Study Abroad: Well Dressed Well Travelled Battle of the Seasons

Letter From the Editor Back to school has always been a time of excitement and renewal. The smell of new (but more realistically used) textbooks fills the air, and the undeniable Husky spirit returns to campus as it should. Back to school is just as much a time to reflect on what past years have offered us thus far as it is a time to consider what we can offer the upcoming year. Of course as fashion lovers, it is hard to daydream about the year to come without including plans and visions of a fresh fall wardrobe. The thing is, one doesn’t necessarily have to spend an entire tuition’s worth to make those dreams come true. In fact, this year I’d encourage you not to do so-not only on behalf of your future but because of the creativity that can stem from working with what already exists in your closet. This year, allow yourself the opportunity to view your current pieces in a new light. In this issue, we are thrilled to show you how to transition summer pieces into fall, how to wear the fall staple of flannels in new ways, and so much more. Do not be afraid to stand out by experimenting with your fashion choices. Have a fabulous fall!

Love, Olivia Tinsley

La Mode’s mission is to enrich the campus culture through interaction with fashion. We bring fashion together on campus and offer students involvement. What is unique about us is that we don’t have any particular fashion look or requirement. Whether you like couture, street style, or simply just daydream about fashion we encourage everyone to get involved. La Mode, a student-run fashion club at UW, hopes to bring fashion to a campus where there is no official fashion program, and let students become involved as much as possible. With the various ranges of styles here on campus, our goal is to bring everyone together and share our love for fashion. Bios Olivia Tinsley I am so happy that I had the opportunity to get involved with La Mode during my first year at UW. La Mode has allowed me to connect with others, and utilize my passion for writing, editing and of course, fashion. Collaborating with members to launch La Mode Magazine has been one of my favorite experiences so far. Taking on a leadership role in both editing and writing articles for the magazine has been an excellent supplement to my pursuit of Communications degree. I have had such a blast with the production of the magazine, and it has definitely confirmed my aspirations of working in the fashion and editorial world. I can’t wait to see how La Mode both as a club and magazine grows throughout the years!

Suki Chan I first heard about La Mode during the first magazine launch event in Winter 2014. I thought it was an innovative idea to launch a fashion magazine at UW. I’ve only been involved in the club for a quarter, but I would say the club has been a place for me to explore the vibrant Seattle fashion area and try new things. I played a main role in art/design by designing posters and some pages of the magazine. I took part in the communication and styling for the photo-shoot collaboration with ZebraClub. I also got a chance to interview my favorite fashionable person and share her distinct point of view. It was a great experience and I feel accomplished of how much I could contribute to the club and the magazine.”

Hami Bahadori I am very glad to be working with La Mode. The group is extremely passionate, young and energetic about fashion. With the heavy advertising that we see every day, it’s nice to have a small club that values talented models, designers and photographers. I started my collaboration with La Mode since last year, and it’s been fantastic so far. I am always in search for new ways to alter the way people view fashion through my photography, therefore I was happy to find La Mode. As a student photographer, I always admire the energy that these talented students put into this club. New ideas are always welcome, and it’s a great place not just for fun, but also to get real-world experience in fashion.

Esther Bae I have lived in Seattle all my life since birth. I have finished my second year in college, and I am a visual arts major. Drawing and getting creative with crafts has always been of interest to me. More than art itself, I have a special place in my heart for fashion. When I see clothing I wonder about its construction, behind-the-scenes work and the ways to style it. This led me to teach myself to sew, as well as study trends and fashion drawing. When I get asked why I like fashion my answer is simple: it makes me happy. Clothes have given me the freedom to be creative and experiment with different pieces. Instead of always trying to follow trends, I believe in personal style. Be creative and have fun with it! Fashion is my source of personal expression and my favorite kind of art form.

Bios Coco Ho My name is Coco and I’m from Hong Kong. I was raised in a very international environment and that had highly influenced my fashion sense. I’m always inspired by Japanese fashion and am a keen reader of Vivi magazine. I’m also fascinated by the works of British designers such as Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney. In my leisure time, I enjoy reading Japanese mystery novels and fashion blogs (Susie bubble and The Man Repeller). I’m very excited to continue working with the fabulous lamode members to promote the love of fashion in uw!

Linh Ma Tran I was born in Vietnam and have lived there my entire life until I became a full time student at the University of Washington. I am freshman and would like to have a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. I like travelling, reading, watching TV shows and exercising. I found out about La Mode when I was waiting for the elevator in my residence hall; La Mode’s poster caught my eyes right away. I have always had a passion for fashion, and La Mode has given me a chance to meet with people who have the same passion. The club has also encouraged me to be more confident of myself.

Alice Day Alice Day is a junior at the UW pursuing degrees in Journalism, Political Science, and Sales. She is currently a multimedia journalist at the Daily and the Seattle Globalist and an international tutor at Seendio.com. She aspires to become a radio personality, a political ambassador, or an English content creator in Asia. Alice spends her free time blogging, shooting, and filming for her website www.alicedaylight.com. Growing up in various countries, Alice’s fashion style is very influenced by European, Asian, and American style icons. Alice can often be spotted wearing Zara, Rag & Bone, One Teaspoon, and Citizens of Humanity. “If I had to label my style, I’d have to describe it as a mix of prep and street. I love mixing the utilitarian preppy schoolgirl look with the ripped jeans, leather shorts, and chunky boots associated with street style.”

Scarlett Hao I started “La Mode Fashion Club” because of my passion for fashion. The purpose is to offer students an opportunity to celebrate their own personal style and help those who have a career goal in the fashion industry. Seeing the club today and it’s achievements, I am happy as a mother seeing her own child. At the same time, I feel that I grew with the club in multiple ways, it helped me become a leader; it helped me understand how to create a magazine; it also helped me what kind of career I want. La Mode Magazine was a product of collaboration of all the members in La Mode Fashion Club. Students run the magazine. I want to thanks for everyone who contributed their hard work to La Mode!

Katy Lee I’m an enthusiastic student and photographer transplanted from rural Eastern Washington to the beautiful city of Seattle. I’ve been doing photography since my junior year of high school, and finally got a chance to try my hand at fashion photography working with La Mode this year. I love fashion and I love photography, so naturally I loved combining those two things to help contribute to this magazine!

Natalie Fajardo I was raised in a small, foresty town called Silverdale. Moving to the big city just last year was a drastic change for me. There is so much more inspiration and life here in Seattle and I’m definitely proud to be going to the University of Washington and being a part of the La Mode: Fashion Club at UW! Though I plan to be a Public Health (BS) major, I love emerging myself into the many aspects of fashion. I’ve worked for retail stores, marketed and promoted for VS PINK and Teen Vogue, and designed the pages of this very magazine! This club is a creative outlet for me, it helps me express who I truly am. I one day hope to integrate healthcare and fashion somehow in the future!

Tokyo

Summer Trends By Coco Ho

This summer, I was lucky enough to go on a trip to Tokyo. While I explored the vibrant city and immersed in countless shopping trips, I observed this summer’s fashion trends. Harajuku fashion, which includes rainbow colored hair, tulle skirts, gothic handmade accessories and platform boots, has always been a signature of Tokyo. Though that is indeed the case, many locals also choose to gear towards the latest fashion trends. Through the crosswalks of Shibuya and narrow roads of Harajuku, I observed that there was a rise of preppy and vintage styles. Furthermore, I found that there are three especially popular items. The first item is the knee-length flared skirt. The flared skirt, a famously made centerpiece by Christian Dior during the 1940s, is extremely popular among fashionable young women. The skirt’s special A-line flatters almost every women due to its slimming waistline and modest length at the knee. Now, as the love for vintage grows, Tokyo has also started to adopt this style. While embracing the gracefulness and chicness, many girls coordinated the skirt with logo t-shirts and casual crop tops, adding a surprisingly fun and playful twist. As for a more elegant approach, the skirt also works perfectly with a light-color off-shoulder crop top (figure A). The crop top not only magnifies a slim waistline, but also reveals the shoulders to add a sense of maturity. Following the celebrated vintage style of the 40s, the knee-length pencil skirt also seemed to be extremely catchy. The pencil skirt, believed to be challenging due to its (cruel) emphasis on the waistline and hips was put into a brand new light this summer. Instead of traditionally pairing the pencil skirt with blouses and humble collared shirts, Tokyo fashionistas choose to coordinate it with logo T-shirts and ankle booties, achieving a look of simple perfection (Figure B). The third and last item I wish to introduce is the collared tank top. This piece overthrows the traditional modest and reserved character in that it flatters the shoulders. Some collared tank tops use sheer fabrics for the collared part, complimenting the shoulder bones. Altogether, this builds a very chic look. Easily matched and highly efficient, the top goes well with almost everything. Even an unlikely choice of coordinating it with a tennis skirt can be a pleasant surprise (Figure C). The summer trends of Tokyo had a huge emphasis on vintage plus casual coordination and playful twists. I hope the introduced three popular items: the knee-length skirt, the pencil-skirt and the collared tank top, will bring you more ideas to create even more outstanding outfits.

Fashion Abroa Somewhere Soleil By Soleil Roth

Growing up, I have been exposed to a variety of knowledge through my travels, which has allowed me to embrace a deep passion for the world around me. New perspectives, different cultures, amazing food and creative fashion, traveling has allowed me to learn and see things I will never take for granted. Before school began, I was able to travel to Europe with my family, including Amsterdam, Venice and Croatia. While my outfits took a more casual approach, my true focus was engulfed in the history, nation, fashion and culture around me. Our first stop was in Amsterdam and if there was one season that was synonymous with the city, it would no doubt be fall. From the muted brick buildings to gray cobblestone lining the streets mixed with the reds of the turning leaves and browns of the bikes were the epitome of fall. While my first thought of Holland usually involves clogs and cheese, their fashion is far from it. As the most common transportation includes biking and walking, I noticed that daily wear usually involved a nice pair of jeans and light layers, to accompany comfort and functionality amidst the changing temperatures and activities. For the more fashion savvy, the main streets to shop include the Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat, which include your typical large European brands like Zara and also offer more exclusive stores like Flippa K, respectively. My personal favorite included De Negen Straatjes, or ‘The Nine Streets’, a gridlock of nine streets brimming with cute cafes, boutiques and vintage stores, a paradise for any shopping lover. Next stop, Venice. Warm and sunny, everything about Italy makes my heart swoon. The romantic language, the intricate architecture, the homemade food and not to mention gorgeous people, Italy is by far and will always be my favorite place. While we had been to Italy before, we only took a short trip to Venice which is without a doubt a large tourist destination so many of the stores were tailored to tourists and included many big name brands like Burberry and Prada, so most of my fashion inspiration came from the city itself. One day trip from Venice to the island of Burano led us to a city lined with colorful buildings that could be sure to make a pop whether on the walls of homes or on my latest bag. After our first couple of days, we headed over to Croatia. Excited and eager, I could not help but love every minute of it. Just something about the way the crystal blue sea met with the taupe rock and old limestone of small villages gave off the essence of peace and tranquility. Amidst the beauty of the country, I noticed that most of the people around me kept their look classic and simple; emphasizing the timelessness of the lifestyle and country I was in. I have always described my look as being on the more sophisticated and elegant side, so being as I am a huge fan of European style, Croatia was surely not one to leave out. Ready for the next adventure and newest fashion ahead, I cannot wait for where my next travels will take me. For more info on my trip, be sure to check out my own personal travel blog at www.somewheresoleil.com and like they say in Croatia, ‘Hvala’!

NewYork FashionWeek Recap 2014 By Soleil Roth

k

As September rolls around, the feeling of excitement and hype surrounding the start of a new season is undeniable. Minds fresh, bags packed, clothes lined up, calendars set- everyone is ready to start fresh and go out with a bang. Similar to your first day of school outfit sure to impress your class, the other side of the country is getting ready for its own unveiling to the world, i.e. Fashion Week. The bi-annual event for fashionistas and fashionistos alike, the iconic Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week occurs every September and February for designers to showcase the latest and greatest styles for spring and fall. People and press ogle and awe as the biggest brands and top designers set the standard for spring in the fashion industry’s most anticipated event. From lively accessories to monochromatic color schemes, there was nothing to miss as New York Fashion Week 2014 debuted. Looking forward to the season ahead, here’s a recap of spring’s biggest up and coming trends:

Pastels: Characteristic of the sweet, fresh spring air, gorgeous pastels like pale pink, sunshine yellow, powder blue, lavender and

orchid dawned the infamous week. As a grand opener, BCBGMaxAzria’s flowing and bohemian silhouettes included striking silk dresses with wraps and belts to give an ethereal and light look. In Tadashi Shoji’s show, silhouettes reflected the Venetian sunset among the Grand Canal in his cocktail dresses and skirts adorned with royal golds and blush roses mixed with lace and chains. Whether paired with heavy whites or tinted with metallic, pastels prove a popular trend for the upcoming spring. (Picture: BCBGMaxAzria)

Off the Shoulder: For a more feminine and sensual springtime touch, tops and dresses showcased one shoulder while

leaving the other bare, giving a small yet sophisticated touch to any look. This style adds a seductive yet playful touch without showing too much skin, as showcased in collections like Jill Stuart’s red romper or Versus’s black body con dress. (Jill Stuart)

Gingham: Without much background, gingham has taken full force as this spring’s chosen print. In contrast to the traditional

pastels and florals of spring, these bold black-and-white graphics make a statement. From the effortless gingham dresses and separates of Altuzarra to Diane von Furstenberg’s fusion of two different sized checks in a chiffon tan dress, this retro print is at its best when juxtaposed with simpler patterns, solid colors and sheers. (Picture: Oscar de la Renta)

Nature Nods: Keeping in touch with their roots (literally), designers were inspired by Mother Nature herself in the leafy

greens, bright flowers and delicate florals interspersed throughout many of their collections. Michael Kors dabbled outdoors as bright daffodils and wisterias debuted on his runway while Oscar de la Renta took a more feminine approach with extravagant printed gowns reflecting the flora and fauna of spring. (Picture: Michael Kors)

Sportswear: Now meant for walking the runway and walking the streets, chic, athletic sportswear has become a huge trend as

the functionality and fashion of athletic clothing appeals to many people. As new ideas of creativity emerge and a greater consumer demand for comfort, the combination of luxury and lifestyle resonate with women all around. Major brands like Under Armour, Athleta and Lululemon have paired with designers to co-create custom collections. During fashion week, designers Carmen Marc Valvo and Donna Karan take ready-to-wear to a greater and more relatable audience of women. (Picture: Marc Valvo)

Though the show has ended in New York, other shows are just beginning. As one week is not nearly enough for some of us, luckily you can keep up all month as fashion weeks continue in the other major fashion capitals of the world following New York Fashion Week with London Fashion Week (September 14-20th), Milan Fashion Week (September 22nd-27th) and Paris Fashion Week (September 29th-October 4th).

BCBG Max Azria’s Bohemian Maxis

As a college student, there are few things I love more than cheap food, new planners, and comfortable clothing. It’s a rare thing when all three of those come together as one, but I’ll always take what I can get. This year, at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, BCBG Max Azria shocked us all with (no, not free food and no free planners, but…) their beautiful bohemian, maxi, flowing and comfortable new spring pieces. To me, BCBG Max Azria has always been my go-to when I needed a party dress, or if I was feeling rather flashy. Now, they’ve proven that they’re more than just a bachelorette party dress store, and more of a sophisticated, everyday look store. They’ve enhanced their look with new fabrics and new silhouettes promised to flatter all body types. They’ve proven that comfortable is chic, and, truly, I can’t thank them enough for that. I’m especially excited about this show, not only because of the growth of BCBG, but because it means that for me, a budding college student, that I can roll out of bed, put on my chiffon maxi dress, and go to class. So long, trying to make my Lulu leggings work with my Nikes and leather jacket. I’m ready to rock the comfy maxi, thanks to BCBG Max Azria. I can’t wait to see what else they have in store!

The Floppy Hat By Kate Hagenston

When walking around a college campus in the fall, especially in Seattle, you see a lot of striking things. You see lots of rain boots, and hooded coats. You see new jeans, fresh white shoes, and a lot of scarves on students as the temperatures dip throughout the day. There’s no denying that you will see lots of hats on campus too, but until recently those hats were mostly in the form of a beanie or a UW snapback. Then, the floppy hate resurfaced and changed the game for us girls everywhere. Let’s talk about the beauty of a floppy hat. It’s way cute. It goes with almost every fall outfit you can think of. Quite frankly, it complements every fall outfit you can think of. It makes you feel anonymous and totally mysterious, which is a good think after a late night of studying, or “studying” in some people’s cases. Most importantly, it cuts your morning-gettingready-time almost in half because you don’t even have to wash your hair. I can hear college girls all over the country cheering now. If it covers up my hair, I’m so down. These hats have been gracing the scene for a few fall and winter seasons now, but just recently, I have seen girls everywhere take the jump and wear the hat. Now H&M, Nordstrom, Aritzia and Zara are all carrying them, and they are flying off the shelves. So, to make your fall quarter a little more fashionable, and a whole heck of a lot easier, buy the floppy hat. Buy it in two colors. You’ll thank me later.

As we all know, fall is quickly approaching. This means it’s time to bring out our jackets and boots and put away our favorite summer staple items… but not so fast! For those who are on a tight college budget, the more use you can get out of your clothes throughout the seasons, the better! I’ve created a list of five easy, fashion-forward looks that incorporate your favorite summer pieces into ensembles fit for the crisp fall air. 1) SUNDRESS: We all have that favorite sundress of ours that we absolutely do not want to part with just yet. To get more wear out of that cute floral dress, pair it with a leather jacket. The mixture of the soft prints in the dress and the rocker look of the jacket will make for the perfect going out look. 2) WHITE BAG: Just because the seasons are changing does not mean your handbag has to! A seamless look for bringing your favorite summer purse into fall is to balance it with solid, darker colored apparel. A look like this could include darker skinny jeans, flats, and a dark fitted blazer. 3) SHORTS: Don’t put your shorts away just yet! They can easily be integrated into your fall wardrobe. Throw on a pair of black tights underneath along with an oversized sweater and scarf and voila! You have an entirely new look without breaking your budget. 4) BRALETTE: An absolutely necessity this summer, bralettes were typically worn under a tank or even on their own with high waisted bottoms. In order to transition this summer trend into fall, try wearing it under a shear sweater. This look allows for a little peek-a-boo, yet it will keep you warm on those crisp autumn days. 5) BOYFRIEND JEAN: Most people think that this style of jean must go after summer passes, but that is not the case. Roll those pant legs down and pair with some cute booties or even simple flats for the perfect relaxed-yet-edgy fall look.

Falling for Flannels

How to Style Autumn’s Go-To Shirt By Olivia Tinsley

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of fall. Imagine leaves crunching under your feet while you’re walking to class, perhaps drinking a pumpkin spice latte. The only thing that would complete that ideal scene would be wearing a perfect plaid. It is, after all, the season of flannels, and I’m convinced that autumn wouldn’t truly be autumn without all of the warmth and coziness they bring. If you find yourself constantly reaching for your flannel this coming fall, as I’m sure I will be, consider a chic take on this season’s shirt.

Quick and to the point: In a rush? Throw a plaid shirt over a graphic tee and effortless boyfriend jeans to make a statement. Pointed flats add sophistication to counteract destroyed denim. Tough girl grunge: A denim vest and motorcycle inspired jeans pair perfectly to emphasize the grunge rock vibe of plaid. Princess of plaid: Dress up your favorite plaid shirt by tucking it in to a skater skirt. Add tights and a statement necklace for a glamorous finish. Mix master: Don’t be afraid to play with patterns. Wear a plaid shirt over a striped tee with jeans for an effortlessly stylish look. Top of the class: Wearing a collegiate-inspired cardigan over a plaid shirt and oxfords, you’ll ace any fashion class. Hippie-hipster: Pair a lace dress and a plaid shirt with a bohemian headpiece, remembering to have fun with fashion contradictions.

Sleepyhead Chic An Effortless Early Morning Lecture Look

Olivia Tinsley It’s 7:30 AM. After hitting snooze for the second time, the dreadful beeps of your alarm clock finally bully you out of your beloved bed. With a lecture to get to in 30 minutes, putting together an outfit is one of the last things on your priority list. Considering the hard work that coordinating a top, pants, shoes, and accessories entails, your favorite pair of yoga pants are beginning to look mighty tempting in comparison. Don’t give up the fashion fight just yet! Before you surrender, give this quick, easy, and comfy outfit solution a chance. Soon to be your new favorite, harem pants allows for all-day comfort and style. The fresh, slouchy silhouette is an excellent legging alternative. Choose black for a streamlined look or a punchy pattern for a burst of energy. For your top, a cropped sweater is always a win. Offering the warmth and coziness of a sweatshirt, a cropped sweater paired with a high waisted harem pant frames the waist for a feminine shape. To finish your look, harem pants, or as I like to call them, ‘dressy sweats,’ can be paired with everything from booties to Converse. The next time you’re short on time and fashion inspiration, give this effortless ensemble a try!

Fall Trends from Vogue

By Nina Chalard Many of the trends mentioned are self explanatory, but there are a few that should be elaborated on. The flirty dress was noted as a feminine dress with bright colors and an “A line. Ornamentation was classified as choosing statement pieces such as a necklace or cuff to dress up an outfit. It was discussed however that too many accessories could make an outfit look too overdone. Always put on your accessories and then take one piece off. When asked what her favorite trend of the season was Cara replied with

60s inspired. Although difficult to pull off in daily life, Cara gave some great advice and said to just go for it and really own your look. Lawrence gave similar advice and added that finding clothing that fits your body aligned with the trends is the best way to go. Both Cara and Lawrence emphasized to take the runway trends and make it your own to fit your everyday routine. Confidence is one of the best things you can wear.

This year the Bellevue Collection put on a dazzling media luncheon showcasing fall trends in honor of Bellevue fashion week. The hosts for the lunch were Vogue Market Stylist Cara Crowley and Celebrity Stylist Lawrence Zarian. As Cara and Lawrence announced each of the fall trends models walked the runway showcasing each style. The trends announced were:

1. Winter whites 2. Knits 3. Sixties inspired 4. The flirty dress 5. Zippers 6. Textured clothing 7. Braids 8. The colorful eye 9. Ornamentation 10. Boots: ankle and knee high 11. Gloves 12. Wide belts

Top of the Class Photos by

Katy Lee This year, it’s about showing up and standing out. This is first row fashion for those not afraid to make their presence known. It’s time to celebrate the ones who do, the ones who dare, the ones who dress to inspire.
