alifornia Governor Gavin Newsom delivered his first State of the State speech this week, immediately challenging President Donald Trump’s positions on immigration.

“Let’s start with the fear mongering from the White House about the so-called ‘emergency’ at our border,” Newsom said as he began his remarks.

The new governor said President Trump’s stances on immigration were an echo from 15 years ago when he was the new mayor of San Francisco, and former President George W. Bush said during his State of the Union speech that LGBT Americans should not be able to get married.

Newsom said he believed the remarks were an attack on friends and neighbors, and California’s values.

“Last week we heard another president stand up at the State of the Union and offer a vision of America

While the start of the work week might be lethargic for many, Nancy Maldonado, the new CEO of local nonprofit Chicano Federation, wastes no time on Monday mornings. Prior to speaking with La Prensa San Diego, she met with a planning council which informs and advises the County on how to best deliver child care services and resources to families.

“Every year the County does a needs assessment to look at where the most needs are in childcare. So with an interest in childcare from the new governor, we want to determine what would be the best use for possible resources? Where would they best be invested?” she explained. “You also have to realize that just money is not going to solve the problem with providing childcare because there are not enough program spaces, so we have to see how do we increase the capacity for increased child care.”

“So yes, pretty busy working on a couple of issues,” she added smiling.

Joining the Chicano Federation in 2017 as a program director, Maldonado’s talent and leadership was quickly noted within the organization, leading to a promotion to the chief PROFILE ON PAGE 7

l gobernador de California Gavin Newsom anunció el retiro de la mayoría de los soldados de la Guardia Nacional de California que habían sido desplegados en los límites con Baja California, porque, dijo, fueron enviados a la frontera para responder a “una crisis manufacturada por la Casa Blanca”.

“Este es el teatro del absurdo y California ya ha tenido suficiente”, declaró categórico el gobernador en conferencia de prensa en vivo.

Los soldados serán retirados al final de marzo, cuando concluya un acuerdo con el gobierno federal, pro el que el exgobernador Jerry Brown accedió con condiciones al envío de efectivos a la frontera.

Newsom dijo que California mantendrá en la zona fronteriza un centenar de soldados estatales, principalmente en las garitas, para apoyar la búsqueda de contrabando y drogas hacia California y de armas de fuego hacia a México.

Los 260 soldados que serán retirados de la frontera se

reincorporan a preparativos ante la siguiente temporada de incendios –que inicia en marzo-- y en la “búsqueda de cultivos ilegales de mariguana” ahora que el consumo de mariguana es legal en California pero se tiene que apegar a la ley.

Newsom recordó que hace apenas unos días el presidente Donald Trump ordenó el despliegue de 3,750 soldados adicionales a la frontera con México.

Cuestionó que “¿si van a desplegar 3,750 soldados más, para qué quieren también a la Guardia Nacional?”.

El mayor general David Baldwin, comandante de la Guardia Nacional de California, reiteró que los cien soldados que permanezcan en la frontera tienen prohibido participar en acciones contra migrantes.

“Ellos pueden monitorear y si descubren que alguien cruza la frontera entre garitas, lo informan, porque eso es ilegal, incluso si lo hacen ciudadanos estadunidenses”, aclaró el comandante.

El gobernador Newsom, quien asumió el cargo el pasado primero de enero, dijo que nadie debe de sorprenderse por este tipo de

decisiones de su parte, porque en campaña fue bastante claro en sus políticas.

La semana pasada, luego de que falló en conseguir fondos para construir el muro fronterizo con el mayor cierre de gobierno en la historia, el presidente Trump ordenó enviar más soldados a la frontera y declaró que en tanto no se construya el muro que prometió en campaña, los soldados

formarían un muro alternativo.

En apenas la sexta semana de gobierno, esta es la tercera ocasión en que el gobernador contraviene políticas y decisiones del presidente Trump.

Newsom ha anunciado el primer plan de salud universal en el país y reveló en San Diego un plan para invertir 25 millones de dólares en apoyo a organizaciones que ayudan a los migrantes que buscan asilo.

Transportation Justice Sought for Low-Income Commuters

It’s hard to believe, but it is true, workers in San Diego spend an incredible amount of time getting to work.

For Luis Robledesco, it takes two and half hours to get to his job and another two and a half hours to get home. His journey begins early in the dark before the sun rises, crossing the border from Tijuana to San Ysidro where he boards the trolley and then transfers to a bus to head out to east Chula Vista.

Robledesco says he doesn’t even want to talk about what he goes through to get from his house in Tijuana to the border. It’s a journey he’s done for the past ten years.

Robledesco said he’s always been on time with a few exceptions when the trolley broke down.

“You can’t do anything, just wait until it moves or they stop at the nearest trolley station let everybody off and wait for another one,” Robledesco said.

For Ana Jimenez, a single mother of two children, it’s a somewhat similar experience. It can take Jimenez two hours or more to get to her job at a restaurant in La Jolla from Linda Vista.

Jimenez said in the past on the weekends when buses run less often, she has been stranded after missing the last bus for the night, and this can happen when she is very tired after working eight hours

plus overtime.

“Those are the worst times because I have to call distant relatives late at night, wake them up and hope they will come pick me up. I also don’t like it because my kids are left alone for so long,” Jimenez said.

Jimenez said even though she earns a little over minimum wage, with all her bills saving for a car is still impossible.

Jimenez and Robledesco form part of a statistic which says 70 percent of jobs are unreachable by public transit within 90 minutes in the MTS service area, according to an analysis from the Brookings Institution of data from 371 transit providers in the nation’s 100 largest

metropolitan areas.

The long commutes are on the minds of several community organizations looking to push for a 2020 MTS ballot measure where transportation equity is at the forefront.

The Environmental Health Coalition, the City Heights Community Development Corporation, the Center on Policy Initiatives, Mid-City Community Advocacy Network, and San Diego 350 are listed as supporters of a ballot measure on a fact sheet which states the coalition envisions an initiative which would improve connecting people to jobs, make the TRANSPORTATION ON PAGE 8

Este martes 12 de febrero, por iniciativa de la organización internacional sin fines de lucro GO Campaign, ese presentaron en Tijuana 50 líderes sociales provenientes de Los Ángeles con el fin de generar acciones conjuntas y conocer de cerca la labor de dos héroes locales que trabajan para ayudar a migrantes, refugiados y víctimas de trata.

El grupo visitante, en cual participaron filántropos, donantes, directivos y ejecutivos de Hollywood, busca sumarse para proveer soluciones a necesidades específicas entre los migrantes que han llegado a la frontera de Tijuana.

GO Campaign trabaja para que sus colaboradores conozcan de cerca y comprendan la importancia de que la población infantil que viaja en estas caravanas no pierda su derecho a la educación, a la atención médica, a un refugio digno y a tener acceso a alimentos y agua potable, es decir, a la oportunidad de una vida digna. Esta labor ha sido prioritaria para GO Campaign desde 2006 cuando inició su asociación con unos 138 héroes locales, logrando cambiar la vida de unos 126,000 niños en 34 países, desde el Este de África hasta el Este de Los Ángeles en Estados Unidos.

En esta visita a Tijuana destaca la participación de Ewan McGregor, Robert Pattinson y Lily Collins como Embajadores de GO Campaign, asociados con dos héroes locales que han enfocado importantes acciones en Tijuana, el abogado Mark Lane y la licenciada Alma Tucker.

Guns, Opioids, Mental Health More Urgent than Wall

O

ur nation has serious crises that lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of people each year.

Innocent people are dying and we’re not doing enough to help prevent those deaths.

30,000 killed each year by guns.

45,000 die by suicide. 72,000 overdose on opioids.

Americans are dying in increasing numbers each year yet there is no presidential declaration of an emergency in any of those cases.

During last week’s State of the Union address, President Donald Trump instead focused his attention on fighting illegal immigration with his long-promised border wall, falsely claiming that tens of thousands of Americans have died at the hands of undocumented immigrants.

For weeks, Trump has decried a national emergency at the border, and has alarmed people by claiming that 63,000 Americans have been killed by undocumented immigrants since the September 11th terrorist attacking in 2001.

That dubious claim has been debunked by various groups that study homicide statistics but that clearly doesn’t stop the President from repeating it. There is no

evidence of any such number of deaths attributed to undocumented immigrants.

The best estimate of such crimes comes from a Cato Institute study released last year that reviewed homicides in Texas in 2015. Of 951 convictions, 93% were committed by US-born assailants, 1.6% were committed by legal immigrants, and 5.3%, or 51, were committed by people in the country illegally.

Yes, that’s 51 too many, but we must look at them in context.

During the same period, 3,776 people died by suicide in Texas, 3,356 people died from gun related deaths, and 2,979 people overdosed. Where’s the outcry about those deaths.

When compared to homicides by undocumented immigrants, Texans were 74 times more likely to die from a gunshot, 65 times more likely to commit suicide, or 58 times more likely to overdose than to be killed by someone in the country illegally.

And of those people in the country illegally, most arrived legally on visas or passports and simply overstayed their legal visit, not by running across an unprotected border, so a border wall or fence would not have stopped them anyway.

Illegal border crossings at near historic lows. Since 1971, we have had

more than 15 years with more illegal crossings that this past year.

So what’s the crisis at the border?

The “crisis” is manmade, engineered by Trump to create a powerful political issue. It’s true that caravans of migrants have and continue to make their way toward our border, but that’s been happening for years. And when they arrive, some seek asylum through the legal process, some return home, and some do attempt to cross the border illegally.

But that’s not a crisis, it’s reality of living on the border with the world’s wealthiest country aligned next to a still developing nation.

We have border walls, fences, double fences, barbed wire, and over 20,000 Border Patrol agents on the border now, along with military personal deployed by Trump last year.

No doubt, there are issues at the border that can be addressed with more physical barriers, technology, and personnel, but a national emergency it is not. And spending $5 billion and up to $30 billion on a wall, or barrier, or fence, is not the answer.

Immigration, both legal and illegal, must be dealt with in a comprehensive way that will allow families to stay intact, allow young adults and

children brought here as minor to have a sensible path to citizenship, and allow employers to continue providing good paying jobs to hard working immigrants that want to achieve their own American dream.

That’s real immigration reform.

We should also be unified in attacking the causes of gun violence that kill thousands each year, including children.

We should be addressing the mental health issues that lead thousands each year to take their own lives, including military veterans returning from service.

We should be fighting the epidemic of prescription drug overdoses that is claiming the lives of fathers, mothers, and children that have gotten hooked on drugs that were intended to help heal, not kill.

If President Trump is truly serious about protecting Americans, and he’s willing to shut down the government to get his way, he should be boldly leading us toward an America where we are safe from gun violence, protected from dangerous drugs, and healthy enough to want to live our lives, not take them ourselves.

That would make American great again.

A border fence? No, thanks, we already have that.

FDA Takes Action Against False ‘Alzheimer’s Cure’ Manufacturers LA PRENSA SAN DIEGO NEWSDESK

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today posted 12 warning letters and 5 online advisory letters issued to foreign and domestic companies that are illegally selling more than 58 products, many that are sold as dietary supplements, which are unapproved new drugs and/or misbranded drugs that claim to prevent, treat or cure Alzheimer’s disease and a number of other serious diseases and health conditions. These products, which are often sold on websites and social media platforms, have not been reviewed by the FDA and are not proven safe and effective to treat the diseases and health conditions they claim to treat. These products may be ineffective, unsafe and could prevent a person from seeking an appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

“Science and evidence are the cornerstone of the FDA’s review process and are imperative to demonstrating medical benefit, especially when a product is marketed to treat serious and complex diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s is a challenging disease that, unfortunately, has no cure. Any products making unproven drug claims could mislead consumers to believe that such therapies exist and keep them from accessing therapies

that are known to help support the symptoms of the disease, or worse as some fraudulent treatments can cause serious or even fatal injuries.

Simply put, health fraud scams prey on vulnerable populations, waste money and often delay proper medical care – and we will continue to take action to protect patients and caregivers from misleading, unproven products,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. “Today’s actions are part of the FDA’s larger effort to address the booming growth of the dietary supplement industry through the implementation of modern regulatory initiatives that will enable the agency to preserve the balanced vision of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), enacted by Congress 25 years ago.

That law sought to achieve the right balance between preserving consumers’ access to lawful supplements, promoting innovation in these products, while upholding our obligation to protect the public from unsafe and unlawful products and holding accountable those actors who are unable or unwilling to comply with the requirements of the law. Our newest policy efforts will seize the game-changing opportunity to further strengthen the regulatory framework overseeing dietary supplements and will hone in on important steps to both promote

industry innovation while upholding the safety of these products as part of our overall commitment to protecting public health,” Gottlieb added In a statement issued today, FDA Commissioner Gottlieb also outlined several important new actions and policy priorities the agency will take in the coming months to improve the safety of dietary supplements and purported dietary supplements, including efforts to more rapidly communicate potential safety issues with dietary supplement products with the public, establishing a flexible regulatory framework that promotes innovation and upholds product safety and other, new steps the FDA could consider taking to better ensure product safety and integrity.

The products cited in the warning and online advisory letters posted today are unapproved new drugs and/or misbranded drugs that claim to prevent, treat or cure Alzheimer’s disease and a number of other serious diseases and health conditions, and have been sold in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The products include a variety of product types, such as tablets, capsules and oils. The companies have been asked to respond to the FDA within 15 days of receipt of the letters, stating how the violations outlined in the agency’s

letters will be corrected. Failure to correct the violations promptly may result in legal action, including product seizure and/or injunction.

As part of the FDA’s effort to protect consumers from Alzheimer’s disease health fraud, the FDA has issued more than 40 warning letters in the past five years to companies illegally marketing over 80 products making Alzheimer’s disease claims on websites, social media and in stores. We’ve also taken action in recent years against companies and dietary supplements making similar claims for the treatment of serious conditions such as cancer and opioid addiction.

Although these companies may have stopped selling the products or making unproven claims, numerous unsafe and unapproved products continue to be sold directly to consumers due in part to the ease with which companies can move their marketing operations to new websites.

The FDA continues to encourage consumers to remain vigilant whether online or in a store in order to avoid purchasing products that claim to prevent, treat or cure diseases without any proof they will work. Health care professionals and consumers are also advised to report adverse reactions associated with these or similar products to the agency’s MedWatch program.

Declaran culpable a responsable de Accidente en Parque Chicano POR ALEXANDRA MENDOZA

Un jurado encontró culpable de homicidio vehicular y conducir bajo la influencia a un suboficial de la Marina que en octubre de 2016 causó un accidente en el Parque Chicano en el que fallecieron cuatro personas y siete más resultaron heridas.

Richard Anthony Sepolio, de 27 años, escuchó el veredicto por parte del juez Charles G. Rogers, y ahora esperará su sentencia a principios de abril que podría ir desde libertad condicional hasta 18 años en prisión.

El jurado, conformado por seis hombres y seis mujeres, no encontró responsabilidad en cuatro cargos por

negligencia grave, y uno más por conducir por encima del límite legal de alcohol por lo que Sepolio será enjuiciado por negligencia ordinaria.

Sin embargo, se determinó responsabilidad por conducir bajo la influencia del alcohol ocasionando heridas en múltiples víctimas.

Durante el juicio que se extendió por cinco semanas, se reveló que Sepolio estuvo tomando bebidas alcohólicas ese día y más tarde, discutió por teléfono con su novia mientras ingresó al puente Coronado a exceso de velocidad.

Cuando intentó pasar a otro vehículo perdió el control de la camioneta pickup que conducía a 80 millas por hora, por lo que cayó a

una altura de 60 pies hacia el Parque Chicano en donde se llevaba a cabo un evento de motocicletas al que asistían miles de asistentes.

En el accidente fallecieron Cruz Contreras de 52 años y su esposa Annamarie de 50 años, al igual que Francine Jiménez de 46 años y su esposo, Andre Banks de 49 años. En su memoria, vecinos colocaron un altar con sus nombres en el histórico parque del Barrio Logan, el cual sigue en su lugar desde la trágica fecha.

Sepolio, quien no mostró reacción al escuchar el veredicto durante la audiencia, quedó en custodia de autoridades luego de que el juez le revocó la fianza. Su abogado, Paul

Pfingst, indicó a medios de comunicación que su cliente mandó un mensaje a su familia: “permanezcan fuertes”.

Cally Bright, fiscal asignada al caso, comentó que si bien “nada regresará a las familias que fallecieron”, el juez tomará varios factores al momento de dictar condena.

“En cuanto a su castigo (Sepolio) por las acciones de ese día, la velocidad en la que conducía, su testimonio y cómo lo hizo, serán cosas que el juez considerará”, declaró a medios a las afueras de la corte.

l gobernador de California, Gavin Newsom, pronunció su primer discurso sobre el estado del estado esta semana, desafiando de inmediato las posiciones del presidente Donald Trump sobre la inmigración.

"Comencemos con el temor de la Casa Blanca por la llamada ‘emergencia’ en nuestra frontera", dijo Newsom al comenzar sus comentarios.

El nuevo gobernador dijo que las posturas del presidente Trump sobre la inmigración eran un eco de hace 15 años cuando era el nuevo alcalde de San Francisco, y el ex presidente George W. Bush dijo durante su discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión que los estadounidenses LGBT no deberían poder casarse. Newsom dijo que creía que los comentarios eran un ataque a amigos y vecinos, y los valores de California.

“La semana pasada escuchamos a otro presidente ponerse de pie en el Estado de la Unión y ofrecer una

" La seguridad fronteriza y la inmigración fueron solo algunos de los diferentes temas que Newsom discutió durante su discurso.

EEUU Acelerará Reemplazo de Muro Fronterizo en SD POR MANUEL OCAÑO

En gobierno de Estados Unidos anunció que acelerará sin limitarse por leyes ambientales el reemplazo de muro en la frontera de San Diego con Tijuana.

La secretaria Kirstjen Nielsen, informó que el Departamento de Seguridad Interior (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) recurrirá a un permiso para ignorar disposiciones ambientales, para construir rápidamente el muro de poco más de 14 millas, entre las aguas del Pacífico y los linderos de las montañas de Otay.

La decisión de agilizar el cambio parece basarse en que la semana pasada desconocidos tumbaron una parte del viejo muro construido en la década de los años 90, y por otro lado hurtaron parte del muro en la zona conocida como la canalización, para llevarse el metal, posiblemente para venderlo para reciclaje.

Las autoridades divulgaron una fotografía en la que se ve un tramo del viejo muro tumbado e indicaron que sospechaban que se trató de una estrategia para cruzar por ahí migrantes.

El anuncio oficial de agilizar el muro no se centró tanto en los trabajos de reemplazo sino en que DHS va a ignorar leyes federales de protección ambiental para llevar a cabo la nueva construcción, y así acabarlo rápidamente.

Nielsen informó que la autoridad para ignorar leyes ambientales la otorgó el congreso el en año 2006 a su departamento para que asuma un “control operacional” de la frontera en caso de ser necesario.

Argumentó la necesidad de control al ingreso de indocumentados, y por “la importancia crítica de la seguridad fronteriza”.

“La secretaria de Seguridad Interior ha determinado que, con base legal, es necesario ignorar ciertas leyes, reglamentos y otros

requerimientos legales, para asegurarse de que se puede construir expeditamente barreras y caminos en las inmediaciones internacionales cerca de la ciudad de San Diego en el estado de California”, dice el documento.

La orden ejecutiva del 2006 la promulgó el ex presidente George Bush para evitar múltiples demandas de residentes de la frontera de Texas a quienes el muro dividió sus terrenos.

Según la secretaria, ahora el muro adicional en San Diego es necesario porque en el 2018 en el área de San Diego fueron detenidos 38 mil indocumentados.

Aunque la declaración no especifica, la patrulla fronteriza reconoce que esa cifra incluye a miles de migrantes centroamericanos que cruzaron la frontera para rendirse o entregarse a autoridades fronterizas como primer paso para solicitar asilo en Estados Unidos.

“Para satisfacer las necesidades

de infraestructura adicional para la patrulla fronteriza en el sector de San Diego, DHS construirá muro secundario y caminos paralelos a la frontera”, indicó la secretaria.

La zona en que será la construcción será “desde el Océano pacífico hasta el monumento 251 que es donde inicia la elevación de las montañas de Otay rumbo a Tecate.

El año pasado el HSD había anunciado que usaría esa misma orden ejecutiva para construir barda de la frontera de California, pero sin especificar el área donde construiría.

El estado de California y grupos ambientalistas demandaron al gobierno del presidente Donald Trump, al considerar que una orden ejecutiva del 2006 que se giró principalmente para evadir demandas de rancheros fronterizos en Texas carecía de vigencia a perpetuidad. Un tribunal de apelaciones, sin embargo, falló a favor de la administración Trump.

Ineficientes Viajes en Transporte Público para Trabajadores POR MARIELENA CASTELLANOS

Algunos de los trabajadores más dedicados de San Diego pasan una enorme cantidad de tiempo para llegar a sus trabajos.

Luis Robledesco toma dos horas y media para llegar a su trabajo y otras dos horas y media para llegar a su casa. Antes de que salga el sol, su viaje comienza temprano primero cruzar la frontera de Tijuana a San Ysidro, donde aborda el Trolley de San Diego, se traslada a un autobús y luego se dirige hacia el este de Chula Vista.

Robledesco dice que ni siquiera quiere hablar sobre lo que pasa para llegar desde su casa en Tijuana hasta la frontera. Es un viaje que ha hecho durante los últimos 10 años. Robledesco dijo que siempre ha llegado a tiempo con algunas excepciones cuando el Trolley no funcionaba.

"No se puede hacer nada, solo esperar a que se mueva (el Trolley) ", dijo Robledesco.

Para Ana Jimenez, madre soltera

de dos hijos, es una experiencia algo similar. A Jiménez puede llevarle de dos a tres horas llegar a su trabajo en La Jolla desde Linda Vista.

Jiménez dijo que en el pasado, los fines de semana, sintiéndose cansada después de trabajar ocho horas o más, ha perdido el último autobús de la noche.

"Esos son los peores momentos porque tengo que llamar a parientes lejanos en la noche, despertarlos y esperar que puedan que venir por mi. Tampoco me gusta porque mis hijos se quedan solos por mucho tiempo", dijo Jiménez.

Jiménez dijo que a pesar de que ella gana un poco más del salario mínimo con todas sus otras responsabilidades financieras, es imposible ahorrar para un automóvil.

Jiménez y Robledesco forman parte de una estadística que establece que la mayoría de los empleos no pueden alcanzarse utilizando el transporte público.

Además, el 70 por ciento de los empleos no están disponibles en tránsito público dentro de los 90 minutos en el área de servicio de MTS, según un análisis de Brookings Institution de los datos de 371 proveedores de tránsito en las 100 áreas metropolitanas más grandes de la nación.

Estos largos desplazamientos están en la mente de varias organizaciones comunitarias que apoyan una boleta electoral de MTS para 2020 donde la equidad de transporte es una prioridad.

La Coalición para la Salud Ambiental, la Corporación de Desarrollo Comunitario de City Heights, el Centro de Iniciativas de Políticas, la Red de Abogacía Comunitaria de Mid-City y San Diego 350 se enumeran en una hoja informativa que establece una iniciativa que mejoraría la conexión de las personas con los puestos de trabajo, hacer que el precio sea asequible, y garantizar que la región cumpla con sus objetivos climáticos.

La Coalición de Salud Ambiental dice que los residentes de comunidades de bajos ingresos tienen un mayor riesgo de enfermedades debido a las emisiones de contaminación del aire relacionadas con el transporte.

También dice que el 66 por ciento de los usuarios de tránsito tienen bajos ingresos y en la Ciudad de San Diego las familias de bajos ingresos dependen del tránsito tres veces más en comparación con el resto de los residentes de la Ciudad en general.

Después de pasar 30 años en transporte publico, a María del Castillo le cuesta creer que su tiempo de viaje pueda reducirse.

"Me sorprendería", dice del Castillo sobre la reducción de los tiempos de viaje. Se despierta temprano por la mañana viajando dos horas por la mañana y entre dos horas y media y tres horas por la tarde para llegar a su trabajo en Solana Beach y regresar a su hogar en Normal Heights.

Mientras que mucha gente inicia su semana con un poco de letargo, Nancy Maldonado, la nueva directora ejecutiva de la organización comunitaria Chicano Federation, no pierde el tiempo los lunes por la mañana. Antes de hablar con La Prensa San Diego, ella se reunió con un consejo de planeación el cual informa y aconseja al Condado sobre cómo llevar cuidado infantil y recursos a familias.

“Cada año el Condado realiza un sondeo para ver donde se encuentran las mayores necesidades en guarderías.

Así que con el nuevo interés en guarderías infantiles por parte del nuevo gobernador, queremos determinar cuál sería el mejor uso de posibles recursos; ver donde pueden ser mejor invertidos”, explico.

“También tienes que ver que el dinero no resuelve el problema de proveer cuidado infantil porque no hay espacios disponibles, así que tenemos que ver cómo incrementamos la capacidad para un incremento en cuidado infantil”.

“Así que si, bastante ocupada trabajando en algunos temas”, agregó sonriendo.

Sumándose a Chicano Federation en 2017 como directora de programas, el talento y liderazgo de Maldonado fue percibido brevemente dentro de la organización, llevándola a ser promovida a directora de operaciones en 2018. Hoy, como la ejecutiva de esta ONG, ella encabeza a la organización rumbo a su 50 aniversario y a grandes cambios para mejor servir a las miles de familias que se benefician de este organismo.

“Chicano Federation ofrece excelentes programas, pero muchas veces son operados de manera aislada, así que quiero ver cómo podemos ser un poco más comprehensivos para que cuando la gente venga puedan aprender todo acerca de nuestros servicios y nos podamos asegurar que cada persona y familia que venga a nosotros sea completamente ayudada”, dijo.

Y aunque nunca descarta nuevas ideas, la ejecutiva da a conocer que continuar a ofrecer los servicios disponibles con un mayor grado de cuidado y atención es importante. Ella señala el programa preescolar de Barrio Logan y a otros recursos en la comunidad como algo que “está aquí para quedarse”.

El trabajo de abogacia y asesoria en temas de salud que lleva Maldonado no es algo nuevo. Ella es licenciada en kinesiología y también cuenta con una maestría en ciencias deportivas, lo cual informó su trabajo en bienestar corporativo. Antes de llegar a Chicano Federation en su previo rol de directora de programas, ofreció sus servicios como directora de salud comunitaria con la Asociación Cardiaca de los Estados Unidos al igual que con con un subsidiario de esta. Gran 2018 para Turismo en Baja California

Los últimos ejercicios demotécnicos realizados por reconocidas firmas encuestadoras de México, coinciden en que la popularidad del Presidente López Obrador se encuentra en un inusitado porcentaje superior a los ochentas por ciento.

No hay números similares para otros presidentes de México registradas para el mismo periodo (sesenta días de gobierno), y tampoco se tiene memoria de que en otros lares se de una situación semejante, lejos al contrario, se observan bajas de popularidad tan pronto se asume el poder. La población espera mejoras inmediatas que no son fáciles atender en el corto plazo.

El número es más relevante si se asume que desde el propio día de la elección, el primero de julio de 2018, López Obrador empezó a comportarse como un presidente virtual, al eclipsarse el mediocre y nefasto gobierno de Enrique Peña y de su partido, el PRI, envuelto en las más vergonzosas imágenes de ineptitud, corrupción e impunidad.

López Obrador es un animal político de largo colmillo, se sabe todo de casi todo en materia electoral, y en el arte de seducir masas con más razón. Mañas y buenas costumbres, más de las primeras, que le han permitido armar una inteligente y desconcertada estrategia de posicionamiento.

Su discurso se centra en el ataque a la corrupción que tiene enfadados a todos los mexicanos. Décadas de saqueo sin medida que en el último sexenio rebasaron cualquier escenario imaginable, el robo a las arcas nacionales y al bolsillo de todas las clases sociales fueron a parar en una mafia enquistada en el poder político; medraron en todos los capítulos de la contabilidad nacional, aún en los más sensibles como salud, programas sociales, infraestructura, energéticos y educación. El pueblo acompaña solidariamente a López Obrador en sus jornadas anticorrupción, pero suenan más a alharaca que a resultados concretos, el manto del perdón y el borrón y cuenta nueva deslucen sus propósitos.

Renglón aparte es el tema de la inseguridad, los índices de criminalidad alcanzan cifras espeluznantes por lo que cualquier proyecto, por malo y reiterativo que sea, recibe el beneplácito social, pero no se dimensiona cabalmente el riesgo que implica la intención de conceder a los militares el combate a la delincuencia y el peligro que puede representar en el disfrute de las libertades sociales.

La agenda presidencial es caótica, advertíamos en nuestra entrega anterior la perdida de brújula en sus desconcertantes conferencias “mañaneras”, en donde se abordan todo tipo de temas, los casuales y los trascendentes, en una mezcla de ocurrencias y despropósitos. Se alude a personas a las que sin ninguna prudencia se les adjetiviza de mala manera, se presentan programas sin sustento, sin precisar los

BAJA TOURISM BOOMS IN 2018

A pesar de la retórica negativa por parte del presidente de los estados Unidos acerca de los mexicanos y noticias de inseguridad al sur de la frontera, la Secretaria de Turismo de Baja California reporta que el 2018 fue de los mejores años para el la industria turística de la entidad.

“Se vio mucho éxito este año con 27 millones de visitantes a nuestro estado, quienes dejaron un insumo económico de 6 mil millones de dólares”, señaló Oscar Escobedo, secretario de turismo del Estado de Baja

California.

De acuerdo con estadísticas publicadas por el Estado, el 84 por ciento de los visitantes a Baja California visitan tienen como punto de origen el vecino estado estadounidense de California. Esta relación ha llevado a que una gran parte de los 79 millones de cruces fronterizos internacionales registrados en Baja California sean de carácter lúdico.

“Geográficamente, estamos divididos por una frontera, pero funcionamos como una sola región” aseveró Escobedo. “Nuestras culturas están intrínsecamente conectadas no solo a

través de nuestras economías, cultura, educación y, por supuesto, el turismo, sino que también están unidas por la sangre, ya que tenemos familias en ambos lados de la frontera”.

El 10 por ciento de las visitas foráneas al estado 29 de la República Mexicana se reporta son para asistir a eventos como conciertos y festivales o presenciar deportes profesionales como partidos de fútbol del Club Tijuana o juegos de béisbol de las Águilas de Mexicali.

Despite the negative rhetoric regarding Mexicans coming from the White House and news of violence south of the border, the Secretary of Tourism of Baja California reports 2018 as one of its best years on record for the state’s hospitality industry.

“We saw much success this year with 27 million visitors to our state, who brought in an economic input of $6 billion,” highlighted Baja Tourism Secretariat Oscar Escobedo.

According to statistics

published by the State, 84 percent of visitors to Baja came from the neighboring U.S. state of California. This relationship lead to a large portion of the 79 million recorded international entries into Baja California being of a recreational nature.

Bettina Hanna is a Brazilian filmmaker who knows how to make the most of both superficial and meaningful subject matter.

For many years, she has successfully directed teen reality shows for MTV in Brazil. Although she now lives in San Diego, she continues her work with MTV flying back to Brazil several times a year. Here in San Diego, she had made videos for several charitable organizations who work with orphans in Mexico, including Unity 4 Orphans and the Hans Schneider Foundation. The latter is her true passion, for she likes to highlight people with interesting stories and those who help others.

Hanna, 40, was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Although her family was very comfortable economically, her Egyptian born father and Brazilian mother taught her the value of helping others at an early age, something not always commonly done in upper class Brazilian society.

She received her BA in communications with an emphasis on radio and TV and was hired by MTV in 2003, to direct teenage reality shows. In 2009, she moved to San Diego to study journalism with her husband, Brian, a tennis pro and coach. They also studied English. Their plan was to only stay one year,

but they both fell in love with San Diego.

Bettina wanted to start doing her own work, so she bought a camera and with her background knowledge, began to learn everything she needed to know to make good videos, such as camera work, editing and audio. Her first video was that of a military family reunion. She filmed the family greeting the father who had just returned from deployment in Afghanistan, an emotional experience.

She continued making videos and in 2013, she set up a Vimeo page where one can view the various documentaries she has made until now.

She received a certificate in communications from SDUIS, a private university in Old Town, and extended her work outreach. She now does social media videos for sports companies and promotional videos for charitable organizations and other social causes.

In the summer of 2017, she went with the Hans Schneider Foundation to Baja California to film the work they were doing there. This foundation had set up three summer camps east of Ensenada for various orphanages. The children from each orphanage got to come and enjoy a week of fun. They did various activities, such as swimming, horseback riding, painting, etc. Hanna says it was a life changing experience which

made her even more passionate about highlighting those who help others, especially children.

In 2018, she got together with Unity 4 Orphans. Unity 4 Orphans was founded by Joe Brandi in 2010 after he made a trip to Kenya. This “regular Joe” decided that he wanted to help less assisted orphanages in Latin America.

His philosophy was not just to visit once, but to build lasting relationships with the kids and the orphanages. They bring toys, food, clothes, blankets, school supplies, and other necessities. One of the orphanages Unity 4 children goes to is City of Angels in Tijuana.

In the fall of 2018, Hanna went with them to film a special day for three orphanages in Tijuana where they had a big, special party.

Volunteers dressed up as Disney characters and princesses to the delight of the children. For Hanna, it was a gratifying experience to see and film the excitement and happiness all around.

Her dream is to continue making videos like these, highlighting people who do good work in communities on both sides of the border.

Finally, she wants to make videos that tell the stories of refugees and immigrants who come to San Diego. As a child of an immigrant, this is also close to her heart.

“This border emergency is nothing more than a manufactured crisis, and California will not be a part of this political theater,” Newsom also said, and he continued, “No more division, no more xenophobia, and no more nativism. We suffered enough from that in the 1990’s with Proposition 187 and Proposition 227.”

Border security and immigration were just some of the different issues Newsom discussed during his speech.

With regard to education, the governor said the state is spending more on schools than ever before, spending $47.3 billion in California’s schools seven years ago, and with the support of the state legislature there could be more than $80 billion for next year, but added more needs to be done.

He also talked about the state’s homeless population, describing families, victims of rent spikes and others suffering from bipolar disorders, schizophrenia or paranoia on the streets, as well as recent outbreaks of hepatitis A in San Diego,

syphilis in Sonoma, and typhus in Los Angeles. To address some of these issues, the governor proposed investing a half a billion dollars for “navigation centers,” or emergency shelters with services on site as well as creating a new commission.

Over the next decade, California’s statewide senior population will increase by four million. In 25 years, it will double. And more than half will require some form of long-term care, Newsom pointed out as the basis for a new Master Plan on Aging.

Newsom also announced the appointment of former California first lady Maria Shriver to lead a new Alzheimer’s Prevention and Preparedness Task Force.

To address the lack of affordable housing in the state, Newsom said he he’s committed $750 million for a major new incentive package for communities to update their housing plans and revamp zoning for more housing.

The governor did bring up high rents in the state and the need for new rules to stabilize neighborhoods and prevent evictions.

Keeping healthcare affordable for Californians is also among the governor’s priorities. Newsom announced a $1 billion investment. He wants to make sure all state residents have health insurance, and to increase subsidies for middle class families.

Newsom also wants to expand Medi-Cal coverage to all Californians up to age 26, regardless of their immigration status.

He also wants to help families who can barely make ends meet by working with state lawmakers to provide a cost of living refund by expanding the earned income tax credit to a million more residents in the state.

The governor also said he wants Californians to make money from their data, and he will work to develop a proposal for what he referred to as a new data dividend for Californians.

Climate change, the criminal justice system, free community college, paid family leave, reforming the state tax code, and improvements at the DMV are other priorities Newsom said he will address in the coming months.

El presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador anunció que el plan de seguridad nacional comienza en Tijuana, y enseguida lo amenazaron en mantas que colgaron en diversos rumbos de Tijuana. La primera vez que amenazan a un presidente en Tijuana.

“Vamos a comenzar en Tijuana, donde hay un incremento de los homicidios”, dijo el mandatario.

Fueron 2,508 asesinatos en el 2018, una cantidad sin precedentes, y otros 2018 tan solo en el mes de enero.

El secretario de Seguridad, Crescencio Sandoval González, dijo que la seguridad se va a reforzar con militares, con policías federales y la participación de policías estatales.

El plan consiste en agregar 1,800 elementos, entre soldados, marinos y policías

federales, que dividirán a la ciudad de Tijuana en doce sectores para lanzar operativos.

La semana pasada llegaron grupos de soldados, pero este fin de semana se unió un contingente de 500 militares.

Sin embargo en cuanto el presidente dio a conocer los planes de seguridad para Tijuana, desconocidos colgaron en diversos puntos de la ciudad una serie de mantas con amenazas al mandatario y exigencias de que se abstenga de lanzar la ofensiva contra el crimen organizado.

Las mantas se destacaron, además de por ser las primeras que amenazan a un presidente en Tijuana, por estar escritas con una letra completamente legible y con respeto a la ortografía, muy distintas a las llamadas “narcomantas” con que a menudo se amenazan entre si las células de carteles.

El presidente, en respuesta a periodistas que le advirtieron que la gente exige que se cuide y que use guardaespaldas, comentó: “Le agradezco a la gente, de todo corazón, que se preocupe por este asunto, pero no soy temerario, me cuido, porque donde voy siempre me acompaña la gente, pero necesito estar en contacto con la gente y ya iniciamos un proceso de transformación en el país y no nos vamos a detener”.

López Obrador dijo que “no nos vamos a dejar intimidar; tengo miedo como todos los seres humanos, pero no soy cobarde”.

La coalición Alianza Migrante informó que tendrá que abandonar su proyecto de ayuda a por lo menos 500 mexicanos deportados en Tijuana porque opera con recursos propios que se han agitado sin ayuda de ninguna autoridad.

“Nosotros abrimos este campamento para ayudar a los deportados mexicanos desde noviembre, cuando en la ciudad miles de migrantes centroamericanos llenaban los refugios y los deportados no tenían a dónde llegar y se quedaban en la calle”, dijo Sergio Tamai, director de Ángeles Sin Fronteras.

La coalición esperaba que el gobierno de Tijuana ayudará a mantener el proyecto, pero no les ayudaron.

“Nosotros les dimos a los migrantes las tiendas de campaña y limpiamos el lugar para que pudieran quedarse aquí, pero no recibimos ayuda para continuar; solo Médicos sin Fronteras nos apoyó al rentar servicios higiénicos portátiles, pero esta gente

tiene hambre y frío y nos vemos sin recursos”, agregó Tamai.

El asentamiento se encuentra en la Plaza Constitución, se le conoce también como el “parque del mapa” y durante más de tres meses alojó a deportados y parcialmente a indigentes o “personas en situación de calle”.

La situación es más crítica porque el gobierno de México decidió que ya no va a ayudar a través de organizaciones, sino directamente a las personas, para evitar intermediarios y posibles desvíos de recursos. Pero por ahora no se ha decidido apoyar a los migrantes mexicanos.

En conferencia de prensa Tamai y otros dirigentes dijeron que propondrán al gobierno de México que a cada deportado se le entregue, al momento de ser expulsado a México, una tarjeta con un monto por entre tres mil y cinco mil pesos.

“Con ese dinero podrían hospedarse en un lugar que no cueste mucho mientras consiguen trabajo, o tal vez días de hotel, o regresar a sus

lugares de origen y tener algo para alimentarse en el camino”, dijo Lourdes Lizardi, de Alianza Migrante.

Pero la falta de recursos ha comenzado a causar mella en las organizaciones. Por ejemplo, el Hotel Migrante, un edificio que realmente sirvió durante años como alojamiento para cientos de personas en Mexicali, cerró sus plantas altas y este mes va a dejar de funcionar por falta de recursos.

The significance of leading an organization with such a rich history of community empowerment and neighborhood-oriented services is not lost on the new head of the nonprofit. history and its goals. “(Reaching out to previous leadership) is one of the first things I did so I could learn things I did not know and everyone I reached has been very helpful and they also have many artifacts such as articles and notes so that I can get a sense of what was going on when Chicano Federation was created, who it was created for, and to make sure that I honor the history of the roots of the organization,” Maldonado detailed.

While she is up for the challenge of leading an organization with such a rich history into its 50th anniversary, she insists that the most important responsibility she has is making sure families seeking services from Chicano Federation have all their needs fulfilled.

“A year from now I would love to say that all of our programs are the best quality programs and that when a family comes in we understand what their needs are to address them,” Maldonado closed.

A la escuadra sendieguina le urge encontrar entre sus jóvenes promesas a peloteros de calidad que puedan hacer que el equipo sea competitivo dentro de la División Oeste de la Liga Nacional.

Los Padres tienen en su campo de entrenamiento a un total de 13 prospectos que poseen las herramientas necesarias para convertirse en jugadores de alto impacto.

Entre los jóvenes a seguir en el campamento de primavera se encuentra Luis Urias, el mexicano originario de Padre de Kino, Sonora, que tiene una buena oportunidad de convertirse en el segunda base titular de los Padres.

Con el tiempo se ha consolidado como uno de los mejores arqueros de la Liga MX y ahora Gibrán Lajud tiene la oportunidad de ganarse la titularidad en la selección mexicana.

El portero de los Xolos de Tijuana apareció en la primera convocatoria del nuevo técnico del Tri, Gerardo Martino, y eso es algo que tiene muy ilusionado al guarda vallas del cuadro canino.

Hemos visto en Michael Phelps al atleta que más se acerca a ser un superhéroe de ficción al cosechar todo el oro posible en las albercas olímpicas.

Nos hemos emocionado con Usain Bolt, la saeta jamaiquina que devora los 100 metros planos en menos de nueve segundos.

Damos por hecho que cada día de nuestras vidas las estrellas del deporte van a estar listos para entretenernos con sus increíbles atributos físicos y atléticos.

La triste realidad es que conforme pasa el tiempo, estas estrellas del deporte se eclipsarán, tal y como ya sucedió con Bolt y Phelps.

Aprovechemos el poco tiempo que le queda en las trincheras a Messi, Ronaldo y Brady.

Démonos el tiempo de ver todos sus partidos para atesorar en nuestra memoria la gran oportunidad que tuvimos de verlos actuar en la mejor de sus versiones.

Aunque Maldonado está lista para el reto de encabezar una histórica organización a su celebración de medio siglo de existencia, ella insiste que lo más importante sigue siendo asegurarse que las familias que buscan los servicios de Chicano Federation puedan resolver todas sus necesidades.

“A un año de hoy, me encantaría poder decir que todos nuestros programas son de la mejor calidad y que estamos dando mejores servicios de manera constante y tambien me encantaria decir que cuando una familia viene a nosotros entendemos sus necesidades para poderlas atender”, concluyó.

Pursuant to California Government Code sections 4525, et seq., the San Diego Unified School District (“District”) is soliciting written statements of qualifications from qualified firms and persons to provide hazardous materials testing services in connection with construction and major repair and modernization projects at various active K-12 schools and child development center sites. El Alzheimer es una enfermedad complicada que, desafortunadamente, no tiene cura. Los productos que hacen afirmaciones no probadas sobre algún medicamento pueden inducir a error a los consumidores y hacerles creer que tales terapias existen y evitar que accedan a tratamientos que se sabe que ayudan a aliviar los síntomas de la enfermedad, o peor aún, algunos tratamientos fraudulentos pueden provocar lesiones graves o incluso mortales. En pocas palabras, los fraudes médicos se aprovechan de las personas vulnerables, malgastan dinero y a menudo retrasan la prestación de atención médica apropiada, por lo que seguiremos tomando medidas para proteger a los pacientes y cuidadores frente a productos engañosos y de eficacia no demostrada”, dijo Scott Gottlieb, comisionado de la FDA. “Las medidas tomadas hoy forman parte del esfuerzo más amplio de la FDA para dar respuesta al rápido crecimiento de la industria de los suplementos alimenticios mediante la implementación de iniciativas regulatorias modernas que permitan a la dependencia conservar una visión equilibrada de la ley de Salud y Educación sobre los Suplementos Dietéticos (DSHEA, por sus siglas en inglés), promulgada por el Congreso hace 25 años. En una declaración publicada hoy, Gottlieb, también perfiló varias nuevas medidas importantes y prioridades normativas que la dependencia tomará en los meses venideros para mejorar la seguridad de los suplementos alimenticios, incluidos esfuerzos para informar más rápidamente al público acerca de posibles problemas de seguridad de estos productos, establecer un marco regulatorio flexible que promueva la innovación y proteja la seguridad de los productos, y otras nuevas medidas que la FDA podría considerar para garantizar la seguridad y la integridad de los productos.

En los últimos años también hemos tomado medidas contra compañías y suplementos alimenticios que hacen afirmaciones parecidas sobre enfermedades graves como el cáncer y la adicción a los opiáceos. Aunque estas compañías pueden haber dejado de vender los productos o de hacer afirmaciones no probadas, numerosos productos inseguros y no aprobados continúan vendiéndose directamente a los consumidores debido en parte a la facilidad con la que las compañías pueden mover sus operaciones de comercialización a nuevos sitios web.
