Trump’s Campaign Chairman and His Lawyer Convicted on Same Day

O
n Tuesday of this week, two of Donald Trump’s former advisors were convicted of felonies that could send them each to prison for years. A jury in Virginia returned eight guilty verdicts on Tuesday morning against Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, after having deliberated for four days. The jury found Manafort guilty of five counts of tax fraud, two counts of bank fraud, and one count of failing to disclose a foreign bank account. The charges carry a maximum sentence of up to 80 years in prison. The jury deadlocked 11 to 1 to convict Manafort on 10 other counts, so those were dismissed in mistrials. Just one hour later, Trump’s former lawyer and self-proclaimed “fixer”, Michael Cohen, walked into federal court in New York City and entered a plea deal that convicted him of eight felonies, including two counts of making illegal contributions “for the principle purpose of influencing the election." Cohen could face up to 63 months in prison. Cohen was released on bail and is scheduled to be sentenced in December. Both of the convictions come as Special Counsel Robert Mueller continues his investigation into the possible interference of Russia into TRUMP ON PAGE 3

Ernie Becerra, owner the San Diego Taco Company, Salud, and Pisto, took his first steps toward opening his own restaurant after being thrown out of corporate America. “I was a bank manager at an U.S. Bank for about five years,” Becerra said to La Prensa San Diego. “To me, management was just a job; I didn’t have the chance to go to college because I got married when I was still pretty young, so I had to work two jobs and banking was a fast way to make money without having to go to school.” While bank management was simply a way of making decent money, and a way of following in his father’s footsteps, it was not where Becerra’s passions lay. Upon being let go from his job at U.S. Bank, he knew exactly what business move he would make next. “I decided to follow my dream to have my own restaurant,” he said. PROFILE ON PAGE 13

Lawsuit Against Census Citizenship Question Advances BY MARIELENA CASTELLANOS
I
n a loss for the Trump administration, a federal judge ruled two related California lawsuits to remove a question about citizenship in the upcoming U.S. census can continue. U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California rejected the Trump administration’s requests to dismiss the lawsuits. Opponents of the citizenship question fear it will discourage undocumented immigrants from filling out the questionnaire and create an inaccurate count. The decision to ask if residents are U.S. citizens was made in March of this year by the U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, who contends the question is needed to help enforce the Voting Rights Act. In March of this year, NBC News reported White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended the move, and said the question is "necessary for the Department of Justice to protect voters."
But in the order denying the motion to dismiss the lawsuits the judge wrote, “indeed the operative complaints are replete with examples of government policies and actions and rhetoric within the last year that would tend to make non-citizens and their family members potentially afraid to divulge their household’s citizenship status to a federal agency.” The judge also wrote “plaintiffs make a sufficient showing that the Secretary’s decision to add a citizenship [question] will undermine the ‘strong constitutional interest in accuracy’ of the census.” The lawsuits were filed against Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, the U.S. Commerce Department, the U.S. Acting Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, Ron Jarmin, and the U.S. Census Bureau. Back in July a federal court also allowed a similar multistate lawsuit filed by the State of New York to move forward. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who filed one of the lawsuits back in March, applauded the judge’s decision. “Tonight’s ruling grants us discovery to understand the decision-making behind the
Administration’s effort to disrupt an accurate Census count and most importantly, for our case to fully move forward,” said Attorney General Becerra. Our communities in California depend on the Census to determine critical services for our schools, disaster relief, public health and safety and we’re encouraged by today’s decision.” An inaccurate count would have a negative impact on the state and could lead to losing seats in the House of Representatives. The state would also suffer the loss of federal funding allocated on the basis of census-derived statistics. The census is required by the constitution every 10 years. All residents are to be counted regardless of citizenship status. The last time a citizenship question was asked was in 1950. Reuters reported there is support for the citizenship question among conservative scholars at the Heritage Foundation and American Enterprise Institute, Republican U.S. Representatives Steve King and Clay Higgins, and Republican Senator John Kennedy.

Local Congressman Indicted for Misappropriation of Funds BY ALEXANDRA MENDOZA
Republican Representative Duncan Hunter, Jr. and his wife, Margaret, were indicted by a grand jury for purportedly converting more than $250,000 in campaign funds to pay for personal expenses, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California. The indictment accuses the couple of using campaign funds from 2009 to 2016 to cover a plethora of personal expenses, from family vacations to Italy, Hawaii, and other places, to private school tuition, dental work, and tickets to the theater.
To conceal these illegal charges, the Hunters filed the expenditures before the Federal Election Commission (FEC) as “campaign trips”, “meals with volunteers and supporters”, “support events with teachers and parents”, “gift cards”, and “gift baskets,” among other things. Similarly, the dental work paid with campaign funds was declared as charitable contributions to “Smiles for Life”, while the theater tickets were justified as “Christmas Gift Certificates”, states the indictment. SB1 Speeds up State Winning the Election was the Beginning of Trump’s Nightmare Route 78 Repairs BY ARTURO CASTAÑARES / PUBLISHER AND CEO

Caltrans will improve 71 lane miles on State Route 78 from Flora Vista Street in Escondido to West Haverford Road in Ramona and from just east of Magnolia Avenue in Ramona to Wynola Road in Julian through funds from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. “State Route 78 in San Diego County is an important east-west corridor and commuter route that is especially crucial to our outlying rural communities,” said Caltrans Director Laurie Berman. “SB 1 funding for this project allows crews to make the long-lasting repairs needed to sustain a reliable and safe transportation system for the users who depend on this route.” More than 1,300 trucks daily use this segment of SR-78 and 28 percent of those trucks have five or more axles that contribute to road deterioration. “Without this SB 1 funded project, the pavement would continue to deteriorate, which would directly impact travelers and result in costly maintenance repairs in the future,” said Caltrans District Director Cory Binns. “Moving people and goods through this corridor is critical, as the five major cities intersecting State Route 78 are growing with more people living and working in the area than ever before.” This $12.5 million project, has been awarded to Calmex Engineering Inc. who will remove and replace old pavement to restore the roadway and will add safety improvements, including high visibility road markings. Work started the week of July 9 at westbound SR-78 and Haverford Road in Escondido, and will take place daily Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. until the project is completed in the fall. The work will require reducing SR-78 to one lane in one-mile segments and may temporarily block some driveways. This weekend, crews will close one lane of State Route 78 at Magnolia Avenue in Ramona to Old Julian Highway to crack sealing and chip sealing activities. The daytime closures will continue Monday, August 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday Aug.28 through Thursday Aug. 30, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Daytime work will continue as needed after the Labor Day holiday. During the closures, crews will work in two-to-three mile segments along the eight-mile construction zone. Construction personnel with

n November 4, 2016, no one was more surprised that Donald Trump had won an upset campaign victory than one man in New York City; Donald J. Trump. Throughout his Quixotic campaign for President, Trump had defied conventional political wisdom and used combative, divisive, and even insulting language in his quest to defeat a dozen experienced Republican candidates in his quest to be President. His campaign had started, many suspected, four years earlier when President Barack Obama made fun of Trump at the White House Correspondence dinner. Obama made a joke that Trump could be President because he was experienced in making tough decisions, like having to choose between hiring actor Gary Buesy or singer Meat Loaf during an episode of Celebrity Apprentice. Trump later launched a public campaign to find proof that Obama had not been born in Hawaii, and, therefore, as Trump claimed, Obama was not eligible to be president. The “birther” movement, as it became known, was a popular conspiracy theory among Republicans, and gave Trump some standing among right-wing voters. When the State of Hawaii released an official copy of Obama birth certificate, Trump promised to deliver
proof that it was a fake. For another year, Trump milked the conspiracy theory that eventually went nowhere. From that, a campaign for President was born. Trump launched his campaign by claiming Mexico only sends rapist, murderers, and drug dealers (and some normal people) to the US. He promised to build a border wall and have Mexico pay for it. And he promised to bring coal back to save jobs in an industry that even China is running away from. He seemed to bask in the spotlight of being considered a serious contender for President. He promised to fund his campaign personally. He promised to “drain the swamp”, alleging that Washington, D.C. was full of unsavory creatures that protected their own power at the expense of hard working taxpayers. Trump ran the board in the primary elections and secured the Republican nomination against wellestablished politicians like Bush, Christie, Huckabee, Cruz, Rubio, and Kasich. The unthinkable had happened; a first-time candidate reality star business mogul with a checkered past had become the standard bearer of Ronald Reagan’s party, and was set to take on Hillary Clinton in the general election. Political polls and experts all predicted that Clinton would run away with the election. Even Clinton
fortune of billions to several bankruptcies and comebacks. His business has often raised claims of questionable financing and underhanded tactics. His Trump University real estate program had been sued for millions of dollars in a fraud case. And Trump had often surrounded himself with colorful characters with even more colorful pasts. Upon his election, Trump decided not to divest himself from his complex web of hundreds of companies, and, instead, left his two sons to run the empire. Many critics charged that his continued business ownership would create conflicts of interest with being President. Never had anyone with such diverse and complex businesses been elected. Then the fangs came out. Lawsuits were filed claiming Trump had violated the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution (which prohibits gifts from foreign governments) every time officials from other countries stay at a Trump hotel or golf course. Last year, a Special Counsel was appointed to investigate possible interference by Russians in the 2016 election. The investigation has been looking into multiple people connected to Trump in connection with foreigners, including Trump’s son, son-in-law, and close advisers. As we all know, several
people close to Trump have already been convicted of various crimes, including this week’s convictions of Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort. Flynn. Gates. Papadopoulos. And those convictions may only be the start of an increasingly tightening noose around Trump. Federal and state investigators are continuing to investigate and seem to be gaining access to Trump’s business dealings and internal business operations. With each passing day, the once tightly controlled private business empire of Donald Trump is becoming more and more public. A losing campaign for Trump could have set him up to make millions or billions as a media mogul. Maybe he thought a close losing campaign would make his business empire even more valuable or reap greater financial gains through new relationships. But, in the end, becoming President could prove to be the worst thing to have happened to Trump, and may expose his family and close associates to legal jeopardy. His past personal relationships, payoffs, and deals are all under the microscope now. Millions of young Americans dream of becoming President someday. For Donald Trump, that dream may become a nightmare, and an expensive one at that. Be careful what you wish for. It just may come true.

herself seemed overly confident; so much so, that she failed to visit key states like Michigan and Wisconsin in the final weeks of the election. Trump had become an aggressive campaigner, leading raucous rallies where chanting crowds yelled out “Lock her up!”, referring to Clinton for her alleged misuse of classified information. He seemed poised to be the most popular and populous election loser in history. Many thought he would use his new found popularity to launch his own media network to continue fighting the establishment he so often decried. But late on election night, as results from key states came in, the anointment of Clinton began to look like it was in trouble. Key counties in important states for were coming in for Trump, contrary to the polling that had predicted big leads for Clinton. Police and volunteers conducted multiple searches throughout the community but had not found any clues as to her whereabouts. This week, police reviewed a local resident’s security system video footage that had captured video of Tibbets running by while a car followed her. Police tracked the car which led them to Cristhian Rivera, 24, who has worked at a local dairy farm for over 4 years. Rivera was arrested and questioned about Tibbetts. He admitted he saw Tibbetts jogging and followed her in his car, then confronted her on foot. Rivera told police Tibbetts threatened to call police on her cell phone and tried to run away from him before he abducted her. He later led police to a corn field where Tibbetts body was discovered under cornstalks. The murder has drawn the attention of President Donald Trump because Rivera had reportedly used a driver’s license and Social Security card of another person for pass the employment review process. Court documents allege Rivera is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico that has been in the United States since he was 17 years old. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has now issued a detainer warrant for Rivera, the first step in the deportation process. Coffee With a Cop Invites Candid Community Conversations It’s not often that you’re presented with the opportunity to have coffee with officers from the Port of San Diego Harbor Police and candidly discuss pressing issues in the community as well as the role of the department. La Prensa San Diego and several Barrio Logan community members did just that early Wednesday morning during the department’s second Coffee with a Cop event held at Ryan Bros. Coffee.
Walking into the red brick building, we were greeted by a smiling Sergeant Victor Banuelos who is responsible for organizing Coffee with a Cop and other community outreach events as the department’s community policing sergeant. He offered us a cup of hot coffee and pastries before we began to talk about the department’s efforts to interact with the community, technology used to help solve crimes, and their latest efforts to help vaccinate individuals around the port against hepatitis A. The Hunters would have a hard time justifying paying their children’s private tuition to Christian Unified School in el Cajon, which according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, they filed as “charitable contributions.” Both Hunter and his wife also spent “tens of thousands of dollars” in other low-profile purchases, such as fast food, movie tickets, golf outings, video games, coffee, household items, and expensive meals. “The indictment alleges that Congressman Hunter and his wife repeatedly dipped into campaign coffers as if they were personal bank accounts, and falsified FEC campaign finance reports to cover their tracks,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “Elected representatives should jealously guard the public’s trust, not abuse their positions for personal gain. Today’s indictment is a reminder that no one is above the law.” The 60-count indictment accuses the couple of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, wire fraud, falsification of records, and prohibited use of campaign contributions. Hunter, 41, who was preceded in Office by his father of the same name, currently represents California’s 50th Congressional District and is running for reelection to the office he has held for nearly a decade after winning the June Primaries. He is being challenged by Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar. The division, chaos and corruption in Washington has gone too far, said CampaNajjar in a statement. “Today's indictment confirms just how deep this corruption can reach when someone like Duncan Hunter Jr. is in it for himself instead of representing the people.”

SB 1 funds will enable Caltrans to fix more than 17,000 lane miles of pavement, 500 bridges and 55,000 culverts by 2027.
Harbor Police serves the Port of San Diego, the San Diego International Airport, and the surrounding areas of the San Diego Bay. Officers can typically be found policing the areas around Seaport Village but they can also be found in the water as they police the bay. Comunidad de Barrio Un nuevo mural llegará al histórico Parque Chicano solo que esta vez, será elaborado por los propios vecinos de Barrio Logan. Esta obra llevará por nombre “Háawka”, que significa “hola” en lengua kumiai, y en mayor medida, busca dar voz a la comunidad para que cuente su historia, pero también es un recordatorio del porqué es crucial cuidar el medio ambiente. El diseño es de la artista hondureña Alicia M. Siu, y fue aprobado tanto por el Comité del Parque Chicano como por la Coalición de Salud Ambiental (EHC). El concepto fue adoptado luego de una serie de talleres comunitarios en la que surgieron ideas para la obra. A grandes rasgos, este mural muestra a miembros de la comunidad de Barrio Logan y su lucha por mantener su entorno ante la amenaza latente de la contaminación aledaña a la zona, a la par de un retrato de generaciones de pobladores

Para plasmarlo, el diseño fue proyectado sobre una pared en blanco y fueron los vecinos quienes dieron los primeros trazos a este mural que una vez terminado será colocado en el jardín del Parque Chicano. “Fue así como se planeó para que la gente pudiera ayudar a dibujarlo, así sepan dibujar o no, eso es lo divertido de esto, ver cómo sucede”, explicó Siu. “Una vez que esté terminado ansío ver el impacto que tendrá”, añadió la artista quien busca que con la obra la comunidad se involucre. La temática del mural fue celebrada por activistas de la Coalición de Salud Ambiental,
quienes han luchado por la causa por más de 20 años. Y es que la comunidad de Barrio Logan se ha visto afectada por la contaminación durante décadas, al estar rodeados de la industria de astilleria y marítima, la Autopista Interestatal 5 y una base naval. La problemática es tal, que los índices de asma están por encima a otras zonas de la ciudad de San Diego. “El mural trata de contar la historia del hoy y encontrar soluciones”, mencionó Jorge Domínguez, activista con EHC, quien resaltó que esta obra refleja las diferentes perspectivas de las comunidades tanto de ayer como hoy. “Hay una falta de seguimiento entre las generaciones, entre los viejos y los jóvenes, como que no hay un diálogo, entonces este mural ha creado un diálogo, un espacio saludable para ello”, subrayó. “Queremos saber qué es lo que las nuevas generaciones piensan del tema, qué soluciones tienen ellos también, queremos crear una plataforma y un mural es una forma de hacerlo”.

Friendship Park Celebrates 47 Years BY MARIELENA CASTELLANOS
A kite was flown into the sky, a cake was cut, a picnic took place, and a binational communion was held along the westernmost end of the U.S.-Mexico border to mark the 47th anniversary of a space with diverse meanings, friendship between the two countries among them. The celebration followed a tradition started years ago when the park first opened in 1971, with then first lady Pat Nixon inaugurating the park and proclaiming, "May there never be a wall between these two great nations, only friendship." Large steel fences have gone up since the inauguration of the park, and this year new rules dictating how guests can visit were put into place. At the beginning of the year, the U.S. Border Patrol said it would no longer open a door at the border fence. In February, the Border Patrol announced no more than 10 people could be in what the Border Patrol calls the “Friendship Circle”, an area in between two fences, and also limited the time spent there to about 30 minutes. The park is still open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Roberto Vivar, a member
of the group Friends of Friendship Park and who helped organize the celebration, pointed out that instead of diminishing efforts to create barriers as the first lady suggested, they have increased. “To the degree now that they want to build barriers over barriers and not only barriers and physical walls, mental barriers, barriers of the heart, and for us it is very important to commemorate this anniversary and tell President Trump that in the heart of the community of San Diego and Tijuana there will never be walls, there will never be barriers; friendship will always grow,” Vivar said. A spokesman for the Border Patrol said, “It’s an isolated area located in a Border Patrol enforcement zone along the international boundary with Mexico, and also one of the areas exploited by human smugglers. Each sector Chief Patrol Agent reviews and evaluates its various policies. To safely secure the area while maintaining an enforcement posture the number of guests will be limited to 10 people at a time. Guests are allowed in Friendship Circle for about 30 minutes.” “The Border Patrol agents working there make their best attempt to monitor the
amount of time everyone spends inside the area to ensure everyone who would like time in Friendship Circle is given that opportunity. Occasionally more people are allowed when groups have asked for permission prior to their event and upon approval by the San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent,” the spokesman added. Vivar said he hopes people will call the Border Patrol and urge the agency to change the rules and allow 25 people instead of 10 again. The park has also served as a site for many firsts, a father and daughter hugged for the first time there, friends and family have reunited, vigils, ceremonies, live concerts, and protests have all been held in the area on both sides of border. Some of those protests have been motivated by President Trump’s calls to secure the border by constructing a wall to stop people from coming into the country. the 2016 election. The cases stem from the Special Counsel’s work, even though neither one is directly connected to foreign meddling, but Mueller discovered the illegal actions of both men in the course of his investigation. Manafort’s case centered around tens of millions of dollars he received for political work in Ukraine and connected to Russian oligarchs. The charges included failing to report millions of dollars in income by hiding the cash in offshore accounts and paying for expensive cars, clothes, and properties through wire transfers directly from foreign banks. None of the charges related directly to Trump. Cohen, on the other hand, pled guilty to eight counts, but two of the charges related directly to Trump. One conviction was for making an illegal corporate contribution to Trump’s campaign, and another conviction was for making a contribution to Trump’s campaign in excess of the legal limit. The corporate contribution was related to a $150,000 payment made to former Playboy model Karen McDougal by the National Inquirer, which Cohen says was reimbursed by Trump. McDougal has claimed she had an affair with Trump right after his wife, Melania, gave birth to their son in 2006. Cohen’s admission to making a contribution beyond the legal limit relates to a $130,000 payment he made to porn star Stormy Daniels who also claims to have had an affair with Trump during the same time as McDougal. Cohen made the payment through a shell company he created and was later reimbursed by Trump’s company for the payment. Cohen maintains that he made both deals “in coordination and at the direction of ” Trump “for the principal purpose of influencing the election.” Trump reacted to the convictions in different ways, saying he felt “bad” for Manafort, calling him a “brave man”, but criticizing Cohen as a “liar”. “I feel very badly for Paul Manfort and his family,” Trump wrote in a Twitter message. “Such respect for a brave man!”, Trump added. On the contrary, Trump’s only message relating to Michael Cohen was a sarcastic retort. “If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don’t retain the services of Michael Cohen,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning. Cohen had worked for years for Trump and his
companies, often being used to negotiate deals for then then-businessman and reality star. When stories first broke about a possible payment to Stormy Daniels, Cohen denied any such payment, but later said he paid her from his own money out of loyalty to Trump. Daniels’ lawyer, Michael Avenatti later detailed how Cohen had used a shell company to make the payment, and further detail later emerged about Trump’s reimbursement to Cohen. Two weeks ago, Cohen released an audio recording of a meeting with Trump during the election where they discussed the payment to McDougal in conjunction with David Pecker, CEO of the National Inquirer. Trump still maintains he did not know about the payments until “later”. Late this week, Cohen’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, said Cohen decided to plead guilty to his involvement in covering for Trump after he realized that Trump is “both corrupt and a dangerous person in the oval office.” Davis said Cohen would not accept a pardon from Trump. Some political analysts believe Trump may pardon either Manafort or Cohen or both to relieve any pressure they may have to testify against Trump in order to secure lighter sentences for themselves, but legal experts caution that pardoning them would remove their ability to plead the fifth in any later legal actions against Trump or any of his other associates or relatives, requiring them to testify fully or face prison for contempt of court. On Wednesday, Mr. Davis also said he believes Cohen is prepared to testify before Congress without immunity after Congressman Elijah Cummings asked for a hearing with Cohen before the House Oversight Committee. “These are extremely serious crimes that implicate the fundamental underpinnings of our democracy, and they warrant robust and credible oversight by Congress as an independent Constitutional check on the Executive Branch,” Cummings wrote. This week, both Senators Richard Burr (R) and Mark Warner (D) of the Senate Intelligence Committee issued a joint statement saying they had “reengaged” with Cohen, who has already testified before the committee as it investigated Russian involvement in the 2016 election.

Los mexicas, cuenta la leyenda, se movilizaron para fundar la capital de su imperio en el lugar en donde una águila devoraba una serpiente: el Lago de Texcoco. La realidad es que no fue una buena elección si el episodio fuera cierto. La Ciudad de México es un error urbano del que se pagan en la actualidad enormes consecuencias, la más sobresaliente es el agua que es absorbida y desplazada por una imparable mancha demográfica. n una pérdida para la administración Trump, un juez federal dictaminó que dos demandas de California para eliminar una pregunta sobre la ciudadanía en el próximo censo de los EE.UU. pueden continuar. El juez Richard Seeborg del Tribunal de Distrito de los Estados Unidos para el Distrito Norte de California rechazó las solicitudes de la administración Trump para desestimar las demandas. Quienes se oponen a la pregunta relacionada a la ciudadanía temen que desaliente a los inmigrantes indocumentados de completar el cuestionario y crear un conteo inexacto en el próximo censo. La decisión de preguntar si los residentes son ciudadanos estadounidenses fue tomada en marzo de este año por el secretario de Comercio Wilbur Ross, quien sostiene que la pregunta es necesaria para hacer cumplir la Ley de Derechos Electorales. En marzo de este año, NBC News informó que Sarah Huckabee Sanders, secretaria de prensa de la Casa Blanca, defendió la medida y dijo que la pregunta es "necesaria para que el Departamento de Justicia proteja a los votantes". Para lograr tus metas a veces es necesario que te despidan de tu trabajo como gerente. Ernie Becerra, dueño de San Diego Taco Company, una compañía de taquizas; Salud, un restaurante de tacos y Pisto, un servicio de banquetes enfocado en licores, tomó sus primeros pasos para abrir un restaurante tras ser echado fuera del mundo corporativo. “Yo fui un gerente de U.S. Bank por cinco años”, Becerra dijo a La Prensa San Diego. “Para mí, la gerencia sólo era un trabajo; yo no tuve la oportunidad de ir a la universidad porque me casé muy joven, así que me vi obligado a tener dos trabajos y el mundo bancario me ofreció una manera de tener buenos ingresos sin haber asistido a la universidad”. Aunque el mundo bancario le ofrecía buenos ingresos, y una oportunidad de seguir los pasos de su padre, no era una profesión que apasionaba a Becerra. Al ser despedido de su puesto, él supo cuál sería su próxima acción. “Me despidieron de la industria bancaria así que decidí seguir mi sueño de abrir un restaurante”, dijo Becerra. Becerra entonces inició su camino hacia ser propietario de un restaurante al tomar un cuaderno con recetas que compilaba y los mil 500 dólares que tenía a su nombre y compró un carrito taquero para poder ofrecer el servicio de taquizas. “Tenía una meta pero no sabía por dónde comenzar, así que comencé convirtiéndome en taquero”, recordó Becerra. “Todos pensaron que estaba loco por querer ser taquero tras ser gerente, pero era la única forma de iniciar”. Becerra comenzó a cocinar en casa y a hacer taquizas en patios y eventos de los que se enteraba. “Mis primeros jales fueron en fiestas de cumpleaños, bodas y lo que pudiera conseguir”, Becerra relató acerca de sus inicios como dueño de su empresa. SB1 Acelerará el Reparamiento de la Ruta Estatal 78 POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO
Las autoridades de Caltrans mejorarán 71 millas en carriles de la Ruta Estatal 78 (SR-78) como parte de la Ley de Reparaciones y Responsabilidades de Calles del 2017, con fondos del Proyecto de Ley del Senado Estatal (SB 1, por sus siglas en inglés). Las reparaciones se realizarán desde la Calle Flora en Escondido hasta West Harverford Road en Ramona que está justo al Este del cruce de la Avenida
Magnolia en Ramona y la Calle Wynola en Julian. “La Ruta Estatal 78 en el Condado de San Diego es una carretera importante entre el Este y el Oeste que es especialmente esencial para nuestras comunidades rurales”, dijo Laurie Berman, directora del Departamento de Transporte de California (Caltrans, por sus siglas en inglés). “Los fondos de la SB 1 para este proyecto, permiten que el personal realice obras de reparación que duren a largo plazo para
un sistema de transporte que sea seguro y fiable para los usuarios que dependen de esta ruta”. Más de mil 300 camiones utilizan este segmento de la SR-78 cada día y el 28 por ciento de esos camiones, tienen más de cinco ejes que contribuyen al deterioro de la carretera. “Sin los fondos de la SB 1 para este proyecto, el pavimento seguiría en deterioro, lo que llevaría a un impacto en los viajeros con un alto mantenimiento
de reparaciones para ellos”, dijo el director de distrito de Caltrans, Cory Binns. “El mover a la gente y a la mercancía por esta carretera es algo crítico ya que las cinco ciudades que tienen una intersección en la SR-78 están creciendo más que nunca antes, con gente trabajadora que reside ahí”. que sirve para ofrecer recursos a proyectos de infraestructura, desde 179 millones de dólares en el año fiscal 2014 hasta 559 millones de dólares en el año fiscal actual. Esas inversiones han llevado a mejoras en parques, estaciones de bomberos, bibliotecas, centros de recreación, estaciones de salvavidas así como en mejoramiento de calles, proyectos de transporte, y mejoras en el agua pluvial a lo largo de San Diego. La nueva estación ubicada en 3920 de la Avenida 9, cuenta con 10 mil 731 pies cuadrados, dos pisos, 9 cuartos, una cocina, un cuarto de día, un cuarto para revisiones, un cuarto de
ejercicio, y un área de descanso. El lugar cuenta con un camión de bomberos, un vehículo del ejército, y un vehículo de utilidad. Los dormitorios serán para el uso de un jefe al mando, dos capitanes y seis bomberos. “La Estación de Bomberos No. 5 proporcionará a Hillcrest y al área del Norte de San Diego los recursos y personal que necesitan para la seguridad pública”, dijo Ward. “Con la adición de este moderno edificio, los residentes tendrán acceso a servicios comunitarios de excelencia que asegurará la calidad de vida en la comunidad, mientras ésta continua creciendo”. En el lugar también se

incorporan las mejores practicas del Programa de Prevención y Concientización del Cáncer que tiene el Ayuntamiento de San Diego, que es el contar un casillero para mantener el equipo lejos de los dormitorios, así como dos máquinas para lavado de equipo para evitar la exposición a agenes cancerígenos. “Cuando fui parte del Cabildo de San Diego, el terminar esta estación de bomberos fue una de las promesas que le hice a la comunidad de Hillcrest y el Norte de San Diego. Luego de mucho tiempo de trabajo conjunto, esto es una realidad”, dijo Gloria. “Es mi esperanza que los residentes
de estas comunidades vean estas instalaciones como una manera más de proteger a la comunidad, al saber que en cualquier momento que sea necesario, se tendrá la ayuda de esta estación. Además, espero que otras comunidades vean esta estación como una aspiración para asegurar que se tengan estaciones funcionales en cada comunidad”. Desde que Faulconer tomó el puesto de alcalde, el ayuntamiento ha inaugurado estaciones de bomberos en cinco comunidades incluyendo en City Heights, Little Italy, Mission Valley, Point Loma y Hillcrest, además ha renovado cuatro otras estaciones en las áreas de La Jolla, Mira Mesa, North Park y Southcrest.

Ruel Villaruel, un padre de un hijo de siete años de edad, empezó a trabajar en el programa de Amazon Flex en diciembre del 2016, luego de que un amigo le recomendó el empleo para que Ruel pudiera comprar regalos de Navidad para su familia. Lanzado en 2015, Amazon Flex es un programa innovador, el cual ofrece la oportunidad a individuos o socios de entrega de que sean sus propios jefes al ser un contratista independiente que entrega paquetes de Amazon. Este programa se encuentra disponible en más de 50 ciudades en Estados Unidos, y está diseñado para los individuos que quieren ser sus propios jefes y que quieren utilizar más de su tiempo libre para sus metas y objetivos personales. “Amazon Flex te ofrece las horas que mejor se te acomodan. Tú puedes escoger los tiempos que son mejores para ti, y ellos te ofrecen trabajo durante esos horarios”, dijo Villaruel. “Yo he trabajado por tiempo completo para el Condado de San Diego por casi cinco años, y esa Navidad fue difícil tener horas extras”. Una cometa voló por el cielo, se cortó un pastel, se convivió en un pícnic y se realizó una comunión binacional a lo largo del extremo occidental de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México para conmemorar el 47 aniversario de un espacio con diversos significados, entre ellos la amistad entre los dos países. La celebración siguió una tradición que comenzó cuando el parque abrió por primera vez en 1971, con la primera dama Pat Nixon inaugurando el parque y proclamando: "Que nunca haya un muro entre estas dos grandes naciones, solo amistad." Grandes cercas de acero han sido eregidas desde la inauguración del parque, y este año hay nuevas reglas. A principios de año, la Patrulla Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos dijo que ya no abriría una puerta en la cerca fronteriza. En febrero también anunció que no más de 10 personas podrían estar en lo que la Patrulla Fronteriza llama el “Círculo de la Amistad”, un área entre dos vallas, y también limitó el tiempo que se puede estar en dicha zona a unos 30 minutos. El Centro de Posgrado y Estudios Sor Juana en Tijuana informó en rueda de prensa del ofrecimiento de un proyecto de estudio de un diplomado denominado Preservación del Patrimonio Cultural en Ciudades Fronterizas, mismo que tendrá una duración de seis meses, con clases sabatinas que dará inicio el próximo 22 de septiembre de 2018 y finalizará en marzo de 2019. El diplomado destaca por su carácter binacional, incluyendo en su desarrollo especialistas de Tijuana y San Diego. En la presentación estuvo la coordinadora del diplomado María Eugenia Castillo Curry, la maestra en restauración de monumentos por la UNAM y representante del Consejo Internacional de Monumentos y Sitios José Gabriel Rivera Delgado, y Josué Beltrán Castillo, quienes forman parte de la planta docente. El objetivo del diplomado es capacitar a personas para gestionar, identificar, documentar, evaluar, proteger, y rescatar inmuebles y paisajes de valor cultural en la frontera. En la rueda de prensa se dio a conocer la planta docente, el programa, el perfil de ingreso y egreso de los interesados en tomarlo y otros detalles. Destaca la propiedad del diplomado por tener un carácter binacional, no solo porque en él se abordará el rescate del patrimonio cultural en la frontera, sino también porque la planta docente está conformada por académicos especialistas en temas de preservación del patrimonio cultural pertenecientes a instituciones de Tijuana y San Diego. También se conocerán principios históricos, teóricos y normativos en torno a la preservación del patrimonio cultural, así como métodos de identificación, clasificación y preservación, en función de crear una metodología y un modelo de preservación regional, aún inexistente. Una nueva estación de bomberos que brindará servicio a Hillcrest y a los vecindarios aledaños abrió sus puertas esta semana, marcando la cuarta estación de bomberos que se abre en lo que va del año, y la novena estación que ha sido construida o modernizada desde que el alcalde de San Diego Kevin Faulconer tomó su puesto. Faulconer fue acompañado por el regidor Chris Ward; el asambleísta estatal Todd Gloria, el nuevo jefe del Departamento de Bomberos Colin Stowell y líderes de la comunidad para la inauguración de la modernizada estación 5 de los bomberos de San Diego, la cual fue originalmente construida en 1951. “Estamos en medio de uno de los auges más grandes en la historia del Ayuntamiento con niveles récord en inversiones para mejorar la calidad de vida en nuestras comunidades”, dijo Faulconer. “Esta nueva estación en Hillcrest es un ejemplo de cómo los proyectos comunitarios pueden beneficiar a nuestros vecindarios y a las futuras generaciones. Luego de varias décadas de abandono por líderes pasados, ahora finalmente estás moviéndonos hacia delante y cumpliendo con proyectos que ansiaban nuestros residentes”. Acusan al Gobierno de Presionar a Inmigrantes a Renunciar a su Derecho de Asilo POR ALEXANDRA MENDOZA
Los abogados que representan a inmigrantes que tras haber sido separados de sus hijos en la frontera fueron deportados sin ellos insisten en que algunos se vieron forzados a aceptar su salida y renunciar a su derecho de solicitar asilo político ya que se les hizo creer que era la única forma de volver a ver a los menores. En un informe presentado esta semana tanto por el gobierno de Estados Unidos como por abogados de la Unión Americana de Libertades Civiles (ACLU), quienes interpusieron una demanda colectiva a nombre de los padres afectados, se hizo saber que ya se cuenta con la información de contacto de todos los inmigrantes que fueron deportados sin sus hijos. La ACLU en conjunto con un comité conformado por asociaciones civiles se ha comunicado con 231 de ellos, de los cuales, 183 han indicado de forma preliminar su deseo sobre la reunificación, mientras que otros 23 aún están considerando sus opciones, revela el reporte
presentado ante la corte. Por otro lado, unos 10 menores ya han sido reunificados en el país en que se encuentran los padres y otros 15 están a la espera de los trámites finales. Sin embargo, la ACLU ha detectado casos en que los padres dicen haber sido engañados para aceptar su deportación del país y renunciar a su petición de asilo político, que fuera la razón por la cual viajaron hasta la frontera. “Estos incidentes incluyen a padres a quienes se les dijo que necesitaban aceptar su deportación y no buscar asilo político para ser reunificados con sus hijos, y padres a los que se les pidió firmar documentos que no entendían y en idiomas que no hablan, que hizo que renunciaran a su derecho”, subrayó el abogado Lee Gelernt. La administración del presidente Donald Trump ha indicado que 139 padres han renunciado a su derecho de ser reunificados con sus hijos. La ACLU ha solicitado al juez que conceda el regreso de algunos inmigrantes que fueron separados de sus hijos para que continúen su proceso

Evento de Policías Genera Conversaciones con la Comunidad POR ANDREA LÓPEZ-VILLAFAÑA
No se presenta la oportunidad diariamente de tomar un café con los policías del Departamento de Policía del Puerto de San Diego y hablar sinceramente sobre los asuntos urgentes en la comunidad, así como sobre el trabajo de los oficiales del departamento. La Prensa San Diego y varios miembros de la comunidad de Barrio Logan hicieron justamente eso el miércoles por la mañana durante el segundo evento "Coffee with a Cop", o Café con un Policía, del departamento en el café Ryan Bros. Al entrar al edificio, fuimos bienvenidos por un sonriente sargento, Víctor Bañuelos, quien es responsable de organizar Café con un Policía y otros eventos de alcance comunitario como el sargento de vigilancia comunitaria del departamento. Nos ofreció un café caliente y pasteles antes de que comenzáramos a hablar sobre los esfuerzos del departamento para interactuar más con la comunidad, la tecnología que usan para ayudar a resolver crímenes y sus últimos esfuerzos para ayudar a vacunar a personas en el Puerto contra la hepatitis A. El Departamento de Policía del Puerto de San Diego sirve el Puerto de San Diego, el Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego y las zonas aledañas a la Bahía de San Diego. Generalmente, los policías del Puerto pueden ser encontrados patrullando el área alrededor de Seaport Village, pero también en el agua mientras patrullan la bahía. Sin embargo, en esta mañana en particular, cerca de 10 policías y el Jefe Mark Stainbrook estaban tomando un descanso y entablando una conversación con los miembros de la comunidad que entraron al café. Hace unos seis meses, el departamento organizó su primer evento Café con un Policía frente al Port

Benjamín Prado, activista con el Comité de Amigos Americanos de San Diego, coincide en que muchos padres pudieron haber sido engañados. “Todo indica que fue así”, consideró. Sin embargo, el gobierno federal ha insistido en que ha informado a los miembros de la demanda colectiva de forma correcta. Este jueves, la administración informó sobre su progreso en el cumplimiento de un mandato emitido por el juez de San Diego, Dana Sabraw quien ordenó la reunificación de todas las familias que fueron separadas en la frontera. Dichos números no distan mucho de lo presentado la semana pasada, pues la administración aún mantiene bajo su cuidado a 528 niños, 23 de ellos menores de cinco años del total de 2,654 que fueron alejados de sus padres a consecuencia de la política de “cero tolerancia” contra la inmigración irregular.
Pavilion en Broadway Pier, donde residentes se detuvieron para tomar café, así como para preguntar sobre el trabajo de la Policía del Puerto. Debido a que ese evento tuvo una gran participación, decidieron organizar otro en Barrio Logan. Y aunque la comunidad no se encuentra en su jurisdicción, el Parque César Chávez y la Terminal Marítima de la Décima Avenida, que se encuentran justo al lado de la comunidad, sí lo están. Bañuelos agregó que aunque no vigilan el área, muchos miembros de la comunidad trabajan y juegan en su jurisdicción, por lo que el evento brindó una buena oportunidad para que los residentes hicieran preguntas. "Café con un Policía nos brinda la oportunidad única de involucrar a nuestra comunidad en un ambiente informal", dijo Bañuelos a La Prensa San Diego. "Creemos que esto ayuda a fortalecer nuestras relaciones". El Jefe Stainbrook se unió a nosotros en nuestra conversación sobre la importancia de involucrarse con la comunidad y compartió historias de su carrera en la aplicación de la ley y sobre cómo la tecnología ha ayudado al departamento a resolver crímenes recientes. Mediante el uso de pruebas de ADN, los investigadores pudieron encontrar al sospechoso vinculado a un apuñalamiento a lo largo del embarcadero y con el uso del mapeo sonar pudieron encontrar dos cuerpos bajo el agua relacionados con dos incidentes separados. La Policía del Puerto también ha proporcionado vacunas contra la hepatitis A a personas de su jurisdicción para ayudar a aumentar el número de personas que han sido vacunadas. What began as a side job to bring in extra cash during the Christmas season became a financial support for the Villaruel family of Chula Vista. Ruel Villaruel, a father of a 7 year-old, started working with a program called Amazon Flex, in December 2016, after a friend recommended this job for him so Ruel could pay for Christmas presents for his family. Amazon Flex is an innovative program launched in 2015 that gives individuals (delivery partners) the opportunity to be their own boss as an independent contractor while delivering for Amazon. This program is currently available in more than 50 cities, and is typically suited for individuals who want to be their own boss and have more time to pursue individual goals and dreams. “Amazon Flex gives you the hours that best accommodate to you. You can choose the time you are most available, and they offer you work during those times,” Villaruel said. “I’ve been working full-time for the San Diego County for almost five years, and that Christmas it was hard to get extra hours, so one of my friends that worked in the program, invited me in.” Villaruel works 48 hours each week in his full-time job, and is only available after 5 p.m. each workday, so Amazon Flex was one of the few jobs he could find that accommodated to his schedule. “Besides the schedule flexibility, the pay is fairly decent. I liked that Amazon Flex could fit my family lifestyle besides the great scheduling,” Villaruel said. “The extra money gave opportunities to my family, it gave us the opportunity to do more things that we couldn’t afford before.” In December 2016, Villaruel was able to buy Christmas presents for his AMAZON ON PAGE 13

‘G.I. JOSE’ EXPLORA UNA HISTORIA ÚNICA

Una olla de comida sigue cocinando en la estufa mientras agentes de Inmigración y Aduanas buscan a la madre indocumentada de un joven que sirvió en el ejército de los Estados Unidos. Esta es la historia de "G.I. José " en el cortometraje más nuevo de Alejandro Márquez Vela que se exhibirá en el próximo GI Film Festival de San Diego. "G.I. José" cuenta la historia de un joven que acaba de regresar del ejército y se encuentra en una situación difícil donde debe decidir entre proteger a su familia o seguir las leyes del país que juró proteger. El cortometraje también explora el concepto de que una persona que tiene la edad para servir en el ejército, todavía no puede darle la ciudadanía a su familia porque él no tiene 21 años. El director de la película, Márquez Vela, habló con La Prensa San Diego sobre la inspiración detrás de la película y por qué quería enfocarse en el punto de vista de las familias que viven en los Estados Unidos. A pot of food is still cooking on the stove while Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents look for the undocumented mother of a young man who served in the United States military. This is the story of “G.I. Jose” in Alejandro Marquez Vela’s newest short film that is set to screen in the upcoming GI Film Festival San Diego. “G.I. Jose” tells the story of a young man who just returned from deployment and is placed in a difficult situation where he must decide between protecting his family or following the laws of the country he swore to protect. The short film also explores the concept that a person who is of age to serve in the military, still cannot give his family citizenship because he is not 21. The film’s director Marquez Vela spoke to La Prensa San Diego about the inspiration behind the film and why he wanted to focus on the point of view of families who live in the United States. Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Marquez Vela said he often saw movies about immigration from the point of view of people who are from Mexico, but he wanted to explore the stories of families who live in the U.S. “I began to hear stories from the families that are already in the (U.S.) and people that had already crossed the border and had already had their children and family here, and the kind of stories they were living,” Marquez Vela said. While the topic of immigration and family separation has risen in political conversation, stories like that of Marquez Vela’s main character Jose are not completely fictional, however they are underrepresented in mainstream media. Marquez Vela said it is an honor to be a part of the festival especially because the short film explores a social issue such as immigration. “It is an honor because I know these kinds of festivals are only just about showing film but also about showing films with a purpose,” Marquez Vela said. “It is double gratification to be a part of the GI Festival.” The GI Film Festival San Diego features films that tell the stories of underrepresented individuals in the military. “G.I. Jose” will screen on Friday, Sept. 28, during the festival, which runs from Tuesday, Sept. 25 to Sept. 30 at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. Marquez Vela said he hope that the greatest takeaway for those who watch the film is that there is always a better way to solve conflicts

Xolos Deben Morder a los Tiburones Tijuana visita a un equipo de Veracruz que enfrenta una grave crisis deportiva y administrativa

Un equipo en picada que enfrenta una auditoría contable, un entrenador que no ha trabajado en 11 años y un dueño que enfrenta el rechazo de su propia afición. Ese es el panorama que los Xolos de Tijuana encontrarán el domingo cuando visiten a unos Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz en crisis. El duelo de la séptima jornada del Torneo Apertura 2018 enfrenta a dos equipos que están en la necesidad de sumar un triunfo que los aleje de los malos momentos. El equipo del puerto jarocho se encuentra en severos aprietos deportivos y administrativos, algo que el conjunto de Tijuana debe de aprovechar para sacar los tres puntos en disputa. El problema es que desde que los dirige Diego Cocca, los Xolos no ha conseguido una solo victoria como visitante en temporada regular. En las ocho salidas que tuvo el torneo pasado, la escuadra
canina cosechó cinco empates y tres derrotas en patio ajeno. En la actual campaña, los Xolos cayeron en su visita al estadio de los Tigres y la semana pasada corrieron con la misma suerte en la cancha de Toluca. Desde que ascendió a la Primera División de la Liga MX, Tijuana ha enfrentado en 10 ocasiones el cuadro de Veracruz. La balanza historia se inclina en favor de los Tiburones Rojos al sumar cuatro triunfos, tres empates y la misma cantidad de derrotas. La última aparición de los Xolos en el Estadio Luis Pirata Fuente se registró en abril pasado y en esa ocasión el equipo jarocho se impuso1-0 a Tijuana. La escuadra de los perros fronterizos nunca ha podido conseguir un triunfo en cinco visitas a Veracruz. El juego del domingo corresponde a la séptima jornada del torneo toda vez que entre semana se efectuó la sexta fecha del certamen.

Pocas han sido las ocasiones en el que el nombre de los Chargers acompaña la lista de los equipos con serias posibilidades para ganar el Super Bowl. En la temporada de 2018, la escuadra de Los Ángeles se soma como una de las más poderosas de la NFL. A dos años de haber dejado la ciudad de San Diego, los Chargers se encuentran en una posición inmejorable para ganar su primer título en 59 años de existencia. La explosividad de su arsenal ofensivo, aunado a la gran calidad de sus jugadores defensivos, hace que los Chargers sean considerados uno de los mejores equipos en la liga. Linea por línea, los Chargers han conformado un grupo de gladiadores que bien podría marchar rumbo al Super Bowl LIII que se celebrará el 3 de febrero en Atlanta. QUARTERBACK Philip Rivers va a iniciar su temporada número 15 en los controles ofensivos de los Chargers y a sus 36 años de edad no da señales de que su retiro esté a la vuelta de la esquina. En los últimos siete juegos de la temporada pasada, Rivers promedió 310 yardas, el mejor en la NFL en ese lapso, y encaminó a su
ofensiva a terminar como la número uno de la liga en cuanto a yardas ganadas por aire se refiere. Con este veterano mariscal de campo al mando, el equipo de Los Ángeles tendrá gran oportunidad de ganar la mayoría de sus encuentros. POR AIRE Los Chargers van a extrañar mucho la presencia de su ala cerrada Hunter Henry, quien se perderá la temporada por una seria lesión de rodilla. Aún así, el equipo tiene una explosiva colección de receptores abiertos. Por su velocidad, manos seguras y dotes atléticos, Keenan Allen y Tyrell Williams serán una pesadilla para las defensivas rivales. Con las 1,393 yardas que consiguió la temporada pasada, Allen impuso la segunda mejor marca de yardas ganadas en un solo año en la historia de la franquicia. Tu sagacidad e inteligencia, combinadas con un don de mando impuesto a base de infundir temor, de sembrar dudas y de crear conflictos, te llevaron a ejercer el poder de manera autoritaria. Como buen dictador, siempre fuiste el primero en dar un manotazo en la mesa para poner orden. Te gustaba imponer tus arranques viscerales y no dabas lugar a la cordura y la razón para tomar la mejor de las decisiones. Tu forma de ser te llevó a ser blanco de críticas recalcitrantes y de odios bien fundados. Los enemigos que sumaste en tu camino sobrepasan en gran número a aquellos que crees son tus amigos. Por 16 años prometiste hacer del Deportivo Guadalajara el mejor equipo del mundo, el campeón histórico de México, el club más próspero del continente. Nada de eso pudiste lograr y me duele saber que es posible que la vida no te brinde una segunda oportunidad para intentarlo. Sé que estás enfermo, sé que has rescindido todo el poder de tus empresas en tus hijos, sé que estás luchando con todas tus fuerzas para tratar de recuperar tu salud. A tus 63 años de edad, se podría decir que todavía eres un hombre con mucho camino que recorrer, pero eso ya no depende de ti. Ni con todo el dinero del mundo puedes comprar lo que has perdido, y eso es de lamentarse. En los últimos años has sufrido mucho y creo que eso terminó por dinamitar tu cuerpo y tu alma. El Jorge Vergara explosivo, ingenioso, eufórico, retador, altanero, y combativo ya no existe. Para bien y para mal, tu nombre siempre será recordado entre los personajes más pintorescos de la historia del futbol mexicano. SIGUE BRILLANDO ‘SIR DAVE’ El esloveno Aleksander Ceferin, máximo dirigente de la UEFA, ha concedido al exjugador inglés David Beckham el Premio Presidente de la UEFA 2018 por ser “un verdadero icono futbolístico de su generación”. Para Ceferin el esfuerzo de Beckham alrededor del mundo debería celebrarse, ya que ha sido embajador global para el futbol, promocionando este juego y sus valores por todas las esquinas del planeta, además de sus incansables esfuerzos humanitarios, que han ayudado a las vidas de muchos niños. David Beckham, exjugador del Manchester United y Real Madrid, entre otros, recibirá el premio a finales de 2018 en Mónaco. Tras conocer la noticia, Beckham se mostró agradecido y dijo que recoger este premio es un honor para él. Además de sus éxitos en el terreno de juego, Beckham, de 43 años, creó en 2015 su propia fundación ‘7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund’, cuyo objetivo es ayudar a los niños en cuestiones como el acoso escolar, la violencia o el matrimonio infantil, además de garantizar a los más jóvenes la oportunidad de

SE RETIRA CRUZ Víctor Cruz, receptor abierto de los NY Giants, anunció su retiro de la NFL tras ocho temporadas como jugador profesional, y ahora será analista en una cadena de televisión estadounidense. Smoltz dijo que el juego se está hundiendo a sí mismo y no es sostenible de la manera en que se juega hasta hoy. Barrio Logan Residents Help Paint Mural BY ALEXANDRA MENDOZA
Chicano Park will soon boast a new mural, but this time, the artists include Barrio Logan residents. The goal of the mural, titled “Hawkaa” – an indigenous Kumeyaay greeting – is to give the community a voice so they can tell their own story, as well as a reminder as to why it is crucial to protect our environment. Renowned Honduran muralist Alicia M. Siu designed the mural, which was approved by both the Chicano Park Steering Committee and the Environmental Health Coalition (EHC). The concept came out of a series of community workshops in which they brainstormed
ideas for the mural. Essentially, the mural will depict Barrio Logan community members and their struggle to preserve their environment against the latent threat posed by pollution in the surrounding areas, together with a portrait of generations of the Kumeyaay people, native to both San Diego and Northern Baja. “A big part of the mural is to highlight what the community and environmental advocates have achieved,” said Siu. “It is also about showing the vision of the community’s youth; how they see their community and what they see as solutions for addressing air pollution and the health of their own bodies.”
To outline the mural, the design was projected onto a blank wall, and it was the residents themselves who drew the initial lines for the Chicano Park Herb Garden masterpiece. “It was planned this way, for the people to help paint it, whether they can draw or not. That is what makes this fun, to see how it turns out,” added Siu. “I am anxious to see the impact it could have once it is finished. The chosen theme was applauded by Environmental Health Coalition advocates, who have fought for environmental justice for over 20 years. Surrounded by shipyards, the Port, Interstate 5, and a Navy Base, Barrio Logan has been impacted by pollution
for decades. As a result, the community has the highest asthma rates in all of San Diego. “The mural tries to tell today’s story and find solutions,” shared EHC community organizer Jorge Gonzalez. The mural, he said, shows the different community perspectives, both past and present. “There is a lack of continuity from one generation to the next, between the young and the old, not enough dialogue. So, this mural is creating a dialogue, a healthy space for discussion,” said Jorge. “We want to know what the new generations think about the issue; what solutions they have, too. We want to create a platform, and a mural is one way of doing so.”

New Fire Station Opens in Hillcrest BY ANA GOMEZ SALCIDO
A new fire station that will serve Hillcrest and the surrounding areas opened its doors this week, marking the fourth new fire station to open this year and the ninth to be built or renovated since San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer took office. Faulconer was joined by City Councilmember Chris Ward, Assemblymember Todd Gloria, new Fire-Rescue Chief Colin Stowell, and community leaders to officially open the modernized facility first built in 1951. “We’re in the middle of one of the biggest building booms in City history with the record level of investments we’re making to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods,” Faulconer said. “This new fire station in Hillcrest is just the latest example of this surge in community projects that will benefit our neighborhoods for generations to come. After
decades of neglect by past City leaders, we’re finally moving our city forward and delivering the projects our residents have been clamoring for.” Since Faulconer took the mayor office in 2014, he has more than tripled the City’s annual investment in the Capital Improvements Program to fund infrastructure projects – from $179 million in Fiscal Year 2014 to $559 million for the current fiscal year. Those investments have led to a surge of new or upgraded parks, fire stations, libraries, recreation centers, and lifeguard stations, as well as road repair, transportation projects and stormwater upgrades that benefit neighborhoods across the city. Located at 3920 Ninth Avenue, this 10,731-square foot, two-story renovated station includes two-and-ahalf apparatus bays, nine dormitories, a kitchen, day room, watch room, exercise
room and lounge. The bays house a fire engine, a battalion chief vehicle and a utility vehicle. The dormitories sleep one battalion chief, two captains and six firefighters. “Fire Station 5 will provide Hillcrest and the greater uptown community with much needed and deserved public safety resources and personnel,” said Ward. “With the addition of this state-ofthe-art facility residents will have access to excellent neighborhood services that will ensure the quality of life of the community as it continues grow.” It also incorporates best practices from the City’s Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program by including a locker room to keep gear away from living quarters and two separate washing machines for gear exposed to carcinogens. “When I served on the City Council, completing this fire

Becerra began his road towards opening a restaurant by taking a book with recipes he had been creating over the years and the $1,500 he had to his name to buy a taco cart to run taquizas, or taco bars, out of. “I just had this goal but I didn’t know where to begin, so I just started by becoming a taquero,” Becerra recalled. “Everybody thought I was crazy for wanting to be a taquero after having a management job, but it was the only way of getting my foot in the door.” Becerra then started to cook in his home kitchen and running taquizas in people’s backyards and at events he found out about. “My first gigs were just people’s birthday parties, weddings and anything I could get,” Becerra elaborated on his first days as a business owner. “Sometimes I would work at bars and I was working a lot with some of Barrio Logan’s galleries such as Roots Factory and The Spot.” His involvement with galleries and other businesses in the heart of Logan Avenue helped Becerra become further involved with other business owners around the block. After much hard work and effort, Becerra’s taquiza business grew to the point in which setting up a restaurant was, at last, a real possibility. Becerra’s family history in

San Diego and being keen on what was happening in Barrio Logan lead him to open Salud, a taqueria concept which blends great food and drinks with elements of Chicano art and aesthetics. Becerra explained that when his family arrived in San Diego in the early 1900s, they established themselves in Barrio Logan. When he saw the opportunity to open Salud in the historic Bank of Italy building, on the corner of Logan Avenue and Sampson Street, he knew that was where he wanted to set up shop. “There have been a lot of businesses that have opened up in that same corner that have failed and I knew that going into it,” Becerra said. “This street and this place meant so much to me that I wanted Salud to be here and I felt that I could be successful on this corner.” Inside Salud, one is immediately drawn to the artwork that lines the walls of this popular restaurant. “I have an affinity for artwork; I collect art and a lot of the art at Salud is mine,” Becerra explained. “Since we are in an art Mecca it’s fitting to feature art inside the restaurant.” Becerra points out that there are many nuances inside. From the framed artwork all the way down to the numerical order tags, which have been drawn by
neighborhood artists, art has been a great influence on the establishment’s interior design. One is also immediately drawn to the aroma of the tasty food being prepared inside. Using family recipes as a base along with recipes he had been perfecting in his notebook, the menu at Salud has been influenced by Becerra’s hand in its entirety, despite not having a culinary background. “Some items, such as our classic salsa, took about two years to perfect. It took a lot of time and experimenting and if I liked something I would always ask a lot of questions about key ingredients,” Becerra mentioned. All of Becerra’s hard work and attention to detail has paid off. Today, his businesses have earned numerous accolades. San Diego Taco Company has been named best catering company in San Diego on five consecutive years and Salud has won multiple awards for best tacos. “I had no idea this business would grow so much and I feel so blessed,” Becerra stated. “I have never borrowed a cent from anybody, I was just a man with one taco cart and business has grown to 12 taco carts, 50 employees, a restaurant, and a new beer and wine catering company, and a lot of love from the community.”

The park’s 47th celebration was organized by Friends of Friendship Park, El Faro: the Border Church, the Methodist church of San Diego, the Methodist Church of Tijuana, Unified U.S. Deported Veterans, and Veterans for Peace. On this 47th anniversary plans are also underway to create a book of photographs on the history of the park. A fundraising effort is in the works to publish the book, and it could be released in the spring of next year. Vivar said everyone supports securing the border and everyone wants a community free of crime, but he doesn’t see the answer in a wall. He believes a binational park would better serve the community instead. He said one already exists in Canada. A petition has been set up on the Friends of Friendship Park website where the public can sign their support asking the presidents of both countries to build a binational park instead of a wall at the border. “For us, we believe there can be better security by expanding the ties of friendship between the two communities instead of hate,” Vivar explains.

Al interior de Salud, el arte que llena los muros del comedor, cautiva las miradas de los visitantes. “Tengo una afinidad por el arte; yo colecciono arte y muchas obras dentro de Salud son mías”, explicó Becerra. “Al estar en una meca del arte sentí que era apto mostrar arte en el restaurante”. Becerra destaca que hay muchos detalles por dentro del restaurante. Desde los marcos hasta los números de orden, dibujados por artistas del barrio, el arte ha sido una gran influencia sobre el diseño interior del establecimiento. Uno también es cautivado por el aroma de la rica comida que se prepara en la cocina. Usando recetas familiares y recetas que ha ido perfeccionando en su cuaderno, el menú de Salud ha sido diseñado en su totalidad por la mano de Becerra, a pesar de no haber contado con experiencia culinaria. “Algunos artículos como nuestra salsa clásica, tomaron cerca de dos años en perfeccionarlos. Tomó mucho tiempo y experimentación y si probaba algo que me gustaba siempre hacía preguntas acerca de ingredientes clave”, mencionó Becerra. Toda la labor y atención a detalle de Becerra ha dejado frutos. Hoy en día, sus negocios han ganado varios reconocimientos. San Diego Taco Company ha ganado por cinco años consecutivos el premio como mejor servicio de banquetes de San Diego y Salud se ha hecho de múltiples premios por tener los mejores tacos. “No tenía idea de que este negocio crecería tanto y me siento muy dichoso”, declaró Becerra. “Nunca pedí ni un centavo prestado de nadie, sólo era un hombre con su carrito de tacos y ahora hemos crecido a tener 12 carritos de tacos, 50 empleados, un restaurante y un servicio de banquetes de cervezas y vino, y el cariño de la comunidad”.

The letter states, “immigrants from Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean make up a majority of the immigrants in the US. In addition, the majority of the undocumented population in the US are Mexican. Any collection of information that facilitates an undercount of the immigrant population in the U.S. will have a particularly acute impact on the Latino population living in the U.S.”

Sólo irresponsables especuladores podrían festinar ese despropósito, como en realidad lo vienen haciendo. Las posibilidades de obtener pírricos beneficios financieros a cualquier costo, aún el de propiciar una catástrofe ecológica de incalculables consecuencias, es el parecer de quienes, como el autor de esta columna, lo consideran. Ciertamente el “viejo” aeropuerto de la Ciudad de México (Benito Juárez) es obsoleto, disfuncional y antieconómico. Su operatividad está rebasada desde hace varios sexenios. Su mantenimiento es kafkiano; las dos pistas insuficientes y cada vez que las repavimentan se hunden más. Por si fuera poco, la construcción de la terminal 2 fue una disparatada obra de Vicente Fox que solo llenó los bolsillos de corruptos funcionarios. Su funcionalidad es errática y cada vez refleja mayores deficiencias. Y para que hablar de la Terminal 1 que es un caos permanente, suplicio de viajantes que no tienen más alternativa que recurrir a él. En algún momento, se contempló la conveniencia de desarrollar aeropuertos alternos para vuelos nacionales e internacionales. Los de Toluca, Cuernavaca, Puebla, León y Querétaro obedecen a esa lógica, pero están en el abandono precisamente porque juegan a favor del desarrollo regional, aspecto que se contrapone al insaciable apetito de desarrolladores que apuestan toda a las megaobras que multiplican en el corto plazo espectaculares ganancias y, vuelta la burra al trigo, las de irresponsables y corruptos funcionarios. Por el bien de México, de la zona lacustre del vaso de Texcoco y la viabilidad de la mermada y sufrida Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México ojala tenga López Obrador el tino de resolver el entuerto. Los clientes residenciales no tienen porque pagar tarifas de electricidad más caras —como si se tratara de un cheque en blanco— a las compañías de servicios públicos, bajo la excusa de prevenir los incendios forestales. Los legisladores estatales deben rechazar los proyectos de ley mal formulados que aumentarían las tarifas de electricidad de los clientes de California, quienes ya pagan unas de las tarifas más altas del país.
