Lampasas History Lampasas County has a distinguished history as a destination site in the Texas Hill Country. In 1838, according to “Lampasas County Texas: Its History and Its People,” John Burleson received 1,280 acres of land in what is now the city of Lampasas. He later granted the land to another John Burleson – his first cousin – and settlers began arriving in what then was called “Lampasas Springs.” Lampasas County was created in 1856 out of portions of what at the time were Bell and Travis counties. By the late 19th century, railroad expansion and the city’s mineral springs attracted vacationers to Lampasas, which became a significant resort town nicknamed the “Saratoga of the South.” Lampasas – officially incorporated as a city – grew, as it added schools, businesses and government buildings. Despite floods, fires and economic changes, Lampasas continued to grow and now counts about 6,700 residents. With its vibrant stores, friendly people and warm Hill Country setting, Lampasas remains a charming place to visit – or spend a lifetime.

Martin White Historical Home

This home is now on part of the Martin White survey land which was purchased by Major Martin White after the Civil War. White is best known as a teacher. He started teaching in a two-room log house at 905 Casbeer St. and later opened "The College" in a new rock building. White sold the college in 1870, and the college was renamed Aten College. Major White's son, Martin White, graduated from Centenary College in 1895 and enrolled in the Bar department of the University of Texas. After graduation he was admitted to the bar in 1908 and subsequently was elected Lampasas County attorney. After two terms, he was elected Lampasas County judge. Judge White's sister, Adelphia White Markward, lived in the home built in 1875 just a short distance east of the Martin White home. Her daughter, Frances Markward, has written that she recalls her Uncle Martin's home located on a high spot on a limestone cliff. Major White passed away in 1913, and Judge Martin White was elected district attorney of the 127th Judicial District in 1916, whereupon he moved his family to Bell County. It is believed the Martin White home was constructed sometime after 1870 and became the residence of the White family. Regardless of the actual construction date, the house reflects outstanding workmanship using locally available stone. It is commonly recognized that the expert Casbeer family stone masons accomplished the stone work. Although the usage of the rooms is not known, it appears the 8-room house originally had no kitchen or running water bathroom. Modifications to the home now reflect a kitchen, three bathrooms and an extra room in the attic. The front porch and balcony are original, while a back porch has been added recently. Current owners moved into the home in July 2000. The home has undergone some restoration, repair and redecorating. Much 6  2012-2013 Guide to Lampasas

of the work has been done by Lampasas County workmen which reflects quality work skills of the people in this area. Perhaps one of the most interesting features of the home is its location. The house is situated on a hill that overlooks downtown Lampasas. The site at 448 County Road 3420 leads directly across FM 580 East into Casbeer/Third Street which connects to the town square. It has been reported that Judge White especially enjoyed the fact that he had a direct and somewhat short ride to the courthouse. The location continues to be convenient for activities in the city of Lampasas.

Lampasas Animal Shelter

The Lampasas Animal Shelter opened its doors in October 2009 at its College Street facility. The shelter is a collaboration between the city and county to provide a temporary home for stray and abandoned animals in the 6,600-square-foot building. It features 58 dog runs and a number of cat kennels. Kasey Dressel is the shelter supervisor. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Animals also are sent to no-kill facilities each month and breed-specific animal rescue organizations. Volunteers are needed to foster pets, help clean cages, feed and walk animals, and provide general companionship for dogs and cats. The shelter is in continuous need of animal bedding, blankets, towels, pet toys, cat litter, cages and crates. Outdoor Activities The

cedar-studded hills, meandering creeks and oak motts of Lampasas County have much beauty and adventure to offer outdoor enthusiasts. From nature walking to hunting and fishing, there are plenty of ways to pass time amidst the grandeur of the Hill Country. Lampasas County attracts hundreds of hunters to the fields each year and consistently ranks as one of the most popular counties in Texas for whitetail deer hunting. Whitetail archery season begins in early October, and the opening day of the general season – when rifles and bows are allowed – traditionally has been the first Saturday of November. Hunters may bag five deer, including two bucks, in Lampasas County. Deer season functions not just as a sporting period but also as a social time. Several dinners and raffles are held throughout the county, giving hunters and non-hunters opportunities to mingle and meet new people. A game warden appreciation dinner is held in Adamsville, and the Lampasas County Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Hunters Welcome, at which sportsmen can purchase barbecue meals as they stock up on last-minute hunting gear from Lampasas stores. While known for its deer hunting, the area also affords ample opportunities for hunting doves, turkeys, feral hogs, exotic deer and antelope, and non-game species, such as bobcats, coyotes and rabbits. In addition, anglers can catch catfish, bass, perch and many other species in area rivers, creeks and tanks. W.M. Brook Park, located along Sulphur Creek near the intersection of U.S. Highways 281 and 190, provides shaded docks where families can fish, or feed the resident ducks and geese. A fishing license is required, although the park does not charge an entrance fee. Catfish are a popular catch in the park, and trout also are available at times when the creek is stocked. Outside Lampasas, drivers sometimes park their vehicles by the U.S. Highway 190 bridge near the western edge of Kempner – or along Farm-to-Market Road 580 East at the Lampasas River – before venturing down to the riverbank to fish, wade or skip rocks on the water. Those who take to the outdoors do not need a firearm or a fishing pole to enjoy Lampasas County’s natural wonders. Many species of colorful birds and butterflies pass through Central Texas, making Lampasas County an ideal place for outdoor photography or a restful afternoon of birdwatching. In addition, a paved walking trail winds through W.M. Brook Park, and a dirt loop leads walkers or runners around Hanna Springs and the Campbell Park Sculpture Garden, which can be reached from Hackberry and East Second streets, as well as from East North Avenue. Rex and Linda Johnson Park, under development across Hackberry Street from the sculpture garden, will offer an additional public venue for nature walks, and the study of Hill Country birds, butterflies, other wildlife and vegetation. 14  2012-2013 Guide to Lampasas

Sculpture Garden Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden at Campbell Park features art from a number of well-known sculptors from around the globe. Several sculptures also are on exhibit at other locations around the city, including W.M. Brook Park and Rollins Brook Community Hospital. Lampasas artist TJ Mabrey contributed “IV Florae for Flora,” a permanent part of the park’s sculpture collection. While several sculptures are on display for a short time, others will be in the park permanently, including “Lampasas Furniture” and “Pegasus” by Carolann Haggard; “Meadow Dancers” and “Portal to the Springs” by David Hickman; “Rustle” by Jim Hunnington; “Starburst” by LaPaso; and “Been Fish’en” by Joe Barrington. The garden provides an opportunity for the more than 20 school districts in the area to take advantage of an outdoor teaching facility. It is fast becoming a tourist destination for travelers who are driving through the Central Texas region. The sculpture garden also provides a contemplative environment for anyone to enjoy.

Murals capture history of Lampasas Four Texas-sized murals on the exterior walls of several Lampasas businesses capture the history and culture of the community since its beginning in the mid-1800s. The murals – a creation of Vision Lampasas! – began with the “Boot Mural” as an experiment to see how the artwork could affect the city. A committee of local volunteers through the Vision Lampasas! Art Committee was formed to work out the design and process for transferring it to a wall. Led by T.J. Mabrey, a local sculptor, the committee decided to project the images at night and trace the design onto the selected wall. The “Boot Mural” is a tribute to Ray Jones, a legendary Lampasas boot maker, and the talented artisans from the area who followed in his footsteps. A call went out to the community to bring in handmade boots – especially those crafted by Jones – and 150 pairs of boots came in. After photographing individual boots, the footwear was laid out in a large pile. Using a fire department bucket truck, a photo was captured from above the pile of boots. A portion of the photo was chosen for the mural because of the varied colors, patterns and sizes of boots shown. Jerry Goodson gave the committee use of an exterior wall of his surveying office on Western Street near its intersection with Fourth Street. Each area of the photo that was traced onto the building wall was assigned a number that corresponded to a paint can that was part of the color palette for the mural. Using the paint-by-number method allowed volunteers from the community to paint on each mural. Murals are designed to be viewed from a distance. The second mural, “Generations,” is on the north wall of Lampasas Hardware and Contractor Supply at Second and Western streets. It depicts the varied businesses that have occupied the building from the mid-1800s to the present. C.N. Witcher moved to Lampasas in 1866, and soon after established the Texas Trading Co. Over the years, the building has housed an auto company with a drive-in “filling station” on the corner, a Western Auto store, a bowling alley and car dealerships. At the west end of the mural is a very good likeness of Johnny Wade, the historic building’s current owner. “Postcard” is the third mural from the VL! Art Committee, and it is featured on the Ron Ischy Masonry Building at Sixth and Western streets. The mural was inspired by vintage postcards that sent out “Greetings from (a town)” with images from that area. The local “Postcard” begins with a lanky cowboy, an image that for many years adorned billboards along the highways entering the city and welcomed folks to “Lampasas – the Heart of the Cow Country.” With his rope in hand, the cowboy now stands in the Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden in Campbell Park watching a herd of grazing cattle. In addition to the cowboy depiction on the mural, the word “Lampasas” appears in large block letters. Within each letter are images of historic buildings that have been preserved and can be seen around town. The fourth VL! mural, “Water is Life,” is in the breezeway next to the Lampasas County Office Building annex on the east side of the downtown courthouse square. The numerous natural springs in Sulphur Creek first brought the native Indians to the local area. Later, the settlers came for 20  2012-2013 Guide to Lampasas

the same reason – water is necessary for life. The Sulphur Creek mural includes paintings of birds, fish and other animals that inhabit the local watershed as well as springs and tributaries that feed Sulphur Creek. Nine dams built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to hold back flood waters are featured on the mural. The city of Lampasas had experienced devastating floods – the last being in May 1957 – shortly before the dams were built. The water level of the ‘57 flood is painted on the wall to serve as a reminder of how high the water climbed. Because of the many volunteers involved in painting the four murals, these artworks are very much the citizens’ gift to the community of Lampasas.

Rex and Linda Johnson Park Rex and Linda Johnson Park provides the perfect place to pass time in the solitude of nature. The newest addition to the Lampasas parks system, the land off Hackberry Street across from the Campbell Park Sculpture Garden was donated to the city in 2008. The donors – Lampasas residents for whom the park is named – and an assortment of volunteers hope to develop the 19.4-acre site as a bird and butterfly habitat filled with the colors of native wildflowers. Planning continues as volunteers and city parks staff members try to establish and protect plants that will attract wildlife. Wooded wetland areas along Spring Branch, Cooper Spring and Burleson Creek provide cool, relaxing places to escape the bustle of the normal routine. Grass also has been mowed, and brush has been cleared to provide a serene walking path. The warm, wet spring months provide the ideal time to view the array of wildflower colors at the park. Rex and Linda Johnson Park is a gem of natural beauty in the heart of Lampasas.

Badger Pride Badger Stadium looks peaceful nestled in its spot on the north end of Lampasas. But don’t be fooled by the appearance from the outside. The sun is rising at 6 a.m. on a calm Friday morning, and the final preparations already are beginning for the football game that evening. The opponent scouting reports, film sessions and game strategies have long been finalized. Now, Badger mascot Kailey Davis is waking up and putting the final touches on her routines for the game. “I usually start from scratch with all of my music completely bare, and then I and my best friend go with whatever comes to our head,” Davis said. “We just go with it and use whatever. I’m already exhausted, though, and all I want to do is go back to sleep.” Now, jump ahead 12 hours. School is out for the week, the pep rally to pump up the fans was another success, and now the Badger players are in the locker room relaxing and making final preparations for the game. The Lampasas cheerleaders are putting the final drops of glitter on their signs, and the fire for the barbecue is being ignited. Then, the gates to the public open, and that moment fans have been waiting for all week is almost here. It’s still an hour and a half until kickoff, but the bash already is in full swing. The “Friday Night Lights” experience begins as soon as one walks through the small ticket tunnel and right into a wide view of the stadium with the smell of hamburgers and barbecue in the air. It is evident that this stadium has a rich history of tradition. Memories from every great Badger season and, most recently,

28  2012-2013 Guide to Lampasas

the 2011 district championship are blending with the memories of nostalgic fans. “When we beat Liberty Hill [last season], that was fun,” Lampasas football coach Joey McQueen said. “After the game, when those kids rushed the field, that was so exciting. I wanted those kids to enjoy it because they’ll remember that moment for the rest of their lives. “It’s moments like that that are what high school football’s all about.” Students, most of whom are dressed in Badger blue, make their way to the student section to try to get a coveted front-row seat. With only one hour left until kickoff, the kind of noise the home crowd of 3,500-plus is capable of making starts to become apparent. Cowbells, vuvuzelas and just about any other noisemaker can be found amid the cloud of royal blue that now covers the gray steel of the bleachers. “Our fans back our boys a lot,” Lampasas cheerleader Sydney French said. “It really helps the team on the field, and it really helps us do our job.” Speakers at the south end of the stadium blast pump-up music loud enough to be heard hundreds of yards away, as the teams are now on the field warming up. The helmets are clanging, and bodies are smashing into each other, but that’s just a preview of what is about to come in 28 minutes and 20 seconds. Eventually, the piped-in music ends, and the Badger band roars to life, replacing thumping bass with blaring brass. Somehow, the transition works. It’s getting closer now. When the field empties of the all-blue jerseys after pre-game warm-ups, it is immediately overtaken by the Flames drill team, decked out in their white western outfits with cowgirl hats and boots. Now it’s time for the most important part of the ceremonies: the fight song. Everyone seems to knows the words, and the few who don’t can at least pick up “Badgers fight!” Then the attention turns to the large inflated Lampasas helmet. Enjoy the sight of the big “LB,” which is plastered on the state of Texas logo, since it won’t last long. In just a few seconds, a cloud of thick smoke will clog the sight. But be patient, as the smoke will soon disappear into the air, and the Badger players and coaches will run through the tunnel to be greeted by the fans. Finally, it’s time for kickoff.

In both programs, girls’ cheerleading is becoming more popular every year.

A youth basketball league, held during the winter months, also is run through Grace Fellowship. The Boys and Girls Club operates a youth soccer program in the spring, while the city of Lampasas runs a youth baseball league in the summer months. In addition to youth sports, Hancock Park Golf Course offers tournaments year-round for youth as well as adults.

More than a decade ago, the idea of hosting an annual rodeo as a way to publicize the area and attract visitors was discussed. That idea has turned into the Riata Roundup, which will celebrate its 11th year in 2012 by holding festivities that have pushed it beyond a mere rodeo. The rodeo features eight events, such as steer wrestling and saddle bronc competition. Although the riata rodeo serves as the centerpiece of the weekend event, the family-friendly atmosphere includes shows, a queen contest, vendors, children’s events such as a boot scramble and stick horse races, and a dance in order to appeal to a wide variety of people beyond rodeo fanatics. Throughout its decade-plus in existence, the rodeo has undergone some changes, as it began in Lampasas but moved to Lometa several years ago.

The Riata Roundup Rodeo is held at Lometa Regional Park, and this year's dates are June 8-9.

The Agriculture of Lampasas Since the first permanent Anglo settlers arrived in Lampasas County in the 1850s, agriculture has been an influential part of the county’s landscape and economy. Cattle ranching has been – and remains – one of the main ranching endeavors, although some agricultural producers over the years have focused on sheep and goats. Lampasas County developed as an important wool warehousing and marketing center in the early 20th century, according to the book “Lampasas County Texas: Its History and Its People.” Despite population movement away from farms and the fragmentation of rural land as large ranches are subdivided, agricultural activities remain a viable source of economic activity in Lampasas County. Cow-calf operations, goat ranching and the raising of livestock bred especially for shows generate income for county landowners. Several wineries also have opened in recent years, giving a Mediterranean look to parts of the Hill Country. In addition, many property owners are purchasing and managing land for recreational purposes, from horseback riding to nature viewing to hunting. Hunting leases – particularly for white-tailed deer – can generate thousands of dollars per year for some landowners and allow many people from across the state to enjoy sporting opportunities in Lampasas County. Development continues to draw more urban amenities to Lampasas and surrounding communities, but ample open spaces remain, and Lampasas stays firmly connected to its rural roots.
