Hi!

Megálmodtunk egy COVID-kiállítást, ami olyan lesz, mint a mai állapotunk: vagyunk ugyan, de mintha valahogy mégsem lennénk. Mellékelem a koncepciót, ami alapján az ArtBázis-on ezt meg is csináljuk.

We have dreamt up a COVID exhibition, which is going to be like our state of being today: we subsist as if we didn’t exist at all. I would like to propose a concept which makes it possible to do this on ArtBase.

Azt szeretnénk hangsúlyozni, hogy virtualitás ide vagy oda, a ﬁzikai valóságot nem pótolja semmi. Ahogy a közösségeket sem, amik létezésében, összetartásában szintén különleges jelentőségű a valós együttlét.

We would like to emphasise that virtuality or no, nothing replaces physical reality. Nor does anything replace communities, whose existence and cohesion depends on physically being together.

Mivel mindez most nem lehetséges, arra kérem a FotóFalu közösségét, hogy aki teheti, vegyen részt egy gesztus megalkotásában. Egy olyan Tárlatkarantén létrehozásában, ami kifejezetten azért készül, hogy mementója legyen a mai helyzetnek. Felépítünk egy kiállítást az ArtBázison, ami soha nem fog megnyílni. Fő célja az, hogy emlékeztessen: az egymással és a hagyományos (ﬁzikailag létező) műtárgyakkal való kapcsolatot nem pótolja semmi. De nem mellesleg egyszerre vanitas-szimbólum és a kitartás gesztusa is.

As this is not possible at the moment, I am asking those within the PhotoVillage community who possibly can to take part in the creation of a special gesture: in the creation of an Exhibition Quarantine that is expressly meant to be a record of our present time. We are constructing an exhibition on ArtBase that will never open. Its main purpose is to remind us that nothing replaces the relationship with each other and our traditional (i.e., physically existing) objects. And not incidentally, this is meant to be a symbol of vanity and an act of perseverance.

A felépített kiállítást élőben streameljük majd, de nem azzal a céllal, hogy pótlékot nyújtsunk a valós megtekintés helyett. Ellenkezőleg, azt a hiányt akarjuk érzékeltetni, amit a kiállítás meglátogatásának lehetetlensége generál. Ezért egyetlen kamerát rögzítünk a bejáratnál, ami a hivatalos nyitvatartási időben folyamatos online képet fog adni az enteriőrről – anélkül, hogy az egyes művek jól megtekinthetőek lennének. És naponta egyszer körbemegy egy takarítórobot. Erre is rögzítünk egy kamerát, ami szintén streamel. Egy olyan kaotikus látványt, amilyet az érzelemmentes, feladatorientált technológia mintegy mellesleg létrehoz.

The exhibition we built will be streamed live, but not in order to give us a substitute for real-life viewing. On the contrary, we wish to make everyone feel the absence created by the impossibility of viewing. This is why we installed one single camera at the entrance, which will stream a continuous view of the interior during oﬃcial opening hours – without making it possible to view the individual pieces. And once a day, a cleaning robot will be passing through the interior. A camera will be attached to it, which will also be showing a live stream. It shall stream the chaotic view that is generated by an emotionless, taskoriented piece of technology, more or less as a byproduct.

A kiállítás addig tart, amíg a vészhelyzet. Azon a napon, amikor újra lehetségessé válik a művészeti intézmények látogatása, ezt a kiállítást bezárjuk.

The exhibition will last as long as the emergency. The day it is once again possible to visit institutions of art, the exhibition will be closed.

Utána kiadunk egy katalógust, de ebben sem a műtárgyak reprodukciói, hanem a streamekből kiemelt, rossz minőségű képkockák szerepelnek majd. Azon résztvevő alkotók szövegeivel, akik adnak leírást, koncepciót a munkájukhoz.

Afterwards, a catalogue will be published, but it will not feature the reproduction of the exhibited objects, but a selection of the low-quality images that were streamed, as well as their descriptions and main themes, as provided by their creators.

Olyan műveket várunk, amik a járványra reagálnak. Nem kell, hogy új legyen: sok régebbi mű átértelmeződik pusztán azáltal, ahogyan a jelen helyzetben megváltozik a hozzáállásunk.

We are expecting the submission of pieces that comment on the epidemic. They need not be new. Many older pieces gain new meaning by the simple fact that our approaches change in the present situation.

Szóval azt kérjük, hogy akinek ez az ötlet szimpatikus, és nem mellesleg: akár a munkája kapcsán, akár az egészségügyi sétája erre áldozásával megteheti most, hogy ﬁzikailag eljuttassa valamelyik művét hozzánk, az vegyen 8

So, we are asking those who like this idea and, not incidentally, those who have the opportunity either through their work, or who may wish to dedicate one of their walks permitted for health reasons to

Elsősorban kész, kiállításra alkalmas állapotú (keretezett/kasírozott, akasztóval ellátott képeket, illetve külön rögzítés nélkül stabilan megálló szobrokat, plasztikákat) várunk. (Digitális fotók esetén, ha az alkotó nem tudja megoldani, egyedileg megbeszéljük, esetleg tudjuk-e mi nyomtatni/installálni a képet.) Ugyanakkor valódi kiállítást csinálunk, tehát a minőség fontos! A tárlatnak, mint esztétikai egységnek és az egyes műveknek egyaránt pont olyan igényesnek kell lenniük, mint amilyeneket normál esetben szívesen és büszkén látogatunk, illetve mutatunk be! Mivel lehetséges, hogy a közeljövőben lesznek további járványügyi intézkedések, amik esetleg ellehetetlenítik a felépítést, gyorsan kell dolgoznunk. A kiállításra szánt tárgyak digirepróit április 18., szombat éjfélig várjuk a galoslaszlonorbert@gmail.com emailcímre. A kiválasztott alkotásokról 19-én, vasárnap értesítjük az alkotókat. A kiállítást május 2-3-án építjük fel, így két hét áll majd rendelkezésre a postázásra, illetve leadásra. Az alkotásokat április 20-tól lehet majd személyesen leadni a Café Analóg-ban minden nap 12-14h közt, vagy elpostázni nekem. (Ha valaki járványügyi, netán gazdasági okokból végképp nem tudja megoldani a szállítást, egyedileg egyeztessük, érte tudunk-e menni!) Emellett (szintén e-mailben) várnánk egy hosszabb távon nélkülözhető, de működőképes takarítórobot felajánlását is, bizonytalan időre... Primarily, we are calling for submissions that are ready to be put on exhibit (pictures that are framed/ laminated, mounted; sculptures that can stay stable without any additional support). If someone wishes to submit a digital photo, but they are unable to get it ready, we might be able arrange its printing and installation on an individual basis. At the same time, we are creating a real exhibition, so quality is of the utmost importance! Both the exhibition as an aesthetical unit and each individual creation must be of the same high standard that we would normally be happy and proud to view and present to the public! As there may be further epidemiological restrictions coming in the foreseeable future that could make the installation of the exhibition impossible, it is important for us to move quickly. We are calling for submissions of digital reproductions of the pieces meant for the exhibition by midnight, Saturday April 18 at galoslaszlonorbert@gmail.com. We will let the creators of the chosen pieces know by the following Sunday, April 19. The exhibition will be constructed between May 23, so there will be two weeks provided for shipping or personal delivery. You may personally deliver your artifacts from April 20 at Café Analóg every day between 12 and 2 pm, or send them to me by post. (If someone is still unable to arrange shipping or delivery, we might be able to arrange a personal pick up.) In addition, if, for an indeﬁnite length of time, you can spare a cleaning robot that is still in good working condition, we would appreciate the oﬀer. Az Introverziók című sorozat létrehozásának gondolata már évekkel ezelőtt megfogalmazódott bennem. A technikai fejlődés következtében felgyorsult világunkban a virtualitás szerepe annyira megnőtt, hogy ez a valósághoz való viszonyunkat és értékrendünket veszélyes mértékben befolyásolta. Az igazi jelenlét, a hétköznapi jelenségek valódi megélése, a „befelé fordulás” képessége szinte teljesen elveszni látszott.

A sors úgy hozta, hogy mire a sorozat elkészült, már nem csak egy kritikát fogalmazott meg, hanem valódi aktualitást nyert. A koronavírus okozta járványnak köszönhetően egy világméretű lassulás következett be. A karantén-helyzet rákényszerített minket arra, hogy csupán szűkebb környezetünkre, valódi önmagunkra koncentráljunk. Az Introverziók lényegében önmaguk árnyékát rögzítő fotópapírok. A képek elkészítése során nem használtam sem negatív ﬁlmet sem tárgyakat. Közvetlenül a fotópapírra exponáltam, majd ezt hagyományos módon, vegyszerekkel hívtam elő. Technikai értelemben az így létrehozott kép egy olyan fotogram, ahol a végeredményt nem befolyásolja semmilyen külső tárgy, a fény megformálása csupán a különböző módon meghajlított papírok pillanatnyi állapotától függ. A sorozat érdekessége, hogy az egyes fotók működnek síkban kiterítve és térben meghajlítva is, de egyszerre nem látható mindkét állapot. Az Introverziók első darabja egy posztamensen, befelé hajlított állapotban került kiállításra a Tárlatkarantén alkalmával. A vészhelyzet feloldásával a kiállítás is véget ért és a fotó ismét kiterített állapotba került.

The thought of creating the Introversions Series came up years ago. In the world accelerated by technological development, the role of virtuality has grown so much that it influences our relationship to reality and our value system to a dangerous extent. Real presence, experiencing everyday phenomena in a deep sense, the ability to “introspect” seemed to be getting lost. As fate would have it, by the time the series was completed, it did not merely provide social criticism but gained genuine relevance. As a result of the epidemic caused by coronavirus, a worldwide slow-down has occurred. The quarantine made us concentrate on our more immediate surroundings and true selves. Introversions is, in essence, photo papers capturing their own shadows. I have not used any negatives or objects to create these images. I have exposed the photo paper and developed them in a traditional manner, with chemicals. In a technical sense, the created image is a photogram, whereby the end result is influenced by no external object. The shaping of light depends on the momentary state of the folded papers. The interesting thing about the series is that each image works well both spread over a twodimensional surface and folded into threedimensional space, but both states cannot be seen at once. The first piece in Introversions was displayed on a pedestal in Exhibition Quarantine folded inwards. As the state of emergency was lifted, the photo has been returned to its twodimensional shape.

Általában nem az „itt és most”, sokkal inkább az „általános és örökérvényű” (-nek hitt, de legalábbis sokáig meghatározó...) témák izgatnak, de most mégis úgy érzem, eljött az idő, hogy reagáljak a koronavírus-helyzetre. Szerencsére van mihez kapcsolni: már egy ideje foglalkoztat a digitális/ informatikai forradalom ránk, és persze a kultúrára gyakorolt hatása. Különösképpen az alkotási és befogadási, valamint kommunikációs tevékenységek és habitusok, meg persze lehetőségek változásai, a hagyományos és a digitális metódusok egymásra gyakorolt hatása érdekel.

Generally speaking, I have always been interested less in the “here and now” and more in (what was believed to be, or at least what was considered for a long time to be) the “universal and timeless”. At the moment, however, I feel the time has come for me to respond to the coronavirus situation. Fortunately, there is something to connect the topic to: for a time now, I have been fascinated by the eﬀect of the digital and information revolution on us, and of course on culture. I am especially interested in the habits of creation and appreciation, acts of communication, and of course, the change in opportunities, and the eﬀect traditional and digital methods have on each other.

Nyilvánvaló, hogy a virtuális világ térnyerését nagyban elősegíti a jelenlegi helyzet. És az is, hogy a kulturális élet azonnal reagál: már az első vészintézkedések (köztük a tömegrendezvények betiltásának) napján megjelentek a néző nélküli, online közvetített előadások, koncertek, valamint sok múzeum és galéria is pillanatokon belül átállt az online kultúraközvetítésre. Ami önmagában is nagyon jó, de ráadásul felvet egy (számomra) nagyon izgalmas lehetőséget: azt, hogy megpróbáljam ennek a kényszerdigitalizációnak a szubjektív megélését analóg fényképeken rögzíteni. Mától megpróbálok minél több, a járvány miatt online platformra került műalkotást, sőt: bármilyen online eseménydokumentációt a képernyőn keresztül, de analóg eszközökkel egyetlen képbe sűríteni. Bár technikailag nem megvalósíthatatlan, most kevésbé érdekel, hogy ﬁgurálisan leképezzem ezen adásokat. Az az érzés, hangulat és mögöttes jelentéstartalom érdekel, amit ezek a magányba kényszerített társas események önkéntelenül és megkerülhetetlenül (is) hordoznak. Például az a videó, amit épp a járványhelyzet miatt, mintegy életjelként kért tőlem (is) a PH 21 Galéria. Kezdetnek jó lesz, ha ezt átteszem üveglemezre – és persze hipóval fertőtlenítem az ambrotípiát. Talán így is marad valami...

It is quite evident that the present situation aids the process of the virtual world gaining ground. It is likewise evident that cultural life reacts instantaneously: even on the day the first emergency measures (banning mass gatherings) were put into effect, the streaming of performances and concerts without an audience had already started. Many museums and galleries switched to an online method of mediating culture in mere moments. This in itself is great. Moreover, it provides an exciting opportunity (for me): to try and record the subjective experience of this forced digitalisation via traditional analogue photos. From today on, I shall try to condense every work of art that is placed on an online platform – or indeed every kind of documentation of an event on the digital screen – into a single image by using analogue equipment. Though technologically speaking, this is not impossible, I am much less interested in mediating these signals in a figurative manner. What interests me are the feelings, mood and covert meaning that these social gatherings which are forced into solitude unintentionally and inevitable carry. For instance, the video that PH 21 Gallery asked from me as a sign of life, specifically because of the epidemic. As a starting point, placing this sign of life onto a glass plate will suffice – and of course I will use bleach to disinfect the ambrotype. Hopefully, there willl still be something to see…
