The blocks can be easily made out of balsa wood, which is available in craft stores. Different thicknesses are available, and balsa wood requires little sanding. As an alternative, slices of stock lumber could be used for the blocks.

Carpenters, contractors, or home-building centers are good sources of wood scraps for this game. These scraps might require more sanding, but the resulting pieces would be harder to stack into even towers and more random pieces tend to make the game more interesting.
