City Heights Looks Ahead to 2020 Presidential Election

ll across the country, voter enthusiasm was at an all-time high this past midterm election, including here in San Diego. As many as 31 million ballots had already been cast nationwide just days before the election, the New York Times reported. On election day, inside a small room in City Heights, volunteers ESPAÑOL P.4 PROFILE

moved in and out throughout the day in what capsulated the final day of get out the vote efforts to neighborhoods ignored by traditional political campaigns. The energy and enthusiasm of the election was also felt there. Brenda Diaz, the Civic Engagement Team Lead with the non-profit Mid-City Community Advocacy Network (CAN) talked about the response from residents as volunteers called and knocked on the doors of their homes to go out and vote.
“We’ve been seeing a lot of people thankful because nobody is really knocking on these people’s doors just because they are low propensity voters,” she stated. Organizers with Mid-City CAN were working the elections to turn out people of color, working families and the immigrant and refugee residents that make up City Heights. But they were also looking past the midterms, eyeing the future and beyond to create a new electorate. Their efforts to turn out voters this election is part of a long-term plan
to increase the number of voters in the upcoming presidential election in 2020, still two years away. They also want to change the reputation from a community that tends not to vote to one that does by increasing the number of voters in the hopes of getting decision makers to take the needs of residents seriously. When Nick Aguilar told his mother and stepfather he was enlisting in the United States Army rather than continuing his studies at Southwestern College, the news was not met with smiling faces. This is how “Nick Aguilar: A Direction Home” begins. This documentary film produced by Shoestring Educational Productions features conversations between local historian Abe Shragge and Aguilar in which the Purple Heart recipient opens up about life in the military, his struggles with PTSD after discharge, and his career in public service after his duty in Vietnam. Aguilar shared a DVD copy of this feature with La Prensa San Diego when initially contacted for a profile. While he politely declined an interview, Aguilar said the film was a good look into his life and allowed our staff to base a biographical article on the details the film narrates. Born in a small town in Jalisco, Mexico, Aguilar arrived to the San Diego area with his family when he was just seven years old. During his school years, Aguilar excelled as a student at Sweetwater High School in

ás de 1,300 militares llegaron a la frontera de California con México, incluyendo a los puertos de entrada de San Diego ante la llegada de la Caravana Migrante que viene desde Honduras hacia Estados Unidos. Las tropas llegaron para asegurar la frontera y asistir a oficiales de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP, por sus siglas en inglés) y a los agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza (BP, por sus siglas en inglés) unos días antes de la llegada de los integrantes de la Caravana Migrante, que llegaron a Tijuana desde el domingo, 11 de noviembre. “CBP se ha preparado y se va a continuar preparando para el arribo potencial de miles de personas que están migrando en una caravana que se dirige hacia Estados Unidos”, dijo Pete Flores, director de operaciones de CBP
en San Diego. “Estas preparaciones incluyen ejercicios de entrenamiento, el despliegue de oficiales de CBP adicionales, y la asociación con el personal militar de Estados Unidos para reforzar nuestras garitas y el área de la frontera en las áreas de cruce hacia Estados Unidos”. Un cierre parcial inició a partir de este martes, 12 de noviembre en la garita de San Ysidro y el puerto de entrada de Otay Mesa. Criticism of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors was expressed by several community leaders, immigrant rights advocates, and residents over the timing of a required community rights forum intended for immigrants impacted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The forum was scheduled at the same time as the regularly scheduled County Board of Supervisors meeting, but seats inside the meeting room were overwhelmingly filled with people who support the rights of immigrants and people wanting to speak about other issues also scheduled on the official agenda. Early on Dianne Jacob, vice chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, said, “The action before the Board is simply to hold a community forum,” and “Then second, the only action would be to receive a report from the Sheriff ’s department regarding ICE access to individuals during 2017.” Pedro Rios, director of the American Friends Service Committee U.S.-Mexico Border Program, who was one of a group of speakers before the County Board of Supervisors, said that a formal request to move the forum to a time when more people could attend was denied. The forum is a requirement from a new law, the Transparent Review of Unjust Transfers and Holds (TRUTH) Act, which is intended to increase transparency around local engagement with ICE. The law is also meant to help immigrant community members held in local jails and targeted by ICE learn their rights. The law was originally a State bill signed into law in September of

SD Protests for Mueller Probe BY MARIELENA CASTELLANOS
Just over a thousand people stood outside the federal courthouse in downtown San Diego to protest President Trump firing U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replacing him with a known critic of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. Matthew Whitaker, formerly Jeff Session’s chief of staff, will now oversee the probe. The move, which came just one day after the midterm elections where Democrats took control of Congress, was criticized and raised fears about the future of the investigation. Lupe Lujan, a resident of Clairemont went to the protest with her husband. She said she was outraged and believed President Trump is trying to influence the investigation. About Trump Lujan also said, “He should be held accountable.” The ACLU wrote in a statement, “Jeff Sessions was the worst Attorney General in modern American history. Period. But the dismissal of the nation’s top law enforcement official shouldn’t be based on political motives.” Protests were held all over the country to urge protection of the Mueller investigation. The Hill reported #ProtectMueller trended on Twitter as the protests broke out. Marely Ramirez is a member of local action group Indivisible Downtown and was one of the speakers at the protest. Speaking to attendees she said, “We need to continue the investigation of Donald Trump and the collusion with Russia. We demand an investigation. Pancho Villa (Wrongfully) Used to Justify Military at Border
A
lthough it’s been more than 100 years since Pancho Villa set foot in the US, the old revolutionary general was used this week as justification for militarizing our border with Mexico. During the last few weeks before the midterm elections, Donald Trump couldn’t stop talking about the migrant caravan heading north from Honduras and labeled it as an imminent invasion of the US to gin up votes among Republicans. He claimed, without any evidence, that ISIS fighters and unknown Middle Easterners were imbedded among the people mostly walking the 2,000 mile trip through Mexico. Those migrants, it’s assumed, are working their way toward the US in hopes of seeking asylum and refuge from the many dangers they face back home. Just before the election, Trump ordered active US military troops to the border as a show of force against the migrants that were still at least 1,000 miles away. The “threat”, though, consists mainly of women and children fleeing horrific conditions in Central America. In the election, voters turned against Trump and his divisive approach to politics, and instead voted for Democrats in overwhelming numbers, resulting in a flip of 35 districts from Republicans, and handing Trump an embarrassing defeat with Democrats regaining control of the House of Representatives. But, since last week’s elections, Trump has been relatively muted about the caravan. This week he sent his Secretary of Defense, retired Marine General James Mattis, to tour the troops at the border this week along with Homeland Security
Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. Most people now believe that the troop order was nothing more than a political stunt from a president desperate to shore up his voter base. In the end, though, it didn’t work and now the deployment seems like just another blunder for Trump. So, when General Mattis was asked during his visit at the border about the rationale for having troops there, he scrambled to come up with a comparison to justify that this is not the first time troops have amassed along the frontier. General Mattis claimed that this deployment is similar to when the US Army mobilized at the border in 1916 in response to threats from Pancho Villa. Yup, that’s right, he had to reach back 102 years to find anything close to what Trump is trying to do today, and even that comparison, is wholly different. The irony of the argument is that the 1916 Army deployment was called the Punitive Expedition because it was organized solely as a retaliatory move, not a defensive one as the current one claims to be. Mattis is referring to the order by then-President Woodrow Wilson to send Army Lt. General John Pershing into Mexico to hunt down Pancho Villa after the Mexican revolutionary general and his men attacked the city of Columbus, New Mexico, and its Army post, on March 9, 1916. During the attack, Villa’s men killed eight American soldiers and ten civilians, and stole guns, ammunition, horses, and supplies before escaping back into Mexico. In retaliation, Pershing led 6,600 soldiers into Mexico in what he expected would be a simple mission. The expedition included the first use of motorized vehicles in a US military operation, as well as a relatively new
weapon; airplanes. After about two months, though, Pershing’s expedition ultimately ended in frustration after being run in circles by Villa and his forces. In the end, the emerging Mexican military threatened to fight the Americans if they didn’t retreat. Pershing wrote that he was “outwitted and out-bluffed at every turn” by Villa, and that “having dashed into Mexico with the intention of eating the Mexicans raw, we turned back at the first repulse and are now sneaking home under cover, like a whipped [dog] with its tail between its legs”. Pershing’s expedition has now become known as the Mexican Expedition because it sounds more like a treasure hunt than the revengeful incursion that it truly was. To many, it symbolizes the negative attitude that the US has had against Mexico in the past, and has again under President Trump. The caravan of migrants currently in Mexico is not an imminent national security threat as Trump proclaimed. We have over 16,000 Border Patrol agents deployed along the Mexican border who have primary jurisdiction for immigration-related arrests and detainments. For nearly 100 years, the Border Patrol has maintained peace at the border without the use of military troops to fight immigrants. In fact, under federal law, the military cannot directly apprehend suspected undocumented immigrants. During the deployment of both National Guard units, as well as the current military troops, soldiers can only perform support roles like drivers, mechanics, and building fences and erecting barb wire. The image of troops with rifles standing watch at the border is a political myth. This week, the first wave of

Over 1,300 military personnel arrived at the California-Mexico border, including San Diego Ports of Entry, ahead of the arrival of a migrant caravan originating in Honduras. The troops arrived a few days before the migrant caravan reached Tijuana on Sunday, Nov. 11, in order to secure the border and assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and Border Patrol (BP) agents. “CBP has been and will continue to prepare for the potential arrival of thousands of people migrating in a caravan heading towards the border of the United States,” said Pete Flores, director of CBP Field Operations in San Diego. “These preparations include training exercises, deploying additional CBP personnel, and partnering with the U.S. military to harden our ports of entry and the border area between those legal crossings into the U.S.” Department of Defense personnel installed concertina wire, and pre-positioned jersey barriers, barricades, and fencing as requested by CBP under Operation Secure
migrants reached the Tijuana border, but, it wasn’t thousands of people, it was a few hundred, and they didn’t storm the border fence as Trump suggested they would. More migrants are expected to arrive in Tijuana this weekend and into next week in what is expected to total about 3,000. When they arrived at the border this week, many migrants were surprised by the size of the border fence and the heavy Border Patrol presence. One woman said it looked like a scene from a movie. But, it wasn’t the military that kept them from crossing. The caravan migrants are hoping to present themselves legally at the border and apply for asylum, as allowed under US and international laws. No one is storming the fence or causing a riot. The movement of displaced people is happening all over the world, not just along our border. For many years, countries have been dealing with migrants seeking refuge from war, poverty, and violence, and taking people in through their own legal process. The US in capable of handling this current migrant crisis as it has many before; with dignity and fairness. We shouldn’t resort to scare tactics and fear-mongering, we shouldn’t resort to allowing military troops to enforce civilian laws, and we shouldn’t resort to turning away people in need because of their race or ethnicity. There is not a revolution at our border. Pancho Villa is not riding his horse across the border to raid our cities. We are not at war with Mexico. We are better than this. We should act like to world’s richest superpower that we are, not like a backward protectionist country led by a military strong man. That’s exactly what the caravan migrants are fleeing.
Line. The presence of military personnel at the border is temporary, but the number of troops is expected to grow, before they all leave the border on December 15. “We are here at the border in a temporary mission, we are staying here until Dec. 15,” said Jeffrey S. Buchanan, U.S. Army lieutenant general, at a press conference held at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. A complete closure of the San Diego ports of entry is in consideration if the migrant caravan heads to the port as the same way the migrants crossed the border from Guatemala to Mexico, by pushing through. “We are planning ahead for all contingencies, and with the help of the Department of Defense, we started to talk about on how to strengthen the ports of entry,” Flores added. “We have all the contingencies on the table to control the access at the ports, it can be by setting a pathway where people can cross, to a suspension of operations to a full closure, it all depends on the setting we have in front of us.” A partial closure initiated on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the
San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry. At least three northbound vehicle lanes at San Ysidro and one lane at Otay Mesa were closed to install and pre-position port hardening infrastructure equipment in preparation for the migrant caravan and the potential safety and security risk that it could cause. “CBP officials in charge at our local border crossings must always maintain security while we work to efficiently process legitimate trade and travel into the U.S.,” said Flores. “The materials will be used to help strengthen border security, to ensure the safety of the American people, the traveling public, CBP personnel and the communities in which we serve.” CBP will provide an update when the materials are removed and the lanes re-opened, however it is not anticipated to take place until sometime after people in the caravan arrive to the border. CBP officials recommend that persons traveling northbound to the U.S. anticipate possible increased wait times because of the lane closures.

Blind and low-vision travelers can now be more independent and navigate through the San Diego International Airport (SAN) with the help of new technology developed by a local start-up. Using augmented reality, Aira connects people with visual impairments to a trained, live professional agent that provides on-demand assistance through smart glasses or mobile phone cameras. This greatly enhances independence and reduces the user’s reliance on airline personnel to complete pre-flight tasks, such as checking flight status, getting through security, identifying luggage, or finding restaurants and services. “You can come to the airport and if you don’t have the app, you can download it here and subscribe and with a click of a button, and within seconds, you are connected to an Aira live agent and that agent can help you with any task you have at hand. You can do all the things people do at an airport, you can check in what gate is your flight, and
what is the status of your flight, or maybe you want to get a drink or do some shopping, whatever that is, the agent can help you and guide you,” said Aira Chief Operating Officer Troy Otilio to La Prensa San Diego. “People that are blind or have low-vision can have a dog or a cane to go through the airport and they use that to guide them but those don’t tell you where to go, it doesn’t provide you with information.” SAN offers the service free of charge to airport visitors. Other high profile businesses, retailers, airports, supermarket chains, campuses, and sport venues, also offer Aira service for free including UC San Diego and the San Diego Zoo. “Today, if a blind or low-vision person asks for help at an airport, the airlines provide service but what they do, is they put you in a wheelchair like a disabled person, which means you’ll have to wait, it’s inconvenient, and it’s also a little demeaning. And with Aira, you don’t have to wait and sit in a wheelchair,

National City. While he enrolled at Southwestern College, Aguilar did not have a specific career path in mind and chose to sign up for the Army following his brother, who had voluntarily enlisted a couple of years before rather than having been drafted. “After he left, I went to the downtown San Diego recruiting station and wanted to sign up to become a paratrooper,” Aguilar shared with Shragge in the documentary. At the recruiting station, the agent filing Aguilar’s paperwork suggested he sign up for three years rather than four, adding that he can reenlist if he liked the experience. “To this day I thank him,” Aguilar noted. “That was a major decision because if he hadn’t talked me into joining for three years instead of four I would have done two tours in Vietnam instead of one.” “So I went back home and told my stepfather and my mother that I joined the army to become a paratrooper and both of them were very disappointed,” he continued. Weeks after enlisting, Aguilar underwent basic training at Fort Gordon, Georgia and later shipped off to the outskirts of Saigon, where he would join the 173rd Airborne Division as a paratrooper and forward observer for a mortar platoon. With the advent of live, on-location television broadcasts from during the late 60’s, the Vietnam War was the first armed conflict to be broadcasted into

American homes and around the world as it happened. However, prior to Walter Cronkite’s live broadcasts and the eventual influx of coverage as the war dragged on, Aguilar did not yet have a frame of reference of the nature of war prior to seeing action. “I had no idea what war was about,” he said. While in duty, Aguilar would see the horrors of war up close. He recalls not being able to sleep for days after seeing his first dead body and while fighting in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, where he would also be engaged in some of the deadliest battles of the war. After receiving a bullet in his shoulder after attempting to rescue a fellow soldier, Aguilar remained with his unit in a secure village through his recovery until he was given a month’s leave. Shortly after, Aguilar returned to the tranquility of civilian life, which was unsettling for him as he could not relate to others anymore. Despite this, Aguilar resumed his studies at Southwestern College and retook his course load with stellar grades, which lead him to an admission to UC San Diego during the Spring quarter of 1969. Aguilar remembers his time at UCSD as an intense one, which coincided with the peak of the middle of the anti-war and civil rights movements. During this time, he focused on creating equal education opportunities and address civil rights issues at the La Jolla campus. He specifically got involved in
outreach for MexicanAmerican and African-American scholars and submitted proposals to start programs to reach out to these groups to increase enrollment of these minority students. As a law student at UC Davis, he also continued his outreach efforts to Chicano students interested in law at what was then the newest campus in the UC system. As Aguilar continued to resume his life and entered the world of law and public service, the scars of war continued to afflict him. He suffered from what was then known as an anxiety disorder — now known as posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD — and also coped with civilian life through heavy alcohol use. Not willing to take heavy doses of Valium to settle his mental state, Aguilar developed an exercise routine on a doctor’s recommendation and later quit alcohol when he noticed it was inpairing his memory. Over the years, Aguilar served in a variety of leadership roles in the community. He acted as director of student policies and judicial affairs at his alma mater, where he introduced Veteran’s Day as an official holiday for the University of California system. He was a board member for the Sweetwater Union High School District, the Southwestern Community College District and the San Diego County Criminal Justice Council. Aguilar currently lives with his wife Pat Aguilar in Chula Vista.
addressed the reputation in City Heights for low voter turnout and stated, “In 2014 City Heights had 27 percent voter turnout. The Kensington community had somewhere in the 70s and we are neighbors. That’s not good. Same district, neighbors, one street away. If you see the two communities, you can see the disparities there.” Ramirez, also talked about the overall voting goal, “To build a voter block of 5,000 voters so they vote actively. What that means, since we do advocacy, we can go to a City Council meeting and say, we have voters not supporters. We can say this is what our community wants. We have 5,000 voters here in support of this, how are you going to make it happen.” City Heights Votes is the name of the campaign. For the midterms they began their efforts in September, but their initial launch began in 2016. They also did similar efforts in the June Primary of this year. Along some of the community’s major street corridors, including University Avenue and Fairmont Avenue, banners hang along street lamps featuring the faces of parents, young people and neighborhood leaders with a message, “I am City Heights, I vote,” in several different languages. Some of those featured in the banners have been recognized by strangers when they are walking down the streets. City Heights is home to immigrants and refugees from all over the world, from Central America to East Africa. The City Heights Community Development Corporation states there are
over 80,000 residents and there are more than 30 languages and a number of dialects spoken. Volunteers included an ethnically diverse group of people including college students, home owners, members of boards and commissions. After training they went out into the different neighborhoods knocking on doors, making phone calls and registering people to vote. Inside the volunteer room it was not unusual to hear volunteers speaking in Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Samoan. Mid-City CAN hoped they would get 2,500 people to vote for the midterm elections. Edgar Ontiveros Medina, a media specialist with Mid-City CAN, addressed some of the challenges in getting immigrants and refugees to vote and how Mid-City CAN is answering some of the challenges. Among the challenges is distrust. Medina said explained how the organization is addressing the issue, “We are working with families who come from countries where it was dangerous to vote to express their voice, especially with a lot of refugees and people living here with asylum, building trust is very important. That’s why we believe in knowing our neighbors, trying to call them, meet them at their homes.” “A lot of our communities are isolated and divided. It’s much easier for one community to point to another community and say it’s their fault we don’t have a job or for people to point to immigrants or for immigrants to
point to refugees,” Medina said. He added, “We live in a system that’s meant to divide our communities and it benefits off dividing and conquering. We think we can change that system by doing the opposite of dividing, which is coming together making sure we understand. I’m a Latino. I understand my Muslim neighbor. I support them. I see the commonalities and when I vote, I think of my Muslim LGBT queer sisters.” Medina also pointed out, “It’s the myth of the American dream, pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. You have to compete against everybody else. As Latinos, we come from communities where family is everything. We come from traditions of sharing. We had communal lands. At Mid-City CAN, we’re trying to work towards those traditions of building community. A lot of that has to do with understanding and caring for your neighbor.”

n todo el país, el entusiasmo del electorado estuvo en su punto más alto en las últimas elecciones, incluso aquí en San Diego. Según informaba el New York Times, ya se habían emitido 31 millones de votos en todo el país unos días antes de las elecciones. El día de las elecciones, dentro de una pequeña sala en el vecindario de City Heights, voluntarios entraban y salían a lo largo del día en lo que encapsulaba el último día de los
esfuerzos de votación en comunidades ignoradas por las campañas políticas tradicionales. La energía y el entusiasmo de la elección también se sintió allí. Brenda Díaz, líder del organismo comunitario sin fines de lucro Mid-City CAN, habló sobre cómo reaccionaban los residentes cuando los voluntarios llamaban y tocaban las puertas de sus hogares para salir y votar. "Hemos visto a mucha gente agradecida porque nadie está realmente tocando las puertas de estas personas solo porque son
votantes de baja propensión", dijo. Los organizadores de Mid-City CAN estaban trabajando en las elecciones para atraer a minorías, familias trabajadoras y los residentes inmigrantes y refugiados que conforman City Heights. Los viajeros que son ciegos o tienen poca visión ya pueden ser navegar de manera más independiente por el Aeropuerto Internacional de San Diego (SAN, por sus siglas en inglés) con la ayuda de Aira, una nueva tecnología desarrollada por una empresa local. Aira utiliza la realidad aumentada para conectar a las personas con discapacidades visuales con un agente profesional y capacitado en vivo, que brinda asistencia por medio de lentes inteligentes o cámaras de teléfonos móviles. Este servicio reduce la dependencia del usuario en el personal de las aerolíneas para completar rutinas en el aeropuerto como revisar el estatus de los vuelos, pasar por seguridad, identificar las maletas, o encontrar restaurantes y servicios. “Puedes llegar al aeropuerto, y si no tienes la aplicación, puedes bajarla aquí mismo y suscribirte, y
con el clic de un botón, te conectarás en segundos con un agente de Aira, y ese agente te puede ayudar con las tareas que necesites realizar. Puedes hacer todo lo que hace una persona en el aeropuerto, revisar en que puerta de embarque está tu vuelo, revisar el estatus de vuelo, o ir a comprar algo de tomar o ir de compras, cualquier cosa que necesites, el agente te va a ayudar y te va a guiar”, dijo Troy Otilio, encargado de operaciones de Aira, a La Prensa San Diego. “Las personas que están ciegas o que tienen poca visión pueden tener un perro o bastón que los ayude a trasladarse por el aeropuerto, pero no les va a decir a donde ir, eso no les proporciona información”. Nick Aguilar: SIEMPRE AL SERVICIO

Cuando Nick Aguilar le dijo a su madre y padrastro que se había inscrito en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos en lugar de continuar sus estudios en Southwestern College, la noticia no fue recibida con felicidad. Así es como inicia el documental “Nick Aguilar: A Direction Home”. Esta cinta producida por Shoestring Educational Productions muestra conversaciones entre el historiador local Abe Shragge y Aguilar en las cuales el recipiente de la condecoración militar Corazón Púrpura da detalles sobre su vida en la milicia, sus estragos de salud mental y su carrera en el sector público luego de su gira por Vietnam. Aguilar compartió una copia de este documental en DVD con La Prensa San Diego cuando se le contactó inicialmente para una entrevista de perfil. Aunque declinó a ser entrevistado de manera cortés, Aguilar afirmó que el largometraje daba un vistazo a su vida y permitió a nuestro personal basar un artículo biográfico sobre los detalles narrados en esta obra. Nacido en un pequeño pueblo del Estado de Jalisco en México, Aguilar llegó a San Diego con tan solo siete años de edad. Durante sus años estudiantiles, Aguilar sobresalió como estudiante en la Preparatoria Sweetwater de National City. Aunque se matriculó en el Southwestern College, Aguilar no tenía una meta como profesionista en mente y decidió entrar al Ejercito para seguir a su hermano, quien ingresó antes de ser seleccionado por el “Draft”. “Luego que se fue, fui a la estación de reclutamiento del centro de San Diego y quise enlistarme como paracaidista”, Aguilar compartió con Shragge en el documental. En la estación de reclutamiento, el agente a cargo de Aguilar sugirió que ingrese por tres años en lugar de cuatro, agregando que podría renovar si le gustaba la experiencia. “Hasta el dia de hoy le doy las gracias”, subrayó. “Esa fue una decisión vital porque si no me hubiera convencido de unirme por tres años en vez de cuatro hubiera realizado dos giras por Vietnam en lugar de una”. CCLC Anuncia Campaña Millonaria para Ayudar a Inmigrantes POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO
El Centro Legal de Casa Cornelia anunció su más grande campaña de recaudación de fondos, una campaña de 8.5 millones de dólares para proporcionar servicios legales a niños inmigrantes, solicitantes de asilo, y víctimas de crímenes. Esta organización sin fines de lucro que ofrece servicios
legales gratuitos para la comunidad inmigrante de San Diego, lanzó su campaña en su evento de celebración de su aniversario 25, en el que recaudaron 364,000 dólares para su meta. El Centro Legal de Casa Cornelia (CCLC, por sus siglas en inglés) es una de las pocas organizaciones en la región que cuenta con abogados y ofrece servicios legales
gratuitos en casos humanitarios y es la única que representa a niños detenidos. La recaudación de fondos es para ayudar con los fondos necesarios para que inmigrantes cuenten con una representación de calidad para el ambiente legal actual. Más de 600 invitados se reunieron en la celebración del aniversario 25, y se recaudaron más de 364,000
dólares, una inversión récord para el inicio de la campaña para apoyar a clientes de Casa Cornelia. “Fue muy alentador el celebrar el aniversario 25 de Casa Cornelia con tantos que apoyan nuestra misión de ayudar a víctimas de violaciones de los derechos humanos”, dijo Ann M. Durst, co-fundadora de Casa Cornelia. “Mientras que a
menudo nos enfocamos en la difícil situación de los que huyen de la persecución, nuestra celebración proporcionó una oportunidad para reconocer todo el bien que hemos logrado en el paso de los años, y agradecer a los que su generosidad hizo todo esto posible. A stretch of Evans Street in Barrio Logan now bears the name of one of the neighborhood’s military heroes. During a ceremony held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7420, more commonly known as the Don Diego VFW, an honorary street sign bearing the name of Adam Gastelum was officially revealed and dedicated. The sign dedication and ceremony was a group effort undertaken by the Logan Heights Veterans Memorial group, comprised of Don Diego members and best known for the creation of the veterans memorial monument on the east end

Gastelum was born in Gilbert, Arizona on August 13, 1923 to a family migrating north from Mexico. He served as a member of the Army during World War II, seeing action in Normandy and central Germany. He founded VFW Post 7420 in April of 1955, which was originally hosted in a downtown building until its current location was purchased by post members. Since founding Don Diego,
he served as post commander, community leader,and also held several positions throughout the VFW organization at a state level. Gastelum passed away in his home in Logan Heights last year. Doreen Cruz, Gastelum’s daughter, spoke of her
father’s character and why he connected with so many in his community, “He was a person that didn’t care where you were from, he believed in the good in other people, he was inclusive, and believed in the best that everyone had to offer.” District 8 Councilman
David Alvarez was among the invited speakers. He shared with attendees why he believes Gastelum is someone who deserves to be recognized. “Not only did he believe in his community and in others, but he acted that way and that is what matters, that our behavior and the things we do represent that belief in trying to create a better community. That is what Adam Gastelum stood for,” Alvarez shared. After Alvarez presented Gastelum’s family with replicas of the sign, attendees stepped out to the street corner where the street sign hororing this neighborhood veteran was unveiled. Kenneth Robert Martinez
is a member of the Logan Heights Veterans Memorial Group. He stood by the sign on the corner of Logan and Evans as it was uncovered. He shared with La Prensa San Diego some memories of the honoree and what the dedication means to the group. “When I came back from Vietnam, and got out of the VA hospital, they told me about the club and how it was made of a lot of Hispanic and Mexican guys and Adam was there to welcome me in on my first day,” Martinez Recalled. “The man deserves this recognition we got him because he did a lot of good work in the neighborhood, helped lots of needy people and was a good man.”

Cientos de Migrantes Esperan en Tijuana para Solicitar Asilo a EEUU

Cientos de inmigrantes centroamericanos han arribado a la frontera entre Tijuana y San Diego con la mira en solicitar asilo político a Estados Unidos. Este grupo forma parte de una multitudinaria caravana que se espera, alcancen la región fronteriza en próximos días. Para celebrar su llegada, el grupo se dirigió hasta las inmediaciones del Parque de la Amistad para ver de cerca el muro que separa los dos países. Algunos fueron más allá y lo escalaron para llegar al otro lado ante la mirada de agentes fronterizos que custodiaban la zona, aunque finalmente, optaron por regresar a suelo mexicano por su propio pie. En primera instancia, optaron por pasar la noche en el sitio. Lo más cerca posible del “sueño americano”, decían. Finalmente, autoridades en México habilitaron albergues para darles refugio mientras
esperan su turno para hacer su petición en el cruce internacional. Dicho proceso podría demorar semanas. Recientemente, Pete Flores, director de operaciones terrestres para la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP, por sus siglas en inglés) en San Diego, adelantó que el espacio para procesar a quienes llegan en búsqueda de refugio es limitado. Si bien, se tiene cupo para alrededor de 300 personas, previo a la llegada de integrantes de la caravana ya se contaba con “una lista de espera”. Por ello, hay quienes piensan que el recibimiento de inmigrantes será paulatino y tardío. “La espera en este momento es entre cuatro y seis semanas”, anticipa Pedro Ríos, director del Comité de Amigos Americanos en San Diego. “Ahí es donde está el detalle porque con la llegada de tantas personas es muy
probable que el número se va a doblar, y es ahí donde creo que habrá mucha frustración, pueden perder la paciencia y es donde hay riesgo de que se vean ellos con la necesidad de cruzar el muro”. El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump ya ha firmado una orden ejecutiva para prohibir de forma inmediata que los inmigrantes que entren al país de forma irregular puedan pedir asilo político. De hacerlo, éstos serían arrestados, lo que los haría inelegibles para solicitar refugio. Mientras tanto, el gobierno federal ya ha implementado el denominado Operativo Línea Segura que derivó en el despliegue de cientos de soldados para resguardar la zona entre Tijuana y San Diego. Con la llegada de las transmisiones en directo desde ubicaciones remotas al final de los años 60, la Guerra de Vietnam fue el primer conflicto armado en ser transmitido a los hogares de Estados Unidos y el mundo. Aun así, y antes de las transmisiones del reportero Walter Cronkite y una avalancha de reportajes, Aguilar no tenía referencia de cómo era la guerra antes de entrar en combate. “Yo no sabía de lo que se trata la guerra” dijo. En su servicio, Aguilar pudo ver de cerca los horrores que deja la guerra de manera cercana. El recuerda no poder dormir por días luego de ver su primer cadáver en las montañas centrales de Vietnam, donde también lidiará de las más sangrientas batallas de esta guerra. Tras recibir un balazo en el hombro mientras recataba a un compañero, Aguilar permanecio junto a su tropa en una aldea segura hasta que se le dio un mes de baja médica. Poco después, el militar regresó a la vida civil, lo cual le incomodo luego de no poder relacionarse con nadie. A pesar de esto, Aguilar resumió sus estudios en Southwestern College con excelentes calificaciones, lo que le valió un ingreso a la

Universidad de California, San Diego en el cuatrimestre de primavera de 1969. Aguilar recuerda su tiempo en la UCSD como uno muy intenso, el cual coincidio con el movimiento estudiantil contra la guerra de Vietnam y el movimiento por los derechos civiles. Como estudiante en la UCSD, Aguilar se enfocó en la creación de oportunidades educativas y dar atención a temas de derechos civiles dentro de este plantel ubicado en La Jolla. Específicamente se involucró en extender apoyo a estudiantes de ascendencia mexicana y afroamericana. Mientras Aguilar continuaba con su vida civil e ingresaba en el servicio público, las secuelas de la guerra le afectaban. Aguilar sufre de estrés postraumático y entonces también lidiaba con sus problemas con bebidas alcohólicas. Al rehusarse de ingerir altas dosis del medicamento Valium, Aguilar desarrolló un hábito de hacer ejercicio tras la recomendación de un doctor y luego dejó la bebida luego de notar que le causaba lapsos de memoria. A lo largo de su trayectoria, Aguilar ha dado su servicio en varios cargos en la ciudad. Ha actuado como director de políticas estudiantiles y temas jurídicos en su “alma mater”, donde introdujo al calendario de la Universidad de California la observancia del Día de Veteranos. El fue miembro de las mesas directivas del Distrito Escolar Sweetwater, el Distrito Southwestern Community College y del Consejo de Justicia Criminal del Condado de San Diego. Aguilar actualmente vive en Chula Vista con su esposa Pat Aguilar.

Esta tecnología me ha dado más libertad y confianza para ser una mujer ciega independiente”.

About 200 people from Chula Vista including students and their families enjoyed Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” in an intimate, up-close experience at Hilltop Middle School’s gymnasium. The Old Globe presented the play as part of the Globe for All initiative, in a partnership with South Bay Community Services, a community-based organization that provides a holistic and comprehensive array of programs and services for children, youth, and families to help them overcome challenges and succeed. “Our families really don’t go to theatre, a lot of them don’t even leave their community because of transportation,” said Patricia Chavez, director of Communications and External Affairs at South Bay Community Services. “And before the play, parents get really involved with the organization and decorations to make the play really special for their families.” Globe for All presents free professional theatre to diverse, multigenerational
audiences in locations around San Diego County, with a cast of nine professional actors and nine production staff members. For many students and their parents, this was their first live theatre experience. “To see the theatre for the first time is something you can’t never feel again, it’s something really priceless,” said South Bay resident Yudmila Guizar. Before the play began, the guests enjoyed a red carpet entrance, and a pre-theatre dinner complete with interactive games designed to enhance the understanding and enjoyment of Shakespeare’s work. Professional Globe Teaching artists introduced participants to Shakespeare, his work, and the common themes and ideas of the play. These artists also began the performance with an introductory pre-show warm up. “We are delighted to present Shakespeare’s masterpiece A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 17 community partner venues this year. Our community connections have deepened considerably since we launched Globe for All five
years ago, and we value these crucial and rewarding partnerships,” said Barry Edelstein of the Old Globe Theater. “Globe for All is inspired by two simple but deep beliefs, that theatre is an art form for everyone, and that as the flagship arts institution of San Diego (and that) The Old Globe should be accessible to the entire community. El Último Tango del 'Tuca' Ricardo Ferretti se despide como técnico de la selección mexicana enfrentado dos veces a Argentina

En menos de una semana, la selección mexicana tendrá dos oportunidades de hacer algo que no logra desde hace 14 años: ganarle un partido de futbol a Argentina. El 16 y 20 de noviembre, la escuadra Tricolor visitará al conjunto albiceleste para saldar un par de compromisos amistosos dentro de la última fecha FIFA del año. En las ciudades de Córdoba y Mendoza, México intentará ganarle un partido a Argentina, algo que no hace desde la Copa América 2004 que se efectuó en Perú. En aquella ocasión, el Tri se impuso 1-0 con anotación de Ramón Morales. Después de ese encuentro, México y Argentina se han enfrentado siete ocasiones con un saldo de cinco victorias y dos empates en favor del seleccionado sudamericano. Los encuentros en Córdoba y Mendoza serán los últimos en el interinato de Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti como
director técnico de la selección mexicana. “Aquí termina mi compromiso con la selección, lo hice con mucho gusto y con mucho honor”, dijo Ferretti en relación a su etapa final como entrenador del Tri. “Vamos a Argentina con la intención de dar dos muy buenos partidos, de jugar al más alto nivel que podamos”, aseguró el Tuca. Ferretti ya dirigió una vez a México en contra de la selección de Argentina. Eso sucedió en un partido amistoso efectuado el 8 de septiembre de 2015, que terminó con empate a dos goles, y en el que el Tuca también fungió como técnico interino del Tri. Por Argentina, ese encuentro lo dirigió Gerardo “Tata” Martino, hombre que se dice tomará las riendas de la selección mexicana a partir del próximo año. Tijuana está muy cerca de convertirse en la casa de una leyenda viviente toda vez que el nombre de Diego Armando Maradona suena fuerte para convertirse en el próximo técnico de los Xolos. El otrora astro de las canchas ha realizado un buen trabajo como estratega de los Dorados de Sinaloa y eso lo ha convertido en un candidato natural para hacerse cargo de los perros fronterizos. Dorados y Xolos pertenecen al mismo grupo empresarial por lo que la idea de que Maradona llegue a Tijuana no suena descabellada. Desde su arribo a Culiacán, Maradona ha logrado una notable mejoría en el cuadro del pez dorado e inclusive ya logró su clasificación a la Liguilla en la Liga de Asenso. Los Xolos han tenido un Torneo Apertura 2018 para el olvido y eso propició la salida del entrenador argentino, Diego Cocca. Al relevo en el banquillo rojinegro llegó el colombiano Frankie Oviedo, quien ha

sufrido dos derrotas en la misma cantidad de partidos dirigidos. La directiva de Xolos sabe que Oviedo no es la solución para que el club retome la senda el éxito por lo que ya prepara la llegada de Maradona para el próximo torneo. Los ejecutivos del club tijuanense esperan que la presencia de Maradona reactive la pasión que los seguidores del cuadro fronterizo han ido perdiendo a consecuencia de los malos resultados. Los Xolos sufrieron otro doloroso tropiezo en su encuentro de la semana pasada al caer 3-2 ante Monarcas Morelia en la cancha del Estadio Caliente. Ese resultad hizo que el equipo se quedara atorado en el lugar 15 de la tabla general con 16 puntos. La próxima semana, en la última fecha del campeonato, los Xolos visitarán al también alicaído equipo de Puebla. El equipo de Tijuana llegará a ese compromiso arrastrando una racha de seis partidos sin conocer la victoria.
SE APAGA LA VOZ DEL ESTADIO AZTECA POR LEÓN BRAVO
Murió uno de los grandes personajes en la historia del futbol mexicano. Melquiades Sánchez Orozco, el hombre que le prestó su voz al Estadio Azteca por 52 largos años, dejó de existir. En esta ocasión, quiero dedicar este espacio a revivir una entrevista que hace un par de años le hice a este hombre ejemplar. Vale la pena conocer la historia de tan singular personaje. Valga esta columna como un homenaje póstumo a Melquiades Sánchez Orozco, quien falleció a los 90 años de edad en la Ciudad de México. Por accidente se hizo locutor y sin proponérselo se convirtió en una leyenda del micrófono y del futbol. Durante 50 años, Melquiades Sánchez Orozco ha sido el anunciador oficial del Estadio Azteca. El distintivo tono agradable y formal de su voz ha acompañado a generaciones enteras que han disfrutado del futbol en el llamado Coloso de Santa Úrsula. Minutos antes de que inicie un partido, el legendario locutor hace vibrar a las masas cuando, pausada y metódicamente, recita las alineaciones de los equipos. Es a partir de ese momento que el ambiente en el estadio que ha sido escenario de dos Copas del Mundo cobra magia. “Estoy muy agradecido con lo que la vida me ha dado”, dijo Melquiades, Originario de Tepic, estado de Nayarit, Melquiades se inclinó desde muy joven por el arte de la pintura y por la electrónica. Nada hacía suponer que dedicaría su vida a los medios de comunicación, pero cuando a los 18 años de edad quedó huérfano, recibió, sin saberlo, la señal que cambiaría su destino. “Como me gustaba tanto la electrónica y además era muy curioso, un día decidí visitar la emisora de radio de mi ciudad para ver si me dejaban entrar a ver cómo funcionaba el sistema de transmisión”, recordó. Mientas esperaba para ingresar a la emisora, alguien se le acercó y le preguntó si era la persona que iba a realizar una prueba para ser el locutor de la estación. “Yo le dije que sí, pero para nada, yo no iba a eso, nunca me pasó por la cabeza ser locutor”, admitió. “Yo tenía 18 años de edad, acabada de quedar huérfano, necesitaba trabajar y pues hice la prueba a ver qué pasaba”, comentó. Lo que pasó es que en ese momento comenzó la carrera de un joven que con el tiempo se transformó en ícono del micrófono en México y en el futbol. “En ese entonces no existían escuelas de locución ni nada de esas cosas. El tono de mi voz siempre me ayudó mucho, pero mi estilo lo tuve que ir formando poco a poco”, explicó. OTRO GOLPE DE SUERTE Fue en 1946 cuando Melquiades inició su carrera en Tepic y su talento lo llevó a Guadalajara, ciudad donde trabajó como locutor, pero además, donde empezó a crecer como pintor. Compared to competitor metro areas, San Diego has the highest female unemployment rate, at 5.4 percent, and also has the second lowest percentage of women in the workforce, at 44.8 percent. These are some of the results of the 2018 Regional Jobs Strategy Dashboard by the San Diego Regional Chamber. “Understanding the potential that exists in our region is key to designing policy that creates the best environment for businesses to succeed,” said Jerry Sanders, Chamber president and CEO. “It’s our responsibility as business leaders and policy makers to recognize and capitalize on that potential and do all we can to bring as much opportunity to as many people in as many places across our county as possible.” Job creation depends on uncovering and leveraging the potential of the region, whether it’s the within the workforce or in the communities. In unique ways, San Diego has economic opportunity within the populations of veterans, millennials, women, and minorities. Similarly, potential exists to invest in commercial and housing development that
meets the community’s needs. These findings were also part of the dashboard. Key areas for opportunity as highlighted in the 2018 Jobs Strategy Dashboard Update include women. Gaps in number of women in the workforce and educational attainment should be seen as an underutilization of existing talent, and an opportunity to unlock economic potential in the region by removing barriers for women to find success in the workforce. Another opportunity is the millennial generation, as they are now the largest generation in the workforce, and they have perspectives shaped by the economic, political, and social events that occurred when they were growing up and entering the workforce. As a group, they are relatively diverse which should be seen as a strength for employers. An opportunity for this generation is that as millennials enter the workforce and advance to leadership positions, successful employers will have adapted their practices to attract and retain these younger workers by creating a purpose-driven culture. The dashboard also indicates that veterans gain many skills, traits, and attributes through their
service which are valuable in the civilian workforce. Over the past decade, young veterans have experienced greater unemployment than their non-veteran counterparts. However, in 2017, young veterans, ages 18 through 34, experienced a lower unemployment rate than their non-veteran counterparts. While the numbers seem to suggest a positive trend for the veterans and the economy in San Diego, metros like Austin and Denver have demonstrated that it is possible to reduce veteran unemployment substantially from where San Diego’s is today. The 2018 Jobs Strategy Dashboard update is designed to measure the business climate, by tracking key metrics like taxes, standard of living, and housing affordability that were identified through the original Regional Jobs Strategy Initiative. The initial effort was guided by a coalition including the County of San Diego, the City of San Diego, and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), in partnership with nearly 70 job-creating organizations throughout the entire Cali-Baja region.

Casa Cornelia Law Center announced their biggest fundraising campaign, an $8.5 million campaign to fund legal services for immigrant children, asylum seekers and victims of crime. The nonprofit law firm providing pro bono legal services to San Diego’s immigrant community kicked off the campaign at their 25th anniversary celebration event, which raised $364,000 toward the goal. Casa Cornelia Law Center (CCLC) is one of the few organizations in the region that offers pro bono attorneys in humanitarian cases and the only one that represents detained children. The fundraising campaign is to help fund the mounting need for quality representation and programs in today’s legal climate. More than 600 guests gathered at the nonprofit’s 25th anniversary celebration and raised more than $364,000 – a recordbreaking investment to kick off the campaign and support Casa Cornelia's clients. “It was heartening to celebrate Casa Cornelia’s
25th anniversary with so many who support our mission to serve victims of human rights violations,” said Ann M. Durst, co-founder of Casa Cornelia. “While we often focus on the plight of those fleeing persecution, our celebration provided an opportunity to recognize all of the good that has been accomplished over the years and thank those whose generosity made it all possible. All funds raised at the event and throughout the campaign will be critical to help create a San Diego where justice is pursued with compassion.” The immigration system in the U.S. is a complex process that affects children, women and men, particularly in San Diego. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, 3,604 family units were apprehended at the San Diego-Tijuana border, a 30-percent increase from last year. The organization’s 25th anniversary celebration awarded long-time volunteer attorneys, law firms and community members for their outstanding contributions to the immigrant community in Southern California. The celebration’s program
featured a reception, along with a keynote address from New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner, Nicholas Kristof. In order to keep families together and ensure no woman, man or child is living in fear, Casa Cornelia needs to generate significant income in the next three to five years. To meet this need, all proceeds from the 25th anniversary celebration went toward sustaining current programs and maintaining the organization’s quality of legal services. The newly-announced fundraising campaign aims to secure $8.5-million for annual operating expenses and resources, facility and equipment augmentation and the establishment of a reserve fund to ensure program stabilization for current and future emergent needs, especially in the event government funding is curtailed. The organization has already raised $5.8 million toward that goal, in part to the efforts of their anniversary event. The law includes a requirement for a local legislative body to hold a community forum annually if local law enforcement allows ICE access to any individual. “We have worked hard to make our State a place where all families are protected. We intend to raise the voices of those who the Board of Supervisors intentionally leave out,” stated Lilian Serrano, chairperson of the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium. Speakers who attended the meeting addressed a number of different issues affecting undocumented people. Serrano, who was the first speaker at the meeting, told the Board of Supervisors she was with the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium and represented 55 organizations throughout the County. Rios also shared that the group had several recommendations, one of them being changing the location, and another, “to make the future forums more accessible and inclusive,” and “held at times when more people from the public can show up and to be able to express themselves.” Rios had other recommendations including halting ICE access to all Sheriff ’s jail facilities and their databases. Mike Barnett, the undersheriff of San Diego County said, “It was only the access ICE has within County jails that is at issue.” The Sheriff ’s presentation included data that was maintained on access to ICE within County jails that was in compliance with the TRUTH Act. At the request of the California Immigrant Policy Center, the Sheriff ’s depart-
ment also conducted a manual count of ICE access by tracking several forms which revealed the following: 195 individuals consented to interviews with ICE without an attorney, 132 individuals consented to an interview with ICE, but only with their attorney present, 208 individuals declined to be interviewed by ICE, 682 individuals were notified that ICE requested their release dates, and 597 had theirs provided to ICE. In 2017 the Sheriff ’s department had over 82,000 releases processed, and of that total, approximately 1,143 individuals were released to ICE, making up approximately 1.4 percent of the total releases for 2017. Felicia Gomez, policy coordinator with the California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC), said the San Diego County Sheriff ’s Department worked with advocates to improve forms given to immigrants in County jails and made them available in different languages. The Sheriff ’s office also worked with CIPC to track the data from the forms and make it available to the organization. The forms are another new requirement from the TRUTH Act. Gomez also outlined a number of concerns, including the County Sheriff ’s posting release dates and times of individuals in jail custody on their county website. After all of the speakers spoke, Supervisor Dianne Jacob asked one question, “Since there was an allegation that the forum we held on this particular item, “Are we in compliance of with the TRUTH Act?” Thomas Montgomery, the County counsel, replied, “Yes.” Those were the only comments made in reference
to the forum from the County Board of Supervisors during the meeting. In April of this year the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to support President Trump’s lawsuit against California’s sanctuary laws. Will Johnson, a San Diego resident and the last speaker at the meeting, said, “From what I’ve seen here today, I see that the Board and the County is in violation of two California laws. The first is the TRUTH Act. This wasn’t a forum. It just wasn’t. There was a presentation given and then people got to speak during public comment that’s just a meeting. A forum means people ask questions. That didn’t happen today.”

Esa vez no tuve problemas con el sindicato y me quedé”, explicó Años después, Azcárraga compró al Club América e hizo construir el Estadio Azteca.
