Pedigree Block Key:

First of all, I’d like to thank all our customers for your generous support of our programs over the years. We certainly would not be where we are today without each and every one of you! Your combined confidence in our programs allows us to continue our quest of improving and building good cowherds across the west. It’s a journey that is both arduous and ultimately rewarding as we see progress made toward our goal of providing a consistent, functional product that performs well on the available resources, covers lots of varied terrain, breeds lots of cows and survives to do it again and again. At the same time, leaving daughters that do the same without needing any excuses. Sounds pretty straight forward and simple right? Yeah, that’s what I thought too about 20 years ago when I thought I was pretty sappy and smart. Today I will tell you that it has been a truly challenging, rewarding, often times frustrating and confounding climb through a myriad of genetics and management practices that have led to where I sit today penning the 35th sale catalog letter of my career.

Lots of things have changed, especially the type and kind of bull that we march out today. These bulls have been slowly settling into a fairly defined genetic base with a more consistent phenotype than back in the earlier years. Moderate, deep-bodied, thick ended cattle that have plenty of power and visible muscle mass are what you expect to find here at the Herd Builder Bull Sale. And most bulls check those boxes right off. We have avoided the slippery slope of breeding for a certain defined set of numbers, yet always paying attention to them and enjoying watching our cattle ratio right in there with some of the popular bulls we choose to use. I have seen the average weight of my mature cows decrease over 300 lbs with little to no change in weaning weights. We run more cows today than we ever have, due in part to effectively managing our grass, but also due to the fact these girls simply are not weighing 1600 lbs. I always remember that the most important number is the one at the bottom of the ledger every year, and I like it when it’s black.

The current market situation looks really good for most of us. We are seeing prices that are taking a run at the unprecedented years of 2014-2016. For this I am thankful. We all know that God provides well for those of us that work hard and care for His creation, but I think many of us were spending more time in recent years looking up and wondering. I know I was. I still spend a lot of time gazing into the heavens but lately God notices the concern has been replaced with a truly grateful gaze. We do serve a Mighty and Benevolent Creator.

The bulls. The JR Ranch bulls are not fed to be as big and good looking as possible. I simply believe if I can just grow these guys up at a moderate pace, not getting them too big or getting them over conditioned that it will do nothing but increase longevity. It sure makes the first year easier on them. They have plenty of challenges without packing too much flesh. This is the first spring sale to see sons of 80F, 887, 9116 or 7519. For those of you looking for an outcross to our standard fare, both 887 and 7519 offer this. The 7519 daughters are good. Just like they are supposed to be! His sire, V910 was a sire of truly good females. 887 has surprised us with being a lower birth sire than anticipated. His dam, the 4183 cow that was responsible for the 2020 flush of brothers that topped our event has 2 sons again this year. The 189J bull is about as good genetically and phenotypically as you can ask for. I think he is just really the complete package. The 147J bull is special. Powerful, athletic and just plain good from all angles. His sire is now seeing a lot of cows naturally here and breeds like a boss. If his low birth numbers prove true and he stays healthy, we plan to AI a lot of heifers to him. I have watched this bull from the start. You are going to like him too.

Just a quick acknowledgement of the contribution that the Sackmann family continues to provide to make this day happen. They are continually encouraging, always patient and ultimately responsible for our sale catalog. Beyond that, they are great friends and share our vision of the type and kind we produce, how we raise them, and steadfastly standing behind these bulls when they don’t meet your expectations. Please take advantage of their super set of OCC Double Wide 715D sons. The bull is for real. He has exceeded my expectations with his first set of daughters. They are the right kind. As always, feel free to call us and discuss cattle or cuss politicians. We enjoy both! Looking forward to catching up on sale day.

I always struggle with how to start this letter, but “friends” feels appropriate, given that so many of you have truly become friends as well as valued customers. To this day my favorite task (despite the hours, miles and diesel expense) is delivering bulls and having the chance to visit with so many good and interesting people. We sincerely appreciate your business and the support of our program that allows us to live our dream. I don’t call as often as I should, but I do enjoy the feedback I get, texts and pictures of good things our bulls are doing for you. Please continue to let us know how we are doing. Sustained relevance and usefulness to our commercial customers is the top priority here.

We are committed to keeping it as simple as possible. Our matings, replacement selection and culling are oriented toward relentless improvement of our herd for fleshing ability, fertility, soundness of foot, leg & udder structure with profitable performance and practical cow size. It is a process that continues with more hits than misses and I am confident that we are moving in the right direction. With that being said, every new calf crop should be the best one. I generally try not to make that claim because it is such a cliché. This year however, I feel strongly enough to say that this is the best set of bulls I have ever been able to offer! The quality, consistency and power of this group is impressive. Putting together the catalog order has been a challenge with so many really good bulls in every pen and so many elite bulls in different sire groups. The Resource cattle have been so well accepted that I chose two Resource daughters (of our old OCC Eureka cow) – 7144 and 6124 - to add to the ET program. They both were good embryo producers, and the quality of the bull calves they produced from each mating was everything I had hoped for. Their combined 16 progeny represent a great opportunity to put together a group of closely related bulls that can positively impact the quality and uniformity of your next calf crop.

Please consider our invitation to join us in Othello on Monday, March 20th at the JR Ranch sale barn. There will be good food, good cattle and lots of great people to help us celebrate the things that God has blessed us with – our industry, our families and the great country we live in!

Call or visit any time to come look through the bulls or take a tour of the cow herd. I’d love to show you around unless I’m at a basketball game.....Come say hi at the State B Tournament in Spokane, as our Warden Lady Cougars (with Molly and Lila on the team) will be defending their State Championship!

Thank you,

Jeff & Jaime Sackmann

Sid & Debbie have made all of this possible through all of their hard work and sacrifice since buying the original farm (where they still live) in 1976. They enjoy spending time at their house on Deer Lake in the summer and watching their grandkids pley basketball this time of year. Thanks for everything Mom & Dad!

Matt Hayter has been working for us since 2011. He is a talented and hardworking individual that enjoys a challenge. He handles the lion’s share of the daily operations on the farm which allows me to be so involved with our kids activities. He and Dannielle have two boys, Paxton (4) and Landon (2) that love to “help” their dad on the farm. Thanks for all of your hard work, Matt!

Bravado 2019

20377098

Remember, it ain’t bragging if you can back it up! “Bravado” is the total package with the resume to be a serious herd bull candidate. His pedigree combines two of the most famous cows in the history of the Angus breed, Coleman Donna 714 and S A V Blackcap May 4136. His maternal grand dam, O C C Dixie Erica 871N was very productive and eye-appealing beyond her 16th birthday. Two daughters of 871N (sired by Resource) 6124 and 7144, are both serving as donors for us and are well represented in this offering. This bull’s dam, “7144” possesses a rare combination of fleshing ability, power and performance. Bravado’s own performance is off the charts, weaning off his dam at 990 pounds and ranks #1 among his contemporaries for actual and adjusted weaning weight, #1 for actual yearling weight, #4 for adjusted yearling weight, and #1 for both WW epd and YW epd. He scanned a big ribeye that earned a 108 ratio. He combines this performance with percentile rankings of 85 for Mature Weight and 95 for Mature Height. These tabulations indicate that he is a unique individual that can seriously impact the power and performance of a calf crop while leaving daughters that should be very productive in the right size package. He is sound, wide based and packed full of muscle while displaying a tremendous amount of shape and volume of rib cage. I intend to use this bull in our breeding program. Selling 2/3 Interest and Full Possession.

Big, stout, performance powerhouse with a loaded maternal pedigree. His ribeye ranked #1(tie) with an adjusted RE ratio of 113. He ranks #2 for adjusted YW and YW epd. Renown has proven to be a sire of elite females, and this bull’s fertile, pathfinder donor dam has been one of our best producers. Her first calf served as a herd sire for Jay Smith’s registered program in Carmen, Idaho.

Here is a long, smooth made, eye-appealing performance-oriented bull that ranked #1 (tie) for actual yearling weight. He is a maternal brother to “Reservoir” that we retained to use in our herd. His dam is a big middled, massive power cow that entered our donor program this year and just made pathfinder again. We used Marshall to get the influence of the beautiful Coleman Donna 197 cow.

This Marshall son ranked #4 for ribeye with a ratio of 114. He is a big topped, wide based, heavily muscled rascal with a ton of rib shape and performance.

This is a sharp looking Rainfall son that will catch your eye. He ratioed 108 for IMF and 109 for RE. His dam has a really good udder and has consistently been a good producer. Could be used on heifers with some discretion.

This is a big, growthy bull with a lot of substance that ranked #5 for actual WW. His dam has a 362 day calving interval and her calves always perform.

I used Stellar after seeing a bunch of his daughters that I really liked while at Sitz Angus in Montana. We start this sire group with a truly elite performance bull. He tied for the top actual weaning weight of his calf crop and finished #2 for adjusted WW, WW epd and YW epd, as well as #4 for actual YW. He is long bodied with the frame built to perform. His pathfinder dam is a maternal sister to Solo.

We start the group of 6124 sons with this pair of full brothers sired by Stellar. They are peas in a pod, stout, long sided with plenty of eye appeal and performance. Use them to produce elite females that you will love when they fill your replacement pen.

This bull is a stud! I’m guessing he was held back by his recip mother because since entering the feedlot he has put the hammer down! From August 10 to January 4, he was the top performer at 3.84 lb./ day. Very 3 dimensional in his type with tons of rib shape and muscle on a wide base. Full brother to a herd bull we retained.

“726D”

Sackmann Stellar 2539

6124 took an unorthodox path to the donor pen. She displayed her fertility at an early age, with her unplanned pregnancy resulting in having her first calf at 15 ½ months of age. She received no special care as I would have preferred to have her in the fall herd. She had her second calf 363 days after her first and did a good job. At that time the spring herd was primarily devoted to making steers for the kids to show and I didn’t always turn in weaning weights on the handful of spring registered cows. I then bred her to a sim-angus bull for her third calf, moving her up a couple more weeks in the process. That was a great steer that didn’t get to show (2020 feels like a long time ago now, doesn’t it?). Her fourth calf was a ripping stud of a bull we ended up keeping and I decided to flush her a few times on the way to getting her in the fall herd where she belongs. Broody, capacious, sound, productive fertile is how I would describe her. The ET progeny from each mating are consistently good.

We start the Double Wide sire group with this outstanding individual that I always see standing square and correct. He is moderate framed, stout, deep bodied and wide based. This bull is a personal favorite that I would like to use back in our own herd. Selling 2/3 interest and Full Possession.

Sackmann doUBle wide 2029

This Double Wide son is a heifer bull deluxe that cracked the top 5 of this calf crop for adjusted 205 day weight and earned a 108 ribeye ratio. He couples this performance with an eye appealing package that is very moderate and wide based. He has an incredible amount of rib shape and volume.

Sackmann doUBle wide 2027

Here is a heifer bull with excellent performance and stems from a very good cow family. The Double Wide daughters are consistently good and have surpassed our expectations.

First Calf Daughters

This is another solid heifer bull with a little more size and scale that performed well. He is a maternal brother to the Bravo son that sold last year to Dutch Flat Angus and Dixon Land & Livestock.

This is a Double Wide son with added size, scale and performance that I would like to use. He ranked #4 for adjusted 205 day weight, and #1 for adjusted 365 day weight. I love his dam for her excellent feet, solid udder, fleshing ability and production. She is on the short list to enter the donor pen soon. The daughters of this bull should be outstanding! Selling 2/3 Interest and Full Possession.

Sackmann doUBle wide 2034 (ohP)

The quality runs deep in this sire group. He was the third heaviest at weaning, helping his dam become a third generation pathfinder!

If you ever encountered “River” you knew you had seen a real beef bull. He packed an unreal amount of muscle, dimension and rib shape on a very moderate frame. This son is an excellent representative of his sire, ranking #5 for adjusted 365 day weight in a modestly framed package. He is very 3 dimensional and displays plenty of muscle and volume. His dam is a nice little Unmistakable cow that goes back to our 9732 donor. Don’t overlook this bull, he is really good.

Sackmann renown 2510

Here is a flush brother to lot 2 that just missed making the top pen at weaning. He is a larger framed individual with lots of performance and gained 3.74 lb./day on test. If you need to inject some feedlot performance, this bull is well suited to do the job. His flush sisters are feminine, angular and both settled AI in their inaugural breeding season. His pathfinder donor dam is one of our best cows!

Sackmann Solo 2023

Sackmann Solo 2044

This is another good representative of the Solo sire group. They are truly moderate framed cattle with extra rib shape and muscle expression. I really like the first Solo daughters in production. They are hard working little cows with excellent udders that out-produce themselves.

We start the Solo sire group with a calf I really like. He is among the youngest in our offering, but has performed well and looks the part. His pathfinder dam from the Ruby family is on the short list for consideration to enter our donor pen.

“Wide Load” is a fitting name for this beast! He packs serious pounds on a very moderate frame with an unbelievable amount of center mass and dimension. An excellent choice if you want to decrease mature cow size and improve fleshing ability. With his 152 IMF ratio he would be perfect for a grass finishing operation. I would like to use him on some of our heifers and will collect semen before delivery. Selling 1/2 Interest and Full Possession

hayter 0190 doUBle wide J20

Here is a good heifer bull that is a Double Wide grandson sporting a 112 ratio for ribeye. He is well built from the ground up with base width, square hip and big top. His dam is a full sister to Hayter Revolve E11, the top selling bull from our 2019 sale.

This calf really has a classy look with extra rib shape and should be safe to use on most heifers. His dam is a pretty little 549 cow with excellent udder quality. His sire did a good job for Tye Knebel and left some nice daughters in his herd.

If you like to go to basketball games in the winter like I do, this is the bull to use on your heifers. More substance than you would expect from a -4.5 BW bull. His dam is a full sister to Hayter Revolve E11, the top selling bull from our 2019 sale.

We sampled Connealy Emerald last year and were rewarded with some nice calves. This bull is expressive in his muscle pattern and could probably be used on heifers in the right situation.
