A 15-passenger van transports customers and equipment to the launch; he suggests that people reserve their timeslot online for the two-hour paddle sessions. Times can be extended.

Burton, 47, grew up in Michigan and Florida. Kayaking gave him a taste of adventure that manifested itself in whitewater kayaking around the globe.

With the opening of Burton Outdoor Adventures, he said he has found his calling.

“Even on that first paddle trip in 2005, kayaking just intuitively made sense to me,” he said. “Since then, I’ve paddled in Chile, Norway, Canada, across the country and around the globe, enjoying every minute. I’ve learned a great deal and want other people to have as much fun and adventure as I have. Our goal is to offer experienced instruction and make it as easy as possible to explore the lake.”

Hours for April and May are Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to sunset. Summer hours are seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to sunset through early August. Fall hours through the end of October, depending on the weather, will be 8 a.m. to sunset on Saturdays and Sundays.

The artists have presented more than 30 public works throughout the world at art museums, sculpture parks, botanical gardens and urban centers from Taiwan to New York. Their collaboration began over a decade ago with a shared interest in sculpting with natural materials and recyclables.

Dodson nodded to the current boom in public art for an increased demand for their work. “More communities are realizing the value of temporary public art,” she said. “We found a niche in botanical gardens.”

Their work carries a message, not only about using materials that are biodegradable or renewable, but also in story. Dodson described their mythical creations as “storytelling in sculpture” that often depicts the mysterious nature of animals, birds, and unsung heroes.

This year’s Pirates of Lanier Poker Run is set for Friday and Saturday, July 1617. It will be based at Margaritaville.

“We’re already making plans for the event this summer,” said Dale Ozaki, president of Lanier Partners, organizers of the event. “Because we were unable to hold the event last year because of the pandemic, we are certain that people will be more than ready to participate in 2021.”

Organizers are making it a two-day event, starting with the Friday lunch “Cheeseburgers in Paradise. Friday night’s Captain's party, a ticketed event, will include the mandatory safety briefing with the Department of Natural Resources and the Corps of Engineers. Ozaki said the meeting will also be live streamed.

Saturday’s Poker Run will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with at least six card stops. That night, the awards party will include entertainment by Fly Betty Band and conclude with fireworks.

Ozaki said that piratesoflanier.com will be updated with details by April 10; registration will be open in early May.
