LA PAZ ES POSIBLE Una vez más el Movimiento Internacional Juvenil Lasallista nos invita a reflexionar, orar y comprometernos con la causa de la Paz, que este año celebraremos el 21 de septiembre. El tema escogido es sumamente inspirador: La Paz es posible. Sí es posible si cada uno de nosotros nos implicamos en su búsqueda y en la creación de relaciones fraternas. Es posible si ponemos a las personas, a todas las personas, por encima de las cosas, es posible si hacemos nuestro el proyecto de Dios sobre la humanidad. Este año hay otro motivo que nos invita a este compromiso. Estamos celebrando los 50 años de la Encíclica Pacem in terris de Juan XXIII, la primera que fue escrita no sólo para los católicos o creyentes sino también para todos los hombres de buena voluntad, publicada el 11 de abril de 1963. En un momento histórico en el que el mundo se debatía por las tensiones entre el bloque capitalista y el soviético con la construcción del Muro de Berlín y la crisis de los misiles en Cuba, el Papa lanzó un grito por la paz invitándonos a una paz que no se limita a una coexistencia pacífica sino que se debe construir día tras día a partir de cuatro valores fundamentales: la verdad, la justicia, la caridad y la libertad, teniendo siempre en cuenta los derechos humanos. Como jóvenes lasallistas cuando hablamos de una paz posible hay que pensar en los niños y en el mundo que van a heredar. Si queremos que la paz sea posible debemos empezar por ellos. Gandhi decía: Si queremos alcanzar la verdadera paz en este mundo y si queremos llevar a cabo una verdadera guerra contra la guerra, deberemos comenzar con los niños. Y si ellos crecen unidos de su inocencia natural no tendremos que luchar más sino que iremos del amor al amor y de la paz a la paz. Es muy triste saber que desde el comienzo de la guerra de Siria han muerto 6.500 niños a causa de la misma según un informe de las Naciones Unidas. Es muy triste saber que hoy en el mundo existen cerca de 300.000 niños soldados de acuerdo a un informe de Amnistía Internacional, que son utilizados como máquinas de guerra, cargadores, espías, mensajeros, guardaespaldas, esclavos/as sexuales, detectores de “minas”…

Es importante conocer y hacer conocer esta realidad, rezar por estos niños y en la medida de nuestras posibilidades formar parte de las asociaciones que luchan contra esta lacra, que avergüenza a la humanidad. Recuerdo con admiración una obra lasallista en Mannar, Sri Lanka, en donde los Hermanos tienen una obra en favor de los niños que estuvieron enrolados en la guerra recién terminada. Ciertamente todos podemos hacer algo, empezando en nuestro propio ambiente. El responder como lasallistas a las necesidades de los más vulnerables fue una de las propuestas que nos hizo la Asamblea Internacional de la Misión Educativa Lasallista, del mes de mayo pasado. La paz es posible, viendo el panorama actual, parece un sueño y una utopía. Pero debemos confiar en la capacidad que todos tenemos de construir un mundo más humano inspirado en los valores del Evangelio en diálogo con todas las religiones y los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad. Ojalá sea un día realidad y ojalá hayamos nosotros hecho posible esta bella visión de nuestro futuro: Llegará un día en que los niños aprenderán unas palabras que les costará comprender Los niños de la India preguntarán ¿Qué es el hambre? Los niños de Alabama preguntarán ¿Qué es la segregación racial? Los niños de Hiroshima preguntarán ¿Qué es la bomba atómica? y todos los niños de todas las escuelas se preguntarán ¿Qué es la guerra? y tú serás quién, habrá de responder: Son nombres de cosas caídas en desuso como las diligencias, como las galeras o la esclavitud. Esas palabras ya no quieren decir nada, por eso las retiramos del diccionario (Jean Debruyne).

International Lasallian Days for Peace: 21 Sep – 21 Oct, 2013 – 7th Edition

PEACE IS POSSIBLE Once again the International Young Lasallians Movement invites us to reflect, pray and commit ourselves to the cause of Peace. This year we will celebrate the event on September 21st. The theme chosen is truly inspiring: Peace is Possible. Yes, peace is possible if each one of us gets involved in seeking it out and in creating fraternal relationships. It is possible when we place persons, all persons, above things. It is possible if we make our own God's plan for humankind. This year there is another reason for being invited to make this commitment. We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Encyclical Pacem in Terris by John XXIII, the first encyclical that was written not only for Catholics or believers but also for all people of good will. It was published on April 11, 1963. At a time in history when the world was being torn apart by tensions between capitalists and the Soviet bloc with the construction of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban missile crisis, the Pope opted for peace by inviting us to a peace that is not limited to peaceful coexistence but one that should be built day after day starting from the four core values: truth, justice, charity and freedom, while always taking into account human rights. As Young Lasallians when we speak about possible peace we have to think about children and the world that they are going to inherit. It we want peace to be possible we need to begin through them. Gandhi said: If we want to achieve true peace in this world and if we want to wage a true war against war, we must start with the children. If they grow up united in their natural innocence we will no longer have to fight but we will move from love to love and from peace to peace.

It is a very sad thing to know that since the beginning of the war in Syria more than 6,500 children have died because of it, according to data from the United Nations. It is also very sad to know that today in the world there are about 300,000 child soldiers according to a report from Amnesty International. These children are used as loaders, spies, messengers, bodyguards, sex slaves, human mine detectors... It is important to know and to make known this fact, to pray for these children and, as far as our possibilities allow, to be part of associations that fight against this plight, which is an embarrassment for humankind. I remember admiring a Lasallian work in Mannar, Sri Lanka, where the Brothers have a ministry in favor of children who were enlisted in the war recently ended. Certainly we can all do something, beginning in our own local area. Responding as Lasallians to the needs of the most vulnerable was one of the propositions made to us by the International Assembly for the Lasallian Educational Mission which was held this past May. Peace is possible, yet if we look at the current situation, it seems to be a dream and a utopia. But we need to trust in the ability we all have to build a more just world that is inspired in Gospel values in dialogue with all religions and with men and women of good will. Hopefully, peace will be a reality and hopefully we will make possible this beautiful view of our future: May the day come when some words will be difficult for children to understand. The children of India will ask: What is hunger? The children of Alabama will ask: What is racial segregation? The children of Hiroshima will ask: What is an atomic bomb? And all kids in all the schools will ask: What is war? And you will have to say to them: They are the names of things that have fallen into disuse such as stagecoaches, galleys or slavery. These words no longer mean anything and for that reason we have removed them from the dictionary. (Jean Debruyne)
