Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) The City of Laramie mosquito control program is an Integrated Mosquito Management Program (IMM), as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It considers many various forms of control and uses the most environmentally friendly methods of control available that will achieve the desired control outcomes. IMM programs use pesticides, but only after a systematic monitoring of pest populations indicates that there is a need. All mosquito control products used within the United States fall under EPA guidelines and are evaluated for safety by EPA before being registered for use. The City of Laramie has chosen its pesticides based on several factors including: environmental impacts, cost, effective use in our cool climate, and citizen sensitivities. For more information contact Tyler Shevling, Mosquito Control Crew Supervisor: Phone: (307) 721-5258; Hotline (307) 721-5056 Email: tshevling@cityoflaramie.org Internet: www.cityoflaramie.org/mosquito IMM Components There are many components to the city of Laramie’s Integrated Mosquito Management approach. These include but are not limited to larval surveillance, biological larval control, reduction of larval habitat, adult mosquito surveillance, West Nile Virus testing and monitoring, adult mosquito control thought the use of ULV (ultralow volume) foggers and EPA approved chemicals, and mosquito bite prevention education. Adopt-A-Park The City of Laramie & the Parks, Tree & Recreation Advisory Board have an Adopt-A-Park program that provides an agreement with individuals, companies, service groups or organizations to assist with the maintenance and development of our park system. Similar to the Adopt-A-Trail program, sponsorships are for two years and the sponsor has a choice to purchase a sign indicating their involvement with our program. This program is administered by the Parks & Recreation Department and encourages citizens to get involved in the care and development of our parks. For more information please call (307) 721-5267. Adopt-A-Trail With the adoption of the Bicycle Trail Master Plan in 1999, the City of Laramie has developed the Laramie River Greenbelt, the Cirrus Sky Trail and the Jacoby Ridge Rural Trail. Trails are important for the health of our community, as well as an integral part of our economic vitality. From walking, running, biking, skateboard and roller blading, people young and old utilize our varied and vibrant trail system. The City of Laramie and 22

the Parks, Tree & Recreation Advisory Board have opened 1/4 mile sections of our trail system for adoption by individuals, companies, service groups or organizations. Adopt-A-Trail program sponsorships are for two years, and the sponsor receives a sign indicating their involvement with our program. This program is administered by the Parks & Recreation Department and encourages citizens to get involved in the care of our trails. For more information please call (307) 721-5267. Bench and Tree Memorials Memorialize the memory of your loved one with a tree or bench placed in a park or along a trail. A plaque may be placed by memorials or donations if desired by the donor. The Parks & Recreation Department accepts donations of trees, shrubs and park benches for beautification and enhancement of our parks and trails. Prior to planting or installation, staff and the Parks, Tree & Recreation Advisory Board must approve the donation and the location. The donor may plant the tree or shrub they have donated with the assistance of staff members. All trees, benches and memorial plaques purchased by the City are invoiced at wholesale cost to the donor. Washington Park Horseshoe Pits The horseshoe pits have been installed. Posts and backboards have been added to each new pit. Currently there are crusher fines that line each of the pits, this spring/summer, the areas around the posts will be excavated and a clay added to mirror the other pits in the location. A new entry sidewalk has been installed on the north side. The fencing is in need of repairs/replacement and will be scheduled for an upgrade when the City releases money for projects again. LaPrele Playground The new playground equipment has been installed with an artificial turf that can handle critical fall heights. A new entry ramp was added this spring and a new sidewalk running from Springcreek Rd to the playground should help individuals get to the playground more efficiently. Some damaged curb and gutter were also replaced along the ADA parking zone to help with better parking. Imperial Heights The 5 to 12 year old playground was installed last summer and is open for use. This spring, 2 new basketball goals will be installed with a new concrete pad to the south east. This pad will not be laid out as a traditional basketball court, but have 2 goals that individuals can practice shooting or play 3 on 3 games.

Community Forestry Spring Snow Storms Threaten Trees April, May, and early June snow storms can cause signifi cant damage to trees. Spring snow storms are wetter and heavier, often coming in large amounts. Tree buds are swelling prior to bud-break and some are breaking-bud with leaves or flowers emerging, which increases the surface area on tree limbs for snow to stick. Late spring storms with accumulating snow causes more tree damage due to leaves on the limbs. Limbs that break out of trees from heavy snow or wind usually have decay in the center of the limb. Weak-wooded trees like cottonwood, poplar, boxelder maple and Siberian elm are more prone to snow damage than most other trees. Juniper trees are susceptible to damage from heavy snow as well. Often when a live limb breaks off a tree in spring the limb tears bark down the trunk or the limb that it was attached to. The torn bark causes further damage to the tree sometimes to the point of requiring tree removal. Smaller trees can have accumulating snow carefully brushed off the branches to ease the weight. Larger trees should be pruned while dormant or after spring leaf-out by a professional arborist and inspected to correct potential weak branch problems. If you have questions concerning trees on your property, in the right-of-way adjacent to your property, or you would like additional information on the Shawver Tree Fund program contact, Randy Overstreet, City Arborist, at roverstreet@cityoflaramie.org.

Greenhill Cemetery The Greenhill Cemetery is located at 455 N. 15th Street and is Laramie’s only municipality owned cemetery. Family, visitors and friends are always welcome at Greenhill Cemetery. The cemetery is open for visitation daily from 5AM to 9PM, or sunrise to sunset. The Sexton’s office is open Monday through Friday from 8AM to Noon and available by phone at (307) 721-5267. Cemetery upkeep involves a lot of work in the summer. Staff will be continually mowing, string trimming, irrigating, pruning, and performing general maintenance of grave spaces. If you come across a grave space that needs maintenance, please report the issue to the sexton. Items that do not meet the rules and regulation requirements will be removed from grave spaces two weeks after Memorial Day. This includes all glass items. If you are unfamiliar with the rules and regulations, you can visit the City of Laramie website, under Parks and Recreation, or call the office to get a copy of the regulations. For more information, please contact Loni Wilson, Cemetery Crew Leader at (307) 721-5268 or lwilson@cityoflaramie.org.
