U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that Form N-565, Application for Replacement of Naturalization/ Citizenship Document, and Form N-336, Request for a Hearing on a Decision in Naturalization Proceedings (Under Section 336 of the INA), can be filed online. Applicants use Form N-565 to replace a naturalization certificate, certificate of citizenship, or a repatriation certificate. They may also use it to apply for a special certificate of naturalization as a U.S. citizen to be recognized by a foreign country. Applicants use Form N-336 to request a hearing before an immigration officer if we have denied their application for naturalization. “USCIS is making the process of applying for immigration benefits more efficient, secure and convenient,” said USCIS director L. Francis Cissna. “We continue to add new forms that applicants can complete online.”

ny time his nextdoor neighbor crosses into Tijuana, Anibal seizes the opportunity to ask her to bring him medication that can be bought in Mexico without a prescription and that is allowed to be brought back into San Diego.
“I almost never get sick,” says the construction worker, who is originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, “once in a great while I may get a cold, or a stomach ache from eating too fast. Worst thing I’ve had to endure is a toothache.” He keeps his medications in a plastic container with an airtight lid: a bandage, muscle-ache cream, ointment for cuts and bruises, oxygen peroxide. In a plastic bag
inside the container, he keeps different teas as a natural cure for any ailments. “What does worry me is if I ever need to get stitches, or have surgery, because I have no money to be buying antibiotics or anything like that,” he shared. In an attempt to understand undocumented migration, Jason De Leon is leading a research project with a unique approach that explores various elements of a complicated dynamic. De Leon, professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan, is applying anthropology, forensic science, photography and archaeological tools to study migration along the U.S.-Mexico border in the Undocumented Migration Project. “One of the problems is that people don’t necessarily have a nuanced understanding of what it actually means to be a border crosser or what it is actually like,” De Leon said. “This project is really an attempt to show (sic) people, ‘look it is a very complex thing that has a lot of moving pieces to it.’” The Texas native grew up along the U.S.-Mexico border and the Rio Grande Valley before moving to Long Beach, California. He grew up surrounded by the topic of undocumented migration and border crossing, having had undocumented family members from both his mother’s and father’s side, but did not imagine he would study this social phenomenon as a trained archeologist. Una coalición de asociaciones civiles demandó esta semana a los gobiernos tanto de México como Estados Unidos que se cumpla con sus obligaciones bajo tratados de asilo político en vísperas de lo que podría ser, el arribo de otra caravana de inmigrantes centroamericanos a la frontera Durante dos días, el grupo realizó una serie de movilizaciones en distintos puntos del condado de San Diego en solidaridad con inmigrantes que salieron de su país huyendo de las condiciones de pobreza y violencia extrema que los aqueja. Miembros de la coalición hicieron un llamado al respeto del derecho de los inmigrantes a solicitar refugio a Estados Unidos, así como que se agilice el proceso en los puertos de entrada al país
para que reciban las peticiones de asilo. En más de una ocasión, autoridades de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP) han señalado que las garitas se encuentran a capacidad por lo que inmigrantes deben esperar hasta dos meses para ser atendidos por un oficial. Pero la situación podría agudizarse, dado que otras multitudinarias caravanas han partido de Honduras en dirección a los Estados Unidos, advirtieron activistas. “Aunque muchos de ellos supuestamente se van a quedar en México, es muy probable que también busquen otras oportunidades para ingresar a Estados Unidos”, consideró Pedro Ríos, director del Comité de Amigos Americanos en San Diego. Por ello y tomando en cuenta lo
acontecido con la caravana que llegó a finales del año pasado, se hizo un llamado a los dos gobiernos para resguardar a estos grupos vulnerables. “Creo que fallaron en reconocer la gran cantidad de personas que iban migrando que iban a necesitar una respuesta organizada, entre los diferentes niveles de gobierno en el caso de México y por parte de Estados Unidos, que realmente no les preocupó esas necesidades humanitarias que requerían una respuesta inmediata”, agregó Ríos. de que hay “una crisis de seguridad en la frontera”, en su insistencia por construir un nuevo muro fronterizo. “(Trump) pretende construir el muro de la vergüenza, que significa la división de nuestros pueblos”, criticó Antonio Arizaga, vicepresidente de la Alianza Internacional de Migrantes. “No se puede negar el asilo a nuestros refugiados centroamericanos”, enfatizó. La Secretaria de Seguridad Nacional, Kirstjen Nielsen adelantó que monitorean el trayecto de la caravana que recién tomó forma en la frontera de Honduras y que se dirige hacia Estados Unidos. “Para ser claros, el participar en una caravana no les brinda un estatus o tratamiento especial”, advirtió la funcionaria a través de su cuenta de Twitter.

Protests in San Ysidro Against Loss of Migrants’ Lives BY MANUEL OCAÑO
Hundreds of protesters marched through San Ysidro against the recent deaths of immigrants, especially children, while in custody or under arrest by Border Patrol. Holding signs with images of four of the most recent deaths, three children and one teen – all from Guatemala – protesters arrived at the Border Patrol offices and the ICE Detention Center. Right in front of the facility, they displayed life-size images of Jakelin Caal Maquin, the 7-year-old Guatemalan girl who died in December while in Border Patrol custody in El Paso, Texas. They also displayed images of Mariee Juárez, a Guatemalan baby who died due to a respiratory ailment after being held for six weeks at an Immigration and Border Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Texas; Felipe Alonso Gomez, an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy who died during Christmas while under Border Patrol custody in El Paso; and Claudia Patricia Gomez Gonzalez, a Guatemalan teen looking
for work to pay for her schooling, and who was killed last May when a border Patrol officer in pursuit to arrest her in Texas shot her in the head at close range. A woman who witnessed the shooting testified that the shot was unnecessary. “All of them had travelled with their parents or other relatives to the U.S. to save their lives and to look for a better life, and their dreams were shattered because they ended up in Border Patrol custody in the era of the Trump Administration,” said Pedro Rios of the American Friends Service Committee during the march. “Today, we protest not only against President Trump’s immigration policies, but also expressly against Border Patrol’s deadly practices, particularly when immigrants end up in their custody,” he added. After two children died last December while being held by Border officers, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen requested that the U.S. coast Guard medical corps assess CBP’s medical screening procedures for detainees, but stopped short of calling for
changes in their detention policy. Instead, Secretary Nielsen asked for Mexico’s help in investigating whether the children who died may have already been sick prior to crossing the border with their parents. In San Ysidro, Border Patrol staged officers by the gate in anticipation of the protesters’ arrival; however, they remained within their grounds behind an automatic gate. San Diego Police patrolled the march as they traveled from a nearby park to the Border Patrol offices. The only incident was a counter-protest by approximately seven Trump sympathizers who gathered at the site, but the police kept them away from the protesters. This was the third protest organized by the San Diego Migrant and Refugee Solidarity Coalition. There had been another march earlier in January, and one more last November, on the day that CBP temporarily shut down the San Ysidro Port of Entry to keep the migrant caravan to enter California through the facility.

SD Ban on Styrofoam Approved BY ANA GOMEZ SALCIDO
The San Diego City Council voted (6-3) to approve an ordinance to ban styrofoam (also known as expanded polystyrene foam or EPS) and place restrictions on singleuse plastics in San Diego. The measure will ban polystyrene foam products for the use of food service ware, food trays, egg cartons, and coolers in the City of San Diego. Under this ordinance, prepared food, such as that distributed through take-out menu items, may not be distributed, or available for purchase, in or on products that contain polystyrene foam. The measure would also make single-use plastics, such as straws and utensils, only available to restaurant customers by request. “By passing this measure, the Council supermajority has assured San Diego’s role as a national leader in pursuit of a safe, sustainable future and has made San Diego the largest city in California to ban Styrofoam,” said San Diego Councilmember Chris Ward, who issued the ordinance to ban styrofoam. “The negative impacts of styrofoam are permanent and threaten the health of San Diegans, wildlife, and industries critical to our region. The time has come for us to listen to community groups, non-profits, and businesses that have been advocating for this change for years and move away from styrofoam and plastics in San Diego.” San Diego joined 119 other California cities by banning polystyrene food and beverage containers, which have been blamed for poisoning fish and other marine life and damaging the health of people who eat seafood. The initiative received support by environmental groups like San Diego Coastkeeper and the San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Trump’s Manchurian Candidate Denial was Un(President)ed
T
he depth of the lows our national politics have now reached continue to baffle the mind, and would be funny in a comedy, but tragic in our reality. This week, after nearly two full years in office, President Donald Trump publicly denied that he’s been working for the Russians. Unprecedented for a U.S. President. The denial was eerily reminiscent of the movie plot of the Frank Sinatra movie "The Manchurian Candidate", where a soldier is brainwashed and programmed by a group of Communists to be an imbedded assassin that could later affect the presidency. Trump this week was responding to media reports that claim he has gone to “unprecedented lengths” to conceal details of his conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a move many national security experts say is unusual and dangerous, so it raises questions as to Trump’s true motives. Some national security experts have raised serious concerns that Trump’s actions during and since his campaign for President have been aimed at helping the Russians, either directly or indirectly. Trump’s unprecedented (yes, the title was a pun) move to shield his private discussions (seven that we know of ) even from intelligence agents is damaging on several fronts, experts claim. First, by concealing the details of the talks from the CIA and other intelligence agencies, Trump denied them the ability to compare what Putin says to his face with intelligence intercepts the CIA may have of Russia’s true intentions, making it impossible to detect if Putin is deceiving Trump. Our intelligence community
gathers valuable information from various sources, human and electronic, and can assess if Putin is trying to manipulate Trump. Trump, of course, thinks he can’t be manipulated and that he’s actually the manipulator, so he doesn’t see the danger in hiding the talks. Secret talks between Trump and Putin could also allow them to discuss topics they never want anyone to know about, like how they will deal with Syria, Iran, or North Korea. Putin has much more to gain from appearing to be influential in the political outcomes with those countries, and everything Trump has done publicly with those countries has allowed Russia to appear more engaged and important. As just one example, Trump’s sudden and seemingly reckless decision to withdraw troops from Syria will allow Russia to help determine the outcome of President Bashar al-Assad, a thug that gassed his own people to stay in power. Putin has already been Bassar al-Assad’s largest supplier of military equipment and ammunition. Trump’s unusual secrecy also raises concerns that Putin maintains some sort of undue influence over Trump, some form of kompromat or comprising information. What could that be? Some experts believe Russians may have loaned money to Trump through indirect channels, or that they have evidence of collusion during the campaign that Trump doesn’t want to be revealed. Keeping the talks secret also helps Putin appear to have more influence over the U.S. President than any other world leader, helping Putin portray an oversized characterization of himself, a move important to him and his reputation at home. Trump insisted on meeting alone with Putin where only translators were present, also creating a situa-
tion where the translators (especially the Russian) could manipulate the communications between the two leaders. No one else was there to correct the impression that each man took away from the meeting. Under normal circumstances, world leaders include key staff and advisors, even intelligence agents in meetings to gather as much information as possible from the words, manners, and even body language of the opposing side. During the one-on-one meetings, Trump went in alone but Putin most likely had the upper hand. Putin is a trained, career intelligence officer from the old KGB days that manipulated his way into an almost Csar-like control over his country. He controls their central bank and has huge influence over the largest companies, usually referred to as oligarchs because they are, in essence, state owned enterprises. Trump, on the other hand, is a decadent real estate tycoon from the 1980s that turned into a reality TV star that wishes he could be a Csarlike leader of this country. Although he claims to be a successful businessman, recent stories have detailed his enormous inheritance and series of failed deals that raise doubts as to his real world acumen. Trump has no prior government or foreign policy experience yet he sees himself as equal to or superior to Putin, a well-documented operator on the world stage. To say Trump would be out of his league is an understatement. Trump’s ego and hubris is dangerous to our country and the world. Putin has been on a mission to become ruler for life, having already served as President then Prime Minister before his current presidential term. Putin has already put legislation in motion that could result in constitu-
tional changes to allow him to stay in power for a lifetime, much like China’s President Xi recent orchestrated law changes that made him President for life. Trump may only serve two more years, or up to six if he’s re-elected, but his acquiescence to Putin could shape the course of history for years to come. Giving any aid and comfort to Putin in his continuing quest for power will come back to haunt the U.S., and our allies in vulnerable areas of the world. Putin invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea, yet Trump won’t push back. Putin has threatened Soviet satellite countries, yet Trump questions the continued existence of NATO that was created as a defense to an aggressive Russia. And on the biggest threat from Putin, direct interference in our elections, Trump still questions whether it was the Russians, and publicly accepts Putin’s denials over the assessment of our own intelligence agencies. Whether Donald Trump is a witting pawn to chessmaster Putin or he’s been compromised through financial or political gain is unknown, but there aren’t too many other explanations for the huge help Trump gives the communist regime. If Trump isn’t working for them, he’s not really work for us either. By allowing Russia to gain standing on the world stage, Trump is diminishing the foreign policy work laid since the end of World War II when the U.S. saved Russia. The Cold War was waged over Russia’s desire for an expanded political role among world superpowers through a build up of nuclear weapons and the coercion of witting partners. After three decades of decline, Putin has put them back at the main table with Trump as his wing man.

Just before the end of last year, Richard Arvin Overton, the country’s oldest World War II veteran and the third oldest man in the world, died from pneumonia. CNBC reported Overton was 112 years old. Within the last two years, Overton, the grandson of a slave, who witnessed the repeal of Jim Crow laws, the passage of the Civil Rights Act and the election of the first black president of the United States, was said to be in good health by his family. Here in San Diego, Ray Chavez, the oldest surviving U.S. veteran of the Pearl Harbor attack died in Poway last November in his sleep at the age of 106, his daughter told the San Diego Union Tribune. In March of last year, during his birthday, Chavez said his secret to long life included no alcohol or drugs. What else does it take to live to 100? Is it one’s eating habits? Or which exercises make the best sense at different ages? Which diets are the best to lose weight? What about carbohydrates? How important is fasting? Spinach or Iceberg lettuce? Sharp HealthCare is the City of San Diego’s official health and wellness partner and will provide six classes at libraries and recreation centers this year in each of the nine city council districts for a
total of 54 classes, all free of charge. The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Study of 23,000 people found that changes in lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise and tobacco use could potentially prevent 93 percent of diabetes, 81 percent of heart attacks, 50 percent of strokes and 36 percent of all cancers. For those who are not able to attend, Melissa Hughes, a registered dietitian with the Sharp Rees-Stealy Center for Health Management, offers five tips to eat well and be well. Find balance in your daily diet. Visit ChooseMyPlate.gov to see an illustration of a plate featuring the five food groups
that are the building blocks for a healthy diet: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. “When we look at our plate, we want to fill half of it with non-starchy vegetables, such as cucumbers, carrots, bell peppers and greens,” says Hughes. Familiarize yourself with fats — Fats are an important component of the diet, but they are not all created equal. Focus on incorporating healthy unsaturated fats such as nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil and fatty fish. Avoid or limit alcohol. Many adults have a daily drink, but this doesn’t make it a good idea. Alcohol is not a diet essential and can lead to injuries, health problems,
birth defects and alcohol use disorders if abused. Learn your personal risks and remember that moderation is key if you decide to decide to drink. Skip too many sweets. Limit added sugars to less than 2 tablespoons per day. Beware: a slice of cake can have 4 tablespoons of sugar; energy drinks and soda have 5 tablespoons; and even a cup of yogurt can have 2 tablespoons of the sweet stuff. Know your needs. On average, women need between 1,600 and 2,400 calories a day while men need between 2,000 and 3,000 calories. However, your age, height, lifestyle, general health and activity level can also affect your daily caloric needs. “It’s important to keep it simple,” says Hughes. “Know what’s in what you eat and drink, don’t eat when you‘re not hungry, watch portion sizes, enjoy fruits and vegetables, avoid processed foods, and drink lots of water.” If you’re not able to make that workshop, another one will be held Tuesday, February 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Pacific Beach/ Taylor Branch Library. NEW CARAVAN EXPECTED TO LEAVE HONDURAS HEADED FOR U.S. BORDER BY MANUEL OCAÑO
Close to 1,500 migrants have departed from Honduras in two separate groups headed for the U.S.-Mexico border – tentatively Tijuana – with the intention of petitioning for asylum in the U.S. The number is but a fraction of the 15,000 migrants that a Tijuana activist had assured would leave San Pedro Sula in the early hours of Jan. 15. Because of the news of the potentially 15,000-member caravan, President Trump said during his visit to the Texas border that “a new, even larger is being formed in Honduras, larger than anything we’ve seen.” However, only about 600 people left from San Pedro Sula and 900 more from other regions to meet up at the border with Guatemala and from there head north through Mexico towards the U.S. southern border, according to reporting received from Honduras through messaging app
WhatsApp. Although it is only onetenth of the migrants heralded by the Tijuana activist, the Trump Administration took advantage of the news to decide to extend the deployment of 1,800 troops to San Diego and 3,800 more to the rest of the border until the end of September. President Trump, now in the fourth week of the government shutdown to pressure for funding for a border wall across the southern border, tweeted that “a big new Caravan is heading up to our southern border from Honduras… Only a Wall will work. Only a Wall, or Steel Barrier, will keep our Country safe!” On the other hand, part of the caravan may also be stopped by both the Honduran government, which has warned that they will be checking that caravan members have current passports and visas, as well as the Mexican government, which has announced a new program that would make it
attractive for Central American migrants to remain in Mexico. Mexico’s Federal Civil Protection Director David Leon stated via phone that migrants entering Mexico would be offered employment in the country’s southern states through a program called “Cortinas de Prosperidad (Prosperity Screens)”. The plan consists of
employment offers for both Mexican and Central American men and women in several development infrastructure projects. Applicants will be able to work in the construction, maintenance and operation of the Tren Maya (Mayan Train), the largest infrastructure project in Mexico in 3 decades, as well as the construction of a refinery in the state of Tabasco and the

The San Diego Travel and Adventure Show is scheduled to return in its sixth edition to the San Diego Convention Center on Jan. 19 and 20 with a variety of brand new interactive experiences, celebrity speakers and first-time exhibitors. The San Diego Travel and Adventure Show provides its visitors with the ultimate destination to find, plan and book their next vacation. Thousands of travel destina-

The third project migrants could participate in is the construction of the TransIsthmus Rail Line, a project that could compete with the Panama Canal by connecting the Coatzacoalcos ports in the Gulf of Mexico to the Salina Cruz Port in the Pacific. Leon stated that with the “Prosperity Screen” projects,
which could employ as many as 100,000 people, Central American migrants could find security and permanent, well-paid jobs in Mexico, precisely the things migrants leaving Honduras, Guatemala and el Salvador say they leave their countries in search of. The projects also offer two additional perks: since the migrants would be working for the Federal Government, they would receive health insurance and other benefits, plus, they would be working in a region in Mexico that has strong cultural, business, and even family ties with Central America. There will still be those migrants who will prefer to continue on to the U.S. border to petition for asylum. In their case, Tonatiuh Guillen, Mexico’s National Immigration Institute director, has stated that they would be welcome in Mexico, so long as they

The method for this new study by EClinicalMedicine used population based data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study on 10,904 14 year olds. Multivariate regression and path models were used to examine associations between social media use and depressive symptoms. The magnitude of association between social media use and depressive symptoms was larger for girls than for boys. Compared
with one to three hours of daily use: three to less than five hours has a 26 percent increase in scores versus 21 percent; more than five hours 50 percent versus 35 percent for girls and boys respectively. Greater social media use related to online harassment, poor sleep, low self-esteem and poor body image; in turn these related to higher depressive symptom scores. Multiple potential intervening pathways were apparent, for example: greater hours social media use related to body weight dissatisfaction,
which in turn linked to depressive symptom scores directly and indirectly via self-esteem. The study says that girls reported more hours of social media use than did boys. Over two fifths of girls used social media for three or more hours per day compared with one fifth of boys, and only 4 percent of girls reported not using social media compared to 10 percent of boys. Compared with boys, girls were more likely to be involved in online harassment as a victim or perpetrator (38.7

anthropology from Penn State University and earned his bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of California in Los Angeles. For De Leon, the interest in studying undocumented migration grew while he was completing research in Mexico where he began to learn more about the stories of undocumented migrants and the often traumatic experiences they face while attempting to cross the border. Undocumented Migration Project consists of applying different sciences and archaeological skills to study the sites migrants go through and the items they leave behind and treating those items as object of historical value. He works with students in the Arizona desert and Chiapas, Mexico, to find objects, interview migrants and document the stories of those who have crossed the border. De Leon said that often the stories of migrants like those of European migrants who arrived in Ellis Island, an immigration station in New York, in the late 1800s who suffered discrimination, exploitation, and mistreatment, are romanticized years later. He does not find undocumented migration romantic. “This project is to say, ‘look there’s nothing romantic about the immigration experience because it is so difficult,’” De Leon said. “People are migrating because they’re trying to improve their lives and they are coming from very difficult situations and potentially going into more difficult situations.”
He said with this project he wanted to show the importance of those experiences and demonstrate that Latinos have a history that is a part of American history especially with the “demonizing” of Latinos from the current president of the United States. “In this political climate, we need people to feel that their stories are important,” De Leon said. Stories, which he says, some immigrants choose not to share with close ones. He admits that even as a Latino he had a simplistic understanding of undocumented migration and border crossing but the Undocumented Migration Project has allowed him to explore those stories and share them with others. Forensic science is also used to understand what happens to the people who die in the desert. “We’re trying to use as many tools as possible to improve our understanding of all of the things that go into this social process,” De Leon said. De Leon was recently named a 2017 MacArthur Fellow recipient by the independent organization for his work but he said it is not only a recognition of the work but of the value of the stories. “It’s not my job to make people love or hate immigrants because I think that is something that you have in your heart most of the time,” De Leon said. “Really we wanted to give people some more information so that they understand what (undocumented migration) really means.”

Girls were more likely to report fewer hours of sleep compared with boys (less than 7 hours 13.4 percent versus 10.8 percent) and to report experiencing disrupted sleep often (27.6
percent versus 20.2 percent) or most of the time (12.7 percent versus 7.4 percent) but were similar in reporting how long it took them to fall asleep. The study findings highlight the potential pitfalls of lengthy social media use for young people's mental health. Findings are highly relevant for the development of guidelines for the safe use of social media and calls on industry to more tightly regulate hours of social media use.

Gobernador de California Quiere Servicios de Salud para Todos, Incluidos los Indocumentados POR MANUEL OCAÑO

níbal aprovecha cada vez que su vecina cruza la frontera para pedirle que le traiga medicinas que se venden en México sin receta y que no están prohibidas al regresar al condado de San Diego. “Casi nunca me enfermo; por allá muy de vez en cuando me da un catarro, o un dolor de estómago por comer a la carrera; lo peor que he tenido que aguantar es dolor de muela”, dijo el trabajador de construcción originario de Oaxaca. En una caja de plástico con tapa hermética guarda sus medicamentos, una venda, crema para dolor muscular y para cortadas, agua oxigenada. En una bolsa de plástico guarda dentro de la caja diferentes tés para curarse naturalmente cualquier molestia. “Lo que sí me preocupa es que un día llegue a necesitar que un médico me tenga que coser, o que me operen, porque ni tengo (dinero) para andar comprando antibióticos ni cosas así”, explicó. Dice que hace unos meses al cargar un mueble, se golpeó
contra el marco de una puerta y el pulgar derecho se le hinchó y se le puso morado oscuro. Fue a una clínica, le perforaron con una aguja caliente y le recetaron antibióticos y analgésicos que nunca compró porque el dinero no le alcanzó. “Me curé nada más con alcohol y me vendé, haz de cuenta que me entablillé, para no faltar a trabajar”. Cuando él falla al trabajo, tampoco su jefe puede acudir. Aníbal es uno de 138,000 indocumentados en California mayores de 19 años que podrían beneficiarse con la decisión del gobernador Gavin Newsom de ser pronto el primer estado que ofrezca servicios de salud para todos sus residentes, incluidos los que viven aquí de manera indocumentada. El estado ya ofrece servicios a los indocumentados menores de 19 años sin tocar fondos federales que prohíben servicios a quienes se encuentran en situación migratoria irregular en el país. Ahora el gobernador, en cumplimiento en una de sus promesas de campaña, decidió

mayores, o el que garantiza atención médica para madres y bebés, comienzan a relacionarse entre sí para ofrecer el mercado unificado a las aseguradoras. En respuesta a por qué incluye en salud a los indocumentados, el gobernador Newsom dijo que así tendrá salud la fuerza laboral de California, y una comunidad que aporta a la economía estatal. Por lo menos uno de cada diez trabajadores en el estado es indocumentado, y en California vive al menos uno de cada cuatro beneficiarios de DACA en el país. Hay otros estados que ya ofrecen cobertura médica a todos sus residentes, pero California se perfila para ser el primero que cubra literalmente a todos, incluidos los indocumentados. Mediante el plan del gobernador Newsom, tendrán subsidio los individuos que ganen menos de 72,000 dólares al año, o las familias de hasta cuatro miembros que ganen menos de 150,000 dólares anuales. Aunque se trata solo de una décima parte de los migrantes que anunció la activista de Tijuana, la administración Trump aprovechó para decidir que el despliegue de 1,800 soldados en San Diego y otros 3,800 en el resto de la frontera continuará hasta finales de septiembre. El presidente Trump, en la cuarta semana de cierre de gobierno para presionar por fondos para la construcción del muro fronterizo, declaró que “una gran caravana se dirige a nuestra frontera sur desde Honduras… solo un muro funcionará, solo un muro de metal mantendrá seguro nuestro país”. Pero también podría detener parcialmente a la caravana tanto el gobierno de Honduras que advirtió que pedirá pasaporte vigente y visas a quienes vayan en la caravana, como el gobierno de México, que anunció un nuevo programa para hacer atractiva la estadía de los centroamericanos en territorio mexicano. El director de Protección Civil federal del gobierno de México, David León, dijo telefónicamente que ahora los migrantes que ingresen a México tendrán ofertas de trabajo en los estados del sur del país mediante un programa denominado “cortinas de prosperidad”. El plan consiste en ofertas de empleo tanto a mexicanos como a centroamericanos, hombre y mujeres, para que participen en varios proyectos de infraestructura de desarrollo. Quienes acepten, podrán trabajar en la construcción, mantenimiento y fase operacional del Tren Maya, la mayor obra de infraestructura en tres décadas en México; también encontrarían trabajo en la construcción de una refinería en Tabasco y optimización de otras seis refinerías. El tercer proyecto al que se invitará a los migrantes es la
ampliar la cobertura de migrantes hasta los 26 años y que nadie, documentado o indocumentado carezca de servicios de salud accesibles. Newsom ordenó que los distintos programas de salud del estado de California presenten una oferta unificada a las aseguradoras para que proporcionen servicios a mejor costo a los residentes, un proyecto parecido a la reforma de salud del presidente Barack Obama, que se conoce como Obamacare. El gobernador dice que, con más de 29 millones de residentes, el estado representa un mercado que las aseguradoras querrán conseguir mediante ofertas de precios de cobertura a comunidades enteras. Mientras que, por otro lado, “usaremos nuestro poder adquisitivo y nuestro poder moral para exigir precios más justos para los medicamentos que requieren receta”, dijo el gobernador. Desde ahora programas que han operado por separado, como los servicios de salud para personas de bajos ingresos, el programa de atención a la salud para adultos

El proyecto tiene dos ventajas adicionales, al trabajar para el gobierno federal, los migrantes tendrán ventajas como servicios de salud; al mismo tiempo trabajarían en una región de México con fuertes lazos culturales, comerciales y hasta familiares con Centroamérica. Pero habrá grupos de migrantes que prefieran intentar encontrar asilo en Estados Unidos. Para ellos, el director del Instituto Nacional de Migración, Tonatiuh Guillén, declaró que serán bienvenidos a México siempre y cuando su ingreso sea legal y ordenado. La secretaria de Gobernación, Olga Sánchez, explicó que se permitiría el ingreso de unos 300 migrantes a la vez. Nadie se atribuyó la convocatoria para esta tercera caravana desde Honduras. Los migrantes se guiaron por un mensaje divulgado en redes sociales que aseguraba que “Buscamos refugio. En Honduras nos matan”. Un diario hondureño atribuyó la formación de la caravana a la organización Pueblo Sin Fronteras, pero el grupo negó su participación. Mientras tanto en Tijuana permanecen aún poco menos de mil 500 centroamericanos de la anterior caravana.
USCIS Expande sus Servicios por Internet POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO
El Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció hoy que el Formulario N-565, Solicitud de Reemplazo de Documento de Naturalización/ Ciudadanía, y el Formulario N-336, Solicitud de Audiencia sobre una Decisión en los Procedimientos de Naturalización (bajo la Sección 336 de la Ley de Inmigración y Nacionalidad), pueden presentarse en línea. Los solicitantes usan el Formulario N-565 para reemplazar un certificado de naturalización, certificado de ciudadanía, o un certificado de repatriación. También pueden utilizarlo para solicitar un certificado especial de naturalización como ciudadano estadounidense para ser reconocido por un país extranjero. Los solicitantes usan el Formulario N-336 para pedir una audiencia ante un oficial de inmigración si se les ha denegado su solicitud de naturalización. “USCIS está haciendo el proceso de solicitud de beneficios de inmigración más eficiente, seguro y conveniente,” dijo L. Francis Cissna, director de USCIS. “Continuamos añadiendo nuevos formularios que los solicitantes pueden completar en línea”. Estos son el tercer y cuarto formulario que los solicitantes pueden presentar por internet a través de sus cuentas en línea. Presentamos el primero, Formulario I-90, Solicitud para Reemplazar la Tarjeta de Residente Permanente, en marzo de 2015; el segundo, el Formulario N-400, Solicitud de Naturalización, en agosto de 2016; y comenzamos a promocionar activamente la presentación electrónica de este formulario en diciembre de 2017. Emma no es un oficial de USCIS detrás de una computadora, pero ofrece información importante y responde a las preguntas más frecuentes en el sitio. “La meta final es mostrar la información de manera fácil, y que cualquier persona pueda ver su caso”, agregó Upson. “Los migrantes ahora tienen mucho acceso a nuestro portal de Internet y ya no es necesario venir a las oficinas, y esto no significa que nuestras puertas están cerradas para ellos sino que ahora ya tienen más acceso a servicios por Internet”. Además, el cierre del gobierno federal actual en Estados Unidos no afecta en las actividades de los servicios de paga realizados por USCIS. Jason De León COMPARTIENDO LAS HISTORIAS DE LOS INMIGRANTES

En un intento por comprender la migración indocumentada, Jason De León lidera un proyecto de investigación con un enfoque único que explora varios elementos de una dinámica complicada. De León, profesor de antropología en la Universidad de Michigan, está aplicando antropología, ciencia forense, fotografía y herramientas arqueológicas para estudiar la migración a lo largo de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México en el Proyecto de Migración Indocumentada. “Uno de los problemas es que las personas no necesariamente tienen una comprensión de lo que realmente significa ser una persona que cruza la frontera o cómo es en realidad”, dijo De León. “Este proyecto es realmente un intento de mostrar (sic) a la gente, ‘mira es una cosa muy compleja que tiene muchas piezas en movimiento’”. Originario de Texas, De León creció a lo largo de la frontera entre los Estados Unidos y México y el Valle del Río Grande antes de mudarse a Long Beach, California. De León creció rodeado por el tema de la migración indocumentada y el cruce fronterizo al tener familiares indocumentados tanto del lado de su madre como de su padre, pero no imaginó que lo estudiaría como arqueólogo. De León tiene un doctorado en antropología de la Universidad Estatal de Pensilvania y obtuvo su licenciatura en antropología de la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles. Para De León, el interés en estudiar la migración indocumentada creció mientras completaba una investigación en México, donde comenzó a aprender más sobre las historias de migrantes indocumentados y las experiencias a menudo traumáticas que enfrentan cuando intentan cruzar la frontera. El Proyecto de Migración Indocumentada consiste en aplicar diferentes ciencias y habilidades arqueológicas para estudiar los sitios por los que pasan los migrantes y los artículos que dejan atrás y tratarlos como objetos de valor histórico. De León Trabaja con estudiantes en el desierto de Arizona y en Chiapas, México, para encontrar objetos, entrevistar a migrantes y documentar las historias de aquellos que han cruzado la frontera. De León dijo que a menudo las historias de inmigrantes como las de los inmigrantes europeos que llegaron a Ellis Island, una estación de inmigración en Nueva York, a fines del siglo 1800 que sufrieron discriminación, explotación y maltrato, son idealizadas años más tarde. We introduced the second, Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, in Aug. 2016, and began heavily promoting online filing for the form in Dec. 2017. We are using innovation and technology to continually meet the needs of our applicants, employees and stakeholders. “Our website is one of the most visited of all federal agencies in the U.S. we have approximately 12 million unique visits each month, and we have renewed our website put in online our
most solicited services right in the main page,” said USCIS public affairs officer Maria Elena Upson to La Prensa San Diego. “Visitors now have access to breaking news, for example, if there is a closure in any USCIS office. Visitors can also have access to the most looked up tools like how the citizenship process works.” The USCIS website offers information available in Spanish, although all filings are in English. There is also a virtual assistant called Emma, available at this federal agency website. Emma is not an officer behind a computer, but it gives out important information and helps answer the most frequented questions.
“Our final goal is to show information in an easy way, and that anyone can see the process of their case,” Upson added. “Migrants now have a lot of access in our website, they don’t need to go to our offices anymore, and it doesn’t mean that our doors are closed for them, it means that they now have more online access.” Also, the current government shutdown doesn’t affect the fee-for-service activities performed by USCIS. Protestan por Muertes de Migrantes POR MANUEL OCAÑO
Centenares de manifestantes marcharon en San Ysidro en protesta por muertes de migrantes, especialmente de menores de edad, bajo custodia o arresto de patrulleros fronterizos recientemente. Tras retablos con imágenes de cuatro de las fatalidades más recientes, tres niños y una adolescente, todos guatemaltecos, los manifestantes llegaron hasta la entrada al cuartel y centro de detenciones de la patrulla fronteriza en San Ysidro. Colocaron en ese ingreso las imágenes en tamaño real de Jakelin Caal Maquin, una niña guatemalteca de siete años que pereció en diciembre bajo custodia de la Patrulla Fronteriza de El Paso. También la imagen de Mariee Juárez, una bebé también guatemalteca que pereció por afección respiratoria tres seis semanas de detención bajo custodia de la oficina de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) en Texas; Felipe Alonso Gómez, niño guatemalteco de ocho años de edad que murió bajo custodia de la patrulla fronteriza de El Paso en plena navidad; y Claudia Patricia Gómez González, una adolescente guatemalteca que
buscaba trabajo para pagar sus estudios, y a quien en mayo pasado un patrullero fronterizo que la seguía para arrestarla en Texas le disparó a corta distancia a la cabeza, ante una mujer que testificó que el disparo fue innecesario. “Todos ellos venían con sus padres o un familiar a Estados Unidos para salvar sus vidas y para tener un mejor nivel de vida, y sus sueños quedaron sin cumplirse porque quedaron bajo custodia de la patrulla fronteriza en esta etapa de la administración de Donald Trump”, declaró en la marcha Pedro Ríos, del Proyecto Fronterizo del Comité de Servicios Amigos Americanos. “En esta ocasión, protestamos no solamente contras las políticas de migración del presidente Trump, sino muy particularmente contra las prácticas mortales de la Patrulla Fronteriza, sobre todo cuando los migrantes quedan bajo su custodia”, agregó. Luego de que en diciembre pasado perecieron dos menores en manos de oficiales fronterizos, la secretaria de Seguridad, Kirstjen Nielsen, pidió al servicio de Guardacostas que revise el sistema de salud a detenidos de la oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP)
de la que depende la patrulla, pero sin ordenar cambios en la política de detención. Más bien la secretaria informó que solicitó a México ayuda para determinar si los niños que fallecieron se habían enfermado antes de cruzar la frontera con sus padres. En San Ysidro la patrulla desplegó oficiales a su entrada ante la llegada de los manifestantes, pero permaneció tras un portal automático sin salir a la calle. La policía de San Diego se encargó de vigilar la manifestación en su recorrido desde un parque cercano al cuartel de la patrulla. El único incidente fue que un grupo de unos siete simpatizantes del presidente Trump se presentó para tratar de contra protestar en el mismo sitio, pero la policía impidió que se aproximara al otro contingente. La protesta contra la patrulla fue la tercera manifestación de la Coalición de Solidaridad de San Diego con los Migrantes y Refugiados. Realizaron dos marchas en enero y una en noviembre, el día que las autoridades cerraron la garita de San Ysidro preventivamente para impedir que migrantes de la caravana ingresaran por esa ruta a California.

LA DISTRIBUCIÓN POR FRANCISCO BARBOSA
En el modelo económico más elemental, la ecuación debe, o por lo menos intentar, equilibrar la producción con la distribución, es decir que la oferta sea igual a la demanda. La producción se corresponde con la satisfacción de las necesidades del consumidor. En sistemas autoritarios, el estado decide que producir, en economías de mercado es a través del análisis del comportamiento de los agentes económicos como se decide que se va a producir en la lógica de maximizar beneficios. La distribución, en sistemas socialistas también se la reserva el estado que decide qué, cómo y cuándo se consume sobre la supuesta lógica política de privilegiar y proteger a las mayorías. En los sistemas capitalistas es la capacidad adquisitiva la que regula que se vende y a quién. Es el consumidor en su decisión personalísima quien decide si adquiere o no lo que se ofrece en las vitrinas. En la pirámide de las necesidades se busca satisfacer las básicas antes que las suntuarias. Pero el ejercicio académico no resulta en la vida real. El productor y el consumidor actúan ambos de maneras muy complejas. En las escuelas de economía es materia central de estudio. Hoy todavía no se tienen respuestas definitivas, las teorías van cambiando según las circunstancias. El índice de confianza del consumidor
es el indicador clave del comportamiento en las economías nacionales. Por lo tanto es deber de las autoridades gubernamentales estar atentos a los escenarios cambiantes para, en el marco de sus responsabilidades y obligaciones, armonizar y promover el desarrollo económico y social a fin de que se instauren las mejores políticas públicas de coadyuvancia y regulación, orientando a los productores y a los consumidores sobre las mejores opciones, e interviniendo cuando se presenten desajustes e irregularidades como las prácticas monopólicas. Ni que decir cuando por razones criminales se intenta afectar los intereses de la sociedad y los individuos. El nuevo gobierno debería saber y dominar esas lecciones y reglas básicas de la economía nacional. Pero, sorpresa, el señor presidente y sus imberbes e inexpertos colaboradores las ignoran y como aves de tempestad azuzan a los consumidores a realizar medidas absurdas, desesperadas y riesgosas como las que generan compras de pánico por temor al desabasto. López Obrador se ha dado un tiro en el pie (o en la cabeza), l haber tomado medidas equivocadas y simplistas para cumplir una oferta de campaña. Es cierto que el robo de los combustibles, también llamado “huachicoleo” es un crimen contra la sociedad y los recursos públicos y que OPINIÓN EN LA PAGINA 11
Prohíben el Uso del Unicel POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO
El Cabildo de San Diego aprobó con seis votos una iniciativa para prohibir el uso de los productos de unicel (también conocido como poliestireno o styrofoam) y restringir el uso de plásticos desechables en San Diego. La medida aprobada prohíbe el uso de productos de unicel como contenedores de comida, empaques de huevos, hieleras y hasta juguetes en los restaurantes y comercios dentro de los límites de la ciudad de San Diego. Bajo esta medida, los alimentos preparados que son anunciados como comida para llevar en menús de restaurantes, no pueden ser distribuidos sin son puestos en contenedores de unicel. La iniciativa también indica que los productos de plástico desechable como popotes y utensilios, solo deberán de estar disponible a petición de los comensales en todos los restaurantes. “Al aprobar esta medida, la mayoría de Cabildo ha asegurado el rol de San Diego como líder nacional en la búsqueda de un futuro sustentable y ha hecho que San Diego sea la ciudad más grande en todo California en prohibir el uso de productos de unicel”, dijo Chris Ward, regidor representante del distrito tres de San Diego y creador de la iniciativa. “Los

El Show de Viajes y Aventuras de San Diego regresará al Centro de Convenciones de San Diego en su sexta edición del 19 al 20 de enero, con una variedad de nuevas experiencias interactivas, celebridades y expositores. El Show de Viajes y Aventuras de San Diego proporciona a sus visitantes el mejor destino para encontrar, planificar y reservar sus próximas vacaciones. here’s a waiting room inside the South Coast Plaza Macy’s personal stylist department, and on one of the dressing rooms there’s a sign that reads “Ken’s appointment.” La Prensa San Diego’s art director Tracy Powell spent the early afternoon with Kenneth Marshall, Macy’s My Stylist, to find the right clothes for his needs. Dressed in a suit with a bowtie, Marshall says his interest in fashion began at an early age. He specifically recalls a childhood memory of his mother getting his clothes tailor-made. “It’s just always been in my blood,” he says. Marshall started working for Macy’s in 2004 and began in the women's shoe department where he worked his way up to becoming a stylist for both men and women. A sense of fashion is certainly needed in this kind of career, but a passion for styling is also a big factor. Marshall takes it to another level with Macy’s by working with local nonprofits and churches on educational seminars on dressing for success. And while styling can be intimidating for some people, it’s really a matter of having a little bit of help. So, how can people go about finding a stylist? Well, Marshall recommends Macy’s complementary stylist service because there is no pressure to purchase items. Macy’s personal stylist department, My Stylist, is available in most stores and clients can book an appointment online or call. And, what should people look to learn from their stylist experience? Marshall says it depends on what the individual is looking for in their wardrobe because some people are concerned with sizing and others are simply looking for an outfit for a special occasion. Marshall picked out three outfits for Powell, two of which are definitely outfits

that he would have never picked out himself, he shares. “ I have always considered myself to be fashionable person with a distinctive style and color scheme,” says Powell. “Ken took me out of my comfort zone and chose items I would normally pass up." Marshall says that’s a common reaction from people but in the end he always reminds clients to dress in what feels comfortable or most like themselves. “If you feel subconscious putting it on, you’re going to feel subconscious in it,” says Marshall, “so, just buy what you love.” Marshall selected outfits for Powell and even explained why sizing is important and how that can shape the overall look of the outfit. While most people think they have to splurge on something expensive, Marshall says the fit is what’s most important when it come to styling. “You find your fit, you find your suit,” says Marshall. “You can buy a $15,000 suit, but if it doesn’t drape on you properly, it’s just a suit.” To schedule an appointment with a personal stylist visit macys.com/mystylist or call 1-800-343-0121. Los Xolos de Tijuana han caído en una de sus etapas más tristes desde que ascendieron a la Primera División de la Liga MX. La escuadra fronteriza no clasificó a la Liguilla del semestre pasado y el arranque de la actual temporada ha sido desastroso. El club tijuanense ha caído en sus dos primeros compromisos del Torneo Clausura 2019 y todavía no sabe lo que es celebrar un gol bajo el mando del técnico colombiano Óscar Pareja. La semana pasada, los Xolos dieron una penosa exhibición al caer 3-0 ante los Tigres de la Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo León en el Estadio Caliente. Por octava temporada consecutiva, el equipo que dirige Bill Belichick disputará el juego por el campeonato de la Conferencia Americana de la NFL. Nunca antes un equipo había llegado tantas veces seguidas a la antesala del Super Bowl y es por eso que la franquicia de los Patriots debe de ser considerad una dinastía en la historia del deporte. “Muchos creían que nuestro tiempo se había acabado, muchos creían que ya no podíamos ganar”, dijo el mariscal de campo de Nueva Inglaterra, Tom Brady. A CALLAR SE HA DICHO POR LEÓN BRAVO
Vaya, ya era hora que alguien lo pusiera en su lugar. Misógino por convicción y déspota por tradición, José Ramón Fernández encontró la horma de su zapato cuando menos lo esperaba. En el programa del noveno aniversario de Los Capitanes, el veterano conductor de televisión fue confrontado por una compañera de trabajo, que por su edad, podría ser su nieta. Durante la emisión, José Ramón subrayó el esfuerzo de varios colaboradores que han hecho de Los Capitanes un referente dentro de las plataformas de ESPN Deportes. Al realizar el recorrido por su enmarañada memoria, el periodista recordó a las mujeres que han sido parte del programa a través de los años. “Hoy tenemos a tres de ellas aquí con nosotros”, dijo José Ramón para hacer notar la presencia de Kari Correa, Miroslava, y la actual presentadora de Los Capitanes, Rebeca Landeros. “Muy bien, vamos al otro lado del estudio donde están Kari, Miroslava y Rebeca. Ahí se las dejo para que ustedes escojan a la que más les guste”, comentó José Ramón viendo directamente a la cámara. Las misóginas palabras de José Ramón, causaron la risa nerviosa de Kari y Misroslava, pero fue Rebeca la que puso las cosas en su lugar. “No señor, no señor, nos presentaste como si fuéramos un menú y eso no está bien José Ramón”, dijo Rebeca en tono firme y con la voz en todo lo alto para que no existiera duda de su inconformidad. José Ramón Fernández es un icono de la comunicación deportiva por ser la voz que señala y fustiga las corruptelas que rodean al futbol mexicano. El profesionalismo e importancia de José Ramón en los medios de comunicación no se discute, pero su personalidad siempre ha estado en tela de juicio. Cuando fue director de Deportes de Imevisión, después TV Azteca, José Ramón siempre se mostró reacio a tener mujeres en su equipo de trabajo. No creía en la capacidad de las mujeres para incursionar en el mundo de los deportes, un mundo dominado por hombres. Son varias las mujeres que han expresado lo difícil que les fue escalar puestos en TV Azteca cuando José Ramón trabajaba ahí. Proyectos que él les saboteaba, obstáculos que él les presentaba y un trato hostil, era lo que las mujeres se encontraban cuando trataban de incursionar en el terreno profesional de José Ramón. Las cosas han cambiado y la sociedad ha evolucionado, tanto así que ahora son las mujeres las figuras más representativas en la pantalla de ESPN Deportes. Tuvo que ser una de esas jóvenes las que por fin le pusiera un alto al maltrato de un hombre que siempre ha visto a las mujeres como seres de segunda clase.

Anibal is one of 138,000 undocumented 19+ year-old adults in California who could benefit from Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to make California the first state in the U.S. to offer healthcare coverage for all its residents, regardless of immigration status. California already provides coverage for undocumented immigrants under 19 without using federal funds, which prohibit providing coverage to undocumented immigrants. Governor Newsom is now making good on his campaign promise to extend coverage for Medi-Cal beneficiaries by allowing young adults to remain on their parents’ plans until they are 26, and for everyone to have access to affordable care, regardless of immigration status. Newsom also signed an Executive Order directing California health agencies to negotiate collectively with insurance companies so they will offer more affordable services to residents, in similar manner as Obama’s Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. The governor feels that, with more than 29 million residents, California is a market insurance companies will vie for by offering competitive coverage prices to whole communities. “We will use our market power and our moral power to demand fairer prices for prescription drugs,” added the Governor. Moving forward, programs that had negotiated pricing alone, such as healthcare services for low-income persons, senior care programs, and women and children’s services will come together so they can negotiate as a single market. When asked why he is extending coverage to undocumented immigrants, Governor Newsom said that this will enable California to have a healthy workforce, and a community that contributes to the state’s economy. At least one out of every ten workers in California is undocumented, and the state is home to at least one in four DACA recipients. While other states already offer healthcare for all, California would be the first to offer coverage to literally all, including undocumented residents. Governor Newsom’s plan will provide financial assistance to individuals earning up to $72,840, and families of four earning up to $150,600. It will also impose fine on those who fail to enroll in a healthcare program.

Redes Sociales Peores para Niñas POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO
La magnitud de la asociación entre el uso de las redes sociales y los síntomas depresivos fue mayor para las niñas que para los niños, de acuerdo a un nuevo estudio. Hay evidencia que sugiere que el uso de las redes sociales está asociado con la salud mental en los jóvenes, pero los procesos subyacentes no se comprenden bien. El nuevo estudio evalúa si el uso de las redes sociales está asociado con los síntomas depresivos de los adolescentes e investiga múltiples vías explicativas potenciales a través del acoso por internet, el sueño, la autoestima y la imagen corporal. El método para este nuevo estudio de EClinicalMedicine utilizó la base de datos del Estudio de la Población Milenaria del Reino Unido en 10,904 jóvenes con 14 años. Se observaron múltiples vías de intervención potenciales, por ejemplo: mayores horas de uso de las redes sociales relacionadas con la insatisfacción con el peso corporal, lo que a su vez se vinculó con las puntuaciones de los síntomas depresivos directa e indirectamente a través de la autoestima. El estudio indica que las niñas usan más las redes sociales que los niños. Más de dos quintas partes de las niñas usaron las redes sociales durante tres horas o más por día en comparación con una quinta parte de los niños, y solo 4 por ciento de las niñas reportó no usar las redes sociales a comparación del 10 por ciento de los niños. A comparación de los niños, las
niñas tienden más a estar involucradas en el acoso en Internet ya sea como víctima o agresores (38.7 por ciento a comparación del 25.1 por ciento, respectivamente). Las niñas son más propensas a tener baja autoestima (12.8 por ciento versus 8.9 por ciento), a tener insatisfacción con su imagen corporal (78.2 por ciento versus 68.3 por ciento) y a ser menos felices con su apariencia (15.4 por ciento versus 11.8 por ciento). Las niñas fueron más propensas a reportar menos horas de dormir a comparación de los niños (menos de siete horas el 13.4 por ciento versus 10.8 por ciento) y también las niñas fueron más propensas a tener interrupciones en su sueño seguido (27.6 por ciento versus 20.2 por ciento) o interrupciones en su sueño casi todo el tiempo (12.7 por ciento versus 7.4 por ciento) pero ambos sexos reportaron que les toma el mismo tiempo en dormirse.
