The nu-goth trend of autumn ’08 has grown up this year. Givenchy, Moschino and Lanvin put a super-feminine spin on proceedings, replacing leggings and biker jackets with nippedin waists and dinner jackets. Suede, leather and satin all play their part in keeping this look luxe but clever tailoring and flattering necklines are key. Faced with finding workwear that’s both professional and fashionable, many of us choose to play it safe with the same old look year after year. With the help of stylist Debby Barry, La Redoute challenged three hardworking women to step out of their comfort zones in brand new office-ready looks. Here are the results...
fierce to feminine
Charlotte Eldridge, 31, Surrey Quays When it came to dressing for her job, social work recruiter Charlotte never cut corners. “My company operates a smart-casual policy, but I always dress on the smarter side.” But corporate two pieces can run the risk of looking severe, stylist Debby warns: “Women shouldn’t be afraid to have fun with their look in the workplace.” She illustrated her point by dressing Charlotte in a sharply tailored pencil skirt and offsetting this with a super-feminine ruffle blouse in a muted tone. “Grey is a great foil for black and can take any accent colour,” Debby explains. Charlotte was a fan. “Everyone commented on how tiny my waist looked! I loved the boutique feel of the outfit – it was really glamorous.”

Gemma Rainer, 28, Hertfordshire Gemma’s job as a PA demands a practical but immaculate look: “I’m constantly running around,” she explains. “I’m the first port of call for clients so it’s imperative that I look presentable.” Stylist Debby was keen to update Gemma’s look with an androgynous twist, teaming highwaisted trousers with a crisp blue and white pinstripe shirt. “I wanted to show Gemma she can put her own spin on a trend.” It was a revelation. “I didn’t think trousers could be so dressed-up,” says Gemma, “and I still feel comfortable enough to run all my errands.”

Monica Riley, 37, SURREY Senior account director Monica was a self-confessed sober dresser stuck in a uniform of trouser suits that felt too stuffy for after-hours. “My diary is packed with meet-and-greets and I never have time to change after work before I’m off out again,” she confesses. y work life is hectic. I could be interviewing Piers Morgan, styling Dizzee Rascal, talking on the evening news and partying with Kate Moss, so I need my wardrobe to work hard. I’m the mistress of converting an outfit from day to play by switching accessories and glamming up my hair. Tearing around in heels would reduce me to tears, so I wear statement flats: studded ankle boots or over-the-knee numbers to add a rock edge. When you have fun with fashion you can let go of the pressure to be on-trend. A Little Fuchsia Dress – LFD – is my fashion failsafe. I have six, ranging from Vivienne Westwood to French Connection. My tip this season is the blazer. It instantly changes the mood of your look and smartens you up. A statement bag will also sharpen up a casual look.
