It must be their thinking as they translate directly from Chinese to English and it ends up as Chinglish. Do you have any favourite sports? Swimming is my favourite sport and I go to the gym twice a week. I feel like swimming can work all the muscles in my body and I love letting my mind wander whilst I am in the pool.

What is the biggest benefit of teaching at Elite? For me, its to be a perpetual student and to conquer the difficulties of everyday, and it’s a huge honour to work with a lot of brilliant people.

Why are you teaching English? Initially it was a good fit for my move to China, however it has opened up some great opportunities I was previously unaware of.

What do you think is the best study method? There is no single one however immersion conquers academics – always. Learn by doing (oh and our students need to stop reading and start listening!)

What is the biggest benefit of teaching at Elite? Flexibility – although we have a structured program, I like it when we get chance to teach using our individual skills and based on the needs of our students/customers. What, in your opinion, is the average Chinese student’s

worst English learning habit? Mostly it’s Chinglish related or habitual mistakes that may have come from High School or earlier tuition. “so-so”, “delicious” and “seldom” are banned from my classes as a result !

Why are you teaching English? Language is, afterall, power. Being able to teach and give power to those around me gave me a great sense of satisfaction. But that wasn’t enough. As a teacher, I could only teach a certain number of students. By becoming a teacher trainer, I found that I have extended my reach to all students that are taught by the teachers attending my training.

What do you excel at teaching? I excel at large classroom debate classes. It is definitely one of my favourite places to be. I enjoy the raw energy created by lifting the students into fits of rage as they argue about which colour is better, blue or red!

What do you think is the best study method? Set small achievable goals. Make sure that this goal is paramount to that long term goal and then do everything in your power to achieve it. Break it down into minutes if you have to. Think big. Do small.

What have your students taught you? The most important thing that I have learnt is that mostly, I am wrong. My opinion is just my own and I should never force that opinion on anyone. Ever.
