Lancaster Arts; where ideas, creativity and people connect.

Lancaster Arts; where ideas, creativity and people connect.

Hello everyone, In my first year as director of Lancaster Arts I have felt priviledged in getting to know the talented team here and the remarkably rich range of extraordinary artists that come to visit us and show their work. This season brings our new strapline to life, illuminating how core ideas can connect us together through music, art, dance or theatre or even in family raves such as Big Fish Little Fish. This season it seemed to us that most of the work we are presenting explores the idea of rework, a theme that has resonance in this time of flux in almost all aspects of our lives. What does it mean to rework a classic and why bother? What does it mean to revisit ideas so they feel relevant now or create work that crosses the boundaries of artforms? Andrew Quick, one of the artistic directors of theatre company, imitating the dog says “The concept of re-working is a constant in our theatre pieces – how the projected image works on the live performer and how the performer in turn re-works the image. We have put this idea at the heart of Nocturnes where the film and stage worlds battle it out for who is in control and who might be telling the truth.” This season will offer many opportunities for artists to share their ideas and work further. We are particularly proud of our professional development programme, both for aspiring artists here at the university as well as professional artists in the region through connecting them with the very best there is. This brochure also brings the opportunity for you to meet some of our programming team through the choices they have made and we all look forward to meeting you ‘live’ in our new café|bar before and after the shows. Until then! Jocelyn Cunningham Director

imitating the dog: Nocturnes 8pm, Tuesday 17 October & 1pm & 8pm, Wednesday 18 October Nuffield Theatre. Price A – p22. Internationally acclaimed company imitating the dog return to Lancaster Arts with their latest production. Nocturnes is a multi-media twist on a 50s spy thriller set during the height of the cold war. Two operatives holed up in a Berlin apartment in the Russian Zone await instructions. As time passes their relationship to each other and to the orders they receive from their superiors falls apart. Performed on what appears to be a film soundstage, two actors voice a film they can’t see and never acknowledge. But who is in control? And as the film gathers pace, can the past be changed by present-day actions? Nocturnes asks important questions about truth and free will and about how we understand what’s real in this post-truth era. 80mins. 14yrs+ Workshop: See p20.

Medea, written in rage 8pm, Tuesday 31 October Nuffield Theatre. Price A – p22. By Jean René Lemoine Translated & Directed by Neil Bartlett Performed by François Testory Medea returns from history. This time, she's telling her side of the story… The stage is set for a gig - a microphone, a bank of speakers, and smoke hanging in the air. A figure in an extraordinary gown emerges from the shadows. This is Medea - returned from history to tell us her version of events. This startling, contemporary reimagining of the ancient Greek legend of passion and revenge casts Medea as the ultimate outsider, a stranger filled with rage in a foreign land. Her monologue transports us from ancient Greece to modern Europe and back again in a provocative, bloodsoaked collage of performance, opera, and sexual confession. 80mins. 16yrs+ (strong language & possible nudity) Workshop: 30 October. The autumn gallery programme is influenced and informed by Lancaster University’s Fine Art Department - from a response to our physical space with Impermanent Durations, to the often private and reflective space of the sketchbook. Artists and audiences will open up their worlds through Sketch and a project with artist David Hulston.

Impermanent Durations: On Painting and Time Beth Harland (UK) | Laura Lisbon (US) David Thomas (AU) | Ian Woo (SG) 16 October - 10 November Opening Event from 4pm, 13 October Impermanent Durations: On Painting and Time is an experimental exhibition and collaborative project by four contemporary painters. The artists will work together in the gallery, responding to the space and reacting to each other to create an immersive installation. This is the third staging of the project following presentations in Australia and Singapore. Each iteration investigates the relationship between the pictorial and spatial qualities of painting within architectural space. Working in a range of materials and media Impermanent Durations deals with transience and how painting can offer a site-sensitive experience of time. Join us to open the exhibition on 13 October with a Panel Discussion from 4pm, and evening event from 5.30pm celebrating the publication of a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary Painting.
