INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE AND REGGIO EMILIA IN ACTION GRADE 3

The Grade 3 students lead an allschool assemblea to celebrate together Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day. We gathered around the incredible reproduction of Washington, D.C., that the students had made for this special occasion and we heard from twelve different voices the powerful words that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. pronounced in Washington, D.C., in August 1963, during his speech now known as the “I Have a Dream” speech. They presented the speech in both fluent English and Italian.

A trio of students read a kid-friendly version that they wrote to ensure all grades could navigate the ideas of MLK when he spoke about the bank of justice. Then, students, teachers, and staff of the Mission Campus were given a block of clay to model into a figurine; all the figurines were then placed in the model of Washington, D.C. to represent both the crowd that was present during Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, and our commitment to always remember, cherish, and take action.

Following the assemblea, the set and figures were relocated to the school library as an exhibit and documentation to extend the event.
