14 SNAP SHOTS

Snap Shots Photographer Diana Frangi captures the faces and places that define our city. This week: award-winning author David Alderton

My message in this book is that we need to be able to relate to animals and recognise them as individuals. With companion animals especially, it is not just death that can lead to grief, but separation too. Grief can affect an individual’s behaviour so that it reacts in a different way than would normally be anticipated. It can reinforce survival instincts, binding groups together in the face of adversity.

Brighton based award-winning author David Alderton is pictured here visiting the pet cemetary in Preston Manor. David’s books about pets and wildlife have sold over 6 million copies in 30 languages. His new book, Animal Grief (How Animals Mourn), looks at the extent to which animals can experience grief, a fascinating insight into animal behaviour. David, who originally trained as a veterinary surgeon, has also launched the world’s first interactive cat ebook, The Interactive A-Z Guide to Famous Cats. www.petinfoclub.com www.davidalderton.com

CHRISTINE BLEAKLEY – THE WORK OUT

A brand new face to fitness, in her first ever fitness DVD. Christine has always been active, well-known as a keen runner, waltzing her way across the dance floor in Strictly Come Dancing and facing sub-zero temperatures in aid of Sport Relief where she water-skied across the English Channel. Much of Christine’s inspiration was her sister Nicola who, after reaching a UK size 24 at 18 years-old, lost an incredible seven stone and maintained her new current weight through regular exercise. Christine wanted to create a versatile programme for women that could help them keep the weight off with exercises that offer something new and challenging, as well as pushing the most regular gym-goer. She approached personal trainer Maria Fenn to come up with the perfect workout and her sister Nicola to share her personal experiences on

weight loss and fitness, as well as join her on set to demonstrate routines. The DVD is designed to build up your fitness level, sculpt your body and help you lose weight by using techniques such as plyometrics and interval training, two incredibly effective ways to work out and deliver quick results. One section focusses on legs, bum, arms and core muscles, and the second on hardcore routines – do the whole DVD or just dip in and create your own programme. Q Who is Christine’s on-sceeen presenting partner?
