nder a hot sun last Sunday, a group of protestors marched through the streets of Nestor calling for justice and accountability from the police. The march and a rally that followed were organized by the family of Raul Rivera, who suffered from mental illness and was fatally shot by police back in May of this year. A statement from the San Diego Police Department said he allegedly refused to drop a knife when confronted by police. Rivera’s family has raised questions about Raul’s death. They believe police officers could have prevented it. An investigation is underway. The march began on the very streets where Rivera was killed. Raul’s sister Flora Rivera was among the first to speak at the rally. “There’s nothing worse than to lose a family member like that,” she said. S BREWING UP BUSINESS BY MARIO A. CORTEZ When David Favela, CEO of Border X Brewing, decided to start a family business, he did this looking for a way to keep in touch with his relatives. Before becoming involved in beer, Favela’s work with Hewlett-Packard took him on long business trips. Meanwhile, his brother, an engineer with Solar Turbine, and his nephews, Sony employees at the time, remained busy with their own projects. “Corporate life was taking us in opposite directions and we only ever got together every so often like for a barbecue or for a special family event,” Favela recalled. At the time, Marcel and Martin, Favela’s nephews, were already making their own classic-style beers such as Irish reds and Scottish ales as a hobby. “My nephews love beer, they brewed at home in a very sophisticated way but were making less than a barrel at a time,” Favela said. One day, Favela casually mentioned that Marcel and Martin should make some beers inspired by Mexican culture. “From there, they went out and made a beer using Mexican hibiscus water as a base,” Favela recalled. That first experiment yielded what is now Border X’s Blood Saison beer, a style which uses belgian beer yeasts to bring PROFILE ON PAGE 7

Recent reports have put the number of remaining vaquita, a porpoise endemic to the waters of Mexico’s Gulf of California, at 30 while others report fewer than 15 could be left. As current rescue efforts are becoming more complicated some experts predict its extinction by the end of this year. The vaquita’s fate is tied in part to an endangered giant fish, the totoaba, whose habitat is roughly in the same waters as the vaquita. The totoaba’s bladder is in high demand in China’s black market and can sell for up to $10,000. Erin Dean with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service told NPR in 2016, "People in Asian cultures use the swim bladder in a soup called fish maw." The bladder is also reputed to have some medicinal value — it's thought to boost fertility despite the claim having no scientific backing. Captain Paul Watson is the

Watson explained the impact of the black market on his efforts to
save the vaquita. “We have had threats from the cartels. We just ignore them. But we have been threatened. But we’re not going to be deterred by that. Local Schools Seek Protection from ICE BY MARINEE ZAVALA
The San Diego Unified School District, which serves over 130,000 students is facing the negative effects of of immigration policy which have been put in place by the federal government. Among the challenges which the second largest school district in California faces in this political climate is teaching school leaders and parents what to do in scenarios ranging from what to do if an ICE agent is nearby to where to tell parents to go in case of an emergency. The latest reported case, according to District Board President Richard Barrera,
involved a student at Hamilton Elementary who experienced the desperation of being separated from his parents. “We find out about these things and unfortunately it's after they happen, which is why we are trying to talk with ICE and the Border Patrol so that they talk to us about these cases with enough time; we need to help students and unfortunately this doesn't always happen” Barrera said. Because of this, San Diego Unified is taking into consideration three points of action to help out students who may be

SD Reports High Vaccination Rates BY ANA GOMEZ SALCIDO
More parents in San Diego County are vaccinating their children compared to the state and the nation, according to a survey conducted by the County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). The survey revealed that 80.6 percent of San Diego County children between the ages of 19 and 35 months have received the recommended vaccines. The percentage is just above the federal government’s Healthy People 2020 recommended target of 80 percent. Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. For three decades, Healthy People has established benchmarks and monitored progress over time in order to encourage collaborations across communities and sectors, empower individuals toward making informed health decisions and to measure the impact of prevention activities. The percentage of fully immunized San Diego children between the ages of 19 and 35 months is higher than the state (65.3 percent) and the nation (70.7 percent). Immunization percentages for California and the country came from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s VaxView. “We’re ahead of California and the United States, and that is great news for our children,” said Wilma Wooten, County public health officer. “The higher the vaccination rates, the lower the risks of children getting sick and infecting others.” HHSA interviewers made more than 550,000 random calls and conducted nearly 4,000 surveys over an 11-month period, between July 2016 and May 2017. Interviewers asked questions about vaccination status of people in different age groups, across the life course, to determine how many people are up-to-date on immunizations. The interviews were conducted in multiple languages to reach a more comprehensive sample of the region’s population. The percentages of San Diego County adolescents between 13 and 17 years of age who have been vaccinated against chickenpox, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) and meningococcal disease also exceed the Healthy People 2020 targets, as well as the state and national averages. Wooten explained the data from the survey will be used to plan education and outreach campaigns on the importance of getting all the recommended vaccines.

Trade Tariff Wars Already Costing Us More
mport tariffs against America’s biggest suppliers were announced by President Trump to protect US manufacturers and, therefore, US workers. But, the modern world of interdependent global trade is not a simplistic game of Monopoly with colored money and plastic hotels. In reality, trade is a delicate balancing act. Last month, President Trump imposed tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese-made machinery and electronics to protect American businesses like Caterpillar and US electronics companies, fulfilling one of his signature campaign promises of putting America first. Economists, except for the few inside Trump’s orbit like radical former San Diegan Peter Navarro, cautioned that a trade war with China would result in higher prices for US consumers. Critics be damned, Trump forged ahead. “Tariffs are great,” Trump tweeted last week, claiming that America has been the “piggy bank” to other countries because of trade agreements. In response, Chinese retaliated with tariffs on American soybeans, pork, beef, Whiskey, and other exports from our country’s heartland, and the heart of Trump’s voter base. Similarly, Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, one of our greatest trading partners, claiming it was to protect our national security.
As expected, Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on American goods and Canadian citizens began boycotting our exports. Another one of Trump’s tariffs was aimed specifically on washing machines because American companies complained about less expensive Chinese brands stealing their market share. American retailers cheered. And Trump also imposed tariffs on goods from the European Union, our largest trading partner, including their steel and aluminum, and even threatened to penalize German cars. The EU also responded with similar tariffs on US goods, especially bourbon, jeans, cigarettes, and motorcycles. American companies like Harley-Davidson, Alcoa, and Whirlpool welcomed Trump’s tariffs as important tools to combat cheap foreign imports and argued that Americans would be better off with tariffs. We’re now months into a trade war that shows no signs of ending soon, and, instead, more tariffs are being announced by both sides. So far, though, the tariffs seem to have backfired on the very companies Trump sought to protect. Harley-Davidson recently announced that it plans to move some of its motorcycle production overseas because the new EU tariffs will add $2,200 to the cost of its motorcycles in Europe, and cost the company about $100 million per year. American jobs will be lost.

undercutting US producers. We’re now doing unto others as we wouldn’t want others doing unto us. Trade wars are not zero-sum games with a clear winner and loser. When one country’s exports become less competitive in a certain country, they market those good somewhere else. Foreign manufacturers are now sending their goods to some of the countries the US has alienated with tariffs, and those counties are also buying fewer American goods. In the end, a country with tariffs usually ends up with less supply and, therefore, higher domestic prices. If the prices of BMWs go up and Americans look to buy Fords instead, those prices may be higher too because of higher steel and aluminum prices. Americans lose by having higher prices and fewer choices. GM and Chrysler stocks have fallen about 10% based on lower earnings forecasts because of, you guessed it, higher steel costs. Very few American industries are truly selfsufficient to the point that imported raw material prices don’t affect them. Every American car has some imported parts, Alcoa buys raw aluminum for some of its products, and the majority of products in Wal-Marts arrive in containers from some foreign port. Because of this trade war, our already-high gasoline prices may rise even more, new washing machines are now more expensive, and
new cars prices are going up, too. Launching trade wars and turning toward economic isolation is a dangerous, expensive, and painful road in today’s global economy. The US is the world’s largest consumer market and needs a healthy balance of imports and exports to keep our economy in balance. Smart negotiations in trade agreements with worker and environmental protections are good goals for our country. Punitive tariffs are ineffective blunt tools that end up hurting the very people they claim to try to help. Last week’s meeting with EU President Jean-Claude Juncker sounded like progress but only included a commitment hold off on automobile tariffs and a promise to work to resolve steel and aluminum tariffs, not a complete settlement of our escalating trade war. Trump should let experienced trade representatives hammer out changes to NAFTA, the TPP, and new EU pacts to deal with some inequities without bombastic threats of new tariffs or imposing selfinflicted economic chaos. We cannot just ignore that China, Canada, and the EU are important trading partners that benefit both American consumers and producers. They are not our enemies. Tariffs may be good campaign slogans, but they have already hurt Americans in the worst way: in the wallet.

Sweet summer fun will fill Chula Vista’s Third Avenue from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, at no cost to the community to celebrate the city historic reign as the lemon capital of the world. Presented by Third Avenue Village Association, the 22nd annual Lemon Festival will close traffic on Third Avenue to open Chula Vista’s original neighborhood to hundreds of vendor booths welcoming over 45,000 eager attendees. “The Lemon Festival celebrates the heritage of Chula Vista, which was once the lemon capital of the world. The area used to be full of lemon orchards, and that’s where the festival got its name,” said event manager at Third Avenue Village Association, Kelly Lannom to La Prensa San Diego. “The Lemon Festival is not just based on lemons, but it’s the name of the festival to celebrate the heritage of the area and bring the community together.”

Whirlpool this week announced that its profits have fallen 15% despite trade protections because its steel and aluminum costs have skyrocketed. Overall, the cost of washing machines in the US have gone up about 20% so far this year, and demand has fallen as consumers delay purchasing new machines. Even American oil and energy companies are feeling the pain of import tariffs. Increases in new drilling operations for oil and natural gas require huge amounts of steel for pipelines and drilling wells, and US steel companies can’t keep up with that demand. Traditionally, steel from South Korea helped meet the demand, but Trump’s 25% tariffs are putting some projects at risk. The American Petroleum Institute said the tariffs are undermining domestic energy production and raising gas prices. And last week, Trump announced a plan to pay out $12 billion in emergency subsidies to US farmers hurt by tariffs on their export products. The plan has already been called “welfare” and a “bailout” by Republicans lawmakers. US soybean prices have fallen 25% this year because of the trade war and have left many farmers unable to make a profit on their harvests. Ironically, government subsidies to prop up an industry not only distorts free markets, but it’s exactly what Trump complains that China does to support its domestic companies in

A brand-new space designed specifically for the youngest guests at the San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) is now open. The new exhibit called Backyard is modeled after a quintessential San Diego backyard and provides children up to five years of age with a safe, dedicated place to play while parents, grandparents, and caregivers participate or sit, relax, and observe. The 800-square-foot space, which encourages little learners to learn and explore the natural world through play, is a permanent addition to the Museum. “Opening the Backyard enhances the museum for our youngest visitors and their families,” said Judy Gradwohl, President and CEO of the Nat. “Based on early childhood learning theory and the natural wonders in our own backyards, this exhibition will delight young children and their accompanying adults. California Humanities Offers Youth Grants BY ANA GOMEZ SALCIDO
In order to support emerging California mediamakers, California Humanities is offering a new grant of up to $15,000 for youth media organizations focused on youth 18 years old and under. California Humanities is an independent nonprofit organization and a partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Since 1975, this organization has been promoting the humanities as relevant, meaningful ways to understand the human condition and connect each other in order to help strengthen California. This nonprofit produces, funds, creates and supports humanities-based projects and programs, eye-opening cultural experiences and meaningful conversations. During the past 40 years, California Humanities has awarded over $29 million in grants across the state, reaching every Congressional district. The California Documentary Project (CDP) is a competitive grant program that supports the research and development and production stages of film,
audio, and digital media projects that seek to document California in all its complexity. Projects should uses the humanities to provide context, depth, and perspective and reach and engage broad audiences through multiple means, including but not limited to radio and television broadcasts, podcasts, online distribution and interactive media, community screenings and discussions, in classrooms and libraries, at cultural centers, film festivals, and beyond. Funding is available in three categories including CDP Next Gen grants, Research and Development Grants and Production Grants. The California Documentary Project Next Gen (CDP Next Gen) grants are available now, and eligible applicants may request up to $15,000. Presented in alignment with CA 2020: Youth Perspective and the Future of California, a new statewide initiative that focuses on the lives and experiences of young Californians, CDP Next Gen invites applications from California-based nonprofit organizations and public agencies with established
track records in youth media programming to provide training and support to emerging mediamakers in the creation of short, insightful nonfiction films and/or podcasts that tell original stories about life in California today. If California is at times seen as an indicator of where the United States is headed, then the state’s 9.2 million young people under the age of 18 will play an increasingly significant role in shaping who the nation is and the issues that people care about both regionally and nationally in coming years. With an eye toward the next national election and the goal of amplifying youth voices, California Humanities wants to hear the insights and perspectives of soon-tobe-voting-age Californians on the subjects and issues that both divide and unite people. CDP Next Gen intends to support short documentary films or podcasts that shed light on not only problems but also on the solutions that youth are proposing and the futures they envision. facing anxiety in this political climate, which include in first instance letting families know that school campuses are safe places, where ICE agents have no right to enforce. First, as part of this plan of action, the principal or the person in charge of the school must state to the agent that they cannot enter and must then contact the school superintendent or school board president. The second step is to inform families and invite them to have a pre-established plan which will allow them to act quickly in case of an immigration raid or enforcement operation en route to school. The District has stated that they are working with organizations such as the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial County
and Alliance San Diego to make decisions in case of a family separation. The third step indicates to parents that education institutions are safeguarding to their full capacity their information from immigration authorities, to prevent these from becoming public. “We want to send the message that children have a right to an education, they are welcome in schools and we are doing everything possible to provide support to families and connect them with resources. We understand the anxiety that families are facing, but we want children to come to school and be able to focus on their education”, Barrera stated. Local teachers and counselors, from the arrival of the current president to the
White House, have registered a case in cases of anxiety attacks by students due to things they might have heard at home regarding immigration and the president. These educators claim that this has lead to problem in children's’ ability to concentrate. San Diego Unified, which has record of 60 languages spoken among its student body due to its diversity, joined Sweetwater Union HIgh School District, the San Diego Community College District, Southwestern Community College District and the County of Santa Clara back in April of 2017 to sig a MOU against the executive order which sought to remove federal funding from jurisdictions which did not cooperate with immigration enforcement authorities.

disproportionately killed by police. In 2016, Alfred Olango, a Ugandan refugee who came to the U.S. at the age of 12 in search of protection from violence, was killed by police in El Cajon after his sister called 911 requesting help for her brother. Tony Abuka, Olango’s youngest brother, spoke at the rally for Raul Rivera recalling that before Olango died, he was going through an emotional breakdown after his best friend committed suicide. “It took a big effect on him. My sister called the police, placed three calls in the time span of an hour. They said it wasn’t at the top of their priority list to come and help. When they finally came, it took less than a minute to approach my brother, one officer tased him, and another officer fired multiple shots.” In Sacramento this past March, police shot and killed 22-year-old Stephon Clark in the back yard of his grandmother’s house. Clark was unarmed. In National City in May of this year, one day before Raul Rivera was killed, Earl McNeil died after being arrested and suffering severe brain damage while in custody of the National City Police Department. Last week the medical examiner provided preliminary findings of the investigation to McNeil’s family, and a full report is expected in mid-August. During the rally for Raul Rivera, Tasha Williamson, a friend of the family of Earl McNeil, said, “We should not have to create a law that says it’s a crime to lynch us. We think the Raul Rivera and Earl McNeil families are not asking for things that can’t happen, things that should be a part of law enforcement policy.” “We stand with the Raul Rivera family that stands with the Earl McNeil family that stands with the Olango family that stands with the Sergio Weick family, and the Jonathan Coronel family,” Williamson added. In July 2017 in Vista,

Jonathan Coronel was fatally shot by police, and, also in Vista in August 2016, Sergio Weick was shot by police and died after suffering 18 gunshot wounds. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office previously ruled Weick’s shooting was justified, and recently reported deadly force was reasonable in the case of Coronel. The shootings continue to ignite the debate over deadly use of force by police and demands for accountability. Assemblymembers Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) and Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) have proposed legislation to create stricter limits on when police can use deadly force. If approved and enacted, the Police Accountability and Protection Act, also known as AB931, would require officers to use deadly force only when it’s “necessary” to stop an imminent threat, and only when attempts to de-escalate the situation with nonlethal tactics haven't worked. "We need to ensure that our state policy governing the use of deadly force stresses the sanctity of human life and is only used when necessary," said Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, a San Diego Democrat who introduced the bill. "Deadly force can be used, but only when it is completely necessary." Convictions against police officers are rare. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that officers can’t be held criminally liable in shootings where they feared for their lives. Alex Vitale, a professor of sociology at Brooklyn College, told the weekly magazine The Nation the proposal could generate some progress, but ultimately it is likely to fumble. “The mechanisms of accountability require discretion by prosecutors and juries who typically have given police tremendous latitude in their use of force, regardless of what the legal standard is,” he said. The proposed bill also faces opposition. In April of this year ABC 10 News in Sacramento reported a dozen police chiefs and police
association executives from across California announced their opposition to the bill, expressing concerns it would cause second-guessing from officers and place them at risk. Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association (LAAPOA) President Marshall McClain, who is among a number of law enforcement organizations opposed to the bill said, “While the intent of AB 931 is commendable, this bill lacks clear direction and foresight. It’s obvious that these lawmakers have no concept of just how dangerous policing can be and how a seemingly nonthreatening situation can quickly devolve into tragedy.” The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) supports the bill and has stated a study by racial justice advocate Samuel Sinyangwe found that officers who are held to more restrictive policies are less likely to kill. Those departments on average also see lower rates of officer assaults. Two major law enforcement groups, the Police Executive Research Forum and the International Association of Chiefs of Police have released model policy guidelines that call for higher standards than just reasonableness, including de-escalation and holding officers accountable for creating circumstances that justify deadly force. Charlie Lakony a close family friend of the Olango family who also attended the march and rally for Raul Rivera, summarized his view of police shootings, “Once police arrive, they kill you very quickly, shoot you over many times. It can be explained the first bullet, the second bullet, the third bullet. What is the seventh, tenth bullet, the eighteenth bullet for? It’s for dehumanizing you. It’s making a pungent statement we hate you and we want you gone.” Lakony added, “In the coming months, in the coming weeks, we are going to start working with each and every family and we’re going to start talking with a louder voice.”

De acuerdo al calendario electoral de 2018, se encuentra pendiente la calificación de la elección celebrada el 1 de julio pasado, es de esperar que el Tribunal Federal Electoral la emita en los próximos días — toda vez que las impugnaciones son menores y de poco impacto legal. En ese momento se entregará la constancia de triunfo a Andrés Manuel López Obrador. No obstante que los tiempos son puntuales, en los hechos López Obrador se desempeña como virtual presidente electo. Da a conocer las nominaciones a puestos del gabinete legal y ampliado (Secretarios de Gabinete y principales Organismos Públicos como Pemex, CFE y el IMSS, por citar los más relevantes). Al mismo tiempo, elabora sobre las principales líneas de su plan de gobierno como atender prioritariamente la pobreza, la cancelación de la Reforma Educativa, el combate a la corrupción y los proyectos de infraestructura más relevantes. En el otro lado, los partidos perdedores están en una etapa de control de daños. El PRI es el reflejo de la derrota total, el tsunami lo borró de la mayoría de los puestos ejecutivos a nivel federal y estatal en las Cámaras de Diputados y Senadores su presencia será marginal además de que la lucha por los niveles directivos del partido es una cena de caníbales. En el PAN se disputa una lucha fratricida por sus restos y el PRD enfrenta un proceso de colapso y desaparición como fuerza política. El partido Verde, el MC y los mini partidos bisagra están en espera de poder subsistir como franquicias familiares y seguir gozando de las generosas prerrogativas. En el gobierno, la administración de Enrique Peña Nieto está en fase de desmantelamiento. Su influencia es sólo representativa, las elites económicas la eluden, las fuerzas políticas la desconocen y los gobiernos extranjeros se saltan la formalidad para establecer canales directos con los

Tony Abuka, el hermano menor de Olango, habló en la manifestación recordando que antes de morir Olango estaba pasando por una crisis emocional después de que su mejor amigo se suicidara. "Esto tuvo un gran efecto en él. Mi hermana llamó a la policía y realizó tres llamadas en el lapso de una hora. Dijeron que no estaba en la parte superior de su lista de prioridades para venir a ayudar. Cuando finalmente llegaron, les tomó menos de un minuto acercarse a mi hermano, un oficial lo atemorizó, y otro oficial disparó varios tiros ". En marzo de este año, en Sacramento, la policía disparó y
mató a Stephon Clark, de 22 años, quien estaba desarmado en el patio trasero de la casa de su abuela. En National City en mayo de este año, un día antes de la muerte de Raul Rivera, Earl McNeil murió luego de ser arrestado y sufrir un severo daño cerebral mientras estaba bajo custodia de la policía. Escuelas en SD se Protegen de ICE POR MARINEE ZAVALA
El Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Diego, cual sirve a más de 130 mil estudiantes, enfrenta junto a su personal una de las peores temporadas de su historia en el país, esto principalmente ante los efectos negativos traídos por las políticas migratorias que ha puesto en marcha el gobierno federal en Estados Unidos. Entre los retos que ha enfrentado el segundo distrito de escolar más grande de California a base del clima político es entrenar a tiempo a directivos y padres de familia sobre qué decir si un agente de ICE está cerca, hasta informar a padres sobre a dónde acudir en caso de una emergencia migratoria. El último caso reportado, según el presidente de la directiva del distrito Richard Barrera, involucró a un estudiante de la Primaria Hamilton experimento la desesperación de ser separados de sus padres.
“Nos enteramos sobre estas cosas y desafortunadamente es después que pasan, por lo que estamos tratando de hablar con ICE y la patrulla fronteriza para que nos hablen de estos casos con tiempo suficiente, necesitamos poder ayudar a los alumnos y desafortunadamente eso no pasa suficiente”, señaló Barrera. Ante esto, el Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Diego contempla tres puntos principales para apoyar a los estudiantes que podrían enfrentar crisis y ansiedad por las políticas migratorias, que incluyen en una primera instancia aclarar a las familias que los planteles educativos son lugares seguros, donde los agentes del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas de Estados Unidos (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) no tienen injerencia. Dentro de esta política se espera que en primer lugar el director o quien esté a cargo de la escuela le informe al agente que no puede pasar y contactar de inmediato al

ajo un sol abrasador el domingo pasado, un grupo marchó por las calles de Néstor y pidió justicia y responsabilidad a la policía. La marcha y la manifestación fueron organizados por la familia de Raúl Rivera, quien sufría una enfermedad mental antes de que la policía le disparara fatalmente en mayo de este año. Una declaración del Departamento de Policía de San Diego dijo que supuestamente se negó a soltar un cuchillo. La familia de Rivera ha planteado preguntas sobre la muerte de Raúl. Creen que los agentes de policía podrían haberlo evitado. Una investigación está en curso. La marcha comenzó en las calles donde Rivera fue abatido. Ahí, Flora Rivera, hermana de Raúl, fue una de las primeras en hablar. "No hay nada peor que perder a un miembro de la familia así", afirmó. Un informe reciente publicado en el Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health encontró que la policía mata de forma desproporcionada a afroamericanos, latinos y nativos americanos. En 2016, Alfred Olango, un refugiado ugandés que llegó a Estados Unidos a la los 12 años de edad, fue asesinado por la policía en El Cajón después de que su hermana llamó al 911 solicitando ayuda para su hermano.

David Favela CRECIENDO COMO LA ESPUMA POR MARIO A. CORTEZ
Cuando David Favela, CEO de la cervecería Border X, decidió poner en marcha un negocio familiar, lo hizo buscando una forma de mantenerse conectado con sus familiares. Antes de abrir esta popular cervecería, su trabajo con Hewlett-Packard llevaba a Favela a estar de viaje por periodos extendidos. Mientras tanto su hermano, un ingeniero quien realiza proyectos de turbinas, y sus sobrinos, empleados de Sony, se mantenían bastante ocupados con sus proyectos. “La vida corporativa nos llevaba en direcciones opuestas y solo nos juntabamos muy de vez en cuando para hacer una carne asada o para eventos familiares”, Favela recordó. Mientras tanto, Marcel y Martín, los sobrinos de Favela, ya elaboraban sus propias cervezas caseras en los estilos clásicos de Escocia e Irlanda como un pasatiempo. “A mis sobrinos les encanta la cerveza, la hacían en casa y de manera muy sofisticada pero hacían menos de un barril a la vez”, Favela contó. Cuenta el CEO que un día dijo de forma casual a sus sobrinos que deberían intentar hacer cervezas inspiradas en los sabores de la cultura mexicana. “De ahí, mi sobrino salió e hizo una cerveza a base de agua de jamaica”, recuerda Favela. El resultado de este experimento resultó en la cerveza hoy conocida como “Blood Saison”, elaborada con técnicas y levaduras belgas que resaltan las propiedades florales y frutales de sus ingredientes mexicanos. Al probarla, Favela, su hermano y sus sobrinos instantáneamente supieron que celebrar los sabores de su cultura era la dirección que tenían que tomar como negocio. Al tiempo, comenzaron a fabricar cerveza en una bodega en el area de Otay Mesa, donde en noviembre del 2013 abrieron de forma oficial su primera sala de degustación. Mientras que la recepción inicial del público fue muy buena, varias personas con ideas más conservadoras sobre la cerveza no veían a este proyecto como PERFIL EN LA PAGINA 5

Regresa Festival del Limón a Chula Vista POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO
Un verano lleno de diversión agridulce se celebrará sobre la Tercera Avenida de Chula Vista de 11 a.m. a 5 p.m. este domingo 5 de agosto, sin ningún costo para la comunidad, para el festejo de la historia de Chula Vista que fue uno de los mejores lugares conocido en el mundo por sus limones. Presentado por la Asociación de la Tercera Avenida, el Festival del
Limón en su edición 22 cerrará el tráfico vehicular en la Tercera Avenida para abrir el espacio a la comunidad, en donde se concentrarán cientos de puestos para una asistencia anticipada de más de 45 mil personas. “El Festival del Limón celebra el patrimonio de Chula Vista, que una vez fue uno de los lugares más conocidos en el mundo por sus limones. Esta área estaba repleta de huertos de limones, y de ahí salió el
nombre del festival”, dijo la encargada de eventos en la Asociación de la Tercera Avenida, Kelly Lannom a La Prensa San Diego. “El Festival del Limón no se trata solo de todo lo relacionado con limones sino que se trata de celebrar la herencia de Chula Vista y de reunir a la comunidad”. Las personas que asistan al evento se les recomienda que porten ropa de color amarillo para disfrutar de actividades relacionadas con el limón, de
entretenimiento en vivo, concursos agrios, diversión familiar, una barra de bebidas de sabor limón, así como dulces de sabor agridulce. En el evento se contará con un espacio para entretenimiento llamado Lemonade Bandstand que estará sobre la Calle F, ahí se contará con presentaciones de diferentes géneros de música incluyendo a The Lemon Squeezers, The Orbitrons y
Serious Guys. Las personas que acudan a este festival también podrán competir por la gloria y diferentes premios en concursos de comer pay, competencias de pelar limones, el mejor atuendo, y el limón más grande. Las competencias estarán abiertas para personas de todas las edades. Los interesados en participar se pueden inscribir en el Lemonade Bandstand. Durante el evento, niños y
adultos podrán disfrutar de juegos en el Parque Memorial que incluye una pared para escalar, tatuajes de glitter, un show de réptiles, entre otras actividades. Por ello, la ACLU urgió a que el gobierno de Donald Trump tome los pasos necesarios para “encontrar a los padres por su cuenta”. El juez de San Diego, Dana Sabraw había pedido que ambas partes presentaran sus respectivos planes para reunificar a las familias que por no estar en el país no pudieron beneficiarse de este mandato judicial, aunque decidirá sobre ellos hasta este viernes. La ACLU propone que una vez que el padre o madre sea localizado en su país de origen se fije un plazo máximo de siete días para concretar el reencuentro. De aprobarse este plan, cada inmigrante podría decidir si viajar a Estados Unidos por su hijo o acceder a que este sea trasladado -en compañía de un trabajador social- a la nación en que se encuentra. En ambos casos, el gobierno de Estados Unidos cubriría con los gastos, enfatizaron en el escrito abogados de la ACLU. Estados Unidos habría alejado de sus padres a 2,551 niños de entre 5 y 17 años y 103 menores de cinco años. Bajo la orden del magistrado Sabraw, entregó de forma inmediata sólo a los que catalogó como elegibles para ello, mientras que otros tantos quedaron en espera. En sus números más recientes, la administración informó que ya ha liberado a 1,979 del total de niños de entre 5 y 17 años, de los cuales 1,535 fueron entregados a padres que estaban en un centro de detención y 444 a un tutor o familiar. Todavía unos 572 niños no son elegibles para reunificación, entre ellos, en los casos que hubo una deportación de los padres en un hecho que el propio juez ha calificado de “una triste realidad”. El gobierno ha disputado la solicitud de la ACLU en torno a cuánta información debe entregar para localizar a los progenitores que ya no están en el país. Mientras que la administración federal considera que la ya difundida es suficiente, el organismo de derechos humanos insiste en que necesita más detalles para dar con el paradero de este grupo de inmigrantes.
algo serio. “A veces nos criticaba la comunidad cervecera porque no hacíamos IPAs ni tantas recetas europeas, hacíamos cosas que ellos veían como fuera de lo normal, pero no nos molesto eso porque sabíamos lo que queríamos hacer y no nos arrepentimos”, declaró Favela. El crecimiento no se hizo esperar a pesar de las críticas, y poco después, justo iniciado el 2014, Favela ya estaba firmando un acuerdo de seis meses para compartir un local en la esquina de Logan y Sampson en Barrio Logan, donde actualmente se ubica la taquería ¡Salud! Siguiendo con su rápido crecimiento, Favela luego firmó un arrendamiento para el local que hoy alberga a Border X, luego de que durante una noche con mucha neblina vio prendidas las luces de este espacio. Desde entonces, el negocio familiar ha seguido en ascenso gracias a una excelente oferta cervecera y atracciones culturales que incluyen juegos de lotería mexicana, noches de jazz caribeño, mariachis punks e instalaciones artísticas. “Somos interesantes porque somos un experimento, hacemos cerveza artesanal pero fusionamos el concepto de una cervecería con un centro cultural donde la gente puede reunirse para tener conversaciones,” dijo Favela. Hoy, el negocio familiar marcha fuerte y mantiene conectado a Favela con sus familiares, ya que en equipo con su hermano se manejan aspectos sociales y comerciales de la empresa mientras, que los sobrinos manejan la gestión del local, la elaboración del producto y el día a día de la compañía. Aunque ser el principal ejecutivo de una cervecería independiente es muy distinto a ser gerente para una multinacional de informática y computación, afirma Favela que hay varios paralelos. “No puedes hacer nada sin tener a un buen equipo”, explicó. “En HP he sido gerente por más de 15 años y he visto cómo escoger y cultivar a nueva gente crea un buen equipo de trabajo porque se entiende la visión, con qué recursos trabajamos y qué valores tenemos”. A pesar de que el equipo de trabajo de Border X ha logrado tanto desde su inicio, Favela sigue asombrado con lo logrado. “Border X es lo más visionario que hemos hecho porque nos arriesgamos muchísimo, pero teníamos tanta fe en que la reacción de la gente fuera suficiente para respaldarnos en lo que creciamos y las cosas han salido bien”, dijo. Actualmente, el empresario prepara su siguiente paso, una gran expansión a la ciudad de Bell, en el área de Los Ángeles. Este proyecto, que colocaría a Border X en el mercado metropolitano más grande de California, cuenta con un espacio de 10 mil pies cuadrados en donde se incluirá una fábrica cervecera y una amplia sala de degustación. Ahí mismo se buscará llevar a nuevos lugares el negocio familiar y su oferta de buenas cervezas con miras al emergente sector latino. “El nuevo consumidor latino quiere que se le atienda de una forma que conoce y que le agrade y ahí queremos estar”, subrayó Favela. “La población latina en California es masiva y cambiará el mercado; esto solo es el principio”.

En los alrededores se contará con estacionamiento disponible, pero a las personas que acudan al evento se les recomienda que utilicen el transporte público como parte de la diversión del festival. Hasta dos niños menores de 12 años viajan gratis por cada boleto de adultos que se compra para el Sistema de Trolley o los autobuses públicos. Los centros de tránsito de la calle E y calle H de la ruta azul de UC San Diego tienen paradas de autobuses que llegan directamente al lugar del evento.

El Tiempo se Acaba para Mantener Viva a la Vaquita Marina POR MARIELENA CASTELLANOS
Hay mucho en juego para mantener vivo al mamífero marino en mayor peligro de extinción. Informes recientes han puesto el número de vaquitas marinas en aguas del Golfo de California en 30, mientras que otros informan que quedan menos de 15, y los esfuerzos actuales de rescate son volviéndose más complicado, con algunos expertos anticipando su extinción para fines de este año. El destino de la vaquita está vinculado en parte a un pez gigante en peligro de extinción, la totoaba, cuyo hábitat se encuentra aproximadamente en las mismas aguas que la vaquita marina. La vejiga de la totoaba tiene una gran demanda en el mercado negro de China y puede venderse por hasta 10 mil dólares. Erin Dean, del Servicio de Pesca y Vida Silvestre de EE. UU., dijo a NPR en 2016: "La gente de las culturas asiáticas usa la vejiga natatoria en una sopa de pescado". También se cree que este órgano tiene algún valor medicinal — ya que se dice que aumenta la fertilidad a pesar de que no existen beneficios científicamente comprobados. El Capitán Paul Watson es el fundador de Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, una organización de conservación marina sin fines de lucro cuya misión es terminar con la destrucción del hábitat y la matanza de vida silvestre en los océanos del mundo. Watson y su grupo tienen una asociación con la Marina de
México para patrullar, encontrar y eliminar redes ilegales de pesca, y para informar actividades de caza furtiva. Watson explicó el impacto del mercado negro en sus esfuerzos por salvar a la vaquita. "Hemos recibido amenazas de los cárteles. Simplemente los ignoramos. Pero hemos sido amenazados. Pero no vamos a ser disuadidos por eso. Quiero decir que nuestro trabajo es evitar que la vaquita se extinga ". Lorenzo Rojas Bracho, jefe de conservación e investigación de mamíferos marinos del Instituto Nacional de Ecología y Cambio Climático en México ya ha hablado ante medios sobre este tema. "Tienes mafias o crimen organizado moviendo este producto de México a China, entrando al mercado negro", dijo a CBS News . "Tienes autoridades, sobornos y todos los ingredientes de este tipo de enfermedad en masa". En una entrevista con la publicación Quartz en 2015, Bracho llamó al mercado de vejigas natatorias de la totoaba la "cocaína del mar". Los pescadores clandestinos utilizan ilegalmente grandes redes agalleras prohibidas por el presidente Peña Nieto para capturar totoaba, y estas redes también atrapan a las vaquitas y terminan matando a ambas especies, lo cual es una violación de leyes mexicanas e internacionales. California Humanities Ofrece Becas para Jóvenes POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO
Con el objetivo de apoyar a jóvenes interesados en los medios de comunicación en California, se ofrece hasta 15 mil dólares en becas a organizaciones enfocadas en los menores de 18 años por parte de California Humanities, organización sin fines de lucro independiente que está asociada con National Endowment for the Humanities. Desde 1975, California Humanities ha promovido la humanidad como algo relevante que sirve para entender la condición humana y para conectar a unos con otros, y así poder mejorar a California. Esta organización sin fines de lucro produce, da becas, y apoya a proyectos y programas basados en la humanidad, también apoya experiencias culturales que reveladoras, y a conversaciones importantes. Durante los últimos 40 años, California Humanities ha otorgado más de 29 millones de dólares en becas a lo largo del estado, llegando a cada distrito. El Proyecto de Documentales de California (CDP, por sus siglas en inglés) es un programa competitivo que ofrece becas para la investigación y desarrollo de películas, audios, y proyectos de medios digitales que busquen documentar la complejidad de California. Los proyectos tienen que estar basados en las humanidades para proporcionar contexto, profundidad y perspectiva y así alcance a
una gran audiencia por diferentes medios como radio, televisión, podcasts, distribución en línea, medios interactivos, presentaciones comunitarias, en salones de clases y bibliotecas, en centros culturales, festivales de cine, entre otros. Las becas están disponibles por medio de tres categorías diferentes incluyendo en CDP Next Gen, en el programa de Investigación y Desarrollo, y en el programa de Producción. El Proyecto de Documentales de California Nueva Generación (CDP Next Gen) está disponible ahora, y los candidatos que son elegibles pueden pedir hasta 15 mil dólares en fondos. CDP Next Gen es presentado en alineación con CA 2020: Perspectiva Juvenil y el Futuro de California, una iniciativa a nivel estatal que se enfoca en las vidas y experiencias de los jóvenes Californianos. La convocatoria de CDP Next Gen está abierta para todas las organizaciones sin fines de lucro y agencias públicas en California que tengan un récord establecido de apoyar a jóvenes en los medios de comunicación, y que proporcionen entrenamiento y apoyo en la creación de cortos, películas de no-ficción, o podcasts que cuenten historias originales de la vida actual en California. Cuando era niña, Shaila Dúrcal pidió que le dieran un micrófono y no lo ha soltado desde entonces. Tenía apenas cuatro años cuando vio a su madre, la legendaria Rocío Dúrcal grabando su música junto a Alberto, como siempre le llamó a Juan Gabriel. En ese estudio en Madrid, España, pasó incontables horas, y todavía recuerda que su padre, el también cantante Junior, solo le pedía que al entrar guardara silencio. Si bien se perdía al ver “tantos botones” de aquella consola y no entendía bien lo que pasaba, de lo que no tenía duda es que ya nacía en ella el deseo de seguir los pasos de su madre. Luego de darle “mucha lata” a Juan Gabriel, éste accedió. “Me acuerdo perfecto que bajaron el micrófono lo más que pudieron, me pusieron un banco y me trepé así como si estuviera subiendo el Kilimanjaro”, narra Shaila en una charla con La Prensa San Diego. Fue así como grabó la primera frase “No estarás más más sola”, con la que inicia el emblemático tema “Amándote” de la gran Rocío Dúrcal. “Desde entonces ya sabía que quería hacer esto”, confiesa la cantante española durante su visita a San Diego. Corte de escena a hoy, cuando con una trayectoria de 15 años en la música prepara su séptimo disco y una gira de presentaciones por California. Primeramente, el 22 de agosto en el California Theatre de San José, seguido del 24 de agosto en The Novo de Los Ángeles, para cerrar en el Teatro Balboa de San Diego el 25 de agosto. En su paso por la región fronteriza aprovechará para celebrar por anticipado su cumpleaños, a la par de brindar un homenaje tanto a su madre como a Juan Gabriel a unos días de su segundo aniversario luctuoso.
Aún no adelanta cuál será el repertorio, pero garantiza una velada inolvidable en la recorrerá tanto los grandes éxitos de su madre, como temas de corte mexicano y otros que forman parte de su camino musical. El que no faltará es su más reciente sencillo “Qué importa”, que se desprende de la que será su nueva producción para la cual, aún no tiene fecha de salida. El parecido físico con su madre es evidente. Incluso, reconoce que ella misma se ha “asustado” con el parecido frente al espejo. “Me veo a veces y digo, ¡ay, mi mamá!”, comenta. El mejor consejo que recibió de ella fue “paciencia, hija”, como siempre le decía, mismo que pone en práctica hasta hoy. A Shaila Dúrcal no le molesta que siempre le pregunten de su madre. Al contrario, “si no me hablan de ella, yo la saco a relucir”, revela. “Todo lo que soy se lo debo a ella”.
Sin embargo, ambas trazaron sus propias carreras. Con la misma pasión, pero por avenidas diferentes. Shaila nunca pensó que también incursionaría en el género mexicano, pero fue el mismo público el que de una u otra forma lo demandó. Lo que sí, es que nunca se pondrá los vestidos que lució su madre, incluso, menciona que ni cuando ella vivía lo hizo. Pero los éxitos de Rocío Dúrcal seguirán trascendiendo ahora en voz de su hija más pequeña. “Mi vida entera es un homenaje a mi madre”, enaltece la cantante. “La extraño mucho, se me fue muy temprano, quisiera platicar con ella”. Que no haya duda, “obviamente voy a cantar Amor Eterno toda la vida”, menciona Shaila Dúrcal. Y así será, con el mismo ahínco y el mismo sueño, que cuando se aferró a aquel micrófono en un estudio de Madrid.
Thanks to an invitation extended to La Prensa San Diego’s staff, we flew to Chevrolet’s 2018 Crossover Road Show in Denver, an opportunity for media to experience first-hand what new innovations the Detroit-based automaker is bringing to market this year. As part of our participation at the event, we were presented with a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse to test out and comment on. With a full weekend of driving Chevy’s newest take on the crossover, we walked away with a very positive experience of the Traverse. Performance wise, the Traverse can handle whatever road conditions you can encounter. This vehicle handles extremely well and can even feel as responsive as a sedan despite being a larger-class vehicle. Even while driving on somewhat rough asphalt and through tight curves, making these turns felt very stable. Driving on the highway from the outdoor activity hub town of Buena Vista to Denver, the vehicle’s V6 engine fared well with gas efficiency and allowed us to zoom up steep mountain roads, though this is not a car that roars for speed. Features for city driving include front bumper alerts, side view mirror alerts, and bumper cameras on both ends, all of which were useful and of great aid for remaining aware of the road. Passengers onboard the Traverse will have nothing to complain about with ample leg room throughout. Seats are comfortable and treated with water and stain repellent. Air conditioning cools quickly and can be customized for passengers in the second and third rows. The central console features a robust software suite, featuring both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a potent built-in wifi antenna for up to seven devices, and multiple USB chargers to power tablets and phones. While one can tell technology and software plays a major part in the Traverse experience, the system’s native navigation program is wonky at best and has major issues in recommending roads as projected driving conditions change. Google Driving, Google Maps, and Waze outperform Chevrolet's navigation system by far. Although we packed light for this trip — with just one carry-on piece for all three of our team members — space would not have been an issue had we brought gear for a month out in Colorado. The traverse can fit 99 cubic feet of cargo volume, easily surpassing Ford and Honda’s competitor models, and even outsizing Chevrolet’s Tahoe full-size SUV’s cargo space of 95 cubic feet. Score: 4/5

In an interview with the publication Quartz in 2015, Bracho called the totoaba’s swim bladder market the “cocaine of the sea.” The illegal fishermen illegally use large gill nets banned under President Peña Nieto to catch totoaba, and these nets also ensnare vaquitas and end up killing both species, which is a violation of both Mexican and International law. Complicating what is already a dire situation, last Thursday an international trade court ordered the U.S. federal government to ban Mexican imports of seafood caught using gill nets, which includes shrimp, corvina, Spanish mackerel and bigeye croaker. When he first tried it, Favela, his brother, and his nephews instantly knew that craft beer which celebrates the flavors of their culture was the business direction to take. After a short time, they began brewing out of a warehouse in Otay Mesa, where they opened their first tasting room in November of 2013. While the initial reception to the beers was positive, some with more conservative views of beer did not see this as a serious project. “Sometimes we were criticized by the brewing community because we were not making IPAs or not many European beers, we did things that they saw as being outside the norm, but that didn’t bother us because we knew what we wanted to do and we don’t regret it,” Favela stated. Growth came quickly despite criticism and in February of 2014 Favela was signing a six-month shared lease for a space on the corner of Logan and Sampson, where the taco restaurant ¡Salud! is located. Continuing with their rapid growth, he then signed a lease for the space currently housing Border X on Logan Avenue after seeing the inside lights turned on during a foggy night. Since then, the family business has steadily become bigger and bigger through their great beer concepts paired with cultural attractions such as Mexican bingo games, caribbean jazz nights, punk mariachi shows, and art exhibits, among others. “We make craft beer but we fused the concept of a brewery with a cultural space where people can get together to have conversations,” Favela said. Today, Border X has become established in the local beer scene and has brought Favela into a team with his relatives, with him and his brother handling social and commercial aspects of the business while the nephews manage production and day-to-day operations. Although being the CEO of a independent brewery is very different to being a department manager for one of the world’s largest software and computer companies, Favela says that there are some parallels. “You can’t do anything without a good team,” he explained. “I have been a manager for 15 years at HP and I have seen how choosing and educating the right people created a great team.” Although the Border X family has accomplished much, Favela is still amazed at what this family project has been able to do. “Border X is the most visionary thing we have done because we risked a lot, but we had so much faith in people’s reactions to back us as we grew and things have gone well,” he said. Currently, Favela prepares the company’s next big step, an expansion into the city of Bell, in the Los Angeles area. This project will place Border X in California’s largest metro market with a 10,000-square foot tasting room and brewing facility. Through this expansion of the family business, Favela hopes to continue delivering Border X’s combination of great beers and cultural celebration, all while looking to capture the emerging Latino market. "The new Latino consumer wants to be treated in a way in which they know and like and we want to be there for them," Favela pointed out. “The Latino population in California is massive and will change the market; this is just the beginning."

Watson also explained, “there’s a big difference between poachers and Mexican fisherman.” “It’s not going to do
anything. It’s hurting the legal fisherman and turning them against us. It puts our crews’ lives in danger because it creates hostility amongst the fisherman and towards us because we’re the only people down there visible, so we’re the target.” Watson said in his view he didn’t see what more the Mexican government could do that they are not already doing. “If you boycott Mexican shrimp, then you’re going to create more poverty, which is going to make poaching of the vaquita and totoaba more attractive.” Humberto Becerra Batista, head of Mexico’s National Fishing Industry Chamber, told the newspaper El Universal last month that as many as 820,000 jobs could be lost in Mexico if the fishing ban goes into effect. The Hill reported that according to data compiled by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. imported more than $55 million worth of seafood from Mexico in 2017. Since 1950 we had a 40 percent diminishment of phytoplankton populations, which provide 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe, so if phytoplankton goes extinct, we all die,” Watson warned. Captain Watson also said radical changes are needed to save the ocean, including banning heavy gear used in industrialized fishing. “There’s nothing wrong with artisanal fishing which is local fishermen, but giant boats that go with giant trawler nets are taking everything,” Watson added. “Right now, there are 10 million fishing boats out there in the ocean. A lot of them are very destructive operations. Forty percent of the fish that are caught are caught illegally by illegal activities,” Watson said. Al técnico de los Xolos de Tijuana le gusta hablar de frente para impedir que sus palabras se transformen en malas interpretaciones. “Nos falta trabajo, nos falta terminar por conocernos mejor”, dijo Diego Cocca al analizar el paso de su equipo en las dos primeras jornadas del Torneo Apertura 2018. Los Xolos abrieron el certamen con un triunfo sobre Chivas y la semana pasada tropezaron en su visita al estadio de Tigres. “Tenemos un idea de juego que debemos terminar de pulir, el grupo está haciendo un gran esfuerzo para hacerlo pero todavía nos falta entendimiento para tomar buenas decisiones durante los partidos”, apuntó el estratega. Basta de exageraciones y posturas mojigatas. Basta de querer mezclar el abuso con la admiración. Basta de promover prohibiciones infundadas y miedos absurdos. Mostrar la belleza de mujer no debe ser tomada como una acción pecaminosa que atenta contra lo establecido por la moral y las buenas costumbres. ¿Qué tiene de malo que una cámara de televisión enfoque a una hermosa aficionada mientras observa un partido de futbol en las gradas de un estadio? ¿Dónde está la falta de respeto a esa mujer, quien, por su inigualable belleza, atrae la atención de los productores que deciden transmitir su rostro al resto de el mundo? La mujer es el ser más bello de este planeta por lo que admirarla no debería ser considerado un ultraje ni un acto de desequilibrio mental. En el pasado Mundial de futbol efectuado en Rusia, la FIFA prohibió a las televisoras mostrar los rostros de aficionadas en el estadio. Los directivos del organismo rector del balompié temían que la constante aparición de mujeres bonitas en las transmisiones de los partidos fuera considerado un abuso sexual. Los encargados de manejar las relaciones públicas de la FIFA apartaron de nuestros ojos a las bellas aficionadas que asistieron a la Copa del Mundo porque no querían que su presencia en las pantallas se tomara como un acto sexista. Es cierto que vivimos una época en donde la mujer ha roto las cadenas del silencio para gritar a los cuatro vientos las agresiones, abusos y violaciones de las que han sido objeto. El movimiento de reivindicación encabezado por el valor de connotadas figuras internacionales ha sacudido las bases de la sociedad. Su proclamación de justicia y equidad es loable y encomiable. Ninguna mujer debe de ser presionada a tener relaciones sexuales a cambio de obtener un puesto de trabajo. Ninguna mujer debe de ser acosada y explotada por aquellos animales que no pueden controlar los más bajos de sus instintos. El respeto hacia el sexo femenino debe ser absoluto, pero creo que también es necesario establecer que el solo hecho de voltear a ver a una mujer no constituye un falta de respeto ni mucho menos. Hemos caído a tal extremo, que muchas entidades deportivas prefieren que las mujeres ya no sean parte de su organización. Un par de semanas atrás, el equipo de la NBA, Spurs de San Antonio, anunció la disolución de su cuerpo de animadoras. La Formula1, la categoría reina del automovilismo internacional, decidió prescindir de las modelos que engalanaban las pistas y el podio de ganadores.

The Nat Abre Nuevo Espacio Infantil POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO
Un nuevo espacio dedicado a visitantes más pequeños en del Museo de Historia Natural de San Diego (The Nat, por sus siglas en inglés) está ahora abierto. La exhibición, llamada El Patio Trasero (The Backyard), está modelada al igual que un típico patio trasero en San Diego, y ofrece a los niños de hasta cinco años, un espacio seguro y dedicado solo para que ellos jueguen mientras que sus padres, abuelos o tutores se pueden sentar y relajar mientras los observan de cerca. Este espacio de 800 pies cuadrados incentiva a los pequeños a que aprendan y exploren el mundo natural por medio del juego. La exhibición es una adición permanente para The Nat. “El abrir El Patio Trasero destaca el museo para nuestros visitantes más pequeños y sus familias”, dijo Judy Gradwohl, presidente y CEO de The Nat. “Basado en una teoría del aprendizaje de la infancia y en las maravillas naturales de nuestros propios patios, esta exhibición le encantará a los niños pequeños y sus adultos que los acompañen. Capítulo preocupante es que se reproduzcan las consecuencias nefastas de las crisis de fin de sexenio. Las finanzas públicas están razonablemente blindadas, pero podrían ser víctimas de ataques especulativos a la primera provocación por una escalación del discurso populista de AMLO, retiro masivo de capitales golondrinos, efectos de las elecciones en EUA con el ataque presidencial en los rubros de políticas migratorias, capítulos del comercio regional y la inversión productiva.

"Se puede usar fuerza mortal, pero solo cuando sea completamente necesario". Las condenas contra los oficiales de policía son raras. El Tribunal Supremo ha dictaminado que no se puede responsabilizar penalmente a los agentes en tiroteos en los que temían por sus vidas. Alex Vitale, profesor de sociología en el Brooklyn College, dijo a la revista semanal The Nation que la propuesta podría generar algún progreso, pero que, en última instancia, es probable que falle. "Los mecanismos de rendición de cuentas requieren discreción por parte de fiscales y jurados que típicamente han otorgado a la

restrictivas tienen menos probabilidades de matar. Esos departamentos en promedio también ven menores tasas de agresiones de oficiales. Dos importantes grupos policiales, el Foro de Investigación Ejecutiva de la Policía y la Asociación Internacional de Jefes han publicado pautas modelo de política que exigen normas más estrictas que la razonabilidad, incluida la reducción de la escalada y hacer responsables a los agentes por crear circunstancias que justifiquen la fuerza letal. Durante la manifestación Tasha Williamson, una amiga de la familia de Earl McNeil dijo: "No deberíamos tener que crear una ley que diga que es un delito lincharnos. Creemos que las familias de Raúl Rivera y Earl McNeil no están pidiendo cosas que no pueden suceder, cosas que deberían ser parte de la política del departamento de policía". En julio del año pasado, en Vista, Jonathan Coronel, fue fatalmente baleado por la policía y Sergio Weick, quien también recibió disparos de la policía en Vista, murió de 18 disparos en agosto de 2016. El porcentaje de los niños entre 19 y 35 meses de edad que cuentan con todas las vacunas recomendadas en San Diego es más alto que el promedio a nivel estatal (65.3 por ciento) y también más alto que el promedio nacional (70.7 por ciento). Los promedios de vacunación a nivel estatal y nacional fueron obtenidos por medio de un programa del Centro de Control de Enfermedades. “Estamos más adelante que
California y que todo Estados Unidos, y esas son buenas noticias para nuestros niños”, dijo Wilma Wooten, oficial de salud pública del Condado. “Mientras el porcentaje de vacunación sea alto, se tiene menos riesgos de tener a niños enfermos que contagien a otros”. En total se realizaron casi 4 mil encuestas de HHSA luego de más de 550 mil llamadas al azar, durante un periodo de 11 meses entre julio del 2016 y mayo del 2017. En las encuestas se preguntaron los estatus de vacunación en diferentes grupos de edad y durante diversos cursos de vida, para determinar que personas están actualizados
con sus vacunas. Las encuestas se realizaron en diferentes idiomas para tener una muestra más comprehensiva de la población en la región. El porcentaje de los adolescentes entre 13 y 17 años en el Condado de San Diego que han recibido la vacuna contra la varicela, la vacuna triple bacteriana (contra tétanos, difteria, y tos ferina), y la vacuna contra la enfermedad meningocócica, también excede el objetivo de Personas Saludables 2020. El sondeo también recolectó información de la vacuna contra la gripe. Los resultados indican que las personas en San Diego,
especialmente las que tienen mayor riesgo de desarrollar complicaciones, se están vacunando contra la influenza. Wooten explicó que la información de este sondeo será utilizada para planear campañas comunitarias y de educación sobre la importancia de contar con todas las vacunas recomendadas. “Las vacunas son la herramienta más efectiva para mantener saludables a los sandieguinos”, dijo Wooten. “Debemos de hacer todo lo posible para informar a las comunidades de San Diego sobre como protegerse con vacunas que previenen enfermedades”.

Gracias a su labor como estratega y a su coherencia intelectual, el Necaxa le brindó la oportunidad de convertirse en el técnico más joven que jamás haya dirigido a un club de Primera División en México. Su gran mentor ha sido el legendario César Luis Menotti, con quien lleva una relación amistosa muy estrecha, y como filosofía deportiva sigue al pie de la letra lo que aprendió de Johan Cruyff cuando trabajó a su lado por espacio de un año en Holanda. Rafael Puente DT del Querétaro Edad: 31 años Experiencia en Primera división: 33 partidos (hasta el 29 de julio) En la sangre lleva la misma pasión que su padre demostró cuando en la década de los 70 se convirtió en el mejor arquero de México. El hijo del “Guama” Puente se ha ganado a pulso el respeto que lo rodea como director técnico. Se tardó en llegar al banquillo de un club porque nadie se atrevía a darle una oportunidad, ni siquiera por tratarse del hijo del gran portero y actual comentarista de television. Hasta que Lobos BUAP le tendió la mano, Puente Jr. pudo demostrar que está totalmente preparado para ejercer el puesto. Hoy, con los Gallos Blancos del Querétaro ha tomado el reto de conformar un equipo alegre y que en todo momento vaya hacia el frente. Su grandes dotes para engarzar palabras y pensamientos lo convierten en un gran orador y motivador, pero sobre todo, es un hombre que lleva mucho tiempo preparándose para aprovechar su gran oportunidad. Advertisement for Bids Notice is hereby given that the San Diego Unified School District, acting by and through its governing board, will receive sealed bids for the furnishing of all labor, materials, transportation, equipment, and services to: FURNISH AND INSTALL INTERIOR COURTYARD LANDSCAPING AT KNOX MIDDLE SCHOOL A mandatory site visit is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on AUGUST 9, 2018 in front of the main office of Knox Middle School, 1098 S. 49th Street, San Diego, CA 92113. SENATE BILL (SB) 854 REQUIREMENTS: Effective July 1, 2014, no contractor or subcontractor may be listed on a bid proposal, or awarded a contract for a public works project (awarded on or after April 1, 2015) unless registered with the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) pursuant to Labor Code §1725.5 [with limited exceptions from this requirement for bid purposes only under Labor Code §1771.1(a)]. This project is subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the DIR. Prime contractors must add the DIR Registration Number for each of their listed subcontractors to the Subcontractors List AND submit a certificate of registration for their own firm and those of their listed subcontractors upon request by the District.
