Cheserek and McGorty, along with Jake Leingang, 4th here a year ago, and Sam Wharton, the Nike Cross Nationals winner, separated themselves from a large pack late in the race, but only McGorty was able to mount any sort of challenge to Cheserek. McGorty did his best to blunt Cheserek’s feared kick, saying after the race, “I gave it my all”, but he was no match for the now 2-time Foot Locker Champion(joining Abdirizak Mohamud[1996-1997], Dathan Ritzenhein[19992000], and Lukas Verzbicas[2009-2010] as a 2-time winner). Leingang moved up a position from last year, finishing 3rd, while Wharton slipped to 6th place. GIRLS: Despite getting tripped up and falling in the first 1/4-mile, sophomore Anna Rohrer pulled away late in the race to win the girls’ title. Marissa Williams, just as she did at the previous week’s West Regional, opened up a big early lead, but soon found herself surrounded by 5 girls from the Midwest, including Rohrer, who was sidelined last year with four broken bones in her foot. Williams would fade to 8th, while Catarina Rocha’s late sprint carried her past Marla Hauger and Jordyn Colker to nab 2nd place. Too bad we’ll never know if she could have beaten Sarah Baxter or Mary Cain, the 1-2 finishers at the Nike Cross Nationals. Family Affair Both runners-up continued a family tradition at Foot Locker Sean McGorty’s mother (Vicki Verinder) was 22nd in the girls race in 1983. And his dad Kevin (Westfield,NJ) set the current Eastern H.S. Decathlon record(7198) in 1983. Catarina’ Rocha’s father Jose (now Joe), who is her coach, finished 15th at the 1982 Final, and her mother, Gina Braz, was 21st in the girls Final in 1984. And her uncle, Fernando Braz(Gina’s brother), was 15th at the inaugural event in 1979!
