2022commenced with great joy at LaSalle on the strength of the academic performance of our 2021 HSC group. Our first fully Co-educational cohort certainly excelled academically with a record number of Band 6 results and a sharp climb in the school’s performance ranking. I attribute these successes to the hard work of the students concerned and ably supported by their parents and teachers. The targeted work on literacy across all teaching areas proved to make a real difference. The trials and tribulations of the COVID pandemic in terms of lockdown appeared behind us initially but the impact persisted with periods of isolation still in play and staff shortages causing great hardship. It was wonderful to be able to gather again for whole school liturgies.

“I attribute these successes to the hard work of the students concerned and ably supported by their parents and teachers.”

The HSC class of 2021 had an extraordinary finish last year; trials were modified, the teaching year extended, exams were delayed, isolation requirements impacted the ability of students to sit exams, and a burning desire to celebrate as the first coed cohort in this current coeducational phase of the college. The graduation night was a late but fitting finish for an outstanding group.

Congratulations to the HSC class of 2021, their parents and teachers. The overall results were again very positive; a total of 47 Band 6s (marks between 90-100, meaning a higher success rate of 8.5%) and 143 Band 5s (marks between 80 & 89). Daniel Chahine achieved our highest ATAR of 97.75. In Electrotechnology, Michael Dawson came 1st in Diocese for Electrotechnology & 5th in the State. Although a somewhat limited indicator, we improved 183 places in the newspaper calculation rankings.

In terms of strategic improvement we have had three focus areas this year:

▪ To improve literacy results through a targeted schoolbased approach to writing across all Year groups through KLA programmes

▪ To participate in the life and mission of the Catholic faith community by developing student initiatives through art and music based on engagement with the faith tradition

▪ To implement a school-based approach to specific wellbeing strategies incorporating BeYou initiatives into the pastoral scope sequence and programs.

I am pleased to report progress has been made in each of these areas. Professional learning for staff and collaborative

whole-school initiatives in this space are having a positive impact on academic performance and student confidence. The meeting of minimum standards has been achieved across the board and better results are flowing through into HSC performance and now NAPLAN as well. Our trend data reflects continuous improvement over the last few years in writing, and a sharp improvement in performance when compared to the similar school group. Student engagement in the liturgy has increased in 2022. The collaboration of staff and increasing numbers of musicians and singers have enhanced our liturgies. The number of entries to the various religious art competitions has also been impressive.

The pastoral needs of students have never been greater. The impact of the pandemic has been profound on the mental health of students. The college response has included a strengthening of in-class programs, a significant increase in counselling provisions and the systematic referral of students in greatest need with the assistance of the Wellbeing team at Sydney Catholic Schools.

In Term 3, when a hostile group of outsiders attacked our students just outside school one afternoon, our efforts to maintain a safe environment were put to the test. I congratulate our students and families for their calm and measured response and above all their cooperation with the Police and other authorities to let our justice system deal with the offenders. Such events, rare as they may be, test our faith and resilience. I am grateful for the continued support from our families for the college and its staff following the event.

A system initiative, the Amadeus classical music tuition program, has proven to be a popular and engaging addition to our curriculum offerings. This year all students in year 7 received an instrument and tuition each fortnight in both a tutorial group and an ensemble group. I particularly thank Mrs Woods for her leadership in this space. I look forward to this program extending to year 8 as well next year.

6 LaSalle Catholic College

In sport, our system of schools has moved away from our traditional competitions to a more localised inter-school competition with clearer representative pathways. It has been an interesting year, typically travelling West now rather than East to compete and meeting a range of new schools to play against. The greater focus on multidisciplinary sports has enabled a whole new group of students to experience the fun and challenges of competitive sports.

In terms of property, our ovals suffered in 2022 due to the relentless rain. This rendered them unusable for much of the year, unable to bear the weight of mowers. We welcomed a new gymnasium for sports and fitness training and look forward to the refurbishment of our toilets across the school.

The generosity of LaSalle students and staff shone through at different times. We have been able to continue our support of Caritas over Lent. There has been the ongoing formation of Lasallian Youth Leaders as well as Lasallian staff formation for our new teachers. Our Year 12 students again worked as catechists in the local schools for as long as they were able, supporting those generous parishioners who dedicated themselves to this task. Our Mad Day (Mission Action Day) was one of the best ever. We were very fortunate to have recently ordained ex-student, Fr Ben Saliba, as the principal celebrant, along with Fr William and Deacon Chris, lead us in liturgy to begin the day and set the tone for a great celebration involving rides and stalls, a BBQ for all and our MAD day show to finish. More rides than ever before and the most funds ever raised to support our twinned school in Pakistan.

I wish to take the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of Father Van and Father William to the life of the College. They have been generous in their support of the liturgical life of the College, and participation in the administrative functions around finance, property and enrolment procedures has been invaluable. Father William’s role as Chaplain this year has seen him able to be part of many classes and commence a regular Wednesday lunchtime mass for staff and students on the college grounds. I have been greatly supported in my role by the Executive Team at the College; Ms Leonie Dowd, Mrs Sara Giorgiutti, Mrs Lisa Barnsley, Mrs Bethany Davidson, Mrs Lisa- Maree Balser, Mrs Margaret Phillips, Mr Adam Westwood, Mr Peter Cartledge and Mrs Anne Saliba. Their professionalism at a time of great change has been greatly appreciated.

The LaSalle Parent Group meets each term, twice as an executive group and two open meetings in terms 2 and 4; the first with a presentation on Cyber safety and the second with a Police presentation on safety. I remain grateful to the De La Salle Brothers community and all they bring to LaSalle. Br Gerry has remained a constant supporting presence assisting students in need; his presence on our staff was greatly appreciated.

As I finish my tenth year as principal at the college, I have been humbled by the messages of support upon the announcement of an eleventh and final year. I look forward to 2023 at LaSalle.

Live Jesus in our hearts, Forever.

Assistant College Principal

It is without a doubt that I am so honoured to be the Assistant Principal at such a great College – LaSalle, Bankstown. As a member of the Executive Leadership team, it has been quite humbling and satisfying. Once again, over these past years, I have an overwhelming sense of appreciation for such a dedicated, considerate and generous staff and students who truly embody the philosophy of our founder, Saint John Baptist de la Salle. The role of the Assistant Principal is a very privileged one as it allows me to have an overarching view of what happens in the school community and how it all fits nicely together for the benefit of the students in our care.

One outstanding tradition of Lasallian schools is to demonstrate a genuine concern for the needs of the poor and marginalised. Once again, this has been truly witnessed by the students and staff being actively involved with the College’s liturgical celebrations, Reflection Days, retreat program, annual Caritas Appeal, and the Staff Spirituality Day. My fondest memory for 2022 would have to be the LaSalle Founder’s Mission in Action Day, which continued to delight the College in many ways.

The MAD initiative sees year groups collaboratively working together in the preceding weeks to conduct a fundraising event. On MAD itself, individual homerooms work to provide a variety of stalls – be it food stalls or fun activities to ensure that the day is enjoyed by students and staff together. The support for this initiative reflects the generous concern and care of our students and staff who see the need to assist those less fortunate than we. We were also blessed with brilliant weather and so everyone was able to enjoy the rides as well.

Of course, MAD would not be complete without the Mass, which was a true reflection of the values our College founder, Saint John Baptist de la Salle has inspired in all of us – that we should be people of mercy, compassion, forgiveness, acceptance and love for each other. Finally, the day was completed with exceptionally gifted performances in ‘LaSalle’s Got Talent’. I was totally spellbound. The talent of the staff performances left us all captivated.

Of course, it is not just the sports carnivals and Mission in Action Day that bring to life the sense of community belonging. It is all the extracurricular activities such as debating, chess, College band, staff versus student matches, and creative art performances. The students should feel so proud of their accomplishments in every domain.

I also wish the Graduating Class of 2022 all the best with their future choices. I also wish them happiness and

bountiful health. Graduation is an important milestone in their learning journey, this is true, but it is also the beginning of a journey that continues until the last day. If you can understand this – then you can make a real difference in our world.

I have been particularly aware of the dedication and drive of the staff, both teaching and support, to do their best in every endeavour. At times this leaves them exhausted, but every time they step up to the bar to model the best in their work with the students and with each other. This year, sadly, there has been a shortage of teachers across the state, both private and state schools. As such, the many teachers at LaSalle have had to pick up that challenge to not only teach their own classes but to take on many extras to cope with this dilemma. They did so without complaint, and I witnessed many teachers go out of their way to teach a class in a subject that they would not normally teach. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students and parental community for the collaborative partnership offered throughout this year. This collaboration is what has made LaSalle a wonderful community to belong to.

I was also fortunate to take some Long Service Leave in Term 3. I thank Mr Adam Westwood who very capably acted as Acting Assistant Principal throughout this time and Mr Peter Cartledge who subsequently carried out the Acting Leader of Pastoral Care. To both of you – my heartfelt thanks.

I look forward with such eagerness to work again in 2023 to ensure that we continue to develop committed students, show confidence, and strive for success. Young adults who will “Let the way (they) live be that of the Gospel.”

DUX

Hellopeers and the greater LaSallian family, my name is Daniel Chahine and I am the college dux of LaSalle for the class of ‘21, and I’ve been given this opportunity to thank the people that need to be thanked and to give some advice to the students of LaSalle.

Firstly, I have my family to thank, both immediate and extended. I’m incredibly lucky and blessed by God to have some very open, willing, and supportive family around me. They granted me the clarity of mind and the confidence in myself that I needed to remain focused, which was crucial to my development as both a student and a person, and their unfailing care and assurance made a world of difference to my experience. Following that, I have the greater LaSallian community to thank including the peers, teachers, admin, and amazing friends that have been there along the way. These people helped lift my spirits day in and day out, and they know who they are, so to those people, I thank you for making my time as enjoyable and memorable as it was. I also have to congratulate the entire LaSallian class of ‘21 for having shared in the journey that lasted much more than just our senior years, but as far back as year 7, and some as far back as primary school. I thank you all the same, for the memories that I take with me, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I wish each and everyone of you the best in future.

“These people helped lift my spirits day in and day out, and they know who they are, so to those people, I thank you for making my time as enjoyable and memorable as it was.”

In light of this opportunity, I figured I’d share some things to the class of ‘22 that I have either learned, or think that they should hear, as they continue their journey through year 12 this year.

The first of which is that you all should know that your fears, worries and confusions are justified. With all kinds of pressures, from school, to friends, to expectations, you understandably feel challenged but in light of this, try to have the humility to realise when you need help, and have the courage to find it. No-one is too good to ask for help, and nobody has all the answers. I learned in my own way as far back as year 7 and as recently as year 12, that seeking the help I needed to overcome my own stresses was

a massive service to myself, and without the help of some caring family, teachers and friends, things could have been very different. Everyone needs help sometimes.

Next, remember that you are going to make mistakes and you can’t escape it, but they are just as necessary as your successes. My dad always reminded me of the famous baseball player Babe Ruth, who held the sporting record for most lifetime home runs, and at the same time, held the record for most strikeouts, and his point was that you have to take the misses with the hits, the losses with the wins. From that, I ask that you be unwilling to let one loss or one mistake, justify another, and another. I made a lot of mistakes in all my schooling, especially year 12. Those that know me well know that's true. In early year 12 I underprepared for an English task, and my marks took the deserving toll, but in reflection, and with the aid of my teachers, it turned out to be a needed reminder that things can, and will go wrong, but it only counts as a loss if you don’t learn from it.

Which is exactly my next point, that is, being mistaken, error-prone, forgetful, stressed and confused is all a part of the experience, and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t. But the point is that even though you are confused and worried and unmotivated, that you don’t allow yourself to fall shy of working hard, consistently, even though it calls you to be uncomfortable much of the time.

In the end, you can’t let it consume you, trust me when I say, a number captures nothing of both my own and anyone else's experience. I'm thankful and happy to have done well, and I did work hard for what I got, but the truth is you only see the answers I got right, and not the many I got wrong. If you compete with others, you’re going to lose, so you need to focus on bettering yourself. It’s your year 12 experience, you endure the good and bad in it, so treat it as your own and focus on taking up the challenges presented to you in the moment as best as you can, given the conditions. If anything, I can promise, it's that hard work always pays off, maybe not how you may expect in some cases, but it will nonetheless.

2021 College
9Yearbook 2022

For three concise pieces of study and routine advice;

First of all, lay down your non-negotiables and make them clear - these are the things that you are not willing to compromise on, sleep, family time, exercise, the things that make you happy. For example, during the school term, I refused to be doing work past 10pm, unless it was necessary or I was finishing up, I promised I wouldn’t be working if family had come over, and that I’d be at dinner every night.

▪ Secondly, have a plan, even if it sucks, follow it, and change it as you learn about yourself, for example. I knew that I was particularly anxious upon waking up in the mornings so often I didn’t start my study until around 11. Be attentive to how you feel, the way you are, and how that informs the way you approach your work - if you need more breaks, take more breaks, if you can’t stand the silence, play music, if you don’t like sitting down, walk around as you study, or get a standing desk.

▪ Finally, and what I believe to be the most important point, is to think usefully. Develop a mindset where you look for solutions rather than problems. Don’t be discouraged by problems, and don’t be intimidated by work; just do what needs to be done next, as best as you can, because at the end of the day that's all you can do. Your attitude is your greatest asset by far.

And when the time comes, if you’re scared, do it scared, if you're anxious, do it anxiously. But don’t be the victim of your emotions; take them on, and just play the game.

As Aristotle said, “You are what you repeatedly do; excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”. Look to develop small but constructive habits, like eating and sleeping right, taking up initiatives in school, looking for solutions, and seeking help when needed.

To the class of ‘22, enjoy your time in year 12, work hard, but sure, you make some worthwhile memories along the way. To the greater LaSallian family, thank you all for supporting my journey, and to my family and friends, thank you all for standing by me all along the way.

“To the greater LaSallian family, thank you all for supporting my journey, and to my family and friends, thank you all for standing by me all along the way.”

Education

ReligiousEducation in 2022 saw students continue to have the opportunity to know and celebrate their Catholic faith and Catholic identity. Religious Education is at the heart of Catholic education. It informs all aspects of school life and contributes to the mission of the Catholic Church in announcing the good news of Jesus Christ. At a time when society is becoming increasingly secular, with some people even questioning the existence of God, there is a greater need for young people to benefit from a high-quality Religious Education Curriculum that draws on our rich Catholic Intellectual tradition.

“Enter to learn, leave to serve.”

Students in Years 7–12 are invited into a deeper and more intimate relationship with God through their exploration of the Scriptures, their participation in personal and communal prayer and their living out of Catholic social and moral teachings. In response to Jesus’ great commandment of love, the Religious Education at LaSalle provides opportunities for young people to ‘See, Judge and Act’, mindful that Jesus came so that everyone might have “life in all its fullness.”

Our Studies of Religion students in years 11 and 12 had the opportunity to explore other religious traditions, particularly Judaism. As part of their preparation for the HSC, Year 12 participated in a Jewish Marriage incursion where they simulated a progressive Jewish marriage ceremony.

The experience enhanced our knowledge of the atrocities that happened in World War II. It deepened our understanding of the Jewish culture, heritage, lifestyle and how religious practices go hand-in-hand with this.

Said Said (Yr 12)

An insightful experience that helped us to understand better the content we are studying and its relevance to authentic Jewish life. It reinforced our confidence to apply this content in the upcoming HSC exam.

Victoria Solole (Yr 12)

They were also invited to attend the Jewish Museum for the 2022 HSC Study Day for Judaism. Students participated in seminars for their elective studies on significant people, teachings and practices of Judaism. As part of the day, students also had a tour of the museum which is dedicated to the remembrance of the atrocities of the Holocaust. Students also participated in a Q&A seminar with a Holocaust survivor who fled Austria and eventually found peace in Australia after the war.

I’d like to thank our brilliant religion teachers for sharing their expertise and being dedicated to the religious education of LaSalle students. Thank you, Ms Breda, Mr Mikhael, Ms Eltarraf, Ms Dowd, Mr Jacobs, Ms Ayoub, Ms Dagher, Ms Glynatsis, Ms Fayad, Ms Oliveira,

Catholic Life

With the lifting of covid restrictions, the full expression of Catholic life within the college was able to make a return in 2022. Important celebrations of faith occurred such as Reflection Day, Year 11 and 12 Retreat, Reconciliation, Adoration, Praying the Rosary, Celebration of the Eucharist as a College and a Year Group, and even during lunch times.

Year Group Masses at St Felix Church have been celebrated by Fr William and have been a wonderful opportunity for students to share in the eucharist with their cohorts. This year we also started Liturgical Group at LaSalle Bankstown.

Religious
11Yearbook 2022

Our group consists of PowerPoint operators, singers, readers, altar servers and Communion Ministers. The group will not only be ministering in our masses but also in other liturgical aspects of the school and this year saw the beginning of this.

Students in Year 7 participated in class liturgies with their teachers where they received their Youth Bibles. The Bible is a meaningful and relevant faith companion to help students connect with their faith and put it into action.

Students from years 7-10 also participated in their annual Reflection Day where themes ranged from Healthy Relationships and Building Community to Service

and Sacrifice. Students spent the day unpacking their understanding of others, themselves and their faith. They develop an understanding of their role within our Lasallian community and how to be agents of change and contribute to the greater good.

“Reading the Gospel each day helps us to overcome our selfishness and to follow Jesus our teacher with dedication”.

Social Justice

Central to the religious life of our school is the person of Jesus Christ who came among us ‘as one who serves’ (Luke 22.27). Our school is committed to reaching out to help those in need through charitable outreach initiatives and 2022 was no different.

“Our school is committed to reaching out to help those in need through charitable outreach initiatives and 2022 was no different.”

Almsgiving this lenten season was lived through our annual Project Compassion fundraising initiative. Spanning across the six weeks of Lent each year, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australian schools, parishes and supporters together to raise funds for people living in some of the most vulnerable communities worldwide. Fundraising was kicked off by a pancake stall on Shrove Tuesday followed by daily collections in homeroom, a movie night, a pizza stall and a hotdog stand. The college proudly exceeded our fundraising goals and generously contributed $6,635.00.

To live out the Gospel in today’s society means to care for each other and to love our neighbours no matter who they are. For Mission in Action Day this year we considered those without the same opportunities as ourselves, as we raised money for our twinning school LaSalle Campus 2, Urdu High School in Faisalabad in Pakistan. By raising money for new washrooms and maintenance of the school, we lived out the good news of Jesus Christ by caring for our brothers and sisters in Pakistan.

Thank you to all staff, students and families for hearing the call and proclaiming our Catholic values in 2022.

“By raising money for new washrooms and maintenance of the school, we lived out the good news of Jesus Christ by caring for our brothers and sisters in Pakistan.”

This year, Year 12 led the school in a Cultural Day to raise money for the LaSallian Foundation to provide relief to the people of Ukraine. The day consisted of 3 fundraising initiatives: Cultural Mufti, where students could wear cultural dress/accessories, a national flag, a national team jersey or their national colours; A Cultural Food Market, where students prepared and sold food from their different cultural backgrounds; A Cultural Catwalk, where students participated in cultural performances. The day was a great success and our community raise. $3274.45 for the Lasallian Foundation for the people of Ukraine.

TheLaSalle Catholic College community commenced 2022 by celebrating outstanding HSC results by our co-ed graduating class of 2021. Despite the disruptions to learning with lockdowns, teachers were able to provide a high quality education to ensure students reach their potential even through trying times. Some of the results included the Dux of the College achieving an ATAR of 97.75 and nine students receiving an ATAR above 90.

The Literacy Committee launched this year as the College prioritised improving the writing skills of students. The Committee analysed NAPLAN data and used the findings to develop modules to develop the skills of teachers when it comes to teaching literacy and providing feedback on student writing.

The removal of many COVID restrictions meant that staff could participate in face-to-face staff development sessions to expand their expertise in a range of educational facets to further support students. Some of these opportunities include the following:

▪ Understanding by Design PD by Jorga Marrum from the NSW Association of Independent Schools. Staff participated in a day full of collaborative activities which allowed them to reflect on the program design processes used to maximise student performance and engagement.

Updating teaching programs based on learnings from the PD day. Every single teaching staff member in the College was allocated an entire day to refresh and update teaching programs.

Growing Literacy Twilight Sessions. These were developed by the Literacy Committee members and run by KLA Coordinators in several afternoons with the purpose of improving student writing skills.

Thank you is not enough to show my appreciation for the following staff members who worked tirelessly throughout the year to support all initiatives implemented including Mary Connor (Curriculum Coordinator), Margaret Phillips (Head of the Trade Training Centre), all the Key Learning Area Coordinators and Literacy Committee members.

Pastoral Care

TheLeader of Pastoral Care role at LaSalle Catholic College is to support students and staff in terms of pastoral matters. In this role I support students and work alongside the Year Coordinators, Staff and College Executives to create a supportive environment for all.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Year Coordinators and Homeroom Teachers for their ongoing support of myself and the school community and their professional approach they demonstrate in their particular roles. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Mrs Jacqueline Azize and Ms Adriana Cvitan (College Counsellor) for their efforts in dealing with students who are having difficulties.

I would like to thank the College Executives Mr Michael Egan, Ms Leonie Dowd, Mrs Lisa-Maree Balser, Mrs Sara Gorgiutti, Mrs Margret Phillips, and Mrs Lisa Barnsely for their support on behalf of myself, Year Coordinators, Staff and Students at the College.

Also, special mention needs to be given to the College’s ancillary staff for the support they provide staff, students and families of the College.

“Also, special mention needs to be given to the College’s ancillary staff for the support they provide staff, students and families of the College.”

Merit System

2022 saw the continuation of the merit system to allow all students the opportunity to have academic effort, positive attitude toward uniform and grooming, participation in cocurricular activities and good behavior recognised as being an important part of the LaSalle Catholic College community. An accumulation of merits leads to achieving Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards, which come with a certificate and badge.

The Merit system promotes greater public recognition of the students positive contribution to LaSalle Catholic College and encompasses our core values of Commitment, Confidence and Success. The College saw the second student achieve Gold level, that being Diana Maric in Year 8. On Gold level you have to accumulate 80 merits but also organise and implement a program that would benefit students at the College. For Diana’s initiative she organised a lunchtime Table Tennis competition, with many students getting involved and enjoying themselves. Well done Diana.

Pastoral program

Be You

This year LaSalle continued our connection with Be You ( Beyond Blue). Through Be You, Beyond Blue’s aim is to heighten the importance of building mentally healthy learning communities across Australia and encourage educators and learning communities to implement Be You. Year Coordinators took part in professional development learning, concentrating on building resilience and building mentally healthy communities using the knowledge and resources gained to implement into Pastoral programs. The school also has a Be You consultant who helps guide and implement initiatives to help improve the mental health of the school community.

Students at the College have the opportunity to take part in pastoral programs implemented by Year Coordinators along with their homeroom/pastoral teams. In pastoral lessons students are given opportunities and strategies to help improve their ability to deal with life experiences such as improving skills in self-esteem, resilience, working as a team, problem-solving, bullying, coping with change, safe use of technology, and caring for themselves and others.

A big thank you to all who took part in the pastoral growth of the LaSalle Community as a whole. Without everyone’s support and participation in all things involving wellbeing and personal growth, LaSalle would not offer as much as it does for all.

“A big thank you to all who took part in the pastoral growth of the LaSalle Community as a whole.”

Trade Training

Iwouldstart by extending my thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Saint Yon Trade Training Centre (TTC), whose hard work and dedication in 2022 has seen continued growth for the Saint Yon Trade Training Centre (TTC). We commenced the year with another record number of enrolments from both internal and external students, with enrolments peaking at 420 driven by growth in many courses including an additional Automotive class. This year will see our first Human Services cohort complete the HSC exam and we are seeing excellent growth in the subject in regards to enrolments.

The ability of VET subjects to meet market demands has been well demonstrated by the exceptional take up of full time employment seen among our VET students. Our percentage of students going straight into full time work or full time study is very much better than the unemployment rate generally seen for unqualified school leavers. VET courses offered at Saint Yon Trade Training Centre, recognise the need to train students in skills that firstly address their areas of interest but also address labour market demands which enhances their employment opportunities post school.

Throughout 2022, the Saint Yon TTC trainers have continued to offer excellent learning opportunities to students, both internal and external. All trainers are to be congratulated on the way they settled the students back after the lengthy lockdown experiences last year, using the face-to-face time to focus on the practical skills and assessments required in VET. They have all performed with an exceptional level of professionalism and are to be congratulated.

Leanne Hodge joined LaSalle this year in Hospitality and TAS and along with Alexandra Ayoub has done an exceptional job taking over the Hospitality classes where students are learning valuable life skills while producing quality food. They have had the opportunity to do many meaningful service periods such as providing students and teachers with the opportunity to buy treats such as sliders, special meals and pancakes.

Sturat Brown, while doing a great job teaching his expanded Automotive classes has continued to assist with the Pathway Planner role. Stuart has done a great job supporting school presentations and assisting in other aspects of the role.

In order to support the growing number of students attending the TTC we welcomed Danielle Gauci and Diane Yammine who are doing an outstanding job supporting students, parents, external stakeholders and myself in all aspects of life in the TTC.

Congratulations to Mr Keith Porter, Industry Partnership Officer, who has spent considerable time maintaining his industry connections through periods of shutdowns and restrictions. Keith continues to mentor and support the Saint Yon School Based Trainees (SBATs) who have continued to work with their host employers and wherever possible maintained the work placement opportunities for our students. Keith has also been a valuable source of support and information to the host employers on funding changes to support their SBATs while acting as a champion and advocate for the students when needed. As the numbers of SBAT’s, training packages offered and the number of vet students generally continued to grow Keith has met the increased demands with great enthusiasm and skill.

Mr Kevin Barrett, as always, is an asset to the TTC. Kevin oversees resourcing needs for the TTC and assists the trainers in the set up of their respective areas. His ongoing support to all the TTC staff, as well as the wider college community, is very much appreciated.

Congratulations to all Saint Yon Trade Training Centre students for their achievements this year. They have by necessity needed to be flexible and to take advantage of the learning opportunities offered at the TTC. Achievement of competencies, leading to gaining the full qualification being undertaken has been impressive. Congratulations to teachers and students who achieved some impressive HSC results last year as well as their industry qualifications. Congratulations also to any student who left Saint Yon Trade Training Centre throughout the year to commence full time apprenticeships.

Finally, thank you to all the staff and parents who have supported the TTC teachers, trainers, support staff and myself in delivering our Saint Yon Trade courses in 2022.

Business

Iwishto thank the Leadership Team of the college for their ongoing support during 2022. As the college continues to grow in enrolments a key focus has been on infrastructure upgrades and targeted maintenance of the buildings and grounds to ensure that students have access to well equipped and aesthetically pleasing learning environments.

The St Yon Trade Training Centre has also been revitalised with additional staff areas, new gym equipment and classroom furniture, window and floor coverings.

Special thanks to the support staff of the College who do wonderful work in supporting the teaching staff and students. We have 26 support staff who provide services to Administration, Finance, Library, ICT, Education Support and Maintenance.

I extend to families and all staff of the College my best wishes for the Christmas and New Year Season.

“Special thanks to the support staff of the College who do wonderful work in supporting the teaching staff and students.”

College

Theexperience of a lifetime. That’s how I would describe my journey at LaSalle. Walking through the broad front gates for the very first time in 2017, as a young year seven student, I was unaware of the journey that I was going to embark on. The school at the time was quite different - the majority of students were still boys and facilities like the B-block were still in construction.

Despite two years of COVID-19-related challenges, with prolonged lockdowns, our cohort was challenged, as we completed a large proportion of our preliminary studies in lockdown. However, we emerged as a cohort with strengthened relationships and were ambitious to commence our HSC studies on a good note. The pandemic not only imposed pressure from an academic standpoint but also halted many community-based activities, most notably, Mission Action Day. Despite this, our cohort continued to interact via zoom meetings and some of the excuses for tardiness were simply ingenious.

I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation, on behalf of the Year 12 cohort to Miss Nemer. Miss Nemer has guided us over the last three years, courageously guiding the ship, even through the rough waters. Her dedication, patience, transparency and sustained efforts as a year coordinator has enabled the cohort to achieve many tremendous accomplishments. In addition, I’d like to acknowledge and applaud the hard work of the Year 12 homeroom teachers, ensuring that we started each day with a smile and provided continued assurance, particularly in preparation for exams.

Finally, to the graduating class of 2022, our journey together may end here, although the friendships, the memories and the good times will never be forgotten. These memories will dwell in our hearts and minds forever, and some day we will look back fondly and recall them as the ‘good old days’. But for now, Good Night, and Good Luck.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

But as with all good journeys, they must come to an end. We should not be disheartened nor dismayed because the “journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” (Lao Tzu) and as we exist within the confines of a school environment, the world is our oyster. Every person’s “first step” will be different; it will be unique. However, we all leave LaSalle as mature young men and women, shaped by the core LaSallian values that have guided our path over our high school years and will continue to guide our paths for the rest of our lives. Despite our departure, we will always be a part of the LaSallian community and continually advocate the LaSallian ministry far and wide.

“You look the part, you act the part, you are the part.”

College

As I write this, and begin the process of reminiscing on the last six years, I am filled with an array of emotions as the memories flood in. If I had to characterise the entire experience, it would be one of extreme growth. Not only personal growth, but the growth of the graduating cohort into young adults, and most notably, the expansion of the College in a number of aspects. I am honoured to have been a part of this and to watch the school evolve into what it has become. Among all of this change, though, even the most mundane days contribute to the unpredictable experience of high school; as hard as it may be at times, please do not take them for granted.

“I am honoured to have been a part of this and to watch the school evolve into what it has become.”

It goes without saying that we have been blessed with the best staff here at the College. Not a day goes by where I do not sit in awe of the dedication, patience, understanding, and trust that can be found in our teachers. Thank you for your unmatched commitment to the success of students in all aspects of life, and for being pillars in our journey towards adulthood. Particularly to the HSC teachers who have extended their utmost support to us, going above and beyond to ensure that we complete our high school journey, regardless of our pathways, filled with confidence and preparation. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Your work, both behind the scenes and in front of the classroom does not go unnoticed.

Being the second year as a co-educational school, and as we continue to expand in numbers, I want to extend my gratitude to the students of our LaSallian family. You are all the pieces to the growing puzzle that is our school, and to be a College Captain has genuinely meant a lot to me. The relationships I have formed with many of you have continuously challenged and inspired me; you are truly the embodiment of the mission of De LaSalle. Over time, we have been given access to several opportunities that not only add to the life of the College, but also add to the growing list of high school memories. With several more arising, please raise your hand! Don't be afraid! I implore you to find whatever it is that you are passionate about and act upon it; the College will provide you with an environment that is conducive in order for you to flourish!

To the graduating class of 2022, a year group like none other, we have made it. YOU made it. Without each and every single one of you, we would not be who we are, or be where we are today. Spending the latter end of our

senior experience closer than ever has been an invaluable opportunity to strengthen our relationships, and forge the path to the future hand in hand. Our shared experiences have led to the unification of our cohort, and I want to thank you all for being a part of my high school experience. Led by the care and support of Ms. Nemer, our year coordinator, along with our homeroom teachers, we have been so graciously nurtured into the young adults we are today. It is with sadness that I accept that we are at the finish line, but to say that we reached it together, through all the trials and tribulations brings me immense joy. I wish you all the best of luck, and I appreciate you all.

“It is with sadness that I accept that we are at the finish line, but to say that we reached it together, through all the trials and tribulations brings me immense joy.”

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

22 LaSalle Catholic College

Vice Captain

Ican’tcount the days I wished I could leave school, yet here I am now wishing I didn't have to go. School is an experience which must be lived. Memories are made, character is created, and dreams are designed. Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” and a significant part of education is the experience intertwined throughout. Learning the school curriculum, but more importantly, learning about yourself as well as the tools, and skills within.

“You pray for rain; you have to deal with the mud too. That’s part of it”

Denzel Washington

It’s good and well to have lived the experience; however, the question “what have you learned?” Will always be the cornerstone of growth. Towards the end of my schooling career I must reflect on the wisdom, knowledge, and optimism the school has provided me. The learning experience was only enriched by the irreplicable multiculturalism and diversity engulfing the school.

My grandmother always says “excuse me, thankyou, and please are the kindest words you can say”. I’d like to thank the unsung heroes and heroines of the school as the outliers are always the ones on top. To the office ladies who always carried a smile like they were born with it. To the groundskeepers for the wise words of will. To the technical team keeping me grounded when I was most high. Finally, thank you to the teachers that guided, gifted, and graced my life. I have never understood how they go far beyond all limits to purely benefit their students. The best description I can give is nurturing.

For my fellow year 12’s, I must thank the cohort that I have been blessed to spend the last 6 years with. It was always us against the world. Bound by far more than just the school badge. From the players who graced the field, to the thespians who performed on stage. I can comfortably say that we were both the first and last of a new generation. We were the founding mothers and fathers, skip the rush. We set the standard for how a Lasallian, and respectable member of society should act. We diversified the meaning

of success and potential. We set out on this mission, it was never secondary; we improved every January. We made the community as much as the community had made us. We came back like Jordan after 2 covid years.

My personal message to the audience is to “please make life good”, tell your loved ones you love them, when in school; participate in learning, and listening, when relaxing do not distract the mind with an insignificant agenda.

Vice Captain

Tothe students of LaSalle, serving you all has been the most incredible and rewarding opportunity of my life, and I know I'll miss you all. I'll miss the girls I danced with every Thursday, because even though I sometimes make the moves up as I go, it has been an honour to witness our team flourish in the past 6 years as a result of all your hard work as well as the amazing commitment of Miss Blinkhorn, Miss Nasr and Miss Giorgiutti.

I’ll miss the bus trips home from debates on Friday nights when most of us argued harder than in our actual debates. But most of all, I’ll miss the experiences of trying something new for the first time. Throughout my time at LaSalle I challenged myself to be the kind of person who would try anything, from a new sport to robotics to public speaking, and although I’ve never been a natural at anything all I do is try. And I encourage you all to do the same, try new things because we spend too much time being afraid of failure and of what other people may think, but it is when we are fearless that the world and all its beauty is truly opened up to us. For the junior grades, know that you are not alone in the struggles of transitioning into high school. I remember it all too well. Trying to find yourself, figure out who your friends are, your passions and interests can be overwhelming, but whatever you do, don’t lose yourself while trying to fit it in. I faced this challenge myself, but luckily I got smarter in the nick of time and I hope that you all will too.

your Vice Captain. It was an experience unlike any other and I was filled with a great joy and pride to lead such an enthusiastic and fun-loving group of friends, made better only by the fact that I got to do it alongside one of my greatest friends Levi Gooding but I won’t tell him, I think he knows.

I hope that you won’t remember why you switched your homerooms, the bad blood, or the weeks when every day was like a battle. Instead, remember the moments that made you hope it never ends. The handball games at lunch, the impromptu concerts in economics (Thanks Kevin and Michael) and the jokes that made you throw your head back laughing like a little kid. May these memories break our fall into the real world.

Throughout this whole year I constantly found myself asking “If this is the long haul, how did we get here so soon?”. In year 7 this moment felt like forever away, but forever is the sweetest con, and although we are saying goodbye I know this pain won’t be for evermore because the memories we made will live forever. I do ask one favour though, take this book home with you, keep it safe, and if you have children someday, when they point to the pictures, please tell them my name.

So to this year's graduating class, I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22.

To year 12, when the class of 2022 began high school, we never imagined in our wildest dreams the reality of the next 6 years. Long story short, a global pandemic slipped away like a moment in time and to state the obvious we didn’t get our perfect fantasy of what high school would be, but in some ways I think what we were left with was far better.

As we leave highschool and our fondest memories become our future history, wishing we could go back in time while simultaneously being grateful to be out of the woods, I wanted to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to be

To Miss Nemer, thank you for putting up with our year group for the past three years. I know we never painted by the numbers, but I hope that we were making it count. Without you we would never have grown into the young adults we are today, and although we still have a long way to go, I wanted to thank you for being there for us because although at times highschool was a nightmare dressed like a daydream, something about it felt like home, and I think that something was you. From the year 12 class of 2022, we sincerely hope we’re not just another picture to burn.

Lasallian

2022 was a year of endless opportunities following the effects of the pandemic. As a LaSallian community, we collectively endeavoured eye-opening, once-in-a-lifetime experiences that opened new horizons. As the LaSallian Captains, we are proud and grateful to be given the privilege to organise and partake in the activities and ministries of the college community.

We started the year with hope. Hope for more! We wanted to create activities and ministries that would help us make up for what we missed in the past years. We began our year with preparations for Cultural Day, a day that acknowledged and celebrated the diversity of our students’ cultural traditions, but also a day of fundraising activities. Through these activities, each student in the school was able to make a contribution towards our chosen social justice issues.

This year was extremely successful for us! Through CARITAS Project Compassion, Vinnies Appeals, carnivals, movie nights, masses, Mission Action Day and more, we built a great sense of community as a college as well as making a major impact.

We are grateful to LaSalle and the many opportunities it has provided us to build and strengthen our community and create memories that will last a lifetime. As LaSalle leaders, we were so pleased to see how the community has overcome

adversity and maintained our connection to each other. As brothers and sisters of LaSalle, there comes a responsibility that each and every one of us holds to carry on the traditions and principles of our school, to ensure that LaSalle remains a community that is always remembered.

After six years of living together as LaSallians, we want to say thank you! Thank you to all teachers and staff for the dedication that they have always shown to us, throughout our high school experience, by guiding us to be our absolute best in all aspects of our college life. And thank you to all students who helped us make a difference this school year. We wish you all the best and good luck for next year!

Lasallian Youth

2022 was a highly anticipated year for youth ministry with the return of many of our events, programs, and initiatives! A particular highlight was kickstarting the Lasallian Youth Leader (LYL) program again! As many students missed the opportunity to be an LYL in the last couple years, we opened up the program for students from year 10 to 12 for the first time.

As a result, we had an overwhelming interest from students with over 90 students signing up! LYLs are called upon to help facilitate retreats for younger grades, represent the school in ministry excursions and assist in the daily ministry of the school. Thank you to all of our students who said “yes” to becoming an LYL, and hopefully this is the start of a new chapter for the LYL program at the college.

Ongoing faith formation is a Lasallian ministry priority, and the annual reflection days for different grades play a large role in encouraging our students to explore what this means for them. Each grade reflection day is based around a different theme. Year 7 is ‘Building Community’ and year 8 is ‘Heros’. Year 9 experienced a brand new program, ‘Connections’ and Year 10 unpacked ‘Service, Opportunity, Sacrifice’. It was very exciting to also be able to use the brand new gym facilities for all our reflection days this year and thank you for everyone's ongoing support of these days.

The major Lasallian event of 2022 was the Lasallian Youth Gathering (LYG). The college was lucky enough to be hosting school for LYG 2022, and over 130 students from all across

Australia gathered in our school for the event across 3 whole days! The theme for this LYG was ‘Walking New Paths’. Students listened to keynote speakers, participated in workshops, played games, sung their hearts out, and shared in a closing Mass. The whole event was a huge success and all the students who attended made great memories and left with new long lasting friendships!

We are so grateful for another successful year of Lasallian ministry at the college and cannot wait to see what 2023 has in store.

Ministry

Students have been the drive behind many of the faith filled and social justice initiatives this year. Particularly led by our Lasallian Captains Zein Issa and Joel Tarabey, 2022 has brought students the opportunity to experience service and faith from different platforms “spreading the good news of joy”.

Here are some of the works of the students displaying faith, service and community.

Catechist Aids

FSC (Faith, Service, Community) Outreach program was launched at the beginning of this year to connect all the great works that students participate in and complete throughout the year. The program serves the works of the parish, social justice, college community, wider community, and beyond. Students complete 10 hours of service if they are in year 7 and 8, 15 hours of service if they are in year 9 and 10, and 14 hours of service if they are in year 11 and 12. These hours are logged into a booklet which justifies their award at the end of the school year. We have had many students already fulfil these hours with great service.

Our senior students are fortunate to be able to continue to support St Felix Parish Parishioners, as they teach scripture classes at Bankstown North Public School. Our Catechist Aids engage and guide students from kindergarten to year 6, as they learn about what it means to be Catholic, how to pray and how to live a life like Jesus Christ.

Being part of Catechist training informed me of the importance of spreading the faith. We are fortunate in a Catholic school to be able to learn and practice our faith. The training marked the beginning of our commitment to teach children about their faith and be excited to be part of the wider Christian community. – Diala Daoud

St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal

The St Vincent De Paul winter Appeal was a great success in Term 2. We had a large amount of donations from all members of our community. Students from Year 12 collected the items from each homeroom on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, bracing for the cold. Year 9 organised the items into the appropriate boxes for the Vinnie’s truck to collect and be able to distribute to vulnerable members of our Bankstown community. Our Faith in Action group during the term also knitted squares, where Amelia and Zein from year 12 sewed into blankets, which would be used by infants and adults. As always, our LaSalle Bankstown community has been very generous in its donations for the Winter Appeal. A big thank you to all involved in the donations and collections.

10:10 Project

Milad Khalil from Sydney Catholic Youth runs two catechesis sessions with year 10 students each term. Topics ranged from the Human Person, Truth and Freedom and Language of the Body. At the end of each term, students are invited back to Parish where they are able to discuss common ideas with peers from other schools and also celebrate Mass.

Mikaela Jaajaa: Throughout the 10:10 project in term 2, students learned important values and lessons relating to the modern society we live in. We discussed many of the issues of today’s world and how, at its core, these issues are caused by the increasing amount of people turning away from God through normalised activities and industries such as music, obsession with one’s self and social media. We learned how every day we are given choices to pick between what is good and what is sinful with the analogy of choosing between a beautiful, healthy banquet and junk food. Additionally, we learned that both men and women were made equal and complimentary and what love really means. The classes are a great experience which has taught us many lessons that we are able to apply to our everyday lives.

Evangelisation Days: Year 9 and Year 10 Evangelisation Day

LaSalle Bankstown was honoured to have hosted the Year 9 and Year 10 Evangelisation day run by Sydney Catholic Schools. Students were able to engage with their faith through guest speakers, confession and adoration, while also socialising with students from other schools. Our school band, led by Year 11 and 12 students with Ms Girogiutti and Mr Gullotta, warmed the crowd in preparation for the day with their beautiful pieces which left the crowd in awe. Fr William began the day with a Gospel reading and prayer with George A to initiate the theme of the day to “Spread the Good News of Joy, which then led into icebreakers and various engaging activities. Our students were exceptional in assisting with the setup of the event and ushered visiting staff and students around our school during the various activities. Our TTC yard held various pizza trucks, which the students enjoyed for lunch as they socialised and were able to engage in faith-filled dialogue with other students.

I learnt that I have a purpose in life and that I am the only me that there will ever be. I am “Made 4 More” than what others want me to be. I should not seek to change myself and be the same as everyone else, but seek for the true me that God wanted me to be. – George Abdnoor

I learnt that God’s rules are made to keep peace on earth and to help us keep a connection with God. If we can’t abide by these rules, we lose a connection with God as stewards of the earth. – Marko Matanovic

Faith in Action

Every Wednesday during lunch this year, students were invited to spend time in prayer. During Lent, students led a prayerful meditation through the Stations of the Cross. The month of May and October we offered to pray a decade of the Rosary, which helps us to connect with Mary and to pray for any personal intentions we may have. In Term 3 we were fortunate enough to have religion classes organise masses at lunch time led by Fr William. Students have loved spending this time in reflection in between the busyness of school and life.

Several Year 9 and 10 students attended the World Youth Day One Year Out Event, held at De La Salle Catholic College, Caringbah in August of this year. The event theme was, “Journey of Hope”. The students were able to explore the various pilgrimage options before travelling to the host city of Lisbon, which includes; Holy Land, Italy or Spain. The Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, Mr Tony Farley also shared his own personal experience of World Youth Day to the students and highlighted what an amazing opportunity this was for the students to not only experience new countries, cultures, meet new people and make friends but most importantly, grow their faith. – John Francis

We are looking forward to our journey to Lisbon, Portugal.

With Thanks Students have embraced Mary Mackillop’s “never see a need without doing something about it” and have preached the Gospel through their actions, through the various ministry activities this year, which they have led and supported. A big thank you to all staff who have taken time to also be the face of the Gospel, as they supervise and lead activities for the students, not only during school but also in the evening. For our students who are constantly volunteering and asking for more, you have shown the world that you are not “couch potatoes” as Pope Francis references it, but a generation who wants to make a change in the world.

World Youth Day Lisbon, Portugal 2023

Year 9 and 10 students are excited for the year ahead as they prepare for their pilgrimage to WYD in Lisbon Portugal. As the countdown to World Youth Day Lisbon takes shape, students have been engaged with all opportunities to develop their faith and get to know the students they will be travelling with.

Counsellor

Ittakes great courage for young people to reach out and seek help. Many of the issues our young people struggle with range from anxiety, depression, friendship and family issues just to name a few. It is a humbling experience when students entrust to us their innermost thoughts and feelings.

“Listening is often the only thing needed to help someone.”

By establishing a therapeutic relationship built on trust and unconditional regard, it is always our hope that students will begin to tell their story in a confidential space. Students are offered creative interventions, as well as Solution Focused and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, to help them to challenge negative thoughts that impact on their feelings and emotions and to help them to tell their story. Strategies to address various issues are explored with students, as well as working on developing resilience, recognising their strengths to build confidence and make effective changes.

Many years ago, when the counselling process was explained to a student, their reply was, “Miss, I just need you to listen to me.” Fundamentally young people crave to be seen for who they are without judgement and to be heard, especially in times when they feel isolated and when they find themselves entangled in friendship or family issues.

Mental health remains the main reason students seek counselling and it is important that complex cases are referred to external organisations such as Headspace, Corner Youth, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to name a few. It may also be a GP referral. Students are encouraged to participate in external counselling such as these, in order to be able to access ongoing support, especially during school holidays.

Once again we were fortunate to invite Nic Newling, founder of The Champions, to address Year 10 and Year 11 in Term 1 this year. Through storytelling, Nic was able to share his personal story and talk about the hidden reality of living with a mental illness at school and how to address it using empathy, understanding and peer support. Nic emphasised

the importance of speaking up and helping one another. The presentation was thought provoking, humorous, honest and most importantly, filled with hope. We look forward to inviting Nic to speak to students in 2023.

This year we said goodbye to Susie Stowe and welcomed Adriana Cvitan, who has joined the Counselling/Pastoral Care team at LaSalle Catholic College in 2022. Adriana has a background in psychology and psychotherapy and works with all students from Year 7 to Year 12 and is available 5 days a week. Adriana has been an invaluable asset and I look forward to working with her moving forward.

I am at LaSalle two days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) and remain an important part of the Pastoral Care team, also supporting students and parents from Year 7 to Year 12.

Adriana and I look forward to working with the wonderful community that is LaSalle Catholic College in 2023.

Saint Yon Trade Training Centre

Saint Yon

Captain

It has been an honour being elected as the first female Saint Yon Captain. With the addition of Human Services Individualised Support, the Saint Yon Trade Training Centre has greatly improved in encouraging students for future career paths and opportunities. From something that used to be nothing more than just a dream for me, has now become a reality.

The insight I have gained from this course has allowed me the confidence to pursue my dreams of becoming a nurse. I was greatly inspired by the efforts of healthcare workers, especially during the recent pandemic. This opportunity allowed me to truly understand the influence of healthcare services on not only individuals but also the fulfillment it provided for my heart.

Despite the challenges of online learning and the disruptions of our work placements, I am confident in saying that the future of healthcare is bright. This was only possible through the positive attitude we had in the classroom as well as the workplace. It allowed us to look past the daunting realities of healthcare and uplift our mentality. To be honest, I couldn’t have pursued this dream without the support of my classmates and teachers.

This quote encapsulates the mindset that allowed me to conquer my uncertainties while studying Human Services. Lets face it, no problem is too big for the 2022 nurses. After all the skills we have gained from making beds to pretending to be patients. Our learning will forever be retained along with our values. As the course comes to an end, I would like to thank all the generous teachers for dedicating their time to support our journey towards success.

year in the Vocational Education and Training environment, for students, trainers and admin staff. After two years of disruption, 2022 was a full year of work placements, record numbers of School Based Apprentices and Trainees (SBATs) and a greater interest by contractors in our VET students to progress into full time roles. There has never been a better time to study a VET course and transition into full time employment.

The demand for courses, SBAT roles and work opportunities has grown as students and parents realise the career landscape has been altered. What existed previously, in many cases has been impacted upon, and expectations and aspirations have been forced to re-align in a positive way. A wider choice of pathways has emerged showcasing Business Admin, Nursing and Beauty / Grooming Services.

Greater student choices has meant greater diversity within the Industry Based Learning group. Previously made up of male trade students, the IBL class now consists of female students committed to undertaking apprenticeships and traineeships in Nursing, Makeup and Business. A seismic shift but a modern and welcomed change that benefits all students.

Our partner colleges continue their lavish support, with their students’ appetite in courses offered at Saint Yon Trade Training Centre, increasing each year. Our ever expanding network of industry partners are so generous with their support of our students. We greatly appreciate their participation and involvement, without both, our VET programs would not exist.

Lastly, the St Yon Trade Training Centre staff both admin and trainers, under the astute stewardship of Mrs Phillips, deserve congratulations for their tireless efforts throughout 2022, to embrace the increased demands and still deliver. You make all the difference to the disengaged and unfulfilled by providing the light.

Teaching and Learning

Newman Selective

his was another very successful year for gifted education at LaSalle Catholic College. This was the first year that Newman classes were offered in Year 10 subjects and complete the College’s plan to incrementally introduce these extension classes in our Stage 4 and 5 grades. Across these four-year groups, 142 students at the College had their learning extended in 2022 through their enrolment in a Newman Religion, English, Maths, Science, History or Geography class, or a combination of these subjects.

At the conclusion of last year, the College achieved official accreditation as a provider of the Newman Selective Gifted Education Program. This process was overseen by a panel of experts including Bronwyn McLeod, author of several texts on curriculum differentiation and gifted education. The College was acclaimed for its holistic and systemic approach to meeting all standards towards the advanced level of the Gifted Education Standards Framework, for the authentic differentiated learning occurring at the College, and for its substantial framework for the systematic identification and tracking of gifted learners.

The College’s teaching staff continued to develop their professional practice and skills in catering to the needs of gifted learners. Several staff attained certification in Sydney Catholic Schools’ Gifted Education Online 1 and 2 courses, and several teachers of Newman classes completed action research projects that sought to embed social-emotional learning within different KLA programs.

Students were also provided with opportunities to celebrate their learning and achievements with members of the College community, family and friends. The annual Newman Symposium showcase returned, with students from each Newman class participating in order to celebrate the learning that had occurred throughout the year. Other internal and external competitions, including the LaSalle Writers’ Shield, the SCS sporting competition, and the SCS Eisteddfod competitions also provided students gifted in the creative and sporting domains the opportunity to share and celebrate their talents.

Partnerships with the primary schools in our network continued to grow stronger throughout the year. LaSalle played host to a range of extension and enrichment opportunities for students attending our feeder schools, including an inter-school public speaking competition, accelerated Mathematics classes, and enrichment classes for

Science and Art. It was also a pleasure to meet with parents and teachers from St Luke’s Primary School in Revesby for the first time, as this school joined our network of local Catholic primary and high schools.

I would like to thank the many teachers who now make up the Newman Team for their tireless and innovative work to extend and support the College’s gifted learners. I look forward to the many new learning experiences 2023 will bring to the College and the Newman Selective Gifted Education Program.

Diverse Learning

Don't

Hold Back ……were the words which opened our Staff Spirituality Day at Cronulla on the 1st July. These words rang true for the continuous efforts of all in Diverse Learning Needs this year. With schools back in full swing, it was time to make up for the separation of 2020-2021.

Sydney Catholic Schools offered some wonderful sporting opportunities in competitive levels, to our students with Diverse Learning Needs this year, ones in which to extend themselves, without holding back! In Term 1 Mrs Annmaree Adam, Mr Adam Westwood and Mr Anthony Clarke trained and transported an excited team of Year 7-8 students, to take part in a new initiative in Liverpool, called Goalball. It is a unified sports program consisting of students with and without disabilities. Our 7-8 Goalball team came 3rd in the competition. Another team of young players took up the opportunity to take part in a sitting Volleyball competition at Minto, in Term 3.

Goalball and Sitting Volleyball are both paralympic sports. Both of these opportunities have empowered our students to acquire skills in teamwork, communication, game play, social skills, physical literacy and empathy.

SCS

Our students in Diverse Learning Needs, learnt that you are far better not to hold back and to try something new, than to miss out on a new learning experience. In Term 3, another 3 students stepped out of their comfort zones and participated in Athletics Conference 4 (Multi-Class Events), at Homebush. We congratulate Marcus Rassios Year 10, Stephan Ghanem Year 8 and Alessandro Bileci Year 7 for representing us with pride.

As school returned to its familiar routines without any disruption this year, the natural rhythm of school life re-established itself firmly in our students' young minds. Assessment tasks and exams continued to prepare our students for the world ahead, learning that meeting our time commitments brings great rewards and builds confidence. Many students learnt that Diverse Learning Needs is not only a space in which to receive academic assistance, but also a space for times when a break was needed, for assistance with social skills, a space to learn how to manage schedules and time frames and more importantly a space in which judgement is not ever present.

Our dedicated team of teachers and Learning Support Officers continued to evolve with the natural flow of life.

Mr Ed Flood took up a wonderful new opportunity to work with youth in their transition to working life. We know Mr Flood will bring great gifts of faith and service to his new role, as he did during his time at LaSalle.

Mrs Julie Zic transitioned into Mr Floods position, working with Year 8 students. We enjoy borrowing Mrs Zics excellent Maths skills across our team!

Miss Erin Barlow (Learning Support Officer), transitioned on to a Y3-12 school, as a learning support officer. We wish Erin well in this new venture.

Mrs Bashi Singh, Mrs Vanessa Nguyen, Mrs Shelley Phillips and myself continued to work with our Year groups.

Mrs Sophia Oparcik and Mrs Nicola Pegum gave intensive support to students as well as continued work in Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy (MULTIliT).

Mrs Cheryl Newton devoted her technical skills to our students with sensory needs, hearing and vision impairment.

Our Learning Support Officers: Stefanie Breda, Sharan Jassal, Jodie Andary, Rana Tamer, Majda Kosovel and Eugenie Germanos made a very big difference in the lives of our students, every day. We thank them for the care given to our students who needed a little extra support.

Minimum Standards

Miss Paloma Zovko and Brother Gerald Barrett (volunteer) worked with our seniors, preparing them for this important milestone. Many students have continued to express their gratitude for this specialist tuition service at school. This year Brother Gerry was a pillar of support to the community of staff and students, living out as a true example to all, what it means to be a LaSallian. Thankyou Brother.

CLP - Covid Literacy Program

This year our school continued to receive funding, to run a targeted small group literacy tutoring program for Year 7-10, to assist students who may have been impacted by the

pandemic and remote learning. We were fortunate to have three wonderful covid literacy tutors: Mrs Marimar Salerno, Ms Jesinta Doumet and Mrs Caitlyn Mutya. A selection of students took part in group literacy sessions along with the opportunity to have individual tutoring for assessment support.

And so another year's end is in sight. We have certainly embraced new opportunities at LaSalle in 2022 to be

together in work, in sport, in teams and in leisure without hesitation, for we have all learned through this era that the future can be uncertain.

Let us continue to live out what was asked of us this year….

“Don’t hold back.”

EAL/D

Another year has flown past as quickly as the students have grown but this year was like no other year. Students and teachers had to re-adjust to full-time face-to-face teaching and learning. Due to remote learning, some students struggled to extend and, in some cases, maintain their English language skills. Learning and studying a new language requires lots of opportunities to practise.

The number of EAL/D (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) students who require intensive assistance has increased significantly. We also have three newly arrived students who are on the ‘Beginning’ level. These students are receiving specialist support in mainstream classes along with intensive support through a New Arrival program delivered onsite at LaSalle by Mrs Reddy. . .

New Arrival students are currently withdrawn from class for at least one period a day. In the withdrawal classes, specific language skills are focused on through the content covered in the mainstream class. The students need guidance with adjusting to a new school routine in a new cultural setting. These changes take time and need ‘shaping’.

Fortunately, we have two full-time teachers, Mrs Shameel Reddy and Mrs Soohee Apted supporting the EAL/D students. The school has also secured an additional teacher, Mrs Nicola Pegum to support the year 11 EAL/D students.

We thank the Learning Support coordinator who makes allowances for the Learning Support Officers and teachers to help whenever possible. A team approach to teaching and learning ensures the best possible outcome for all concerned.

Literacy

Ina post-online learning world, the importance of literacy has never been more evident. The Whole School Literacy Professional Development, which all staff attended on the final staff development day of 2021, was the impetus for the conversation about the literacy needs of students. The value of literacy in the College was then cemented through its inclusion as an integral aspect of the Annual Improvement Plan for 2022. The inclusion was directed towards supporting teachers in further improving the embedding of literacy strategies within programs to cater for the diverse needs and learning styles of students.

Guiding students in the transition back to face-to-face learning included prioritising the use of exercise books, while also balancing ICT use when appropriate and conducive to student learning. The increased use of exercise books has strengthened student capacity, partly impacting the growth in the College NAPLAN results this year.

The Committee - co-led by Mrs Balser (Leader of Teaching and Learning), Mr Cartledge (Instructional Specialist), and Ms Bou-Simon (Literacy Coordinator) – resulted in quality and targeted professional development created and delivered by the leaders and the following teachers: Ms Ayoub (Technological and Applied Studies), Mr Elias (Mathematics), Ms Eltarraf (Religion), Ms Fengitis (English), Mr Francis (Human Societies and its Environment), Mr Hannaford (Science), Ms Morrison (Creative and Performing Arts), Ms Reedy (English as an Additional Language), Mr Trevillion (PDHPE), and Ms Zovko (Diverse Learning Needs). The impact of this professional development will be seen in the future growth of student literacy skills in the domains of writing, reading, and speaking.

To assist in the strengthening of teacher and student agency, the Literacy Committee was formulated, with one staff member representing each KLA. Thus, the intention was to ensure that the students of the College were being supported across their studies. During meetings, student NAPLAN data and staff feedback were examined with the aim of providing the required training and targeted strategies to increase the already strong staff capabilities and renew student self-efficacy.

The Raz-Kids programme has returned due to the positive feedback from students in providing opportunities to practice their comprehension, reading, and fluency skills. Students were asked to use the program during their silent reading time at the beginning of their English lessons and were also encouraged in using it at home. This has made reading more accessible and achievable for students in Stage 4.

The accomplishments of 2022 could not have been possible without the efforts and support of all staff and students at LaSalle Catholic College. The College is committed to continuing to excel in literacy in all domains.

English

Year 12 reflect…

“Before I studied year 7-12 English, I was not aware of the vast vocabulary that existed. During my journey from year 7 to 12, studying English has positioned me to perceive not only different vocabularies and grammar, but has given me the skill of analysing texts. The English course has taught me the value of using language in its various textual forms, to become thoughtful and effective communicators in a diverse global world.”

“Learning English at LaSalle has been an experience to say the least. From year 7 through to 12, in particular the four very difficult years I spent with Mrs Barrington-Smith, I have learnt a great deal about the power and value of the English language, as well as how to better communicate my thoughts and ideas through a range of various forms.”

“My English experience has been a whirlwind of a journey since year 7. I feel that I’ve watched myself grow from someone who was scared to raise their hand, to someone who’s continually making conversation in class and answering questions.”

“Learning English has to do with darkness, an innate desire or perhaps a compulsion to enter the labyrinth of literary worlds, and with some luck, to bring something back out to the light. My journey is that kind of darkness, to pursue the truth and report with some diligence. Whether it is to illuminate Clooney's tuneful salute to ‘wires and lights in a box’, or love oneself with Shakespeare's long shadows cascading beyond crusty times, I cannot value the artists alone, but set eyes on the matriarch of B313 for beady-eyed critiques, among the dead (or living).”

“English is the art of articulation, composition and expression. The essence of English is embroiled in the never-ending usage of books and blue pens - a reflection of the hardships and accomplishments along the way. I have emerged rejuvenated by the effervescence of literature but, now, I must ‘set my indulgence free.’”

Creative &

Performing Arts

VISUAL ARTS

We welcomed Year 7 with opportunities to broaden their creative experiences by using many different materials and techniques while seeking inspiration from Impressionism, Surrealism and Pop Art. Year 8 stepped outside their comfort zone and ventured into the three-dimensional form of ceramics, producing unique and functioning vesselsreflecting the originality of each student.

In addition to underwater photography, Year 9 gained insight into the contemporary art practice of non-traditional materials, while Year 10 explored organic forms through a wide range of media. Our Stage 5 students pushed the boundaries of what can be considered ‘art’ - their bravery to try new things continues to be wonderful to see. In preparation for 2023, Year 11 fine-tuned and discovered additional skills in, and approaches to, drawing, photography, sculpture and painting.

The quality of the Year 12 bodies of work produced, and the diversity of concepts explored, reflects the enormous dedication required to complete the HSC major work. The resilience and persistence shown by the students throughout the lengthy process, is admired and appreciated.

MUSIC

Learning an instrument for the first time can be challenging. Year 7 worked tirelessly to learn the keyboard within their Music class as well as an orchestral instrument as part of the SCS Amadeus Music Program. Well done. Year 8 performed their favourite Rock ‘n Roll piece on guitar as part of an ensemble setting; further developing their skills and experience with Music in all its forms.

Our Year 9 students developed confidence and creativity via a range of opportunities. From composition, performance and the studying of Baroque and Popular music, to involvement with the Youth Ministry Band and the SCS Eisteddfod, Year 9 lay solid foundations for their future

years studying Music. Year 10 explored the significant role and contribution technology has towards the world of music. Students explored how to create songs and compose in a range of styles - including Jazz and World Music, with a focus on the Cuban genre.

Year 11 explored how Popular Music has evolved over time. Students were also provided with the freedom to choose which style of music they preferred to study, enabling and encouraging a greater range of skills, techniques and ideas to be acquired.

The HSC Encore showcase provided an opportunity for our Year 12 musicians to be inspired by the impressive calibre of previous HSC Music students. Year 12 worked incredibly hard on refining their ability to perform, compose and analyse music from different times, genres and artists. Many of the students are looking forward to post-school studies based on their musical interests and strengths.

DRAMA

Year 9 students developed their skills in group performance through improvisation and play building activitiesopportunities for the students’ confidence to grow. As part of the Commedia Dell’arte unit, students created striking masks, capturing a wide range of emotions and personalities.

Year 12 explored social and political Australian issues through the study of scripts, supporting their progression towards the HSC examination. Most notable, however, was the significant level of progress each student demonstrated throughout the year. Constantly refining and evaluating, all of the students expanded their unique skills and areas of strength. Well done Year 12 Drama!

DANCE

Year 9 Dance joined the Creative Arts subjects this year. Throughout the year, our first Dance students developed skills in composition based on stimulus. They also created dance films and worked solidly on a wide range of individual and group performances. The Creative Arts team looks forward to seeing the future pieces of this inaugural cohort.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES

Students and teachers involved with Creative Arts had the opportunity to be involved in several extra-curricular events this year. Music, Dance and Drama students participated in the Sydney Catholic Schools Eisteddfod. The effort of all

Mathematics

The overarching focus of the Mathematics Department in 2022 is the fostering of a ‘growth mindset’ in our students when it comes to their mathematical ability. Ideally, we want our students to be learners who see their current understanding as a platform on which to build, not an obstacle to be surmounted.

The Stage 4 teaching program is structured to differentiate each students’ learning and targeted to meet the needs of each individual. LaSalle is continuing a tutoring program in Numeracy this year to build students’ foundational skills for success in their current Stage 4 courses. I would like to thank Ms Vanessa Nguyen, Mrs Julie Zic and Br Gerald Barrett for their efforts.

In Stage 5, teachers work closely with the students to lay a foundation emphasising the importance of structured revision, which is done through well thought-out teaching and learning programs, catering to the diverse needs of our students.

Stage 6 is where we look to bring together a culmination of effective elements of learning to prepare our senior students for the rigours of the HSC.

Inquisitive Minds focuses on creating positive mathematical experiences for students. This year, Year 8,9 and 10 students attend a Talented Mathematicians Workshop entitled Problems, Patterns, Pictures and Puzzles. During this

workshop, students participated in an interactive lesson on strategic problem solving and worked on a series of original hands-on problems in a competitive relay.

At the forefront is the ability to personalise learning, working effectively in teams, using the teacher as a resource as well as understanding how to learn best. We thank our students for another wonderful and productive year of learning.

I wholeheartedly extend my thanks to Ms Martha Kazzi our Assistant Mathematics Coordinator, Mr Michael Elias, Mr John Gulabovski, Mrs Cindy Ngo, Mr Nabil Saad, Mrs Dana Patterson, Mr Boulos Mansour and Ms Cassandra Whitworth for their support and care for our students, promoting strong growth at the College.

PDHPE

2022 was a rough start for many as Covid again struck however, living with it became the new norm and as such school and life went on thankfully without the disruptions of the past. As such, we kicked off the new year with the Year 9 PASS surfing excursion to Cronulla attended by Ms Durante, Mr Westwood, Mr Daher and myself.

Other major events during the year included the Wheelchair Roadshow incursion for 10 PASS, the Values For Life incursion for Year 10, the Year 11 First Aid incursion and at the end of the year, the Year 8 water safety excursion to North Cronulla Beach and the Sydney Thunder leadership and cricket program for Year 7. Also during the year, the College took ownership of its new weights/workout room. It features a monkey bar matrix system along with a new treadmill, rower and elliptical as well as two new exercise bikes and free weights, see images below:

Year 9 PASS Surfing Report

“Sir this is only the second time I’ve ever been to the beach” Was one of the responses upon arrival at North Cronulla beach. Even though this comment was said in jest, it highlights the importance of such rich learning experiences for the students.

At 6:30 am there was a nice swell creating 3-foot waves perfect for our beginners unfortunately by 8 am it had vanished and we were left with shore dumpers. That said, we were blessed with a glorious day that allowed for lots of fun and learning to be had. The excursion wasn’t just about “surfing”. For example, the students were shown first-hand how a rip works, where the water moves and why and what to do if caught in one. Students swapped between ocean swims, riding body boards, beach relays and swimming in the rock pools. Along the way, a few waves were even caught.

Year 10 PASS Incursion Report

On Tuesday the 16th of March, Brendon from Wheelchair Sports NSW visited the College to present to the 10 PASS classes. The discussion centred on the importance of sport for all, how sports can be modified as well as reducing risktaking to improve safety. All the students and the teachers thoroughly enjoyed the experience of wheelchair basketball and the behaviour of the students was excellent.

Values for Life Incursion

A big thank you to Tim from Values for Life who presented to year 10 on the topic of “Risky Business and Decision Making”. It was a valuable experience with Tim bringing expert knowledge to the year group and drugs and how the brain worked and was affected by various drugs both short and long term and the impact on potential decision-making abilities. The day finished with mindfulness activities run by the PDHPE department that were all appreciated by the students.

Moving forward, next year the department will consolidate its growth with at least 9 senior classes. This is a testament to the outstanding work by staff over the last couple of years and is very exciting for the future. Especially considering the effect it has on the student body as they are able to choose subjects that complement their learning needs. Last year the department had some outstanding HSC results in both CAFS and PDHPE, especially CAFS with 3 bands 6’s and considering it was the first cohort to complete the HSC.

Hopefully, 2022 will see a return to business as usual, especially considering excursions and incursions and teaching and learning. I would like to thank the department: Ms Dagher, Mr Daher, Ms Durante, Mrs Meli, Mr Raptis, Mrs Turiano and Mr Westwood for all their excellent work during the year.

“Hopefully, 2022 will see a return to business as usual, especially considering excursions and incursions and teaching and learning.”

Science

2022 has been a productive and rewarding year for both students and staff in the Science department, here at LaSalle Catholic College Bankstown. After a couple of disrupted years that restricted students' practical engagement in Science, it was pleasing to see teachers and students getting right back into a range of exciting and engaging practical activities in the laboratories. This led to a deepening and strengthening of scientific understanding that has laid the foundation for future scientific study.

Years 8 & 9 and Year 12 Biology were able to investigate anatomical structures, through the dissection of organs including brains, hearts and eyes (all from sheep). Year 7 performed an assessment, to build and analyse the performance of a mousetrap car, whilst Year 8 built models of body systems. Year 10 were able to extract DNA from strawberries, whilst Year 9 built a plethora of electrical circuits, that model those found in the home. Activities such as these, provided an opportunity for students to not only engage with concepts in a practical sense, but help to strengthen collaborative relationships with their peers.

2022 also saw the return of various excursions and incursions, which started with Year 9 attending the Science Space discovery centre in Wollongong. There, students marvelled at various hands-on scientific exhibits, providing students with a sense of amazement and wonder that can only be gotten through scientific exploration. Year 11 Biology

travelled into the rainforest at Mt Keira for a field study, requiring them to utilise their knowledge to analyse the features of the ecosystem. Year 7 participated in a STEM day (in conjunction with the Mathematics and Technology departments), whereby students undertook various activities that tested their teamwork, creative and critical thinking abilities. Year 12 Biology, Chemistry and Physics students engaged with researchers from Sydney University through virtual labs, to gain an insight into how scientific concepts can be investigated using sophisticated laboratory equipment.

It is through the hard work and dedication of the entire Science department, that these experiences could be provided to the students to not only provide them with a sense of wonder, but an opportunity to see the relevance of science in everyday life.

Technologies

The technologies department had a makeover in 2022 with fresh new staff added to the department. Benjamin James a specialist timber teacher, Leanne Hodge a specialist food technology and textiles teacher and Jacoub Chamoun a specialist technology teacher. These new staff members have added a new spark to the technology department, making it ever growing with a range of classes. The Technology subjects at LaSalle Catholic College throughout 2022 were: Technology Mandatory (Yr 7 & 8), Food Technology (Yr 9 & 10), Information Software Technology (Yr 9 & 10), Industrial Technology (Yr 9 -12), and Information Processes and Technology (Yr 11-12).

Stage 4

Year 7 completed a cross-curricular unit with science where they learned engineering concepts with the use of forces taught throughout their science classes. Year 7 created a glider and a mousetrap-powered car. The programming language year 7 used to configure a fitness tracker is python. Students explored endless possibilities of coding in digital technology. While maintaining a community garden year 8 was able to plant the seeds to a range of herbs and vegetables and use them in their meals in their food technology unit from paddock to plate. Students created aprons in textiles throughout their material technology unit and explored laser cutting and engraving using specialised software.

Stage 5

This year was a spectacular year where year 9 and 10 experienced increased practicals putting theory into practice. In multimedia, students were introduced to application development software and created customised

applications. Through Information Software Technology students programmed robots to create a sequence of movements, while in Textiles, our new addition in Stage 5 students explored fabrics, furnishings, and costume design. Students created their own pyjamas using new skills acquired in their practical lessons. Industrial Technology Timber is always a popular course in stage 5 where students learn the properties of timber through practical experiences such as creating coffee tables, kitchen tidy, and serving trays.

Stage 6

Industrial Technology students created amazing videos and even more challenging games this year, as well as sophisticated coffee tables and entertainment units. It is with great honour to have a class complete Industrial Technology Timber as it has been missed for a number of years, not acquiring the minimum numbers to run a class. These projects were larger and more articulate than in previous years.

It is a particularly popular place for students to meet at lunchtime as we provide many board games, cards, and a giant chess set for the students’ enjoyment. We regularly change our displays to keep the Learning Centre always looking fresh and appealing; hopefully creating a space where the students feel welcome and happy to be in.

Our students at LaSalle are fortunate to have available to them a very well stocked Library Collection of books which we usually add to every couple of weeks. There is a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books available to them, including many genres such as Fantasy, Science Fiction, Classics and Manga to name a few. Students are encouraged to borrow books either as a hard copy or alternatively as an ebook or audio-book. The Library staff aim to order in books that will be both interesting and popular with the students, while being mindful to cater for the wide range of ages and abilities. Our goal is to have every LaSalle student seeking to borrow and read books!

Student Comments for the Year Book 2022 from the Learning Centre

The Learning Centre offers an environment where students socialise, work together, learn, and play games. It’s a place filled with books that students may borrow. Moreover, the learning centre provides games including cards, chess, and many other board games. The staff works to foster a reading habit and increase the levels of information literacy throughout the school; hence our school library is greatly taken care of by the centre’s librarians.

The Learning Centre here at Lasalle Catholic College Bankstown is a wonderful quiet place for students to study, relax or read a book from, the learning centre provides a wide variety of activities for students to enjoy this can range from giant chess to other fun board games. I find myself there almost everyday, studying and hanging out with friends. The learning centre provides a wide variety of services such as printing, requests for new books, laptop repairs, and even private rooms to study in. I highly recommend you visit the learning centre if you like to have some quiet time to relax, play fun board games or read a book.

Benildus Report

2022,

What an exquisite year to witness our community and sporting teams grow and model young Lasallians’ potential for a faith-filled and inclusive community. As captains, the satisfaction of witnessing the diverse culture and ambition of one’s love and gratitude that is carried throughout the years empowers us to overcome any obstacles or adversities faced. Through our iconic motto, “commitment, confidence and success” we are able to develop resiliency.

Having the honour of taking on this responsibility of being Benildus Sport Captains gave us the ultimate opportunity to demonstrate our commitment and leadership abilities, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and social skills. Which enables us to collaborate successfully via harmony.

This year has been a memorable and fulfilling experience of excitement and dedication within the community. Losses and Wins allowed us to become motivated and lead us on a path of success. Through the tribulations and hardships faced, we as Captains are delighted to report that we are proud of the hard work that young Lasallains have put in despite the Covid-19 pandemic in the last year. The motivation and spiritual enthusiasm was still brought alive, enabling us to excel, achieve and overcome difficulties.

The eagerness shown throughout the year, from the contribution to the swimming carnival to the participation and war cries heard during the athletics carnival, was nothing less than incredible. Our fondest memories from the carnivals are hearing the underlying enthusiasm and passion in every young lasallians and the incredible amount of energy the entire house brought to both carnivals. We

have always looked up to the house captains since Year 7 as they all consistently serve as role models for us. Who would have thought that five years later, we would be serving the same role for the younger year groups. As the house captains of Benildus 2022, it has unquestionably been an experience that will not be forgotten.

As the captains of Benildus, we would like to express our appreciation to all the teachers and Year 12 students who have supported us along this journey. We believe that their encouragement, support and motivation helped us to perform to the best of our ability and reinforced our friendship, which had a great influence on our peers and younger year groups.

To the future captains of Benildus, we would like to wish you and the house the greatest success in all aspects of the Lasallian spirit including sports, academics, and extracurricular activities. We believe in you, and that you will be able to keep the house united in victory or defeat. Remember to keep your spirits filled with love towards our LaSallian community and appreciate the hard work that our teachers put in for us to have many memorable years.

Liesse Report

Asthe leaders of the Liesse house, our main goal was to create a strong connection and bond with the Liesse community. Through having this opportunity, it is clear that we have successfully succeeded in this mission. We both strived to promote characteristics of resilience, confidence and commitment to Liesse. The past year has been an incredible experience for us both and it has been an honour to have led the Liesse house.

Our lady of Liesse, the Queen of schools was with us and presented every step of the way. From our well deserved victories in the numerous races in the swimming and athletics carnivals, to the certain individuals who helped us on our journey. It was filled with absolute passion and utter spirit, creating memorable moments that will stay with us forever.

Our house of Liesse exhibited strong fighting spirits and determination in all of our college events. We were able to live up to our title when winning the swimming carnival by flying colours. With the help of Liesse, and all of our swimmers, we came out victorious. Although we were unable to hold our previous title of also winning the athletics carnival, we were able to win the war cries after a number of years. With the support of our house, determination and drive to win, as well as new additional war cries , we were able to beat Miguel in war cries after a number of years.

The Swimming Carnival of 2022 was a day we would never forget. That day expressed the commitment of Liesse though separated by year groups. With that commitment came the confidence of every swimmer which had led to our winning success. We would like to share our 1st place victory with all of LaSalle as we celebrate this ongoing victory. The participation of everyone was amazing and that showed how grateful we are for leading a community filled with dedicated individuals

The Athletics Carnival of 2022 was just as amazing. Though not winning, it was an enjoyable day for all. Having the chance to encourage our house a week before the carnival, it paved the way for us to lead the house in both championship and non-championship games. Though coming second, winning the war cries against Miguel was the highlight of that day for the house and had revealed to us the determination of everyone outside of Liesse. The sportsmanship and bond across the entire school that had been created throughout the day are memories that will last forever. We are thankful for everyone’s commitment and encouragement that day.

We would like to personally thank Mrs Patterson, Mrs Barrington-Smith and all the other teachers for the constant support and motivation towards the Liesse house, upholding and enhancing the Lasallian Spirit. Furthermore, we would like to thank Ms Nemer, our year coordinator since year 10, who has guided and influenced us to who we are today. We wish all future Liesse captains the best of luck as we ask LIESSE ARE YOU READY?

67Yearbook 2022

2022 has been a difficult year. Despite all this, we can say without a shadow of a doubt it was an extraordinary one. Miguel has been the home to so many students and finally, after 3 years, we won the athletics carnival. This year was unconventional and for the first time, the house captains were decided based on gender, but we believe that we make an excellent team, as made evident through our win. We are so proud to see the many young athletes showing their true gifts in the pool or on the track, and like every Miguellian before us, with a loud voice and house pride. Being selected as house captain was a tremendous honour and privilege. It gave us the ability to build vital and practical leadership and teamwork skills for the future.

If memory serves us well, this may have been the greatest year of involvement from junior students. During these post-lockdown times, we are very happy to see so many students participate and so proud of those who won races in their respective age categories. We are so joyous that this immense effort was successful in helping us to win the athletics carnival.

The involvement of all the Miguellians through sports, discipline and school work is a perfect testament to our eternal spirit and commitment to the college. Their unmatched spirit of Miguel could be felt all throughout the school, especially through times of competitiveness and academics; we may not always win, but we never go out without our voices being heard.

Overlooking the results and final standings, the Miguel House has experienced another successful year—the spirit and sense of community among the Red House have created

everlasting memories and friendships that we will continue to have for the rest of our lives. The entire student body of Miguel consistently demonstrated qualities of generosity through their contributions to both the school and the community. We would like to thank the entire Miguel House, both students and teachers, for their efforts throughout the year. Their contributions went not unnoticed and are greatly appreciated by the whole Miguel team. Thank you all for such an amazing and memorable last year. We are forever grateful.

Turon Report

Themighty, mighty Turon never failed to show commitment and success in all that we were involved in this year. Whether it be during the Swimming or Athletics Carnival or outside the sporting domain, the true Turon spirit and sportsmanship bled through. Such unity left us grateful to have led a charismatic and hard-working team this year.

Yes, this year’s competition with our friendly rivals, Liesse and Miguel, dominated both Swimming and Athletics Carnivals but watching the determination and effort exercised by the young men and women was outstanding. The Swimming Carnival saw Turon participating well in the pool, with students obtaining 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings. But this was incomparable to the prevailing atmosphere of unity and courage displayed on the stands, together as one house. This is what makes one watch in awe, just for a moment, and the somber feeling of having to leave this beautiful, tight-knit community sets in during such moments.

Yet, the Athletics Carnival was definitely one to remember. The athletic abilities of Turon were on display throughout the championship and the non-championship events. Every challenge was met with a participant from Turon who overcame it all and strove for success. Though 1st place was yet again out of our reach, there is a lesson in failure; one must simply pick themselves up and try again! Seeing the vivacity of spirit riled up through competition and the determination to prove oneself on the track is incredible.

Congratulations to Liesse and Miguel on their separate victories for each Swimming and Athletics Carnivals - truly well deserved. 3rd place is definitely not where Turon belongs; rest assured, we have faith that this house will climb the ranks in the following years, and return to its rightful place as the house that always places first. There is a legacy that must be made anew.

However, while both carnivals are the focal events of every sporting year, I must draw attention to the generosity

and courage of the house outside of the sporting domain. Through active volunteering for the school; through Project Compassion, the Vinnies Appeal, general fundraiser events and school-specific events such as Open Day, the Turon family across all year groups have taken an active role in their schooling and community life at the College. A phenomenal display of living out the teachings of the martyrs of Turon.

We thank the Turon House wholeheartedly for giving us a momentous last year at this College, especially as your house captains for 2022. Your commitment to this small family has inspired an immeasurable amount of pride. To our homeroom teachers, and our year coordinator, Ms Nemer, thank you for supporting our journey as students and captains. And to our Year 12 cohort, your assistance and encouragement alone made all of our achievements possible.

As we bid Turon farewell, it is essential to reflect on the leadership role we both have had in the experience of the undertaking. It has definitely been a memorable one. Fellow Turon members, try your hardest and excel, even when the prospects seem dull. After all, 3rd place is better than last. Let’s go Turon, allez, allez, allez!!

Creative Arts

partnered as Creative Arts captains at LaSalle Catholic College, we have been honoured to be part of a growing community that showcases raw talent from all aspects of the Creative Arts Department. We are deeply grateful to the staff and executive team for making this year an enjoyable ride and trusting us with the role of creative arts captains. We are immensely proud of everyone who has contributed to our Creative Department, allowing our College to showcase the creative journeys of individuals.

The Creative Arts department has expanded immensely over the past few years and the many talents of our students have been showcased at a number of events that the College has participated in. Participating in the Eisteddfod for Creative Arts has reaped many rewards for our students, with many performances placing first and second. Namely;

Senior Contemporary Ensemble (first place)

Intermediate Rock band (first place)

Drama piece (second place)

Folk Dance (first place)

This not only motivated our students to keep pushing and explore further what they love but feel proud of the opportunity they came across and the level of skill shown to be able to take multiple trophies back to our community. As the two creative arts captains, no words can express the level of happiness we all felt from all the students that contributed to taking home trophies.

The introduction of the Amadeus program for the first year ever for our junior students has given them an excellent opportunity to explore the many instruments of the orchestra and hopefully continue to learn and perfect their skills. This program provides students with music lessons and small group tuition by specialist music tutors, which allows them to adopt the knowledge and to think musically, which will, later on, assist individuals with their ability to learn new things. As Creative Arts Captains, there were times when we would go and visit classes during their program and listen to the ensembles they'd been practising for days. This showed the appreciation we had for our junior students and prompted them to adopt new skills.

We would like to appreciate all of our senior creative arts students particularly. The time, effort and dedication that you have put into your Major Works, as well as theory work, is outstanding. You have paved the way for a bright and successful future for the Creative Arts department of the College. Being a part of this legacy would not have been possible though without the guidance of our teachers who have spent countless hours coordinating and supporting us in order to achieve the best we can. Thank you for fostering our talents in the classroom so that we can illustrate them in the real world. A massive thank you to:

Ms Giorgiutti (Year 12 Music)

Ms Maude (Year 12 Art)

Mr Obeid (Year 12 Drama)

To our other Creative arts teachers, Mrs Woods, Mr Gullotta and Miss Morrison, your work does not go unnoticed and we appreciate the hard work you've put in with building our younger students to appreciate the Arts and hopefully continue to build upon their talents.

We wish all students the best of luck with their creative journeys and believe in their never-ending potential to become the individual they wish to be.

Our

Year 7

Consideringthe previous two years of largely online learning, Year 7 have settled in well and become a community of their own, and have greatly contributed already to the wider LaSalle community, they are now very much a part of. With the far-flung buildings and fields, so many new friends and faces, and a variety of subjects and teachers, they have found their rhythm and direction as LaSalle students.

“With the far-flung buildings and fields, so many new friends and faces, and a variety of subjects and teachers, they have found their rhythm and direction as LaSalle students.”

The highlight for many was the School Camp at Collaroy where we headed off to The Collaroy Centre for a night away with a number of activities, meals, and adventures together. The option was available to get outside in the rain and enjoy the activities planned which we took and all got very wet and muddy from head to toe. High ropes, abseiling, laser tag and the giant swing were some of the challenges. A night hike down to the beach was an adventure we will not forget along with the late night, and then early wake up, sharing cabins with lots of new friends. It was so much fun that most people used the bus ride home to catch up on their sleep.

The ping of Table Tennis balls being hit skillfully back and forth has become part of the Year 7 activities each break time and, on a Friday, the Amadeus Music Program contributes further to the evolving soundscape.

The FSC Outreach program was taken up as a challenge to get involved and serve the community in the LaSallian

way and the growing mountain of Merit Awards led to an impressively high rate of Bronze Awards and now Silver Awards being presented, celebrated and shown off with pride on the new blazers worn to and from school each day.

One Wednesday we enjoyed a live performance called The Hurting Game and, later on, a significant group of Year 7s volunteered to compete in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee and with one student progressing to the State Final where his score was commendable.

Throughout the year we had a number of sessions with Year 10 students leading us through the Peer Support program. It really grew as the weeks progressed and we got to know the older students who equally got to know us.

An unforgettable event for us was the Mission in Action Day (MAD) Day, where Year 7 excelled with their various fundraising efforts – from the hanging donut competition to the finest ice cream in Bankstown.

The Grand Finale, celebrating with a picnic to Cronulla Beach, capped off a truly memorable first year where the foundations were laid with good friendships and solid commitments to study, looking forward to the next few years together.

Year 8

No longer the new kids on the playground, it was wonderful to see these young boys and girls starting to gain more confidence and finding their feet at LaSalle Catholic College.

This year saw Year Eight reflect on their progress, we focused on them taking greater responsibility for their own learning as well as setting short and medium-term goals for the year. I would like to thank parents and guardians for their support as we believe a student is most successful when we work together as a supportive team.

Our students were rewarded for their positive contribution to College life and it was a highlight of the week to award students with their Bronze and Silver Awards in recognition of their consistent efforts. This year we also saw a return to many opportunities to engage in activities such as sports, instrumental music and debating.

Academically they have faced and conquered many challenges after many disruptions to their learning due to previous pandemic lockdowns. This year also saw them take more of an active role in their learning as they for the first time in their academic journey had the opportunity to select electives for their Stage 5 learning.

The cohort was supported by a stellar team, I wholeheartedly extend my appreciation to the Homeroom team, Ms Emma Watson, Ms Rebecca Kalaitzis, Mr Anthong Duong, Mrs Kristen Roehrig, Ms Gewnda Maude, Mr Michael Gioiello and Mr Khodr Obeid; for their mentoring and guardianship of their students throughout the year.

We had wonderful presentations on Bullying from Backflip Bullying and supported our students’ mental health with guest speakers from Lifeline and Butterfly Foundation. We also celebrated the achievements of 2022 with our annual end-of-year picnic at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, where a fun time was had by all who attended.

Congratulations Year Eight on a year that represented your continuing journey of maturity and academic growth, but more importantly one that has set down solid roots in our Lasalle community.

Year 9

Year 9 has flourished in 2022 as they moved towards becoming caring, active and confident young adults. They enjoyed their first ‘full’ high school year after a disrupted experience in Years 7 and 8.

It has been a privilege getting to know this amazing group of students who surprised me daily with their talents, humour and positive energy. Year 9 has grown immensely over the course of 2022 and should be commended for their positive impact on the school community. Our students have always been the first to put their hand up and give their time to our LaSallian community. Students volunteered as Open Day guides, Altar Servers, peer mentors, and Faith in Action participants. Thank you for your contributions!

A number of our students were involved in extracurricular activities in 2022. Year 9 was the most represented group in Debating and Public Speaking. Twelve of our students proudly represented the college every Friday night and in many instances won their debates. The musical talents of our students were showcased at the SCS Eisteddfod. The Year 9 Rock Band came first against schools from all over the diocese - a testament to their hard work and talent!

A highlight of 2022 was our camp, which was held at the Great Aussie Bush Camp in Kincumber. Students were pushed out of their comfort zone and made memories that will

last a lifetime. They came out tired, muddy and happy, having bonded with their close friends. It was a fantastic experience for all!

A heartfelt thank you must be given to the hard-working and caring homeroom teachers - Mr Krystan De Guzman, Ms Paloma Zovko, Ms Soohee Apted, Ms Christina Breda, Ms Cheryl Newton, Mr John Gulabovski and Mr Andrew Mikhael. Your leadership and guidance have imparted lifelong lessons to the Year 9 cohort - thanks for such a great year!

Lastly, thank you to Year 9 for welcoming me as your coordinator this year. I hope that you have as many fond memories of the year as I do. Good luck and God bless Year 9 as you move forward into a new stage of your schooling life. Thank you for being such kind and generous young people. I wish you all the best for the future.

Year 10

Oneof the most rewarding aspects of my time as Year 10 coordinator this year has been the opportunity to watch these fine young men and women mature. It has been a privilege to walk with these students through their junior years of schooling. For most of this year, year 10 focused on setting goals and making choices as they moved onto pathways of senior study. It has been such a joy to listen to their future aspirations while it feels like only yesterday they started as naive year 7 students. How time flies!

“The way they look after the last, the lost and the least constantly reminds me that the LaSallian charism is truly at work in their hearts.”

The trust and sense of family we have built is precious to me. We have stood together through tough times and laughed together in times of joy. It has been a busy year with plenty of ups and downs. The resilient nature of this cohort is admirable. Their support of one another and care for each other is so special to witness. The way they look after the last, the lost and the least constantly reminds me that the LaSallian charism is truly at work in their hearts. Their personal growth was evident in their service to each other, generosity in their time, and reverence in prayer.

My sincere thanks goes to the wonderful Year 10 homeroom teachers: Ms Natalie Bou-Simon (10.1), Ms Renee Fengitis (10.2), Ms Jocelin Dagher (10.3), Mrs Nellie Dagher (10.4), Mr Nicholas Gullota (10.5) and Mr Peter Cartledge (10.6). The growth and maturity of the students is evident through the genuine care and commitment of these pastoral care teachers. Just as it takes ‘a village to raise a child’, this team tended to the varying needs of the students with genuine concern and a positive attitude. I have loved working with you all and I know the students have appreciated your efforts too.

Year 10, my wish is that your senior years are successful and enjoyable. I hope that you make the most of the facilities at LaSalle and the knowledge of your educators, who will support you through the years ahead. Congratulations on completing year 10 and I wish you well for the years ahead.

Year 11

In2022, the Year 11 cohort (Team Geese) began their journey. A journey that would challenge them to seek answers to questions such as: What was their purpose? What did they stand for? What did they value? and What choices could they make that would positively impact the College community.

Beverly Sills

The journey would also challenge them to manage those times of doubt, struggle, fear, uncertainty and disappointments.

As the journey progressed, they were encouraged to be there for each other, to reach out to those in need, to give humbly, to laugh, and to see the face of God in each other. In accepting these challenges, the Year 11 cohort exemplified a spirit and a sense of pride that allowed them to shine for others.

I thank their Homeroom teachers, Miss Saad, Miss Morrison, Mr Trevillion, Mrs Barrington-Smith, Miss Blinkhorn and Mr Brown for their guidance and insistence on encouraging those under their care to be the best versions of themselves.

I would also like to acknowledge the assistance of our College Counsellors Miss Cvitan and Mrs Azize, for their gentle interactions with our students.

Our journey continues TOGETHER, and we look forward to a Year of growth encompassing confidence, commitment and success!

We are LaSalle and proud to be!

Debating and Public Speaking

Debating

LaSalle Catholic College had an incredibly successful 2022 season of Debating. We had 45 students from Years 7-12 involved in the 12 teams of Debating this year; the most we have had in the last four years. LaSalle was involved in 5 debates against other Catholic Schools involved in the CSDA Debating Competition, which includes over 100 Catholic schools in the Sydney metropolitan area.

We had a positive year of debating in 2022, with a combination of passionate expert debaters and new members, which established a supportive environment where all students had the opportunity to represent the College. What I found most endearing was the support that all students provided each other every Friday evening, where a number of students were happy to join the teams to be audience members. When we visited other schools, our bus was always full of laughter and positivity, whether we won the debates or not. All students involved showed maturity and showcased their Lasallian values when we hosted other schools at the campus. We consistently received positive feedback from our visiting schools.

The passion, excitement and positivity that all students possessed in Debating this year would have been impossible without the dedicated teachers who supported both the students and myself. Mr Peter Cartledge, Ms Bou-Simon and Ms Nasr were consistent and significant in their support and guidance throughout LaSalle’s involvement in the competition. Furthermore, Mr Clarke and Ms Glynatsis dedicated their Friday evenings to adjudicating our debates, which I am incredibly grateful for. It is very difficult to ask both students and teachers to sacrifice several hours on Friday nights to debating and as a result, your efforts are much appreciated.

Finally, I hope to continue the success that LaSalle experienced this year in both Public Speaking and Debating into 2023. I would like to encourage parents and families to

continue their support for our students and motivate them to be involved in this challenging, yet extremely fulfilling experience. Thank you for your continued generosity and enthusiasm that inspires our students to continue to do so well.

Public Speaking

Students from LaSalle Catholic College were involved in the CSDA Public Speaking competition this year, where they were required to plan and deliver speeches via Zoom. This year, our students spoke on a range of topics that focused on some of society’s most significant issues; the degradation of the English language; the rise of social media and its impact on young people, and the journey of migrating to Australia. Their audiences were engaged by their content, but also through the valuable insights and perspectives that our students provided.

LaSalle was proudly represented by… Not only were each of their speeches of a high standard, but their support for each other through each of the speeches was something to be admired. In the last four years that I have run the competition, this year was the first time that two of our students made it to the Grand Final. A special congratulations to Houda Albaba in Year 8 and Verica Minovska in Year 12 who successfully made it to the Grand Final round of the competition. In particular, Verica Minovska placed fourth in the entire competition - an incredible achievement!

The students involved in the competition would not have felt as comfortable and driven without the guidance and support of several LaSalle teachers. The presence of these teachers led to the joyful, fun and supportive atmosphere, despite the daunting experience of presenting a speech through Zoom. A particular thank you to Mr Michael Egan and Ms Leonie Dowd for supporting our students in their participation in the Grand Final.

Eisteddfod

TheSCS Eisteddfod was an amazing experience for both the junior and senior LaSalle bands to apply their musical talents and put on a show. The event displayed the amazing musicians of Sydney Catholic Schools featuring a variety of categories that catered to different band skill levels.

The all-day event featured pop songs of different genres, from Rock to RnB to Jazz, all performed exceptionally. Despite the many challenges we faced, including band members going down to illness and forgotten equipment, we all had a great time with our junior band performing “Hold the Line” by Toto, achieving a score of 98 out of 100 and my senior band performing “Shackles” by Mary Mary, achieving a perfect 100 and being deemed “the best band of the day”, jamming out on stage and letting the music take control of us!! Of course the cherry on top were the two first place trophies we brought back to school. We all practised very hard and put a lot of effort into our performances. We developed and grew in our musical ability, and we are all excited to continue our musical journey, especially for the SCS winners showcase that is to be held later this year.

From both bands we give a massive thank you to the coordinating teachers Mrs Woods, Ms Giorgiutti and Mr Gullotta for giving the opportunity to use our talents and develop as musicians, and for helping us to prepare for our performances. Another thank you to Tom the bus driver who took us to and from the venue.

We competed in our first-ever Eisteddfod competition and I was really excited about it as it is something I’d never done before! The audience at the competition was very supportive and made the experience much more enjoyable and positive. The band members were well-rehearsed as we had been practising together since late last year.

The song we rehearsed for the competition was 'Hold the Line' by Toto. I had never played a guitar solo before, and Mr Gullotta taught me how to create one. Other members in the band had never played instruments before, and Sir worked with us closely to ensure we were ready to play as a band, and that our stage presence matched our newly formed musical abilities.

As a band, I can confidently say that each band member impressed one another, both in practice and on the day of the competition. Every person gave their all. This result led us to receive the 1st place trophy! So I’m very excited about next year's Eisteddfod and the competitors we will be up against.

Recreational and House Sport

Years 7 – 8

In Term 1, Year 7 students were involved in a swimming program at Auburn Aquatic Centres. The students participated in an 8-week program aimed at improving their swimming skills and water safety.

Students in Years 7 - 8 also participated in house sports every Thursday afternoon. House groups played a variety of sports throughout the year against one another. Sports included Oz-Tag, Touch Football, Soccer, Tag Gridiron, Basketball, T-Ball and European Handball. Playing these sports gave the students the opportunity to improve their overall fitness, develop new skills and enhance community spirit.

Students in Years 7 and 8 also participated in the Sporting Schools Program. With this program, the students had the opportunity to work with Cricket NSW and Touch Football Australia.

Years 9 – 10

Students in Years 9 and 10 were involved in elective sports in 2022. During sport each Thursday the students would attend the Gym or Table Tennis. Students also had the opportunity to choose Bankstown PCYC as an elective. PCYC provides an indoor soccer area, weights area, table tennis and a snooker table.

I would like to thank all teachers involved in our college sports program. Without the help of enthusiastic and energetic staff, students would not have the opportunity to develop their skills and participate in a wide range of activities.

Farewell

Year 12

Year 12

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2022 – You’ve officially made it! My journey with this cohort began in 2018, as a Year 8 English and HSIE teacher. Our paths continued to cross through the years, most notably in 2020 as their Year Coordinator. It has been a privilege to work with this cohort for the last three years and I’m proud of how far they have come.

The students have overcome the challenges of senior school and the Higher School Certificate, demonstrating their maturity and focus on their studies. They took the theme of “Kindness” and grew together following the idea that “in a world where you can be anything, be kind”. They demonstrated this through their words and actions, particularly through their courage to stand up for one another.

The Year 12 Leadership team have led and participated in a variety of initiatives, living out the values of St John Baptist De LaSalle. College Captains and Vice Captains; Victoria Solole, Jeremy Hanna, Kiara Hearne and Levi Gooding have led the College during assemblies, masses and Mission Action Day.

The College Sports and House Captains; Natalie Al-Habib, Elias Albaba, Rouzana Alkhouri, Maksim Jovanoski, Joy Mensah, Verica Minovska, Said Said, Angelique Saveski, Joseph Tannous and Stefan Trpkovski have actively participated and encouraged many of the senior students to represent the College in extracurricular activities including Swimming, Athletics, Soccer and Football. They have also inspired junior students of their houses to compete in both the swimming and athletics carnivals.

Our St Yon Captain; Jenny Thich and Creative Arts Captains; Rebecca Hadchiti and Danny Elzarif have displayed their leadership qualities within their areas of specialisation and were always willing to volunteer their time to help the staff.

The LaSallian Captains; Zein Issa and Joel Tarabay followed Christ’s example of leadership, that “we lead not to be served but to serve” as they attended various LaSallian functions, organised and participated in fundraising initiatives and encouraged a sense of community. Zein and Joel demonstrated their commitment to the college through their organisation and preparation for Cultural Day and the Year 12 Movie Night.

Thank you to all the Year 12 teachers and those who have taught them in previous years, your time, support and efforts haven’t gone unnoticed and year 12 truly appreciates

it. Thank you to the Year 12 homeroom team, Ms Woods, Ms Harb, Mr Francis, Ms Nehmee, Mrs Patterson, Mr Mansour and Mr Brown. You have ensured that the students have had a positive start to each day and have always been welcoming and kind. A special thank you to the support staff - the groundsmen, office ladies, Diverse Learning team and school counsellors, who have all worked tirelessly behind the scenes to provide a safe, inclusive and effective learning environment.

Finally, to the graduating class of 2022, thank you for choosing to be kind. You have grown into such amazing, compassionate and mature young people and I’m so very proud of you. Reflecting on our time together, I will remember the laughs in the B Block, the intense handball and soccer competitions and the random lunch chats. I think when it's all over, it just comes back in flashes and you’ll enjoy the memories we’ve shared at LaSalle. I wish each and every one of you the best for your future endeavours and hopes our paths cross again.

Remember, to not only be kind to others but also to be kind to yourself.
