The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest 2023: Smaller but as Good as Ever

--- Después de otro exitoso “Festival Musical de Beale Street”, la organización de Memphis in May se prepara para realizar la prestigiosa “Competencia Mun- dial de la Barbacoa” (The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest), que será del del 17 al 20 de mayo en el Tom Lee Park, ubicado en el centro de Memphis y a la orilla del río Mississippi. Caracterizada por ser una de las competencias de la barbacoa más importantes del mundo, y la más grande, el evento será más pequeño este año debido a las recientes renovaciones del parque. Por lo mismo, en vez de contar con más de 250 participantes, este año sólo serán 150 equipos los que estarán compitiendo en diferentes categorías, como la de las mejores costillas, el mejor puerco entero a la barbacoa, la mejor salsa, etc. Además del puerco a la parrilla, el festival gastronómico contará con música en vivo, decoraciones muy creativas y mucho más.

Breve historia de la “Competencia Mundial de la Barbacoa” de Memphis in May

La primera “Competencia Mundial de la Barbacoa” de Memphis in May tuvo lugar en 1978, en un terreno baldío junto al Teatro Orpheum, y sólo participaron 20 equipos. A medida que se corrió la voz, el evento fue creciendo hasta llegar a ser lo que es hoy en día.

En 1990, la “Competencia Mundial de la Barbacoa” batió récords y obtuvo el reconocimiento como el concurso de barbacoa más grande del mundo o “El Superbowl del Puerco”, como muchos le dicen.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) --- After another successful “Beale Street Music Festival,” the Memphis in May organization is getting ready to host the prestigious “World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest,” which will take place from May 17 to May 20 at Tom Lee Park, located in Downtown Memphis and on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Characterized as one of the biggest barbecue competitions in the world, the event will be smaller this year due to recent renovations to the park. For the same reason, instead of having more than 250 participants, this year there will only be 150 teams that will be competing in di erent pork categories, such as the best ribs, the best whole hog, the best shoulder, the best sauce, etc.

In addition to grilled pork, the food festival will feature live music, creative decorations, and much more.

General admission tickets are $15 per day or $54 for all four days. They can be purchased at memphisinmay.org/wcbcctickets.

A Brief History of the Memphis in May’s “World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest”

The first Memphis in May’s “World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest” took place in 1978, on a vacant lot by the Orpheum Theatre, and only 20 teams participated. As word spread, the event grew into what it is today.

In 1990, the “World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest” broke records and earned recognition as the world’s largest barbecue cooking contest or “The Superbowl of Swine,” as many people call it.
