Mane Solutions: Supporting Lander’s Therapeutic Riding Students Special education majors in Lander’s equine therapy program will benefit from a new scholarship created by Denise and Cobb Oxford, who operate the therapeutic riding program, Mane Solutions, on their farm in Anderson, S.C. Denise Oxford said their daughter, Kelsey, 22, began therapeutic riding after she was diagnosed with autism as a youngster, and it had noticeable benefits for her. They started Mane Solutions so other disabled youth and adults might experience similar benefits. The Oxfords plan to grow Kelsey Oxford, of Anderson, in the and expand the Mane Solutions saddle aboard Sugar. Her parents program but recognize they will established a scholarship in her name for Lander special education need to hire people who have the majors with minors in therapeutic appropriate qualifications. So they horsemanship. created The Kelsey Oxford/Mane Solutions Scholarship for Lander students majoring in special education with a minor in therapeutic horsemanship and who plan careers in equine-assisted therapy. Therapeutic horsemanship teaches people with disabilities how to ride a horse. At the same time, the movements of a horse in motion provide stimulation, which improves the physical and cognitive functions of riders. Lander introduced its program in 2009 at the university’s Equestrian Center on the grounds of Burton Center in Greenwood.
