l primer grupo de 33 migrantes, incluidos 13 niños, de la tercera caravana ya comenzó a llegar Tijuana y, según organizaciones no gubernamentales y fuentes oficiales, podría tratarse de hasta 13,000 personas aunque no todas ellas vengan a la frontera de San Diego. De acuerdo con organizadores del Desayunador Salesiano, que es habitualmente el primer grupo que recibe a los migrantes para alimentarlos, antes del grupo de 33 personas llegaron familias o grupos de dos familias por su cuenta. David, un padre de familia hondureño de 32 años de edad, platicó que luego de recorrer parte de México, las autoridades al grupo de cientos de migrantes que iba adelante en la caravana a la frontera de Piedras Negras, Coahuila, donde permanecían literalmente encerrados y era muy difícil que cruzaran a pedir asilo a través del río a Texas. Luis Natividad DECADES OF STRUGGLE

The growth of our communities can be traced to people who have long been pushing for improvements and positive change. Luis Natividad is one of these community champions. Over the years, “Louie” has been active in the political and activist fronts to bring resources to underprivileged neighborhoods. But despite being a community leader for more than 50 years, Natividad involved in gang activity in his youth. “You see, back in the day in National City there were always territorial disputes,” Natividad said. “When you’re young and have the energy for it, you can do stupid things like get into fights for crossing the street in the wrong part of town.” Natividad began to change his conduct after learning about Chicano ideology and the struggle for the self determination of our communities. “One day a gentleman from Los Angeles came here to talk about the Chicano movement,” Natividad recalled. “In that lecture he showed us how there were no Latino teachers in schools and universities. or lo menos 75 médicos y enfermeras del sur de California atendieron a centenares de migrantes que esperan en refugios en Tijuana para cruzar la frontera a pedir asilo en Estados Unidos, luego de meses de camino desde sus países y estados de origen. “Sabemos que muchos migrantes que llegan a la frontera, aunque reciben alguna ayuda en el camino, sufren de desnutrición, algunos de deshidratación, enfrentan climas extremos que no conocen, viajan sin ropa adecuada, así que necesitan mucho de nuestra ayuda”, dijo la doctora Sally Loaeza, de un hospital privado de Los Ángeles. Se trata de un contingente del Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Salud que integra a doctores y enfermeras de hospitales tanto privados como públicos de Los Ángeles y el Condado de Orange. Las familias de la tercera caravana de migrantes centroamericanos comienzan a llegar por ahora lentamente a Tijuana, pero se espera que en unos

meses arriben hasta 13 mil personas, incluidos menores de edad. La enfermera Roxett Villegas, del hospital público de Los Ángeles, explicó que el equipo espera regresar varias veces en los próximos meses para apoyar a la comunidad migrante que busca asilo, principalmente en California. “Por ahora lo que parece que más afecta a las familias es el clima. No tienen chamarras gruesas, impermeables, ni calcetines gruesos, viajan la mayoría con tenis, incluidos los niños, así que vemos bastantes enfermos de las vías respiratorias”, dijo la enfermera.

La visita fue a por lo menos dos refugios, Espacio Migrante, que acaba de abrir un nuevo albergue en las inmediaciones del centro de Tijuana cerca del paso peatonal oeste a San Ysidro y Movimiento Juventud 2000, que este domingo cumplió 26 años. Aunque en el primero solo había por ahora algunas familias migrantes, encontraron menores con resfrío, catarro, con malestares estomacales, a un padre de familia con un dedo fracturado en la mano derecha, y entre deportados varios hombres mayores que necesitaban revisiones de niveles de azúcar en la sangre y presión arterial, además de consejos médicos.

Don Salvador, un señor de 60 años deportado de la zona de Fresno, dijo no recordar cuándo fue la última vez que le hicieron una revisión médica. Una doctora del grupo de solidaridad que vino a Tijuana desde Los Ángeles le dijo que debía cuidar su alimentación y conseguir medicamento para controlar el azúcar, que posiblemente tenía diabetes. “Es que en Fresno pues yo no iba a la clínica, no fui, ya ve que está dura la migración. Una vez llegaron hasta el campo unos doctores y me dijeron que fuera a verlos pero ya no fui. A la mejor y sí tengo diabetes, yo no sé”, dijo el señor. Un padre de familia de Tegucigalpa dijo por su parte que en Honduras sí llevaban a los niños a citas médicas y vacunación, pero no su esposa ni él habían tenido ninguna revisión. La mamá había tenido cuidados prenatales pero no otros personales. Los médicos de California entregaron además de medicamentos, artículos de higiene personal, cepillos y pasta dentales, pañales desechables, artículos de

Week-Long STEM Celebration to Kick Off BY MARIO A. CORTEZ

An eight-day-long celebration of science and engineering activities is about to kick off this weekend. The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering, to be held on March 2 at Petco Park, and its Festival Week, held through March 10 at several locations countywide, is returning with a full lineup of activities and innovation for families and science aficionados. Attendees to Saturday’s free inaugural festival, hosted by local science nonprofit Biocom Institute, will be able to interact with hundreds of exhibitors and participate in activities related to

science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Those present will also get a sneak peek at Festival Week features to come just days later. As part of Festival Week, students grades K-12, along with their families and any STEMcurious community members, can continue in the activities and celebrations at their nearest event venue. Events at these venues are free to the public and range from hands-on activities to dynamic speaker presentations. These countywide events, known as STEM in Your Back, open great opportunities to those living in places without much access to the sciences outside of

the classroom. According to Sarah Pagano of the Biocom Institute, these events combine the feel of a community gathering with teaching and opportunities for people to approach local companies in the sciences. “The events are creating a bridge for the local community with businesses and academia so people know that there are a lot of companies in their area that are supporting STEM and STEM education,” said Pagano. Venues for STEM in Your Backyard include the Logan Heights Library on March 5, High Tech High’s San Marcos campus on March 6, Hillsdale MIddle School in El Cajon on March 7,

and Castle Park High School in Chula Vista on March 8. Festival Week organizers believe that bringing STEM programming and activities to underserved communities with high percentages of students of color, such as Logan Heights, El Cajon, and South Chula Vista, will help with creating interest in STEM-related fields among students in the community. Guests, exhibitors, and activities are tailored to each specific and reflect the companies and people working in the sciences. “We really want to make sure that we have representation, STEM ON PAGE 11

SD Airport Sets Passenger Traffic Record BY ANA GOMEZ SALCIDO

San Diego International Airport (SAN) served 24 million passengers in 2018, a record-high total and a nearly 10 percent increase over the previous year. Of the 24 million passengers, more than 1 million were international passengers – a 19 percent increase over 2017. That is also a record for the airport, according to a new airport report. In addition to a strong economy and robust tourism industry, several factors contributed to the increase in 2018, including Air Canada adding a third daily flight to Vancouver; Lufthansa beginning service to Frankfurt; Japan Airlines flying a higher density aircraft and operating at one of the highest load factors of any mainland U.S.-Tokyo flight in their system; Edelweiss carrying 49 percent more passengers to Zurich in 2018 than they did in 2017; and Southwest adding Puerto Vallarta service in 2018 and increasing service to Cabo. Overall, 16 new routes were added in 2018, and all but two of the 17 airlines serving SAN experienced an increase in passenger traffic. Southwest added the most passengers, carrying 794,401 more in 2018 than in 2017, followed by Alaska Airlines with 456,360 and United with 306,837. “This is a tremendous time of growth for not only SAN but the entire San Diego region,” said airport president and CEO Kim Becker. “With more people choosing San Diego as their destination of choice, we are looking ahead at projects to accommodate this trend and provide the world-class airport experience our customers and community deserve.” SAN is on course to serve more than 25 million passengers next year. To accommodate recent and projected increases, the airport’s next master-planning phase, the Airport Development Plan (ADP), is under way. The centerpiece of the ADP is the replacement of 51-year-old Terminal 1 with an attractive, modern and more efficient terminal that will enhance the overall airport experience. This year, the San Diego International Airport together with San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and regional agencies led by SANDAG, will address the long-standing issue of forging a better public transit connection to the airport. The San Diego International Airport was founded in 1928, and today it’s the busiest single-runway airport in the nation. There are 51 gates in Terminals 1 and 2, with a new Terminal 1 slated for 2022, while Terminal 2 became the first LEED Platinum certified airport terminal in the world in 2013.

Congressional Republicans Sacrificed Themselves for Trump

he complete capitulation of Republicans at the feet of Donald Trump was on full display Wednesday when Michael Cohen testified before Congress. Cohen, as everyone knows, was Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and admitted “fixer” for over 10 years before he was charged last year with various crimes, including tax evasion, violating campaign finance laws, and lying to Congress during his previous testimony. He has admitted he negotiated hush money payments to two women that claim to have had affairs with the married Trump before he was President but in an attempt to protect Trump during the campaign. Cohen plead guilty and will serve up to three years for his crimes, but during the past several months has met seven times with the prosecutors as part of his sentencing agreement to provide testimony and evidence in on-going investigations. When Cohen testified before Congress last year, he stated that he worked on developing a Trump Tower project in Moscow between 2014 and 2016. At the time, Cohen testified that they ended those discussions early in 2016 before Trump won the primaries and later the presidency. Cohen’s testimony was in line with various statements made by Donald Trump, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Donald Trump, Jr. that the project was abandoned before the election. Later, when confronted with evidence by the Special Counsel, Cohen admitted that negotiations on the Moscow project continued through the end of 2016, right up to Trump’s election as President. Even Trump and his TV attorney Rudy Giuliani have now had to admitted the Moscow project was still active throughout 2016, during the time that Russians were interfering with the election and obviously helping Trump by hurting Hillary Clinton. Cohen agreed to testify before Congress this week to provide more details on his experiences with Trump over 10 years of working closely with him. During his testimony, Cohen

provided financial documents from the Trump Organization, as well as a check from Trump’s personal account and signed by Trump himself in 2017 as part of the reimbursement to Cohen for the hush money payment to Stormy Daniels. Under Cohen’s sentencing agreement, he must continue to cooperate with prosecutors on various continuing investigations, and, of course, he cannot lie to them without facing additional penalties. During his testimony under oath and under penalty of perjury, Cohen admitted he had previously lied to Congress in order to protect Trump and that Trump’s lawyers had reviewed and approved his written testimony before he gave it. Democrats asked Cohen about his interactions with Trump on the hush money payments, and Cohen answered that Trump knew about and directed him to make the payments, directly contradicting what Trump has said publicly. Several questions and answers centered on fraudulent financial statements Trump’s company provided to banks, as well as Trump purposely understating the value of his properties to illegally reduce his tax payments. But, every time Republican committee members addressed Cohen, they spent their entire time attacking him and calling him a liar. They directly dismissed Cohen as an unreliable witness because he previously lied to Congress, with one of the Republicans even using the children’s rhyme, “liar, liar, pants on fire!” They are right; Cohen lied to Congress during his first testimony. But what did he lie about? Cohen is guilty of lying to align his testimony with what Donald Trump was saying publicly. He lied to protect Trump. He lied in loyalty to Trump. He lied about lies. It has now become clear that everyone related to the Trump Moscow project lied, including Donald Trump himself. Why didn’t any of those people complain when Cohen lied to Congress last year if what he was saying was a lie? It’s clear his lies helped Trump and were even approved by Trump’s lawyers.

This week, as Cohen sat before Congress, he knew exactly what the prosecutors of the Special Counsel and Southern District of New York know and can prove. He knew he could not lie anymore or he would face further prosecution. Cohen, a hugely flawed man, filed false tax returns and lied to banks for his own financial gain and those crimes were not committed for Trump’s benefit. That’s undisputed. But Cohen was also convicted of violating elections laws by hiding hush money payments to the two women claiming affairs with Trump. Those clearly were not for Cohen’s personal and financial gain, but for Trump’s benefit. Cohen can prove he was reimbursed by Trump for those payments, and that’s illegal. Cohen has been convicted for the illegal campaign contributions but Trump has not, even though he was the organizer and beneficiary of them. Cohen has lied, but, contrary to what Republicans implied this week, Cohen’s testimony was not the first time that a known liar or felon swore to tell the truth before a Congressional committee. In June 1973, White House Chief of Staff John Dean testified before the Senate Watergate Committee and explained his involvement in providing hush money payments to the Watergate burglars, exposed President Nixon’s “enemies list”, and disclosed private conversations with the President. Just two months later, Dean was sentenced to up to four years in prison for his crimes. The next year, Nixon was forced to resigned from the Presidency. He was a liar turned witness. In 1963, Joseph Valachi, a hitman for the Genovese crime family, testified before a Senate committee investigating organized crime. Although he was a known mafia soldier, Valachi helped expose the organization and inter-workings of the mob that led to the prosecution of several mafia leaders, and he is even credited with popularizing the term “Cosa Nostra”. The mafia called him a “rat” for testifying. (Ironically, Donald Trump has called Cohen a rat for testifying, too.) And nearly every criminal prosecu-

tion of drug dealers, gang members, and mobsters rely on the testimony of criminals, felons, and even murderers. Without the information provided by insiders, or rats as they’re called by the bigger crooks, many more criminals would not have been brought to justice. Michael Cohen committed financial crimes and tax evasion. His conduct in support of Donald Trump was also illegal. He will report to prison on May 6 to serve up to three years to pay his debt to society. But Cohen’s testimony this week shouldn’t be dismissed outright just because of his precious bad acts. Under his conviction and cooperation agreement, Cohen is very tightly monitored by federal prosecutors. Any crimes, perjury, or lies before Congress would only lead to more time in prison, and more personal and financial damage. So Cohen has no reason to lie to Congress, and instead, a tremendous amount to lose in doing so. Republicans in Congress squandered their opportunity to try to get to the truth because they were too worried about who would be damaged by the revelations. They have again failed to exercise their independent authority as a check on the Executive Branch. They put party before country. Congressional Republicans chose to run interference for Trump, and did his dirty work by attacking Cohen in an attempt to discredit him and further protect the President. Not one asked questions that would or could get to the truth. They sacrificed themselves at the altar of Donald Trump with the same kind of blind loyalty that Cohen himself once practiced. Those members of Congress should consider what that sort of blind loyalty led Cohen to do for a man that has never reciprocated loyalty to others. House Republicans had a chance to set partisan politics aside in furtherance of the truth, but instead they expect the public to believe that the little guy who lied to protect his boss is the real bad guy. Cohen threw away his career and soon his freedom because of his loyalty to Trump, but he may very well not be the last.

humanitarios que les otorgó el gobierno de México, pueden viajar por el país sin restricciones, y decidieron llegar a la frontera de California a probar mejor suerte que en Texas. Autoridades y grupos civiles discrepan sobre la cantidad de migrantes que ya se encuentra en Mexicali, con planes de llegar a Tijuana. Según el Instituto Nacional de Migración se trata de solamente 150 personas, incluidos los niños; pero grupos que albergan a los migrantes indican que hay por lo menos 500 personas. Lo difícil va a ser cuando lleguen a Tijuana, explicó el coordinador del refugio Juventud 2000, José María García Lara, “porque hasta donde sabemos todos los albergues están casi llenos, no vamos a tener un lugar dónde alojar a tanta gente”. Los propios migrantes han reportado en las últimas semanas grupos de migrantes de Medio Oriente, de Rusia, de países africanos, además de los centroamericanos que buscan asilo, familias mexicanas que también buscan refugio y llegan principalmente de los estados de Michoacán y Guerrero, además de los mexicanos deportados. La mayoría de ellos se concentra en la ciudad de Tijuana, porque hay un mayor número de organizaciones que ayudan a los migrantes y se lleva un orden para pasar por turno al paso peatonal a solicitar asilo. Al parecer de David, el padre de familia hondureño, el flujo de migrantes va a continuar hacia la frontera. “Con el permiso que me dieron, yo ya puedo trabajar en México, pero aún así sigue siendo muy difícil para nosotros", afirmó.

Leader of Immigration Fraud Pleads Guilty

Líder de Fraude de Inmigración se Declara Culpable

Hardev Panesar pleaded guilty in federal court in San Diego, admitting that he orchestrated a long-running immigration-fraud scheme that tricked more than 100 victims out of millions of dollars based on false claims that they could secure immigration status in the United States. Panesar pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel to all counts, including one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, three counts of wire fraud, four counts of false impersonation of a federal officer, and one count of structuring financial transactions. Panesar also pleaded guilty to a separate count of failing to appear in court, resulting from his decision “jump bail” and flee to Mexico in June 2018, where he remained a fugitive for two months. According to his plea agreement, Panesar admitted that from at least 2012 through May 24, 2017, he defrauded immigrants and aliens by inducing them to pay money to him based on fraudulent claims that he and his co-conspirators could obtain legal status in the United States for the victims and their families. Panesar managed to defraud the victims by, in part, impersonating an official from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and claiming that he had the power to stop deportation proceedings. To trick his victims, Panesar repeatedly showed fake agency credentials, provided immigration applications, and took fingerprints of victims. He often demanded more money to speed up the process or guarantee the immigration documents by a certain date. Panesar and his co-conspirators never delivered on their promise to provide immigration documents, despite collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars from

victims. As part of the plea agreement, Panesar agreed to pay approximately $2.5 million in restitution to his many victims. Panesar also admitted that on June 21, 2018, he fled to Tijuana, Mexico, the day before a hearing scheduled in this case. Panesar remained a fugitive, hiding in Mexico, until August 13, 2018, when he was arrested by Mexican authorities and expelled back to the United States. Panesar has been in custody ever since, pending trial. Panesar is scheduled to be sentenced on May 10, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Curiel. Hardev Panesar se declaró culpable en la corte federal en San Diego, admitiendo que orquestó un esquema de fraude de inmigración multimillonario con el que defraudó a más de 100 víctimas de millones de dólares luego de prometerles que les aseguraría su estatus migratorio en Estados Unidos. Panesar se declaró culpable frente al juez federal Gonzalo P. Curiel a todos los cargos en su contra incluyendo un cargo de conspiración para cometer fraude electrónico, tres cargos de fraude electrónico, cuatro cargos de falsa personificación de un oficial federal, y un cargo de estructuración de transacciones financieras. Panesar también se declaró culpable por faltar a una audiencia de la corte, luego de que huyó a México en junio del 2018, en donde permaneció bajo estatus de fugitivo por dos meses. De acuerdo a su acuerdo de culpabilidad, Panesar admitió que desde al menos 2012 y hasta el 24 de mayo del

2017, estafó a inmigrantes y extranjeros provocando a que le pagaran a base de reclamaciones fraudulentas por parte de él y sus conspiradores de presuntamente poder obtener un estatus legal en Estados Unidos para las víctimas y sus familias. Panesar logró defraudar a sus víctimas, en parte porque se hizo pasar por un oficial del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) asegurando que tenía el poder de detener los casos de deportación. Al engañar a sus víctimas, Panesar repetidamente uso credenciales falsas de agencias federales, proporcionó solicitudes de inmigración e incluso tomó huellas digitales de sus víctimas. El acusado constantemente demandó dinero para apresurar el proceso o para presuntamente asegurar los documentos de inmigración para cierta fecha. ersecuciones que terminan en accidentes, uno de ellos fatal, y uso de pickups para derribar la barda metálica fronteriza son parte de un aumento en uso de vehículos para ingresar sin permiso al país, según la Patrulla Fronteriza en San Diego. La institución ha reportado todos los incidentes en la zona del este de San Diego. Primero, el 17 de febrero unos patrulleros encontraron derribado un tramo de barda en las inmediaciones de Campo. Los oficiales reportaron y en respuesta se desplegó una búsqueda que encontró sin conductor una pickup que habían usado para tirar la barda y detuvieron a 24 migrantes que la patrulla asegura que viajaban en ese vehículo.

Dos días más tarde en Otay Mesa, la patrulla protagonizó una persecución a un auto en que viajaban por camino de terracería tres personas. Momentos después, informó esa agencia, el vehículo perseguido perdió el control y se estrelló contra un camión comercial que estaba estacionado. El conductor de ese auto y el pasajero que iba adelante murieron en el impacto, mientras que una mujer que iba atrás resultó herida de gravedad y fue hospitalizada. Menos de 24 horas después de ese accidente, la patrulla se involucró en otra persecución que terminó con un vehículo que salió del camino entre volteretas. Cuatro personas que iban en ese vehículo tipo SUV tuvieron que ser hospitalizadas y la quinta personas fue atendida con primeros auxilios pero sin que requiriera ir al hospital.

Al hablar sobre esas persecuciones, Pedro Ríos, director del Comité de Servicios Amigos Americanos, dijo que a su parecer los patrulleros en esas dos persecuciones sabían que los migrantes subían a los vehículos pero les dieron tiempo suficiente para que terminaran de subir y entonces perseguirlos, cuando podían arrestarlos antes de que abordaron los vehículos. Esta no es la primera vez que la patrulla enfrenta acusaciones de ese tipo. Hace dos años la Asociación Nacional de Agencias Policiacas emitió una serie de recomendaciones a la patrulla fronteriza cuyos oficiales se atravesaban a vehículos en marcha, disparaban al conductor y luego argumentaban que los agentes habían sido envestidos. El 22 de febrero, la patrulla reportó que una segunda pickup tiró otra sección del muro

fronterizo en el este del condado. Según la patrulla, como ocurrió con el primer caso, el conductor del vehículo que transportaba a los indocumentados logró darse a la fuga a trote, mientras que los agentes de migración consiguieron detener a 22 migrantes que eran transportados en ese pickup de doble cabina. Esta es la primera vez que la patrulla fronteriza reporta insistentes casos de intentos de ingreso al derribar parte de la barda de seis pies de altura. En ambos casos la agencia uso las redes sociales para divulgar fotografías de la manera en que los vehículos tiraron parte del muro. Los reportes coinciden con argumentos del presidente Donald Trump de que el muro que prometió en campaña sería necesario para detener el tráfico de personas y de drogas.

El Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego (SAN) tuvo 24 millones de pasajeros en el 2018, lo que es el récord más alto, y un incremento del casi 10 por ciento a comparación del año previo. De los 24 millones de pasajeros, más de un millón fueron viajeros internacionales, lo cual fue un incremento del 19 por ciento a comparación del 2017. Y también fue un nuevo récord para el aeropuerto. Además de una economía fuerte y una industria turística sólida, varios factores contribuyeron al aumento en el número de viajeros en el 2018 incluyendo un tercer vuelo diario hacia Vancouver por parte de Air Canada; el inicio de operaciones de un vuelo a Frankfurt por parte de Lufthansa; el cambio a un avión con mayor densidad por parte de la Aerolínea de Japón en un vuelo entre Estados Unidos y Tokyo desde este aeropuerto; Edelweiss que tuvo un aumento del 49 por ciento en pasajeros en su vuelo a Zurich en el 2018 a comparación del 2017; y la adición de un vuelo a Puerto Vallarta por parte de Southwest en el 2018 así como un incremento en los vuelos a Cabo. En total, se agregaron 16 nuevas

rutas en el 2018, y todas las aerolíneas en el aeropuerto, a excepción de dos, tuvieron un aumento en el número de pasajeros que viajaron desde el Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego. Southwest fue la aerolínea con el mayor incremento en el número de pasajeros con 794,401 viajeros más en el 2018 a comparación del 2017, seguido por Alaska Airlines que tuvo un aumento de 456,360 pasajeros, y United con 306,837. “Este es un momento tremendo de crecimiento no solo para el Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego sino para toda la región de San Diego”, dijo Kim Becker, presidente y CEO del Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego. “Con más personas eligiendo a San Diego como el destino de su elección, estamos mirando hacia el futuro en los proyectos que servirán para acomodar esta tendencia y proporcionar la experiencia de clase mundial que merecen nuestros clientes y comunidad en este aeropuerto”. El Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego está en camino de atender a más de 25 millones de pasajeros para el próximo año. Y para tener la capacidad para el reciente aumento y los incrementos proyectados, se está

realizando la fase de planeación de un nuevo Plan Maestro de Desarrollo del Aeropuerto (ADP, por sus siglas en inglés). La atracción principal del ADP es el reemplazo de la terminal 1 que tiene 51 años de antigüedad, con una terminal más eficiente, atractiva y moderna que mejore la experiencia del aeropuerto en su totalidad. Este año, el Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego junto con el Alcalde de San Diego, Kevin L. Faulconer y con agencias regionales lideradas por SANDAG,

se abordará el tema de largo plazo de forjar una mejor conexión de transporte público con el aeropuerto. El Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego fue fundado en 1928, y hoy es el aeropuerto con una sola pista más transitado de toda la nación. Cuenta con 51 puertas de embarque entre dos terminales. La terminal 1 se espera que sea renovada para el 2022, mientras que la terminal 2 fue la primera terminal de un aeropuerto en todo el mundo, en recibir un certificado de LEED Platino en el 2013.

La evolución de nuestras comunidades se debe a la gente que desde hace mucho ha estado impulsando cambios y luchado en varios frentes por estos. Luis Natividad es una de estas personas que ha buscado el cambio y luchado por el. A lo largo de los años, Natividad ha estado en en el frente activista y en el frente político para traer recursos a los barrios menos privilegiados. Pero a pesar de ser un líder comunitario por más de 50 años, en su juventud Natividad se vio involucrado en actividad pandillera. “Hace mucho nosotros los del barrio de National City siempre andábamos en pleito por territorios”, recordó Natividad. “Cuando estas joven y tienes energía hacías pendejadas como pelearte por haber cruzado la calle en cierta parte de la ciudad”. El rumbo que Natividad llevaba cambio cuando aprendió acerca del movimiento chicano y la lucha por la autodeterminación y empoderamiento de nuestras comunidades. “Un dia llego un señor de Los Ángeles para enseñarnos acerca del movimiento chicano”, dijo Natividad. “En esa plática mostraron que no había profesores latinos en las escuelas y las universidades, no hay policías latinos ni oficiales electos latinos”. Al darse cuenta de la falta de representación de personas con las mismas raíces que el, Natividad comenzó a ver mas cosas en su comunidad. El vio como los servicios que ya estaban presentes en la comunidad, como pavimentación y acceso a clínicas, aún no llegaban a los barrios como en donde él vivía. “Los que nos metimos al movimiento chicano eventualmente vimos que la única manera en la que nos darían acceso a esos recursos era uniéndonos y organizándonos para luchar por ellos”, Natividad afirmó. Poco después, Natividad se vio involucrado con la Asociación Política Mexicoamericana (MAPA, por sus siglas en inglés), en donde encontró una plataforma para tomar acción comunitaria y política. “Con MAPA comenzamos a trabajar en los barrios; comenzamos con los jóvenes para que ya no se metan en problemas. Luego nos pusimos a registrar a la raza para que voten y también comenzamos a pedir servicios para los barrios al oeste de la ciudad”. En 1969, impulsado por la comunidad de su barrio y MAPA, Natividad se lanzó como candidato a ser regidor de National City. “La raza era bien militante en ese entonces, andábamos marchando y criticando todo. El resto de la ciudad nos veía como agitadores así que fue una batalla cuesta arriba por cómo nos veían afuera del barrio”, contó Natividad.

Some nail biting took place in Mexico and in the United States this past weekend from fans of first-time Oscar nominated actress Yalitza Aparicio in the moments before the winner of the Best Actress category was named during the recent Oscar awards ceremony. While Aparicio, who plays domestic worker Cleo in the film “Roma,” did not win the award, that didn’t stop residents in her hometown of Tlaxiaco from celebrating the nomination. Olivia Colman won Best Actress for her role in “The Favourite.” Aparicio is only the second Mexican woman ever nominated for the Best Actress academy award, and the first indigenous woman to be nominated for the very coveted award. The historic nomination was met with racist comments online in Mexico, and even Sergio Goyri, a Mexican telenovela actor, was caught on video using a racial slur criticizing Aparicio’s nomination. Her nomination was a victory for indigenous communities in Mexico and the U.S. The achievement could open new doors for new generations, and potentially move forward conversations as Aparicio’s nomination brought issues of racism, and skin color along with stereotypes of how beauty is

defined, and anti-indigenous attitudes to the forefront. Alfonso Cuarón, the visionary behind the film “Roma,” was inspired by the housekeeper that helped raise him. Roma scored three Oscars and 10 nominations, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography. “I want to thank the Academy for recognizing a film centered around an indigenous woman, one of the 70 million domestic workers in the world without work rights. A character who has historically been relegated to the background in cinema. As artists, our job is to look where others don’t. This responsibility becomes much more important in times where we are being encouraged to look away,” Cuarón said during his acceptance speech after winning his third Oscar of the night for Best Director. En La Pequeña Haití “tenemos capacidad para 180 migrantes, o más en momentos de emergencia, cuartos limpios, baños con regaderas con agua caliente, una cocina comunitaria; todo muy bien organizado”, dijo el pastor. La construcción fue posible con donativos de grupos principalmente religiosos de Estados Unidos y México, y la siguiente fase es ampliar sin una fecha específica el refugio para apoyar a la comunidad migrante. La Pequeña Haití es uno de los albergues migrantes más alejados de las garitas actualmente, pero por lo mismo tiene mayor disponibilidad. Mientras que de la mayoría de los refugios, los migrantes pueden llegar al paso peatonal oeste, PedWest, en una caminata o con abordar un solo autobús urbano, desde La Pequeña Haití toma más tiempo y necesariamente al menos dos transportes. Pero el nuevo refugio abre ahora que la mayoría de los albergues migrantes en Tijuana reporta estar llenos, y luego de que el gobierno federal entrante en México suspendió

toda ayuda a organizaciones civiles, incluidas las de apoyo a migrantes. La comunidad haitiana comenzó a llegar a Tijuana en mayo del 2016 y por primera vez el gobierno de Estados Unidos impuso cuotas para migrantes que pasarán a solicitar asilo. Hasta noviembre del 2017 habrían entrado protegidos por el TPS que estaba vigente desde el 2010 entre 20 mil y 22 mil migrantes haitianos. Pero en diciembre del 2017 el gobierno de Estados Unidos canceló el TPS para haitianos bajo la declaración de que Haití ya no estaba en crisis por el terremoto del 2010. Cuando cerca de tres mil haitianos decidieron permanecer en Tijuana, el pastor Banda propuso crear La Pequeña Haití, que finalmente fue inaugurada entre hatianos, o haitijuanenses, y feligreses y vecinos del Cañón del Alacrán. Los más de 20 haitianos que entraron a Estados Unidos ahora enfrentan la cancelación del TPS por decreto del presidente Donald Trump. Según esa orden, tienen como plazo mediados del 2019 para salir de Estados Unidos.

Durante todo el pasado mes de febrero más de un centenar de oficiales de la policía comercial de Tijuana, tomaron este curso de capacitación, que consta de tres etapas: la primera en materia policial, legalidad, derechos humanos, mediación de conflictos y otros temas vinculados; la segunda se impartió en el IMAC, en donde se les conminó e indujo a convertirse en promotores culturales en el entorno de sus espacios y, la tercera y última etapa la tomaron en el Comité Ciudadano de Seguridad Pública Municipal, enfocada a que aprendieran con un enfoque ciudadano lo que se espera de un servidor público del sector. Se realizaron actividades en colaboración con la Dirección de Servicios de Protección Comercial y

vigilancia auxiliar de la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública Municipal de Tijuana (SSPM), en donde se incluyeron: charlas, talleres, recorridos guiados en algunas dependencias del IMAC, tales como: Casas de Cultura, Museo de Historia de Tijuana, Galería de la Ciudad, Archivo Histórico de Tijuana, en estos talleres se incluyeron actividades lúdicas. Realizar, hacer efectiva esta realidad es crear la posibilidad de enriquecer el acervo de este sector para beneficio de la propia sociedad tijuanense, así lo comentó Haydée Zavala Leyva, la titular de IMAC. Los resultados de este esfuerzo conjunto se reflejarán en corto plazo, porque conociendo la aplicación de la cultura en la prevención del delito, facilitará el desempeño de este importante sector Un total de 106 oficiales, hombres y mujeres fueron los que se capacitaron al participar en este curso de capacitación, lo comentó Hugo Díaz Rodríguez, titular de la Dirección de Servicios de Protección Comercial y Vigilancia auxiliar de la SSPM.

Inmigrantes haitianos, migrantes centroamericanos y refugiados que han comenzado a llegar de Venezuela celebraron con birria y tortillas calientes la inauguración del refugio la Pequeña Haití, Casa de Dios, en un barrio pobre de periferia de Tijuana. El pastor Gustavo Banda Aceves, de la Iglesia de los Embajadores de Jesús, fundador de La Pequeña Haití, dijo que el buen Dios “nos permitió abrir el refugio en muy buen momento, cuando están por llegar miles de migrantes a Tijuana a buscar asilo”. “Están llegando gente retornada de Estados Unidos, migrantes mexicanos desplazados, chilenos, venezolanos, haitianos desde Brasil, y los centroamericanos: hondureños, salvadoreños, guatemaltecos y nicaragüenses”, dijo el pastor. Por la pequeña comunidad haitiana o “haitijuanense” en El Cañón del Alacrán han pasado en las últimas semanas “unos 500 venezolanos que van a pedir asilo en San Diego”, dijo el pastor. Están unos días y continúan pero 40 haitianos que vivían en Venezuela hasta hace unas semanas se han quedado en la comunidad. Las familias permanecen en el interior de la amplia iglesia en casas de campaña familiares como lo hacen desde el 2016, cuando más de 23 mil haitianos llegaron a Tijuana con intención de cruzar a pedir refugio en Estados Unidos, que para entonces les otorgaba protección temporal contra deportaciones o TPS. SANDAG Aprueba Nueva Visión de Transporte La mesa directiva de SANDAG aprobó de manera unánime un plan de acción para desarrollar una visión de transporte transformadora para la región de San Diego que sea eficiente, equitativa socialmente, y sustentable para el medio ambiente. “Las necesidades de nuestra región merecen una visión grande para nuestro sistema de transporte”, dijo el presidente de la mesa directiva de SANDAG y alcalde de Poway, Steve Vaus. “Mientras que hay riesgos al extender nuestro plan regional de desarrollo, nosotros creemos que este es el mejor camino para un plan transformativo real que cumpla con las metas de nuestra región”. El plan de acción llama a crear un sistema de transporte que considere tecnologías innovadoras para llevar a las personas a donde tienen que ir, de la manera más rápida y al mismo tiempo cumpliendo con las metas de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. “Con el desarrollo de esta visión de una manera más amplia y audaz para el futuro de nuestra región, no estamos esforzando en no solo cumplir, sino también en superar los objetivos climáticos del gobierno del estado”, dijo el director ejecutivo de SANDAG, Hasan Ikharata. “El plan de acción

que la mesa directiva aprobó exige un sistema de transporte rápido y seguro con alternativas reales que sean tan buenas, si no mejores, que el conducir”. La mesa directiva de la Asociación de Gobiernos del Condado de San Diego (SANDAG, por sus siglas en inglés) habló sobre los esfuerzos legislativos y de procedimiento para mitigar los riesgos de extender el plan regional, que originalmente estaba programado para ser adoptado en otoño del 2019. SANDAG continuará trabajando con los socios estatales y federales para mantener el cumplimiento y proteger el financiamiento vital que fue asegurado por SANDAG. Mientras la agencia trabaja para desarrollar esta visión transformadora, SANDAG continuará trabajando en proyectos y programas que ya están en marcha a lo largo de la región de San Diego. Entre los años 40 y 60 se difundió por la radio el programa matutino “La Tremenda Corte”. En él, un astuto y pícaro personaje, llamado Tres Patines, ponía contra la pared, con sus ocurrencias y enredos, al Juez de la corte. Era una forma de entretener a los habitantes de la Isla de Cuba, pero fue adoptado cariñosamente por los mexicanos. En la actualidad, y con las reservas del caso, nos enfrentamos a un fenómeno comunicacional similar. En las mañanas otro singular actor 4T, se hace de los microfonos nacionales para inundar, con mil y un enredos, epítetos, secuencias desordenadas e improvisadas, a un público, que ha diferencia del formato de la “Tremenda Corte” en este caso “La tremenda Tribuna”, no genera mayor diversión, cada día tiene menos seguidores y el formato se desgasta a velocidad inusitada sin percatarse de ello el productor y conductor. En casi 100 días, tiempo de la evaluación tradicional de los nuevos estilos de dirigir, la administración se asume como opción de reconstrucción, pero solo atina a la destrucción sistemática del andamiaje institucional heredado. No queda títere con cabeza de ex funcionarios a los que se tacha, con y sin razón, de todos los males habidos pero se les protege al mismo tiempo con el manto de la impunidad. Pero, por otro lado, no se observa claridad en el diseño de nuevas políticas públicas, sólo destacan acciones aisladas, poco razonadas, impulsadas con fórmulas nada sutiles que rayan en el populismo desbordado. Los pronósticos económicos se deterioran por ausencia de inversión privada que prefiere contraerse hasta que se encuentre más diáfano el escenario político. El gasto público no se canaliza a proyectos productivos y los programas sociales se cancelan sin mayor explicación, dejando desamparados a millones de beneficiarios para privilegiar a seguidores incondicionales. La propuesta para crear una Guardia Nacional ha logrado apoyo temporal de las fuerzas políticas, pero tomará tiempo para que pueda rendir frutos. La escalada de inseguridad seguirán azotando a la población que se encuentra inerme ante la ferocidad de la delincuencia. El tráfico de drogas y el hurto de bienes nacionales no se abaten, y nuevas formas de organización delictiva se desarrollan ante un sistema judicial obsoleto y corrupto. Las tensiones internacionales son barruntos de tempestades que se aproximan inexorablemente. El calendario político se verá reflejado en los discursos que tomarán los temas de las fronteras como campo de batalla afectando ese espacio territorial de por sí ya en situación alarmante. De ahí que sea una exigencia impostergable que la nueva administración se abstenga de seguir jugando a scripts de comedia matutina, y de manera seria y profesional se apreste a crear un verdadero proyecto de desarrollo nacional. Y si no, que el Juez ¡dicte la sentencia…!

Si de gastar dinero se tratara, los Padres de San Diego deberían ser considerados los campeones de las Grandes Ligas. En los últimos dos años, la escuadra sandieguina ha realizado los dos fichajes más caros en el mercado de agentes libres. El año pasado, los Padres firmaron a Eric Hosmer tras otorgarle un contrato de de 114 millones de dólares

por siete temporadas. La semana pasada, el equipo de San Diego formalizó la oferta de 300 millones de dólares por 10 campanas a Manny Machado. “Siempre estamos dispuestos a reforzar nuestro club”, dijo el gerente general de los Padres, A.J. Preller. “Queremos estar en lo alto de las posiciones, tenemos mucho trabajo que hacer en ese aspecto pero creo que hemos dado los pasos correctos para poder alcanzar nuestros objetivos”,

comentó el directivo. Ciertamente, la llegada de Machado a San Diego respalda con hechos las palabras del gerente general del club. “La visión a futuro que tienen la organización es lo que lo que me convenció para firmar con los Padres”, dijo Machado. “Llegó a una gran ciudad que tienen uno de los parques de pelota más bellos de las Grandes Ligas y unos fanáticos increíbles. El equipo tienen jóvenes peloteros de gran calidad y

una directiva convencida de ejecutar un plan que nos lleve al éxito”, explicó. A sus 26 años de edad, Machado dijo sentirse en la mejor forma de su carrera profesional. “He aprendido y madurado mucho en todos los sentidos”, dijo el pelotero dominicano que suma seis temporadas de experiencia en Grandes Ligas. “Llego a San Diego de la mejor manera posible, física y emocionalmente estoy en un gran momento”, apuntó.

En una abrir y cerrar de ojos, los Xolos de Tijuana pasaron de ser un equipo sin alma a un conjunto lleno de vida. Con su triunfo de la jornada pasada en el estadio del Necaxa, la escuadra fronteriza se colocó en zona de Liguilla. En sus últimos tres

partidos, los Xolos han ladrado fuerte al cosechar dos triunfos y un empate. El paso que lleva el cuadro de Tijuana ya lo tiene en el sexto puesto de la clasificación general al sumar 13 puntos. El viernes, en la cancha del Estadio Caliente, los Xolos tratarán de reivindicar el buen momento que viven en su duelo contra los

Rojinegros del Atlas. Un triunfo en el encuentro correspondiente a la octava jornada del Torneo Clausura 2019 significaría para los Xolos un paso muy importante en su carrera por llegar a la siguiente fase de la competencia. El equipo de Tijuana encontrará en su próximo rival a un equipo desesperado por volver a la senda del

triunfo. En sus últimos tres encuentros, el Atlas ha cosechado tres derrotas en los que se ha sufrido seis goles en contra a cambio de uno solo favor. El panorama es aún más negro para el cuadro tapatío si se toma en cuenta el expediente histórico de sus visitas al césped sintético del Estadio Agua Caliente.

En ocho presentaciones en Tijuana, el Atlas ha ganado una vez y se ha llevado cuatro derrotas y tres empates. El único triunfo del equipo tapatío en casa de los Xolos se dio en el Torneo Clausura 2015. El Atlas llega a su encuentro ante Xolos instalado en décimo lugar de la tabla general con 10 puntos sumados.

Si es cierto lo que algunos sociólogos dicen en el sentido de que el futbol es reflejo de la sociedad, entonces veo a un México muy apremiado. No es que quiera poner sal en la herida de un país que entre la corrupción, la violencia y la impunidad se está desmoronando, pero es difícil resistirse a hacer el apunte con base en una observación. Los torneos de Liga y de Copa que disputan los grandes planteles del balompié mexicano suponen ser las competencias que generan grandes emociones entre los aficionados. Las gradas atiborradas con fanáticos que agitan banderas, entonan porras y lanzan cánticos que incitan a la acción, debería ser la fotografía en cada uno de los escenarios de una liga que presume ser una de las 10 más importantes del mundo. En un país donde el futbol representa para mucha gente su única válvula de escape para deshacerse de sus presiones, de sus tristezas, de sus congojas, es difícil creer lo que está pasando. En el actual Torneo Clausura 2019, la mayor parte de los estadios han estado ocupados a la mitad de su capacidad y en muchas ocasiones se registran entradas que dan pena. Equipos tan poderosos y de tanta convocatoria como Cruz Azul y América han tenido partidos en los que no superan los 15 mil boletos vendidos en sus partidos dentro del Estadio Azteca. Afición y pasión por el futbol existe en México, por lo que la ausencia de público se la atribuyó directamente a los graves y complejos problemas que enfrenta el país. La arista de una economía que no crece y que ofrece calamitosos salarios es seguramente un componente importante en la ausencia de aficionados. Es muy comprensible que en lugar de comprar un boleto para el futbol, el padre de familia destine ese dinero a artículos esenciales para el hogar. Es de entender que el obrero piensa más en el pan de mañana que en las Chivas, los Pumas o los Xolos. La inseguridad que reina en gran parte de las ciudades donde se desarrollan los partidos es otro de los aspectos por el que la gente pone freno a su intención de salir de casa. El miedo, zozobra y angustia se ha apoderado de aquellos que solían hacer de los estadios de futbol su segundo hogar. No es casualidad que los partidos de la Liga MX se estén jugando con menos cantidad de aficionados que en épocas anteriores. La ausencia de público debe ser tomada como una seria llamada de atención por la clase política mexicana que cree que todo marcha sobre ruedas. El que no haya gente en los estadios significa que el país está mal, que la gente esta está deprimida por falta de dinero y temerosa por falta de garantías individuales. Es triste aceptarlo, pero el futbol es sin duda el reflejo de un país que no encuentra el camino hacia la paz y la prosperidad.

SUSPENDIDO DE NUEVO El ala defensiva de los Vaqueros de Dallas, Randy Gregory, fue suspendido indefinidamente por violar la política de abuso de sustancias prohibidas por la liga y, de igual manera, los términos de su reincorporación condicional. Esta es la cuarta suspensión de Gregory desde que fue seleccionado por Dallas en la segunda ronda del Draft 2015 de la NFL. Gregory fue absuelto y reincorporado en julio de 2018 luego de una suspensión de un año en 2017. También fue suspendido dos veces por 14 juegos en total en 2016 por violar la política de abuso de sustancias de la liga. El jugador de 26 años estaba entrando en el último año de su contrato de novato. En su primera temporada completa como profesional en 2018, Gregory jugó en 14 juegos, registrando seis capturas y 25 tacleadas. En cuatro años en la liga, Gregory ha sido suspendido por 30 juegos, más de los que ha jugado. SANDAG will continue to work with state and federal partners to maintain compliance and protect the vital funding that SANDAG has worked so hard to secure. While the agency works to develop this transformative vision, SANDAG will continue to work on projects and programs underway throughout the San Diego region. The action plan approved by the Board builds on prior Regional Plan development efforts conducted in 2018. The new vision and the transportation network to make it a reality will be developed through an extensive public process in 2019, followed by approximately one year of technical modeling work, and about one year for environmental review. Public input over the past year created the foundation for this new vision and will continue to inform the SANDAG Board’s decision making. In the coming months, there will be many opportunities to provide input on the development of this visionary plan. Community input is critical to creating a plan that reflects the varied values, needs, and interests of the San Diego region’s residents and businesses. The SANDAG board is anticipated to adopt the Regional Plan in late 2021.

officers and elected officials.” After seeing the lack of representation of people from his same background, Natividad began to see more things that were amiss in his community. He saw how the services that were already present in other neighborhoods, such as paving and access to clinics, had not yet reached his community. “Those of us in the Chicano movement eventually saw that the only way we could access resources was through unity and organizing,” Natividad said. Soon after becoming involved in activism, Natividad became involved with the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA), where he found a platform to take community and political action. “With MAPA we started working in the neighborhood; starting with keeping young people out of trouble. Then we went moved on to registering raza to vote and asking for services in city neighborhoods.” In 1969, boosted by members of his neighborhood and MAPA, Natividad ran for a position as a Member of National City’s City Council. “Raza was quite militant at the time, the we were marching and criticizing everything. The rest of the city saw us as agitators so it was an uphill battle,” said Natividad. Despite the perception that National City voters had about him, Natividad and his team went out to the community to meet constituents door

A Mexican almost won a local post, which was something unheard of in the 60s”. Not minding the narrow loss, Natividad kept his course as a leader. He helped community members to reorganize to help those with drug problems and was elected as director of the Chicano Federation, post which he held for three years. After leaving the Chicano Federation, Natividad worked in various community organizations. Some of the nonprofits Natividad has been involved with are the Jacobs Family Foundation, the Community Action Council, the Binational Health Council Emergency Medical Committee, Community Advisory Committee on Gang, Alcohol, and Substance Use Prevention for Sweetwater Union High School District, the Latino/Latina Indigenous Peoples Unity Coalition, Operation Warm Foundation Heart, the San Diego Mariachi Festival, and the San Diego Food Bank as a founding member. In the political stage, Natividad was a member of former County Supervisor Jim Bates’ staff and has been involved in the South County Economic Development Council and their board, the National City Traffic and Safety Commission, and the United States Census Bureau. A pesar del descalabro en las urnas, Natividad siguió su curso de ser un líder comunitario. “Nosotros seguimos en lo nuestro a pesar de haber perdido. Nos reorganizamos para ayudar a quienes tenían problemas con las drogas por todos lados. De hecho después de la campaña fui elegido como director de Chicano Federation, cargo que tuve por tres años”. Tras dejar la dirección de Chicano Federation, Natividad trabajo dentro de varias organizaciones comunitarias. Entre estos organismos se encuentran la Fundación Jacobs Family, el Consejo de Acción Comunitaria, el Consejo de Salud Binacional, el Comité Ciudadano de Prevención de Pandillas y Abuso de Substancias del distrito Sweetwater Union, la Coalición de Unión de Pueblos Latinos e Indígenas, Operation Warm Heart, el Festival del Mariachi, y el Banco de Comida de San Diego como miembro fundador. One day in April of that year, heavy construction machinery arrived at the site where a community park was to be built in Logan Heights. Mario Solis, a college student, noticed the construction equipment and alerted the community and fellow students. The community’s response was immediate. These events led to the take over of what today is now Chicano Park. “The most beautiful thing about the park takeover is that for the first time all of the raza from of all neighborhoods came together for a cause. For the first time, regardless of what hood or what city you lived in, all raza was able to unite. Is a very beautiful memory,” Natividad said. With that memory in mind, Natividad looks to send a message of unity to the community. “We now live in an era where everything we have done as raza, be it as Chicanos, as Mexicans, or as Latinos, has seen setbacks,” says Natividad. “I know it will be impossible for everyone to think the exact same way, but we all want the same things for our communities and our families. If we can all come together once more, we can continue to improve our communities again,” Natividad closed.

2002 ganó sus contiendas electorales para ser regidor de National City. A pesar de la labor que ha efectuado a lo largo de los años, Natividad tiene gratos recuerdos de un evento ocurrido en 1970. Un dia de abril de ese año, llegó maquinaria pesada para realizar obras de construcción para una estación de la patrulla de caminos en el terreno designado para un parque comunitario en Barrio Logan. Mario Solis, un estudiante universitario, se percató de la llegada de la maquinaria y alertó a la comunidad y a más estudiantes. La respuesta de la comunidad fue inmediata. Estos eventos llevaron a la toma de lo que hoy en dia es el Parque Chicano. “Lo más hermoso de la toma del parque es que por primera vez toda la raza de todos los barrios se juntó por una misma causa. Por primera vez mire que sin importar de qué barrio eras o en que ciudad vivas, toda nuestra raza se podía unir. Es un recuerdo muy bonito”, afirma Natividad. Es con esa memoria que Natividad busca emitir un mensaje de unión a la comunidad. “A mi parecer, ahorita vivimos en una época en donde todo lo que hemos hecho como raza, seamos chicanos, mexicanos, o latinos, ha visto retrasos”, afirma Natividad. “Se que va ser imposible que todos pensemos igual, pero todos queremos las mismas cosas para nuestras comunidades y nuestras familias. Si nos volvemos a juntar podemos volver a mejorar nuestras comunidades”, concluyó Natividad.

Como parte del MOU, el Ayuntamiento solicitará la inclusión de las Fuerzas Armadas como uno de los más de 20 socios en el consorcio de la región de San Diego para este programa piloto. MCICOM ha establecido a un representante en San Diego centrado en la innovación en las instalaciones de la Costa Oeste, incluidas las dos instalaciones en la estación aérea de las Fuerzas Armadas en Miramar y en la estación de reclutas de las Fuerzas Armadas en San Diego. El concepto de la instalación neXt reúne el poder de las ideas y los socios de la comunidad para imaginar y volver a imaginar la aplicación de tecnologías, procesos y adaptaciones organizacionales de vanguardia emergentes para el futuro de las bases de las Fuerzas Armadas. Nombrada como una de las mejores ciudades inteligentes de todo el mundo por parte de National Geographic en 2015, la Ciudad de San Diego ha implementado varias tecnologías avanzadas para mejorar las operaciones de la ciudad, el servicio al cliente, y la seguridad pública desde que el alcalde Faulconer tomó su puesto. Los ejemplos incluyen farolas inteligentes y la aplicación de “get it done”.
