HISTORY OF THE LANCASTER GRAND THEATRE On February 12, 1925, two of Lancaster’s most prominent businessmen, J. R. and S. G. Haselden, opened the doors of “The Grand.” The enthralled opening night guests raved, “Spectacular... a Kentucky Showplace.” Six beautiful chandeliers, crafted using actual parts from Model T Fords and illuminated with 277 lights, adorned the main auditorium. There were four elaborately furnished boxes that comfortably accommodated thirty-six guests perched in luxury above the 750-seat auditorium. The Haseldens, theatrical connoisseurs with a penchant for New York’s Broadway, had invested the then extravagant sum of $40,000 to build and equip The Grand. The sparkling new theatre fulfilled their vision of creating a gem in Central Kentucky. Lancaster embraced The Grand, and it became a regional theatre that featured the latest movies, including serials, comedies, and westerns. The bill of fare also offered stage shows and vaudeville acts. On Saturday nights, it was standing room only for latecomers.
4
Today the Lancaster Grand vision has been reborn by history and civic-minded benefactors. Through painstaking planning and efforts, The Grand has been preserved and restored as a living part of Kentucky history. Its previous architectural and visual grandeur has been integrated with technological advancements to make the Grand a state-of-the-art performing arts center. This third season is part of the beginning of a long parade of world-class entertainment that will come to the heart of Central Kentucky. The Grand truly comes to life again in the eyes and ears of a new generation.

ARTIMUS PYLE BAND
FORMER DRUMMER OF LYNYRD SKYNYRD
A Tribute to Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd - a man that defined the sound. Artimus Pyle has said “If it wasn’t for Ronnie Van Zant, no one would know my name.” Long considered the “wild man” of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Artimus Pyle’s powerful and distinctive double bass drumming helped define the legendary Skynyrd sound. The Artimus Pyle Band is a high-energy, true-to the-music, and true to-the-era rock group - one of the few remaining on the road today. Artimus Pyle, Brad Durden, Jerry Lyda, Tony Black, and Scott Raines are not only a group of friends and contemporaries, they are a group with some of the most seasoned musicians in the Southeast. This show is in partnership with Christian Appalachian Project’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN
Smoke on the Mountain is a musical that was first presented on a New York stage in 1990 and is now one of the most produced shows worldwide. The name of the musical comes from Psalm 104:32: “He who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke.” The play relates the involvement of the Sanders family troupe at a country church Saturday Night Gospel Sing in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains in 1938. The show features old hymns and rousing bluegrass songs played and sung by the Sanders, a traveling gospel group making a return to performing after a five-year hiatus. “Totally beguiling... foot-stomping soul food.” - New York Post; “Exhilarating!... A rollicking... cornpone Chorus Line.” – Variety; “A charming and funny celebration of Americana.” - The New York Times.

LARRY GATLIN AND THE GATLIN BROTHERS
Fifty years ago Larry, Steve, and Rudy Gatlin started singing in their small hometown of Abilene, Texas, and then went on to make music history. Over the course of a four-decade career that has taken the Gatlin Brothers from dusty Texas stages to White House performances, from Broadway to Grammy Awards to the top of the country charts, there has been one unifying element – their family harmony. There’s no harmony quite as pure as family harmony. Over the next decade the Brothers scored more than a dozen Top 40 hits, including “Denver,” “Houston (Means That I’m One Day Closer To You),” “Midnight Choir (Mogen David),” “She Used To Be Somebody’s Baby,” “I Don’t Want To Cry,” “Statues Without Hearts,” “What Are We Doing Lonesome,” I’ve Done Enough Dyin’ Today,” “Take Me To Your Lovin’ Place,” “Night Time Magic,” “Love Is Just A Game,” “The Lady Takes The Cowboy Every Time,” and Talkin’ To The Moon.” It was also in ‘79 that Larry Gatlin won the ACM’s “Top Male Vocalist,” “Straight Ahead” won “Album of the Year,” and “All The Gold In California” won “Single of the Year.”

RHONDA VINCENT & THE RAGE
Rhonda Vincent was proclaimed as “the new Queen of Bluegrass” by no less than The Wall Street Journal. She is a five-time Grammy nominee whose voice has been described as one of the most emotionally expressive in bluegrass. She is known for the level of unbridled energy and joy that she brings to every performance, adding savvy contemporary touches to her music while drawing deeply from classical bluegrass traditions. Her brother, Darrin, is currently a member of Dailey & Vincent, a Grammy-nominated bluegrass group that performed at the Lancaster Grand Theatre last season. Among the group’s many honors is its distinction as the most awarded band in bluegrass with over 100 awards, including Song of the Year, Entertainer of the Year and seven consecutive Vocalist of the Year awards, all from the International Bluegrass Music Association. The Buffalo News says Vincent “is to bluegrass now what Aretha Franklin once was to soul music.” “Rhonda Vincent. What a talent. What a beauty. What a special human being.” Dolly Parton

NATIONAL DANCE OF SIBERIA
The National Dance Company of Siberia was founded in 1960, and has been a success from the very outset for its original manner of performing Siberian dances. A company of 50 accomplished dancers, their audiences are captivated by the vivid character portrayals, the musical movements, and the fanciful patterns of the choreographic design. The Washington Post wrote that the “folk dances from Russia seemed broader and more effective than the dances of any other country. Words fail to express the deep impression created by the beautiful figures, swift movements and virtuoso performances including the smooth, gliding dances of the girls, the remarkable jumps and pirouettes of the men dancers.” The Company has appeared in all parts of the Russian Federation, as well as in more than 60 countries. Stunning costumes, thrilling choreography and lively orchestral music combine to create a night of energetic fun for the entire family. “The Krasnoyarsk National Dance Company of Siberia knows how to put on a good show.” – The New York Times

THE BOXCARS WITH SPECIAL GUEST
DAN TYMINSKI
The Lancaster Grand Theatre welcomes back The Boxcars. Since their visit in 2013, the reigning IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year adds yet another honor to its growing list of accolades. The Boxcars have received a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album for “It’s Just a Road.” The band has been often called a “supergroup” for the storied careers of its members: Adam Steffey, Ron Stewart, John Bowman, Keith Garrett and Harold Nixon. This year they team up for the second time with dynamic thirteen-time Grammy winner Dan Tyminski. The Boxcars take new material and perform it in the traditional vein of the legends they grew up listening to, such as the Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs and J.D. Crowe and the New South. “We take original songs and approach them in a contemporary traditional way. That means no string ties and big hats - just killer, no filler stage shows made popular by Allison Krauss and other contemporary artists,” said member Adam Steffey.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2015 • 8:00 p.m. 14
DAN TYMINSKI
Dan Tyminski has the voice, instrumental chops, and charisma to be counted among the most recognizable and popular male vocalists on today’s bluegrass and country music scenes. As a fifteen-year member of Alison Krauss and Union Station, his forceful vocals showcase the band’s commitment to classic bluegrass. He has been featured in Rolling Stone, Country Weekly, CNN, and the Associated Press, and has performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, the Grammy Awards, Good Morning America, the CMA Awards, the ACM Awards, and even Sesame Street. He is also a highly regarded session musician and vocalist, having contributed to projects for Leann Rimes, Brad Paisley, Joan Osborne, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, and Alan Jackson. The Lancaster Grand Theatre is pleased to welcome Dan back to our stage!

The New York Times says, “Sidling up to the microphone, the singers had the air of the Rat Pack, Motown and a nightclub act rolled into one,” while the New York Daily News proclaims, “The Midtown Men sound as crisp as their Rat Pack-inspired suits. Their voices blend together so flawlessly on stage.” The musical tour de force that took the Jersey Boys phenomenon to Broadway and beyond, brings to life the greatest hits of the Sixties, rocking performing arts centers and symphony halls across the continent. THE NUTCRACKER
STATE BALLET OF RUSSIA
This worldclass 50-member dance troupe brings one of the most iconic ballets of all time to Central Kentucky. The Nutcracker two-act ballet first premiered in Russia in 1892 and has evolved into an American phenomenon. The story begins on Christmas Eve and involves a Christmas tree, children, parents, toys, snow and sweets. And, of course, the score is one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular compositions. Generations of children and “children at heart” have treasured this perpetual favorite featuring Russian chorography as performed by Moscow’s famous Bolshoi Ballet and set to Tchaikovsky’s beloved music including “Waltz of the Flowers”, “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”, and “Waltz of the Snowflakes.” The entire family will love this magical experience filled with spectacular sets and beautiful costumes as dancers take to the stage. IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: RADIO PLAY
Join the citizens of Bedford Falls in this traditional live radio broadcast style show. This “play within a play” is complete with commercials, jingles, live sound effects, George and Mary Bailey, Mr. Potter and all the characters we have grown to love in this Frank Capra classic tale. Five veteran Broadway actors, supported by a sound-effects man, deliver the lines of all the characters from the movie. Four are dressed in fashions suggesting that their characters live in the golden age of radio, almost certainly the 1940s. The fifth actor appears to be a 21st-century guy who has wandered into a dusty, deserted old radio studio and sees the others as ghosts. In short order, though, he is interacting with them. In fact, he finds himself cast in the role of George Bailey, originally played by Jimmy Stewart. Celebrate the Holidays at the Lancaster Grand Theatre with this heartwarming tale of redemption and realize that it truly is “A Wonderful Life.”

JAMES GREGORY COMEDIAN
For over two decades, the unforgettable caricature of veteran comedian James Gregory has stood grinning: his shirt untucked, his arms outstretched, a carefree welcome to a down-home, hilarious comedy experience. It’s storytelling at its best. The trademark caricature is the essence of James Gregory’s comedy: ribtickling reflections on life from the front porch. The James Gregory show turns the clock back to a time when life was simpler; to a better time, before the death of common sense; a time when people sat on the front porch and actually talked to each other without a cell phone in their ear. Gregory’s success, like his comedy, is the direct result of the values he grew up with. And now, twenty something years later, it is this unique brand of humor that packs the crowds into his sold-out shows. The absence of vulgarity sets James apart and his stories are carefully crafted art. “I have lived long enough to know people, know life,” Gregory reflects. “My comedy is based on my life experiences. It’s real, it’s funny and the audience loves it. That’s why I’m still in business.” And, he’s known as the Funniest Man Alive.”

The word “legend” gets used too often these days, but when it comes to James Dee “J.D.” Crowe, no other will do. He is a Grammy Award winning artist and a member of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and The Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. Crowe and The New South released the album “Flashback” on Rounder Records. The band featured Crowe on banjo/vocals, Richard Bennett on guitar/ vocals, Don Rigsby on mandolin/vocals, Phil Leadbetter on dobro, and Curt Chapman on bass. MANDY BARNETT
Yes, Mandy Barnett can sing just like Patsy Cline. That much is immediately clear when she assumes the starring role in Always… Patsy Cline. Now Barnett is a frequent guest on the Grand Ole Opry and is equally as comfortable onstage with symphony orchestras. Her robust delivery on her contemporary yet retrosounding country and pop-tinged material harkens back to the likes of alltime great female singers and timeless sounds. Among the many publications praising Mandy’s talents, the Los Angeles Times has heralded her “pipes of steel,” “big, brassy voice and vintage-sounding arrangements.” USA Today calls Mandy one of the “finest classic country and torch singers” to come out of Nashville. Audiences will love her tribute to one of country music’s first ladies, Patsy Cline.

WELCOME TO LANCASTER, GARRARD COUNTY, KENTUCKY! The history of the theatre is featured in this program and below are other historical facts about our community you may find interesting…. Garrard County was formed in 1797 from parts of Mercer, Lincoln, and Madison Counties. It was named after James Garrard, the governor of Kentucky from 1796-1804 Four Governors claimed Garrard County as their home. Kentucky Governor Robert P. Letcher (1788–1861), Kentucky’s first Republican Governor William O. Bradley (1847–1914) and Kentucky Governor William Owsley (1782–1862), all had Garrard County roots. Moreover, Henry Smith (1788-1851), Texas’ first provisional Governor, was also from Garrard County. The author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, visited the Kennedy Mansion in Paint Lick in Garrard County while gathering research material for her book. The book inflamed anti-slavery sentiment throughout the North and deep resentment in the South with its publication in 1851 and was credited by President Lincoln as having started the Civil War. Garrard County is also the “birthplace of prohibition.” The famous Carrie Nation was born in North Garrard where her home still stands. She was known for her anti-alcohol stance and saloon-smashing campaign. She is also credited with being an early advocate of women’s suffrage.
