latest SEAGULLS Up the Albion! Mark Brailsford looks at three important games

S

ince Tony Mowbray took over at The Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough have righted themselves after a disastrous spell under the management of Gordon Strachan. Mowbray has shipped out a lot of the high earning and under achieving players and blended young hungry players, some from the Teesside area, into the team. Along with Mowbray’s adherence to the principles of playing attacking football, the people of Teesside are enjoying watching their team again. The fact that Mowbray hails from the area has led to a formidable bond between club and fan, which is reflected in their solid start to the season. The north east is never an easy place to play at the best of times, but on a freezing December afternoon, expect a very tough game from which a point would be very satisfying. At the time of writing, ‘Boro’s home record is three wins and six draws, which is not great form and hints at a lack of firepower up front. If Albion’s defence holds firm and with El Abd back in the squad the defence is looking very well stocked, then a result at The Riverside is quite likely. I’d put a penny on a draw but if you’re going, wrap up warm!

The number one party venue in Europe’s sexiest city – BRIGHTON!

Albion Vs Nottingham Forest

Derby: result! While on the subject of Mr Clough, last Tuesday Albion played a Derby County team managed by Clough junior who has taken to management like a duck to water. A determined Albion team have started to show the true grit required to hold their own in the rough and tumble of one of the toughest leagues in Europe, despite not playing their best. Whisper it gently, but they’ve even put a little run together. The hard fought 1-0 victory at Pride Park shows there is real resilience in this group of players and even though we are only a third of the way through the season, Albion are sitting very nicely in the top half of the table. As for Mr Clough the Elder’s old club, on the night The Albion crept up to seventh place in the league, Nottingham Forest lost 0-4 at home to another of Brain Clough’s old sides, Leeds United. It looks like The Albion are doing their best to cheer us all up in time for the festive season.

Photo: Paul Hazlewood

The links between the two clubs go back further than Brian Clough but looking at the success of Nottingham Forest in the past may point the way to a possible Albion future. When Clough senior left the Goldstone to take over Leeds United the principle surprise was that Brian Clough and Peter Taylor ever came to Brighton in the first place. Leeds was too good an offer to turn down at the time and Peter Taylor remained at the Goldstone to lay the bedrock of the team that Alan Mullery eventually took to the dizzy heights of the top division. It was Taylor who signed Albion legend Peter Ward, and it is arguable that Brighton & Hove Albion would have had a very different lower league history if Taylor hadn’t stayed when Clough went. As we know from the history, Clough’s tenure at Leeds was notoriously short-lived and Brian Clough then took over Nottingham Forest and lured his old pal Taylor from the Goldstone to join him. The reason for this rehash of an old tale? The parallels with the current Albion project. At the time, when Clough took over Forest, they were a fair, to middling side, with no obvious signs of the glories to come. A meteoric rise up the leagues, First Division Championships and European Cups followed, and the rest, as they say, is history. Can Albion “Clough junior has do a ‘Forest’ in the modern age? With Tony Bloom at the helm and taken to management with Gus Poyet looking more like Brian Clough by the day? What like a duck to water” are the odds?

Budget ideas

Evidence of success is that Brighton and Hove is one of only three councils to win funds from a housing organisation called the Homes and Communities Agency, Councillor Randall said. He added: “In the last week we've raised four very large grants from Europe for a variety of schemes in the city.” He said that the council was trying to tap every conceivable source of cash and that his party was proving adept at persuading decision-makers to listen and part with money.

STALLED PROJECTS NEED STARTING

Efforts were under way, he said, to get important projects moving which would help the Greens hit their own housing target. One is at Preston Barracks and another is the old fruit and veg market in Circus Street. Both involve a partnership with Brighton University. But a plan to knock down the old Co-op in London Road and turn it into housing for Sussex University students looks likely to be rejected by councillors next Wednesday (14 December). Cheap housing offers hope away from the row If the council and Brighton University can start these two stalled projects and encourage the Co-op to come up with an acceptable scheme, jobs will be about rising council tax. Frank le Duc reports supported. And homes will be created at a time when rents are high and when the construction sector may well be pricing jobs more competitively. he Greens in Brighton and Hove are trying to pull off an audacious Councillors Randall and Kitcat are talking about their budget proposals political trick. And I don’t mean a trick in the negative sense. They’ve much earlier in the financial cycle than usual. They said that they wanted to been dealt a tough financial hand as the government cuts cash grants. be open and to involve as many people as possible, including their political Eric Pickles, the cabinet minister who dishes out the government's funding rivals. Labour and the Conservatives can vote down a Green budget although pie for councils, has played the joker. He has offered a one-off £3 million they are unlikely to do so. grant to the Greens if they freeze council tax next year. The Greens also want people to appreciate some of the complexities of the Jason Kitcat, Brighton and Hove City Council's cabinet member for finance, budget even if they don't understand them. They want people’s buy-in called it a gimmick. He said that £3 million was equal to although they are realistic enough to know that not council tax going up 2.5 per cent. He wants to put it up 3.5 everyone will agree with them. Two thousand people have per cent. He says that this is vital to minimise job losses “The Greens need a already tried coming up with their own ideas for taxing and safeguard services. If he takes the money, he says and spending using the budget simulator on the council that he will have less to spend on services in future years. budget stimulator – website. In these tough times, that would be most in need” and the Conservatives – while inflation was lower. Yet some trick. n inflation was now 5 per cent, higher than the proposed increase in council tax. This is not the easiest message to sell to the public. It’s harder to grasp than the simple idea of a council tax freeze. And it’s only one of an interrelated set of messages that Councillor Kitcat spelt out last Thursday along with council leader Bill Randall, who is writing below. All sorts of fees and charges are likely to rise, from parking to burials and cremations. It won't just be the cost of living that goes up but the cost of dying too. Public toilets are to be closed, streets cleaned less often, roads less well maintained and the CD 1 numberplate on the mayor's car sold. While financial realities have curtailed some of the Greens’ pet projects, others survive. An extra £50,000 a year will be spent on managing downland owned by the council. And £500,000 is being budgeted to test food waste collections to try to improve recycling rates. Solar panels are still likely to be fitted to council buildings. But Councillor Kitcat says that this will only happen when it can be justified in financial terms – and that’s been made harder as the government is cutting the relevant subsidy.

T

SHELTERED BY A MICROCLIMATE

Another priority is housing. Councillor Randall is keen in particular to build social housing. At least a thousand more affordable homes – mostly flats for those most in need. And just as Brighton and Hove benefits from its own microclimate, shielded by the Downs from the chill north winds, he hopes the Greens can create their own financial and housing microclimate.

Brighton & Hove City Council leader Bill Randall on the White Ribbon Campaign

F

or 45 minutes last week I listened to the story of a victim of domestic violence at a living library evening organised by Rise, the Brighton-based charity that supports women, children, young people and families affected by domestic abuse in Brighton and Hove and across West Sussex. The evening marked the beginning of the International 16 Days for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which take place each year between 25 November (International End Violence Against Women Day)

and 10 December (Human Rights Day). The story, told to me in the form of a talking book, was an intensely moving account of systematic violence against a young woman who twice was taken to a local intensive care unit as a result. One fact the young woman’s story confirmed for me, is how difficult it is for women who are subjected to violence to leave the person who is carrying out the attacks on them. In many cases, the perpetrators of violence isolate their victims from family and friends, making leaving very difficult. When victims do leave home they often have nowhere to go.

This is where Rise comes in, offering shelter and support to women in need and their children.

“The national White Ribbon Campaign is led by men” Domestic abuse happens all too often in Brighton and Hove, as a recent in-depth survey carried out by the council revealed. Indeed, more than 14,800 women in Brighton and Hove experienced domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking in the last year. In response to this shameful statistic men across the city,

including me, have individually signed up to the White Ribbon Campaign pledge: never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women in all its forms today. The national White Ribbon Campaign is led by men, and calls on all men to take more responsibility for ending violence against women and to work with women to prevent it. I urge men across the city to sign the White Ribbon. Any level of violence against women is unacceptable, and the level in our city is obscene. We must all work together to treat this cancer in our society, if we are to call ourselves a civilised city. Sign the pledge at www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk

udy Stevens had just the right introduction to Brighton given the path that her career has taken. She said: “I’ve been in Brighton for 20 years. We moved here on the first day of the Festival. We got held up trying to get to our new house due to the Children’s Parade. And one of our neighbours put a leaflet through our door inviting us to her open house.” Judy, 57, is now the festival director of Artists Open Houses and is preparing for the final weekend of the three-week Christmas season. She is quick to point out that some houses are also open during the week too. She reckons it’s one of the most enjoyable ways to go Christmas shopping – and very Brighton. “This is the ninth Christmas,” Judy said. “There are 65 houses taking part.” And more than 460 artists. Open Houses at Christmas started in 2003 although the first open house was in 1982 – almost 30 years ago – when Ned Hoskins exhibited at his home in Fiveways during the Brighton Festival. latest brighton & hove news IN BRIEF n ALBION GIVEN £2M TOWARDS COST OF AMEX STADIUM DEVELOPMENT Brighton and Hove Albion have been handed a cheque for £2 million towards the cost of the development of the club’s Amex Community Stadium. The cheque was handed over at half time during the match against Coventry City by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund. The fund allocates £6 million a year from Premiership teams for ground improvements at lower league clubs. These improvements range from new football stands and turnstiles to floodlighting and improved provision for disabled supporters. The grant to Albion recognised the club’s marathon efforts to secure a proper home since leaving the Goldstone Ground in Hove in 1997. Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, said: “The fans of Brighton and Hove Albion have had a long, and at times painful, journey to the American Express Community Stadium but we hope it provides them with some exciting and stable times.” The club is preparing a planning application to add more seats to the ground which has been at capacity for almost every home game since the season started. It is also trying to secure planning permission for a training complex in Shoreham.

n £12M SCHOOL PROJECT HANDED IN

FOR EXTENSION AT PORTSLADE

A decision is expected next week on £12 million plans to extend the Chalky Road site of the Portslade Aldridge Community Academy. The aim is to bring the sixth form on to the same site as the main school which was formerly known as Portslade Community College. The Aldridge Foundation, which sponsors the academy, will learn a week tomorrow (Wednesday 14 December) whether it has planning permission to build the sixth form extension. This week, on Thursday (8 December), Brighton and Hove City Council is expected to take the next steps in the process of winning formal government approval. This is needed to release the £12 million needed to pay for the project. The application for the money from the Department for Education will be made only if planning permission is granted.

n X FACTOR CHARITY SINGLE TO HELP CHESTNUT TREE HOUSE HOSPICE Chestnut Tree House, the Sussex children’s hospice, is among 50 organisations to benefit from the X Factor charity single this year. All 50 organisations to benefit from the single care for children with lifelimiting conditions. Syco, Simon Cowell’s production company, said that it would donate 100 per cent of its profits from the sale of each CD single and download to the charities. The single is a cover version of the Rose Royce classic ‘Wishing On A Star’. It features all 16 finalists from this year’s X Factor series, along with boy bands One Direction and JLS. Money from the charity single will go be distributed via Together for Short Lives, the national association for children’s hospice services which was formerly known as ACT and Children’s Hospices UK. The single was released a week ago.

n FOOD WASTE COLLECTIONS LIKELY TO BE PILOTED IN THE SUBURBS The council is expected to decide to test food waste collections for a trial period in at least one of the suburbs of Brighton and Hove – yet to be chosen. Officials are applying to the European Union for half the costs of the £500,000 pilot scheme. The aim would be collect food waste from homes once a week and the rest of the domestic rubbish once a fortnight, with dry recycling continuing to be collected once a fortnight. The hope is that this would improve recycling rates which are below the national average. A decision is due at the council’s cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Celebcity with Jo Brooks The Ordinary Boys’ Preston interviewed, Alan Partridge’s book signing and TOWIE’s Amy Childs

No ordinary boy Catching up with Preston, after the beginning of The Ordinary Boys’ UK tour, we quizzed him on fame, music and that Huffington Post blog... Are The Ordinary Boys working on new material? “Because this tour is very much extracurricular we are recording whenever we can. Through my writing I have started producing records and I have my own studio now so I like to imagine that we can exhume the band into a kind of emeritus state and put MP3s out for free whenever we make them! We have a new song, ‘Run This Town’ that we will be playing on our tour.” What can fans expect from your tour? “This tour is about reclaiming the early days of The Ordinary Boys when we were louder and faster; fuelled by teen angst. I just fancied a few more sweaty club gigs while I was still in my 20s to rally the old fans together.” How does chart success with your own singles compare with the singles you’ve written for others? “As a writer I am always looking for the next hit. Because I write with bands and pop acts, and even some grime acts, I feel much more motivated to create a huge catalogue of co-writes to build my career. I aim for it, whereas when The Ordinary Boys achieved chart success it was kind of like, ‘really?’” You recently said that creative success seemingly comes when your love life isn’t going so well – could you pick one over the other? “I split up with my girlfriend because work was going so well in England that I couldn’t commit, so in a way I already have chosen my career. I just feel so proud and grown-up to actually have a career. I am on top of the world that I’ve found something I really enjoy and am good at! But obviously it is nice to have someone to share that with.” Is single life really that bad? No, it’s totally awesome! My Huffington Post Blog was supposed to be a celebration of singledom. I am really enjoying myself just working and reading and bro-ing down with my friends!

Brighton Dome presents a glittering Christmas line-up including two sparkling shows from Peter Schaufuss Ballet

ooking for a Christmas treat this winter? The renowned Peter Schaufuss Ballet brings two glittering ballets, suitable for all the family, to Brighton Dome. Up first is the Christmas classic The Nutcracker – A Happy Dream, the iconic Tchaikovsky ballet, brought bang up to date with 21st century costumes, but retaining the traditional movements and music, including all the classics like ‘The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’. Join Clara on her journey with the handsome Nutcracker Prince to the land of dreams and in her battle against growing up, in this multi-award winning production. The second is the sublime and romantic Romeo And Juliet, originally choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton. Schaufuss has a long-standing connection with this ballet: his mother played Juliet in the first production, and following Sir Ashton’s death he bequeathed the ballet to Peter Schaufuss. You will even recognise the music as the theme tune from TV’s The Apprentice is taken from the lively Prokofiev-written score. The perennial tail of death, devotion and star-crossed lovers is given a ‘flash of 21st century attitude’ while remaining faithful to the original choreography. Whether you want a traditional Christmas family ballet with a modern twist or the perfect romantic festive treat, ballet at Brighton Dome is the best, affordable, quality entertainment in town this winter. Tickets start at just £10 and children go half price on the top three ticket prices. But that’s not all! Brighton Dome is packed with festive offerings right through December. The popular Robin And The Big Freeze returns for children aged four and over; The Treason Show bring the satirical That Was The Year That Was 2011; the Britten Sinfonia perform Belioz’s festive and beautiful L’enfance du Christ; for the twinkle-toed the Christmas Ball, the Winter Ceilidh and the Brighton Dome Tea Dance return, and the London Gala Orchestra and Brighton Festival Chorus lead a sing-a-long in the everpopular Christmas Concert, to mention but a few. Gift ideas and a special festive party Our best-selling presents by far are Uniquely Organic gift vouchers in various denominations from £5 upwards. These can be exchanged for a sublime treatment or products, and I think they’re brilliant for giving to anyone in a demanding job or with children. The therapeutic power of touch is well established and, by combining this with the gift of ‘time out’, you can hardly go wrong (plus you can buy them online)! This year we’re trialling a ‘build-your-own-gift’ idea. You choose a fair-trade wooden gift box (or a paper carrier) and fill it with items of your choice – we have some fantastic organic products including Pinks Boutique skincare, Chakrosanct body massage oils (our own label), Nvey eco organic cosmetics, Zoya nail varnishes and Balm Balm aromatherapy oils (which, incidentally, are fantastic for creating a Christmassy atmosphere at home). We’ve got some fair-trade merchandise to include too, such as incense sticks and holders, oil burners, crystal bracelets, sensual Pukka teas, and little Buddha statues and candle holders... oh, and who’s for a singing bowl? Please come along to our Christmas party on Thursday 15 December, 6pm–8pm at the EcoSpa. Have some wine and snacks, do some gift shopping and enjoy some special offers. Merry Christmas!

STAGE: THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS Big Theatre’s saucy seasonal offering

D

o you fancy an adult fairy tale this December? Well, how about this?: An elf is apprehended in a warehouse on Christmas Eve. He begs for his freedom by telling tales of faulty sledges, white magic powder that provides that ‘Christmas feeling’ and Santa’s headquarters in Hartlepool. The Night Before Christmas is a fast paced, funny adult tale of commercialism and disappointment of the present day Christmas. It’s a grown-up comedy with sexual references and strong language, all wrapped up in a warming message of the true spirit of Christmas. Big Theatre Productions (formerly known as Big Pants Theatre Productions) are back with the same ethos, bringing good, affordable theatre to the community and raising money for their chosen charities. These are Mind Out, a mental health advocacy for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and Survivors Network, whose work involves supporting and helping victims of sexual abuse and assault. Big Theatre Productions have brought several plays to The Lectern, including their highly successful Berkoff season during the Brighton Festival Fringe 2011. They are a relatively new theatre company put together by local actors, directors and designers from all walks of life. Entering their second year of working together, Big Theatre Productions hope that The Night Before Christmas gets this next exciting chapter off with a bang. eaders of the nu-acoustic movement of the late ‘90s and early ’00s, Turin Brakes was started by longtime friends Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, releasing The Door EP in 1999 on their Brighton manager's label Anvil Records. A couple more EPs was followed by the classic The Optimist LP in 2001, which featured their trademark harmonies and melancholy grooves. Containing the hits songs ‘Underdog (Save Me)’ and ‘Emergency 72’, the album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Since then they have released four more albums including the top five Ether Song and their latest album Outburst, regarded by many as a return to their best. But for this date and tour they will be focusing on The Optimist LP, celebrating the anniversary of its release by playing the album in its entirety along with a selection of other songs from around that time. A live CD of The Optimist will be produced for release after the tour. Turin Brakes, St Mary’s Church, 61 St James’s Street, Brighton, Saturday 10 December, 7pm, £16.50 follow me on twitter

bit of a prequel here, but a long-awaited one rather than a shoe-horned cash-in on the Shrek franchise. With quite a buzz around it, this 3D swash-buckling animation sounds like the perfect Christmas family movie – with no-one of any age getting bored! So, here’s the skinny: a long time ago, way before he met Shrek, Puss In Boots was a bit of a heroic favourite, living among the fairytale folk and palling around with an egg by the name of Humpty Dumpty. However, there were some dastardly murderous outlaws to be thwarted (isn’t there always?) by the names of Jack and Jill. Puss’ plan, ably assisted by love interest Kitty Softpaws, is to steal the famous gold egg laying goose and save the world from these horrible baddies. What could go wrong? Featuring the vocal stylings of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Zach Galifianakis. Telly Talk

HARIES {Mar 21–Apr 20}

Sometimes the only way to re-invent yourself is to distance yourself from the yesterdays that defined you. You’re about to unleash your newer version: cool, clever and more inventive!

HTAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}

If a partner has become more reliant on your finances it may not bode well if you’re already feeling the seasonal pinch. However, being resourceful is a gift of yours and finding clever solutions? The universal imperative!

HGEMINI {May 22–June 21}

Venus beautifies your grunts to make sure you impress whoever has influence; this means you’ve got a power over other people’s resources much to the advantage of your hungry wallet. The chance to reveal a softer side will arise.

HCANCER {June 22–July 22}

Feeling crabby? Or just downright crabby? There is a difference, albeit a subtle one (which only you can detect). The pressure is piling on at work, which means elbow grease to keep up. A clever solution will gift you at the right time.

HLEO {July 23–Aug 22}

There’s this thing called mediocrity, have you heard of it? Didn’t think so! Never mind, all will be well if you learn to balance and find the middle ground between having the time of your life while juggling boring but important duties.

HVIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}

Around the Eclipsing Full Moon there’s magic in the air. We’re talking the kind of magic that unites your longest held professional wish with something meaningful.

HLIBRA {Sep 23–Oct 22}

What moves mountains? Faith moves mountains! So, if you’re in the mood to move a mountain, then it follows that you need to work on your faith. How hard can it be to move a mountain? If you believe you can do it, the solution will come to you now.

HSCORPIO {Oct 23–Nov 21}

The urge to break the call of duty or rules at work may become stronger. You would be wise to heed its message. If we ignore these primal urges, decisions can get taken away from us.

HSAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20}

With an Eclipsing Full Moon in your opposite sign, either you or your partner could be thinking more carefully about the way in which your relationships is balanced. If you have been too dominating lately, now could be a good time to relent.

HCAPRICORN {Dec 21–Jan 19}

On the quiet or through the mega phone you’re always building momentum towards your ambitions, but this week the pace seems to slacken as you lose focus and seek some form of escape. Don’t be too neglectful.

HAQUARIUS {Jan 20–Feb 19}

Love is intriguing, so it follows that you have never felt so compelled to dive in. You’re in demand on all fronts so finding the time to keep everyone satisfied can be tough.

HPISCES {Feb 20–Mar 20}

Whether you believe in luck is immaterial, this week’s fortune comes to you via your long-standing friendships, so if you would like to renew a bond or smooth over any previous conflicts, then do it now.

This is not the end W

hat do you get if you cross last year’s Single Father with an ITV multi-part drama? Some darn good acting, a massively convincing bereavement and a growing suspicion that all is not as it seems. Is anything ever as it seems on ITV? Are cops ever anything except shouty or blind to the real truths dug out at great personal peril by civilians? It seems that with the disappearance of The Bill we also lost a wide variety of police type characters, but that’s by the by. Without You is here and it’s mixing mourning with investigation, isolation and concern to make something shaping up to be really rather intriguing. Here’s the lowdown: Anna Friel and Marc Warren are happily married, been together for 12 years and currently trying for a kid. He’s an accountant and she’s a nursery school teacher and they have a really lovely house that, although needing some work, would be way out of their price range if it was down here, but again I digress. They’re in Manchester and I haven’t a Scooby how much Victorian houses cost in that neck of the woods. Anyway, pretty early on (so I’m not spoiling anything here) he dies in a car crash with an unknown female passenger next to him, implying all that had at first appeared rosy was actually less so in his mind. First big question: was he having an affair? The acting is superb. Does Anna Friel want there to be something more suspicious about their deaths in order to keep her own memory of their relationship pure? Is the dead woman’s husband acting bizarrely or is it simply you cannot expect all marriages to be the same? Does it make a difference that Anna Friel’s parents are both long dead and she doesn’t feel especially close to Marc Warren’s folks, so adding to her isolation? Should I probably use the characters’ names rather than the actors’? Based on the bestselling novel What To Do When Someone Dies by Nicci French, it’s gratifying to see

a collection of characters all quite diverse, offering their own form of support that together make up a mismatched patchwork of a hammock to try and replace the constant warmth and assurance gone with the dead husband. The only slightly annoying thing is the pat platitudes uttered by Marc Warren from beyond the grave. However, contrasting with everyone else’s regular dialogue it does acknowledge with its very blandness that these are simply words a mourning soul is demanding to hear, rather than suggesting any actual supernatural competent to the story.

“They’re in Manchester and I haven’t a Scooby how much houses cost in that neck of the woods” Anna Friel – gotta love her from Brookside to Pushing Up Daisies. Marc Warren – enchanting from The Hustle to Doctor Who and beyond. Put them together with an already proven story and I’m curious as to what will develop. Already intriguing, I’m hoping it will become must-see. It’s just got to live up to all that potential then. Without You, ITV1, Thursday 8 December follow me on twitter
