Stefanie Mountford Bowen, who graduated from Lander in 1993 with a B.S. in marketing/management, and her husband, Jason, who graduated from Lander in 1992 with a B.S. in Family Owned Business of the Year Award-winners business, own Daisy Uniforms of Stefanie and Jason Bowen. – photo courtesy of Jill Piontek Photography Greenwood. They were named winners of the 2012 Jeffrey Butland Family Owned Business of the Year Award for South Carolina, which honors a business that has been passed within the family from one generation to the next. Daisy Uniforms, which the Bowens took over from Jason Bowen’s parents, Emory and Pat, in 2011, was selected for the family owned business award based on its history of growth and potential for continued success. Stefanie Bowen said, “Winning the SBA award was a giant pat on the back. To have someone acknowledge your efforts and sacrifices in such a public forum is a great affirmation that Financial Services you did something well.” Champion of the Year Owning a small business, she said, “means that you do everyJames Manley Jr. thing.” She said that the accounting and finance classes she took at Lander “are put to use every day!” The SBA named James Manley Jr., a certified public accountant with tax, assurance and consulting services firm Elliott Davis LLC, the 2012 South Carolina Financial Services Champion of the Year. The SBA Financial Services Award is given to an individual who serves small businesses in a financial capacity. Although Manley works in a number of different industries as managing shareholder of Elliott Davis’s Greenwood office, his primary focus is on providing a range of tax, assurance and business consulting solutions to small-business owners. Manley, who graduated from Lander in 1993 with a B.S. in business with a concentration in accounting and who also earned a master’s degree in professional accountancy from Clemson in 1994, credited former Lander accounting professor Dr. Harry McAlum with putting him on the road he is on today. “I started Lander with the intention of getting a dual math/engineering degree from Lander and Clemson,” he said. “It was Dr. McAlum, from whom I took a beginning accounting class, who encouraged me to pursue an accounting degree, which I did. The rest is history.” Manley said he is honored by the recognition he has received from the SBA and expressed his belief that “small businesses are what make this country great.” He said he relishes working with “clients I not only admire, but whose company I enjoy as well.”
