CIVIC: LA PEROUSE MUSEUM DISTRICT LA PEROUSE SYDNEY Located on the northern edge of botany bay is the La Perouse headland precinct formed by bare island and its fort, the Macquarie watch tower and the cable station. The structures and the landscapes that surround them – namely the Kamay-Botany Bay national park – are important elements of the natural and built environment of the city national identity. Despite the significance of the La Perouse precinct, it has been under appreciated and underutilised. This project envisions a new future for the precinct; a destination for tourism, leisure and pleasure, whilst simultaneously addressing the needs of local community and heritage. The development of the project was structured in a two-fold manner: research and resolution. The first semester involved a research project which sought to establish an understanding of the site and its contexts, and develop a project brief. The second semester extended beyond the initial research-based ideas and resolved them through a spatial and material exploration of the interior.

PROJECT PROPOSAL: LA PEROUSE MUSEUM DISTRICT Today, architecture is increasingly shifting away from its origins of internalised function to a more widespread effect of economic developments and social changes. Here, architecture becomes an entity engraved into the city; with potentials to perform mass transformation at the immediate site, local and city-wide contexts. This project aims at attracting tourists to site, ultimately evoking an urban regeneration in the La Perouse and surrounding areas. Research showed that museums that invested in a high spectacle were the most successful in attracting people to place. Therefore, the design approach was to create dramatic events to achieve this. The La Perouse Museum District proposal includes an Aboriginal Museum of Modern Art which will be embedded within the land, a La Perouse History Museum situated in the cable house and a Kamay-Botany Bay National Park Museum which will be located in bare island.

CABLE HOUSE BAR The Cable House Bar is situated in the north wing of the Old Cable House. It manipulates scale by taking full advantage of a double height ceiling and incorporating a mezzanine level which can be used for private functions or general use. The material palette and detailing connects the space to the precinct whole.

ABORIGINAL MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The Aboriginal Museum of Modern Art is embedded within the land of the main land site. A tilted passage connects the embedded galleries and the existing structures. It becomes an aggressive element which cuts through the land. Gallery spaces use daylighting as the main source of illumination through skylights.

AQUATIC MUSEUM The Aquatic Museum is located on the basement floor level of Bare Island where it showcases the beauty of the Marine life of Botany Bay. This has been achieved by creating a live habitat which runs from the interior to the exterior of the museum. This is further accompanied by interactive displays which serve an educational purpose. The architecture uses and emphasises existing elements of the forte to create dramatic spaces.

RETAIL + HOSPITALITY FRENCH BULL FLAGSHIP STORE 93 BATHURST ST. SYDNEY The proposed design for the French Bull flagship store in Sydney reflects upon the production of making melamine plates; the iconic product of the French Bull label. The production technique used is casting and, in the process, positive and negative influences come together to create an intermediate form.
FOURTH
The idea was to approach this thinking towards the way the spaces are arranged upon the site. Positive and negative space are both separate elements, however they work together and draw upon each other. Negative space is used as a neutral or contrasting background to draw attention to the main subject; the positive element. Here, the positive element becomes the French Bull retail outlet which is encased within, and the negative element becomes the second typology; the gallery which houses 1960’s pop art. The gallery is used in a way which enhances the real purpose of the building, creating a silhouette of the retail space. This idea of positive and negative was also transferred into the materiality approach where vertical and horizontal members are contrasted to each other.

RESIDENTIAL MULTI-RES DEVELOPMENT 44 GREEVES ST FITZROY 44 Greeves st is designed for the single professional/student. It consists of 40 apartments with each 40m2 floor space. This high model of density was formed from an understanding that the location has the appropriate infrastructure and amenities as required for a large scale development. The complex features no garages for cars as car ownership is small in percentage in the area. Activating the existing lane way is an integral design feature. The site has been sunken to provide a vibrant public space which can be used for a variety of purposes including performances, theatre, markets, exhibitions, and busking. The bluestone pavement has been used to increase street continuity from the existing lane way. The orientation of the individual apartments has been manipulated to maximise access to north sunlight. The apartments are further separated from one another in order to maximise the comfort of the interiors; increasing daylight and allowing visual access to greenery. Consisting of two apartment types, the apartments are fitted with integrated hidden doors and curtains to increase flexibility. Timber Louvres allow for complete privacy from onlooking neighbours, whilst providing protection from harsh east and west sunlight. The idea of ‘timber to touch’ has been carried through in the detailing.

RESIDENTIAL SHADING DEVICE FITZROY This project was part of the elective, Digital Design Applications, which aimed at providing an understanding of generative computational design. The major project was to design a northwest facing canopy which acted as a solar shading device between the hours of 2 and 5pm in summer. A site in Fitzroy was chosen for the proposal. The base design was generated through grasshopper scripting whereby, using plug-ins, ladybug and kangaroo, summer solar vectors and physics simulation was used to create a base canopy shape which blocked out the sun as required. To allow for views out, this base design was then divided to create a pipe structure system which was used to support timber panels. By attracting the panel vectors to the low winter sun, winter sun was allowed to pass through the structure onto the facade of the building, which further blocked out almost all of the summer sun as required by the brief. The physical model was fabricated using steel rods cut to size, 3D printed plastic nodes to join the steel rods, and laser cut panels which were joined by 3D printed plastic clips connected to the steel rods.

CIVIC QUARRY REDEVELOPMENT BEECH FOREST Quarry aims at developing a connection between agriculture and tourism in the effort to benefit the local community. With Beech Forest positioned at the ‘foot’ of South-West Victoria’s agricultural hub, and within three tourism frameworks; The Great Ocean Road, The Otway Harvest trail, and the Beechy Rail Trail, it complements agricultural land use and employment. The proposal consists of two main architectural interventions, including a site lookout and a restaurant and amphitheatre. This uses a mining and agricultural inspired architecture, with a language of ‘an assembly of parts,’ evocative of the sites past use. These interventions are complimented by a CFA refuge centre, recreational activities, cropping fields and an extension of the Beechy Rail Trail which runs through the site. Although the Quarry was focused on for design intervention, this forms one part of a ColacOtway Shire intervention which consists of accommodation, an agricultural research and education centre, markets, childrens farm, pavilion, greenhouse and workshops/work spaces. CIVIC NGV-CONTEMPORARY CNR STURT ST & SOUTHBANK BLVD
CENTRAL LIFT CORE UP SINGLE CIRCULATION PATH FOR WHOLE EXPERIENCE
(NGV-C)ontemporary is a new gallery for contemporary art in Melbourne, located within the Melbourne Arts Precinct. Situated on the corner of Southbank Boulevard and Sturt St, the museum will be a cultural institution, meeting the demands of Melbourne’s expanding art scene. NGV-C positions itself in the art museum typology as a truly progressive building which has true civic identity, embodying the changing role of art and its housing within the contemporary city; it is socially, economically and culturally bound. Here, the NGV-C becomes part of the city and challenges the typical limits of the contemporary art museum.
CROSS PROGRAMMING
It is a response to the exclusivity which has been prevalent throughout the history of art; from the makers, their art and its viewers. This firm stance is expressed through the buildings form with the abolishment of the fortress art museum typology, as such seen in the NGVInternational. Further freed from impenetrable boundaries, NGV-C creates a true dialogue with the city through permeability and visual connectivity.

HOSPITALITY THE DARLING HOTEL GOLD COAST The Darling Hotel was opened in 2018 as part of a redevelopment of Star Casino Gold Coast. Working alongside DBI Architecture and Interior Design, Steelman Partners Interior Design, MIM Interior Design, and HBA Interior Design, lighting design was completed for the project whole. This included a variety of spaces such as gaming floors, facade, hotel suites and guestrooms, food and beverage outlets, lobbies, porte cochere and supplementary spaces. My responsibilities for this project included updating low level and reflected ceiling lighting plans as required to suit architecture and interior design documentation changes, assisting senior designers in the documentation of custom decorative fittings, developing lighting integration details, assessing illuminance (lux) through dialux calculations to ensure appropriate lighting levels for gaming tables, performing load calculations for electrical engineer coordination, developing budgets for client, ensuring NCC J6 compliance, updating product specification as required, project coordination including RFI’s, documentation transmittals and general correspondences through Aconex, and supplier coordination.
