After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. – Aldous Huxley Music at Night and Other Essays

I’m very excited to be introducing the Las Vegas Philharmonic’s 2016-17 season to you! This last season was a blueprint for our future. It set us on a course of discovery, both for music we hadn’t yet experienced and for music with which we’re all happily familiar. We introduced and expanded so many wonderful components of what I believe to be essential for a symphony orchestra to remain relevant: community engagement with concerts brought directly to you; expanding and reshaping our education concerts for an ever-increasing and appreciative audience of children; interactive pre and post-concert activities that connect you with our musicians; and, most importantly, passionately performed music, both new and old, by a world-class orchestra.

KEVIN BEAVERS Bright Sky – West Coast Professional Premiere MOZART Exsultate, Jubilate, K165 MAHLER Symphony No. 4 in G Major OPENING NIGHT SOARS with vivid lyricism as the orchestra launches the season with the West Coast professional premiere of American composer Kevin Beavers’ Bright Sky, a bristling concert opener based on Diane Gregory’s poem, “The Sky in Connemara.” Mozart’s Exsultate, Jubilate, famously written in three weeks at the age of sixteen, is an exquisitely crafted concerto meant to showcase its chosen instrument – the human voice. Maria Valdes, an accomplished young soprano and alumnus of the prestigious San Francisco Opera Adler Fellowship, will be our featured soloist for both Mozart and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, a joyful and exultant work that captures this towering composer at his most tender and playful.

Donato Cabrera, conductor

ROSSINI Overture to William Tell • BIZET Suite No.1 from Carmen SAINT-SAËNS Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah, Opus 47 SUPPÉ Light Cavalry Overture • BORODIN Polovetsian Dances from Prince Igor STRAUSS An der schönen blauen Donau (On the Beautiful Blue Danube), Opus 314 SYMPHONIC BLOCKBUSTERS used in American radio, television and film will stir nostalgia in this electrifying program. Leaping into high gear, the concert begins with Gioachino Rossini’s famous overture from his final opera, William Tell. The orchestra manifests a boundless energy balanced with tantalizing softness as it weaves through Georges Bizet’s infamous, at times ominous, Carmen Suite. The orgiastic, Bacchanale, from Camille Saint-Saëns’s opera, Samson and Delilah, delivers vivid punctuation to end the stimulating first half. Franz von Suppé’s triumphant Light Cavalry Overture opens the second half, sweeping the audience into twists and turns before giving way to Alexander Borodin’s exotic Polovetsian Dances, from his unfinished opera, Prince Igor. Johann Strauss’s masterful and beloved, Blue Danube Waltz, provides the lush and rhythmic finale to the evening, simultaneously thrilling, evocative and satisfying. 3

MOZART Symphony No. 1, K16 HAYDN Symphony No. 104, “London” BEETHOVEN Violin Concerto in D Major, Opus 61 THIS TRILOGY OF POWERHOUSE COMPOSERS represents some of the most prolific and influential talents in music. Joseph Haydn assumes his customary role of “Papa” with works of former students, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, book-ending his “London” Symphony. Mozart’s first symphony, written at age eight, opens the concert and exemplifies the unique musical voice of this boy wonder. Haydn’s final symphony, full of grandeur and exuberance, is being performed for the first time by the Las Vegas Philharmonic. Soloist Tobias Feldmann, who won three prizes at the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition in 2012, closes the show performing Beethoven’s noble, Violin Concerto.

CLARICE ASSAD Nhanderú – West Coast Premiere NATHANIEL STOOKEY YTTE (Yield to Total Elation) – World Premiere

A BUCOLIC MUSICAL POSTCARD marks our orchestra’s inaugural performances of three works spanning classical and modern eras. Las Vegas resident and worldrenowned composer Michael Torke has a reputation for “some of the most optimistic, joyful and thoroughly uplifting music to appear in recent years” (Gramophone). Hailed as “a master orchestrator whose shimmering timbral palette makes him the Ravel of his generation” (New York Times), he has created a substantial body of works in virtually every genre. Acclaimed Decca Classics recording artist, Maria Radutu has performed throughout Europe and Asia and won more than twenty national and international awards. She joins the orchestra on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, a sparkling piece that shows off the virtuosity of both the soloist and the celebrated composer. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony No. 6, an ode to his undeniable love of and need for nature, brims with poetic beauty.

DVORÁK

Symphony No. 7 in D Minor, Opus 70

YOUR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GOES TRIBAL as we celebrate Donato’s birthday with the West Coast premiere of Clarice Assad’s overture, Nhanderú, a musical portrait of an Amazon basin ritual that focuses on faith, prayer, and gratitude. Nathaniel Stookey’s orchestral version of YTTE (Yield to Total Elation), a piece inspired by the story of A.G. Rizzoli, a humble draftsman who created elaborate designs for a vast imaginary city, receives its world premiere. Finally, one of Donato’s favorite pieces, Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, creates a fantastic counterpoint as the centerpiece for the second half of this celebratory concert. Known for its dramatic expression and brooding atmosphere, this is perhaps one of Dvořák’s most personal, self-explorative works.

EVOCATIVE, POETIC AND LIFE-AFFIRMING, this powerful program begins with the premiere of Las Vegas resident Jennifer Bellor’s 898 Hildegard, a piece for orchestra and chorus that intertwines excerpts from the medieval composer Hildegard von Bingen’s chants “O Vis Eternitatis” and “O Gloriosissimi Lux Vivens Angeli.” Robert Schumann attained the elusive union of music and poetry, an ultimate goal of the Romantic era artist. His music abounds with quick mood changes, tumult, profound statements, and touching delicacy, all of which is found in the Overture, Scherzo and Finale. Championed by Schumann, Johannes Brahms’s immensely popular German Requiem is a consoling and comforting piece, providing solace to all that hear and perform it. The Las Vegas Master Singers, UNLV Concert Singers & Chamber Chorale, along with soloists Alisa Jordheim and Will Liverman join forces with your symphony orchestra to deliver a stirring performance. 9

Donato Cabrera, conductor Liam Boisset, oboe

MOZART Overture to Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), K620 STRAUSS, R. Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra BRUCKNER Symphony No. 6 THEATRICS AND DARING abound in this hearty program featuring an overture from Wolfgang Amadeus’ last opera, Richard Strauss's only concerto for oboe and Anton Bruckner’s awe-inspiring sixth symphony. The Overture to Mozart's final opera, The Magic Flute, opens the performance with dramatic flair. Rising star, Liam Boisset will make his debut playing Richard Strauss’s autumnal, Oboe Concerto, famously inspired by conversations between the aging composer and a young U.S. soldier, an oboist, at the end of WWII. The evening concludes with Anton Bruckner’s magisterial Symphony No. 6, one of the only symphonies that remained unchanged by the composer. This glorious symphony is a poignant way to finish our 18th season - the 1899 premiere was conducted by none other than Gustav Mahler, who was in the midst of composing his Symphony No. 4 at the same time.

10

Alisa Jordheim, soprano / Cabrera Conducts Brahms Praised for her compelling and vocally assured performances in opera, oratorio, musical theatre, and recital, American soprano Alisa Jordheim has made appearances with numerous orchestras, including the Milwaukee and Columbus Symphonies, as well as many opera companies throughout the United States. More than 200,000 students have been impacted by this important classical music experience, which is the culminating activity of a corresponding curriculum designed by the Philharmonic and the School District. Many of these children are experiencing live classical music for the first time. Expansion of the Series is underway, with plans to double the annual capacity from 16,000 to 32,000 students over the next three years. The Series is offered freeof-charge to the schools, with costs underwritten by the Philharmonic’s generous corporate and individual donors and grant organizations.

Musicians also visit local schools to deliver Master Classes.
