal basis – like cleaning the oven, dusting bookcases and moving furniture about in an effort to make the rooms look bigger than they did last time you moved the furniture about. We all live in spaces that are not quite big enough and deal with it in our own ways – this is my way. When the warm weather woke me up last week with a Spring in my step and a promise to daffodils that there won’t be any more frost, I found a strong inclination I rarely experience. One to buckle down and... well, scrub. The thing is, when a job is big enough it becomes less of a chore and more of an adventure to me, and this was a doozey. I don’t have damp but I do have condensation which has, over time, resulted in dark splotches (a technical term y’see) appearing on the walls in one of the rooms of my flat. I’ve consulted a cleaner friend of mine – by which I mine someone who cleans for a living, not someone who bathes more frequently than me – who told me to scrub it down with bleach. That was last September. It’s been annoying me since then. So last week I had a scrubbing adventure, and it even had its own outfit that made me look a bit like Hannibal Lecter. I have reclaimed a room from The Splotch! The windows are thrown open to air without fear of frostbite, and only a small paranoia that the seagull on the roof will think it’s a roosting spot opened up. People can come and stay! Just in time for Summer.

Hilarious Hebrew veryone knows that Brighton is a popular place for learners of English as a foreign language, with dozens of schools and language centres scattered all over the city. But only a few are aware that Brighton is also a source of a new, revolutionary method of teaching another language: Hebrew. A new book, Hilarious Hebrewthe Fun and Fast Way to Learn the Language, created by Brighton residents Yael Breuer and Eyal Shavit, is already making waves in the world of language teaching. The method in the book uses entertaining sentences, written in English and accompanied by humorous illustrations by Brighton illustrator Aubrey Smith, which enable people to learn new words quickly and painlessly while having fun. “We have even recruited people like Barack Obama, Ben Stiller, Mick Jagger and actor Tom Selleck to help us teach Hebrew, though they may not be aware of it”, says Yael Breuer. “The president of the United States may not realise that his car is so fast that it ‘goes like lightning’ (the Hebrew word for ‘lightning’ is

‘Barack’) and Tom Selleck may have been oblivious to his apparent partiality to eating beetroot (the Hebrew for ‘beetroot’ is ‘seleck’) but these sentences are entertaining memory aid that make the process of acquiring Hebrew words fast and fun.” Yael has taught Modern Hebrew to English speakers in Brighton and Hove for many years, and found this method very successful. “When I told Eyal about it a couple of years ago, we started making up more and more of these sentences just for our own entertainment, and when we realised that we had made up hundreds of them, we thought that it would be good to share the method, and the fun, with others, so we decided to create the book.” There are already fans of

Hilarious Hebrew. Brighton columnist Julie Burchill, who has been having Hebrew lessons with Yael in the last few years, gave the book a thumbs up: “Even a dummy like me, who has a Hebrew reading age of 4-5 after five years of trying, can make sense of these gorgeous foolproof lessons.” Eyal says: “We have had so many positive comments from a wide variety of people. We have even been asked a number of times if we would consider doing a similar book for other languages. “ Hilarious Hebrew website is www.hilarioushebrew.com The book is also on facebook, twitter and instagram Hilarious Hebrew is available from selected bookshops, on Amazon and through the website, at £7.99

ANDREW KAY IN THE DARK The advent of spring brings on an urge to grow tepping outside my front door the other day I was struck by the grim state of my plant pots. Last year I produced a fine display of sweet peas, hellebores and ferns, all of which seemed happy enough in the stairwell that leads to my semi-basement home. Years of working with estate agents have taught me that I could refer to my home as all manner of things, lower ground floor being amongst them, but the truth is, it is semi-basement, as the property is on a hill. This means that from one aspect I look out onto a pretty terraced garden and from the other a bright white wall. It serves me well as in a previous home the lovely and expansive gardens took up a huge amount of time, mowing, weeding, pruning, watering, sitting around with a G&T … Now I have pots that are far less demanding and in a way as satisfying. Pots, that right now need some love. I planned to give them some of that love over the Easter break but the arrival of a nephew and his partner, and the

S

pressure of Food Festival business put paid to that idea –well almost. I love the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival and the work I do for it and after a heavy night at our punk wine tasting event Make Your Case (there is another one in

Now I have pots that are far less demanding and in a way as satisfying May), a wander around the Sussex food market in New Road was about as much as I could take. There I happened upon Merryhill Mushrooms. I have in the past had mixed results trying to grow mushrooms at home. The first were in a huge box and I successfully managed to make my wardrobe, and all the clothes in it, smell musty and damp. There were no mushrooms either, sadly. The second I grew in a pack containing coffee grounds and were good but my lifestyle meant

that I rather neglected them and the crop was depleted by my inattention. Now I have two boxes of Merryhill spores that are already giving me a huge number of lovely fungi every day. The chestnut mushroom box was cropping after only three days and is continuing to give me plenty on a daily basis. The yellow oysters are blossoming well, like aliens right now, but not ready for cropping as yet. In a few days I will no doubt be cropping more mushrooms than a single man can sensibly consume on a daily basis. So it will be time to make dishes I can freeze, a passtime that I engage in on a regular basis as I seem to be incapable of cooking for one and always have left-overs. Most importantly of course is the quality of the mushroom. So with my first crop I gave them the best test and made a simple mushrooms on toast. Well I say

simple, but of course it was sour dough toast and careful cooking. The first thing I noticed was that the mushrooms took a lot longer to cook. Going from earth to pan in less than a minute meant that they had not dehydrated at all so to achieve that golden brown outer crust took a little longer and a higher heat. I used a 50/50 split of rape seed oil and good butter to cook them in and seasoned with sea salt flakes and ground white pepper, yes white! They were superb, meaty and plump, full of nutty flavour and with a great texture too. I am delighted and feel that at £12 for the two boxes they offer great value as well as fun. www.merryhill-mushrooms.co.uk

News and chat from Dr Caroline Oprandi on the frontline of science and technology at PACA new, cutting-edge technology to hit the headlines recently is the 3D printing of food. British start-up Choc Edge is already selling a 3D printer that can create chocolate printed patterns. NASA is funding an engineering firm to build a food printer that could be used by its astronauts. Surely by now, we must also have the necessary knowledge to produce a chocolate treat that is not only yummy but healthy too? NASA also carried out extensive research into hydroponics. Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants without soil. Instead, plant roots are suspended in an aggregate material (like sand or rockwool) and are fed by a liquid nutrient solution. Hydroponics offers an option for growing food without soil and with less water input than traditional farming. I’m all for embracing new food sources and whilst we are at it, studying Food Economics. Food Economics has shaped our society, going right back to the roots of human civilisation. Food Economics as an area of study, could potentially cover a huge array of topics ranging from: human nutrition and health, to production, globalisation, business economics, sales and marketing, consumer science and policy development. I believe that in order to tackle this complex issue fully new players need to be brought into the field, studying the area as a comprehensive package rather than taking the traditional piecemeal approach. It is an area of study where significant barriers need to be crossed between business, academia and policy development. Norwich is home to the Norwich Research Park that houses the Institute of Food Research and the Sainsbury’s Laboratory. Biotech startups are looking at ways to reinvent food, which is great, as long as these new technologies also take into consideration their impact on nature. On a beach, not far from Norwich, happens to also be home to this spectacular seal colony.

Brighton & Hove buses are the best way to experience the breathtaking heights and sites of Sussex. This week: Seven Sisters Country park ou may not realise it but there are all sorts of interesting and unusual places to visit on the Brighton & Hove bus network – stretching out to Eastbourne, the South Downs, and Steyning to name but a few. Seven Sisters Country Park, named after the spectacular chalk cliffs that border the English Channel, provides a combination of coastal views, river runs and lush grassland for a truly scenic nature experience. There’s no shortage of countryside to explore and vibrant wildlife to examine while you journey on forest and beach walks. Aside from the traditional village pubs, there are numerous family attractions and facilities, including camping and canoeing along the Cuckmere Haven Valley. The Seven Sisters Visitors’ Centre is a good start to finding out about the area. They can advise you of the best walks to suit your interests, ability and how much time to allow. And there’s also a marvellous café! Beachy Head is located in the park and is the name given to Britain’s highest chalk sea cliffs. Although it’s got quite the quaint name, Beachy Head has a fascinating and tumultuous history. From the unfortunate shipwrecks near the Belle Tout Lighthouse leading to its decommission in 1902 to the Battle of Beachy Head during the Nine Years’ War in 1690, the area is brimming with history to discover. Acting as the start of the eastern end of the South Downs Way – it’s even known as the ‘gateway’ to the South Downs National Park! The Beachy Head Countryside Centre is your one and only stop for all things Beachy Head, including a shop with gifts and guides. It also contains The Sussex Gallery, a showcase of the work of local artists. They’ve created The Downland Experience, a free exhibition focusing on the history of the Downlands and Beachy Head. Check out the www.beachyhead.org website for opening times of the centre and general information. Visit the www.sevensisters.org.uk for full information on this wonderful park.

tang. The side of green beans was good as was the garlic and chilli mash. I was very happy with my choice. David chose the Blazing Bird, barbecued chicken and thankfully went for a half chicken as it was huge, almost defeating him and depleting his need for the fries on the side. I am embarassed to say that he left the slaw untouched, so dainty is his palate. Owain was massively impressed by the number of choices on offer to him and finally went for the vegetarian Bahia Moqueca. This was the rich coconut dish that I had

he arrival of my 20 year old nephew and his partner put me off my guard. I had shopped till I dropped and filled the refrigerator with the sort of hearty food that I assumed all young people would enjoy, sausages and bacon, beef for a casserole and a chicken to roast on the Sunday. When I discovered that Owain was vegetarian the whole lot had to be relegated to the freezer for future use. Not even a fish eating veggie, I ask you! To be honest it was no great hardship as it was a busy weekend that included a lot of entertainment, the food festival New Road market and a fair amount of drinking to boot. On the Friday I decided that we would eat lunch out and having perused the market and had a cocktail, we headed down to Las Iguanas. I dined there when it first opened and enjoyed it, and last year I tried their branch in Kingston upon Thames. That was very good indeed and I enjoyed it when their chef joined me on the Kingston Food Festival Live Food Stage. He made a stonkingly good dish with lots of coconut milk. I thought that the buzzy vibe would suit the young ones and it certainly did. Having already had a drink and with a long concert to enjoy we all chose soft drinks and we took advantage of the deal on three tapas sized dishes to start with and share. I exercised my love for what I kindly refer to as dirty food, by which I mean deliciously messy and rather naughty. For some reason I love nachos, there is something exciting about the combination of crackers, cheese, avocado, salsa

T

The portion was more than generous, and it was deliciously sticky and vibrant and sour cream. These were particularly good, really nice corn chips to start with, way above average, and the right amount of toppings to make it tasty and satisfying. If anything it was a bit big, but I put on a brave face and made a good effort to polish it off. David chose duck wraps with a great dipping sauce. Now David has always been a picky eater so I was surprised by his less than conventional choice, but he loved it although he was reluctant to try the fruity sauce. I did, again the portion was more than generous, and it was deliciously sticky and vibrant. Owain, the veggie, chose a

mushroom dish which he loved and again despite the size of the portion he made a good stab at it, nearly finishing, but not wanting to peak too soon. On to a main course then and I was drawn to a new dish on the menu, cordero, or rack of lamb. It was very good indeed, the lamb, cut off the bone, was easy to eat with tender flesh and crisp skin. The rich sauce was dark and musky in stark and effective contrast to a vibrant salsa made of mandarin orange. That too had a dark almost marmalade edge but also had some chilli fire and a sweet citrus

experienced in Kingston, and it was huge and declared delicious. I love it when my vegetarian friends are offered choices that turn out to be a real delight, for one it stops them moaning that all they are offered is mushrooms or aubergine. Owain loved it but he too was unable to actually finish the dish off. Las Iguanas certainly offers great value when it comes to portion size. This of course has a down side to it as not one of us was able to even contemplate dessert, sad when you read the offer of a dulce de leche cheesecake which I may well have to pop back to try. Price too was impressive, great portions, two courses each and soft drinks, all from the full menu for under £20 a head. We could have eaten for less as there is a great lunch menu offer. Unpretentious, tasty and fun – we loved it! Las Iguanas7-8 Jubilee Street, Brighton, BN1 1GE 01273 573 550 iguanas.co.uk

FILM

WHAT MAKES A HORROR FLM?

T

he modern horror genre is fragmented into various subgenres: found footage, slasher, monster and haunted house to name just a few! But a film does not need to have literal zombies, ghosts and vampires in order to be a horror film. It does not even need to stick to the “horror film rules” that Jamie Kennedy’s character expounds upon in Scream. A film using merely terrors of the metaphorical kind, such as David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, can, whilst upending some of the more common elements of modern horror, actually be far scarier. Overlooking for a moment Scream’s rules (which it has an awful lot of fun breaking); horror is, much like comedy, a hugely subjective genre because it must touch at the heart of what an individual viewer finds scary. Further complicating the issue is that ‘horror’ often lives alongside ‘thriller’, which is built on mystery and suspense. A horror film’s story generally starts off as something similar to a thriller and then, as narrative logic departs, it is corrupted and becomes something else. Or rather: many things. Without the lucidity of narrative the subconscious must take over, creating the horrific and the fantastical. In one of the rare instances when Sigmund Freud wrote about aesthetics, in 1919’s The “Uncanny”, he analysed tales that “[aroused] dread and creeping horror” and explored the notion of “the uncanny,” which he defined as “that class of the terrifying which leads us back to something long known to us, once very familiar.” Reportedly, Stanley Kubrick used this essay whilst developing the screenplay for The Shining. Like all good horror films, The Shining takes ‘safe’ and ‘comfortable’ things, like fairy tales, baseballs, cartoons and parental love… and then weaponises them. Another notable film to do this is The Grudge, which removes the idea of a ‘safe space’ from the characters: there is an impossibility of finding shelter and a futility even to running. Characters in the film, and by extension the audience, find that as they retreat from the monsters - be that by pulling up the duvet or covering their eyes - the immediate confrontation with the horrific cannot be avoided… for it has been in the bed with you the whole time. A great horror film leaves you walking away from the cinema still feeling deeply unsettled. It has touched your subconscious, a place from which you too cannot hide. No ‘safe space’ exists because there is no ‘unsafe space’ to which the horrors belong. Any film that makes you feel that way is, to me a horror film. Want to quibble my inclusion of Mulholland Drive or have a lot to say about horror films? EAST IS EAST Ayub Khan Din’s classic cross-cultural family drama comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton ward winning Pauline McLynn will play Ella Khan in Ayub Khan Din’s critically acclaimed play East is East, which opens at Theatre Royal Brighton on June 11 before embarking on a 16 week National Tour. Pauline will be joined by some of the original cast from the West End production of East is East: Ashley Kumar (Tariq Khan), Darren Kuppan (Maneer Khan) and Sally Bankes (Auntie Annie). Pauline McLynn said “I am very excited to be part of this production. The play by Ayub Khan Din is sparkling, funny and tender and I'm delighted to be working with the brilliant Sam Yates. I cannot wait to get out there with it!” Pakistani chip shop owner George Khan - "Genghis" to his kids - is determined to give his children a strict Muslim upbringing against the unforgiving backdrop of 1970s Salford. Household tension reaches breaking point as their long-suffering English mother, Ella, gets caught in the cross fire - her loyalties divided between her marriage and the free will of her children. the clash of cultures between a multi-cultural family growing up in Salford, is a play that continues to resonate and provoke discussion. This long awaited revival of a modern comedy classic promises to be unmissable. Pauline McLynn is best known for screen roles including Mrs Doyle in Father Ted (for which she won a British Comedy Award), Libby Croker in Shameless and her current role playing Yvonne Cotton in EastEnders. Pauline’s stage credits include most recently The Knight of the Burning Pestle, at The Globe, Happy Days at Sheffield Crucible and Playboy of the Western World at the Donmar Warehouse. East is East, was Ayub Khan Din’s first play, following an initial career as an actor. It was staged at the Royal Court in 1997 and,

subsequently, Ayub adapted the play into a hugely successful feature film, starring Om Puri and Linda Bassett. For his screenplay, Ayub won a British Independent Film Award and a London Critics’ Circle Film Award, and was nominated for two BAFTAs for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Carl Foreman Award for Most Promising Newcomer, and a European Film Award for Best Screenwriter. Ayub was last seen on stage in the West End/National tour run of East is East at Trafalgar Studios as part of the Trafalgar Transformed season, playing for the first time, the role of George. Other stage credits include the title role of Bunty Berman Presents, under the wing of The New Group at the Acorn Theatre, Off-Broadway. The musical was co-authored by Ayub and Grammy

CLASS ACT Freedom of speech at the forefront of comedy

any years ago (about eight and a bit years ago if you’re being pedantic) I was writing up a review of a new act night I’d been most impressed with and, like a diligent reviewer, called up the promoter when I couldn’t find the names of the acts listed anywhere online. Credit where credit’s due, I always say. Anyway, the promoter and I got chatting, and it turned out that this particularly impressive collection of new faces to the live comedy scene had all completed the Jill Edwards Comedy Workshop, and that the promoter was – in fact – Jill Edwards. That line-up included Toby Whithouse, who went on to be a finalist in the highly respected So You Think You’re Funny competition – as well as continuing with his day job of being a writer for Doctor Who, Torchwood, creator and writer of Being Human, and he’s got a new series coming out in the next few weeks called The Game for BBC2. And this showcase was one of the earliest ever outings of a certain Mr Paul McCaffrey, now to be found all over BBC3. Jill Edwards asked, might I be interested in doing the course myself? I was. I spent my Saturday afternoons learning at Komedia for a few months with about 20 others, after which we all had our very first three minute sets. We auditioned to a panel of judges – and I got through! Someone else who got through from my class was Seann Walsh. He closed the showcase gig beautifully. It was his second time on stage. This Saturday I will be back at Komedia again, but this time as a judge for a whole new array of nervous new comedians, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Seann and Paul, as well as other Jill Edwards alumni such as Jimmy Carr, Shazia Mirza, Romesh Ranganathan, Angela Barnes, Shappi Khorsandi, Simon Evans and others. It’s one of my favourite things to do all year, to go and see the new class coming up. Those of you who regularly go to see new act shows will know that certain subjects and topics can fall into vogue with newbies – whether it’s The Budget or Kim Kardashian’s hair. The beauty with this lot is that all of it has come straight from their noggins with none of that crosscontamination of material, meaning that this truly is original and fresh skewed perspectives on the world that I have never heard before. And I love it. The only downside is having to pick who goes through and who can’t quite make it this time. A week and a half later everyone else gets the chance to see them debut at Komedia in their own New Act Night. A gem. And hosted by the incredible Angela Barnes. It’s not unusual to find tickets have sold out before the day arrives, so book now, and see the real stars of the future. Jeff Hemmings delves deeper with PSB and their new album

ormed only six years ago, mssrs J Willgoose Esq and Wrigglesworth have just released their second album, The Race For Space, the follow up to their brilliant debut Inform-Educate-Entertain. While their debut album artfully juxtaposed British and American propaganda and public safety film and audio of the 30s-70s, The Race For Space employs a mix of the propagandist and 'live' audio captured in the control room of Houston, as it attempts to trace this historic 'race', conducted at the height of the Cold War, between the arch enemies of the USA and USSR. PSB have once again achieved what they explicitly implied via the title of their first album; to inform, to educate, and to entertain. And with the pleasant rock, pop, ambient and electronic beats, PSB are first and foremost about entertaining, as their live shows testify, gigs that have that crucial extra ingredient of being visual. “When we put the live show together we wanted to make it as live as possible, so even though there are only two of us, I play guitar and banjo, there’s keyboard work and sample triggering,

In a way the footage becomes the frontman and we play the music around it." Beginning with rallying words of President Kennedy from a speech in 1962, The Race For Space covers the period between 1957 and 1972, bookended by the launch of the first space satellite (Sputnik 1) and the last moon mission (Apollo 17), largely, but not exclusively, in strict chronological order. BRIGHTON’S ARTY Alison Krog

WHAT LIES BENEATH hree cat toys, an earring, two lip balms and a scattering of peanut M&Ms. The elements of a groundbreaking new piece of mixed media? No. What I found underneath our sofa the last time we did Artists Open Houses. Because it’s that time of year again – when the city’s creative community is in a frantic frenzy of painting, framing, and shifting furniture as they get ready to accommodate those art-loving visitors (and, let’s face it, nosy neighbours) who will be trailing around the city for four weekends in May. So assuming that no one in their right mind would leave Brighton during Festival month, this week’s column is dedicated to some outof-town shows that you might want to catch before the May madness begins. Based on the idea that all women are related to Eve, Seaford artist David Taylor explores her different forms at the Hop Gallery, Lewes, in his new exhibition ‘The Family of Eve’. The artist is particularly fascinated by Cranach’s painting of Adam & Eve, and – influenced by the work of musicians and other artists – David captures the spirit and attributes of people within his portraits rather than attempting to recreate photographic images. Until 7 May. Closed Mondays I know I’ve mentioned it before, but if you’ve got the chance to see David Armitage’s ‘A Decade of Colour’ you won’t be disappointed. It’s proving to be one of the most popular art exhibitions ever seen in Eastbourne – the chance to immerse yourself in big, bold, colourful canvases that have a genuinely joyful quality. At the Birley Centre until 26 April. Over in Bromley, another colourful character – and Arty favourite – Vincent Donlin – is wrapping up his ‘Brighton and Beyond’ show at the Ripley Arts Centre. There are still a few days to enjoy the wonderful way Vince captures scenes from the city he’s been living in for the past 15 years. Layers of meaning evolve from his technique of acrylic under-painting, upon which each picture is built up using linseed oil glazes then finally oil paint. Until 24 April. www.artymagazines.com

OPEN SEASON May sees the start of Brighton’s famous Artists Open Houses a chance to see what the best of the city’s artists and makers have to offer in their own homes and studios Bernard Lodge: Toyopolis

Drawing Circus, Fugitive Ink, 7 Dials trail

Ravenswood, Beyond The Level trail

Encounters, West Hove trail

t’s that time of year, once again, when literally hundreds of artists and makers in Brighton, Hove and the surrounding area, throw open their doors, welcoming you into their homes and studios. For the first four weekends in May, you are invited to view everything from sculpture and painting to jewellery, ceramics and textiles and offered the opportunity to buy work and chat directly with the creators. The Open Houses are grouped into one of 12 trails around different areas of the city and beyond, each with its own unique character and atmosphere - from the fishermen’s houses of Hanover to the urban warehouse spaces of the North Laine and cottages of the South Downs village of Ditchling. As trails are geographically grouped, with houses generally within easy walking distance of each other, it's a great way to spend a weekend afternoon, following a trail, where entry to all venues is free and many Open Houses also offer homemade tea and cake! This year there are several not-to-be-missed highlights, starting with an exhibition of work from this year’s brochure cover artist, Bernard Lodge. Best known for his work designing the first five title sequences for Dr Who, Bernard then went on to work on special effects for Ridley Scott’s Alien and Bladerunner, one of the first people to work on designing computer effects. Since then he has moved to more traditional art forms and now creates

bright and bold woodcuts from his studio in the downs just outside Brighton. This May Bernard will be exhibiting some of his woodcut prints, along with award-winning 2014 AOH Artist of the Year, photographer Tony Bowen, at The Old Market in Hove. (More of Bernard Lodge’s work can be seen at Salon Des Sources in the Seven Dials trail). Also be sure not to miss The Drawing Circus, offering the Tony Bowen: Whitechapel opportunity to all Open House visitors Call to Worship 2 to pick up a pencil and explore their creativity! Throughout the festival you can visit the Drawing Circus, housed in a domestic setting at Open House Fugitive Ink, in the Seven Dials trail, where you can draw or be drawn by your friends and other artists. For one day only, on the 9th May, the Drawing Circus will take over the entire open house and Drawing Circus costumed models will be posed in every room, to be drawn in a variety of domestic circus-sets. Taking part is open to every-one, of all ages and abilities, and all drawing materials will be supplied for you free of charge Don't miss the many wonderful schools, student and community groups taking part in this year’s Artists Open Houses festival; including Varndean and Balfour Schools, Grace Eyre at Montefiore Road and Outside In artists exhibiting their work at Brighton Health and Wellbeing in Brunswick Town. And finally don't forget the ever-popular Best Open House Award, sponsored by The Latest, which offers you the opportunity to vote online for your favourite Open House!. From the start of the festival, you can simply visit the AOH website: www.aoh.org.uk, follow the links and place a vote for your favourite house - the one that you believe best captures the spirit of the Artists Open Houses. The Artists Open Houses May 2015 Festival runs weekends 2nd-24th May. For full details on all Open Houses venues visit: www.aoh.org.uk, You can pick up an AOH brochure throughout the festival at Brighton and Hove train stations, libraries and museums, and look out for the Festivals of Brighton pop-up booth at Brighton station (near the Doddle office). AOH brochures are also available at all Open House venues from the start of the festival.

What a joy to see a musical that truly deserves the term musical, and not yet another juke-box confection of pop hits strung around a tenuous story. The Producers is perhaps Mel Brooks' masterpiece, the original film a classic side-splitting comedy, and Brooks' own musical adaptation is a stroke of genius. Genius realised in this production by a stellar cast. Louie Spence is hysterical, Phill Jupitus scarily real and David Bedella on brilliant form with that killer smile. Cory English has to fill some difficult shoes but does it with aplomb, making Max Bialystock his own and nailing his big numbers. But it is Jason Manford who steals the show with an extraordinary performance that takes him from stand-up comedian to musical star. His portrayal of Leo Bloom is touchingly gentle and naive, his comic timing is superb – but when he opens his mouth to sing he reveals that he has one hell of a vocal capacity and vocal skill, simply breathtaking. This is a masterpiece of a show – a show with real heart. Unmissable!

Simple Minds This was a show of two halves with the first comprised of a heavyweight selection from their earlier period with highlights being the throbbing, still fresh, club classics 'I Travel' and 'Love Song' and an acoustic 'The American' standing strong alongside the stadium favourites from their mid 80s heyday, that ended with a bombastic 'Don't

You Forget About Me'. Jim Kerr was resplendent in a tartan jacket, and in fine voice, and the guest female vocalists, especially Sarah Brown, both performed superbly. Unfortunately the second set lacked the pace of the first but was saved by a big crowd-pleasing finish.

Banff Film Festival The festival consisted of eight visually stunning films with a mountain theme, targeting adventure-loving, outward-bound, Bear Grylls wannabees. This could have been a massive guilt trip for us couch potatoes, as most of the films lionised high-five’ing adrenaline junkies narrowly cheating death; being the first to ascend (or hurtle from) a peak makes them feel like gods.
