My child struggles in school. She has homework every night just to keep up because she doesn’t finish her work in class. Her father thinks she’s just lazy. Is she lazy or is there more going on? - Cathy We assess hundreds of struggling students each year and laziness is usually not the real problem. At least 90 percent of them are weak in auditory processing abilities.This means that they do not process speech as efficiently as others their age. They may miss two or more words in every sentence. With that many holes in what they hear, these children do not receive the same instruction as their classmates. They don’t know what to do and so can’t complete their work in class. An assessment will determine if auditory processing deficits are the problem and possible solutions.
Langley woman stands accused of operating Vancouver bawdy house A 45-year-old Langley woman has been charged with keeping a common bawdy house and living on the avails of prostitution following a raid by the Vancouver Police vice quad last week. I’ve heard of a study that claims that older people with hearing loss are at greater risk of developing dementia. Can you say more about that? - Mrs. S. Over 18-years the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging followed 639 people who were initially dementia-free and found that as they lost hearing their risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s increased. What does this tell us? Perhaps the same things that cause hearing loss cause dementia. Or is it that as people have problems with hearing they withdraw from the world and don’t keep their brains fit? When we train children and adults in auditory abilities, we find that their reasoning abilities improve, so I think that as hearing deteriorates so does overall brain fitness. This week I post-tested a 10-year-old whose reasoning abilities improved by eight years after only four months of aggressive auditory training. A good brain fitness program should include auditory training.
