speaking of emanCipaTion… yawn?

Emancipation is a fantasy that has found its way to exposure. To attract attention, one can dance, one can sing, and sure one can yawn because the law of an illuminated spotlight is often a mystery – Recently, I have been getting quite a bit of media exposure with the visit of the Chinese president and his wife to the Netherlands. I must admit - having more exposure is kind of a bittersweet thing for me, honestly, because in my heart of hearts I much prefer good, quiet work in the shadows. Exposure makes you famous, not just good work. It is a fact whether you and I like it or not. Fame means you can say and do more to make an idea fly and go viral. In this long-awaited edition, XiN magazine has dedicated a significant part of it to the exciting phenomenon called China’s First Lady. Peng the style icon is able to turn every state visit into her red carpet moment – and it is not only her personal jubilation. As a fan puts it: “The First Lady gives our people a face”. It is China celebrating the fact that it has become a modern, perhaps more open country. Maybe my homeland is maturing in the skin of a maturing woman who has continued to grow. And what a breathtaking view to behold! Traditional beauty and international charm, these are the keywords to appreciate and decode the “soft power” diplomacy aiming to unite people all over the world. “Julie, it all starts with the desire to communicate and listen,” a Facebook friend wrote me the other day. I trust and sincerely hope that this is a way to celebrate our diversity and debate our differences without fracturing our global communities. To understand and accept an idea that is not ours. I applaud that. For me, this is true emancipation of a nation! China needs it. The Chinese people deserve it even more. We all wish to live in a more balanced world with equal rights and equal potential impact! Talking of equality, I suddenly realized something and wondered why nobody is writing about Barack’s or Xi’s sleeve length or shoe size if such things are so important in today’s world? I borrow Shakespeare’s words to bring an end to my musing: To this blessed plot, this earth! Happy Spring! Oh and please note that in order to encourage its correct pronunciation, I have slightly re-spelt my name. It is now: Julie Oyang

From Eindhoven to Beijing: diversity, optimism and confidence

BEijing dEsign wEEk The Beijing Design Week (BJDW) 2013 took place from September 26 to October 3 and has been an annual event since 2011, growing bigger every year. This year’s theme was ‘Design City · Smart City’. After Milan in 2011 and London in 2012, Amsterdam was this year’s ‘Guest city’ at the BJDW, with world-famous designer Marcel Wanders as its figurehead. Beijing’s Capital Museum showcased his work in a special exhibition focusing on Wanders’ iconic chair designs. Marcel Wanders himself said about his participation in the BJDW: “Visiting China is always an adventure and an inspiration, and it was an honor this year to be invited to represent the city of Amsterdam.” One Dutch contribution to the Beijing Design Week that drew a lot of attention, was the giant Rubber Duck, which had traveled to France, Brazil, Japan and Australia before it swam to Beijing. It is the world’s largest rubber duck and it was created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman. He aims to recall everyone’s childhood memories to ‘spread joy around the world’. For their part, Dutch designers explored the city of Beijing and interacted with people they met on the streets, inviting them to design

something themselves (more on that later). They spent a lot of time in the Dashilar area, one of the hotspots of the BJDW 2013. Top international and local designers, architects, academics and professionals had been invited to think through the regeneration of this historic district. It became a major draw during the BJDW, with a designer hutong toilet by Michael young, new restaurants and bars, and several renovation projects of the old hutong buildings. Other notto-be-overlooked BJDW sites were of course the 798 district and the adjacent 751-D park, as well as Caochangdi – areas well known among design aficionados any time of the year.

dutch dEsign wEEk When it comes to smart cities, the southern Dutch city of Eindhoven can teach anyone a thing or two: the city was named the world’s smartest region in 2012 by the Intelligent Community Forum, based in New york. Eindhoven is also, not coincidentally, the host of the annual Dutch Design Week (DDW). DDW 2013 took place from 19-27 October and welcomed 250,000 visitors, doubling the city’s population. One of the highlights every year is the graduates show of the Design Academy, where new talents strut their stuff. Around 200 new

morE information 请关注: students from all over the world annually start a bachelor’s or master’s program in design here. The Design Academy’s graduates show has been called ‘a guide for the future’. Some of the highlights were Benjamin Vermeulen’s ultra-portable, click-and-go magnetic MAG furniture, Danyu Wang’s ‘Air Story’ combining air purifier filters with the art of paper cutting, and Martijn van Strien’s dystopian outerwear. Another annual DDW hotspot is the Dutch Design Awards exhibition, which offers an overview of the finalists for the 2013 Dutch Design Award. This year’s winner was fashion designer Iris van Herpen with her Voltage collection. Fairphone by Bas van Abel won the Fontanel Public Award. Fairphones are made from conflict-free resources, against a fair wage for workers, while reducing e-waste. An interesting participant in the Design Awards exhibition was artist and designer Sander Wassink, who set up a temporary shoe-shop in Dashilar during Beijing Design Week, thus bringing the two design weeks together. In his shop, Wassink employed designers to cut and re-edit cheap, counterfeit shoes. The pieces were then creatively assembled by local Dashilar shoemakers, creating a new local pride as well as a fine example of Dutch-Chinese collaborative design.

China now ranks among the top wine producers and top consumers, has a growing number of quality wineries and, from the auction houses of Hong Kong to the chateau real estate markets of Bordeaux, exerts considerable influence as a buyer. Given that, it’s hard to believe that less than a decade ago many wondered if wine would catch on here and considered the idea of an industry based on quality to be a joke. To be fair, the amount of quality local wine amounts to a few cases out of the barrel of production, but at least the conversation has shifted from if China can make such wine to which ones are the best. And we see more of them now in Europe.

BEIJING-BASED JIM BOyCE IS FOUNDER OF THE BLOG GRAPE WALL OF CHINA AND CONTRIBUTOR TO WINE ENTHUSIAST, WINE BUSINESS INTERNATIONAL AND OTHER MAGAZINES.

The biggest splash came when seventeenth-century wine merchant Berry Bros. & Rudd in London listed Chateau Changyu Moser XV, a Cabernet-Merlot blend made in the north-central region of Ningxia, at €47. The wine is a joint project between Changyu, China’s biggest producer, and fifth-generation Austrian winemaker Lenz Moser. TxB, Moser’s import company, is the European importer and says the wine is listed at KaDeWe in Germany, Globus in Switzerland and Wein & Co in Austria, to name a few. There are also plans to introduce a second made-in-China wine to Europe – Moser Family Cabernet Sauvignon – ahead of the massive ProWein trade fair in late March. Meanwhile, the Merchant of Chinese Fine Wines in Belfast imports half dozen wines from well-regarded Shanxi province producer Grace Vineyard and says customers have been enthusiastic. The top label, Cabernet blend Chairman’s Reserve, is €48 while second label Deep Blue is €36. This importer also stocks “Golden Diamond” Vidal ice wine, made by Changyu in the northeast province of Liaoning, as does Excel Wines in Scotland. Excel Wines charges just over €200 for a half-dozen half bottles. And Inner Mongolia winery Chateau Hansen says three of its products are now distributed in Denmark and Germany by Nicolai Larsen Wines. Given that these China producers and others seem committed to staying on track, we can expect quality to improve and even more wines on European store shelves.

McKinsey report indicates that the gross domestic product of Changsha will triple between 2010 and 2025. Which is not surprising, since the city is producing what is most wanted and needed by the urban life: television programs and heavy machinery. The well-known local television network, Hunan TV, invented the immensely popular, American Idol sort of shows like Super Girl and Super Boy. Local companies such as Zoomlion and Sany have benefited greatly from China’s booming. The wine market is booming in China and owning expensive wine has become a symbol of happiness and social status. But Champagne, a unique, sparkling Champagne associated with luxury and power through the ages, has not yet received wide recognition and acceptance. “Compared to red wine, the acceptance of Champagne is still limited,” says Wang Wei, director of Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) in China. CIVC is the trade association in France that oversees the global Champagne market. One of CIVC missions in China is to promote the product and the stories behind the luxury sparkling wine. Currently, the annual production of Champagne is about 300 million bottles, of which 150 million bottles are sold worldwide. Only 1.3 million bottles of Champagne are sold in China in 2011, compare to 300,000 bottles sold in 2006. Half of the demand came from Shanghai. Officially presented to the Chinese market in 2006, Champagne is slowly becoming a widespread standard at festive occasions. However, market awareness is far below red wine. Most Chinese know that Lafite is one of the most expensive red wines in the world, but few can name the best Champagne in the world. Figures from the consultancy firm Euromonitor shows that a total of 1.3 billion liters of red wine were consumed in China in 2011. By comparison, Champagne consumption was only 900,000 liters in the same year.

In recent years, Champagne is often seen at weddings and parties. Newlywed couples pour Champagne down a graceful arrangement of glasses for a photo, but people prefer not to drink it. The taste is said to be unremarkable and a bit strange, especially elderly Chinese are not fond of cold wine with bubbles. The Chinese believe that red wine has positive effects on your health, like a cup of warm tea. This is perhaps attributable to the ancient belief in yin and yang and the balance of the two. They usually do not drink beverage under body temperature, while Champagne is served chilled. In Western countries, Champagne is consumed before a meal. In China, Champagne is served at bars and clubs in the evening. Many Chinese people believe that Champagne is for ladies and is not suitable for corporate parties.

ja Pa N is thE largEst chaMPagNE M arkEt iN a sia. Unlike the huge trading model employed by red wine merchants, Champagne producers and traders want to maintain a premium character. The price of red wine can drop extremely low whereas the price of Champagne has a bottom line. In a regular shop in China,

the cheapest Champagne is about 500 yuan ($ 80.26) per bottle and the price is set much higher in bars and clubs. Experts believe that the unusual taste of Champagne may be one factor that makes it less popular. Chinese people do not like the fizzing, sour taste; the sharp, fruity taste is relatively foreign to them. Meanwhile, the more mature red wine market encourages people to choose what they are more familiar with. “Red wine entered the Chinese market early. Drinking red wine has become common and fashionable for the locals,” a market insider tells us. “One way to make Champagne more acceptable is to add syrup to reduce its acidity, which offers great business opportunities to syrup companies including the French premium Monin syrup.” Wang Wei: “We have experienced significant growth over the past six years. We have high expectations for the market. Actually, we are looking forward to rising above Japan.”

is not a trend… it’s a lifestyle!

We should demand that what we wear is made with respect for people and our environment. And expect that couture is about amazing, creative handmade personalized designs of pure, natural fabrics. Let’s offer more platforms, like MINT at the Modefabriek Amsterdam for new innovative designers to inspire the world and build on their promising careers. Today the best designers create sustainable fashion, luxury is quality. We need unique, personal designs made with care. One of the things I find very important is to wear pure fabrics, wool, cotton, silk and I avoid clothing with artificial fabrics, synthetic fibers. While a lot of confection clothing is made of artificial fabrics because it’s cheaper,

it has a lot of disadvantages we are not aware of, synthetic fibers are highly flammable; not breathing causes static hair and is definitely not sustainable. The EcoChic Design Award is a sustainable fashion design competition challenging emerging fashion designers to create mainstream clothing with minimal textile waste. The 2013 cycle is open to designers in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, UK, France, Belgium and Germany. The winner is Karen Jessen of Germany, 1st runner up is Louise de Testa and 2nd runner up is Hong Kong designer Alex Law. Karen Jessen also won the Ecochic Design Award 2013 Special Prize Winner picked by renowned Artist, Sandy Lam.

any heads of state, including Chinese president Xi Jinping, will, when you read this, have met Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte prior to the third Nuclear Security Summit that was hosted by the Netherlands on 24-25 March. And while the media duly noted that Mr. Putin was not to attend the third Nuclear Security Summit, they hardly got beyond official disclaimers - just an agenda problem. Russia would be represented by its foreign minister. There wasn’t any profiling whatsoever of world leaders such as Chinese president Xi Jinping, who actually paid a 2-day state visit to the Netherlands, not to mention the fact that his wife Peng Liyuan, who accompanied him to The Hague, was then due to fly back to Beijing to receive Michelle Obama and family while their husbands, presidents of the two largest superpowers, met at the summit. So who is this Peng Liyuan, China’s new First Lady? Peng is her family name; Liyuan, meaning a beautiful woman, is her given name and pronounced Lee yu-an.

out of the ShadoWS One thing is for sure - it takes courage to step forward as First Lady in the People’s Republic of China. Peng Liyuan’s predecessor in that role was Jiang Qing, the notorious Madame Mao, Chairman Mao’s wife, who was an actress from 1930s’ Shanghai. In an environment where everything, including fashion, is perceived as a political statement, it was perhaps unsurprising that the wives of

subsequent leaders such as Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao chose to, or were asked to, stay in the shadows. Peng Liyuan, however, stepped forward to greet the world. She was known as a singer on TV well before her husband emerged as a politician. She is praised for her humility, her friendliness and her glamour. “Her influence means far more now,” a fan says. By combining traditional beauty with international charm “the First Lady gives our people a face”. On her Moscow trip in 2013, Peng created a minor sensation by wearing a very fashionable trench coat and carrying a cool handbag.

Many of Peng’s garments are designed by Ma Ke, an ‘anti-designer’ who prefers to use locally sourced, sustainable materials and who caters to a huge gay clientele in China and elsewhere. In 2008, Ma Ke was one of the laureates of the Dutch Prince Claus Award and indeed, Ms Peng Liyuan is above Michelle Obama on Vanity Fair’s 2013 Best-Dressed List.

NoN-poLitiCaL eVeNtS Last year, images of a young Ms Peng in uniform, singing to troops on Tiananmen Square in 1989 were hastily removed from the Internet, the censors no doubt realizing the damage they would do to her prestige in the West. And yet, the mere fact that Peng Liyuan’s public appearances are being monitored so closely by the authorities is one indication that China’s first lady is now embarking on what might be termed an experiment in public relations – and it looks like she’s doing an excellent job so far. At the same time, leaders and first ladies of the West seem to have changed their tune somewhat. Whereas Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush chided China’s leadership on tough issues like human rights during state visits, Michelle Obama plans to focus on education and cultural exchange. The encounter of these first ladies in March 2014 was characterized as a non-political event, meant to unite peoples rather than leaders – and there may well be some substance to the claim.

WorLd’S 100 moSt poWerfuL WomeN Both Peng Liyuan and Michelle Obama are highly popular at home for their glamour and superstar appeal. Both were on the Forbes list of the world’s 100 most powerful women. They share a common interest in education and health programs and promote their causes on international platforms. So on the face of it, there could be no better ambassadors for Sino-US soft power smoothing the way towards tough topics and diplomatic issues. And this goes beyond international relations. In China, parents of gay and lesbian children delivered a letter to China’s first lady, calling for legislation against gay discrimination and for increased tolerance of homosexuality. This was neither a hollow gesture nor just an outcry of despair. Peng is a WHO (World Health Organization of the UN) Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/Aids and served as its rector. And if one’s attire is a political statement in itself, then the significance of Peng wearing creations by Ma Ke, the mastermind behind Useless, a homegrown fashion design label, is not lost on the art crowds and gays across China, with whom Ma Ke is so popular.

reiNVeNtiNG herSeLf Skeptics may not have forgotten Peng Liyuan’s more questionable services to the Communist Party in the past but in a place like China, we have seen a tradition of poets being a crucial part of China’s long standing bureaucracy; emperors used to be calligraphers and renowned poets themselves, and Chairman Mao was certainly an ardent writer and proud to share his poetry with the literary circle of his time. Politicians are dedicated to the art of reinventing themselves, even though the re-invention must remain within limits. In this respect, Peng Liyuan perhaps less resembles Madame Mao than the notorious Cixi, the woman who ruled the Middle Kingdom in the last dynasty.

In a groundbreaking study, Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine who Launched Modern China, Jung Chang[1] puts a stop to decades of vilification by showing her readers how the Empress Dowager was in fact a prudent ruler and an astute and surprisingly moderate reformer who had to steer a safe course through the obstacles created by China’s many conservative, male bureaucrats. Jung Chang vividly portrays the political open-mindedness of a woman who outsmarted the men in power at the time. Peng Liyuan is no empress and if she is indeed outsmarting the men surrounding her, she takes good care not to show it. But if it’s true that she, like that 19th century first lady, has a knack for reinventing herself, then maybe there is hope. If public relations are her core business, she could have done worse than being an ambassador for WHO, supporting an independent fashion designer and drinking afternoon tea with Michelle Obama during nuclear summits. And if there is hope, I would like to hear something about it in the media!

ntil 2014, Henk Kool has worked for the government of the city of The Hague for 8 years. During his period in office, Mr. Kool has visited China 35 times, and he visited China 9 times in the year 2013 alone! Dutch media named him the “Chinese cabbage” – as his surname Kool means “cabbage” in Dutch. Despite a hint of irony, Kool is however the epitome of ever flourishing Sino-Dutch trade relation due to his genuine appreciation and the enjoyment derived from his work. In the past decade, the Netherlands wasn’t just China’s second biggest trade partner in the EU but also the EU’s third largest direct investor in China. In the meanwhile, the Chinese have become the fourth biggest ethnic minority in the Netherlands. Following Mr. Mark Rutte’s visit to China in the winter of 2013, Xi Jinping kicked off his state visit to the Netherlands in March 2014. According to Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands Chen Xu, this visit marks a few firsts. The first time a Chinese head of state visits the Netherlands since the establishment of diplomatic relations in the 1970s. The new Dutch king Willem-Alexander hosts a state visit for the first time since his enthronement in last April. Holland is the first stop of Xi’s European tour. The importance of President Xi’s visit seems clear. Kool: “That doesn’t surprise me. It is time to pay attention to Holland. For China, Holland can be the very gate to enter Europe!” On March 22nd, in the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, Willem-Alexander held a magnificent state banquet for President Xi Jinping, to which Henk Kool was invited. As the Dutch royal family only holds one of these four times a year, headlines hit Chinese media the next morning: “What kind of food did Xi eat during the state banquet?” “Why did Xi wear the modified Chinese tunic suit to meet the Dutch King?” “How did the Dutch queen and the Chinese first lady compare?” The small western European country used to have little attention but now firmly seized the Chinese eyeballs. Henk Kool: “The Netherlands is a main gateway to Europe. President Xi mentioned this clearly in his speech at the trade forum the day after the banquet. As Vice Mayor of the city of The Hague, I want to emphasize that Holland urgently needs China as a partner, this is exactly the reason why I chose to focus on China instead of other countries many years ago.”

small Gift Box, Big Dream: City, industry and Development Agriculture, energy, finance, and culture – these four fields contain quite a few industries in which the Netherlands and China share huge mutual interests.

industry. If Den Haag desires to be the gateway of the Netherlands for China, that is. Oil & gas, safety & security, ICT, and insurance - the four industries that form the key economic clusters of the city of The Hague. Kool has been pondering on how to attract Chinese investment, and from his experience he knows that Chinese enterprises tend to flock together: “Take Huawei, the large telecom provider and global player, takes the lead and opens an office in Den Haag, it is likely that a second, even a third, Chinese telecommunication company will follow this example.” “The Hague is a city that can be attractive for Chinese investors from an overall perspective. The industrial clusters contribute to a fairly international investment environment; coastal cities always have a good quality of life; many Chinese have gathered in The Hague for years, which led to an array of Chinese venues such as restaurants and wellness shops, and the soon-to-be-built KTV parlor. More importantly, “Chinese people tend to be close to power -especially political power- and Den Haag is the political center of the Netherlands.” After March this year, Henk Kool will retire from office. He expects his successor will continue and develop these collaborative relationships between the city of The Hague and China. “I myself will continue to promote business between the two countries…” President Xi looked easygoing and friendly. Kool says, memorizing the state banquet hosted by King Willem-Alexander. “Surrounded by his Chinese guards, the president walked towards the corner where I was standing. He saw the gift box that I held in my hand and then asked me in English: ‘Is it a gift for me?’” The gift box Henk Kool handed to President Xi included one photo book filled with pictures of Den Haag, as well as a painting of the Peace Palace. “I really hope he will have a chance to enjoy these gifts in the near future. He will fall in love with Den Haag!”

Xin’s kunming

Kunming, the capital city of yunnan province in southernmost China, certainly is up and coming. Chinese from all over this vast country are moving here to benefit from its milder climate, its cleaner air, its cuisine and above all, its future. Amid the constant cacophony of car horns and scooter alarms, Kunming’s rate of expansion is quite phenomenal. Some building sites seem to be working round the clock, seven days a week yet hundreds of high-rise buildings already dominate the skyline. A new railway currently under construction will link Kunming with Singapore, a total distance of 3,900 kilometers! No wonder then that Julie Oyang, XiN magazine’s editor-in-chief, spent some time here in February, exploring the future prospect and business opportunities in this vibrant city, the city of eternal spring. Kunming used to be one of the more difficult major cities in China for foreign businesses to invest. Getting things done in Kunming is still not as easy as it is in Shanghai or other boomtowns in China, but things seem to change for the better ~

Tokyo-based photographer and art director Michael Claxton was in Kunming for a few days and took these snapshots during his first visit to the city. Michael has travelled extensively around the world as a photographer and exhibited in Sweden and Japan. He is represented in the UK by Lebrecht Photo Library and in Japan by Amana Images and Niiyama’s Gallery. Visit Michael’s online presence www.facesandplaces.jp for more

harity and China: do they ever make a pair? Maybe the Western imagination, still studded with images of hardship – wandering peasants flooded out of homes, the man in front of the tank, and so on; not to mention European politicians on mission with their obligatory yet well-intentioned mantras regarding human rights – is lagging behind in this respect. And now that grumblings have been silenced by the country’s prodigal success, many still find it hard to picture China as a place for ordinary humans. The retina of the West is filled with huge high-rises, maglev-trains connecting Shanghai to its airport at 260 miles per hour, not to mention glittering buildings for the wealthy, now derelict. All fragments and figments of the truth, which is a tiny part of the huge and variegated truth called China, but a truth predicated by selection mechanisms going back a long way, adding up to the Dragon myth. Admittedly, Chinese intellectuals of the past have unwittingly contributed to this elaborate myth, which seems to make a volte face every other decade or so without losing its tenacity. One might say there is a subliminal connection between the ‘yellow Peril’ of fifty years ago and a windowless iron house painted by Lu Xun, an indestructible place where many people are fast asleep without knowing that they are dying of suffocation. Is it possible to help them, Lu Xun wonders, or will one only make them suffer unnecessarily by intervening?

pioNeeriNG China isn’t just a backward bureaucracy gone futuristic overnight, though it’s that too in part. Next to hypermodern manufacturing firms geared to profit, social entrepreneurship blooms. While heavy industries keep billowing fumes in places like North-Eastern Anshan, the country has taken the lead in “soft” technology, solar energy and what not. Unhampered by decades of political correctness with all its concomitant into-the-box thinking, pioneering spirits, monitored by the China University of Mining and Technology in Xuzhou embarked on sustainable coal-mining. Ever since the dawn of Imperial China, thousands of years ago, subsequent dynasties saw themselves confronted with the gigantic and never-ending task of feeding, clothing and housing its everincreasing millions. It couldn’t afford to proceed cowardly in the process. And while many paid with dear life when experiments – we recall Mao’s Great Leap Forward – lapsed in catastrophe, this bold attitude, hallowed by tradition as it were, now proves proficient and profitable in “soft” and “green” enterprises. It’s time that sustainable technology and the business of giving replace good old charity.

SoLar CooKer One Earth Designs is a small firm developing sustainable products. It started on a non-profit basis. Nowadays it makes big money with a solar cooker weighing just about 20 kilograms, converting sun

energy into the heat needed to boil a liter of water in ten minutes. Target customers are residents in the impoverished rural areas of western China, where electricity is scarce. Besides, all over China some 700 million people still use solid fuels at home, which, needless to say, lays a heavy stress on the environment. Catlin Powers, co-founder of One Earth, realized that a non-profit basis wouldn’t suffice; the need for such a cooking device was too massive: “In the process of working on community projects we realized that in order to reach all the people who have this need we would have to scale in a big way.” By going up-scale, One Earth could involve the government in the enterprise. The firm will sell solar cookers to the government, which will then subsidize them for rural villagers.

meaNWhiLe, iN hoNG KoNG According to Forbes magazine total giving by China’s top 100 philanthropists has plunged by 41% leaving social entrepreneurs to pick up the slack. In traditional Chinese culture, the elderly were revered for their wisdom and contribution to their community. After decades of raising children and working to support the family, they used to be able to look forward to their golden years of being pampered by the younger generation. But because flats in the cramped city of Hong Kong are notoriously tiny and residents tend to work long, grueling hours, many senior citizens ended up in nursing homes, instead of being cared for by family members. In the 1990s the government gradually stopped subsidizing care for the elderly through non-profit organizations because of the high cost. As a result, privately run group homes, often offering

a lower quality of care, became widespread. And many seniors found themselves in homes of substandard level. This led two social entrepreneurs, Legward Wong and Jeff Ng, to set up a service to match senior citizens with nursing homes based on their requirements. The astonishing thing about the business model was that seniors weren’t paying for it. It was the nursing homes that were charged for each successful placement. This business model, unknown in Hong Kong a decade ago, became the basis for one of the city’s earliest successful social enterprises. Today, the company has a staff of 40 people and works with almost half of Hong Kong’s 600 nursing homes. Which is but one example of “sustainable profits”.

When Jackie Chan isn’t making movies, he is very busy working to help other people, especially children. Jackie has been involved in charity work for 24 years, establishing his Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in 1988. In October 2004, Jackie founded the Dragon’s Heart Foundation to help children and the elderly in poor and remote areas of China. The Dragon’s Heart Foundation builds schools in these areas and gives aid to the elderly and handicapped. Jackie has taken many trips to remote areas of China to bring supplies and most of all to bring love and support to poor children and the elderly. There are many children who don’t have enough money to go to school and Jackie wants to help them get an education. He uses money collected through the Dragon’s Heart Foundation to help the children. But do you wonder where Dragon’s Heart gets donations from? They get money from people like you; people who just want to help kids who want to go to school. Jackie collects the money and then builds the schools! So far the Foundation has built two dozen schools and elderly residences in Guizhou, Xichang, Shandong, Erdos, Changchun, and yanbian. After the May 12, 2008 earthquake in Sichuan, Jackie promised to use money from the Dragon’s Heart Foundation to help rebuild schools in the devastated areas. In August 2006 when Jackie came back from a Dragon’s Heart charity mission to Guizhou, China, he thought of a fun way for you to help poor children go to school. The project is called Build a School For a Dollar. you may wonder how anyone - even Jackie - could build a whole school for a dollar. Of course no one can. But if you put your dollar together with someone else’s dollar and a whole bunch of other dollars, you could have enough money to build a school! As an added bonus, Jackie has promised to match your donation. That means if you donate a dollar, Jackie will donate a dollar. If you donate ten dollars, Jackie will donate ten dollars. Over the past six years, fans have donated more than US $96,000 and Jackie has matched this donation for a total of over US $192,000, enough to build several schools in poor and remote areas of China. The project continues.

A surrealistic scene: several brides, dressed in traditional white or in gala red with their bridegrooms at their side. In the sweltering hot night, amidst the heavy traffic on Waibaidu Bridge, they are being photographed by a small crew.

What iS happeNiNG? It is the latest trend in Shanghai. you pay a handsome fee to make wedding pictures and risk your life. It is forever rush hour here. Even when the lights turn green, it is an achievement to cross the road. Bicycles, motorcycles and cars, all driving on the pavements. Pedestrians don’t seem to mind at all. Aren’t there any traffic rules, one wonders? There are, but those are general guidelines and most of all they are meant for others. In Chinese culture, risks are a way of life. Rules and regulations are not taken seriously as they are in countries such as the Netherlands where “uncertainty avoidance” is high – one of the dimensions pointed out by Geert Hofstede, guru on cultural differences.

Chinese are comfortable with ambiguity. They are flexible and entrepreneurial, and we all know what that has led to! Bend like bamboo. If you have a problem, take your time to wait, and it may become a small problem. If you wait a little longer, it may even go away! The pictures of a house in the middle of a highway, or a grave mount in a shopping mall, or a lonely, left behind car in a demolished parking lot, they all give an excellent example of how flexibility works in China. If the problem cannot be moved, move around it! That doing business in a society like this is very different from doing business in the West won’t be a surprise. For instance, when a contract is only a show of good intentions, how can you have any certainty? The answer is guanxi – personal relations. Trust and understanding are created and maintained through forming friendships and alliances. Rules and regulations, contracts and laws, they are only there ‘in name’, a piece of paper. Personal relations lie at the fundament of a society. The only certainty one has in life is one’s relationship with others. This is why professor Hofstede calls China a collectivistic society, where highly individualistic behavior is visible on the surface. Grabbing a taxi right in front of someone else is acceptable, so is skipping queues, but also singing or dancing in a park or mall, wearing pajamas on the street, having a dog wearing a negligee and eating in a restaurant. Nobody looks surprised, the individual is accepted and in fact: anything goes! There seems to be a certain tolerance for funny, shameless behavior. How to deal with these paradoxes? It comes down to dealing with a totally different culture than your own: intercultural competence. This starts with knowledge of the other culture, then acceptance

and eventually appreciation. Be flexible in thinking and never let differences ‘get you’. And if in the end explanations cannot be found, accept them and enjoy the surprise that anything goes. And smile.

Goodbaby Utrecht is a thriving hub of innovation, part of a global network of the firm’s research & development. Goodbaby Utrecht may be a designer’s dream. But where is the madness? The unusual things? What could be more homely, more comforting and safetyprone than walkers, bouncers and tricycles? This insistence on madness at the designer’s end reminds one of attempts to shoot horrormovies with Teletubbies using their products. Which, were it to be executed, would entail quite an amount of out-of-the-box thinking indeed. Some of that glorious madness surfaces when Mei Mei reveals the wellsprings of her fancy. To her, Gaudi’s convoluted mosaics and fairytale visuals, rustic rather than rational, are as inspiring as

the spirited simplicity of Naoto Fukasawa, famous for his CD-player perched on a wall. Isn’t there a giant chasm between these masters? I may be wrong. However disparate, these extremes share an intuitive approach; and it’s this feature, injected by a Steve Jobs-like drive, that made Goodbaby a global player ever since it launched that stroller for the Chinese market in the year 1989.

upCYCLiNG An industry dedicated to the happiness of babies of future generations will readily commit itself to “green” products and manufacturing methods. Goodbaby eagerly embraced and absorbed a seminal idea launched in 2002, Cradle to Cradle – better known as C2C. It builds on older ideas of recycling and sustainability, but focuses not so much on limiting damage done to the environment as it adds value to used products. Upcycling – as founding fathers McDonough and Braungart were pleased to call it. The duo proved their point by erecting a car factory on a toxic spot – cleaning and purifying it while producing those sustainable cars on top. Whether Goodbaby will acquire environmental fame remains to be seen, but unassuming strollers equipped with car brakes are here to stay. Madness or not, the firm sure built itself a future.

In overseas markets, strategic partnerships have been established with local distributors as well as world-famous brands including Quinny, Bebécomfort, Mothercare and Maxi Cosi. Over 300 professionals worldwide put their expertise in market research, product design, process technology and research proper, combining efforts to put customer demands and infants’ needs on the central stage. All serves these objectives; there’s no counterproductive cross-purposes or hidden agendas, or so it seems. Maybe that is Goodbaby’s secret, part of the madness even? There’s a seamless connection between technical improvements and awareness of fashion, between design and mass consumption. Ever since the company started, it obtained more than five thousand patents, a staggering amount, including 166 invention patents by December 2012. With Research & Development branches in Hong Kong, Boston, Utrecht and Japan, the firm launches 400 new or upgraded products a year, and in 2010, 2011 and 2013 Goodbaby won Red Dot Awards, the designer’s equivalent of an Oscar.

ingapore back in 1991 was a Confucian society with rigid mandates for what you could do and could not say. The island has been an economic miracle since 1819 when the Colonial British created a free port; but now the powers that be wanted to fashion a modern Sparta, to build a well-drilled society with the might of old Venice. It was against this stifling backdrop that a whole generation like myself began to grow our hair longer, and to dream of something different – I was first seduced by the crank of electric noise at the age of 12. It was a lazy day when my mum wasn’t screaming at my dad that my sister came home with a cassette tape sporting longhaired guys on the cover. Things were never quite the same after that. It was like passing through Alice’s door into a neon black wonderland; one laced with alcoholic fever coursing through black ink lined broken skin, where spikes scar guitar wood and high storm boots trail to short leather skirts while Eros blooms as ethereal flowers of cigarette smoke and dried up hash, whiffing through wormholes in ripped jeans.

We are talking about a world hidden beneath a glittering skyline famed for its eugenic experiments and rightwing laws. Skid Row’s Slave to the Grind blasted out of our portable walkmans on the bus to school while after class hours became whiskey marathons, paced to the beat of Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails. And before you knew it, everyone was writing music, believing that they could change the world, even from a cultural wasteland like Singapore. For a while, it seemed like revolution was underway. John Peel began spinning “Made in Singapore” music on British airwaves, labels invested millions to groom the next big hit. The Substation, one of Singapore’s few Art spaces, became our rock and roll Mecca as hundreds descended onto its shady plaza every weekend to listen to other Singaporeans sing out against our imperfect society. But as quickly as it started, it faded away... It was subtle, part of growing up, some would say. We began exchanging our spiked leather bands for Rolexes and Panerais; our stomper boots for luxury rides and Xeroxed gig posters for spreadsheets.yet strangely, like tattoos that wouldn’t fade, we never forgot our lessons against the hierarchy.

Today, many of who stood with me in leathers, now stand unique in what they do. They challenge processes and the norms while others bridge divides where East and West meet across the globe. But that world we have left still exists in Singapore today; a curious mirror to the magnificent capital of pragmatism that the island is. Maybe both will be one someday as the 21st Century reconciles individuality with capitalism to maximum profit. It begs the question: Were we as special as we thought? On hindsight, I suspect we were part of the social experiments that were going on. Perhaps we were lab rats in a bid to create conflicting, yet complimenting narratives.

Isn’t that what productive creativity is all about? For those who think of Singapore as a multi-cultural society: they must also understand that herein exists a unique duality that has tempered each of us. And perhaps that is the triumph of the Lion City, where like the matrix, it creates viruses that would test the system and then refine the steel. And so, the current generation will be forged as we were once.

he first time I traveled to Hong Kong was in January 1989. I was accompanying a mission of Dutch traders to the Toys and Games Fair and I was very excited. Back then, Cathay Pacific did not offer a direct flight from Amsterdam to Hong Kong so we had to fly to Frankfurt with Lufthansa first. At the German airport, we transferred to Cathay Pacific’s brand new 747-400.

and town, the bustle of the red taxis, the many buses and the porters. One thing I noticed on our way to the old Lee Garden’s hotel in Causeway Bay was how busy the traffic was, and how many pedestrians were milling on the streets. The neon lights above the streets were blazing and hundreds of shops, large and small, offered their wares.

By January 1989, I had been working as a press officer for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Benelux office in Amsterdam for 9 months. To be honest, before March 1988 I did not know much about Hong Kong either, and even less about the Trade Council. I was a press officer at the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam when someone told me about the job opportunity at the TDC Benelux Office. For the job interview I went to the HKTDC located on Prinsengracht 771. I was received by Mrs. Willy Holmes, the TDC Director for the Benelux.

It was great. I fell in love with Hong Kong immediately and this love affair is still far from over.

Mrs. Holmes explained that the TDC was a semi-government organization and its goal was to promote Hong Kong’s external trade worldwide. She mentioned that the TDC organized trade fairs and published product magazines for various sectors such as Apparel, Toys, Gifts and Electronics. The TDC also joined and organized trade events abroad, promoting products from Hong Kong. The press officer, she said, was in charge of writing and sending out press releases about the HKTDC activities, maintaining relations with the Benelux media, inviting journalists to visit Hong Kong and organizing seminars. Looking at my CV, Mrs. Holmes remarked: “I see you have been working for the Netherlands Information Service in The Hague as a press officer and that you accompanied the Royal Family on official visits. What makes you suitable for the job we offer?” I explained to Mrs. Holmes that being one of the press officers of the RVD meant you had to be flexible, be able to talk to people from all walks of life and hold your ground in meetings with very senior people. you also had to be strong enough to keep photojournalists at a certain distance at official functions, write concise press releases and willing to work long and hard. The fact that I, at that time, was married to a Chinese born in America apparently swung the balance in my favor and I was offered the job and a desk in a dungeon-like room at the back of the office. Nine months later I was aboard a Cathay Pacific jumbo approaching Kai Tak airport. Through the window I saw the buildings of Kowloon and the hills getting closer and closer. The flaps were extended and the landing gear lowered. When the aircraft seemed to scrape the roofs, it made a 90-degree turn to the right, touched down on the runway in the port and came almost to a stop before taxiing to the gate. My heart still pounding from the excitement, I realized I was in Hong Kong, the then British Crown Colony. A Chinese colleague of the HKTDC met us when we entered the arrival hall of Kai Tak airport and escorted us to the bus. Outside, I had my first real impression of Hong Kong. The smells of the port

s we are approaching the festive season in different parts of the world, many of us are looking forward to going back to our homes, the places that are important to us and our family. Be it Christmas or the Spring Festival, festive events ignite temporary migrations that strain our transport networks to the max. Even the slightest blizzard can leave people stranded at airports and train stations for days. We have all been there, waiting in queues, paying high prices and enduring days of travel.

WhY do We put up With aLL the haSSLeS aNd aNNoYaNCe? I think the answer lies in the simple realization that we humans need, more than food and water, a place to live. We all know that the love and affection that we hope to be immersed in during the holidays is something that nourishes and feeds our soul. Love refuels and keeps us going. For many, “home” is also the place where they root. The family home where their parents live, where they grew up. It is a place that they carry in them as an essential part of their identity. Although in these days of globalization, there is a growing group of people that is footloose and makes the entire earth planet their home, the vast majority of us value being rooted and being connected to a place of origin, to our home. The unprecedented

migratory move from the countryside to the city that is currently taking place in China has profound consequences in this respect. As many millions of people are leaving their place of origin to make new lives in the big city, they are literally uprooted, and they try to re-root in a new city where they arrive. However, the needs and requirements for them to do so are too often underestimated by those who take responsibility for creating these new cities. Just like plants, people need the right conditions to grow roots. Too often we find the new city environment offers the newcomers insufficient opportunity to establish a sense of community, a human scale and common spaces to meet and get to know their fellow citizens and neighbors. This commitment is not only necessary but also crucial to nurture a sense of belonging. If we can create just the right conditions for these vital factors to jumpstart this new identity, a sense of belonging and pride of a place, then the new cities can become places to be called home. A place where we want to return to, time and again. After all, a city could not and should not just be a commodity. It is a community. A community is a cooperative spirit in which people can participate. People of all ages and from all walks of life feel they are a part of a harmony, in which elderly people and children’s play can take the central stage. This is a community that is in balance with its surroundings and the landscape it is being built on. If we can take into account these principles in founding the new cities of China, the inhabitants of new metropolitan China can begin to truly love their new cities. Together with our loved ones, we humans show a remarkable capacity for creating a home in almost any circumstance. Therefore, lending a helping hand in order to create a strong, well-founded sense of identity for the many new cities and communities that are yet to be built is most vital, even imperative, especially in our age of mass urbanization. Because after all, there is great truth in the old saying: Home is where the heart is.

Amsterdam was developing into the center for trade and Dutch political power. Anna paused to gaze into her deep, generously sized garden, the symbol of her family’s power and wealth. The evergreen hedges and hundreds of flower bulbs looked magnificent in the season. Afterwards, Anna left for the coach house at the other side of the garden.

The Van Loon family was proud of their large number of carriages! Carriages played a key part in 17th century life not only because they provided a means of transport. They also served as a status symbol. The carriages of the Van Loons were emblazoned with the coat of arms. In the afternoon, one of the carriages would bring Anna to the bookstore in the city center, where she could buy a nice present for the Mayor’s wife. Anna’s husband Hans was governor of the East India Company, and in the evening the couple was going to have dinner with the Mayor of Amsterdam whose daughter was married to one of their sons.

On a recent initiative of Hans and the Mayor, an expedition to the Far East would be undertaken to buy silk, porcelain and spices, such as pepper. As usual the men would talk about business during dinnertime, while the wives would update each other on the latest gossips. The guests were entertained in the dining room and meals were served in white Chinese porcelain brought from an earlier expedition – The 17th century was the so-called Golden Age, during which time the Lowlands flourished and the Dutch nation played a major

After Italy, France, Spain and the US, China is currently the fifth largest wine producing country in the world. It won’t take long for China to take over the fourth position. China is an incredible big country with a huge variation of soil types and climates, therefore it is easy for us to believe that China is highly suitable for the production of wine. In reality the conditions for making quality wine in China are not as prosper as one might expect. In huge parts of the country where temperature is the most suitable for wine production, there is a critical amount of rainfall during summer and fall season; the worst possible conditions to make wine. For drier conditions we have to move north, but then the climate becomes colder, too cold. Although summers here are good, the frost hits in early, around harvest time. Far from ideal either.

marKetiNG WiNe VerSuS terroir WiNe When traveling in China last year, I visited the international acclaimed and highly successful winery Grace Vineyard in China’s central Shaanxi province, a corner of the country better known for coal production than wine making. The owner is Judy Leissner, a Chinese woman from Hong Kong who is married to a German guy. My visit was at the end of the harvest period, it became pretty clear to me what challenges wine producers face in the so-called colder growing areas. Upon arrival we could see that frost had already hit the region; leaves were dark-brown and damaged and fallen off in part. Grace’s staff was harvesting, some others were already pruning the vines, something you would have preferred to do three to four months

later. Another team was putting the pruned vines flat to cover them with earth in order to protect them from the big frost yet to come. If the vines are not covered properly, they will freeze to death. In spite of the difficult weather conditions, the wines we tasted were rather good. Her team tries to respect the “terroir”, in the meantime these are technical wines, mainly made in the wine cellar.

teChNiCaL WiNeS In general, the grapes that are harvested lack sugar and need to be “chaptalized” by adding sugar. At the same time, acid is added too, due to low natural acidity. To get rid of excessive water as a result of showers during the harvest, inversed osmosis is put into practice. Finally, several cultivated yeasts are used to stimulate fermentation and to provoke/activate certain flavor components in the grapes. To add body and roundness to the wines, glycerin and Arabic gum are often used. Here we talk about one of the country’s finest wineries, where they are trying to make top quality wines. To do so however, they need to intervene a great deal in the wine making process. Other wineries focusing on making cheap volume wines just blend their local produce with a foreign wine to lift the final quality. Chinese government hardly interferes in these practices. Producers can add 50% or more of cheap Chilean, South-African or Spanish wine and still declare it’s a local Chinese product.

Three major local producers and brands are Great Wall, Dynasty and Changyu. They have more than 50% of the total market share. Some of the top wines they produce are consumable, but most of them taste awful, like cough syrup.

ambitioN Although the Chinese are not yet big wine lovers, an increasing number of them do drink it. Chinese government stimulates this trend. They have several reasons for it. The Chinese drink a fare amount of alcohol per year, mainly strong alcohol made of corn, cereals and rice. The 50-60% alcohol is bad for your health, additionally it is made of grains that the Chinese government would rather have for food consumption. With a population of over 1.3 billion people, food is a major issue in China. Grape vines grow in regions where there is no competition relating to local food production. Nevertheless, despite its ambition, China will have difficulty making quality wines on a bigger scale. On the other hand, the Chinese learn fast. A growing number of foreign investors are entering the market. Big investments have already been made by global players such as Domaine Baron de Rothschild, Moët Hennessy (LVMH) and the Spanish company Torres. These companies strongly believe in the Chinese future.

i’an is famous for the nearby Terracotta Army, but at the heart of this ancient walled city lays another attraction: a sprawling network of streets and alleys known as the Muslim Quarter. Built around China’s oldest Mosque, the Great Mosque of Xi’an, the neighborhood has for centuries been home to the Hui, Chinese Muslims. Islam came to China through the silk road, and still finds its home right at the center of the silk road’s last stop: Chang’an, nowadays known as Xi’an. Although some of the streets have been taken over by tourist shops, there is still plenty of authenticity to be found, especially the street food sold during the daytime. In the early morning, bakers and butchers prepare for the day ahead, early risers drink their first cup of tea, and breakfast of all varieties is on offer. Other kinds of food make their way to the side of the street when it’s lunchtime, and it will be well past midnight when the last barbecue closes up...

Back in 1986, Randall Dark was given the opportunity to view High Definition in Toronto. Dark knew immediately it was the future of images. This was the historic Canadian HDTV production Chasing Rainbows, a miniseries that aired over the CBC in standard NTSC. Dark later moved to New york City to work with David Niles, another HD pioneer. The urge to strike out on his own led him to Irving, Texas where his production company HD Vision was headquartered in 1992. Recognizing early on that HD needed to go Hollywood, he moved his company to Los Angeles in 2002. Randall Dark and his upbeat message for emerging technologies rather seduced me – not a Luddite but one of the confidently surviving tech-illiterate majority – to examine the overall conditions of the HD industry from Randall’s two decades long multimedia perspective.

maKe a differeNCe! g What does Randall Paris Dark stand for? Are you a follower? Are you a leader? Randall: “When young people ask my piece of advice on career options, I would always say ‘Go Big or Go Home’. My instinctive voice says: Do not be afraid of technology. Embrace change; be ahead of emerging global trends. I want to be on the frontier of major changes. This is a historic moment; we are making history.” “Being a successful artist is also being an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship means extreme responsibility. And the responsibility for me is perhaps not to make money but to make a difference. Re-define geographical borders and go out to meet the most enthusiastic audiences from around the world! This vision of mine asks flexibility and openness. Art is about the reinvention of timeless beauty but it is also about that we should do something good for our society.” For some content creators, the explosion of recording formats and devices is a chaotic maelstrom. But for HD veteran Randall Dark, it’s like diving into a Chinese banquet of options and possibilities, each providing unique opportunities to bring evocative video and audio to the screen.

from Life maSK to a diSh that WouLd maKe SouNd “My life mask was made around 1989, this picture was take a few months ago,” Randall carries on, digging into his memory bank. “The sunglasses have an HD camera in them that I used in my new feature documentary. I had my protagonist wearing them so I could edit to his eyes and we could all share his exact point of view…” Which is great news. Masks deal with very delicate emotions. The stories ain’t finished putting up a mask! Dark’s technological tour de force started in the same year “thething-is-to-discover-which-way-we’re-going” Daphne Du Maurier died, the English author and playwright best known for the Hitchcock adaption of her novel Rebecca. I’ve been thinking… For all I know, Dark loves two things: technology and storytelling. “Actually…three. I like cathartic emotion, I started my career by writing, directing and producing theatre in Canada,” the life mask answers quietly. Right. I’m dealing with someone who seems to be interested in ultimate communication. A quick leafing through Dark’s past life files, mostly from the predigital, petroleum smelling newspaper ink age, brought these yellowed sound bites to the present: “…packed with more insight concerning the world”, “Sex provides the dominant motif for Randall Dark’s Starboy, oh the thrill of it all!”, “Dark…spends his nights writing and directing local

productions, has come up with a play idea that’s just waiting for an audience to shape plot and dialogue as well as devise an ending”. The man who intended to give the participants the final say, even if he disagreed with the aesthetics of their approach. This all in an era without social media and interactive digital platforms channels directly linking, connecting and involving… Engaging an audience, the means justify the end. The time travel to the past gives insight to Dark’s forward-looking ride back to the here and now – More than three decades later, Randall Dark, now “wicked smart, award winning cinematographer, director, producer, writer, and manipulator”, received 8 Festival Selections and a Best Director nomination for his current film, a feature documentary with the working title of Seadrift vs. the Big Guy. The documentary is made on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the world’s toughest canoe race (260 miles no stops) and pushed the limit of format possibilities by combining footage shot on over 20 different types of camera technology. The combination of video formats from Go-Pros to HD eyewear to ultra-high definition is impressively successful, demonstrating that source material can come from any perspective, both subjectively from the participants and objectively from observers. Seadrift vs. The Big Guy, a landmark in the future potential of documentary filmmaking, the first seed of idea was grown in a Canadian theatre. By demonstrating the unlimited potential of multiple video formats, his feature documentary allows the point of view of those directly experiencing the event to become as important as the cinematography of the filmmaker. Randall: “It’s a matter of using the best tool at hand to record as many facets of the experience as possible.” The multisource documentary is very much like a video game battle, now for real. As much as he is parading his armory from his past 27 years shooting experiences, from the earliest HD and digital device to more recently, the BlackMagic Cinema Camera, Randall Dark’s documentary about his brother, the tremendous contemporary visual artist Shayne Dark, is concise, lean, restrained and… shattering, literally. One of the featured installation sculpture pieces was made from laminated stylistic curving shattered glass piece. As the artist talks about sound, his sculpture is making sound. This pretty much reminds me of a famous Sichuan dish called guoba, the crispy rice cake. The story goes that the artist/cook wanted to make a dish that would be gorgeous but humble enough in order to impress the emperor, who was travelling incognito through his province. A dish that would make sounds! All-round sensory experience is the key. It is a contemporary thought, a Dark vision. The creator being the channel of things unsaid and unseen… But –

hoLdiNG a rare fLoWer iN maCau g Perhaps I’m detouring to ask the cosmic purpose of capturing a massive tragedy in high definition? Aren’t we getting a little too cynical here? Or do you believe that this haunting, magical sadness that speaks straight to the heart and strikes silence is the completion of beauty? Are we writing a lie? Will the intimacy of HD teach us to be kinder? I’m machine-gunning my target with question marks. “I believe that images change the world; moving images change the soul,” he pauses to think. “HD technology can change lives, like the starving kids I was filming in the Dominican Republic. When we see poor children that are starving and we tell stories about them and then when you see their story on our 4K ultra high definition television, I think it’s going to touch your heart in a way that it’s never been touched before.” So why did he choose to hold a Film Festival in Macao, China, I wondered.

Seadrift vs. The Big Guy “There are many film festivals around the world that allow top filmmakers to showcase their work. Film festivals are also opportunities for up-and-coming filmmakers to find an audience and to speak about their innovative new approaches to an established crowd. I wanted to start a film festival that would offer those things and also introduce the latest technology and vision cast the future. Not just HD and Film but 3D and now 4K and beyond. I believe we should share our creative and technical ideas with each other. I believe we should strive to create opportunities for each other. Co-productions are now more important than ever.” “As I thought about where to place a festival such as this, China seemed a perfect fit. It’s exotic and virtually untouched by these kinds of creative gatherings. I wanted not only to be able to bring the best filmmakers to China, but I also wanted to offer the Chinese an opportunity to participate in the excitement and creative expression of a film festival.”

“Macao truly is one of the most amazing cities in the world; top hotels, fantastic restaurants mixed with a rich and historic past. Within a few minutes, festival attendees can travel from the bright lights of a Las Vegas-type setting to a historically amazing area in old Macao. It’s imperative that the host city of any festival also acts as a catalyst to inspire, enrich and enhance the experience. Macao is the perfect fit.”

…So, I think it’s fair to say that Randall Dark has made an art form of the new technology. The Dark diction has become, not an addiction, but a refreshing mindset. What about Stone Forest?

hina’s success is inexplicable to denizens of old economies, not because there is any mysticism to the Chinese soul – assuming such a thing exists – but because it is based on a new business model. When the country opened up in 1992, the same year Fosun was founded, China’s economy was huge to be sure. Tough and surprisingly resilient as it was, it was however not strong and powerful the way it is today and remains strong and powerful during global recession. One may wonder what is the secret behind this overnight blossoming. Perhaps, after all is being said, we have to believe that in 2014 China isn’t merely about creating profits. China is about creating value.

famiLY To the envious and enthusiastic eye of the outsider, profits and value look similar, if not identical. After all, value cannot be created in any sustainable way without the dough that goes with it. Fosun Group makes a lot of dough and is quite a presence at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It has dealt in steel and mining, and deals in insurance, industrial operations, investment and asMR. GUO PRACTISING TAICHI

OFFICE INTERIOR

set management – just as any multinational corporation in the West does. And yet Fosun Group is based on a different footing. As Mr. Guo Guangchang, co-founder of Fosun Group has it: “Investment, which is one of our core concerns today, means creating profitable and sustainable opportunities for our global partners. However, to be of any use to our partners overseas, we had to build a solid base in China first.” Guo was one of a group of four students. When asked whether they are still friends, Guo raises his eyebrows in mock-reproach. “Of course we are friends. It’s not merely stories and memories we share of our university years. We are business partners within Fosun and we are lucky because we have been very close friends till this day. The paths our lives and careers took vary somewhat; what binds us is that we started Fosun from scratch and put all our effort in it. We are family, you see.” This is where the values come in, as well as the creation of value. “We cherish the concept of the ‘Fosun Family’. We make an effort to create synergies across our invested industries, media and distribution resources.

SeLf-improVemeNt aNd teamWorK Learning and improvement is not only the tenet for every Fosun employee but also for the company as a whole. Which obliges the company itself to allow room for perfection at all levels. For an enterprise to grow, a unified team is essential. It takes a great team as well as a strong corporate culture to make miracles happen. Synergy, harmony, cooperation – those seem to be key concepts. After 20 years of cooperation, Fosun’s co-founders have withstood the test of time and set a prime example for its teamwork culture. Which is one reason why performance is unequivocally defined as value creation. To be truly competitive, an enterprise must maintain its vitality. It continuously needs to create more value in an ever-changing business environment. In the course of its 22-year existence, Fosun became a big player on rapidly expanding Chinese consumer markets. In 2010 it harvested the results of this tremendous effort to go global, acting as a partner or go-between for foreign investors.

SoCiaL iNVeStmeNt Becoming a strong enterprise apparently entailed ‘soft-core’ byproducts such as charity. Investment in people and society for a sustainable growth – things that tend to be regarded as extras in the West. Here, however, they seem core business.

Mr. Guo: “While pursuing commercial values, Fosun also actively devoted itself to the improvements of China’s natural environments, the rejuvenation of the country’s economy and Chinese culture. Making the world feel more about the vitality of China’s enterprises and the charisma of Chinese culture!” In 2011, Fosun made a donation to Fukushima rescue forces. The company organized the China Momentum, Fosun’s Night, a largescale branding activity in the U.S., and sponsored cultural activities in collaboration with the Musée Du Louvre in France. Fosun Group also supported national intangible cultural heritages, which help protecting and promoting Wu Opera and Dongyang woodcarving. During its 20 years of development, Fosun has had a thanks-giving mind, adhered to the core corporate values of “self-improvement, teamwork, performance and contribution to society”. It has shared its success with its employees and society. A European mind might wonder whether all this ado is simply window dressing? Guo: “Indeed, charity reminds Westerners of a past that has long gone, but for me social business investment is exactly the opposite. It is our primary investment. Cumulatively, Fosun has invested about 100 million U.S. dollars in this line of business, which included the funding for poor students. Like I said, Fosun also supports and promotes the arts and crafts of the traditional Chinese culture. And

the Fosun charity fund, Fosun Foundation, went official in 2012. We realized early that we must attach great importance to social responsibility in the creation of economic value, and by doing so we create more social value and build better partnerships with foreign investors. “Chinese civilization has a long history and is one of the world’s oldest civilizations; it is the world’s longest continuous civilization. Up until now, Chinese culture affected life in all its nooks and crannies. Skeptics say China has become a materialist country par excellence. I believe Chinese culture is pervasive, and it has a long history. We support Chinese traditional arts, which of course does not stop us from studying modern methods that help foster our heritage. Fosun Group has a cultural mission.”

phiLoSophY & CLub med In 1989, Guo received his BA in Philosophy from Fudan University. “Philosophy tells us that the quest for knowledge is part of our human nature: we learn from ourselves. The essence of knowledge is sharing!” Mr. Guo explains. “It is my belief there is such a thing as ecology of business revolving around the taking of responsibilities for the world beyond the office windows – and the expression of gratitude for the chances one is granted by that world.” With one eye on globalization opportunities, Fosun took a large share in Club Med in 2010.

FOSUN AND CLUB MED SHAKE HANDS

Guo: “Business and ecology are essentially the same thing. Being the world’s largest tourism resort chain, Club Med is but one example of combining China’s growth momentum with global resources. Its service model is unique in our country. Of course, cultural tourism is just one of the directions for Fosun investment. Meanwhile, we will increase our investments in the field of health care, pension funds and so on. We help companies establish goals, allocate resources, and guide them to explore chances of globalization based on their own vision. Our philosophy helps them to establish incentive mechanisms and optimize their process of innovation. We share our knowledge so we can learn from ourselves and from them. Fosun Group needs rapid development and expansion, and in that respect we might learn a thing or two from our overseas friends. As the Club Med example shows, learning is very much a mutual thing.”

he urge to sail the seven seas created a new sort of humans: people to whom home was no longer sweet. People like Matteo Ricci, who fled the violence of his Italian hometown by becoming an eccentric Jesuit missionary; and people like our poet/hero Camões (read: camoens), who, after his hopes of obtaining recognition for valiant deeds were dashed, wrote: “The last words I uttered on board the vessel before leaving: Ungrateful country! thou shalt not even possess my bones.”

Macau, where land and sea intersect as well as trade routes and cultures, is the hub of maze-dwellers. What does this maze look like? Miniature landscape, which is meant to express the harmony that should exist between man and nature, enclosed by walls and includes ponds, rock gatherings, trees and flowers, and an assortment of halls and pavilions connected by winding paths and zigzag balustrades. By moving from point to point, visitors can view a series of carefully composed scenes, unrolling like an ink scroll, and like an ink scroll, Chinese gardens mirror the universe in miniatures, enjoyable and dramati-

cally enigmatic. A place where time stops its pace; a place where the maze-dwellers become immortals. Camoes Garden and Grotto, or Camoes Garden, is one of Macau’s oldest parks. It is also Macau’s largest park covering an area of nearly 20,000 square meters. Originally it was the house of a Portuguese merchant who enjoyed raising pigeons. His house served as a beautiful backdrop to the hundreds of flying pigeons that he raised. From afar, the pavilions and buildings in the compound looked like nests. After the death of the merchant, his residence was donated to the government, commemorating the great Portuguese poet, which is where the name of the garden comes from. Generally regarded as the greatest poet of the Portuguese language, Camões led a wild, but uncertain life, much of his biography being based on his poems. He was probably born in Lisbon, the son of minor, impoverished aristocrats, and definitely died in his homeland in 1580. In between he lived in many places: Coimbra, where he is assumed to have studied at the university; Morocco, where he lost an eye during combat as a soldier for the Portuguese army; India, where he served as a soldier for three years, after which he probably held administrative posts; Arabia and the East African coasts, on military expe-

Macau, the threshold between sea and land on the crossroad of East and West. Perhaps, Macau gives you not a home but a setting for a grand movie, or even for life – which is an epic gamble after all. Gambling in Macau has been legal since the 1850s when the Portuguese government legalized the activity in the colony. Macau casino revenue jumped 32 percent to a record of 36.5 billion patacas ($ 4.57 billion) in October 2013, boosted by mainland Chinese visitors who spent their Golden Week holiday in the world’s largest gambling hub – “A passion that gains when lost…”: Macau says golden hellos.

Because of peeving the court officials, he was exiled from his country and lived in Macau for two years. He often came to the park and framed up his poems. Here he composed the epic poem Os Lusíadas (Soul of Portugal). People in Macau show great respect to the poet. 10 June, the day he died, was declared Portugal Day by the government. On this day every year, the Portuguese living in Macau assemble in the park to celebrate and remember Camões. The small mountains, trees, grass and flowers, every detail of the large tapestry captures your imagination as you walk along the winding paths to finally reach the highest point, the Gazebo. Here you can enjoy the striking views of the inner harbor, and to the north, a gushing fountain greets your eyes with plenty of shimmering, soft shadows. Camoes Garden is a popular spot for locals to do their morning exercises, to play chess, to walk their birds or to meet with friends. marVEl! Five Claw Dragon Bowl in Green & Blue

The bowl has two five-clawed dragons running along the outside amongst flaming pearls and clouds. The inside of the bottom has another dragon. Each dragon has one finger of each claw colored in with black enamel to make it appear to be a four-clawed dragon! One theory for the phenomenon is that the porcelain was altered this way so it could be removed from the imperial palaces. Or that it was no longer considered destined for the use of the emperor. A saucer with a similar decoration and enameling and with the fifth claw removed can be found in the Bauer collection (Geneva) and a smaller dish is in the collection of Musée Guimet (Paris).

Literature:

SimiLar eXampLeS Two Kangxi dishes decorated with underglaze blue ground and green enamel dragons and clouds, one in the Baur Collection and one in the Musée Guimet, also have additional black enamel applied to obliterate the fifth claw on each of the dragon’s feet. This would have been done after the dishes had left the imperial palace. The Baur dish is illustrated by J. Ayers in The Baur Collection Geneva - Chinese Ceramics vol. 4, 1974, no. A555. The combination of underglaze blue ground with overglaze green enamel dragons is relatively rare, but similarly decorated dish belonging to the Umezawa Kinenkan was exhibited in the Special Exhibition - Chinese Ceramics, Tokyo National Museum, 1994, no. 316. A Kangxi bowl with similar decoration is in the collection of the Shanghai Museum and illustrated by Lu Minghua in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Wood Publishing, Hong Kong, p. 300, no. 194. A copy of this technique and design was made in the Tongzhi period. A Tongzhi example, of the same size as the current Kangxi dish, was exhibited at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Washington D.C. and published in Joined Colors: Decoration and Meaning in Chinese Porcelain, Tai yip, Hong Kong, 1993, no. 83.

portuGaL, here We Come!

Most people don’t know that the change of air pressure and air-co affect your taste buds. This is the case during the flight. As soon as I took off from Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport, I noticed I tasted much less. That’s bad news to my glass of champagne. For wine it’s not getting better as aromatic fruits would taste much less strong and the acidity will rise up. Most of us don’t like that in a wine. Viognier, highly aromatic, and Carmenere, the powerhouse, may be reasonable choices during your flight, but to be honest I prefer some music in my ears while I sip my gin and tonic or a Screwdriver.

In the evening we arrived at Oporto airport. As I expected, we drove to Peso da Regua immediately. The town is close to the wine region; it would be easy for us to start early next morning by taking an old local train. And what an idyllic trip that was! The train station was decorated with blue tiles and old mosaics. This is the Portugal I know. The beautiful terraces of the Douro outside the window made a huge impression on me. It is the spectacle of nature that surpasses itself to become something cultural. The lines of the terraces, the sets of nature’s balconies, and the water. I wonder how Escher would have evolved if he had not found his inspiration in Italy but in Portugal…

QuiNta VaL de meÃo In Pocinho we were welcomed by Francisco Javier Olazabal and Luisa Olazabal. The father and daughter are the owners of the famous winery Quinta do Vale Meão. Mr. Olazabal was once CEO of the port house Ferreira, but for romantic reasons (and if you meet his wife, you know why), he started this wine company in 1998. At present, there are two red wines and one porto, and Francisco Olazabal (brother) and Nicolau de Almeida (husband) are the makers of their own produces. • Meandro do Vale Meão - Meandro is Greek for Turkish river • Quinta do Vale Meão • Quinta do Vale Meão Vintage Port - There is also a special cuvee • Monte Meão - Single vineyard, 100% Touriga Nacional of granite soil

QuiNta do porto, barCa VeLha The largest wine of the Douro. An icon that is responsible for the fact that the winemakers of the Douro – which lies next to port – are producing red wines, some vineyards today are even venturing into white wines. Produced in the best years, so far they have only released 17 times since 1952, an exclusivity not to be missed! We tasted 2004. Too young, and the wine should rest for another 20 years before she is showing her full spectrum of promises. 1982. What a revelation! Depth. Complexity. yet I had the feeling that it needed more time to age gracefully...

SouL maKeS the WiNe Sandra Tavares da Silva made us truly feel why the wines of Douro are so special. It is not only the soil, the climate, the grapes or the vineyard. It is the passion of the winemaker plus Sandra’s charisma. Sandra is married to Jorge Borges Serôdio; both make their own wine. The husband and wife are running projects together at different wineries. We felt very honored by our visit; both took the time to teach us about their wines. 3 of their wines stayed with me. • Guru, White. Elegant, rich and powerful, yet subtle. Very refreshing • Pintas Character - A second wine of the company. Elegant, soft and smooth. Lots of fruit. Good for Chinese cuisine • Pintas - The top cuvee. A single vineyard with more than 30 different grape varieties. If I start telling you about the flavors, I would probably end up writing an encyclopedia.

very once in a while we need to throw away old stuff and make space for new stuff. I am sure most of us have this kind of radical moments. From my own experience, I know it’s better to start cleaning before it has become an immediate urgency. What I’m trying to say here is that crises can bring us new perspectives and new opportunities. To leave our past behind in order to welcome a new idea, to build a new life or even a new home!

I’m talking about my digital home, my company’s home page – Recently I have been struggling with a few uncertainties, which didn’t make any sense to me in the first place. As I was forced to reexamine my goals and ambitions, I knew it was time to sort out my current mental settings and take charge of the future. It may sound more dramatic than it is, because all I did was looking at my old website and logo, and I wondered if these still corresponded with my idea of a purpose, if my home was still writing my vision... In my adult life I have always been carrying two worlds in me: two different mentalities and cultures. China vs. Holland. East vs. West. My intellectual interest vs. my commercial instinct. I am all these things. All these things have made me the entrepreneur that I am today. I discovered that my holding company and I are having the same lifecycles and carrying out one mission: Building bridges between worlds by bringing into play my enthusiasm for Chinese culture and my preference for beauty. At the moment, I am working on developing my holding company so we can attract talents and inspired and inspiring projects from different worlds. We help investors to find the next big thing. Sharing is becoming more and more important in today’s world. And to be able to share, we need a new channel to bring us to a new level of experience and make us all grow together. XiN magazine is the continuous effort that makes it all possible!

ruthless Kekexili Text: Julie Oyang

Mountain Patrol is a film inspired by a true story and remarkable mission surrounding the illegal Tibetan antelope poaching in the region of Kekexili, the largest nature reserve in China. Set against the exquisite backdrop of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, director Lu Chuan tells the tale of Tibetans who face death and starvation to save the endangered antelope herds from a band of ruthless hunters. Filmed on the actual locations, it is a grand mix of fatalistic Western and ravishing documentary. If your image of Tibet is one of praying, peace-loving monks, here’s your cure: these men fight for what they believe to be right and have altruistic motives. Brought to the screen with great, poetic details, white-knuckle tension and Hemingway machoism. Remember his name: Lu chuan, one of my favorites of the new Chinese cinema.

On 2 December 2013, a Dutch film opens the Humans Rights week in Manila. Hopefully Filipino officials won’t be shocked being confronted with an ongoing tragedy looming over the archipelago. How can the world, our so-called civilization, shut its eyes for the appalling side effects of modern society? “Rome wasn’t built in one day”, is a saying that not only holds ground for architects. Independent filmmakers, more than any of the artists involved in the wide variety of the seven arts, are aware of the ruthless truth: it takes thorough efforts, if not a lifetime of suffering, to get a deal landed and finance a motion picture. Let alone a full-length feature about child prostitution in the Philippines. It took Dutch writer/director Jacco Groen (49) two decades to get his project off the ground: Lilet Never Happened, a moving story of an underage prostitute seeking a home, an oasis of love, a mere utopia for an abused child growing up in the slums of Manila. The film is based on true, disturbing, if not upsetting, facts. Most remarkable how a Dutch filmmaker swims against the tide, chooses a topic that few Dutch people are related to, and ends up receiving international acclaim across borders. After a handful earlier awards (amongst others in Auburn, Copenhagen, Los Angeles), the low-budget film, produced by Groen under his own outfit Springfilm, won three awards at this year’s Manhattan film festival in October 2013 and one at the Oaxaca film festival in Mexico. In total the film has been selected at 28 film festivals spread over all continents.

Lilet Never Happened tells the chilling story of a ten-year-old girl who runs away from home after being repeatedly raped by her stepfather. She ends up in a center for children in trouble where Claire, a sensitive activist – a role magnificently brought to life by Johanna ter Steege – tries to help her. However, Lilet never ceases her strong urge to burn all her bridges and seek for the ever-dark side of life on the edge.

For obvious reasons Groen went looking for actors instead of people living similar lives. A myriad of girls could have been brought in front of the camera to tell their gripping story, a life lesson in horror. But they weren’t ready, their storylines unfinished. With a background of numerous TV-documentaries and shorts, Groen gained most recognition with his 9-episode TV-series. Meiden van de Keileweg tells about the shady underworld of Rotterdam. Why this time did he choose the fiction genre to depict the atrocity of child prostitution in Asia? Clearly to reach even deeper inside the cave, where the public keeps its emotions locked up and to set off the bomb under certain circumstances. According to a script doctor from Tinseltown/Hollywood who helped polishing the script, the harsh reality of the true facts needed to be toned down. The original story was even darker. One can’t deprive the audience of any hope at the end of the road. Satisfied with his first feature finally under the belt, Groen counts on cashing in, primarily by having gained the long awaited respect of the Dutch Film Fund that has offered him the cold shoulder for over two decades. Lilet was judged “not sufficient Dutch”, according to the Oracle at the Dutch Ministry of Culture, sending him walking with a lousy 40,000 euro, after the film got selected at the A-list Warsaw film festival. Through the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and some Human Rights organizations, Groen went ahead with his stubborn plan by raising a modest 250,000 euro to realize his master plan.

Lilet Never Happened is internationally sold by Medialuna.

hen I was studying Sinology in Leiden, I was fortunate enough to have his eminence Professor Erik Zürcher around to introduce the students to the beauty of classic Chinese. Every week Professor Zürcherwould presentus with texts that give a better insight into the Chinese ancient history. I especially remembered one document. It was apetitionto the Emperor written by a patriotic civil servant, who complained about the Roman Catholic Church that was being built in the vicinity of the tomb of the first Ming Emperor, Hongwu. Apart from the fact that the construction did not look Chinese at all, the civil servant simply could not accept that “…a place where dragons and tigers stride has become a place where foxes and rodents crawl freely…”! Certainly foreign merchants and evangelists had no place here, and why should beautiful Nanjing deserve to be marred by that xenomorphic…thing! On a wintery day in 1988, I suddenly understoodwhere the civil servant came from, when I was walkingon Elephant Road that led to the tomb of Hongwu. Splendid Ming sculptures of lions, xiezhi, camels, elephants, qilin and horses still guardedboth sides of the road. The purple aura of the emperorwho ousted the yuan emperor and conquered his competitors. He established the dynasty that made China a strong empire again – as if I could feel the magnificent presence under my skin that cold day. The good news is, this winter we don’t have to travel all the way to Nanjing to feel what I felt: De NieuweKerk and Nomad Exhibitions have brought a rich collection of Ming artefacts to Amsterdam for you!

Being a motivated traveller, she started working in the Dutch travel industry, and it was during this time that she realized the great potential of tourism in her hometown and the lack of travel agencies that take care of foreign travellers in Southwest China. In 2011 she moved back to Kunming where she founded her own tour operating business: Wonders of yunnan Travel.

By LINDA LIN

As a native of yunnan Province, I am proud of the rich natural beauty of the region’s rich natural beauty as well as the culture’s uniqueness. Out of China’s 55 ethnic minorities, 26 are calling yunnan their homeland. In this remote corner between the Himalayas and lush subtropical landscapes bordering Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, yunnan’s hidden treasures are welcoming people from all over the world. Known as the City of Eternal Spring, Kunming is situated just north of the Tropic of Cancer, subtropical heat is rare though at an altitude of 2000m above sea level. It is not getting too cold either in the winter as the sun shines continuously during daytime. Being an important, bustling hub for economy, politics, infrastructure and culture, Kunming has become the well-established “Chinese Gate to Southeast Asia” during the last two decades. Outside of the modern cities of yunnan Province, the small towns are still keeping their ancient charms along with their well-preserved customs: people of ethnic minorities in characteristic dresses and their local cuisine. It is this distinctive mix that turns my homeland into a real pearl of China.
